Watch What You Say by James Bridges HERBAGE MAGAZINE

According to the Domestic Violence Homicide in Oklahoma 2020 annual report by County from 1998 to 2019, 1,881 victims lost their lives to domestic violence in Oklahoma. The World Health Organization estimates that roughly 55% of domestic abuse perpetrators were drinking alcohol prior to assault. There were three of these events in 2019 that also involved the death of children. These three events resulted in the death of five children. Every month in the U.S., 50 women are shot and killed by intimate partners. According to a new study, cannabis has drastically reduced the number of... This is the terminology that people who are uneducated yet interested in the positive outcomes of cannabis like to see and read. It has very little to do with the overall picture. Many standards, including mine, would indicate that this could be one of the most ignorant ways of describing a medicinal plant to a group of people who just want to be ok with it. This is our opportunity. Our chance. We are at the forefront of an industry and a lifestyle in which we, us, not the man behind the curtain, can capitolize. We truly have the opportunity to properly educate ourselves. The overall effects of cannabis are not defined by explosive actions of those who may or may not be directly under the influence of said cannabis. It’s proposterous to think that you could accurately depict or even guage how abusive someone would be if they just simply made a switch. Though it is quite remarkable to witness those that switch from alcohol stop seeing that “red” violent light. The medicinal value of cannibis is devalued so greatly when it’s put into a sample jar such as this. Though, I can find satisfaction knowing that in the end the plant will always win. I’m just not certain that “by any means” is actually necssary to make a point when it’s blatenly staring you in the face. There is a time and place to make noise. That time is usually when those that you want to listen cram more mud

into their ears. If you wait long enough, continue the mission, believe in what you are trying to accomplish, and most of all be empeccable with your words, (specially those words which fall into the ears of those whom believe themselves to be of a higher educational level than most), Good will prevail. Good will prevail. Good will prevail.

You Twitchy Witch by James Bridges HERBAGE MAGAZINE Pencils are very cheap. You could probably find a few under your stash box right now. Paper’s not so bad either. So when you put the two together and you tell someone they can draw and they scribble something down, that doesn’t make them the next Keith Haring. It’s the same with every art form. The cream rises and it’s better damnit. It’s just better... Catie Hubbert was enrolled at Oklahoma State University with the full intention of becoming something that society had told her she would probably need in order to make it. By happenstance she enrolled into her first “formal” art instruction. That’s when she found love in the form of art. She walked away from that Aggie school with a bonafide BFA and now it’s time to do Catie the way Catie wants to do Catie. “It’s a really wonderful and fulfilling place to be. It’s hard to make it in the art world and make a name for yourself to the point where people recognize your work or come to you requesting a piece. It’s a really cool thing to experience.” Catie’s eyes were wide open. I called Catie a few days before meeting with her. I noticed something inside of her artwork that made me stop. I wanted to know more about the person that created this brilliant combination of color and design. I noticed a touch of magic and design that not many have the talent to match. I asked her what she attributed to her beginning success. “I think a lot of it is forcing myself to be uncomfortable. I put myself out there consistently now. I’m naturally a very shy person. I’m very awkward. I kind of made a pact with myself a couple years ago to do all of the things that I’m afraid of doing, all of the things that make me uncomfortable. So one of those things is music. Putting that out there for the world to see.. That’s been a huge milestone every time I post a video or something like that. It works the same with my art. I just consistently put my work out there without tearing myself down or telling myself that this isn’t good enough. I try not to worry if others are better. Just getting past that and sitting in that discomfort for a little while..It’s really paid off because people see my work now and it gets recognized.” Living and working around artists myself, I recognize when they go under the influence of wondering whether people like them as people, or they really enjoy their work. It’s a hard spot. I asked Catie if she had had her turn with that emotion.

“I like creating work for strangers and I am to the point now, like I said, where I will have strangers come to me and ask for art. When it’s people that you know it’s kind of difficult and there is a little voice in my head that always says they’re just doing me a favor or they’re just doing this because they want to support me. Without having people other than friends and family coming to you requesting work, it’s really easy to let that voice win. You just have to continue with your craft without listening to that voice. You must consistently do the best you can. And people either take it or leave it.” Catie reassured me that she is on the correct path, which is her path.

to buy the proper equipment. I’d like to get heavily into animation once I can buy all the software. I want to transition over and see what happens.” “I have a lot of health issues. I have had some neurological issues. You’ll notice I twitch. I’ve had that since I was little. It’s because I have a severe OCD. I get overwhelmed and it comes out in twitches. In college I got very sick and was hospitalized. I was diagnosed with lupus and I was on all the medicines for all the years and just felt miserable. I felt like there was no room to be me because all of my energy was consumed by just being sick.”

An artist can feel the fire of other people actually liking their work. They of course get a little bit of a boost. A personal boost that says I can do this. I most certainly can and that, my friends, is a wonderful feeling. To accomplish this as an artist without it actually being a popularity contest is rare and it is something that Catie is forever grateful for.

“Then I found cannabis and replaced all my medicines. I started microdosing and building my way up and it was just like the whole world opened up to me because I didn’t have to worry about all that other stuff. I could just be Catie. It’s just been so life-changing and my journey into self-discovery owes so much to cannabis. It played a major part in me learning to love myself and having space to finally become my best self. There’s no way I would be where “It’s hard to build a name for yourself in the art world. It I am without it. I would still be miserable and missing out is very, very intimidating especially for someone who’s re- on life. I would be watching it go by feeling like I can’t do ally bashful. Oh gosh I’ve been doing this full time for so all those things I want to do. So I feel like it would be a long. For about nine years. I’m just now to the point where mistake if I did not thank cannabis itself.” people are starting to recognize my work. So it takes a lot of bad art to get to the good. But art is about finding out “It’s because of cannabis I was able to see all the shit in my who you are as a person and letting that shine through on life that doesn’t matter and toss it away. I learned that life the canvas. People are going to recognize you and they see is about connection and love and seeing the beauty in all your voice and your personality in each piece. So they can the things. All the stuff that I was worried about and all go hand-in-hand. Figuring out who you are or what your the things that continuously made me miserable..I learned style is, what your taste is, what is your signature thing. that at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter. All of the anxiSelf-discovery. I think it’s all a very big important part of ety, all of the fear. It was just stopping me from showing all success. I really do think they go hand-in-hand.” the colors that are inside of me.”. “I did hyper-realistic portraits. Paintings that look just like the person. I did that for the longest time. Not really because I ever advertised it or wanted to do it. Someone just asked me once because a loved one had passed away and they wanted a commemorative piece. It turns out I was really good at it. More people started asking so I did that for a long time. Finally I got to a financial place where I felt like I could do what I wanted and paint in my own style rather than, you know, commissions and specialty pieces that people wanted. So I started painting this show called Oklahome-Sweet-Home. It’s kind of a mix of mysticism and Oklahoma landscapes and whimsical things. It’s the world that I live in. I see it in Technicolor and there are so many beautiful things that we miss every day right here in Oklahoma.

When I say things similar to Catie or I listen to others say them, I imagine angry, foolish, bad people that once had control now crumbling because they are pissed off that it doesn’t matter any longer. A smile rises every time. The green wave is real and will never subside. At least I hope it doesn’t while I’m still around. It’s people with vision and the ability to step away from the norm that will keep it flowing.

“It’s a full out of body thing you need to experience in order to heal. I think you have to look at it as ‘everything is connected’ and you can’t just heal the physical and get better. You need to heal your emotions. You need to heal your soul, your mind, your body, all of it. And cannabis can reach all of those components. It’s like it reaches across barriers and can pull out what you need to see and show The collection has gotten a lot of attention. I’ve had peo- you the areas where you need to do some work” ple reach out and put my buffalo paintings on t-shirts. I sold a lot of those. Aside from a boot on her left foot from a recent broken bone, Hilary would appear to have led a fairly simple and healthy life, however her journey with health has been far from easy. After her accident in 2006, a doctor in Austin managed to save her leg, but her journey to recovery had only just begun. “It took me nine months to be able to walk again,” Hilary told me. I could see that telling this part of her story was difficult for her, but she continued anyway, “I developed a nerve disease in my leg which is called RSD: Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome, also referred to as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. That led to a lot of problems.”

“In a very small set of people,” she continued, “RSD can spread. Since I had other health issues at the time, I was just the perfect specimen for everything to go wrong, and everything did. I just spiraled downhill from there. It moved into the whole right side of my body.”

I drove out to Norman, Oklahoma this month to meet with Hilary, Head of Sales, and her husband Mike Campbell, Co-Owner of Star 46 Farms. Newlyweds of just 6 months, Mike and Hilary have built this indoor and outdoor operation from the ground up, with patient advocacy and education at the forefront of their mission. “We saw the benefits it provided for me and my family,” Hilary told me. “We just felt so strongly about helping other people and saw so many people that were going down the road that I was on.”

After investing years into research over her health issues, Hilary was beginning to understand that the medications she had been prescribed were just masking the side effects of other medications in a seemingly never-ending cycle. Quickly losing faith in her physicians, she knew that she needed to get off the slew of pharmaceuticals her doctors had placed her on.

“Obviously there is a place for medication,” she stated carefully, ensuring that she wasn’t sending the wrong message. “When we started this,” Hilary began as she welcomed me “We all need medication and pharmaceuticals, but I think into their facility, “this was an arena for horses. It is not just about THC. Too many people do not understand that. It’s frustrating that so many people think it is just about getting high.” “During harvest last October,” Mike chimed in, “we had a couple of strains that were at least 28% THC, and around 3% terpenes. “Oklahoma’s BEST Kept Cannabis Secret”

I love her by James Bridges HERBAGE MAGAZINE When I was very young I would travel a lot with my grandparents. To this day I can still smell the morning dew on the ground as I head to the showers. I loved it. We did a ton of connecting with nature and learning about things. I never really knew I wanted to learn about them. I was twelve. Let’s face it. I had no idea… I was never really afraid of snakes during those travels. Spiders were another thing. I was and am still frightened by the mere thought of a spider on me. So much so that as a child I was convinced that if I joined the “National Spider Sniffing Club” and vowed to never kill a spider they would leave me alone. Hold on a sec. I see a spider in my peripheral vision as I write this. There… Squashed. Anywho… Where was I? Oh yes. Snakes. I may have never really been afraid of snakes, but I never even dreamed of laying down next to one. As of late I have found myself in too much of a rush to smell the flowers on the way. We can all get there at times. It’s called “autopilot” mode. I needed to slow down. So naturally I visited one of my local favorite spots to discuss this very significant matter, Local Leaf RX in Tecumseh, OK. Leah, look for the badass chick in charge, down at Local Leaf RX suggested I try the Black Mamba. “You wanna slow down baby? Take this home.” I can’t resist a smile like that. Especially when it has weed with it. So I did what she said. That is if my home were the riverside that is roughly less than a stone’s throw away from the purchase. Zip, zip… It has been a long weekend of fun in the rain and a ton of deadlines have been broken. I was contacted by people I didn’t need in my life any longer. I had a bill collector mistake me for someone else and then argue with me that I am in fact the person he is looking for. I was beginning to have some issues with my car. Life shit. Fake life shit. The screw was turning and turning. Here we go. As I greeted the snake into my realm I forgot about those things which bothered me. I noticed a hug. Was it my imagination? The scales were shiny and looked hardened. Surprisingly they felt like pillows. The sweet scent of her tongue was too powerful to resist as she looked me in the eyes. I asked her if she had been dipped in grapes as I tasted the strong purple pouring into my lungs. She was beautiful and I was in love. I’ve been in this situation before. This time I’m not looking away. I’m not going to find something to pick me back up. I’m going to lay here with this wonderful black snake as long as I possibly can and drift...off...to...sleep. The Black Mamba strain grown by Local Leaf Cultivation is my Strain of the month for July.

Write that ish down. by Anna Ervin HERBAGE MAGAZINE

I have not managed to live in one place for over a year. I have moved from apartment to apartment, sometimes from state-to-state, every year in the last decade. I get tired of frequently packing up my life, but I think the constant change in environment actually excites and motivates me to keep working towards new lessons and experiences in life, abundance, and love. I am moving again this summer, and as I have been going through my belongings, I found an old journal where I jotted down a few of my goals and dreams. When I read through the list, I realized I could check off nearly everything I had written down just years before. I have always believed that words are powerful, but something about seeing my own writing on paper gave me chills. I still remember how silly I felt as I scribbled the words “move to Denver,” and “host a wellness retreat” into my notebook. Back then, those goals were so far from manifesting that I couldn’t imagine what it would feel like to achieve them. That didn’t stop me from trying. I used to spend hours daydreaming about being surrounded by mountains or sharing divinatory practices with a tribe of likeminded women. I knew at that time that I was not yet prepared for these goals to come to fruition, but I also knew that if I told myself they would happen, I would eventually trick my brain into believing it. This reminds me of a quote by the late president of Bi-Lo supermarkets, Frank Outlaw: “Watch your thoughts, they become words; watch your words, they become actions; watch your actions, they become habits; watch your habits, they become character; watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.” Our thoughts are powerful, but our words carry even more weight, further influencing our actions, character, and sometimes even our fate. So what happens when we apply those words to paper? Or when we practice visualizing the process of our dreams becoming reality? Practicing mindfulness with my thoughts, and speaking with intention I can alter the way I perceive and even experience reality. To me, this is the essence of manifestation. Abundance, success, love, or whatever you’re trying to manifest won’t just magically poof into your life (although if you’re not paying attention, it can sometimes feel this way). They slowly creep in through your thoughts, words, and actions as you shift your habits to match their frequency. If I’m trying to manifest love, I’m going to focus on love – write about it, envision what it feels like, act the way someone in love would act, then let it go and trust that

the universe will deliver. Eventually, the universe is going to become aware of my intentions and efforts to attract love into my life, and therefore love will work its way into my world. I know this is easier said than done, and I do feel that it’s important to be mindful of intention when working with words. To close, I wanted to share three helpful exercises that I tend to lean into when I’m ready to start manifesting healthy changes in my own life: Start a Vision Journal I like to write about my biggest dreams, the goals I’ve always wanted to work towards, the cities I want to live in, and the type of home I hope to keep. Sometimes I can be very descriptive, other times I’m a little more vague, focusing more on manifesting things that are simply in my best interest, rather than specific things with many expectations. I write about them as if they have already come to fruition: “I live in the house of my dreams,” or “My career is fulfilling and rewarding.” Write the Universe a Love Letter In my opinion, the best way to manifest the things I want is to practice gratitude for all that I’ve already been blessed with, and the universe gives me an insane amount to be thankful for. “Dear God, Angels, Spirit Guides, Universe, Thank you for nurturing and providing me with everything I need to be healthy and happy. I am so in love with your sunshine, and the way it breathes life and energy into me. I’m thankful for the soil that keeps me grounded and provides nutrients to sustain my body…” Switching my mindset into one of immense gratitude and love, as well as recognizing the divine forces of nature that always have my back, helps me draw more of that energy into my reality. Draw Out a Plan When I first thought about hosting a wellness retreat, I never imagined it would actually happen, but I made a list of the menu items I would provide regardless. I even went as far writing out an entire meal prep schedule to feed 10 people just to show myself I could. When I actually did host the retreat years later, my menu looked a lot different, but I already knew exactly how to work out all of the little details. Even though I had simply written my plans down for fun, I think the exercise shifted my thought process from “I wish I could do something like this,” to “I am absolutely capable of pulling this off.” You have so much magic that lives inside of you. I hope you can see it.

Sowing The Seed by Chet Tucker

Now that you’ve completed your wet/dry trim, we’re down to the final stage of the growing process. Before your flower heads to market, the goal is to properly cure your flower. It’s important that the cannabis not dry or cure too quickly as the plant is still producing The THC should continue to catalyze during the process for peak results. On the flip side of the coin, you don’t want your flower to cure too slowly and increase chances for fungal germination. Properly cured cannabis can last for several years so let’s take a peek at some common best practices. We’re at the stage of retaining as much of the terpenes as possible by properly caring for your flower. Keeping a room temperature at 60 degrees is common and allows the plant to remain below temperatures that can sway the volatile of the curing process. Next, you want your relative humidity (RH) to remain consistent at around 50%. You don’t want it too dry because we want to optimize the accumulation of THC during the post-harvest timeline. Most will dry cure for a week to 10 days but it’s ideal to stretch a bit longer if you can manage the monetary turn times necessary to keep your productivity rolling.

You’ll know that it’s fully cured when the stems snap and the bud has a bit of a “crunch” to it and many master growers won’t cure less than 6-8 weeks. Whether you use steel, glass, or plastic tubs, your buds will need to be “burped”. In the early stages, you’ll want to burp a few times a day, giving them enough oxygen to aid in the sugar metabolization. After the first several days, moving to every 24-28 hours during the curing timeline is adequate. You want to give them some oxygen by opening the container fully and gently moving/shaking the buds around. Once you’ve reached the desirable results, it’s time to pack and label your flower for market! There are many different bags that you can use but ensure that you’re not going on the cheap with bags that won’t stay properly sealed during the time frame that you’re shopping your flower for sale. Note: It’s critical that the flower is tested and passes all required labs before it’s taken to market. Finally, some good practices for moving your flower is to ensure you are being transparent with your retail dispensaries. Have your full labs on hand and share what process you used to grow, trim, and cure your flower. A website and social media will strengthen your validity and confidence in the marketplace. Dispensaries and consumers like to know where their flower is coming from and having transparent methods for communicating your flower is ideal. If you are new to the marketplace, start local and expand from there. If you prefer to stick tot he growing and let someone else peddle your end product, you have a few options. You can look to hire someone for a fee or percentage per pound or find a wholesale broker/processor to partner with to either display at a fixed market location for incoming dispensary buyers and/or they’ll work their existing buyer base and expand beyond them to get your flower to market. Be proud of your results but never too proud to outpace the end quality. Get a few professional opinions and flow with the season of the market. Keep your patience and consistent growing process in line and strive to keep strong genetics and a trustworthy brand/name. Next month we’ll dive into other methods of processing your flower and conclude the Sowing the Seed series. We’ll catch you next month!

4 Medicated Chocolates for Every Type of Consumer by Anna Ervin Anyone who knows me can tell you how much I love edibles. They might also tell you how much of a lightweight I am when it comes to cannabis. Let me just paint a picture for you: a 2mg gummy is a good starting point for me, 5 is typically a comfortable dose, 10 will give me the giggles and a strong urge to procrastinate, while anything beyond 20 might just put me to sleep. I’m sure you can imagine how daunting of a task it was to write this article, however, I’m a foodie. So anytime I’m presented with the opportunity to eat a bunch of medicated chocolate and call that “work,” I’m not about to back down from the challenge. I know there are many different types of cannabis consumers out there, so I tried to include a variety of different types of infused chocolates. Whether you’re looking for flavor, dosage, or quality ingredients there’s something for everyone on this list… Unless you don’t like chocolate, an atrocity that I may or may not judge you for. Because I chose such a broad variety of products, I decided to organize them into five categories: best overall flavor, full-spectrum product, high dosage, and low dosage. Supporting local businesses is important to me, so each of the brands I selected are 100% Oklahoma-owned operations, aside from Dabba, a Denver company that moved into Oklahoma’s markets with a product I simply could not overlook (it’s that good).

I might have been hesitant to try them. However, Oklahoma Medicine consistently delivers top notch products and these sweet, savory peanut butter cups are no exception. Not only is this Oklahoma born company providing products using the purest ingredients, but they also offer a variety of dosage options for each type of consumer, including those looking for strictly CBD-infused products. www.oklahomamedicineinc.com Sleep Aid – Dabba Raspberry Chocolate Bar with Melatonin 110 mg per bar I had never taken melatonin before trying this chocolate because I’ve never really felt like I needed it. I typically have no issues falling asleep, but sometimes staying asleep can be more difficult. I felt weary of taking something that might make me feel drowsy the next day, and I wasn’t really sure what to expect. Infused with both THC and CBN, a 10 mg serving of Dabba’s Raspberry Chocolate bar gave me the absolute best sleep of my life, and I will absolutely be keeping a constant stash of these in my bedside table. This Denver-based company also offers options without melatonin in an array of different flavors. www.dabbachocolate.com

Best Overall Flavor – Dandy Lion’s Salted Caramel Butterscotch Bar 25 mg - 250 mg per bar This category was tough to fill because every product on this list tastes amazing, but one brand went above and beyond when it comes to flavor. Dandy Lion’s Salted Caramel Butterscotch bars taste like something you would pick up in a gourmet chocolate shop, and they look the part too. Infused with distillate and hand painted with an abstract design, this is one of those edibles I would almost prefer to have not infused, simply so I could eat as much as I want without overmedicating. Dandy Lion offers a number of different flavored chocolate bars. If milk chocolate isn’t your thing, check out their Strawberry Shortcake or Mint Dark Chocolate bars. You won’t be disappointed. www.instagram.com/dandylionedibles Full Spectrum – Bison Extracts’ Infused Milk Chocolate Bar 200 mg per bar With so many products on the market, it can sometimes prove difficult to find edibles that provide the entourage effect that our endocannabinoid systems crave. Bison Extracts uses full-spectrum, CO2 extracted cannabis oil with native terpenes to infuse their products, making these rich-flavored chocolates strain specific. This makes it easy for consumers to find a product that works for their specific needs, by paying attention to the terpene and cannabinoid profiles unique to each strain. Bison also offers micro-dosed Chocolate Espresso Beans that are 5mg per serving for those of us looking for a richer flavor, smaller dose, and hint of caffeine. www.bisonextracts.com High & Low Dosage – Oklahoma Medicine’s Peanut Butter Cups 50 mg – 150 mg per package | offers 500 mg CBD option Have you ever experienced the disappointment that comes with trying an edible that reminds you of your favorite candy, only to find that the familiar flavor you hoped for is completely missing? Had these peanut butter cups come from any other brand,

“When I was around twelve,” Hugh began telling me, “My mom had bought the Marshall Mathers LP. It was a 15hour trip, and we just played it on repeat. We picked up my cousins, and this song comes on. By that time, I have it all memorized. So, I am sitting there in the backseat with my 22 little cousin, and I start rapping to her. She starts laughing,

When Hugh’s son was born, he was going to the studio and writing songs while attempting to keep his career under wraps to prevent rocking the boat at home. “That is where Hugh Glass came from. I could not be Zach Rowland rapping, because my son’s mom would find out.” The truth eventually came to light, and the fallout resulted in Hugh spending the following two years sleeping on couches or in his car, trying to get his life back on track. Though he stopped making music, he never stopped writing. “Ironically,” he explained, “Most of the stuff I was writing at that time is what is on this album. It worked out perfectly, in the weirdest way. I took that risk, and now we are here.” “I feel like I am taking the same kind of risk today – taking the leap and doing this music thing, but now I have the support of my son and his mother. I have this team around me. People like Josh, and Nagy. It’s not just some leap of faith, now there is this goal, and I feel like everybody sees it.” The title of Hugh’s upcoming album is after his late father, John Wayne Rowland, nicknamed the Duke. “When we were going through all of that and I was writing,” Hugh elaborated, “I was also trying to figure out how to be a father, because I lost my dad.” “So, there is Zach, then there’s Hugh Glass – that’s where I was running from Zach. The Duke is me figuring out what I needed to do to be a father. From sleeping on couches and not seeing my son once a week, to being the example for him that I want to be. When shit gets hard, how much sweeter is it going to be in five years when it works. I want that to be the story I tell him.” “In a way I am looking for my dad in the album,” he pointed out. “Here I am risking it all when my own son needs that. That is the duke. The guy that goes and risks it all. That John Wayne type. It might not look pretty, or look the way that you want it, but it is going to get done and I am going to make sure that it is handled. At least to the best of my ability.” I recently had the opportunity to visit the set of Hugh’s latest music video, and while I can’t say that Zach Rowland fits “The Duke” persona in the traditional sense of the title, Hugh’s creative stye and willingness to venture into the weird, or wild, or unknown, 100% fits the bill. Regardless of the character he’s stepping into at any given moment, Hugh is the type of person you just want to see succeed. Now that someone who I consider to be both a friend and inspiration in my own life, I can see that Hugh’s story is only just beginning, and I cannot wait to watch the next chapter unfold. Beautiful Disaster by James Bridges HERBAGE MAGAZINE

“I’ve been using cannabis as medicine since I was little. I had always been pretty good in high school baseball and sports. I noticed when I smoked cannabis I felt more relaxed. My mom was a pharmacist. So, you know, I was always aware of the pharmaceutical side of things. Cannabis made me feel more relaxed. I fell in love with it very young. So I would just get some and never tell anyone. Especially after sporting events.” There’s a moment when you are talking to someone that is passionate about what they do and they get in this sort of trance-like state. It’s a mixture of excitement, preparedness, love, hyper-focus, and soul. When it takes over you know it. That’s where Mike Langston, the grower for Local Leaf Cultivation, was when I caught up with him. He was on a wave and I jumped on for the ride. “Then we moved to Wichita Kansas. I was nineteen years old. After about five years of adjustments and being in Wichita I had a very close musician friend. We would jam together a lot. One time after a good jam my buddy Jake says, ‘You got to come to the basement dude. I’m dying to show you something.’ So I went to the basement and I’ll never forget it. Ever. We were 24 years old and I’m 47 now. Jake pulls back this hard plastic curtain. It was the first time in my life to ever see this. There it was. A giant high pressure sodium bulb with a big mega-heavy ballast. I got chills. This was amazing! I could now grow my own medicine. I wouldn’t have to go into these shady areas to find what I needed to function. It was an eye opening experience to say the least.” I felt Mike breathing easy. In a connoisseur market, which I’m going to personally hold onto as long as possible, I look for quality cannabis. I could care less if you grow acre after acre of throw away head-change weed. I want the good. That’s why it’s so important to support. “I have a couple of friends in the LA area that grow. Actually it’s my friend Scott from the band 311. Another friend of mine that was with 311 is Ryan. He got out of the music business to grow. So I’ve always had a connection with someone that I could collaborate with somewhat.” Mike went on. “So after I got my license, I went after the Black Mamba strain. I have a few other cuttings from some grower friends. So we’ve gone through a ton of selecting on the strains. We think we’ve found some winners. It takes a minute to find. About a yearand-a-half for us. Now we’re really hitting our stride.” I’d say… Keeping it simple and interesting all at the same time. Mike believes in touching and being with every plant from seed to harvest. This was definitely my kind of grower. With strains like Black Mamba, Eiffel Tower, a super sativa Sour Apple, Blue Cheese, a very gassy and stanky Blue Purple OG, and then there’s the Grape God. “On September 22nd 2013, I was getting ready to run a marathon in Wichita, KS. The police called me and said, ‘Mr Langston you need to come to the emergency room immediately. Your son’s been involved in a stabbing.’ My son was fatally attacked in downtown Wichita by this dude with a knife. He stabbed him 57 times. The knife was stuck in his brain. He actually lived dude! I snuck cannabis into the hospital for him.” A tear was forming.

“I don’t drink alcohol and I haven’t for 15 years. So during this time, you know, it was a real struggle. Cannabis every single day is the only thing that helped me get through that trauma. To see my son lay there for 11 days in a coma... When he came out of the coma, to make a long story short, he said directly to me that we are all spiritual beings of light and I love you. Those were the first words he said.” “It was at that point when I started sneaking in cannabis oil for my son. I believed in it. I had made this for cancer patients and now I’m going to help heal my son. So I snuck it in the hospital. Man I don’t care… After he said those words to me there was no stopping.” “In twenty two days he was out of rehab and back in my house. Cannabis oil works. It is here for us to heal from the inside out. I call it the god flower.” I eventually discovered that Mike was not riding on a wave. Mike was the one that was creating a wave for many to see. He wants people to understand that happiness is obtainable. We have choices, fortunately. Most importantly, it’s about the patient. It’s still about the journey. But when you are at the helm and there are big waters ahead Mike is the perfect example of someone just like you and I. If we can continue to make a difference in other people’s lives for the better. Meanwhile he is simply working on himself. We were able to sample every strain. Each one had its own journey to create inside of someone. This was craft cannabis. But it was more. It was craft living. Thanks Mike. Local Leaf Cultivation 19680 S. Gordon Cooper Dr. Tecumseh, OK 74873 info@localleafrx.com

A revolutionary cannabis company specializing in Organic and sustainable practices. The very term “Hermetic” has its very roots in Ancient Greece as well as Ancient Egypt. Hermeticism is based upon and attributed to the teachings of Hermés Trismegistus, a sage based sometime around late antiquity. The very translation of the Hermetic corpus is what boosted The Italian renaissance. People such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo were heavily influenced by this philosophical treat. Alchemy sprang forth from these ideologies, giving birth to modern day chemistry, Science, and Western thought. This art form was then transformed into the profane, taking away its very essence, the spiritual wisdom needed to change lead (material spirit) into gold (Sun source or pure spirit). The works of Giordano Bruno, Italian Alchemist and influencer of Carl Sagan’s “Cosmos”, were stumbled upon by mixing Hermetic philosophy with Moroccan hashish...Proclaiming a Heliocentric model and that the universe was many infinite universes. This later had him burned at the cross. It is our belief that by ditching profane science and making our way back to spiritual alchemy, that we are to become one with ourselves and the plant. It is our mission to mix spiritual philosophy with craft cannabis to bring the holy trinity of healing; which is the mind, the body, and the soul. There’s absolutely no questions pertaining around cannabis NOT being a valuable medicine for physical and mental ailments...but what about the spiritual sense? The taboo nature of man itself which raises such questions of, “ why am I here? What are we doing here? What does it mean to be alive” all these have meaning and are being acted upon within the garden of the Hermetic Flower Co. We focus on maintaining a standard of medicine that’s unheard of in the state let alone the south. What else makes hermetic so special? They’re not only organic, living soil....they also make their own compost, on site, via vermicompost, AKA worm POOP! Using a specially formulated worm diet, Alex, the Director of cultivator and science, is able to influence the metaphysical properties of the body; specifically the seven chakras or seven alchemical planets through watering the compost in through a process known as ACT or Aerated compost tea.

This adds the beneficial microbiology and fungi from the high quality compost into the raised beds that team ALPACA cultivate out of. After the tea is complete, we then close the loop by disposing of the waste back into the Vemicompost bins where the process starts all over again. A full life and death cycle and we haven’t even touched on the plants yet!! Alex and his team of Alpacs, plant and harvest around the cycles of the moon. “Nothing on the planet can move water like the moon can” As the Moon influences the water in the plant, we see it as a prime time to harvest and flip our plants into flowers. Even though an indoor grow, it’s important to remember that we’re dealing with nature and respecting and understanding the cycles of nature is of the utmost importance to us. We are also in a vertical rack cultivation system meaning we cultivate on multiple levels instead of just on the ground floor. It allows us to maximize our cubic volume, which is how cannabis grows anyways, through cubic volume! Finally, our last attempt at trying our best to maintain efficiency and sustainability is using LED technology. LEDs make for a more efficient lighting source in the way that it disperses heat, it allows for excess humidity while consuming less power and allows you to manipulate the amount of photons that hit the canopy. This in combination with VPD or vapor pressure deficit, allows us to manipulate and influence our environment to mimic that of the Nepal Mountain ranges; where we believe landrace, heavy medicine comes from. We want to bring out those genetic expressions through each individual cultivar we carry. The Hermetic Flower Company isn’t just a cannabis company, it’s a cannabis lifestyle. From Italian Renaissance smoking Alchemist to every day spiritual seekers the philosophy, integrity and consistency of this company will have you thinking, feeling, and smelling LOUD!

allowing the various summons to be issued. Subsequently, the U.S. Supreme Court denied Standing Akimbo’s petition for a writ of certiorari in Standing Akimbo, LLC, et al. v. United States, No. 20-645 (decided June 28, 2021), 594 U.S. ___ (2021).

BRAVO JUSTICE THOMAS! by Sarah Lee Gossett Parrish Cannabis Lawyer

If you are in the cannabis industry, you have a very powerful friend, a man who sits on the United States Supreme Court. The dissenting Statement respecting the denial of certiorari handed down on Monday, June 28, 2021, by United States Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, one of the Court’s most conservative justices, proves he is a friend of the industry and even suggests that change may be in the air. While numerous bills have been introduced in Congress to accomplish needed changes in federal marijuana policies (I previously have written about these), when a U.S. Supreme Court Justice basically opines that federal marijuana policies have become nonsensical, one must wonder whether the courts will implement change if Congress fails to muster the courage to do so. Standing Akimbo, LLC, et al. v. United States The case in which Justice Thomas issued his Statement arrived at the Supreme Court on appeal from the decision of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit in Standing Akimbo, LLC, et al. v. United States, No. 19-1049 (10th Cir. 2020). Notably, Oklahoma is one of the states under the jurisdiction of the Tenth Circuit. This particular Tenth Circuit appeal arose out of a lower federal court (trial court) opinion issued by the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, granting the government’s motion to dismiss a petition filed by Standing Akimbo, LLC, a Colorado medical marijuana dispensary, to quash certain summons the IRS had issued to the Colorado Department of Revenue’s Marijuana Enforcement Division to confirm the dispensary owners’ tax liabilities under a civil audit of their federal tax returns. The IRS had issued several summons in an attempt to uncover evidence that Standing Akimbo had claimed business deductions prohibited by § 280E of the IRS Code, and the dispensary asked the Court to quash (prohibit) the issuance of those summons. The Tenth Circuit rejected Standing Akimbo’s position and affirmed the trial court’s opinion

Justice Thomas’s 5-page Statement respecting the denial of certiorari read it at https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/20pdf/20-645_9p6b.pdf, provides “…federal policies [to prohibit the local cultivation and use of marijuana] of the past 16 years have greatly undermined its reasoning. Once comprehensive, the Federal Government’s current approach is a half-in, half-out regime that simultaneously tolerates and forbids local use of marijuana. This contradictory and unstable state of affairs strains basic principles of federalism and conceals traps for the unwary.” Citing the Department of Justice’s infamous Cole Memorandum dated August 29, 2013 (read it at https://www. justice.gov/iso/opa/resources/3052013829132756857467. pdf), wherein U.S. Deputy Attorney General James M. Cole advised federal prosecutors to refrain from marijuana prosecutions in states where marijuana had been legalized (with eight exceptions), and a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals opinion prohibiting expenditures on the prosecution of persons in compliance with state law (United States v. McIntosh, 833 F.3d 1163, 1168, 1175-55 [9th Cir. 2016]), Justice Thomas opined that “one can certainly understand why an ordinary person might think that the Federal Government has retreated from its once-absolute ban on marijuana[.]” (Statement at p. 3), and that “[o]ne can also perhaps understand why business owners in Colorado, like petitioners, may think that their intrastate marijuana operations will be treated like any other enterprise that is legal under state law.” Id. However, as the petitioners learned, “legality under state law and the absence of federal criminal enforcement do not ensure equal treatment.” Id. Justice Thomas also noted that the “disjuncture between the Government’s recent laissez-faire policies on marijuana and the actual operation of specific laws is not limited to the tax context,” mentioning banking issues, among others, that state-legal marijuana businesses must face. Notably, Justice Thomas concluded that “[a] prohibition on intrastate use or cultivation of marijuana may no longer be necessary or proper to support the Federal Government’s piecemeal approach [to cannabis regulation and policies].” Statement at p. 5. NORML’s Executive Director, Erik Altieri, commented that “Justice Thomas’s comments reflect what has been obvious to the vast majority of Americans for some time now… This intellectually dishonest position [of federal marijuana prohibition] … complicates the ability of states to successfully regulate and oversee state-legal marijuana businesses … It is time for Congress to end this untenable situation by removing cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act so that states can make their own decisions with regard to marijuana and marijuana commerce free from undue federal interference.”

we all require a unique approach, what I came here to say today is that we’re stronger together. One of the most interesting concepts that I’ve witnessed over the last year, is the ability for a crowd to work together to change something they’re passionate about. In some cases a single hashtag trending can spark change, on a massive level. The truth is, lingering autoimmune related conditions affect roughly 50% of the country. We call them by many names, so we don’t usually think of ourselves as a unit, but honestly, we’re one of the biggest majorities, outside of gender. What would happen if we all asked for the same thing? What would happen if we asked our medical community to focus on us. I’m uniquely qualified to be so direct, because I’m successfully recovering from being bed bound. I’ve sat with countless specialists at this point and none of them had information for me to pursue wellness, it felt like I was given my options of palliative care— with 50 years to go. “Physical therapy, diet, medicines, surgeries… these will be wastes of money, the best thing we can do is make you more comfortable.” I wish I could say I’ve only heard this once. Maybe you have had a doctor prescribe a thing or two, or 10, but you know that the answer is never that simple. Patients always end up holding the most responsibility if they want a better quality of life. Science is confident enough to believe we can inject protection and prevent a specific illness, but if you are already sick… we’re so sorry to hear that? And that’s when it hit me… we’re asking for the wrong things. How safe are we if there’s no plan for those who fall through the cracks? What if the number of those with chronic illness continues to increase?

Hey Sick Person by Tab Moura

This goes out to the newest members of the chronic illness community. I am a cannabis educator and wellness coach. Over the last year I’ve done a lot of listening. Do you know what people fear more than dying from Covid? They fear getting sick with Covid and never *fully* recovering. They fear something that many people are genuinely dealing with. While we know that conditions like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME) have been around for a long time, often treated as a pseudo diagnosis, it’s suddenly become widely accepted as the crowd of those suffering from it is growing. People are getting sick, and some of them are still sick. Maybe it’s mild, maybe it’s debilitating… but you are not where you were beforehand. I know what that’s like. While I don’t give health advice online, because I believe

There I was, spending thousands of dollars trying to work within a health system that only knows how to keep us alive. First of all, what a valuable skill that is, right? If I am in an accident and need help, I’m thankful they exist. But what does this mainstream narrative teach us about thriving? Where can we go to learn about recovering? What the heck are micronutrients, how do I get proper sleep, how do I choose good brain foods, and yes, how do I support my immune system? We find one another. We look for the people who’ve already done it. I was nervous about writing this article, because when you’re someone who cannot use pharmaceuticals, people assume you are anti-Pharma. They think you are biased. The truth is, I have my biases. I’m happy to be transparent about mine, because acknowledging my biases helped me find healing. I wish we were all more honest about such things. I’ve never had a client who is Pharma and chemical free to the extent that I am. I haven’t even considered turning someone away due to their choice to use Pharma. Pharma keeps people alive. Pharma has helped me stay alive once as well. But Pharma didn’t help me thrive. Perhaps it’s time we start asking for more. People are out here healing themselves, and the methods we use deserve recognition… not because natural medicine needs validation, but because people deserve to hear about it.

Who’s Justice? by Brittiany Ralls

“What are you in for?” She asked. My cellmate’s name was Megan and she had spent a period of her life in and out of jail. I had never been to jail. So this was very new territory for me. “Possession of weed.” I replied. All she could do was laugh…. Being an advocate for cannabis I got her sentiment. “I don’t mean to laugh, but I haven’t been to jail for something that small in a long time,” she said. It became a little bit of a joke to be honest amongst my cellmates. My entire journey of being arrested to leaving the jail takes no more than sixteen hours. 16 hours of confusion, loss of privacy, biased treatment, nothing short of trauma…

For our community:

Contentment, Pride, Feeling Fulfilled. This month we are basking in the glory of the experiences we have created for ourselves. You are likely feeling pleased with your life right now. Lately it feels as though all of your wishes have come true. This feeling won’t last forever, make sure to soak up all of that blissful, euphoric energy while you can! Allow yourself to splurge a little this month, not necessarily through spending money, but also spending time on yourself and the things you love. Continue to count your blessings and thank the universe, yourself, and whatever higher power you believe in. Gratitude, always. Practice: gratitude journals, laughing meditations, noticing the little things

Reason given on the paperwork… Interest of Justice. I find this so interesting since I’m not sure which and who’s justice we are speaking of. I was arrested for felony possession of an illegal substance. Most cases like this are brought upon someone who was caught with a substance like methamphetamines or I don’t know….heroin? But, since I was caught with a cannabis concentrate they tried to charge me with a felony, in particular because my arresting officer wasn’t convinced it was ONLY THC. So he charged me with a felony stating that, and I quote, “the labs will run better tests, so we will find out what this actually is!” You may be wondering how they found my cannabis to begin with. By searching my vehicle, without my permission. Since I had no trouble with the law they were able to release me after booking me in through a pretrial process. Within the next week I met with my lawyer to discuss my case and options. He informed me that since this is a first case for me that I might be able to get my case dismissed or at the very least be put on what’s called a deferred adjudication, basically probation. He told me we would meet again when he was able to obtain the evidence involved with my case. Due to so many factors within the court system being backed up, we never saw any evidence before my first court date. This meant my new court date was rescheduled for six weeks away. “To give everyone time to review all aspects of my case including the evidence.” June 4th, 2020 I received a text message from my lawyer, who informed me that my case had now been dismissed! Ecstatic yet curious. Within minutes I was able to print out copies of my documents showing the dismissal of my case. To my surprise I see that the reason my case is dismissed is stated as: “INTEREST OF JUSTICE” Peculiar choice of words for me.... Was this justice on my behalf or theirs…. Was this another cannabis case that someone shouldn’t have gone to jail for, or was this a way for them to sweep under the rug the division within even their own system as to what is to be convicted when it’s a discussion of cannabis. Was it justice on my behalf because I was illegally searched? Was it justice on their behalf so that another case of wrong doing from a police officer wouldn’t be known to the public? I’m glad to be done with it. It’s just sad to say that I’m not sure who was actually being protected, me or them.

No-Bake Cookies

(but will get you baked)

by Anna Ervin

If you are not keeping the necessary ingredients for no-baked cookies in your pantry at any given time, chances are you’re doing the whole munchies at 2 a.m. thing wrong. I love nothing more than a recipe that I can throw together in one pan to avoid a pile of dishes later. Even better, it only takes about 10-15 minutes to whip up this sweet treat. The traditional no-bake cookie recipe is loaded with acidic dairy products and high-cholesterol fats, so I’ve decided to share an infused version that’s a little easier on the stomach. The cookies I made are infused with 200mg of canna-coconut oil in place of butter. I swapped the dairy milk for an oat-based option, but cashew, almond, coconut, and soy would all work well here. For the sugar, I decided to go with raw because if I’m going to eat sweets – the less they’re processed, the better. Potency: 200mg THC | 25-30mg THC per serving Servings: 6-8

CANNABANANA & MOM INGREDIENTS: 3 ¼ cup oatmeal (opt for GF-option) ½ cup THC-infused coconut oil ½ cup peanut butter ½ cup oat or cashew milk 2 cups raw sugar ¼ cup cocoa powder ¼ - ½ tsp Himalayan salt

Add canna-coconut oil, peanut butter, milk, sugar, cocoa and salt to a large sauce pan, stirring frequently over medium heat. Bring mixture to a boil, continuing to stir for 4 minutes. Remove from heat and quickly stir in vanilla, bringing the mixture to a boil. Add the oats and combine evenly. Scoop 1” rounds onto wax paper and allow to cool before serving, or savagely eat the warm cookie “dough” out of a bowl. Store at room temp for 2-3 days (if they last that long).
