City of Cape Town New Water Programme: Table Mountain Group Aquifer Abstraction The City has been receiving water from this major aquifer for the past year. The City of Cape Town’s Table Mountain Group (TMG) Aquifer Feasibility Study and Pilot Project was started in 2002, where groundwater exploration has been undertaken at various target sites from Steenbras Dam northwards to Wemmershoek Dam. Groundwater development and wellfield implementation has been initiated at the planned 20-25 million litre per day Steenbras Well (adjacent to upper and lower Steenbras Dam) since 2017 as part of the City of Cape Town’s New Water Programme where borehole yields of between 10-50 litres per second have been encountered within TMG aquifers along the major Steenbras-Brandvlei Megafault Zone. Further deep (up to 500-1000 metres) TMG groundwater exploration has been undertaken in the Grabouw-Eikenhof and Theewaterskloof Dam areas for future TMG wellfield development. Cape Flats Aquifer In 2017, emergency groundwater development of the Cape Flats Aquifer was started as part of the City’s New Water Programme, which underlies much of the Cape Flats area. The project is based on the Cape Flats Aquifer management strategy and entails both emergency supply and long-term resilience through managed aquifer recharge (MAR), which aims to improve aquifer and ecosystem functioning while maximising storage and yield (together known as the Cape Flats Aquifer Management Scheme). Over 260 boreholes have been drilled since January 2018, comprising a combination of exploration, monitoring, production and injection boreholes linked to MAR. Atlantis Aquifer Work began in 2017 to improve access to the proven groundwater resources in Atlantis, as part of the City’s New Water Programme. This has been achieved through optimisation of available infrastructure and management of various scheme components (existing wellfields, the Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) scheme and water treatment and reticulation systems) to support the City in meeting the immediate emergency water demand (including supplying water to Melkbos in times of emergency). Redrilling of production boreholes, redesign and refurbishment of stormwater and infiltration basins, re-establishment of a monitoring network, the modernisation of monitoring techniques as well as undertaking an integrated water use licence application all form part of the work in Atlantis. In parallel to this, feasibility studies are being initiated for wellfield expansion and enhancing MAR with the aim of improving resilience and assurance of supply in the short term without compromising expanded long-term supply from the Atlantis Water Resource Management Scheme. Waterwise With much relief, Cape Town has experienced two consecutive high rainfall winter seasons. Despite our dams almost being at capacity, residents and visitors are always encouraged to be conscious in our collective ongoing and efforts to be an ecoconscious and waterwise city.

south african women in sport August is national Women’s Month and we’re celebrating some old and new sporting greats who have carved a name for themselves in the world of South African and international sport.
TATJANA SCHOENMAKER (24) Swimming sensation Tatjana Schoenmaker, who hails from Pretoria, swam her way into the record books at the Tokyo Olympics, breaking Olympic and world records for breaststroke, and earned South Africa’s only gold medal by storming to a world record time in the 200m breaststroke on 30 July 2021. Her time of 2:18.95 left her nearly a second ahead of Americans Lilly King and Annie Lazor, who took the silver and bronze medals She was competing in her eighth race in five days and delivered a near-perfect performance under extreme pressure. Schoenmaker, who holds a BCom degree in financial science from the University of Pretoria, also won silver in the 100m breaststroke on 27 July, having set an Olympic record in the heats. Schoenmaker quickly become the darling of the Olympic village because of her genuine delight and surprise at her performances. She was already close to tears after it hit her that she had won the 200m final, seconds after touching the wall, and her reaction when she realised it was a world record was priceless. She let out a spontaneous shriek of delight, which even gave rival Lazor a reason to smile, and she came over to hug the emotional South African. Schoenmaker had exceeded all her expectations: this being her first Olympics, she just wanted to make the final. While most of South Africa was in lockdown, Schoenmaker and her training partners suffered in freezing air

temperatures at the University of Pretoria’s outdoor pool through winter to be ready for Tokyo. Under the guidance of renowned coach Rocco Meiring from the age of 14, Schoenmaker built her fitness and mental strength and honed her technique in tough conditions. Schoenmaker’s performance could motivate young female swimmers in the country not to give up on their swimming career straight after high school.
BIANCA BUITENDAG (27) The surfer from the Garden Route ended her professional surfing career on a high, taking silver at the Tokyo Olympic Games and motivating young surfers from South Africa to aspire for more. Not many South Africans outside the country’s passionate surfing community would have heard of Bianca Buitendag prior to the Olympics. But with each round of the inaugural surfing competition, the 27-year-old crept into the hearts and minds of those back home who were excitedly monitoring her progress on television in the early hours of the morning. Surfing was one of four new events introduced at the Olympics along with skateboarding, sport climbing and karate. After eliminating several higher ranked surfers on the way to the final, she eventually succumbed in the final to fourtime world champion Carissa Moore of the United States, the competition’s top seed. Bianca can claim much of the credit for cultivating a new army of surfing fans in South Africa and raising the profile of the sport. Born in Johannesburg, she spent her formative years in Strand and then moved to Victoria Bay on the Garden Route at the age of 12. Her most treasured memories are waking up early to explore the surrounding coast with her father and brothers, who were also surfers. A trip with her parents to Australia in 2007 saw Buitendag, then 14, take her first steps on what was to become a successful career on the world circuit. Keen to learn about
their daughter’s surfing abilities, her parents organised an all-day session with internationally renowned surfing coach Martin Dunn at his training camp in Old Bar, New South Wales. The assessment from Dunn, regarded as the godfather of surf coaching, was glowing enough for the family to invest in their daughter’s fledgling career. During her teenage years, she competed regularly around the world until, at 19, she qualified to join the Women’s Championship Tour. She reached her highest ranking of no. 4 in 2015. In the same year, her father died. She returned home for the funeral from France, where she had been living, but then it was back to the international contests, which were a welcome distraction and the pleasure gained from riding the waves slowly healed her pain. Despite her ranking declining after that, she secured Olympic qualification with her performances at the 2019 International Surfing Association World Surfing Games in Miyazaki, Japan. Winning an Olympic silver for her country proved the perfect way for her to bow out. The Olympics was her last event as a professional. On her return from the Olympics, Bianca will be focusing her energies on working with Life Community Services, a George-based Christian non-governmental organisation that works with vulnerable and orphaned children in the area. This middle-distance athlete has won two Olympic gold medals and three World Championships gold medals in the women’s 800 metres. She is a Sports Science graduate who now runs an athletics club and a foundation.
SA Netball captain Bongi Msomi has represented South Africa at the Netball World Cup three times. Most recently, she led the Proteas to fourth place at the 2019 edition in England, the country’s best performance at the showpiece. She is looking forward to the next Netball World Cup that South Africa will host in 2023 in Cape Town.
Semenya grew up in Limpopo Province, the fourth-youngest of five children, collecting firewood, fetching water running around the village barefoot before being given the opportunity to train as a professional athlete. Semenya is very committed to her family and maintains close links to her roots. There is nothing that makes her happier than to have her family around her.This simple upbringing influenced her decision to found Masai Athletics Club to coach aspiring young runners from the region. The club’s mission is to provide love, support and appreciation for young children and a sense of routine and stability in their lives. The idea is for the children to wake up smiling and looking forward to training. Through the Caster Semenya Foundation, Semenya trains and assists young athletes, and supports campaigns to distribute menstrual cups to disadvantaged South African girls, supporting them to remain in school during their menstrual cycles. She was also chosen to carry the country’s flag during the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Msomi has a National Diploma in Sport Management through the Durban University of Technology. As well as still being an active player, she is also University of Johannesburg (UJ) netball club manager and coach. She has worked as an ambassador for the Girls Only Project, an initiative that deals with the empowerment of women and girls through sport. She is also the founder of the Bongi Msomi Netball Project, a non-profit company which focuses on raising the profile of netball through skills development, the transfer of knowledge and experiences gained, as well as the holistic development of players and coaches In June 2021, American sports agency, Roc Nation Sports, announced Bongiwe Msomi as one of the South African sports stars to join their global network of mentees and ambassadors. Roc Nation Sports focuses on elevating athletes’ careers on a global scale both on and off the field. Bongiwe hails from Hammarsdale, a small town 50km away from Durban. She cemented herself as a netball player in 2009, when she captained the Under21 national side before joining the senior team in 2011. She has been the captain of the Proteas since 2016.

The 2021 instalment of the annual Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has been confirmed by its organisers. Event planning has gone full steam ahead but with a major overhaul to ensure the safety of all of participants. “Following extensive consultations and detailed review with the City of Cape Town, Athletics South Africa and National Government, we developed and presented an extensive COVID-19 Risk Mitigation Plan for the event, and received their full support to go ahead with our planning of a safe and enjoyable race on 17 October,” confirms Renee Jordaan, Sanlam Cape Town Marathon Race Director. The Risk Mitigation Plan includes the following adjustments to the 2021 event format: Changes to the Marathon • Marathon entries will be limited to 12,000 runners only. • The Start will move from Beach Road to Fritz Sonnenberg Road, with participants joining their start batches on the Cape Town Stadium Forecourt. • A staggered start will see runners setting off in seeded batched groups, allowing for ample social distancing, between 06h15 and 06h50. • Seeding will be based on past race results, not limited to the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon. • Runners’ finishing times will be calculated from mat-to-mat and not gun-to-mat. • The final cut off is still 6.5 hours and will be based on the last group of runners starting the race.
Compulsory COVID Antigen Testing To reduce the risk of Covid-19 transmission and infection, all runners and crew will undergo compulsory Covid-19 antigen testing in the 72 hours prior to the race. Testing will be compulsory regardless of vaccination status and is free of charge. All runners will be tested at Cape Town Stadium before entering the Expo space where they will collect their race numbers. Antigen test results will be available within 15 minutes. Trail Runs Going Ahead - 5km & 10km Peace Runs Go Virtual “Due to COVID restrictions, we are sadly required to cancel the 5km and 10km Peace Runs, but the good news is that these events will take place in virtual format, and runners can run the Peace Runs along their favourite running routes, no matter where they are. The all-new 46km Cape Town Trail Marathon and 22km Trail Run will still go ahead on 16 October,” says Sanlam Cape Town Marathon General Manager, Barry van Blerk. The 5km & 10km Virtual Peace Runs will be free of charge. Runners can enter online via www.capetownmarathon.com to receive app download instructions. All 5km and 10km Peace Run entrants will receive a refund, and an email with detailed instructions will be sent to all entrants who have been affected. family connect Netcare launches Family Connect Line to keep COVID-19 patients and their loved ones connected Dedicated personnel deployed to enhance communication between patients and families In mid-January 2021 Netcare launched a dedicated support line to keep next-of-kin informed on the status of their loved ones who have been hospitalised with COVID-19 and, where possible, to facilitate direct communication between patients and their families. This is in line with the healthcare group’s focus on placing each patient in hospital and their loved ones at the centre of the care provided to them. “The significant surge in people with COVID-19 infections requiring hospitalisation has forced us to focus our attention primarily on optimising our clinical resources to provide the best and safest care possible for all patients,” says Dr Richard Friedland, chief executive officer of Netcare. Unfortunately, as a result of the strain on our resources, communication with patients’ loved ones has at times been affected. “We understand that the hospitalisation of a loved one can be very stressful and anxiety provoking for the next-of-kin, especially during this time when, in order to mitigate the risk of the virus spreading in our hospitals, visitation has been suspended other than in exceptional cases. “As a result and in an effort to improve communication, we have set up the Netcare Family Connect Line. This makes it possible for families to engage with dedicated personnel, mainly social workers who we deployed for this purpose, for information on the status of their loved ones admitted with COVID-19 to any of our Netcare hospitals countrywide, whilst enabling us to maintain patient confidentiality,” Dr Friedland explained. “We understand how crucial it is for families to know how their loved ones in our care are doing, and this new service is dedicated to fulfilling this need,” Dr Friedland says. The number for the Netcare Family Connect Line is 0800 111 266. It will be operational weekdays from 08:00 to 18:00 and weekends from 08:00 to 17:00. The Netcare Family Connect Line service enables patients’ next-of-kin to connect with one of our team of trained call centre professionals, who will facilitate the feedback process. A dedicated Netcare representative at the hospital where the patient is cared for will obtain information on the patient’s status, and will personally phone the family member to provide feedback. Messages to and from the family and patient will also be relayed where direct communication between the family and patient is not possible. Feedback will be provided within hours of the first enquiry and thereafter on a daily basis. Netcare has, since the start of the month, already recruited and deployed 30 social workers to support patients and their families in non-clinical patient liaison roles, which enables healthcare workers to focus solely on their clinical and nursing duties. Netcare hospitals are in the process of expanding the number of social workers to ensure that their services will continue over weekends too. “Already, we are seeing the profound value that the social workers’ efforts have brought for families through facilitating better communication in these unprecedented times, and we believe that this telephonic support service will enhance connection between patients and their loved ones even further.” How the Netcare Family Connect Line works To ensure that loved ones stay connected to patients admitted to Netcare hospitals with COVID-19, Netcare has established a national Family Connect Line, with dedicated Netcare personnel deployed as liaison between patients and their next-of-kin.
Here’s how to use the line: • Phone 0800 111 266 during the Netcare Family Connect Line’s operating hours: Mondays to Fridays, 08:00 to 18:00 and Saturdays and Sundays, 08:00 to 17:00. • Provide the call centre professional with the patient’s case number, which will enable them to immediately identify the patient and the hospital where he or she is being cared for, as well as with your name and surname. This case number is sent via sms to patients admitted to hospital as from Monday, 18 January 2021 as well as to those listed as their next-of-kin.
