‘ THE HEPWORTH WAKEFIELD IS GIVING LONDON A RUN FOR ITS MONEY.’ Lonely Planet

Welcome to ‘one of the top 50 galleries in the world’ (The Times). The Hepworth Wakefield is one of the largest contemporary art spaces outside London and it’s free. The gallery takes its name from the acclaimed sculptor, Barbara Hepworth, who was born in Wakefield in 1903, and houses a unique collection of sculptures by the artist. This spring we will be showcasing more of the artist’s work than ever before, with two new exhibitions dedicated to her life and work. From 6 February – 1 July we are delighted to present the UK’s first museum survey of work by Greek-American artist and feminist icon Lynda Benglis. This highly anticipated exhibition will be the largest presentation of Benglis’ work in the UK. As well as seeing inspiring exhibitions, this season you can inspire your creativity in one of our new learning courses, or catch up with friends and family at an after-hours music event. There’s plenty to see and do at The Hepworth Wakefield and we hope you enjoy your visit. Simon Wallis, Director

LYNDA BENGLIS 6 FEBRUARY – 1 JULY 2015 The Hepworth Wakefield presents the UK’s first major exhibition by Lynda Benglis (b. 1941), one of America’s most influential artists. Surveying her five-decade long career, the exhibition brings together over 60 works that present her extraordinary innovation with form, and ongoing experimentation with materials. Benglis came to prominence in the mid-1960s as part of a generation of artists challenging the traditional mediums of painting and sculpture. Working in the wake of Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism and Pop Art, Benglis sought new ways to create pictorial forms, most famously in her series of ‘fallen paintings’ made by pouring brightly coloured latex directly onto the floor. Echoing the fields of colour in the work of painters such as Jackson Pollock and Helen Frankenthaler, Benglis’ ‘pours’ took these gestures further still, liberating painting from both canvas and wall.

During the 1970s Benglis used video, photography and media interventions to examine the politics of representation and feminist discourses. In 1974 she published her infamous ‘advert’ in ArtForum magazine, depicting the artist in an overtly sexualised pose in a manner that challenged the misogynistic tradition of the ‘pin-up’ girl image. Over the last 40 years, Benglis has divided her time between homes and studios in New York, New Mexico, Ahmedabad in India and Kastelorizo in Greece. The exhibition will bring together works to explore the subtle influences these diverse locations have had on her practice: the early latex, wax and cast works created in New York; the importance of classical Greek sculpture and notions of value and beauty in her moulded ‘torsos’; a focus on materials such as paper and fabric in works made in India; and her ceramic sculptures in which Benglis draws on the colours and materiality of the New Mexico landscape. Supported by Cheim & Read, The Henry Moore Foundation and Thomas Dane Gallery.

GALLERIES 1 & 6

In 2015, The Hepworth Wakefield will present a duo of exhibitions to coincide with the major Barbara Hepworth retrospective at Tate Britain. The shows will look at Hepworth’s early and later years respectively, providing context to the emergence and legacy of one of the UK’s most famous artists.

HEPWORTH IN YORKSHIRE GALLERY 6 16 MAY – 6 SEPTEMBER 2015

Hepworth in Yorkshire will focus on Hepworth’s early years growing up in Wakefield, displaying archival material and work relating to her family and childhood. These will be accompanied by early drawings, paintings and sculpture that show Hepworth’s natural gifts in these areas. Newspaper articles and photography document her early successes and engagement with an academic figurative style that she would soon depart from to find her own artistic voice. Photographic images Hepworth took or commissioned of Yorkshire will be presented alongside these early works, reflecting her assertion that the experience of growing up in this area was hugely influential. The centrepiece of this display will be a portrait of Hepworth painted when she was 18 by noted artist Ethel Walker, who lived part-time in Robin Hood’s Bay. This work has been generously lent to The Hepworth Wakefield from a private collection, returning Hepworth to her birthplace.

A GREATER FREEDOM: HEPWORTH 1965 – 1975 GALLERY 1 18 APRIL 2015 – APRIL 2016 A Greater Freedom follows artistic developments in Hepworth’s later years, focusing on the last decade of the sculptor’s life from 1965 – 75. By this point Hepworth had achieved international recognition, representing Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1952, winning the Grand Prix at the Sao Paulo Biennial of 1959, and having Single Form commissioned for the United Nations in the early 1960s. These successes afforded her opportunities to explore new ideas and processes. Hepworth was extremely prolific during her later years, Tate Director Alan Bowness noting that nearly as many works were made during the 1960s as between 1925 and 1960. These later works show experimentation in new materials, working in bronze, slate and printmaking. In 1968 Hepworth noted, ‘while always remaining constant to my conviction about truth to material, I have found a greater freedom for myself’.’

THE HEPWORTH FAMILY GIFT PERMANENT DISPLAY

The displays in Gallery 4 explore Hepworth’s studio environment, her working practice and the monumental commissions she undertook in the later years of her life. The tools and materials on display here were Hepworth’s own. Also featured is a step-by-step reconstruction of the bronzecasting process and four specially commissioned films with footage of Hepworth in her studio. Gallery 4 introduces the Hepworth Family Gift, a unique collection of Hepworth’s surviving working models for her bronze sculptures on permanent display in Gallery 5. The centrepiece of the Gift is the prototype for Winged Figure commissioned by John Lewis for their flagship store on Oxford Street. At nearly six metres in height, this is the only full-size working model of Hepworth’s monumental commissions to survive. The Gift was generously given by the Hepworth Family through the Art Fund.

LAST CHANCE TO SEE

British artist Toby Ziegler (b. 1972, London) has a long-standing interest in making connections between digital technologies and art history. For this exhibition Ziegler has taken as his starting point the First World War plaster frieze, No Man’s Land, 1918 – 19 by renowned war memorial artist Charles Sargeant Jagger (1885 – 1934). This work grew out of his personal experience of Gallipoli and presents a stark portrayal of the field of war as a graveyard, with a look-out using his dead colleagues’ bodies for cover. Ziegler has created a three-part sculptural installation, echoing the composition of the frieze. No Man’s Land draws on Ziegler’s interrogation of explicit ‘war porn’ – photographs of casualties in war zones posted online. The dismembered limbs are abstracted using digital technologies. The 3D printer comments on the endless reproduction of images in the digital age, and produces a teapot ‘test-card’ created in 1975 by early computer graphics researcher Martin Newell. Toby Ziegler has produced a limited edition, Method Acting, 2014, exclusively for The Hepworth Wakefield. Edition of 20, £220 (members price £198). Call in, or visit hepworthwakefield.org/shop

This exhibition features some of the most significant works from Wakefield Council’s Permanent Art Collection, now held at The Hepworth Wakefield, charting the journey of the collection from its foundation in 1923. The collection now has over 5,000 works, through the support of many generous organisations and individuals. Featuring works by Lynn Chadwick, Barbara Hepworth, L.S. Lowry and Henry Moore, this exhibition celebrates the long history of collecting by the former Wakefield Art Gallery, which opened in 1934, up to the present day. It includes favourites from the collection and works that have not been previously displayed at The Hepworth Wakefield. New acquisitions highlight the gallery’s commitment to continuing to develop the collection, including works from The Eric and Jean Cass Gift, made via the Contemporary Art Society in 2012.

LAST CHANCE TO SEE

This collection display explores the impact of the seminal exhibition Parallel of Life and Art on the British Pop movement. Held at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London in 1953, the exhibition was organised by members of the Independent Group, a group of artists, architects and theorists who blurred the boundaries between high and low culture. They celebrated that art could now integrate the imagery of everyday life, from photographs and x-rays to microscopes and popular culture. Work by Jackson Pollock also features in this display alongside sculpture, painting, printmaking, film and photography by artists such as Magda Cordell, Richard Hamilton, Nigel Henderson and Eduardo Paolozzi.

LAST CHANCE TO SEE

The Gott Collection, bound in ten large volumes, includes 1,200 images comprising watercolours, drawings and prints representing over 200 Yorkshire villages, towns and cities. This topographical collection was assembled in the 19th century by William Gott (1797 – 1863), a wool merchant and his son John Gott (1830 – 1906), Vicar of Leeds and later Bishop of Truro. It was presented to Wakefield Art Gallery in 1930 by Frank Green (1861 – 1954) a Yorkshire industrialist and philanthropist. The Gott Collection is an invaluable record of the changes to the landscape of Yorkshire. The full collection can be accessed via the online catalogue and touch screens in the gallery.

PLASTERS: CASTS AND COPIES 2 MAY 2015 – APRIL 2016 This exhibition takes as its starting point the Hepworth Family Gift, the permanent display of Barbara Hepworth’s plasters and prototypes at the heart of the gallery. It brings together sculptures made over a period of three hundred years that all have in common a single material, the often over-looked medium of plaster. The role of the plaster cast in teaching artists will also be foregrounded in the exhibition. Drawing from plaster casts was an essential part of art school training, both in relation to the classical masterpieces but also as a way of learning about the anatomy of the body. The displays will explore the shifting status of plaster: from 18th – 19th century teaching casts of Greek and Roman classical sculpture, to use in the 20th century as a modern material prized for its ready availability, through to contemporary artists’ responses to the material. Important loans from the Royal Academy of Arts will be on display, including plaster casts of the classical works the Belvedere Torso and the Discobolus. Historic works such as these will highlight how casts were used before the invention of photography as a means of reproducing works of art for a wide international audience. By copying ancient statues, conventions of art-historical beauty could be shared with connoisseurs and with the uninitiated alike. These historic works will be placed in context with sculptures by contemporary artists including Nick Evans, Anthea Hamilton and Rebecca Warren, showing how artists have subverted ideas around ancient sculpture.

Unidentified Roman sculptor, Esquiline Venus (Original: Capitoline Museum, Rome) Cast by D. Brucciani & Co (London), 19th century ©Royal Academy of Arts, London.

Another aspect of the display explores the use of plaster by Hepworth and her colleagues in the first half of the 20th century. Featuring work by Jean Arp, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Ben Nicholson and Kurt Schwitters it will address the use of this medium, chosen for its cheapness, whiteness and portability. Supported by The Henry Moore Foundation.

SCULPTING THE LINE: BRITISH SCULPTORS AS PRINTMAKERS UNTIL 6 SEPTEMBER 2015

This exhibition explores the links between two forms of art-making: sculpture and print. Highlights include work by Modern British artists and their circle, such as Lynn Chadwick, Naum Gabo, Henry Gaudier-Breska, Barbara Hepworth, Gertrude Hermes and Henry Moore. Throughout the 20th century, sculptors have been drawn to the medium of print, often using printmaking processes to work on ideas that would eventually translate into sculpture. While the three-dimensional nature of sculpture may seem to be at odds with the two-dimensional surface of print, in fact, they share much in common. Printmaking can be described as a drawing process in three dimensions. This can involve incising lines into a metal plate to make an engraving, or gouging out a design in wood to produce a woodcut print. Printmaking has an obvious appeal for sculptors who are used to employing similar tools and methods when carving into wood, stone or other materials. Many of the prints in this exhibition were produced in the 1950s and 60s. This was a period of resurgence in artists’ printmaking with the opening of dedicated artist print studios, such as The Curwen Studio and Kelpra Studio, who worked closely with artists such as Hepworth, Moore and Paolozzi. Thanks to the work of these innovative artists and print studios, printmaking has now taken its place as a central part of many artists’ activity, celebrated both as a medium for creative expression and experimentation.

The newest addition to our collection, an early lithograph by Paolozzi titled Marine Composition, 1950, will also be on display in this exhibition for the first time, thanks to the generosity of the Friends of Wakefield Art Galleries and Museums.
