Haroon MIRZA 25 May – 29 SEPTEMBER 2013 Haroon Mirza (b. 1977, London) is renowned for his multi-media works that bring together sound, image and found objects. Winner of the Northern Art Prize, 2010 and the Silver Lion Award at the 54th Venice Biennale, 2011 he has exhibited his assemblages to international acclaim. For this exhibition at The Hepworth Wakefield, Mirza has produced a new body of previously unseen work. In Gallery 1 there will be a display of key works from The Hepworth Wakefield’s collection, surrounded by bright auras of light. Shifting on and off, and around the objects, the lights will operate in sequence to form a visual composition that engages with ways in which these works are displayed.

Mirza will transmit the sound generated by these lights to Gallery 10 – what he calls the listening room – where the naturally occurring, but normally unheard, sound of electrical current will combine with the transmitted sound of the River Calder’s weir. A sculptural, hand-crafted antenna receives the signal from the weir, while silent light-works embedded into the walls replicate and reveal the physical structure of the gallery. Visitors are immersed in an extraordinary sensory experience that is at odds with the usual expectations of gallery exhibition where the silent, visual contemplation of a work is often the norm. Supported by The Henry Moore Foundation Haroon Mirza is represented by Lisson Gallery

GallerY 2 JAMES TISSOT This display looks at the representation of women in Victorian England: in particular the fashionable women of James Tissot’s society paintings and female workers in coal mines. These images are connected through their focus on costume and highlight the social and moral tensions in late Victorian society. Tissot’s On the Thames from Wakefield’s collection is the highlight of the display, alongside loans from Tate, Museums Sheffield and the National Coal Mining Museum of England. Take home some Tissot The Hepworth Wakefield Shop has created a range of new products from pocket mirrors to stationary. Shop in store or online www.hepworthwakefield.org/shop

GallerY 3 POST-WAR BRITISH SCULPTURE AND PAINTING This collection display features post-war British art and the younger generation of sculptors who represented Britain alongside Henry Moore at the 1952 Venice Biennale, including Kenneth Armitage, Reg Butler and Bernard Meadows. In their work the human figure is distorted to expose its vulnerability. At the same time, painters such as Frank Auerbach and David Bomberg expressed the physical and emotional body with thick layers of paint, whilst others such as Prunella Clough and Jack Smith portrayed ordinary domestic scenes. At the centre of this shift in British art was Francis Bacon, whose work embodied the post-war climate. Supported by The Henry Moore Foundation

FRANCES SPALDING TALK Renowned art historian Frances Spalding will give a talk in response to the post-war British art collection display. Weds 29 May, 7pm tickets £5 (£4) To book call 01924 247360.

GallerY 4 HEPWORTH AT WORK The displays in Gallery 4 explore Hepworth’s studio environment, her working practice and the monumental commissions she undertook in the later years of her life. The tools and materials on display here were Hepworth’s own. Also featured is a step-by-step reconstruction of the bronzecasting process, photographs of her works in progress and four specially commissioned films containing footage of Hepworth in her studio. This gallery introduces The Hepworth Family Gift, a unique collection of Hepworth’s surviving working models for her bronze sculptures, which are on permanent display in Gallery 5.

BARBARA HEPWORTH: THE PLASTERS A publication celebrating the generous gift to The Hepworth is available from the Shop at £19.95. Barbara Hepworth, The Plasters combines a full illustrated catalogue with detailed analysis of her working methods.

GallerY 5 THE HEPWORTH FAMILY GIFT

BARBARA HEPWORTH: GRAPHIC WORKS

Works from York Art Gallery: The Milner-White Collection

The Hepworth Family Gift is a remarkable collection of Hepworth’s surviving working models for her bronze sculptures. The collection reflects the ways in which Hepworth used plaster and aluminium in her work. She preferred to make prototypes on the same scale as the finished sculptures and worked directly on the majority of these models. The centrepiece of the Gift is the prototype for Winged Figure, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, commissioned by John Lewis for their flagship store on Oxford Street. At nearly six metres in height, this is the only full-size working model to survive of the monumental commissions Hepworth received in her later life.

The Hepworth Wakefield now holds the entire set of graphic works on paper by Barbara Hepworth, thanks to the Hepworth Family Gift made through the Art Fund and the generous support of the Friends of Wakefield Museums and Art Galleries. Gallery 6 will change during the exhibition period to show the entire body of this remarkable work.

During the refurbishment of York Art Gallery, Gallery 6 is showcasing works from the gallery’s Milner-White collection, including exceptional paintings by Stanley Spencer, Walter Sickert, Gwen John and John Piper among others.

The Gift was generously given by the Hepworth Family through the Art Fund.

Hepworth made a number of print portfolios between 1969 and 1971. Many of these works, including a series called The Aegean Suite, 1971, make links between forms and sites associated with ancient Greek culture. Opposing Forms, 1970, however, takes inspiration from the sun and moon, the movement of the tides and passing seasons.

This collection was gifted to York Art Gallery between 1948 -1963 by Eric Milner-White (1884-1963) who was made Dean of York in 1941. Philanthropic by nature, he used his expert knowledge of British art to make works accessible through gifts to public galleries. This exhibition has been made possible through the generosity of York Art Gallery, which is currently closed for a major development project, reopening in 2015.

Visit the Shop for a new and exclusive range of Hepworth graphic prints including New Moon, the final print acquired with the kind support of the Friends of Wakefield Museums and Galleries.

GALLERIES 7 – 9

Above: William Scott, Still LIfe with Candlestick, 1949 – 50, (detail). Right: William Scott, Still Life with Orange Note, 1970, (detail) Collection Ulster Museum, National Museums Northern Ireland. © 2013 estate of William Scott.

WILLIAM SCOTT 25 MAY – 29 SEPTEMBER 2013 Across a career spanning six decades, William Scott (1913 – 1989) produced an extraordinary body of work that has secured his reputation as one of the leading British painters of his generation. Exhibiting in America and Europe from the early 1950s, Scott is renowned for his powerful handling of paint in his exploration of still life, landscape and nude. Scott developed a unique language that pushed the boundaries of abstraction and figuration, leaving an influential legacy of work which mediates important developments in mid-twentieth century European and American painting. His work is often charged with a sensuality from his dynamic compositions as well as the vitality of his paint surfaces. Consequently the works have an enduring human quality that continues to be as fresh and relevant today as it was over fifty years ago.

This major retrospective exhibition, developed in collaboration with Tate St Ives and Ulster Museum, Belfast, marks the achievements of this internationally acclaimed modern painter in his centenary year and draws on collections across the UK and Ireland. SCOTT TALK AND FILM SCREENING On Thurs 18 July at 7pm, art historian and Scott expert, Sarah Whitfield will be in conversation with Chris Stephens, Lead Curator of Modern British Art at Tate. £5 (£4). Before the talk at 5pm, there will be a free screening of Every Picture Tells a Story, a touching biography of the life of William Scott, as told by his son, Academy Award-winning filmmaker James Scott. To book call 01924 247360. NEW BOOK AVAILABLE A new book on William Scott by Sarah Whitfield, and a major Catalogue Raisonné of the artist’s works in oil are now available in the Shop alongside exclusive merchandise.
