THE FOREST IS A STAGE

Since the city center has become rather busy, one of the goals of Amsterdam is to show tourists that it has so much more to offer then the ‘usual suspects’ concentrated around the canals. So, grab your bike or take a tram/bus to the Amsterdamse Bos Theater. Within an hour you will find yourself in the middle of a beautiful forest

to enjoy – subtitled! - performances, live music and concerts. This season stars like Nena Cherry, Pete Doherty and “crying” Don McClean will climb the stage. Check the website for performers and tickets. If the weather takes its toll: you will receive an email allowing to make a reservation for another evening.

‘Fantastic fietsen’

AMSTERDAM JULYAUGUST 2019

The saying goes that the Dutch are born with wooden shoes on their feet, an Edammer cheese in their mouth, and a bike in their hands. Well, this much is true: our prime minister often bikes to his work and we think that says something. During this summer you can design your own bike and create your own biking gadget. This workshop is accompanied by three installations created by Dutch artist Charlotte van Otterloo and a photo exhibition showing the past, present and future of Amsterdam as one of the most beloved cities to discover on bike.

Ice cream, you scream!

In the oldest street of Amsterdam (Warmoesstraat) you can find one of the finest ice and chocolate makers. Here the ‘catch of the day’ decides from what flavors we can choose, as all ice creams are made fresh every day. Owner Kees Raat was educated at some of the best pastry shops in town before opening this small but tasteful place. For 10 years now he produces the tastiest, freshest Italian ice cream and delicious "bean-to-bar" chocolate from beans from Venezuela. Really worth a visit!

Une Parisienne à Amsterdam Interesting roles keep coming up for Isabella Huppert (Paris, 1953), considered as one of the most important actors of her generation. Recently bestowed with a second César - the French equivalent for the Oscar - for her outstanding role in Elle (directed by the Dutchman Paul Verhoeven). And this summer she comes to Amsterdam. First on screen in film museum Eye where she is ‘hommaged’ in no less than 30 movies. And in September she will perform live in Mary Said What She Said (written by Darryl Pinckney, directed by American

Robert Wilson) about the ill-fated Queen of Scots. For all the stage lovers of - subtitled French drama and passion!

It started as an alternative, tongue in cheek festival for a very small (in)crowd in the eighties. Gradually it was discovered by everyone with a big appetite for - subversive - humor presented in the most hilarious way by upcoming and established artists. What visitors foremost like is the melancholy, vintage circus-like setting completed with pop up restaurants and bars. If this appeals to you, make sure you take enough time to spend here. You actually don’t have to speak Dutch fluently to get the git out of this humoristic and burlesque gathering.

With a little help from de Bijenkorf

Rijksmuseum escape game

Bored of your wardrobe? Or cannot find time nor inspiration for a restyle? Than a visit to Marjo Kranenborg, one of the personal shoppers in de Bijenkorf might be just the thing for you… - In a nutshell: what do you do at de Bijenkorf? I help people with their outfits. I select clothes, make combinations and help them with trying new silhouettes, styles and colors. - Why would someone need your help? Some people don’t have time to shop, or are looking for advice when they need something special. But also when you need fresh inspiration, a second opinion from a professional can be so helpful. And obviously: I know all the collections in de Bijenkorf by heart. - Do you have a certain style? The personality from my client is my starting point. Before we meet, I ask for their current or aspiring brands, silhouettes, colors and what they are looking for. I also ask for their budget, so I can make a specific selection before someone arrives. I focus on items not on brands. So in my outfits a Vanilia skirt can easily be worn with a Dries van Noten top. As long as it makes my customer more beautiful. - Does it cost? No, it’s free of charge. We trust on the intention to purchase during the personal and dedicated appointment. It is one of the many services de Bijenkorf offers their guests.

This summer a mysterious quest is asking to be unravelled in an unusual place: the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Sherlocked, the creators of the award-winning escape game ‘The Vault’ in the Beurs van Berlage, designed an exclusive adventure within the stunning building. Will you be able to uncover the mystery and find what’s hidden in the shadow of Rembrandt? What is hiding in plain sight, if you would just know where to look?

Up close and personal with Van Gogh Many people living in or coming to Amsterdam are familiar with the incredible life and work of Van Gogh. Of course the Van Gogh Museum, but also the Rijksmuseum have his work on display and are famous for it. Perhaps due to the location, but two places that are still to be discovered by the grand public are the Kröller-Müller Museum and the Vincentre. With 90 paintings and 180 drawings, the famous Kröller-Müller Museum presents the second largest Van Gogh collection worldwide and should be high on every Van Gogh fan bucket list. World-famous artists such as Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso are also on display here. And then there is also one of Europe’s largest sculpture garden in the backyard of the museum. In the Vincentre in the city of Neunen, you can follow Van Gogh’s journey and see where he actually lived and found inspiration for many of his paintings.

Blue Boat

Book your boat and prepare your picknick basket in advance, because the only perfect way to enjoy the worldwide famous Prinsengracht Concert is by floating gently on the canal. The best part of it all: you can watch international acclaimed singers for free. And join them while they - at the end of the concert perform traditionally Amsterdam’s anthem “Aan de Amsterdamse Grachten”. No doubt you will start humming yourself after two refrains.

Amongst the many boats that cruise the Amsterdam canals, Blue Boat offers a very special program: the Blue Boat Kids Cruise. This interactive audio tour comes with an activity booklet and a pair of pirate-binoculars, included with every children’s ticket. On board they will meet Johnny the Mouse, a pirate that isn’t scarred of anything. His friend Harold the Cat is a different story though… He wants to be a pirate too, but he is afraid of water! Johnny wants to help his friend to get over his fear, but doing so he could need a little help. Perhaps your kids can help him…

Photographer Julius Rooymans and fashion designer Hans Ubbink (RooymansUbbink) joined forces to recreate Rembrandt's Night Watch in a photographic way. A resemblance so striking, that for a moment you believe that you are standing face to face with the shooters in the painting. RooymansUbbink have restored the Night Watch to its glory by completing the work in the original composition, including the parts that were so brutally cut off in 1715. The result is overwhelming: a 4.2 by 5.3 meter image. When you walk around the painting, RooymansUbbink will surprise you with another enormous work: the counter perspective. We see the shooters on the back, and sneaking through all these figures we even see the master himself, working behind his easel. RooymansUbbink also made 48 portraits and scenes that Rembrandt forgot to paint. The result is a unique modern 17th century portrait gallery that can also be viewed at the Dutch Design Gallery. Here you can witness scenes that shed light on the life of Rembrandt and life in the heyday of Dutch history, the golden age.

Restoring Rembrandt's Masterpiece The Night Watch is one of Rembrandt's most celebrated artworks. This masterpiece dating back to 1642 is now up for restoration. The Rijksmuseum is organising this act in a very candid manner. As part of the festive 2019 Year of Rembrandt, the museum allows the public to witness the entire process. Ensuring that visitors can see all the

action, Rembrandt's famous painting will be encased in a glass chamber. Before the actual restoration takes place, the audience can see the detailed study and technical examination of The Night Watch. Viewers are also able to follow the entire process online through a digital platform.

The Ultimate Rembrandt Collection The celebration of the 2019 Year of Rembrandt continues with an exhibition of all of his paintings at RAI Amsterdam. Discover Rembrandt displays some 350 high-quality reproductions of the master. They are showcased in their original size and in chronological order. The selection varies from museum collections to privately-owned pieces, even including stolen and damaged paintings. The highlight of the exhibition is The Night Watch, which reproduction includes the part that was cut off in 1715 to fit the new Amsterdam city hall.

What did love mean to Rembrandt? Designer Outlet Roermond is located in the historic city centre of Roermond, in the south of the Netherlands. It is home to designer brands, the latest trends, and a range of dining options. They are also currently housing an original artwork by Rembrandt. But that is about to change. Designer Outlet Roermond is giving away their signed and dated etching by a competition. Self Portrait with Saskia (second state of three) is a self-portrait of Rembrandt with his wife in the background. Rembrandt portrays himself looking at the viewer. He appears to be drawing on a sheet of paper before him. Behind the artist is Rembrandt's first wife Saskia van Uylenburgh (1612–1642), whom he married just two years earlier. The two remained together for thirteen years until Saskia’s death at the young age of 30. Although Rembrandt has often depicted Saskia, this is the only self-portrait in his graphic oeuvre also showing his wife. You can win this unique artwork by answering a simple question: What does love mean to you?

personal life and experiences, mixing them with elements of street photography, pop culture, and film. Silver Lake Drive consists of colorful enigma's on photo and film. Prager uses stylistic elements of old film genres such as film noir, thriller, and crime fiction. Women play a significant role in her work, often serving as an emotionally driven protagonist. Although the artist creates a world filled with saturated colors, she doesn't shy away from exploring dark topics.

“I don’t have to convince the world anymore” Erwin Olaf @ the Rijks

In The Hague he just closed ‘the most visited photo exhibition ever’ in The Netherlands, and on his 60th birthday – July 2 – he opens a prestigious expo at the Rijksmuseum. After years of working his head off, Erwin Olaf can finally take some rest. Approaching his 60th birthday, Erwin Olaf is sitting at the kitchen table in his Amsterdam studio. It’s just the morning after his appearance on a popular talk show on the national TV. In The Hague two museums (Museum of Photography and the Gemeentemuseum) just closed a major retrospection in honor of the international well-known photographer. Drawing 330.000 visitors it was the best photographers exhibition in The Netherlands ever. And that’s just the beginning for Olaf. On his birthday, July 2, Amsterdam Rijksmuseum will open the exhibition “12x Erwin Olaf”, in which Olaf’s images are placed in dialogue with Dutch painters of the Golden Age. He is tremendously successful and in the picture. How does it feel to be a star photographer? “Overwhelming”, he says. “It’s like finding your presents under the Christmas tree. There is that big package in which the exhibition in

The Hague is wrapped and there is that other tiny box. In it I find a diamond ring: that’s the Rijksmuseum.” Erwin Olaf started his career as photojournalist in 1980 documenting the nightlife of Amsterdam. His trademark is to address the raw fringes of society, to look for abnormalities hidden in the ordinary. In his early work - influenced by Robert Mapplethorpe and Joel-Peter Witkin - he boldly approaches social issues and sexuality, breaking taboos, daring and provocative. Commercially he breaks through by photographing fashion and advertising campaigns for international brands as Nokia, Microsoft end Levi’s. His represents a strong sense of aesthetics and orchestration, mixing realism and imagination. His work has been exhibited in major institutions worldwide and he won numerous international and media prizes. In the Netherlands he’s also known as HELLOAMS.COM

the court photographer of the Dutch royal family whom he portrayed in an informal and unusual honest style. Last year the Rijksmuseum received almost 500 objects from Olaf’s core collection. The exhibition “12x Erwin Olaf” is being held to mark this transfer. Olaf: “It’s a tremendous honor. And also a little scary, my images alongside Rembrandt… isn’t that haughty?” Olaf maintains a special relationship with the museum, “a friendship” he calls it. “I was a 12 year old boy when on a school trip when I first visited the “Rijks”. We walked to the Nightwatch, but instead my eyes were drawn to a self-portrait of Rembrandt as a young man. It was like I was struck by lightning. It was so beautiful. Especially the shadow in the portrait and the way Rembrandt imposes himself boldly in the frame, fascinated me. And they still do. I still try to work with shadows in my photography as Rembrandt did.” At the exhibition Olaf resembles the portrait of a boy with a hat with this Rembrandt portrait. “He has the same innocent open and fresh look towards the world as the young Rembrandt has: world, here I come.’ The 11 images and 1 video selected for this exhibition, already existed. Much of Olafs work is inspired and influenced by the painting masters of the Golden Age. The boy with the hat for instance comes from Olafs series ‘ladies hats’ (1985-1994). ‘I noticed that all those men in paintings of the Golden Age were wearing hats like ladies nowadays. So I found the faces with 42

Erwin Olaf | Squares | La Penseuse | 1987 it, bony, marked faces referring to the rustic characters in the paintings of Frans Hals, Jan Steen, Johannes Vermeer. They are people from the street, old men, fuller women. Photogenic.’

NUDE WOMEN Olaf always photographed the nude. In his early work his images of old naked people, men with erections, extreme fat naked women, often in bondage clothing, shocked the world. ‘La Penseuse’, one of the naked women that he made in 1987 is now coupled with Rembrandts ‘Nude Woman’. ‘In the past I photographed the nude rather aggressively,’ he admits. ‘Nowadays I approach the human body in a more muffled way. I am looking for the stillness and the reduction of emotions. Like the Portrait of a Girl dressed in Blue by Johannes Verspronck. Only this girl has a feather in her hands. It is the texture of the dress, the look in her eyes and the casual position of the hands, there is an emotion in it. I

coupled it with Hope-Portrait 5, a girl in a yellow dress and look how she places her hands. I once saw the painting ‘Fatherly Admonition’ by Gerard ter Borgh. You only see a woman on her back, her neck is bowed. And in a split second you know: this girl is guilty. It inspired me to the series ‘Keyhole’. “Why I am so successful? Honestly I don’t know. I am a street fighter and I was lucky, I guess. Since 2002/2003 I really started to receive acknowledgment. Maybe because I stopped shouting and trying to proof myself at that time. I realized that I didn’t have to convince the world anymore. Instead a deepening in my personal work appeared. Like in my own personal life. That way my images of realism and imagination are always reflecting my inner self. I make who I am. However, I’m still in search of what “being me” exactly means in my images. And I guess that search will never stop.”

Olaf loves Amsterdam, he says. Living on one side of the city (Jordaan) and working on the other side (Rivierenbuurt) he crosses it every day by bike. “And I always try to take a different route letting centuries of beauty pass by. From the Golden Age to the beginning of the 20th century with its architecture of the Amsterdam School.”

Favorite spots 1. Morgan & Mees Restaurant (Tweede Hugo de Grootstraat 2-6, corner Nassaukade) “I love sitting on the terrace, watching people come by. Just the right spot for it. They serve great white wine. And you can cross the street to Café Same Place, the sex club and most exciting place of Amsterdam.”

2. Museum Het Schip (The Ship) at the Spaarndammerbuurt “My mother was from the Spaarndammerbuurt, so that’s a connection. I’m always drawn to this beautiful house block built in the early 20th in the Amsterdam School style. It’s so Dutch with the bricks and the roof tiles. And it’s an important exponent of social housing, which we shouldn’t lose sight on in this city.”

4. ArtZuid: yearly sculpture route in Amsterdam Old South (till 15/9) “Every year the collection of sculptures is so well put together. I enjoy the unpredictability and the energy of the exposed work. I’m always touched by it and it’s a great walk alongside the houses from the 30th of last century.”

1

5. The gardens of the Rijksmuseum “In the front and in the back. Tourists are playing checkers there nowadays. It’s an oases of tranquility in the middle of town. I love it.”

3

3. Sculpture “Onbevangenheid”, Brug 420 “Near the Apollohal you find a beautiful sculpture by Amsterdam’s ‘city sculptor’ Hildebrand Lucien Krop (1884-1970). It’s a little girl that carries a horse. Its abstract and somehow there is a threat in it, a small fringe.”

GINA FROM PERU BRINGS HER FAMILY RECIPES El Pibe Westerstraat 86 elpibe-amsterdam.nl

El Pibe Bar & Cocina

A little Latin Sanctuary in the Jordaan

L

ocated in the much cherished Jordaan area with its narrow streets and small canals, El Pibe bar & cocina will take you on a culinary journey through the urban culture, pride and heritage of Buenos Aires and the creativity and playfulness of Lima. “At El Pibe all different Latin American stories and influences come together on a table” says co-owner Vincent Uzcudun, “we bring the flavors and cultures of South America to Amsterdam”. Brothers Vincent and Thomas, originating from Argentina, love to spread the word about the culinary world of migration. “Since centuries many cultures have brought different ingredients

and cooking methods to South America. From our grandparents we have taken these stories and recipes into our food. At El Pibe you can go from playful bites to the best Argentinean Black Label beef. Thanks to our passionate grandfather we continue the important art of Argentina barbecue, the ‘asado’. Our grandmother taught us the techniques for the finest empanadas and medialunas with surprising choices of fillings. Our chef Gina from Peru brings her family recipes such as her ceviche’s, like the classico and unforgettable Nikkei ceviche with tuna and refreshing watermelon base, originating from the Japanese migrants. We also serve a vegan variation with Portobello.”

LA FAMILIA In a warm and inviting interior on the lively Westerstraat, the custom-made cocktail menu and carefully selected Argentinian wines are perfect for sharing Latin streetfood in the heat of Amsterdam summer. Next to dinner you can enjoy a brunch or lunch on Saturday or Sunday from 11 am. If you are not near the Jordaan area, it is still easy to join ‘la familia’ as El Pibe means ‘little kid’ and is a great addition to big brother Salmuera on the Rozengracht or big sister Roses by Sal on the Reguliersdwarsstraat. Every location has its own vibe but always with Latin passion in food, drinks and atmosphere.

R

ight in the heart of the city at the vibrant Leidseplein, Fenicie Cuisine Libanaise has opened its doors for an amazing culinary trip through Lebanon. A great place if you want to try the refined and elegant cuisine of the middle east. “With our passion and experience we have created a wonderful place to taste the abundance of our history”, says Chef de Cuisine, Coen van Tienhoven. Next to his first location in Purmerend, a small city north of Amsterdam, he and his team are delighted to open Fenicie Cuisine Libanaise in such a lively part of the city. Here you can enjoy the beauty and quality of our food and the hospitality of our Lebanese roots. To cook and eat with family and friends, and sharing dishes is the heart of our culture.”

46

The Lebanese kitchen is well known for its healthy and refined food, and therefore also a joy for vegetarians. Next to fish and meat, like poultry and lamb, the charcoal grill is key to prepare all sorts of vegetables. The rich history and fruitful grounds of Lebanon bring a large variation of ingredients, herbs and spices to enhance the dishes.

MAZZA “A great way to discover the culinary secrets of the middle east is our ‘Mazza’ concept”, explains Van Tienhoven. Lebanese bread.” To discover the best from the chef you can choose for a shared dining experience from beginning to end with matching drinks like Lebanese wines, cocktails and mocktails. With the “You cannot think, love, work or sleep without a good meal” statement, Fenicie is a great spot for lunch or dinner to taste and smell the beautiful delicacies in a warm and inviting environment. Pacific

Straightforward classics

O

n the edge of city center West, Pacific welcomes you to the lush and green Westerpark, from early breakfast till late night partying. With a large all-day sun terrace, a fun industrial interior and its famous charcoal barbecue, Pacific has it all.

Surrounded by creative hubs this location was once part of the city’s extensive gasworks, which gives it an interesting raw edge. The spacious surroundings are also perfect for relaxing, meeting up with friends and family or just enjoy some fresh air. Here chef Milas van der Plaats and his team hold an interesting CV of creating Amsterdam hotspots and they are amongst the new culinary guard of honest and sustainable cooking, using the best ingredients for straightforward classics or fun dishes. Van der Plaats: “We have a passion for seasonal products and simple ingredients. Using the grill we change anything into inspiring creations full of flavor.” The charcoal grill is the Master of this location and next to classic meat and fish preparations, the chef has the reputation

to turn simple vegetables into tasteful creations. Sustainability goes even further here by working with a system where fruit and vegetables that supermarkets would throw away, are used. “They are still fresh, so we see no reason not to eat them…”, Van der Plaats mentions. “We use them for soups, vegan and vegetarian dishes or as a side dish to your grilled steak or fish.” The new Amsterdam chefs are less competitive and great in networking and finding ways to exchange ingredients. If one chef - for example - will not use a certain cut of meat, he is happy to swap with colleagues. This requires instant creativity and learning on the job.

Next to relaxing moments on the terrace, a quiet breakfast, lunch, afternoon drinks and bites or casual dining, this bar is great for spontaneous gettogethers as well as larger planned group dinners & celebrations. But what makes Pacific famous are their Friday and Saturday free after-dinnerdance nights. Thanks to the park location you can dance till the late hours where the DJ’s pinpoint the atmosphere of the night, from disco to funk, and from soul to house.

HERE FAMILY BUSINESSES GUARANTEE QUALITY, SERVICE AND HOSPITALITY

Street with character The Utrechtsestraat and its surrounding area is one of the most popular residential areas in Amsterdam. The special thing about it is - next to its central location in the middle of the Grachtengordel - that almost all stores are specialists. Instead of big shopping chains that dominate so many streets these days, here family businesses guarantee quality, service and hospitality. Also international brands found their way to this lovely street. Small in design and with an exclusive look, they only show the best products from their most luxurious collections. The street is also popular among the people of Amsterdam who go here for their daily groceries at the quality butcher or the cheese farmer, who also happens to sell delicious sandwiches. There even is a hardware store, that fixes odd jobs at home. Besides shopping you can go out here any way you fancy. Luxury restaurants to village cafÊs where residents read a newspaper in the morning and sip a glass of white wine on the terrace at the end of the afternoon: it’s all there. So, if you are looking for a nice gift, a good bottle of wine, a new outfit, furniture, delicacies or daily groceries? Or do you want to be pampered in a luxury restaurant or enjoy a cozy cafe? It all comes together in Utrechtsestraat and the surrounding area.

SMAAK SELLS QUALITY BAGS FOR A FRIENDLY PRICE

Smaak Amsterdam What would you do when you can’t find the right bag for a good price? You could try to design and produce one yourself… But, that’s easier said than done, you might think. And perhaps in your case it is, but not for multi-brand store owner André Grundmann. When he struggled to find a quality bag with a friendly price, he did start producing bags that design-wise can compete with the major fashion brands and were affordable anyway. A few years and a few hard knocks later, Grundmann got his collection of the ground. Smaak Amsterdam offers modern classics that are feminine and chic and loved by independent women who know exactly what they want.

MADE IN AMSTERDAM PROUD TO PRESENT

People tend to believe that ‘everything is better at a distance’. But here we show you the opposite: three Amsterdam based brands with local production and an international feel.

Joe Merino Some brands design four collections a year, dump everything in a sale, throw away what’s left and start the whole process again. Not Joe Merino. This brand, founded by Amsterdammer Ron Beckers, has successfully produced and sold the same sweater for over 7 years.

How did you come up with the concept for Joe Merino? After working in many segments of retail and fashion I realized that there are so many people involved in creating just one piece of clothing. The distance between a brand and the producer of the material, for example, is massive. So I was interested in trying to reduce that distance. Secondly, I did not want to participate in the disrupting and polluting tradition of fast fashion. So I came up with the first concept of Joe: one sweater for men, made with high-quality wool from sheep that have been treated well. Over the years this grew to 15 styles in many colors. It sounds easier to do, creating one high-quality product instead of many… *Laughs* It is definitely not easier! We guarantee that if you order the same sweater you’ve bought six years ago, you’ll receive exactly the same sweater that fits and feels just like the one you had. This means that, even though the wool comes from different sheep, is spun on a different machine and is put together by another worker, the quality needs to be exactly the same. How do you do that? We work close with the production line, as we like to know everyone involved. We’re working f.i. on an experiment to create a sweater completely produced in the Netherlands, using Dutch wool from a farm in Baambrugge. It’s a challenge to find Dutch spinning- and knitting factories, and commercially it’s not very attractive. But when we believe in something, we make it happen. What role plays the environment for Joe Merino? We keep the environment in mind with everything we do: from the choice of treatment to the way we ship our products. We don’t need to treat our wool with chemicals because of its high quality, and we work together with factories that pay fair wages. We continuously improve our treatment methods of the wool and we make sure everything is packed in light materials that use little ink. And we’ve created Joe Circular, a sweater made of recycled materials.

MADE IN AMSTERDAM Proud to present

The Jean Maker For Jason Denham it was always clear he would do something with denim. Perhaps it was his destiny, hidden in his name. But to make a brand as big as Denham – with 65 stores worldwide and more to open – one needs more than a promising title. Let’s see what drives him. So we speak English? Yes, I’m an Englishman in Amsterdam. For 20 years now. I came with a job for Pepe Jeans. Ah, you came with the jeans. The love goes way back… I fell in love with denim when I while studying Fashion Design at the University of Manchester. Brands like Diesel and G-Star were just transforming jeans from their worker wear status into fashion. I found it most fascinating, this evolution around denim. What is so special about denim? Do you have a minute? For instance its endless possibilities. You can do so many things to it: coloring, aging, shaping. All with different effects. Also it’s one of the most sustainable materials, due to its organic threads and the quality that is gets better with aging… Jeans really take over your shape while wearing them. How did you start your own brand? When Pepe left Amsterdam I decided to stay. I came across Evisu that was quite big here at the time and exactly what I wanted: luxurious and tailor made jeans. I founded Blue Blood with a

partner. And although this was a great experience, I always had a dream to create a label using my own family name. So in 2008 you started Denham. What is different/ special about your brand? It is rooted in the obsession for premium quality that balances innovation with a respect for tradition and attention to detail. We are located in the two strongest denim markets in the world: Tokyo and Amsterdam. We only use top quality materials and guarantee perfect fits. Also we do believe in retail. We like to engage with customers, give them a service they cannot get online. Even after sales… So it was a good decision to stay in Amsterdam when Pepe left? Understatement! Although my expectations were very low when I moved here. Amsterdam is a small city, but it has everything I need. It’s cultural, artistic and the food and the service really evolved the last decades. Amsterdam is talked about and can measure itself with Paris and London.

“RAIN COUTURE IS BORN OUT OF THE NECESSITY OF A GOOD COAT IN VARYING WEATHER CONDITIONS, AND A TYPICAL AMSTERDAM ENTREPRENEURIAL MENTALITY” rain-couture.nl

Rain Couture When staying in Amsterdam, you’re almost guaranteed some rainy days. Thankfully, you don’t need to hide your beautiful outfit under shapeless plastic ponchos anymore: Daphne Gerritse from Rain Couture knows how to make you look great while staying warm and dry. How did you come up with the idea for Rain Couture? After studying Business and doing part of my Masters in Marketing in one of the rainiest cities in Europe (Bergen, Norway) I landed my first job in Amsterdam. While cycling to work through all kinds of weather, I realized that there wasn’t really a coat available that allowed for the unpredictable weather conditions in The Netherlands. That’s when I decided to create a product that would combine an outdoor jacket with fashionable design. A warm, breathing raincoat that looks and feels like a high-quality fashion piece.

What makes your brand unique? We make timeless pieces. We made the conscious choice not to participate in fast fashion: we produce according to what we sell and believe in quality over quantity. We offer a variety of styles: from high fashion to casual, from cooler coats for summer to warmer ones for winter. We developed our own waterproofing method: placing the coating underneath the fabric as well as on top. This allows us to use different kinds of fabrics and create a coat that can be cleaned without compromising its waterproofness.

Starting a label with a background in business and marketing… How did that work? I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mentality. As a kid, I was always busy drawing and crafting the things I wanted to have. So when I had this idea - that I was very passionate about – I translated it into determination to make it happen. I taught myself everything about materials, suppliers, production facilities… It has been a long process, but I’m proud of the product we now have to offer.

What will be your focus for the future? We’re working on creating everything you might need to be able to live with the rainy weather: laptop sleeves, pants, shawls… And we pay continuous attention to our sustainability. We’re currently researching the possibilities of recycled materials. So keep an eye out for future announcements, and we’d love to welcome you in our stores!

Ron Gastrobar Ron Gastrobar in ‘Zuid’ is the only one out of four Ron Gastrobars that has been awarded with a Michelin star (since 2013). Although Ron’s proud of the star, he does things slightly different from other Michelin star restaurants. For example, each dish is prepared in no more than 5 steps, which makes the dishes creatively challenging. Ron’s signature dish “Ron’s Boneless Spareribs” is one of the favourites. Another important part of the Gastrobar concept are the €17.50 dishes. Perfect for sharing! As Ron says it himself: “Ron Gastrobar is an accessible restaurant where enjoyment is paramount but without comprimising on service and quality”. If that ain’t enough, the spectacular floral terrace garden is always open on warm and sunny days!

W

hen did you decide to become a jewel designer? When I graduated from the Amsterdam Fashion Institute. I decided to work for my parents, but only with my own collection. That's when Choices by DL was born. I wanted to do something with colored stones. And, moreover, stones that you can adapt to the clothes that you wear. Let’s say I created a kind of textile, but then in jewelry. That is why Choices by DL is called a Jewellery wardrobe in a box.

Describe your collection in a few words.. 18 carat gold, interchangeable gems, and a globally patented system.

What do you like most about your profession? That I am always engaged with people who celebrate their beautiful moments in life.

What is your favorite design? The classic 12/12 ring for your little finger. You can have your children's initials engraved in it.

How do your jewels relate to other collections presented by GASSAN? Choices by DL is one of the top-10 bestselling jewels in our shop, although it is always difficult to compete with the diamond, because they are much higher priced. But recently we added a new collection to Choices by DL containing also diamonds - since then we sold even better.

Do you have an etiquette concerning jewels? I like to adjust my jewels to the clothes I’m wearing. I really enjoy mixing and matching, so for me yellow, white and rosé gold can easily be mingled. Who wears – in your opinion - jewels as they should be worn: with an elegant attitude? Queen Máxima! She is such a source of inspiration for me. I developed my latest collection of Choices by DL entirely with her in my mind.

Italian brand established in 2005 and your address if you fancy a more unique look. Fashion designer Alessia Santi affirms a sense of style charged by contaminations and interactions, breathing life into enlivening creations. As down to earth as the colors are, the more deconstructed the shapes. Think tie-dyeing and re-dyeing fabrics, braiding them together, knotting and mixing them. The result is a contemporary wardrobe including apparently simple informal garments, that go hand in hand with elaborate detailing and haute couture undertones. Hand-crafted finishing, unpredictable cuts and fluid forms contribute to spontaneous-looking clothes, where prints express a timeless society and knits evolve through mixing unlikely colors and materials.

On walking distance from the Museum Square and the Vondelpark you find the tree-lined Cornelis Schuytstraat: one of the most famous streets of Amsterdam. It is situated in the old south area of the city where from the beginning of the 20th century the well-to-do use to live. Between spacious houses, you’ll find old monumental villas, mansions and big penthouses. Since in the last years the Dutch famous and rich settled in, real-estate prices went through the roof. So shopping in ‘The Schuyt’ is like in

an elegant and mundane little corner of Paris, however still in the cozy and relaxed way that is so typical for the Dutch. Alongside exclusive fashion-designer shops, beauty-stores and fine pastry shops, you’ll find the butcher, the greengrocer and the cheese monger, but just a bit more luxurious than elsewhere. If not shopping you can enjoy great food in fancy restaurants or have a cappuccino on one the terraces while watching the rich and famous doing their daily groceries.

The ultimate luxury ladies fashion destination with high-end brands like Balmain, Elisabetta Franchi and Off-White mixed and matched with funky Dutch brands like LA Sisters, Freebird and many other fashion gems that you cannot find anywhere else. The stylists are “smartphone free” and will do their utmost to give you a real personal shopping advice. You can also have a look at their webshop: your delivery will arrive at your hotel the same day. AMSTERDAM FASHION WEEK 2019 STRUT YOUR STUFF For the fashionistas out there Amsterdam Fashion Week (AFW) is just around the corner, 5-9 September, to be exact. Held twice a year, it’s a celebration of Dutch fashion through runway shows, presentations and events. Danie Bles, renowned stylist to the stars took ownership of the project in 2018, explains what AFW what to expect this season…

Danie Bles Was born in 1977 and spent 20 years as a stylist, working with the stars. She regularly appears on Shownieuws, as a fashion consultant and in 2012 was awarded Sky Radio’s ‘Power woman’ award for best business woman. Danie is married and has two sons. 82

What inspired you to take AFW under your wing? For me, 2018 was the right time to make AFW my event. There was so much interest and new talent in the fashion world and I wanted to explore that. I believe that the combination between haute couture and high street is vital - both parties need each other. I am also heavily into the ‘see now, buy now’ concept that lends itself to the age of Instagram and social media. People want to be able to find that outfit and now. What was your vision for the event? The first event was purely Amsterdam Fashion Week - but by bringing that to the

Museumplein, we were already changing the look and feel. The second show Amsterdam Fashion Week Studio combined art and fashion. The next show will bring us back to Amsterdam Fashion Week and will be held across the city in a number of locations. What do you think of Amsterdam as a fashion capital? I never compare Amsterdam to the likes of Milan, Paris or London. We are Amsterdam and I believe we should stay true to ourselves. Working with designers based here, or in Belgium, is important. Our job is to show the world the best we have and by

“OUTSIDE THE CATWALKS WE HOLD WORKSHOPS, FASHION INSTALLATIONS, TALKS AND PODCASTS AROUND THE CITY” holding AFW we can successfully launch new talent. Amsterdam has grown so much over the past 10 years. We have seen the city develop rapidly.... especially within the hotel and restaurant scene. When it comes to shopping there is still room for improvement. We could do with more mono-brand stores as well as larger department stores. For those wanting to get involved in AFW and its activities - what can they expect? The catwalk shows are not open to the public. However, outside of this we hold workshops, fashion installations, talks and podcasts around the city. Last year Duran Lantink also held an exhibition outside

the main venue. In my opinion he’s one of the biggest names to emerge in the Dutch fashion industry - he’s going to be huge. Participating shops will host events, including cocktail parties, or trunk shows. To know exactly what’s going on and for ticket sales, you can visit our website amsterdamfashionweek.nl. You’ll also be able to purchase exclusive AFW merchandise - we’re working in collaboration with designers on this one. Which designers will we see on the runway this September? Ronald van der Kemp and a mix of up and coming Dutch and Belgium talent. Plus, last

year’s ‘Lichting’ winner Ferry Schiffelers, (Lichting being one central catwalk show for the best academy graduates, presented to key industry influencers), will present his own full show - which is really exciting. What does the future hold for Danie? The big dream is to become the number one 360 fashion marketing and events office. I really believe in storytelling and if a brand wants that story to be heard, they should come to us. And in the short term - I would love to see AFW in Dam Square!

BURGER BARS BEST OF AMSTERDAM

Burger bars are popular in Amsterdam, serving a wide variety of choices. Vega burgers, fish burgers, bao burgers: they are all on the menu. But when you fancy a classic mouthwatering beef burger, grab a bite at one of these places…

Burger du Moment The sheer number of burgers on the menu plus the ever-changing ‘burger du moment’, where the chefs unleash their creativity weekly to create a new flavour combo, crowns Amsterdam’s own Cannibale Royale as burger royalty. Between your bun could be anything from ‘Le Waldorf’ to ‘Le Chicken et Waffle’ to the iconic Cannibale ‘Classique’ - their twist on the bacon and cheese classic. Serving up seriously good burgers, meat from the fire, cocktails and craft beers in a buzzing atmosphere, Cannibale Royale is more than food, it’s an experience… Even for vegetarians! They’ve just launched arguably the best plant-based burger in town. Try it yourself at one of their 5 Amsterdam locations. Open daily from lunch until late into the night.

Cedars

At the waterside of the Westlandgracht, is a modern glass building which houses the chic restaurant Cedars. Here you can enjoy authentic Lebanese cooking on two terraces while sharing food with friends, family and loved ones. The food is inspired by traditional Lebanese cuisine: great taste and a feast for the eyes. Think of a table full of mezze (small dishes) but also of main dishes such as rack of lamb and marinated sea bass from the charcoal grill.

WEST

Rotisserie West Boutique Known for its juicy spit-roasted chicken, double patty burgers and “turbo cheese fries”, Rotisserie is one of the best guilty pleasure bars in town. While hardly healthy, Rotisserie Amsterdam takes the junk out of “junk food” by using the finest quality ingredients and making the everything - yes, even the sauces, pickles and buns - from scratch. Wash down all that goodness with a cocktail or a wide range of local craft beers. Luckily, you’ll never have to travel far to get your fix, as Rotisserie has a second location on Beukenplein 17 in Amsterdam East.

Vlaamsch Broodhuys Bakers at the Vlaamsch Broodhuys bake their bread and pastries with just as much dedication as master chefs cook their food, using high quality ingredients and their years of experience. No wonder that only the center already counts 8 stores, which are open 7 days a week for coffee, lunch or your favorite groceries. At the Haarlemmerstraat you can even buy all kinds of delicacies to combine with your bread, like cheeses, salmon, tapenades and oils, and even beers, wines and so on. Everything for a great picknick at the nearby Westerpark.

EAST

Eddy Spaghetti A pizza stone’s throw away from busy Beukenplein, at up-and coming Krugerplein, sits one of the East’s best-kept secrets. With classic plates of pasta (most of which can be ordered gluten-free), excellent antipasti platters – as well as pizzas, classic Italian desserts like panna cotta and tiramisu and a wide range of aperitifs and cocktails, it’s hard to beat this local gem. This charming little Italian spot may be hidden for some, but loved by many. Be aware that space is limited! Generally, the earlier you get there, the better!

Bijenkorf Rituals and Rijksmuseum have created a special collection in an exclusive collaboration: the Amsterdam Collection. A collection that takes you back to the Golden Age, when for the first time, Asian luxury products coloured and influenced Amsterdam. The special design is inspired by a seventeenth-century vase of Delftware that can be seen in Rijksmuseum. The spicy scent used in the collection of nine products - from a scented candle and interior perfume to body cream and hand balm - opens with a soft note of Dutch tulip and the refreshing scent of Japanese yuzu (a citrus) and ends in a fragrant bouquet of exotic flowers. Besides the Rituals shops and the Rijksmuseum this exclusive collection can be purchased at de Bijenkorf.

Cigaragua In the opinion of Sasja van Horssen Nicaraguan cigars are “the best cigars in the world.” That is why he decided to start the world’s first Nicaraguan cigar shop in Amsterdam. Perhaps not quite as famous as their brothers from Cuba, but Nicaraguan cigars are praised by aficionados for their full rich flavor. Over 900 varieties of handmade cigars from Nicaragua are preserved at a perfect humidity of 72 per cent in the largest walk-in humidor of Europe. The shop also boasts one of the largest cigar lounges in the country. Definitely worth a visit for cigar lovers.
