MASTER HAROLD AND THE BOYS 4 FEB - 15 MARCH NON-SPECIFIC The Trolley Dollies as you have NEVER seen them before! Their brand new show, “NON-Specific” is your exclusive backstage pass and sneak peek into the lives, loves and losses of these three larger-than-life ladies. A musical about the hopes, dreams, fears, maladies, melodramas, traumas and tantrums of SA’s poster girls for travel. It’s their story and it needs to be told… THE PRODUCERS 4 FEB - 28 MARCH
Gate 69, till 29 March, Tickets R520 R600 from www.computicket.mobi “MASTER HAROLD” … AND THE BOYS Set in a tea room in Port Elizabeth on a dreary, wet afternoon in 1950, “Master Harold” … and the Boys is a poignant coming of age story and exploration of a friendship between a young white boy (Hally), and the two adult black men he has grown up around (Sam and Willy), against the backdrop of the oppressive, divisive apartheid laws of the time.
MOFFIE 15 - 29 MARCH
Although society dictates their education are worlds apart, Sam has helped guide Hally from boy to manhood, educating him about the realities and injustices of the world, while Hally in turn teaches Sam what he has learnt at school. Their friendship has taken on an almost fatherly role for Hally, as he struggles with the strained relationship with his alcoholic father.

Hello Cape Town March 2020
During their debates and reminiscing on the rainy afternoon, Sam and Willy talk about their dreams of winning a ball room competition – their ‘world without collisions’ – a metaphor for their aspirations and yearning to create a better life for themselves.
The peace is broken with the news that Hally’s drunken father is returning home, unleashing an anger in Hally that leads to an unprecedented bigoted outburst. Fugard Theatre, 4 Feb - 15 March, Tickets R180 – R250 from www.thefugard.com THE PRODUCERS Based on the hilarious 1968 film, Mel Brooks’ The Producers is a laugh outloud, outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical-comedy that has been a smash hit since its 2001 debut. Fading Broadway producer Max Bialystok (played by Alan Committie) is desperate to get to the top of his profession again, and finds an unlikely ally in mousy accountant Leo Bloom (Richard White), who predicts that one could make far more money with a flop of a show than with a hit. Together, the two set out to produce the worst musical ever to hit Broadway. Unfortunately for them, their show is a huge hit! With no shortage of show-stopping musical numbers, and Brooks’ signature humor keeping audiences in stitches, The Producers is definitely far from a flop. Theatre on The Bay, 4 Feb - 28 March, Tickets R180 – R380 from www.pietertoerien.co.za TRIBUTE TO ERIC CLAPTON Internationally acclaimed guitarists Dimmitrios Giannakis and Lylle Ferreira bring to the stage their lifelong passion for nylon string guitar music across many genres. The two have been performing to sell out audiences for some time. Giannakis just back from performing
overseas at the San Remo Guitar Festival in Italy is well known for his smooth voice and mesmeric guitaring. Ferreira is a Jazz fundi and together the two are an exceptional night out! They will be joined on percussion by good friend a percussionist John Pringle. Expect all your foot tapping favourites! Artscape theatre, 13 & 14 March, Tickets R150 from www.computicket.mobi MOFFIE The Fugard Bioscope present a fortnight of screenings. The year is 1981 and South Africa’s white minority government is embroiled in a conflict on the southern Angolan border. Like all white boys over the age of 16, Nicholas Van der Swart must complete two years of compulsory military service to defend the Apartheid regime. The threat of communism and “die swart gevaar” (the black danger) is at an all-time high. But that’s not the only danger Nicholas faces. He must survive the brutality of the army – something that becomes even more difficult when a connection is sparked between him and a fellow recruit. The Fugard Theatre, 15 - 29 March, Tickets R110 from www.thefugard.com THE LAST FIVE YEARS Considered a masterpiece of modern theatre. An old story told in a new way, this funny and bittersweet musical is an intimate window into the relationship between Cathy, a struggling actress, and Jamie, a budding novelist on the brink of success. Cathy tells her story backwards from the dissolution of their relationship to first meeting, whilst Jamie tells his story chronologically; they meet only once, in the middle, at their wedding. This local production features Fleur du Cap nominee David Ralph Viviers in his musical debut, and making her professional debut is Fleur du Cap nominee Zoë McLaughlin.

FIDELIO IN CONCERT
Free access for all festival goers. Comedia is a foyer display and does not require tickets.
Fidelio tells the story of a young woman, Leonora/Fidelio, who goes undercover as a young male prison warden where her husband, Florestan, is unjustly being kept prisoner. Fidelio’s plan is to find a way to — somehow — free her husband.
Pieter-Dirk Uys returns as Bambi Kellermann.
The opera is based (admittedly loosely) on a true story known to Beethoven’s librettist. With its stirring choruses and soaring vocal ensemble music, Fidelio is a perfect opera for a performance in concert.
Bambi Kellermann is Evita Bezuidenhout’s younger sister – and that’s where the family ties end.
Artscape theatre, 27 - 29 March, Tickets R100 - R280 from www.computicket.mobi
NEVER TOO NAKED
Whereas Tannie Evita is still the most famous white woman in South Africa, Bambi became a grand horizontal of the northern hemisphere and a super-stripper. Never Too Naked is the name of her game and she will share some of her legendary bedtime stories. The little boeremeisie from Bethlehem in the Orange Free State found herself in Vienna in the late 1950s and soon the sweet conservative religious virgin made way for the sophisticated, funny and powerful woman who could fight the world with irony, humour and experience. Her conversation is not for the weakhearted – and as she says: “Bring your own condoms of prejudice and fear.

CHAPMAN’S PEAK DRIVE Chapman’s Peak Drive, fondly known as “Chappies” by the locals is one of Cape Town’s most famous attractions. The drive connects Hout Bay to Noordhoek in 9 kilometres of breath-taking scenery and arguably one of the most beautiful coastal drives on Planet Earth.
The route over Chappies is a way to explore nature at its’ best - whether you are heading to Cape Point, visiting the penguins at Boulders Beach or hitting the beach for some rest and relaxation with sunshine and sand. The many ways of exploring Chapman’s Peak Drive
A mere 25km south of Cape Town’s City Centre, it’s been said that the route is a “Must-do” and “One of the most worthwhile tourist attractions” on any Cape Town itinerary. Chapman’s Peak Drive is a mini paradise! It has the Atlantic Ocean on one side, mountains on the other side and this picture perfect postcard setting makes any visitor want to stop to savour the panoramic views. It’s all about the view! At one end, is the fishing harbor of Hout Bay – presided over by the Sentinel, an iconic landmark in this spectacular setting. The drive winds up to Chapman’s Peak View Point – with dazzling sea views and then drops down to the horse-filled paddocks of Noordhoek. There are numerous points for motorists to pull over and enjoy the views, or capture the magnificence with a photograph (and feel like a professional photographer.) Chapman’s Peak Drive is one of the major routes for visiting the Cape of Good Hope Section of Table Mountain National Park.

Hello Cape Town March 2020
This magnificent wonder of nature continues to delight locals and tourists. Popular for picnics and scenic drives, you can also experience its beauty on foot or by bicycle taking in the awe-inspiring views and winding along its spectacular curves. Some are lucky enough to travel on a Harley Davidson, a vintage sidecar, a trike or a classic Cobra. And when you get to the other side, there’s more to explore. The landscape and the lifestyle has inspired artisans of all disciplines to explore their craft and follow their passion in the surrounding towns and villages. Enjoy the riches of their honed skills from chefs and producers to artists and entrepreneurs. Be Inspired by the wildlife on Chapman’s Peak Drive. Keep your eyes peeled! Chappies offers many different wildlife experiences in their natural habitat – on land, in the water and in the air. From whales, dolphins and seals in the ocean, to insects, butterflies and beetles that pollinate the vegetation, to reptiles such as
the endangered Western Leopard Toad (especially on the Noordhoek side), lizards, tortoises and sometimes snakes. Small mammals can be spotted - baboons; rodents, ranging from the porcupine to mice and dassies (hyrax). In the air marine birds – gulls, terns, waders, cormorants and gannets – can be seen along the coast and at any time of year. Keep a look out for fynbos endemics such as the Cape Sugarbird and orange-breasted sunbird and the commonly spotted red winged starlings. Raptors such as the jackal buzzards are often spotted. Active Adventures from Chapman’s Peak Drive Being active in the great outdoors never felt better. Chapman’s Peak Drive is a natural utopia for walking, hiking, rambling or ambling, whatever your ability or experience level. There’s no better way to communicate with nature and checkout the scenery, than to lace up your comfy shoes, strap on a backpack and hit the trail. Enjoy the restorative benefits of a great walk, the tranquillity of paddling in a sea-kayak below the towering cliffs, the adrenalin rush of surfing some big waves or the thrill of cycling on mountain passes. All you have to do is. “Pick Your Pace!”
Chapman’s Peak Drive a national treasure Chappies was named after a lowly Captain’s mate, John Chapman, who was sent ashore to look for supplies in 1907, when the ship called ‘Consent’, was stranded in the waters of Hout Bay. The ship’s pilot recorded the bay as ‘Chapman’s Chaunce’ (chance) and the name remained as such. The Drive itself took 7 years to construct and cost ₤20 000. On 6 May 1922 the road was opened by the Governor of the Union of South Africa, His Royal Highness Prince Arthur of Connaught. The drive was a remarkable feat of engineering. In recent times – rock-fall protections measures such as catch fences, half-tunnels and a canopy structure have earned engineers more accolades, and road users are kept safe from potential rock falls. Chapman’s Peak Drive Toll Road Chapman’s Peak re-opened as a Toll Road in December 2003. The drive is monitored by an integrated traffic & Incident management system, including weather monitoring, CCTV cameras and variable message signs. Any adverse or highrisk weather situations may result in immediate road closure. It remains an official tourist attraction for international and national visitors to Cape Town. Take a drive and see for yourself. Hello Cape Town March 2020 l

THE SOUNDS OF SOUTH AFRICA COME TO LIFE AT THE CAPE TOWN CARNIVAL 2020 From marimba to marabi, uhadi to riel. The voices of our women to the footsteps of our ancestors. The beat of the drum, to the echoing calls for change. The Cape Town Carnival theme this year, “Incredible Journey: Sounds of South Africa” showcases the music, song, dance and art of our country. Each is so powerful and distinct; it connects us to our past, our future, our country and each other. Since June last year, the crew and 2 000 performers from more than 50 talented community-based groups have been designing floats, making costumes, synchronising moves and perfecting melodies. Join us on 21 March at 19:00 on the Green Point fan walk to experience creativity and talent. Get ready for your imagination to be taken by surprise. General access to the Carnival is completely free! Want a seat; purchase a bleacher-style terraced platform seat or the ultimate Cape Town Carnival hospitality experience. The parade will unfold through various themed pods of grouped dancers, floats and puppets showcasing “Incredible Journey: Sounds of South Africa”.
These include: Footsteps of the first artists - The oldest evidence of humans creating marks with meaning were found in Blombos Cave, South Africa. It’s proof that we’ve been a creative nation since the beginning of time. Our incredible journey begins by celebrating the world’s first artists which includes a giant eland sculpture inscribed with symbols and marks to suggest artistic expressions of the early Southern African peoples; sounds include a bow-harp, played by Glen Arendse of Khoi Konnexion, giving a feeling of being steeped in deep distant time. DANCE! Energy in motion – a celebration of South Africa’s dance styles which includes a group that kicks up dust through the distinctly South African Riel dance form, along with gumboot dancers; groups for this pod include ATKV Riel champions, and gumboot dancing by Phatizwelethu, Masizakhe, Masi Creative Hub and IthembaLabantu. Honouring our African cultural roots - we honour the incredible variety of African cultural traditions, identities and creative expressions. Each so unique and distinct, the float and the performance draws inspiration from isiZulu, isiXhosa, seSotho & Ndebele styles of dress, adornment, patterns, colours and shapes to construct a dramatic stage for this meeting of cultures.

l Hello Cape Town March 2020
The performers include Mali Drummers and Bulumko High School in Khayelitsha, combining traditional and contemporary dance and costume interpretation as well as lead performers Mxolisi Gontsana, Odwa Mangqibsa, Tyron Zoutman, Neziswa Tose and Ncumisa Shumi. Marabi Kwela: Sophiatown’s uniquely South African sounds and jive - Kwela and Marabi, emerged during the 1950s “Drum Era”, when traditional African sounds combined with jazz and the influence of visiting American musicians. First associated with township subculture, these styles later inspired musicians globally. At the Carnival, a giant Drum magazine will be brought to life, bursting with the energy of dancers in a ‘50s Saturday night beerhall; groups include Rainbow Academy, Cape Whalers Field Band Foundation and Kleinvlei Fitness Hub and lead performers Chante Wildeman, Mihlali Nomana, Unathi Makhambi and Zinedine Manus. Umswenko: Move to your own beat - A celebration of style and self-expression, Umswenko is a contemporary South African movement originally expressed by miners. Celebrating life beyond work through song, dance and impeccable style, this creativity brought people with different cultures and backgrounds together. The colourful, graphic float is reminiscent of township and urban environments with amaswank strutting their stuff. Let our performers from Strandfontein High, who are participating for the first time with John Nunkani, Uyanda Mchunu, Andrea Jacobs, Aphiwe Sodlamba and Bongani Mzizi dazzle you with their distinct style. Music of the soul – From doef doef to pata pata, hip hop to house: this year, more than ever before, we’ll look at the sounds that inspired our nation and beyond. Music that transcends race, religion, culture, space and time to bring people together around the world. A striking celebration of various musical styles and expressions through the parade will include Parkdale Malay choir. As well as current and classic music like, Miriam Makeba’s “Pata Pata”, Johnny Clegg’s evocative “Asimbonanga Mandela” and Vicky Sampson’s iconic “African Dream” and many more. Toyi Toyi: A call for change - There’s nowhere in the world where protest is synonymous with creativity and self-expression. The South African tradition of demonstrating through song, dance, music and movement is one of the strongest examples of the resounding proactive power of our people. A vocal and vigorous movement of strong energy and incredible toyi-toyi includes groups and performers KhuyaKhanya, Lavuthi Bhayi and Kraai4Art. One South Africa - South Africa is home to so many beautiful, diverse cultures and communities from around the world. Each so unique and distinct but all with passion for creativity, music and dance. At this year’s Carnival, the Chinese Community of Cape Town will share the joy of dragon dance; Jhoomkar Traditional Indian Dance group will perform to traditional gorba music; the Portuguese Community of Cape Town will delight with their distinctive ‘bailinho’ inspired performance; and the Aphrodite & Northern Lights group will bring the traditional Middle Eastern movements to life through belly dancing. Lisa Marias, Precious Morharinyane, Lesley Maasdorp and Byron Mckeith will join the groups to create a cultural extravaganza.
Voices of our women - Every year the Cape Town Carnival honours the women of our country and beyond. This year we celebrate the voices of women with the Iconic Dream Doll float as an incarnation of women as activists and social revolutionaries, the Vula Youth drummers and dancers, the URC dancers from Kraaifontein and the lead performers Celest Marinus, Busiswa Maliwa, Sihle Ngantweni, Yanick Sweers, Andrea Harry and Amber Gelderbloem will showcase their spirit. AfroFuture: explosion of creativity - African creativity and ingenuity are shaping the future we dream of right now. The grand finale of Carnival 2020 looks at what our bright and beautiful future holds. A spectacular float imagines the city of the tomorrow, fuelled by possibility, exploding with invention, all in its own unique, creative and distinctly African style. Performers include Tracey Carter singing live with AfriCAN contemporary dancers, bioRithm, Michelle Davids Dance Company, Heiderveld Theatre Company, Marunzo Thomas, William Adams, Freedom Malgas and Nico Kywe. 2020 EXHIBITIONS Two years after Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) relocated to its new premises at the Silo District of the V&A Waterfront, it became the talk of the international art scene for the unique architectural location and structure. Now, with a full and experienced curating team, fresh operational management and a firm agenda set for the future of this institution, members are all looking on constant highlighting and promoting African topics that resonates in the daily lives of people across the continent. The programme for 2020, a robust and exciting line-up, delves into the practices of artists, focuses on important narratives and critiques from across the continent and its diaspora with an emphasis on the individual voices of artists. Ranging in scale, the museum will present ambitious exhibitions that are accompanied by critical discourse, innovative public engagements and social events. The first exhibition opening of this year is from renowned Malian artist, Abdoulaye Konaté. Tandazani Dhlakama, Assistant Curator at Zeitz MOCAA said: “Konaté’s work has always engaged with many important socio-political and environmental issues. These range from global epidemics such as HIV/AIDS to freedom of expression, Islamic fundamentalism and political satire, to migration, music, language and spirituality.” Senzeni Marasela, Waiting for Gebane, 2015–16. Hello Cape Town March 2020
For Zeitz MOCAA, Konaté has created a site-specific, monumental new applique tapestry, Idéogrammes, signes, symboles et logos (hommage à Youssouf Tata Cissé et Germaine Dieterlen) which adorns the wall in the atrium. The work is an homage to two iconic thinkers who are distinguished for their immense contribution to culture.
In March, the museum welcomes Alfredo Jaar: The Rwanda Project. This captivating and critical exhibition turns attention to the Rwandan genocide in 1994, and the failures inherent in the representation of trauma. “The artist’s cutting critique towards the world’s indifference to these events at that time is palpable. The series of technical and poignant installations brings attention to news media, and the public’s voyeuristic gaze,” says Storm Janse Van Rensburg, Senior Curator at Zeitz MOCAA. Opening in May, a major retrospective of the work of Tracey Rose is presented, accompanied by an extensive monograph on her practice. This South African artist is a radical voice in the international art world. The exhibition, titled Shooting Down Babylon, foregrounds Rose’s uncompromising and cutting vision in works spanning from 1996 to the present. The exhibition encompasses film, sculpture, photography, performance, print, painting and multi-layered participatory elements, with the body and performativity being central to every aspect. For Rose, the body, often her own body, is a site for protest, outrage, resistance and pertinent discourse. It is a channel for the demonstration of exasperation, aggravation, disruption and paradox. At the end of the month of May, Zeitz MOCAA presents a long overdue institutional focus on the work of Senzeni Marasela. Through various mediums, including printmaking, drawing, performance, Marasela’s work unpacks history, memory, and personal narrative, emphasising historical gaps and overlooked figures. Inspired by, and in homage to her mother, Marasela has over the last sixteen years explored the role of black working women in South Africa, subjected to the devastating effects of migration, patriarchy, and apartheid. In September, Zeitz MOCAA presents the extraordinary and expansive installation Museum of Contemporary African Art (1996 – 2002) by Meschac Gaba, exhibited for the first time in its entirety on the continent. This twelveroomed work was conceived by the Beninese artist before an institution for contemporary African art and its diaspora existed in this context. Thus, the installation’s symbolic ‘return’ is a moment for celebration and reflection on the role of institutional practices on the continent. The installation is on loan from, and supported by the Tate Modern, London.

In October Zeitz MOCAA presents an exhibition by acclaimed South African artist Moshekwa Langa’s first institution exhibition in the country. The artist examines ideas around belonging and non-belonging, displacement and parallel accounts. Describing his own practice as a record of both sleeping and walking, this particular show will reflect on migration and the ebb and flow that makes up the human experience. The museum will simultaneously welcome a survey exhibition of the work of Johannes Phokela, one of Africa’s foremost painters. Paarl Main Road
THE NORTH SIDE OF PAARL The Main Street of Paarl is the equivalent of 8 miles (12.8km) and impossible to experience in one day. Locals call it the 8 Mile Route. The reason why this road is so long and straight is because it was used by wagons en route to the north via Bainskloof Pass. We have segmented it to show you what the northern side has to offer. RIDGEBACK WINES & GUEST HOUSE Located in the tranquil gardens and overlooking a dam populated with a range of exotic waterfowl, The Deck Restaurant offers delicious home-style cooking meals at Ridgeback Wines & Guest House. Music & Wine Pairing at Black Elephant vintners in Franschhoek Positioning themselves as the rebels of the vine, traditional wine and cheese pairings are not what you will find at Black Elephant Vintners. Instead, they offer a dexterously composed Music and Wine pairing. This novel approach to enhance the experience of the wine tasting process by utilising not only the senses of taste, touch, smell, and sight is what distinguishes Black Elephant Vintners from the others. This unique combination of sound and taste completely sets Black Elephant apart from other hospitality offerings in the Cape Winelands. Generally, they allow 2-3 hours for a tasting at the farm, but as there is no set agenda this can vary according to the extent of the conversation. They offer two different playlists/ tasting combinations that include Methode Cap Classiques (MCC’s), whites, rosÊ, reds and some special editions. MUSIC AND WINE PAIRING @ BLACK ELEPHANT VINTNERS are very interactive and hosted by one of the owners who shares our journey through the wine world. They are held most Fridays and Saturdays at 11:00. The cost is R350 per person but is used as a credit against purchases of R500 per person or more on wines etc. A discretionary donation of R50pp will be added for their charity, firstmiracle.org (should you not wish to participate it will be deducted it from your account). FIT FOR FLYING Over one billion people travel by air each year. From an array of plane-hopping pathogens to jet lag, dehydration, pre-existing medical conditions and the infamous economy class syndrome, international travellers confront an array of health risks while flying. In this article we shall discuss some healthy advice for travellers so you can be in tip-top condition, whether its for that special business trip, spending time with family and friends, or even that much-needed vacation we all need occasionally. Despite health risks involved, most of us are boarding planes more nowadays than ever before. World air travel has grown by around 5% a year over the past 30 years and although there are numerous health issues associated with air travel they pale in comparison to the enormous benefits to the traveller. There are many unstable cardiac conditions that prohibit one to fly, these include unstable arrythmias, valvular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and a recent stroke. The decrease in oxygen saturation during air travel may affect those with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it is important to make sure you have been seen by your general practioner or cardiologist prior to flying to ensure you are cleared and stable to fly. Patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators can fly once medically stable. Diabetes Mellitus has no restrictions to flying if its well-controlled. Those with insulin-dependent diabetes are normally required to have a letter of authorisation from their doctor to allow carriage of needles in their hand luggage. Insulin should be carried in a cool bag or pre-cooled vacuum flask. As a general rule: When travelling east and if more than two hours are lost, it may be necessary to take fewer units with intermediate or long-acting insulin. When travelling west and the day is extended by more than two hours, supplemental short-acting insulin or an increased dose of intermediate-acting insulin may be needed. Sugar tablets and snacks to prevent episodes of hypoglycaemia should be carried. The infamous Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism. The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. The best advice one can give to combat the risk is to wear compression stockings to stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling. Other important tips may include avoiding crossing your legs as this may reduce blood circulation and consuming adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Patients that are pregnant are prohibited to fly from the end of the 36th week of pregnancy and end of the 32nd week in multiple pregnancies, due to the increased risk of in-flight delivery. In general, the safest time for a pregnant woman to travel is during the second trimester (18-24 weeks). Babies less than 2 years old are also prohibited to fly. Lastly, let’s talk a bit about jetlag. Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when the body’s internal “clock” takes a while to adjust to the time at the destination. It can affect your mood, concentration, and mental and physical performance. It is generally not serious but can cause problems if you have critical business or vacation activities planned shortly after arrival. Also, try set your watch to the time zone of your destination before you depart and when you arrive at your destination, get into the local routine as soon as possible along with trying to stay outside during daylight as much as you can because natural light helps your body clock to adjust. Many of the world’s most fascinating destinations can only be reached on a long-distance flight. Sitting on a plane for so long can be intimidating, but you can take steps to improve your comfort and safety. Best wishes for safe and healthy travels! www.vascularcentre.co.za admin@vascularcentre.co.za Tel: 021 201 1119 Suite 1521 Christiaan Barnard Hospital
