Welcome to The Hepworth Wakefield, one of the ‘top 50 galleries in the world’ (The Times) and one of the reasons why The New York Times stated that ‘Yorkshire has reaffirmed its position on the global arts map.’ Whether it’s enjoying a free tour of our unique collection of sculptures by Barbara Hepworth, being creative in one of our learning workshops or catching up with friends during an after-hours event, there is always something memorable to see and do at The Hepworth Wakefield. Towards the end of last year, Lonely Planet named Yorkshire as the third best region in the world to visit in 2014, citing the Tour de France Grand Départ and The Hepworth Wakefield as the top two reasons for the recommendation. See for yourself when we celebrate the world’s greatest cycling race with free, cycle-themed activities for the whole family and an inspiring exhibition in our Yorkshire in Pictures gallery.
‘ THE HEPWORTH WAKEFIELD IS GIVING LONDON A RUN FOR ITS MONEY.’ Lonely Planet
This summer, The Hepworth Wakefield dedicates its gallery spaces to a large-scale exhibition of Franz West, one of the most influential artists of recent years. Initiated and co-developed with great enthusiasm by West before his death in 2012, this exhibition will provide a highly anticipated major UK retrospective of West’s varied, playful and prolific work. As a registered charity, the gallery is reliant on the generous support of the public to contribute to realising our programme of ambitious events and exhibitions. In January we launched our first Annual Giving Campaign, to enable us to conserve, digitise, research and develop our art collection for everyone to experience and enjoy. Simon Wallis Director
The Hepworth Wakefield is a registered charity, no 1138117.

Franz West, Träumerei – Dreamy, 1997 © Generali Foundation Vienna / Werner Kaligofsky.
FRANZ WEST: WHERE IS MY EIGHT? 13 JUNE – 14 SEPT 2014 The Austrian artist Franz West (1947 – 2012) achieved worldwide fame with his Passstücke (Adaptives), furniture and sculptures for interior and exterior spaces. The focus of this loosely chronological exhibition is West’s combination pieces in which he combined various individual pieces and subsequently recombined them in different configurations. Due to this combination and recombination of different kinds of work including Adaptives, furniture, sculpture, videos and works on paper from different periods, the exhibition provides a highly anticipated major UK showing of West’s varied, influential and prolific practice. Franz West’s art is fundamentally participatory and seeks dialogue with its audience. His work offers various possibilities for experiencing the world with ever-changing results that depend on the audience, context and atmosphere. This can take place on a physical level – as with his
Adaptives, which are meant to ‘adapt’ to the body – but also on a conceptual level, found in his installations and works on paper. West’s work is unpretentious, light-footed, and humorous, but founded on an intense engagement with philosophical thought, an early concern that intensified throughout the artist’s life. The exhibition also investigates the connections and parallels between the work of Franz West and Barbara Hepworth. With a playful and striking intervention into the Hepworth Family Gift gallery, this exhibition places both artists’ work in conversation: the use of the democratic material of plaster; the significance of the studio environment; and the repeated return to reconfiguring and adapting previous work. ‘ HIS ART COULD BE ABSURD AND TOUCHING, WEIRD AND THREATENING – SOMETIMES ALL AT ONCE.’ The Guardian Where is my Eight? was conceived by mumok and developed in partnership with The Hepworth Wakefield. Supported by The Henry Moore Foundation, Crown Fine Art & Austrian Cultural Forum London.

MAKING A MODERN COLLECTION 5 JULY 2014 – SUMMER 2015 This changing display features some of the most significant works from the Wakefield Collection. The collection was founded in 1923 and began to develop with the help of Ernest Musgrave, the first director of Wakefield Art Gallery, and his forward-thinking collecting policy. Musgrave’s successors continued to expand the collection, which now has over 5,000 works, with the support of many organisations and individuals. Featuring work by Barbara Hepworth, L.S. Lowry, Henry Moore and F. E. McWilliam, this display celebrates the long history of collecting by the former Wakefield Art Gallery, which opened in 1934, up to the present day. PARALLEL OF LIFE AND ART UNTIL SPRING 2015 This collection display continues The Hepworth Wakefield’s exploration of developments in twentieth century British art and takes as its conceptual starting point the exhibition Parallel of Life and Art, staged by the Independent Group in 1953 at the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art), London. Conceived through collaboration between artists (Eduardo Paolozzi, Nigel Henderson), architects and critics (Peter and Alison Smithson, Reyner Banham) this ground-breaking and innovative exhibition juxtaposed a series of seemingly disparate images and emphasised the importance to avant-garde art of photography, mass-produced imagery, architecture and design.
The exhibition focuses on this shift in influence, highlighting the multiple sources selected for Parallel of Life and Art that point to a wider artistic field of vision and art-historical precedent. Art could now integrate the visual imagery of everyday life: photographs, x-rays, microscopic images and the natural world. Alongside this was an acknowledgement of other non-Western sources: the inclusion of ‘primitive’ objects, and reproductions of works by influential European and American artists such as Jackson Pollock, Jean Dubuffet, Paul Klee and Alberto Giacometti, whose work is also included in this display. This exhibition explores the significance of Parallel of Life and Art and its impact on the ideas and values that became intrinsic to the British Pop movement. It includes sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and video by artists such as Magda Cordell, Richard Hamilton, Nigel Henderson, John McHale, Eduardo Paolozzi and William Turnbull.

GALLERY 4 & 5 THE HEPWORTH FAMILY GIFT The displays in Gallery 4 explore Hepworth’s studio environment, her working practice and the monumental commissions she undertook in the later years of her life. The tools and materials on display here were Hepworth’s own. Also featured is a step-by-step reconstruction of the bronzecasting process and four specially-commissioned films with footage of Hepworth in her studio. Gallery 4 introduces the Hepworth Family Gift, a unique collection of Hepworth’s surviving working models for her bronze sculptures on permanent display in Gallery 5. The centrepiece of the Gift is the prototype for Winged Figure commissioned by John Lewis for their flagship store on Oxford Street. At nearly six metres in height, this is the only full-size working model of Hepworth’s monumental commissions to survive.

YORKSHIRE IN PICTURES THE GOTT COLLECTION 26 JULY 2014 – SPRING 2015 The Gott Collection, bound in ten large volumes, includes 1,200 images comprising watercolours, drawings and prints representing over 200 Yorkshire villages, towns and cities. This topographical collection includes works by artists such as John Buckler (1770 – 1851) and his son John Chessell Buckler (1793 – 1894), Joseph Halfpenny (1748 – 1811) and J. M. W. Turner (1775 – 1851) among many others. The Gott Collection was assembled in the 19th Century by John Gott (1830 – 1906), Vicar of Leeds and later Bishop of Truro, and his father William (1797 – 1863), a wool merchant. It was presented to Wakefield Art Gallery in 1930 by Frank Green, a Yorkshire industrialist and philanthropist.
The Gott Collection Conservation and Digitisation Project is supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
The Gott Collection is an important regional and national resource since many of the buildings, architectural remains and landscapes represented within its pages no longer exist. Until The Hepworth Wakefield opened in May 2011, the Gott Collection had largely been in storage. However, a conservation and digitisation project supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation has made it possible to display volumes from the collection in the Yorkshire in Pictures gallery and to make this unique historical, artistic and educational resource more accessible through an online catalogue on The Hepworth Wakefield website. View the Gott Collection online at gottcollection.hepworthwakefield.org Coming soon: The next phase of the digitisation project of the Gott Collection is to provide online access to it in the Yorkshire in Pictures gallery, where we will install touch-screens so visitors can explore these inspirational works.
