Artists, designers, and architects were challenged to question, test and shake up the city along the lines of this year’s theme of Amsterdam Light Festival: Disrupt! Suitably, humanity’s disruptive effect on our climate and natural environment emerged as a major theme and inspiration for the participating creative professionals. Many references to the effects of global warming and rising sea levels will be on display. The city itself will also play a role in the exhibition. Along the route, different places and buildings that have connection with the theme Disrupt! will be highlighted and explained.

Art Deco grandeur With an Art Deco facade and a dazzling interior design, Pathé Tuschinsky was already considered to be the most stunning cinema in the Netherlands. Full of glazed tiles, ceramic sculptures, wrought-iron decorations, plush lamps and sumptuous carpets, all exposed in a seriously mind-blowing main hall. And most recently it even got better: the interiors of hall 2 and 3 were reconstructed into their original grandeur of the 1920’s with a.o. beautiful wall paintings from Pieter den Besten (18941972), that were lost in a big fire. Even more reason to visit this marvelous venue.

Restoring Rembrandt's Masterpiece The Night Watch is one of Rembrandt's most celebrated artworks. This masterpiece dating back to 1642 is now up for restoration. The Rijksmuseum is organising this act in a very candid manner. As part of the festive 2019 Year of Rembrandt, the museum allows the public to witness the entire process. Ensuring that visitors can see all the action, Rembrandt's famous painting will be encased in a glass chamber. Before the actual restoration takes place, the audience can see the detailed study and technical examination of The Night Watch. Viewers are also able to follow the entire process online through a digital platform. 3d drawing by Wilmotte & AssociĂŠs Architectes

WHAT’S ON Art and culture in Amsterdam
Look in amazement and wonder at the ingenious, flamboyant, colorful and lavish jewelry worn by tsarina's and noble members of the Russian court who set the tone of the ‘jewelry etiquette’ for ages. Unique in its kind is "flower bouquet of precious stones". A brooch of sapphires, rubies, topazes and emeralds ordered by Tsarina Elisabeth (17091762) with more than 400 diamonds and more than 450 rose cut and blue and yellow diamonds. No less impressive: the jewel box of Catharina the Great (172-1796). Three kilos heavy and strewn with hundreds of gems, with 26 rubies, 24 emeralds and various cameos as eye-catchers. To place the splendor of this all in the right setting, the jewels are surrounded by portraits of the original wearers and original ball gowns. Not much imagination needed, to envision yourself invited for ball at the Russian court.

Paris: city of lights, city of arts At the beginning of the last century, Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondrian and other acclaimed artists moved to Paris, then the art capital of the world. They had to survive in a society that became increasingly polarized, nationalistic, xenophobic and anti-Semitic. Migrant Artists tells the story of artists in a foreign country who had the courage to take art to new heights. In spite of their success and achievements, they all had to face the same insurmountable obstacle: they were not French. Spanish-born Picasso arrived penniless but remained loyal to his roots. As a Jewish-Russian in exile, Chagall encountered exclusion and outright anti-Semitism. And Kees van Dongen who became one of Paris’ celebrated society painters, complained in 1906 that the newspapers portrayed him as ‘the dirty foreigner.’ Chagall, Picasso, Mondrian and Others: Migrant Artists in Paris, presents works from the collection of the Stedelijk Museum. Including works by more than 50 artists, photographers and graphic designers. What’s more, the large collection of Chagalls will be on display for the first time in nearly 70 years: 40 works including eight iconic paintings, some of which have been restored for the occasion. The exhibition is a chance to see the work of these modern masters in a new light as well as to discover new artists.

As soon as you enter the main hall of the exhibition ‘Portrait Gallery of the 17th Century’ you will find 300 pairs of eyes gazing down on you. No fewer than 30 gigantic group portraits have been brought together at Hermitage Amsterdam. Due to their extraordinary dimensions, these works are only rarely on display in a setting of this kind. The paintings show regents, militiamen and merchants from a variety of social and religious backgrounds. What they all have in common is worldly success – some of them were among the most powerful and prosperous citizens of the 17th-Century Netherlands. And they were all, at the very least, wealthy enough to be immortalized together with their fellow guild members and trustees by some of the finest painters of their age.
The largest collection of group portraits in the world Surrounded by the huge portraits in the grand hall is the new photography exhibition 'Dutch Masters Revisited'. Thirteen prominent Dutch people of colour take on the role of historical Dutch citizens of colour who, based on historical research, are known to have lived in the Netherlands in the 17th and 18th century.
The exhibition draws from the collections of the Amsterdam Museum and the Rijksmuseum. Rembrandt’s ‘The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Deijman’ and militia group portraits by the likes of Govery Flinck and Nicolaes Pickenoy are but a few examples of the masterpieces on display.

Reborn weddingdresses Why make new when the old is still good? The theme REBORN in the Fashion for Good museum is all about circularity and the need to produce clothing and shoes from existing material. The theme is graced by the temporary exhibition “tesswithlotte” in which a dozen upcycled wedding outfits are shown. Designer Tess van Zalinge and wedding planner Lotte Grossman tackled antique wedding dresses with scissors to combine various parts of different dresses into new contemporary wedding outfits. The result is a small but powerful collection that (almost) makes you want to marry. Until mid-April 2020 you can admire this exhibition on the upper floor ... Fashion for Good is committed to major change for the entire fashion industry. The organization brings together key brands, producers and innovations to work on a fashion industry that is recovering and regenerative instead of the current linear take-make-waste linear model.

seems Helen Verhoeven is the winner of the ABN / AMRO Art Prize. She links subcutaneous emotions and social dilemmas with classical and art-historical iconography. With a surprising outcome, as nothing in her work is what it seems. She breaks with the rules of place, time and space. Verhoeven uses a medieval idiom in which everything can co-exist. Her paintings seduce by a reassuringly recognizable structure, but on closer inspection it is filled with conflicting message. Perpetrators are also victims, violence and intimacy go hand in hand, status and pretense turn out to be masks. In other words: confrontation time with your innermost fears!

Stalker-Tarkovsky
Through the Russian looking glass His work weaves together dreams, memories, past and present. The painter-like beauty of his images, his reflections on humanity and cinema, makes Andrei Tarkovsky (1932-1986) one of the innovators of the cinema. It’s manifested in associative films rich in imagery, such as Andrei Rublev (1966), Solaris (1972), The Mirror (1974) and Stalker (1979). Eye presents a (digitally restored) program devoted to this artist and mystic, focusing on Tarkovsky’s quest for existential truth. To immerse the visitor deeper into his world, a special section presents letters, photos and polaroids provided by Tarkovsky’s son Andrei Andrejevich.
Outsmart Art
Step on a VOC ship
This is the only museum in the Netherlands that shows art works by national and international ‘outsider artists,’ individuals who, for the most part, were not formally trained as artists. Like Willem van Genk (1927-2005). He created his own world from pictures and illustrations he’d cut out of travel guides, brochures and magazines combined with travel maps. The exhibition called Woest (Fierce) offers a complex universe of cities, stations, Zeppelins, overhead lines and transmission towers. Altogether, it creates a spectacle that’ll mesmerize the viewer for hours.
The National Maritime Museum houses one of the worlds most impressive maritime collections. It is also the only museum in Amsterdam with a spectacular outdoor location on the water. At the jetty lies the East Indiaman Amsterdam, an exact copy of the famous VOC ship that was wrecked in 1749 during its first voyage. Step aboard by yourself, or join an expert guide for a special tour. You can also take a free VR journey. Be sure not to miss the two new interior presentations Maps & Marvels and Republic At Sea.

WHEN PEOPLE MOURNE MORE OVER THEIR PETS THAN OVER THEIR RELATIVES
Sometimes people may be mourning more over their pets than over their relatives. One of the reasons: the unconditional love a dog, a cat and all other ‘creatures great and small’ give to us. The exposition De Laatste Aai (The Final Caress) provides insight into the current mourning cult concerning dead pets. Not that long ago, a quick removal was their destiny but now they are commemorated, cremated or buried. Artists present their way of grief in a very personal manner and also question our blindness towards animals in the bio-industry.

Brassaï Retrospective
ART & CULTURE IN AMSTERDAM
Nostalgia in black and white This is the first retrospective of Brassaï (1899- 1984) in the Netherlands. Brassaï - a French photographer of Hungarian descent, is considered as a key figure of 20th-century photography. For example, the way we like to remember Paris in a nostalgic way was ‘invented’ by him. He showcased in a captivating way the high society, including the ballet, opera, intellectual and artistic circles. But he also documented the less elegant, real life aspects of the city of lights.

Bullets, Betrayal and Letters The exhibition Bullets, Betrayal and Letters: Chronicle of a Jewish Family traces a confrontational family history that extends from Poland and Ukraine to the Netherlands. It is the first exhibition in the Netherlands to highlight the mass murder of more than 1.5 million Eastern European Jews. The exhibition recounts the extraordinary story of the family of Amsterdam-born filmmaker Willy Lindwer (1946), who has gained recognition for
his films about the Holocaust, Israel and the Middle East. He decided to document his family history after uncovering letters from his grandfather, Wolf, and shocking discoveries at the site in Ukraine where his grandmother, Ryfka, was murdered.

Peasant Painter This exhibition shows the originality of French artist Jean-François Millet (1814-1875). Instead of focusing on industrialization and urbanization as hallmarks of modern times, he concentrated on the hardships of peasant life. This was one of the reasons why he was one of Vincent van Gogh’s favorite artists. The exhibition, being the first explicitly focusing on his modernism and its international impact, illustrates how progressive Millet’s work was in his own time and how important he was influencing fellow artists - Seurat, Cézanne, Degas, Pissarro, Monet, Munch, Malevich, Dalí - after him.

FUTURE-PROOF AMIR ERFANI (33) VIDEO GAME PRODUCER
Where are you heading? My office. I manage game designers. Are you and Amsterdam a good match? A perfect match. I like Amsterdam because it all in harmony: the colours, the sounds, the houses, the canals, the cyclists and pedestrians. It all functions in a very nice, positive atmosphere. If friends visit you, what do you show them? Not the usual stuff. I like to show them the Marineterrein behind the Scheepvaartmuseum, where a future-proof city district is developed. With nice restaurants too. Or we randomly explore the city by bicycle. Here and then we grab a beer. And once a year I hire a sloop. Including a captain who knows all the little secrets of Amsterdam.

Where are you going? I take the train to Antwerp. With my boyfriend. You don’t like Amsterdam? I do. I love my city. Because here I can dress the way I want. And buy great colourful clothes at T.I.T.S. at the Clercqstraat. I also like shopping in the Nine Streets. Or visit a club like De School or the Ton Ton Club with my friends. To me Amsterdam is a never ending story. So much to discover. What part of Amsterdam you like most? I live in Amsterdam East myself. But for some reason all my friends live in West. And yes: the atmosphere in that neighbourhood is very pleasant. Lots of creative people start their own business there. So you find small restaurants, shops or workshops all over.

Do you live in Amsterdam? I am from Cairo, Egypt, but recently I settled here thanks to my job. Since you are new to our city, what struck you the most? Dutch men! They just don’t know how to flirt. What is it with them? Are they too shy? Or maybe they are all on Tinder? (laughing) I guess so. Everybody buries his head in his smart phone. But nevertheless I find Amsterdammers very kind and helpful. And I enjoy the freedom here. Finally, what you recommend people that have only limited time to visit Amsterdam. Book a canal tour. And just walk, walk, walk. Proper walking shoes and a credit card will guarantee a perfect time in Amsterdam.

Most beautiful street? Definitely Wibautstraat. This broad street with high, concrete buildings is like a small-scale avenue in New York or Berlin. A stark contrast with our historic city centre. MADE IN AMSTERDAM PROUD TO PRESENT
People tend to believe that ‘everything is better at a distance’. But here we show you the opposite: three Amsterdam based brands with local production and an international feel.
Smaak Andre Grundman was once the owner of a shoe, fashion and bag store. A concept store avant-la-lettre. But after a few years he realized that tout le monde was selling fashion and shoes, but to find good bags you really had to try. Bags on offer were either cheap and nasty or so expensive they were not an option for a small retailer. Odd, he thought, there must be a way to produce top quality bags for a reasonable price. Ten years later Smaak (translates as Taste) has 3 stores and over 200 points of sale.
"I HAVE A GOOD NOSE FOR VIBES AND TRENDS: I MIX IT ALL UP IN MY HEAD AND THERE IT FORMS THE CREATION OF THE BAGS" Andre Grundman Founder and owner of Smaak
Do you think you found a niche in the market? I certainly think that’s the case. I just knew that this was an opportunity. After months of research for good manufacturers and material, my bags saw the light of day in 2010. From day one they have been selling well. The years after people found me through mouthto-mouth advertising. I consider that as the proof of the pudding. What is the secret of Smaak? I really think we make a good product for a good price. We only work with the finest leather: strong, but with a soft feel. Combine that with a timeless style and a modern twist and you’ve got your all-time favorite bag that can be worn every day of the week. How does Smaak relate to designer bags like Gucci or Louis Vuitton? I’m confident in saying that the quality is
about equal. We have high quality production values, but are also adding a lot of little details that give our bags a high-end look. Varying from 200 to 400 euros, our price is only about 10 per cent of what you pay for a Gucci or Louis Vuitton. We don’t need to compensate for the inflated marketing budgets of the big fashion brands. And I do all of the design myself … How do you get inspired? By walking the streets. I have a good nose for vibes and trends. I take pictures of colors, materials, and styles vintage and new. I mix it all up in my head and there it forms the creation of 10 to 15 new styles every 6 months. What models are the most successful? They all are, of course … But styles like Blake, Yuna, Adam and Kenny are my all-time bestsellers. No style ever goes out of season, they all stay in shop until they are sold.

MADE IN AMSTERDAM Proud to present
Rain Couture
When staying in Amsterdam, you’re almost guaranteed some rainy days. Thankfully, you don’t need to hide your beautiful outfit under shapeless plastic ponchos anymore: Daphne Gerritse from Rain Couture knows how to make you look great while staying warm and dry.
How did you come up with the idea for Rain Couture? After studying Business and doing part of my Masters in Marketing in one of the rainiest cities in Europe (Bergen, Norway), I landed my first job in Amsterdam. While cycling to work through all kinds of weather, I realized that there wasn’t really a coat available that allowed for the unpredictable weather conditions in The Netherlands, which did not look boring. That’s when I decided to create a product that would combine all best features of a raincoat, an outdoor coat and a designer coat into an all-weather design coat. The materials we use don’t look like waterproof fabrics at all. They have a true fashion look and feel, while still being super functional. The result: A warm, breathing all-weather coat that looks and feels like a high-quality fashion piece. Starting a label with a background in business and marketing… How did that work? I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mentality. As a kid, I was always busy drawing and crafting the things I wanted to have. So, when I had this idea about which I was very passionate, I translated it into determination to make it happen. I taught myself everything about materials, suppliers, production facilities… It has been a long process, but I’m proud of the product we now have to offer. What makes your brand unique? Because I make timeless pieces. My coats are never out of fashion, very wearable for years to come. One of my first designs, the Cape (which I made on the sewing machine together with my mom) I have re-introduced recently. And again, it’s huge success! Furthermore, we made the conscious choice not to participate in fast fashion: we produce according to what we sell and believe in quality over quantity. We offer a variety of styles: from high fashion to casual, from cooler coats for summer to warmer ones for winter.
“RAIN COUTURE IS BORN OUT OF THE NECESSITY OF A GOOD COAT IN VARYING WEATHER CONDITIONS, AND A TYPICAL AMSTERDAM ENTREPRENEURIAL MENTALITY” Daphne Gerritse Founder and owner of Rain Couture 44
HELLOAMS.COM
We developed our own waterproofing method: placing the membrane underneath the fabric as well as a water resistant layer on top. This allows us to use different kinds of fabrics and create a coat that can be cleaned without compromising its waterproofness. What will be your focus for the future? We’re working on creating everything you might need in order to be able to live with the rainy weather: laptop sleeves, pants, shawls… And we pay continuous attention to our sustainability. In January, we are launching our first designs made of 100 % recycled materials! So, keep an eye out for future announcements, and we’d love to welcome you in our stores!

"PEOPLE ARE LOOKING FOR AN ALTERNATIVE TO ALCOHOL BECAUSE OF HEALTH REASONS” Owner's Arrad Eshel (right) & Paul Wilhelm (middle)
Arte & Zayne Tea for two? No. Tea for everyone! That’s the mission of Arte & Zayne. This new tea brand focuses only on the best quality of ecological, handpicked tea available. The enthusiastic owners can convince you easily in their shop that there are many ways to enjoy a good cup, or better still, a good glass of tea. Arrad Eshel explains. Why do you like tea so much? For me it was really a discovery a few years ago: tea is so much more than just adding a bag to hot water. It is a special world that you can experience in our store. It is a matter of seeing, smelling and tasting. A good tea is a special sensation. Does the comparison of tea and wine hold? Certainly, both contain tannin, and they can be combined very well with so-called "food pairing". We have a nice tea that goes super with old cheese, which you normally use with a red wine or port. And white tea goes very well with fish dishes. Tea is the new wine? It is slowly getting there, because more and more people are looking for an alternative to alcohol because of health reasons. Increasingly, tea has become a drinking choice with food and as an alternative gift or present. You are a highend label, a conscious choice? Yes, and yet our target group is not small.
All sorts of people visit our shop. And if you start comparing it’s even not expensive. 100 grams costs an average 24 euros, which you use to make 8 to 10 liters of tea. What makes a tea organic? Very simple, it is not sprayed with fertilizer. And the higher the tea grows, the purer it gets, because it’s harder to reach for machines. What is your favorite kind? I am very charmed by white tea, because it contains almost no bitterness - it is the leaf that is still in the bud. Very fresh and very soft and therefore very easy to combine with herbs and / or fruits. What is new in the world of tea? We see that Africa is emerging as a producing continent. Thanks to good and efficient development aid, they have set up a truly pure-nature cultivation, including fair working conditions and guaranteed child labor free. And it tastes exquisitely!

It is the result of a special partnership between the Rijksmuseum and the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid. One of the curators is Cèlia Querol Torelló who worked close with Gregor Weber, Head of Fine Decorative Arts.

T
he Rijksmuseum’s collection illustrates the history of The Netherlands, from the Middle Ages to the present and counts 1 million objects in total. Vermeer’s Milkmaid, Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait and Rembrandt’s paintings are here on display, but also a gorgeous collection of Delft Blue pottery and Asian art. The Gallery of Honour is an extended corridor directed towards a clear focal point: Rembrandt’s Night Watch. On view in the side alcoves are pieces by other 17th century masters like Frans Hals, Jan Steen, and many more.
THE BUILDING The Rijksmuseum opened its doors in 1800 under the name ‘Nationale Kunstgalerij’ and was housed at Huis ten Bosch in The Hague. In 1808, it moved to Amsterdam where it was initially established in the Royal Palace on Dam Square and later in the Trippenhuis on Kloveniersburgwal. The current building (anno 1885) was designed by Pierre Cuypers, the architect also responsible for the Neo-Gothic look of the Central Station. Over the years, growing collections and expanding museum insights resulted in many changes: rooms were added and courtyards were covered to create more space. Late 20th century it was clear that the building gradually started to fall short of modern requirements. The renovation in which the original Cuypers structure was reinvented, lasted 10 years. Completed in 2013, the result saw a dazzling new museum where paintings, applied art and ‘history’ are no longer displayed in separate parts, but form a chronological circuit of 1,5 kilometers that tells the fascinating story of Dutch art and history.

Why see this exhibition? For the Netherlands, it is the first Dutch-Spanish exhibition from the Golden Age. We show 60 works in total, including 18 from the Prado in Madrid. But we also received very special loans from 20 other institutions and private collectors. So it’s all very unique. How did you and Gregor Weber approach this exhibition? We want the audience to experience the paintings in a more personal and moving way, rather than ‘understand’ them by reading the explanation tags. Therefore, we separated them from the paintings. The visual aspect is very strong and powerful. Rembrandt and Velazquez were contemporaries, but never met. How does their art relate? Their approach towards their models is exactly the same: they were both able to penetrate their models in a very psychological way. Even though they had such different backgrounds - Rembrandt a businessman and Velazquez a court painter – they were both first and foremost artists. You are still very young; how did you end up in such a prestigious exhibition? I am one of the few Spanish people who is specialized in Dutch and Flemish art, and I speak Spanish. That made me fit in. But I realize how special this is for an early career. And looking back I still cannot believe it’s all true. Even the Spanish king came for the opening. Did you meet him? Yes, we gave him a tour. Very exciting, but not my highlight. This was when all the trucks arrived with the paintings and they finally found their spot on the walls … That was magic. Also working so close with a team was very special to me. To me this was a dream job. HELLOAMS.COM

HAARLEMMERSTRAAT & JORDAAN DISCOVER AMSTERDAM DISTRICTS
The Jordaan and the Haarlemmerstraat and -dijk are possibly the most famous neighbourhoods in the Netherlands. Expect here the unexpected with lots of odd little shops, funny stores and trendy but affordable restaurants and bars. This once working-class bastion - renowned for tight community bonds, radical politics and a love for drink and over-the-top sing-alongs - underwent decades of gentrification and attracts now upwardly-mobile residents to its scenic streets.
T
he Haarlemmerstraat (and its extension de Haarlemmerdijk) starts at the Singel and ends up at the Haarlemmerpoort, one of the old city gateways to the outside world. In the past, it connected to the city of Haarlem. The street covers a one-kilometer distance between the city center and the Amsterdam-West. In the middle of it, you’ll find the West Indische Huis, the former headquarters of the Dutch West-India Company. Here in 1625, the commanders of this trading company gave the order to build a fort on Manhattan, the very beginning of what became New York. In front of
the building you go straight into the buzz of bikes and shoppers, but the backyard of the monument borders the tranquility of the Herengracht. Here also the Jordaan begins at Brouwersgracht, and arches around the western side of Canal Ring between Prinsengracht and Lijnbaansgracht before ending at Leidsegracht. The area north of Rozengracht is a more ‘touristy’ and commercial section, although the quieter area to the south is no less scenic.
Tally Ho Tally-Ho has been a household name in Holland for more than 50 years. Their latest store was opened in Amsterdam at the dynamic Haarlemmerplein. SPOTLIGHT MUSEUM OF BAGS
A visit to the Museum of Bags is a double treat. It houses more than 5000 (!) bags and related objects and is located in a building that is part of the canal belt that is on the list Manon Schaap of the UNESCO World DIRECTOR Heritage. Manon Schaap, recently appointed as the new director, wants to present and communicate the museum and its collection in a different way with an innovative vision.
Hand bag with feathers, Alexander McQueen (2003)
The Museum of Bags What is your starting point? "The first question I ask myself is: ‘Do you see the Museum of Bags as a museum or as a house?’ I want to emphasize and develop that. An inspiring house where people think ‘out of the bag.’ To achieve this, just like building a brand, you look first at your past and present. Where do we come from, who are we, what drives us, and then define the future." How? “Bags are usually presented as an object. I think from the subject; place a bag in a different context, find a connection. For example, what is the cultural, fashion, but also the social background." 58
HELLOAMS.COM
How do you get that across? “I think from the perspective of cultural entrepreneurship. As a house you have to keep up with the times. How do you surprise and stimulate people - local, national and international - to visit us? You can do this by telling other stories from the bag. The permanent collection offers me the ‘handles.’ For example, who made the bag, what was it for, but also: what is the identity and message of the object in a certain environment? How did it come about at all?" Also for millennials? "Absolutely. I involve young designers, students and collaboration partners. I see the museum as a platform, a laboratory where
we can try things and present them to visitors. That doesn't have to be complicated, conceptual and abstract - what I find interesting is a different association. How do you visualize and how do you tell it? How do you surprise visitors with both inspiring and innovative remarkable knowledge?” A bag is more than an accessory? “Of course, the bag as an object is an identity. With the right one you carry out a statement, or deliberately not, which may be about style but also about mentality and attitude. A bag is designed, made and carried by a person. The bag is part of design, fashion and industry. It's basically applied art, so you can involve other disciplines -
Program Permanent exhibition Your bag reflects the given period of time OBSESSED! Jewellery Festival Young talent Simon Marsiglia exhibits his latest work (30 october - 1 december) Family Affair From the archives more than 100 bags are being showcased which each have a special character and together form an inspiring family. Trunk Show An exposition about travel and craftmanship. A selection from the Menko ten Cate collection is on stage, including vintage Louis Vuittons, Goyards and Moynats. Names that these days are associated mostly with pop stars and fashion brands, but that once started as makers of suitcases and travel necessaries. Every piece has its own dents, scratches and even sound. By tracing the origins and history, they come to life as it were.
think of fashion and design. With the bag as a starting point, interesting cross-pollinations and collaborations are possible without losing your identity as a house. The Museum of Bags takes the position of inspirator. It reflects our interests and fascinations that we want to share. " Can we already experience that? “We are working on an exciting redesign, the historic space on the second floor is being literally and figuratively thrown open. Daylight inside and fresh air through the building and programming. The permanent collection is temporarily presented in another room; a combination of iconic bags from our own collection, each with its own character, together they are a special family. You are truly immersed in an eclectic amount of shapes, material and color. This presentation offers insight into fashion, business and society from the 20th and 21st century.
Your favorite? “The oldest in our collection. A men's bag made of goat leather from the 16th century worn by a merchant on his belt. Functional, but even feminine and soft in shape. The special thing is, that it has 18 compartments - several of which secrets compartments for valuable papers and objects."
(12 December 2019 22 March 2020)
What are you most looking forward to? “The redesign and the first exhibition in this new space. By giving the museum a more open character, we connect with the city so that locals and visitors become more aware of our existence. In addition, the exhibition ‘trunk show’ will open on 12 December, a selection of magic trunks from the Menko ten Cate Collection. Beautiful historic suitcases from Louis Vuitton and Goyard, among others, that make us yearn for the past of ‘grandiose’ journeys and provide us with travel imaginary à la Harry Potter.” HELLOAMS.COM

Café Caron & Petit Caron
Bienvenue chez Caron!
O
n mange! Everybody knows Alain Caron as a beloved tv-chef and writer. This self-made French chef followed his love to the Netherlands from Paris in the 1980s and has had a say in how the Dutch eat. His network of Dutch, French and other world renowned chefs is legendary. Caron knows the quintessence of conviviality by keeping the highest standards in ingredients and cooking methods.
LAISSEZ-FAIRE AMSTERDAM ATMOSPHERE One of Alain’s four sons, Tom, talks to us about this Amsterdam family business: “Located in the culinary neighborhood de Pijp, Café Caron and Petit Caron are ‘a home away from home’ for any guest. We always aim for a low-key, relaxed atmosphere to enjoy the best food and wines. In our restaurants you’ll find the basics of French cuisine in all its simplicity with a contemporary twist.”
While Café Caron goes for the more classic bistro style, Petit Caron is a Parisian culinary playground for sons Tom and David. “When the days shorten it changes from the fun terrace vibe into warm inviting places, where family, friends and neighbors meet. We bring heartful autumn classics like pheasant, partridge and wild boar paired with all kinds of cabbages and mushrooms. My father is the example of a patron who carefully chooses ingredients with respect for nature and the environment and his memories of French seasonal classics like Lapin Girolles.”
LE NOUVEAU BEAUJOLAIS EST ARRIVÉ! “For the Caron family wine is as important as food,” says Tom. “At Café Caron you go for the classic list or discreetly ask for the little red book with cellar specials. Very worthwhile reading if you are a connoisseur. “At Petit Caron we love to create special tasting
menu’s like a champagne list for the festive season or French apéritifs. This season we selected the long-established and always interesting Beaujolais region. For the French it is a highly respected wine to drink at family meals and it’s often served in the Paris bistros.”
L’ART DE LA TABLE The Caron family keeps the classic, honest and timeless French cuisine on edge. Together with a passionate team, Alain Caron spreads the word in a very personal way. He has educated and inspired many young chefs and the Dutch public of how to enjoy l’art de la table. So even if you don’t know anyone in town and want a fun culinary evening, Café Caron and Petit Caron will certainly entertain you in the best French conviviality. HELLOAMS.COM

The internationally praised restaurant is part of the exclusive member’s club, Soho House.
ITALIAN MAGNET Originating in London’s Mayfair, Cecconi’s was first opened in 1978 by Enzo Cecconi from famous Cipriani in Venice. The art of fine Italian food was still unknown outside Italy and became a magnet to celebrities and royalty. At this day and age, Cecconi’s
is part of the famous Soho House member’s club with locations worldwide.
CUCINA ITALIA General Manger Joost de Graaf tells us about Cecconi’s and the delicate menu: “We offer a variety of classic ‘cicchetti’, which are small bites to enjoy before your meal, such as aubergine parmigiana and meatballs in tomato sauce with basil. We also have seasonal dishes like pumpkin risotto with goat cheese and sage.” A wood burning oven makes perfect pizza and pizzetta and a charcoal grill guarantees smoky flavors. Pastas are homemade and by hand in many variations. At the main bar, classic cocktails like Negroni or

‘AS A DIRECTOR YOU CANNOT SEIZE CONTROL. YOU’VE GOT TO EARN IT.’
You could just meet her at a wobbly table in her favorite pub: Café Heuvel. It’s one of the oldest cafés in Amsterdam where the interior has stood still for 100 years. And as it happens, actress and since recent, director Halina Reijn, is always ready for a chat about ‘her’ Amsterdam. Today, however, she prefers to talk about her directorial debut. Her first film "Instinct" received rave reviews worldwide and was immediately the winner of the Locarno Film Festival. In the meantime, the film cans have been sent to Los Angels with sufficient postage: "Instinct" is the Dutch Oscar entry in the category Best Foreign Film.
H
alina Reyn, who until now mainly enjoyed fame in the Netherlands as an actress and muse of director Ivo van Hove (known from Bowie's Lazarus among others), has been on stage since she was ten. At Toneelgroep Amsterdam she mesmerized the audience in classical plays such as William Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew and Ibsen’s A Doll’s House. When we talk to her she beams: “It's going very well. I am very satisfied and happy. I’ve enjoyed our film and the appreciation we have received.” Our film? Wasn't it your idea, your script and your direction? “You don't make any film on your own. Certainly not
with this production. Both Carice van Houten, lead actress (starred as Melisandre in Game of Thrones) and Marwan Kenzari, co-star (known from Jafar in Disney's live action version of Aladdin) really gave it their best. Just like everyone who participated, by the way. We had to record everything in just 23 shooting days. I am so happy that we made the film with the whole team and from our hearts. We never dreamed that the audience would react so enthusiastically.” For Halina, directing was one big discovery, a relief. “My heart is on stage. But acting is so much harder. The film is about Nicoline, a psychotherapist (Carice) who falls in love with Idris (Marwan), a sex offender who she treats in a prison. Although the movie is embraced internationally and can be seen at leading film festivals, this unusual relationship also raises questions. That is exactly what Halina had in mind. “Make people think, to provoke discussion. Our prison system is unknown abroad and people experience this unusual situation as an abstract fact. ” The film was shot in Amsterdam. “Mostly in the Bijlmer Prison, which is currently being demolished. There is nothing that evaporates faster." Inspite of the fact that everyone wants to know her, you can also read on her Facebook page how she walks around alone at a film makers cocktail party at the Chicago Film Festival. She writes: "I feel lonely but even more grateful and happy." What’s next? “The great thing is that new doors are opening for me and new collaborations and budgets are at the horizon. And it’s really great to get opportunities and attention from abroad. But I will always remain faithful to my Dutch common sense, an ideal compass. On to my next project, on my Dutch wooden shoes."

o matter what day you arrive at the generous forecourt of GASSAN’s head office, whether it’s Christmas or New Year’s Day, at all times thousands of people from all over the world flock here. Curious about the magical world of the diamond – after all, a symbol of riches and success. "We receive almost 400.000 visitors a year," says Martijn Becker (marketing&sales) during a tour.

a kind of founder of our current educational tours," Benno Leeser told Business News Radio earlier this year. In the same broadcast, he explains how Amsterdam and Antwerp relate to each other when it comes to the diamond trade: “We have the largest consumer trade here, and Antwerp is mainly wholesale. That's where big money is earned.” He knows, because in addition to Amsterdam, Leeser also has an office in Antwerp, where he buys his rough stones.
CITY OF DIAMONDS Diamonds are big business in Amsterdam. It's not for nothing that the city bears the proud alias City of Diamonds, partly thanks to GASSAN’s CEO Benno Leeser. Third generation diamond dealer who managed to expand the company from a sole trader to a multibrand business with 500 employees and 22 own stores (including 14 on Schiphol Airport, 4 downtown and 4 in Singapore) where, in addition to its own GASSAN collection, watches and jewelry from luxury brands are sold. He moved to the headquarters on the Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat in 1990, which had housed a textile manufacturer for many years. The building - originally set up as a steam diamond mill by the Boas brothers (1880) – had become vacant during the Second World War when the diamond trade fell into decline. After the war, Leeser's grandfather Samuel GASSAN settled in the old diamond exchange on Weesperplein, where the creative hub Capital C is now located. Closely situated near the luxurious Amstel Hotel, he received rich Americans to whom he sold his goods and with whom he gladly shared his knowledge. "My grandfather was 72

CRAFT ATMOSPHERE Back to the diamond factory. When you enter, the first thing you notice is the traditional atmosphere. Authentic work benches with behind them diamond cutters in plain dust coats. A little further at the workshop the gold and silversmiths - also behind original workbenches – are always stand by to customize a ring, to repair a break, or to set a diamond into a jewel. Very different from the jetset ambience that you would probably expect from a diamond dealer. We see overviews of diamond gradings and of the many different cutting methods. And we learn from master cutter Marie-Louise Bartels that cutting shape is one of the four values that determine the quality of a diamond, in addition to carat, color and purity. "We almost exclusively sell stones with a triple excellent certificate," explains Bartels. “That means that all gradings are optimal.” It is mainly the GASSAN 121 that is sold here: the worldwide patented grind shape with 121 facets that was developed by Steve Bierman in 2005 and is praised for its ultimate color and brilliance. "The difficulty in cutting those facets is in creating the right proportions,

among other things," explains Bierman. “With a well-cut diamond, you see arrows and hearts formed in the shape. But polishing the surfaces is important as this also helps to define the brilliance of the stone.”
FAMILY AND ROLEX In addition to all this technical information, we also meet the Leeser family during the tour. In the GASSAN Timeline, the family history including photos and trophies is explained and we see how the fourth generation has now made its entrée. Daughter Debora with her own jewels collection Choices by DL and son David as manager of watches and various shops at Schiphol and Singapore Airport. "Family is everything for our director," explains Becker. When asked which trophy is dearest to his boss, he does not have to think long: "The award in 2013 for Best Family Business of the Netherlands." After the tour, the built-up hunger for stones and jewelry can be satisfied in a lavish shop with jewelry and watches in all price categories. In a range of 5 euros to the sky is the limit, everyone can buy a nice souvenir here. Those who walk a little further, end up in the in-house Rolex boutique with their own Rolex workshop where Rolex certified specialists carry out repairs and adjustments "on the spot.” And if you haven't seen enough diamonds, you can venture out to the stores on the Dam Square or at the PC Hooftstraat. Or dive into one of the the shops at Schiphol Airport on the way home. It would seem that GASSAN is omnipresent.

TALKING FOOD NEW CHEWS
A special selection of the most trending fast food restaurants in town where ‘fast’ doesn’t mean ‘bad quality’. Hello Amsterdam talked to the founders and their chefs about these distinctive cuisines and restaurant concepts.
“SHARING FOOD IN KOREA IS AN IMPORTANT TRADITION. IT DEFINES A TRADITIONAL WAY OF RESPECT AND FRIENDSHIP.” Kim Chi Wow Van Woustraat 113 | kimchiwow.com

The K factor
L
ocated in the ‘Quartier Latin’ of Amsterdam, de Pijp, Kim Chi Wow is not difficult to spot with its bright pink bamboo interior. It’s key word, or rather, key letter is K. K stands for Korea, a relatively recently arrived cuisine which is getting more and more popular across the world.
BIBIMBAP BUZZ “We fell in love with the soul kitchen of Korea. We may be Dutch, but our passion for Korean food and culture was something we couldn’t ignore,” tells co-owner Marije van Seventer. Passionately Korean kitchen experienced chef Jaymz Pool created a menu with beloved classics, sides, sweets
and matching drinks like Kombucha and Welch’s soda. The star of the menu is bibimbap, the Korean rice dish with lots of vegetables and different preparing methods, from fermented till sautéed. Topped with a sunny side up egg and amazing sauce.

KIMCHI MADNESS
Kim Chi Wow is setup like a traditional streetfood location. You can eat on the spot, order out or visit for takeaway. While you wait, enjoy a little vibe and smell of Korea. The look is fun but the food is serious. And don’t miss out the Korean beauty section, from crazy cute lip-glosses to sheet masks. Kim Chi Wow has an eye for detail for every step of the way.
TAKE IT AWAY Kim Chi Wow would not be a true Korean food place if it didn’t have its own recipe for kimchi, the famously fermented vegetables that is used as cooking ingredient or as a side dish to almost every meal. It spices things up and is seen as very healthy. Van Seventer: “Kimchi is a sacred tradition in almost every Korean family. The use of

FRESH LIVELY FOOD MANTRA “The beauty of good and well-thought Asian cuisine is that every bowl and plate is filled with the best fresh cooked ingredients. Our menu has been created to soothe, nourish, sustain and inspire; that’s our mantra,” says Schrama. “Perfect for shareto-taste with all kinds of flavorsome rice and noodle dishes, fresh salads and happy desserts. Wagamama is a staple of modern Asian cuisine of amazing colors, aroma’s, flavors and spices. And with the idea that

Is it a shop? Is it a gallery? It’s both! Cobra Art started out 30 years ago as a whole sale company for art, but a few years ago the company opened galleries around the country. We have galleries in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Dusseldorf and recently we added London. And there is room for expanding. How did the company start? The owner Mike van Rijswijk started 30 years ago with framed reproductions and screen prints. But soon he raised the company to a higher level, together with his wife Jeannette, by developing their own art collections in collaboration with international photographers and artists. What kind of art is Cobra Art? Young, colorful and controversial. It has a sense of coolness, showing pop art, popstars, and icons like Mickey Mouse or fashion statements. Our main whole sale business is photo art on plexiglass. But in the galleries we like to focus on the Masterpieces collection. How do they relate: gallery and whole sale section? You can consider the gallery as a regional showroom from the whole sale business. We expose the art that has been collected through our head office in Veenendaal. In the gallery everyone can pop in at every time.. How is the art selected? The owners Mike & Jeannette van Rijswijk decide. They are always looking for new talents, traveling the world and meeting lots of professionals in the field. Every six months the collections in the galleries completely change. This season, for example, we have a duo exposition by painter Loes van Delft and photographer Philippe Shangti. An exciting combination of two artists whose only resemblance is that they are both young. Young art for a young public? Absolutely. We have a price range from 700 to 19.000 euros. Meaning that we are a very accessible gallery, also for starters. All ages are welcome, especially the young at heart.

Keren de Vreede Art Gallery On one of Amsterdam’s most famous canals, you will find a little art gallery that has its walls filled with explosions of colour. When you are around the abstract works, you feel the positive energy, and can’t help but feel happy. Keren de Vreede, the artist who creates all this joy, has just the same effect on you. With its magnificent works of art, this gallery is definitely worth a visit. De Vreede is a self-taught artist who discovered the desire to paint in her early years. She started experimenting with abstract art that has multiple layers and while doing so she switched from oil to acrylic paint, because of the drying time between the layers and the intensity of the colours that acrylic paint provides. She started playing with the paint using merely her hands, positioning the canvas on the floor instead of using the traditional easel. ‘’When you paint with your hands, you can move the colours around on the canvas in a different way than when using a brush’’. Bright colors, think paint and bold and daring lines are the char-
acteristics of her paintings. They reflect her passion for life, her positive outlook and her bright personality. When visiting Amsterdam, weave your way down to the Prinsengracht, and make sure you visit Keren de Vreede’s Art Gallery, where the local artist is happy to chat about her textural floral canvases. Her paintings are not only beautiful, they are also try exceptional. Every painting unique in its sort and impossible to replicate, even by Keren herself.
