GALLERY 2 & 3
This gallery introduces the sculpture of Barbara Hepworth in its variety. Over the course of her life she worked in different materials such as wood, stone and bronze. Her understanding of these elements allowed a sympathetic balance to be created between form and material.
These new collection displays look at post-war British art, examining a shift in attitude towards making, as well as a radical new approach to the human body.
Hepworth opened up her sculptural forms, eventually piercing through to create a hole. This relationship and play between the inside and the outside of a form was described using linking threads or coloured paint to draw the viewer in and through the work rather than simply around it.
At the Venice Biennale in 1952 eight young sculptors including Kenneth Armitage, Reg Butler and Bernard Meadows were chosen to represent Britain. This younger generation of artists preferred to work in metal to distort or elongate the human form, exposing its vulnerability. Similarly, for painters such as Frank Auerbach and David Bomberg, paint became a material with which to express the physical and emotional presence of the body, describing form through thick lumpy layers and paint-loaded brush strokes. These displays place works from the Wakefield Permanent Art Collection in a wider context, using loans from national collections at Tate, the Arts Council and private collections, and sculptures newly acquired through The Eric and Jean Cass Gift, donated through the Contemporary Art Society. Supported by The Henry Moore Foundation.

GALLERY 4 & 5 The displays in Gallery 4 explore Hepworth’s studio environment, her working practice and the monumental commissions she undertook in the later years of her life. The tools and materials on display here were Hepworth’s own. This gallery introduces The Hepworth Family Gift, a unique collection of Hepworth’s surviving working models for her bronze sculptures that are on permanent display in Gallery 5. The Gift was generously given by the Hepworth Family through the Art Fund. Photo: Hufton + Crow
GALLERY 6 Hepworth and St Ives looks at the combination of innovative artists and inspiring landscapes that led to the development of a particularly British abstraction and St Ives becoming an internationally significant centre for the development of post-war contemporary art. Yorkshire in Pictures is a space for changing displays highlighting Wakefield’s collection of architectural and landscape works including the Gott Collection, which comprises ten volumes of images of Yorkshire in the 18th and 19th centuries. Photo: Jerry Hardman-Jones
GALLERY GARDEN The Upper Mill is a commission by artist James Pyman, which takes the form of a wrap covering the early 19th century Grade II-listed watermill situated in the gallery’s grounds, adjacent to the historic Wakefield waterfront. Using a series of meticulously hand-drawn illustrations, Pyman captures the existing walls and features of the watermill and reproduces them on a giant scale, creating a three-dimensional drawing in the landscape. BARBARA HEPWORTH: THE HOSPITAL DRAWINGS 27 OCTOBER 2012 – 3 FEBRUARY 2013 This new exhibition reveals the remarkable series of exquisite drawings and paintings made by Hepworth during the late 1940s, illustrating surgeons at work in operating theatres in post-war Britain. Following the hospitalisation of their daughter Sarah in 1944, Hepworth and Ben Nicholson struck up a friendship with Norman Capener, the surgeon who treated Sarah at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Hospital in Exeter. Through this friendship, Hepworth was invited to witness a variety of surgical procedures at Exeter and the London Clinic. Between 1947 and 1949, Hepworth produced around 80 works, over 30 of which are on show as part of this new exhibition including the sketchbook she used in the operating theatres.
Hepworth was particularly fascinated by the rhythmic movement of hands during the procedures she witnessed. In a lecture given to an audience of surgeons in the early 1950s, she said: “There is, it seems to me, a close affinity between the work and approach both of physicians and surgeons, and painters and sculptors.” The hospital drawings series should also be viewed within the context of the launch of the NHS in 1948. This ground-breaking change within post-war society was embraced by artists like Hepworth, who supported the ideals behind the reconstruction of Britain to develop a fairer, more inclusive society. A range of new products accompanies the exhibition, including a new publication illustrating all known hospital drawings and paintings by the artist. Available from the shop at £16.99 (Members’ price £13.59). A Mascalls Gallery exhibition curated by Nathaniel Hepburn.

TO HOPE, TO TREMBLE, TO LIVE: MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY WORKS FROM THE DAVID ROBERTS COLLECTION 27 OCTOBER 2012 – 3 FEBRUARY 2013 Acquired from the mid-90s onwards, the David Roberts Collection, comprising 2000 works by 600 British and international artists, is one of the UK’s most significant private collections of modern and contemporary art. Taking as its starting point a work by 19th century sculptor Jules Dalou, an apparent anomaly within the Collection, this exhibition examines ways in which modern and contemporary artists represent the human body in various media to convey aspects of psychological and emotional life. Born in 1838, Dalou was famed for his ability to communicate subtle representations of his subjects rather than simply following a realist ideal.
The human head is a particular motif of the exhibition, which has resonance with the current display of post-war British sculpture and painting in galleries 2 and 3. Work by Huma Bhabha, Louise Bourgeois, Tony Cragg, Lucian Freud, Thomas Houseago, Eduardo Paolozzi and Rebecca Warren are among 30 outstanding pieces selected by The Hepworth Wakefield. Don’t miss the ‘I Collect’ event on Sat 17 and Sun 18 Nov, which will invite visitors to share their own collections with the gallery’s online audiences and visitors, and our panel discussion on Thurs 17 Jan, 7 – 8pm ‘So you want to become an art collector?’ which will examine the state of British art collecting. See page 12, or visit hepworthwakefield.org/whatson for more information.
