‘NOT CONTENT WITH LAUNCHING ITSELF AS AN AMBITIOUS AND ALLURING NEW GALLERY TWO YEARS AGO, THE HEPWORTH WAKEFIELD HAS NOW OPENED AN IMPRESSIVE EXTENSION IN A FORMER TEXTILES MILL NEXT DOOR.’ Financial Times

This season we are delighted to have launched our brand new contemporary art space, The Calder, located on the ground floor of a historic 18th century mill next to the main gallery. Don’t miss the inaugural exhibition by Roger Hiorns on display until 3 November. We look forward to seeing you here. Simon Wallis, Director

GALLERY 1 HENRY MOORE: RECLINING FIGURES 8 OCTOBER 2013 – SPRING 2014 Henry Moore (born Castleford 1898) is known for his lifelong fascination with the human figure, a subject that allowed him to explore and experiment with different formal ideas in his sculpture. When he left Leeds School of Art in 1921 to study at the Royal College in London, Moore made weekly visits to the British Museum where he felt ‘like a starved man having Selfridges’ grocery department all to himself’. He familiarised himself with the ancient cultures of Africa, Egypt, Greece and Rome, but it was the figure of the Chac-Mool, a Pre-Columbian statue in the form of a reclining figure, in which he found most inspiration. This display features two works by Moore from the Wakefield Collection as well as major loans from The Henry Moore Foundation.

GALLERY 2 BARBARA HEPWORTH: TWO FORMS
PARALLEL OF LIFE AND ART
9 NOVEMBER 2013 – SPRING 2014
This collection display continues The Hepworth Wakefield’s exploration into developments in twentieth century British art and takes as its conceptual starting point the exhibition Parallel of Life and Art, staged by the Independent Group in 1953 at the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art), London.
This new collection display of Barbara Hepworth’s early sculpture explores her transition from figuration to abstraction. Starting with sculptures clearly representing the relationship between a mother and her child it traces the development of this motif into two separate forms. The display includes highlights from Wakefield’s collection such as Mother and Child, 1934 alongside loans from private lenders and the Pier Arts Centre, and the significant work Two Forms, 1936. It also features archival photographs of some of Hepworth’s sculptures of the period, including lost works and sculptures destroyed during the Second World War.

16 NOVEMBER 2013 – SPRING 2015
Conceived through collaboration between artists (Eduardo Paolozzi, Nigel Henderson), architects and critics (Peter and Alison Smithson, Reyner Banham) this ground-breaking and innovative exhibition juxtaposed a series of seemingly disparate images and emphasised the importance of photography, mass-produced imagery, architecture and design to avant-garde art.
The exhibition focuses on this shift in influence, highlighting the multiple sources selected for Parallel of Life and Art that point to a wider artistic field of vision and art-historical precedent. Art could now integrate the visual imagery of everyday life: the photograph, x-ray, microscopic image and the natural world. Alongside this was an acknowledgement of ‘other’ non-Western sources: the inclusion of ‘primitive’ objects, and reproductions of works by influential European and American artists such as Jackson Pollock, Jean Dubuffet, Paul Klee and Alberto Giacometti, whose work will also be included in this display. This exhibition also explores the significance of Parallel of Life and Art and its impact on the ideas and values that became intrinsic to the British Pop movement. The display at The Hepworth Wakefield will include sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and video by artists such as Magda Cordell, Richard Hamilton, Nigel Henderson, John McHale, Eduardo Paolozzi and William Turnbull.

GALLERY 4 & 5 THE HEPWORTH FAMILY GIFT The displays in Gallery 4 explore Hepworth’s studio environment, her working practice and the monumental commissions she undertook in the later years of her life. The tools and materials on display here were Hepworth’s own. Also featured is a step-by-step reconstruction of the bronzecasting process and four specially-commissioned films with footage of Hepworth in her studio. Gallery 4 introduces the Hepworth Family Gift, a unique collection of Hepworth’s surviving working models for her bronze sculptures, which are on permanent display in Gallery 5. The centrepiece of the Gift is the prototype for Winged Figure, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, commissioned by John Lewis for their flagship store on Oxford Street. At nearly six metres in height, this is the only full-size working model to survive of Hepworth’s monumental commissions.

GALLERY 6 BARBARA HEPWORTH: GRAPHIC WORKS
IN FOCUS: ALBERT WAINWRIGHT
A brilliant and gifted draftsman, Wainwright assimilated a wide range of influences from the decorative flourishes of art nouveau to the expressive intensity of the Viennese Secessionists. His illustrations strongly evoke the decadent and erotic drawings of Aubrey Beardsley and his watercolours call to mind the jewel-like colours and fluid lines of the Japanese ukiyo-e (Floating World) print-makers. Wainwright can be said to incorporate elements of all of these, and yet transform them into remarkable and original works with an intuitive feeling for line and stylised form all of their own.
The Hepworth Wakefield now holds the entire set of graphic works on paper by Barbara Hepworth, thanks to the Hepworth Family Gift made through the Art Fund and the generous support of the Friends of Wakefield Art Galleries and Museums. Gallery 6 will change during the exhibition period to show this entire body of remarkable work in its entirety. Hepworth made a number of print portfolios between 1969 and 1971. Many of these works, including a series called The Aegean Suite, 1971, make links between forms and sites associated with ancient Greek culture. Opposing Forms, 1970, however, takes inspiration from the sun and moon, the movement of the tides and passing seasons.
21 SEPTEMBER 2013 – 30 MARCH 2014 The Hepworth Wakefield is home to the largest public collection of the work of artist, illustrator and designer Albert Wainwright. Born in Castleford in 1898, Wainwright was a childhood friend of Henry Moore’s but achieved only a fraction of Moore’s acclaim during his lifetime. This new exhibition aims to shed light on this talented and neglected artist. Despite only living to the age of 45, Wainwright’s single-minded desire to capture his daily encounters with the people he met and places he visited led him to create a prolific body of work comprising thousands of watercolours and drawings, as well as painted ceramics, costume and set designs, and book illustrations.

Assembled by John Gott (1830 – 1906), Vicar of Leeds, the collection includes prints after Sir Francis Drake and J.M.W. Turner among others. This autumn/winter marks the first phase in a project to digitise the collection which will be available both online and in our Yorkshire in Pictures Gallery.

DANA SCHUTZ 12 OCTOBER 2013 – 26 JANUARY 2014 The Hepworth Wakefield is delighted to present the first UK solo exhibition of New York based painter Dana Schutz, featuring new work on show for the first time. Schutz is renowned for her riotously coloured figurative paintings and highly tactile approach, creating compelling and awkward imaginary worlds that explore hypothetical and sometimes absurd situations. Her paintings also offer pleasurable and provocative insights into contemporary life, the shared human realities of the body, social interaction and our often contradictory inner feelings. A new painting, Singer Songwriter, 2012, features in the exhibition and depicts a confident musician performing to a lone and seemingly self-conscious audience member. Dana describes the painting:
“I wanted to paint a situation that depicts practice and relates to the process of making a painting. I have been drawing, redrawing, wiping-out and rebuilding the painting as the paint is still wet. I really want each gesture to have its own space and quality and for the painting to have a certain speed – to feel as though it happened all at once.” Born in 1976 in Livonia, Michigan, Schutz currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Her most recent exhibition, Piano in the Rain, opened at Petzel Gallery, New York in May 2012 to critical acclaim. Schutz’s paintings can be seen in many international collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Museum of Contemporary Arts, Los Angeles, and Tel Aviv Museum, Israel. She is represented by Petzel, New York and Contemporary Fine Arts, Berlin. This exhibition will tour to Kestnergesellschaft, Hannover, Germany, in the summer of 2014. This autumn/winter we are delighted to have collaborated with Dana Schutz on a range of exclusive merchandise available in the shop.

MATTHEW DARBYSHIRE: THE W.A. ISMAY COLLECTION 12 OCTOBER 2013 – 26 JANUARY 2014 This exhibition brings together contemporary artist Matthew Darbyshire (born 1977, Cambridge, UK) with one of the world’s largest and most significant collections of post-war studio pottery, the W.A. Ismay Collection. Librarian and collector William Alfred Ismay (1910-2001) lived in Wakefield his whole life. From 1955 he began to collect pieces by some of the most renowned makers of studio pottery such as Hans Coper and Shoji Hamada, as well as works by local Yorkshire potters Barbara Cass and Joan Hotchin and lesser-known ceramicists. His extraordinary collection of 3,600 items by 500 makers covered all the available surfaces of his small terraced house in Wakefield.
Taking the architectural footprint of Ismay’s house, and examples of the collector’s domestic furniture and contemporary white goods, Darbyshire has represented 700 works from the W.A. Ismay Collection. The gallery space is the container for this uncanny installation that will combine the ‘ghost’ of a terraced house and its ceramic inhabitants alongside the diluted modernism of cheap, white consumer goods. By re-contextualising the collection, Darbyshire raises questions about issues of taste, fashion, availability and value in today’s consumer society. Matthew Darbyshire has also created a major new outdoor installation for The Hepworth Wakefield incorporating the 18th century watermill located in the gallery garden. Developed in partnership with York Museums Trust while York Art Gallery is closed until Easter 2015, during its £8 million major redevelopment project.
Don’t miss Matthew Darbyshire and York Art Gallery curator Helen Walsh in conversation Thursday 21 November at 7pm. £5 (£4). To book call 01924 247360
