Our autumn/winter programme coincides with this year’s First World War commemorations and features three new solo exhibitions from Alexandra Bircken, Folkert de Jong and Toby Ziegler that consider themes of historical and contemporary conflict, man versus machine and our relationship to technology.

TOBY ZIEGLER/ CHARLES SARGEANT JAGGER: NO MAN’S LAND 1 OCTOBER 2014 – 22 MARCH 2015 British artist Toby Ziegler (b. 1972, London) has a long-standing interest in making connections between digital technologies and references drawn from art history. He exposes the changes that take place in the transformation from the virtual to the physical. For this exhibition Ziegler has taken as his starting point the WWI plaster frieze from Wakefield’s collection, No Man’s Land, 1918 – 19 by renowned war memorial artist Charles Sargeant Jagger (1885 – 1934). This work grew out of Jagger’s personal experience of Gallipoli and presents a stark, expressionist portrayal of the field of war as a graveyard, with a solitary figure of the look-out using his dead colleagues’ bodies for cover. ‘ ZIEGLER MAKES BEAUTIFUL, DISTURBING WORKS WHICH RAISE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS ABOUT EXPERIENCE AND CONSCIOUSNESS.’ This is Tomorrow

In creating a three-part sculptural installation, Ziegler echoes the composition of the frieze while drawing on its subject matter. No Man’s Land is supported by an aluminium framework, overlooking Ziegler’s sculpture of a human foot and a blank aluminium sheet, the latter acting as a visual foil to the intensity of Jagger’s imagery. This new commission draws on Ziegler’s interrogation of explicit ‘war porn’ – photographs of casualties in war zones posted online. The dismembered limbs are reconfigured and abstracted using digital technologies and the virtual models scaled-up to become sculpture made of cardboard. The final element of the installation comprises a 3D printer that will produce a Newell teapot within the gallery on a daily basis. Created in 1975 by early computer graphics researcher Martin Newell, this mathematical model serves as a test-card for reproducing a simple teapot and cites another instance of the potentially endless reproduction of images and objects in the digital age. Charles Sargeant Jagger, No Man’s Land, 1918 – 19.

This autumn we will be exhibiting an exceptional work from Wakefield Council’s Permanent Art Collection. Charles Sargeant Jagger’s plaster frieze, No Man’s Land, 1918 – 19, is the focus of a new exhibition by contemporary artist Toby Ziegler. Jagger’s realist sculpture was informed by his own experiences on the Western Front where he was wounded three times and awarded the Military Cross for bravery. The frieze depicts a harrowing representation of a lone lookout among the dead bodies of his comrades.

The frieze also includes an inscription taken from female war poet Beatrix Brice-Miller’s poem, To the Vanguard: ‘Oh little mighty Force that stood for England!/That, with your bodies for a living shield,/Guarded her slow awaking’, which is conspicuously absent from the finished bronze casts. Why this inscription was removed remains a mystery. It is possible that Jagger was advised about the potentially provocative use of the phrase and any controversy it might have caused. No Man’s Land entered the collection in 1936 following a memorial exhibition of the Yorkshireman’s work at the former Wakefield Art Gallery. The impact of the work was such that funds were raised for its acquisition from local corporations and individual subscriptions.

Featuring works by Lynn Chadwick, Barbara Hepworth, L.S. Lowry and Henry Moore, this exhibition celebrates the long history of collecting by the former Wakefield Art Gallery, which opened in 1934, up to the present day. It includes favourites from the collection and works that have not been previously displayed at The Hepworth Wakefield. New acquisitions highlight the gallery’s commitment to continuing to develop the collection, including works from The Eric and Jean Cass Gift, made via the Contemporary Art Society in 2012.

PARALLEL OF LIFE AND ART UNTIL SPRING 2015 The Hepworth Wakefield continues its focus on developments in twentieth century British art with this collection display that takes the seminal exhibition Parallel of Life and Art as its starting point. Held at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London in 1953, the exhibition was organised by members of the Independent Group, a group of artists, architects and theorists who were interested in blurring the boundaries between high and low culture. Instead of the then dominant art world of Paris, these artists looked to America for inspiration, working with references from popular culture such as comic books and mass-produced, often commercial, imagery. These were ideas and values that become intrinsic to the British Pop movement.

The display brings together works by artists involved in the Independent Group such as Magda Cordell, Richard Hamilton, Nigel Henderson, John McHale, Eduardo Paolozzi and William Turnbull, alongside iconic American artist Jackson Pollock and the graffiti-like work of Jean Dubuffet. The juxtaposition offers a view onto this shift in influence, highlighting the multiple sources selected for Parallel of Life and Art that point to a wider artistic field of vision.

GALLERY 4 & 5 THE HEPWORTH FAMILY GIFT The displays in Gallery 4 explore Hepworth’s studio environment, her working practice and the monumental commissions she undertook in the later years of her life. The tools and materials on display here were Hepworth’s own. Also featured is a step-by-step reconstruction of the bronzecasting process and four specially commissioned films with footage of Hepworth in her studio. Gallery 4 introduces the Hepworth Family Gift, a unique collection of Hepworth’s surviving working models for her bronze sculptures on permanent display in Gallery 5. The centrepiece of the Gift is the prototype for Winged Figure commissioned by John Lewis for their flagship store on Oxford Street. At nearly six metres in height, this is the only full-size working model of Hepworth’s monumental commissions to survive. The Gift was generously given by the Hepworth Family through the Art Fund.

THE GOTT COLLECTION UNTIL SPRING 2015 The Gott Collection, bound in ten large volumes, includes 1,200 images comprising watercolours, drawings and prints representing over 200 Yorkshire villages, towns and cities. This topographical collection was assembled in the 19th century by William Gott (1797 – 1863), a wool merchant and his son John Gott (1830 – 1906), Vicar of Leeds and later Bishop of Truro. It was presented to Wakefield Art Gallery in 1930 by Frank Green, a Yorkshire industrialist and philanthropist. The Gott Collection is an important regional and national resource since many of the buildings, architectural remains and landscapes represented within its pages no longer exist.

The Gott Collection Conservation and Digitisation Project is supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

Until The Hepworth Wakefield opened in May 2011, the Gott Collection had largely been in storage. However, a conservation and digitisation project supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation has made it possible to display volumes from the collection and to make this unique historical, artistic and educational resource more accessible through an online catalogue on The Hepworth Wakefield website and touchscreens in the Yorkshire in Pictures gallery. SCULPTING THE LINE: BRITISH SCULPTORS AS PRINTMAKERS 20 SEPTEMBER 2014 – 6 SEPTEMBER 2015

This exhibition explores the links between two forms of art-making: sculpture and print. Highlights include work by Modern British artists and their circle, such as Lynn Chadwick, Naum Gabo, Barbara Hepworth, Bernard Meadows, Henry Moore and Eduardo Paolozzi. Throughout the twentieth century, sculptors have been drawn to the medium of print often using printmaking processes to work on ideas that would eventually translate into sculpture.

While the three-dimensional nature of sculpture may seem to be at odds with the two-dimensional surface of print, in fact, they share much in common. Printmaking can be described as a drawing process in three dimensions. This can involve incising lines into a metal plate to make an engraving, or gouging out a design in wood to produce a woodcut print. Printmaking has an obvious appeal for sculptors who are used to employing similar tools and methods when carving into wood, stone or other materials. Many of the prints in this exhibition were produced in the 1950s and 60s. This was a period of resurgence in artists’ printmaking with the opening of dedicated artist print studios, such as The Curwen Studio and Kelpra Studio, who worked closely with artists such as Hepworth, Moore and Paolozzi to realise their artistic vision in print. The print was no longer accorded a lowly status as an art form or seen mainly as a means for reproduction. Thanks to the work of these innovative artists and print studios, printmaking has now taken its place as a central part of many artists’ activity, celebrated both as a medium for creative expression and experimentation. The newest addition to our collection, an early lithograph by Paolozzi titled Marine Composition, 1950, will also be on display in this exhibition for the first time, thanks to the generosity of the Friends of Wakefield Art Galleries and Museums.

For his new exhibition at The Hepworth Wakefield he has drawn on the collections of armour and contemporary weapons held by the Royal Armouries, the UK’s National Museum of Arms and Armour, in Leeds. In particular, De Jong has focused on two elements of the Royal Armouries’ collection: the personal armour of Henry VIII and contemporary modern firearms. These suits of armour, made at different points in Henry VIII’s life, demonstrate his changing body shape: from a lean, young man of twenty to a considerably larger, older statesman. In addition, De Jong has selected contemporary weapons from the collection, including machine and hand-guns. Both historical and contemporary objects have been reproduced using the latest threedimensional scanning process, reprinted as polystyrene figurations, reconfigured by the hand of the artist (degraded, added to, or altered in scale), before their final presentation in bronze. The finished bronzes are presented within an intense sculptural installation that includes a huge sandpit from which bronze sculptures emerge, an armada of bronze ships and coloured acrylic display cases containing polystyrene sculptures of Henry VIII and his wives. De Jong is interested in exploring the processes involved in bronze casting, drawing attention to how value attaches to the art object, firstly as the armour of a king, then as three-dimensional print made in cheap and disposable polystyrene and then finally cast in valuable bronze. ALEXANDRA BIRCKEN: ESKALATION 1 OCTOBER 2014 – 25 JANUARY 2015

In her first solo exhibition in a UK institution, German artist Alexandra Bircken presents a series of recent works that showcase a new approach in her practice, as well as a site-specific installation made for The Hepworth Wakefield. Through her latest work, Bircken engages with recurring concepts within twentieth century sculpture such as male verses female, and the handmade versus the mechanical. B.U.F.F, 2014, comprises four component works (Big, 2014; Ugly, 2014; Fat, 2014; Fellow, 2014), collectively referring to American B-52 bombers used by the United States Air Force from the 1950s. Made from wood, foam, plastic textiles and latex, the direct reference to weaponry and warfare is conversely sensualised through a textile ‘skin’, covering each component, coated in fabric and black latex.

In earlier works relating to motorbikes and cars, Bircken explores the formal properties of functional objects by repurposing them as sculptures, finding female forms in Mercedes’ gear sticks, or abstract shapes in used motorbike leathers. The new large-scale site-specific installation will interact with the geometric architecture of The Hepworth Wakefield, using ladders placed across the gallery space that recall Hepworth’s ‘stringed sculptures’. Adorned with figures reminiscent of deflated human bodies, this element continues Bircken’s interest in the fabric of skin: as clothing for the human body, a protective boundary, and, ultimately, a fragile surface. Expanded Narcissistic Envelope is a new installation by Toby Ziegler made in response to The Hepworth Wakefield’s new space, The Calder. The exhibition comprises a group of aluminium sculptures and a series of digital prints covering the walls and areas of the gallery floor. The installation is anchored by a painted floor grid that recalls the geometric visualisation of three-dimensional space in computer programming. Each of the sculptures is derived from an original source image taken from the internet, often of a body or body part, which Ziegler reconfigures and resizes into a new sculptural object. This immersive installation continues Ziegler’s interest in processes of translation: from image to sculpture, figuration to abstraction, from the virtual to the physical.

Several of the works have been conceived as pairs where one acts as a distorted mirror of the other, giving physical form to the conceptual processes of transformation that run through Ziegler’s practice. The wall and floor-based printed surfaces, which carry images enlarged to the point of distortion, further highlight Ziegler’s interest how our perception of the world is increasingly mediated by technology. Composers whose music will be performed include Gavin Bryars, Brian Dennis, Bryn Harris, Chris Hobbs, Michael Parsons and Hugh Shrapnel.
