ALICE CHANNER 16 FEBRUARY – 12 MAY 2013 Alice Channer (born 1977, Oxford, UK) is presenting a new body of figurative work created especially for The Hepworth Wakefield. Collectively entitled Invertebrates, the works are arranged as a long, low, horizontal spine that loosely takes its form from the horizontal, curving skeletons of snakes and other reptiles. Her work also takes inspiration from invertebrate jellyfish, squid and other deep-sea boneless life forms that have a recognizable form but are dependent on their aquatic environment to provide their body-shape and function. Through the modification of flat surfaces by pleating, curving, stretching and contracting, Channer explores sculptural properties of volume, dimension and weight. This is further developed through the play of materials in her works whereby solids will be used in their liquid or

‘invertebrate’ state. Stainless steel, silk, aluminium, perspex, bronze, elastic, marble, polyurethane resin and hi-tech lamé, are presented as liquids that clot, thin, coagulate, melt and solidify. Don’t miss all the artists from our spring exhibitions, Alice Channer, Jessica Jackson Hutchins and Linder in conversation on Thursday 21 March at 7pm. £5 (£4) To book call 01924 247360. GALLERIES 2 – 6

GALLERY 2 & 3 These new collection displays of post-war British art examine a shift in attitude towards making, as well as a radical new approach to the human body. At the Venice Biennale in 1952 eight young sculptors including Kenneth Armitage, Reg Butler and Bernard Meadows were chosen to represent Britain. This younger generation of artists preferred to work in metal to distort or elongate the human form, exposing its vulnerability. Similarly, for painters such as Frank Auerbach and David Bomberg, paint became a material with which to express the physical and emotional presence of the body, describing form through thick lumpy layers and paint-loaded brush strokes.

GALLERY 4 & 5 The displays in Gallery 4 explore Hepworth’s studio environment, her working practice and the monumental commissions she undertook in the later years of her life. The tools and materials on display here were Hepworth’s own. This gallery introduces The Hepworth Family Gift, a unique collection of Hepworth’s surviving working models for her bronze sculptures that are on permanent display in Gallery 5. The Gift was generously given by the Hepworth Family through the Art Fund.

GALLERY 6 The Hepworth and St Ives display looks at the development of British art when this Cornish fishing-village became an internationally significant centre for post-war artists. In May, the display highlights the prints Hepworth made in collaboration with the Curwen Studio. The Yorkshire in Pictures display highlights the architectural and landscape works in Wakefield’s collection, including the Gott Collection. In March, York Art Gallery’s Milner-White Collection will be featured in a display including works by William Etty, Walter Sickert and Gwen John.

LINDER 16 FEBRUARY – 12 MAY 2013 Linder (born 1954, Liverpool, UK) has been working with the principles of collage for over three decades: from her two-dimensional work on the late 1970s iconic Buzzcocks posters and record sleeves, to more recent collages presented in light-boxes. For her exhibition at The Hepworth Wakefield Linder will employ collage as twodimensional prints and three-dimensional lightbox sculptures. Drawing on Linder’s research into Barbara Hepworth the new works will combine images of ballerinas from the 1970s with natural forms; making reference to Hepworth’s love of dance, and her engagement with the landscape. The exhibition will culminate in a major new performance piece entitled The Ultimate Form that will present collage as a visual and sensory experience using choreography and music.

A free dance, music and fashion performance drawn from Linder’s research into Barbara Hepworth will take place on Saturday 11 May. This is a collaboration with Northern Ballet, choreographed by Kenneth Tindall, music by Stuart McCallum, costume by Pam Hogg and performed with Wakefield City Soul Club, South Asian Arts UK and others. An exclusive range of merchandise to support the exhibition will be available in the Shop, including artist prints, postcards and bone china mugs. JESSICA JACKSON HUTCHINS

American artist Jessica Jackson Hutchins (b. 1971, Chicago, USA) will be making her solo debut in a UK public gallery with this new body of work for The Hepworth Wakefield.

In addition several works bear large handmoulded ceramic vessels that mimic the human body’s weight, imperfections and frailty. Hutchins’ handmade ceramics and other highly tactile techniques make a direct link to Hepworth’s hard-won connection and freedom that she found eventually in using plaster as a material in which to sculpt.

Often taking found objects and discarded domestic items as a starting point for her sculptures, collages and prints, Hutchins transforms life into art, marrying the everyday with a wealth of universal references.

Together with her works within the gallery spaces, Hutchins has created an outdoor hanging sculpture to be installed in the trees of the gallery garden, adjacent to Barbara Hepworth’s The Family of Man, 1970.

At the centre of the exhibition are three impressively scaled canvas pieces using industrial metal ladders as both base and prop. Conceived as paintings within space, these ladders are draped with painted and collaged canvasses of sumptuous hues. With vulnerability as a key theme in Hutchins’ work, these half-paintings half-sculptures embody fragility as they expose the workings of their own construction.

These works will later tour to CentrePasquArt, Kunthaus Centre D’art, Biel, Switzerland in June 2013.
