SPRING AT THE HEPWORTH
Photo: Hannah Webster
Welcome to The Hepworth Wakefield, one of the ‘top 50 galleries in the world’ (The Times) and a reason why Lonely Planet is recommending people visit Yorkshire in 2014. Whether it’s enjoying a free tour of our unique collection of sculptures by Barbara Hepworth, getting creative in one of our workshops, or catching up with friends in our Café Bar, there is always something to see and do at The Hepworth Wakefield.
‘ Together, Leeds [Art Gallery], [The Hepworth] Wakefield and the Sculpture Park offer an unparalleled and regularly renewed conspectus of modern and contemporary sculpture throughout the year. And Yorkshire has reaffirmed its position on the global arts map.’
Spring 2014 sees The Hepworth Wakefield present a career-spanning exhibition by American photographer Philip-Lorca diCorcia, the first time that photographs taken in the 1970s to the present day have been shown together in the UK. In conjunction with the diCorcia exhibition, we welcome British photographer Martin Parr to the gallery to discuss his work and contemporary photography. As a registered charity, the gallery is reliant on the generous support of the donors that contribute to our programme of ambitious events and exhibitions. This year we launch our first Annual Giving Campaign to enable us to care for and grow the collection for everyone to experience and enjoy. Simon Wallis Director

GALLERIES 1 & 2
GallerY 1 HENRY MOORE: RECLINING FIGURES until summer 2014 Henry Moore (born Castleford 1898) is known for his lifelong fascination with the human figure, a subject that allowed him to explore and experiment with different formal ideas in his sculpture. When he left Leeds School of Art in 1921 to study at the Royal College in London, Moore made weekly visits to the British Museum where he felt ‘like a starved man having Selfridges’ grocery department all to himself’. He familiarised himself with the ancient cultures of Africa, Egypt, Greece and Rome, but it was the figure of the Chac-Mool, a Pre-Columbian statue in the form of a reclining figure, in which he found most inspiration. This display features two works by Moore from the Wakefield collection as well as major loans from The Henry Moore Foundation.

GallerY 2 BARBARA HEPWORTH: TWO FORMS until summer 2014
This new collection display of Barbara Hepworth’s early sculpture explores her transition from figuration to abstraction. Starting with sculptures clearly representing the relationship between a mother and her child it traces the development of this motif into two separate forms. The display includes highlights from Wakefield’s collection such as Mother and Child, 1934 alongside loans from private lenders and the Pier Arts Centre, and the significant work Two Forms, 1936. It also features archival photographs of some of Hepworth’s sculptures of the period, including lost works and sculptures destroyed during the Second World War. PARALLEL OF LIFE and ART until spring 2015 This collection display continues The Hepworth Wakefield’s exploration of developments in twentieth century British art and takes as its conceptual starting point the exhibition Parallel of Life and Art, staged by the Independent Group in 1953 at the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art), London. Conceived through collaboration between artists (Eduardo Paolozzi, Nigel Henderson), architects and critics (Peter and Alison Smithson, Reyner Banham) this ground-breaking and innovative exhibition juxtaposed a series of seemingly disparate images and emphasised the importance to avant-garde art of photography, mass-produced imagery, architecture and design.
The exhibition focuses on this shift in influence, highlighting the multiple sources selected for Parallel of Life and Art that point to a wider artistic field of vision and art-historical precedent. Art could now integrate the visual imagery of everyday life: the photograph, x-ray, microscopic image and the natural world. Alongside this was an acknowledgement of ‘other’ non-Western sources: the inclusion of ‘primitive’ objects, and reproductions of works by influential European and American artists such as Jackson Pollock, Jean Dubuffet, Paul Klee and Alberto Giacometti, whose work is also included in this display. This exhibition also explores the significance of Parallel of Life and Art and its impact on the ideas and values that became intrinsic to the British Pop movement. It includes sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and video by artists such as Magda Cordell, Richard Hamilton, Nigel Henderson, John McHale, Eduardo Paolozzi and William Turnbull.

GallerY 4 & 5 THE HEPWORTH FAMILY GIFT The displays in Gallery 4 explore Hepworth’s studio environment, her working practice and the monumental commissions she undertook in the later years of her life. The tools and materials on display here were Hepworth’s own. Also featured is a step-by-step reconstruction of the bronzecasting process and four specially-commissioned films with footage of Hepworth in her studio. Gallery 4 introduces the Hepworth Family Gift, a unique collection of Hepworth’s surviving working models for her bronze sculptures that is on permanent display in Gallery 5. The centrepiece of the Gift is the prototype for Winged Figure, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, commissioned by John Lewis for their flagship store on Oxford Street. At nearly six metres in height, this is the only full-size working model of Hepworth’s monumental commissions to survive.

Albert Wainwright, Costume for a Dancer, 1930.
Albert Wainwright, Portrait of Peter Wilkinson, 1923.
In Focus: Albert Wainwright
A brilliant and gifted draftsman, Wainwright assimilated a wide range of influences from the decorative flourishes of art nouveau to the expressive intensity of the Viennese Secessionists. His illustrations strongly evoke the decadent and erotic drawings of Aubrey Beardsley and his watercolours call to mind the jewel-like colours and fluid lines of the Japanese ukiyo-e (Floating World) print-makers. Wainwright can be said to incorporate elements of all of these, and yet transform them into remarkable and original works with an intuitive feeling for line and stylised form all of their own.
21 September 2013 – 18 May 2014 The Hepworth Wakefield is home to the largest public collection of the work of artist, illustrator and designer Albert Wainwright. Born in Castleford in 1898, Wainwright was a childhood friend of Henry Moore’s but achieved only a fraction of Moore’s acclaim during his lifetime. This new exhibition aims to shed light on this talented and neglected artist. Despite only living to the age of 45, Wainwright’s single-minded desire to capture his daily encounters with the people he met and places he visited led him to create a prolific body of work. This comprised thousands of watercolours and drawings, as well as painted ceramics, costume and set designs, and book illustrations.

PHILIP-LORCA DICORCIA photographs 1975 – 2012 14 February – 1 June 2014 American artist Philip-Lorca diCorcia (b.1951, Connecticut, USA) is one of the most important photographers working today. This is the first UK exhibition to show works spanning his career, from photographs taken in the 1970s, including the Storybook Life (1975 – 99) series, to the ongoing project East of Eden. DiCorcia’s photographs of everyday life are actually meticulous arrangements staged to the last detail. In his work, realistic representation and the documentary gaze are subverted and rethought through his elaborate pictorial direction. This connects each series of his photographs. Although they are often set in real locations, the lighting, subject, position and objects within the photographs have been carefully planned in advance.
See page 10 for more information on our season of photography events, talks and workshops.
There are six series represented in the exhibition. Hustlers (1990 – 92) shows male prostitutes, each in a different, carefully staged setting. The evocative titles of each photograph give the name, age, hometown and the amount diCorcia paid each man for posing for the picture. The Streetwork series (1993 – 99) is of people caught unawares, photographed on the street, a theme developed in Heads (2000 – 01), where the images depict single figures that appear entirely withdrawn into themselves. In Lucky 13 (2004) – an American phrase that describes the warding off of a losing streak – dramatically lit pole-dancers are caught suspended in time and space. East of Eden (2008 – ongoing) draws loosely on narrative incidents from the Old Testament in stylistically different images. The exhibition also includes the series A Storybook Life (1975 – 99) presented here in its entirety of 76 photographs. Although there is no explicit narrative, people, family members and themes reoccur leaving the viewer to construct their own story. This exhibition is a touring partnership with Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt and Museum De Pont, Tilburg. With kind support from Sprüth Magers Berlin London and David Zwirner, New York/London.

Erika Vogt Speech Mesh – Drawn OFF
14 February – 6 April 2014 The Calder, The Hepworth Wakefield’s new 600sqm contemporary art space, presents the first solo exhibition in the UK by American artist Erika Vogt (b. 1974. New Jersey, USA).
Speech Mesh – Drawn OFF will bring a group of plaster sculptures, suspended across The Calder’s vast industrial space, in dialogue with her video works.
Vogt’s site-specific gallery installations are realised as dynamic image fields in which sculpture, film and video, photography, painting and drawing are interwoven. Drawing on her background in experimental filmmaking, Vogt’s installations unfold as cinematic environments in which the layered quality of her films is expanded into physical space.
The exhibition is co-commissioned with Triangle France, Marseille. www.hepworthwakefield.org/thecalder FREE ADMISSION
