Please Note: HERE & NOW magazine is distributed over a 12 day period. For this reason our what’s on listings will cover the month of publication and the first week of the following month. For a small new independent start-up, distribution of our massive 38,000 print-run is a logistical challenge. As we grow, we aim to complete distribution in a single week.

Not Exactly What I Planned We’re moving, so it’s goodbye from me and it’s goodbye for him. The end of March marks a quite important anniversary for me. Not because I will end up despising myself for breaking another promise about not eating all my son’s Easter Eggs and blaming it on next doors cat. No, it’s more important than that. It will have been exactly three years ago, that we upped sticks from the ‘big smoke’, otherwise known as Hove and moved the fifteen miles along the coast to the ‘1970’s’ otherwise known as Worthing.

to invest their time and energy in making the town a better version of itself. So to all the unsung heroes of our town that I’ve met over the last three years, I salute you. It’s because of all your hard work and dedication that the ‘Sunny’ really does go into Worthing. Local Roll Call To the staff who work throughout the year to keep our beaches and parks free from litter and stagdo’s.

has allowed me to build a full-time business out of a mid-life crisis idea. To all the artists that hang out near Splashpoint and open their homes as part of ‘Open House’ that allows us to trail around and be amazed at their talent.

I can still remember the looks on the faces of my friends, at the time when I told them. ‘Worthing? Really? What are you thinking?’ came the chorus of disapproval like I had confessed to being Jimmy Saville’s wingman. They were convinced that those fifteen miles away signalled waving goodbye to ‘Rock & Roll’ and the beautiful, Gluten-free people that haunt Hove Lawns and the acceptance of wardrobes filled with trousers with elasticated waistbands and trainers made for the allotment rather than the dancefloor. But hey what do they know? Now, looking back I am so very glad I didn’t listen to them. Because for me, the last three years have been nothing short of life-changing and all for the right reasons. Rather than selling out and getting to hang up my spurs, I am now surrounded by people that want to get together and make things happen. People that actually want

The bar owners who keep opening up lovely places to drop into for a swift half (shout out to the Green Man, Coast and the Corner House). The brilliant staff at places like Worthing Theatres, St Paul’s, Southern Pavilion and The Dome for continuing to put on great events that don’t cost the earth. They keep both me on the dancefloor and my four-yearold actively engaged with the wonders of cinema, live music and theatre. For the beautiful free spirits, like the lovely Cathy, who brightens up our days with her smile and voice by singing with her guitar outside M&S. To all the TotRockinBeats’ Mums and Dads who have joined the tribe and chatted to me on the school run, in the various parks and streets. It is your lust for life and the need for a night-out, that

To all the old people, I bump into that don’t seem to mind a young boy and cap-wearing dad, hurtling around on their scooters. And smile a friendly smile at our mischief. Most importantly, to our neighbours who have made us feel so welcome and have become close friends and surrogate family (Gertrude!) when our own are based miles away. It is to you I salute and thank you from the bottom of my heart. It’s because of you that I am in part happier now than I have been in years.

Get together and make things happen

Three years here and now we are moving - well only a street away as I really wouldn’t and couldn’t imagine wanting to raise my growing family anywhere else. Worthing Rocks! So until next time, Keep on keepin’ on, keep it real and keep em’ peeled.

The Night the Ambassador REALLY Spoilt Us!

Andrew Page, until recently one of Her Majesty’s British Ambassadors, was the Speaker at a dinner at the Ardington Hotel in Feb. We asked ‘Cub Reporter’ Ed Carr, to review the proceedings. It may be a common occurrence to you dear reader, but I’ve not spent a great many of my evenings being wined and dined in the company of one of Her Majesty’s Ambassadors. In fact, the number of such evenings could be counted on the fingers of one hand. In further fact, the number of such evenings would be more accurately counted if my hand had inadvertently lost three of its fingers. Yes, this was my first such evening. And it was a fascinating glimpse into the world BEHIND the world that most of us usually only see through the filter of various media. The Ambassador was engaging, informative, and remarkably frank. And I thoroughly enjoyed it, and the Ambassador said that he did too. To the extent that it is likely he’ll do it all over again in about six months. But let’s start at the start. The Ambassador is Andrew Page, the venue is the Indigo Restaurant Private Dining at The Ardington Hotel in Steyne Gardens, and the Ambassador is the guest of the Hotel’s Director, Mr Simon Margaroli. Andrew and Simon first met as schoolboys at Lancing College, and have remained firm friends ever since, so it’s a natural extension of that friendship that brings Andrew to the Ardington as Simon’s guest. Simon graciously invited a selection of Patrons and acquaintances to join him for the evening as well. The evening began at 7pm with an hour-long presentation from Andrew, which in essence had two, very different, themes. The first is a sweep through the life of a career diplomat, so sequentially covers the period from Andrew’s first posting as a member of the opening diplomatic team in the British Embassy in Kiev, coming just after it had gained independence from the Old Soviet Union. Next, Andrew was an FCO

spokesman challenged with giving his boss, Robin Cooke, good press whilst he left his wife to marry his secretary (That’s Mr Cooke, not Andrew). Then on to the South African desk for two years after Mandela handed over power to Mbeki. Then on to Paris in the build up to the Gulf war, and then from 2004, three very busy years as deputy head of The Russia, south Caucasus and central Asia Directorship, during which time former spy Alexander Litinvenko was assassinated with Polonium 210 and the Georgia Russia war raged. Following this, Andrew was appointed British Ambassador to Slovenia from 2009 until December 2013. The second theme of Andrew’s talk slowly reveals itself in all the detail that accompanies each of those experiences. And he is very open, and perhaps surprisingly frank, in that detail. He revealed his thoughts about the Iraq war, and the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair’s, role in that ill-fated enterprise (his thought’s not being the conventional wisdom at all). And he spoke equally frankly about current political and diplomatic matters, including his opinions on The Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow (whom he knows), Russian Cyber attacks (of which he has witnessed many), Russian aggression in general (of which he is highly suspicious: “In my experience, they are guilty until proved innocent”), and yes, the diplomatic and security issues raised by the unconventional behaviour of the current US President (“Watch this space”). What resonates from Andrew’s inside knowledge is the revelation of just how dependant we all are on the very small number of individuals who actually understand all the details of each particular global situation or crisis. For an hour, Andrew held us enthralled with his descriptions

and insights into events that we’d all watched, but none of us other than him, had actually witnessed at close hand. Although he only applied “Chatham House” rules to a few elements of his presentation, it’s not for me to reveal what he told us. In conclusion, this review of the evening would not be complete without a mention of our host, his attentive hospitality, and the fine dining that followed Andrew’s talk. Simon Margaroli is the fourth generation of his family to run the Ardington Hotel, and his pride in also running the Hotel’s Indigo Restaurant is clearly evident. Which explains why I’m definitely going to keep my eyes on the Indigo website (indigorestaurant.info) for other upcoming, interesting, events. So thank you Ambassador for your insights, and thank you Simon for your hospitality. I’m already looking forward to the next time. There - I managed to get through that entire review without naming Ferrero Rocher. Doh... Ed Carr is the Co-Founder of Davenport Property Investment, and Chairman of the South Down Project. And far too old to be a ‘Cub Reporter’.

An Outpouring of Art and Poetry Hazel Imbert talks all things art with Gary Goodman: Painter, Printmaker and Performance Poet Painter, printmaker and performance poet, Gary Goodman, is a striking figure in the Worthing landscape. His work is arresting. He tells me, over a peppermint tea in Giuseppe Lite, that he draws and paints all the time. Drawing is something he has always done. It was the source of a memorable moment of pride as a kid, when his drawings of a Scotsman and of a train were praised at school; it set him on a path. Moving to Brighton, Gary studied illustration and then took a Master’s in printmaking. He took his skills into teaching, which is still a big part of his practice; he is a tutor at Northbrook College, runs painting courses at West Dean, teaches printmaking at Brighton Independent Print Makers, holds life classes at Brighton University and Seawhites, and is resident poet at Southampton University. He exhibits nationally and internationally, and gives poetry readings as part of the programme. He has been awarded a wide variety of art prizes and included in poetry anthologies. Gary has a studio in Hove where he works on larger pieces, but described producing a lot of his work at the kitchen table, using and developing monoprinting techniques with accessible tools and materials. His work is included in ‘Traditional and Contemporary Techniques’ by Ann D’Arcy Hughes, and ‘Painting the Figure: a new approach to printmaking’ by Emily Ball. He is inspired by words, often including text in his work; his common subjects are women, animals and trees. Gary was enthusiastic about a recent project, ‘Playland’, currently at the Worthing Museum and Art Gallery (until 22 April, free). Tinted monoprints and colourful acrylic

ARTS & CULTURE

self-portraits, by customers of Coastal Enterprises Day Centre, produced in collaboration with Gary. The project was designed to explore their relationship with their local communities and their sense of place as part of their identity. It includes prints chosen from the Museum’s permanent collection through which they expand associations with place. A film, ‘People Pebble’ by Jivko Darakchiev, is showing within the exhibition, presenting the changing relationships between people and the places where they work and play. The exhibition is original and relatable. I asked Gary about living and working in Worthing, after having lived in Brighton, and we agreed that there was space to breathe here; “You’re never more than 5 metres away from an artist in Brighton,” he observed. We talked about Worthing’s art trail- Worthing Artists Open Houses. He is participating this year, excited to be in Martina Ziewe’s venue. You can also see his work at the Zimmer Stewart Gallery, in Arundel. I would also recommend catching one of his poetry performances. My impression of Gary was of a stream of creative energy, outpouring art and poetry, and inspiring the people he teaches to do the same. His work is described as “resoundingly direct, and unbothered by artistic self-consciousness”. It presents an affirmative view, albeit disconcerting. Often funny.

Hazel Imbert is a member of the WAOH steering group, worthingartistsopenhouses.com See more of Gary’s work at garygoodman.wordpress.com

Worthing WOW Update

every month in Here & Now World Book Day Last month, we invited you to send in photos from World Book Day. Here’s just a small selection of the FANTASTIC outfits worn by children who took part. Thank you to the parents for allowing us to share pictures. Hope you had a great day Jeannie, Arthur, Johnny & Trin! (see right) Wish You Were Here, Sun 23 April, 12:45–3pm Dome Cinema. From £8.50. 12 years & over only.

The classic British film, ‘Wish You Were Here’ was filmed in and around Worthing 30 years ago – in 1987. To celebrate the launch of a new book about 120 years of film in Worthing and Sussex – ‘Electric Pictures’ (published by the History Press) – Worthing WOW will be hosting a special book launch and film screening at the Dome Cinema which features in the film itself. The film will be introduced by its esteemed director David Leland – who has also written the Foreword to the book – and after the film there will be a Q&A with him about his glittering Hollywood career and what it was like to film in Worthing 30 years ago. Worthing WOW organizes this event for the community of Worthing to celebrate creativity, to inspire our younger generation, and to raise funds for future festival events. We hope you’ll join us for this special one-off not to be missed event. This screening event links in with Worthing’s new Wish You Were Here Festival which is taking place over the same weekend, showcasing a range of performance makers in pub venues around Worthing, including, theatre, comedy, film, spoken word and music. The weekend promises to be a celebration of Worthing, the arts and the good old British seaside. Time to Re-group The Worthing WOW festival has been going from strength to strength – last year saw some 10,000 people enjoying film events and family fun days, writers’ workshops and poetry readings. Now it’s time to pause and re-group ahead of the Oscar Wilde festival in 2018. But never fear: there are plenty more exciting projects planned for 2017, including educational Wilde-themed workshops and a special Wilde Write Night. There are lots of ways you can get involved: volunteer your talents and time (email volunteer@worthingwow.co.uk or follow us on Facebook to find out more); help raise funds to stage the festival – see our website or email info@ worthingwow.co.uk.

WOWsers! Calling all budding writers of 15 and under! Send us your poems, stories and articles (no more than 250 words please) for a chance to be published on this page. Send to submissions@worthingwow.co.uk marked WOWsers in the subject line. Tell us your age, where you come from and the name of your school, and send us a photo or an image if you can. To start us off, here’s a poem by Daisy Adhangale, aged 8. Daisy belongs to Tiger’s Eye Writers creative writing workshops for children aged 7-11. Stars, Sun and the Moon I dance around the sky calling my friends. I see the huge ball of light, I know I am smaller but bright. I make pictures with friends in the sky, Watching rockets passing by, humans dreaming to fly, Looking at the silvery ball in the sky wishing I was nearby, Feeling sad and bad but happy and glad, Shining bright and satisfying children with my light. Introducing Spotlight, our new slot for local writers. Like to be featured? Send your poems, stories, articles or reviews to submissions@worthingwow.co.uk SPOTLIGHT on… Marion Sharville As we celebrate the West Sussex film industry with the launch of new book “Electric Pictures”, this is just a taster of Marion’s wonderful poem, “The Cinema in the Nineteen Thirties”. You can read the whole thing on her blog, “A Carrot in the Toaster”. Depression stalked our beloved Country with endless days of poverty and want. Sad memories of the First World War still deep in our hearts, to grieve and to haunt. A six-day week, a pay packet to spend; nine-pence put by to go, with a friend, to see a film and sample delights of Romance and Glamour, on Saturday nights. Bright lights beckoned as we stepped off the bus, everything seemed to be welcoming us. The foyer, a cavern of red, gold and cream, then darkness, a torch and the Silver Screen. Competition Time – we’re going bananas! April is the month Shakespeare was born (1564) and it is also the month (1633) bananas first went on sale in England. The challenge is to write a Shakespearean Ode to a Banana – 15 lines or fewer excluding title. Entries, please, to submissions@worthingwow.co.uk by 30 March. Date for your Diary Four West Sussex authors will be launching their books in Arundel from 10am to 1pm on Sunday 30 April. Come along and chat, over Buck’s Fizz and cake, with Angela Petch (“Then and Now in Tuscany”), Rosemary Noble (“Ranter’s Wharf”), Jane Weymouth (“Eliza Stone”) and Patricia Feinberg Stoner (“At Home in the Pays d’Oc”). The launch will be held in the Jubilee Gallery at the Arundel Museum, Mill Road, Arundel BN18 9PA.

Restaurant Review Life’s a Beach (House)... Calling out from Worthing’s “seafront strip” is The Beach House, nestled between the local institutions which are The Dome and Macari’s. The warm and welcoming interior beckons you to cross the outside decking area (destined to be full and lively in the Summer, but this is March, remember) and enter. Once inside, your eyes are drawn to the newly refurbished bar, the venue’s name in the stylish tiles below and a friendly, smiling face above it. We took a table for two in the lower area, although a couple of steps can take you up into the recesses of the bar for a more secluded rendezvous. The menu is very much focused on burger and grill options, but that’s no bad thing on a blustery Spring day. There are salads and sharing platters where you choose

the locally-sourced cheeses and meat to feast upon. From the grill menu, I chose a lamb burger with harissa mayonnaise and Joe opted for a tuna loin burger with the same spicy, creamy sauce. We started with a home-made mackerel pate and sourdough toast...just the ticket. Drinks-wise, I selected a draft lager and Joe opted for one of the many fruit juice bottled drinks. The Beach House’s range of beverages is extensive and very tempting! When our burgers arrived, fresh from the small kitchen (which belies the great food that comes out of it), they were soon devoured, accompanied by crisp and hot fries, and salad. The lamb was tender and its sweetness was balanced by the zing of the harissa. Joe said his Tuna was just right, still slightly pink on the inside. Nothing but brioche bun

crumbs remained for either of us. We skipped dessert (I am on my wedding diet, and Joe is very supportive in that regard!), but options include home-made cakes and brownies and a range of locally-produced ice-creams. Whether you’re here for drinks or meal or even a coffee and catchup with friends, The Beach House ticks all the boxes to satisfy its clientele, and has got its ambience just right.

Superstar Arts Recommend: The Empty Plate Café The Lovett Centre, Maybridge Square, Durrington. The Empty Plate Café is a ‘pay as you like’ café, a concept which means that healthy and nutritious meals are available to everybody in the local community regardless of their financial situation.

Expect quality food and a great menu. You simply pay what you can afford or what you feel the meal is worth. Or give a little time back as a volunteer. Superstar Artist Claire explained that when she arrived it felt very friendly and welcoming. She said “I had mushrooms stuffed with cheese and bacon, I then had banoffee pie for pudding, it was all very good. I had a great time. They were happy to do some changes to the menu for people with special diets.” Adele said that the ‘Empty Plate’ was busy and had a nice atmosphere. “I had a chicken stir fry, it was yummy. I would go there again. It has WIFI and I would recommend it to other people with learning disabilities too!”

Why not make a ‘Fresh Start’ and find the job you want! Ant Andrews is 22 and has been part of Blueprint 22 employment support project ‘Fresh Start’. Ant shares his experiences and speaks to project leader Veronica about how Blueprint 22 can support people into work.

What is your dream job and what steps are you taking to get there? In the long term, I would like to run my own American diner! I want to save enough money to be able to bring a bit of the USA to Worthing!

Interview with Ant:

Interview with Veronica:

So Ant, how is your job hunting going? I have applied for quite a few jobs and have recently become an ambassador, promoting and selling tickets for the latest Wildlife Festival happening at Brighton City Airport. I’m not on benefits because it is a hassle, so I need to earn my own money.

How is Blueprint 22 different when it comes to helping people my age find jobs? If a young adult is looking for work and wants our help, we’ll meet them at anytime and place so they can access support even outside of traditional office hours. We don’t give up on anyone looking for work – we will help them for as long as they need and until they get a job. And, all young adults self refer to the project - they are actively searching for work rather than being told that they need to find it.

What advice would you offer to anyone else who is looking for work? Look on social media & job groups on Facebook or sites like ‘Indeed’ on the internet for different areas of work. I also rely on the internet to search for jobs locally.

How do you help people find the jobs they actually want?

We ask everyone who wants a job what they would like to do in the long term and then together we work out where they can start off in order to reach that goal. What success rate do you have at finding people jobs in your employment project? We have a 100% success rate in all of our employment projects because we don’t stop trying until each person involved has

achieved their initial aims. What advice would you give to anyone looking for work? Don’t give up! ‘Fresh Start’ is for anyone aged 16-25. Want to know more about this or Blueprint 22? Contact Veronica on 07495 916259. You can find Ant on Facebook ‘Ant Andrews’.

Cancer survivor urges others to

make you feel better. Move More Sussex is great for advising just the right amount of activity to people dealing with cancer and the consequences of treatment.”

Nic Naish, 47 from Worthing, finished her treatment in 2010 and has since re-trained as a cancer and exercise rehabilitation specialist. She is helping to deliver Move More Sussex - a free physical activity programme for people living with cancer.

Move More is Macmillan’s national campaign to help people living with cancer to get more active. Recent research shows that taking part in physical activity during and after cancer treatment can have a host of positive impacts, from limiting fatigue and improving a person’s mood, to helping with cancer outcomes.

The programme is being run by Brighton & Hove Albion’s official charity Albion in the Community (AITC) in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support. Nic says: “Keeping active gives you a fighting chance on so many levels. It prevents a lot of the muscle wastage and loss in bone density associated with chemotherapy and general lack of mobility. “It also gets the much needed endorphins released to

Anyone who has an experience of cancer in the last five years can sign up. AITC’s fully-qualified coaches will meet and offer support as well as providing access to tailored classes nearby. Macmillan Cancer Support’s partnership manager Kristiina Parkinson was equally enthusiastic about the benefits of Move More Sussex. She said: “It’s never too

late to reap the benefits so I would encourage anyone with an experience of cancer in the last five years to get in touch with Albion in the Community. It doesn’t matter what your previous or current fitness levels are – Nic and the team will help you find the right level of physical activity for you.”

The Worthing Town Centre Initiative

Town Centre Manager, Sharon Clarke took time out to chat with Here & Now about her love of the town and the role of Worthing TCI. The TCI was formed in 1993 with a remit to represent businesses within the Town Centre. The TCI is a business led, not for profit, Community Interest Company (CIC) whose vision is for a clean, safe and vibrant town centre where businesses thrive. The TCI serves the area from the West at Heene Road to the East as far as the Aquarena site to the North just past the Town Hall. So why Worthing? What keeps you here? Sharon: I used to travel extensively across the UK and would look at other places, always comparing them to Worthing. There were very few other places I’d liked to have stayed. There’s a lot of positives here and our location between the sea and the Downs. Sometimes you have to look through the eyes of someone who doesn’t see this place every day. And our town still has so much more potential. We’ve seen a lot of positive changes in recent years. Look at the ice rink; the TCI started this in 2009 when there was little for people to do during the winter months. Phil Ducket, (Southern Pavilion) took it on in 2014 and it’s been fantastic for our town centre. There’s very few towns with an ice rink and this helps bring people into Worthing. There’s also a positive approach from the local council. They want to invest in Worthing. The money that’s gone into Montague Street, love it or hate it, it is an investment. It’s very easy to talk about sites like Union Place and Teville Gate but they’re not owned by the Council, there’s a lot of frustrations but if everyone can get behind the positives and focus on how they can help to overcome the negatives, the town will continue to be a better place to live. When people say to me that nothing happens in Worthing it frustrates me because every weekend something is happening in Worthing. There’s so many more community led groups coming together to put events on in our town – the Lions, Rotary Club, the Armed Forces groups, Sunny Worthing, Tide of Light and many more. And with the theatres and venues in town, we’re building a great cultural offer.

LOCAL BUSINESS

So, tell us a bit more about your role and the role of Worthing TCI. Sharon: It was a short-term role that’s extended now to 15 years! Often, people think that I work for the Council but the TCI is a business led CIC. Our remit is to have a vibrant and exciting town centre, where business can thrive, that’s what we work towards. From the public’s perspective, it’s positive for them too, as we put events on to help the businesses. We run events like the seafront planting competition, which starts mid May, the French market, which will be back in July, the Urban Beach comes back in August and we are introducing a new Chilli Fiesta in August. This year’s Food Festival will run on 16 & 17 September. We also run Christmas events like the S Club 7 performance to bring shoppers to town. The social aspect of our town is so important, particularly as retail is contracting everywhere. We want to protect what we have but continue to change and grow and become social spaces. So, we lobby for enhancements and improvements in the town. We backed the plans for the ‘Montague Quarter’ development, which will hopefully become a vibrant place that will support the rest of the town. We invest in some of the enhancements. We try to make the town look more attractive for the business and public, we fund some of the Town Centre planting, and all the Christmas lights. And we also deal with the more mundane issues, like chewing gum removal. We have a communication and marketing role. We communicate with the town centre businesses to keep them informed of what’s going on. We operate the ‘Shopwatch and Radio Link’ scheme to help prevent crime. We lobby to get the town centre business’ voice out there. We market the town and promote the businesses; through the media, our website and Facebook pages, the Worthing Loyalty Card and the Town Crier. We produce a food and drink guide and the independent shops guide which is free marketing for all TCI businesses. We have such a fabulous food and drink offer in our town, we’ll even

put menus on our website. And, how is the TCI structured and funded? Sharon: The TCI has 5 unpaid directors and a steering committee. There’s representation from large business, small independents, the night time economy, a hotel, Pubwatch and the Chamber of Commerce and the Councils, represented by their officers and members. We’re a small team, I have an assistant town centre manager, two town centre rangers, who work 30 hours per week each and we look after Bob, the Town Crier! Our income comes from two elements. We are a Business Improvement District (BID); town centre business pay 1% extra on their business rates and that money is ringfenced for local initiatives rather than going back to Government, giving us around £200,000 per year to invest. The Wednesday Market in Montague Street helps towards the Christmas lights. We work on the ‘art of the achievable’. It’s about using the money available to us to have the biggest impact. There’s a formal business plan in place and we have our AGM later this month in March, when business is invited to look at the plans and where the money has been spent. So how do people get involved? Sharon: The public can get involved by attending events and completing the surveys – if we get a strong enough demand for something, we will look to try to achieve this. Keeping in mind the

‘art of the achievable’, we can’t please all the people all the time and we often have to look at stuff that’s a bit more mainstream. My main request is that people get behind their town and support local business - when you’re buying something online – think - could I get this from the town centre. Worthing TCI offices are located at 12 The Steyne, Worthing BN11 3DS. Tel: 01903 203252 worthingtowncentre.co.uk

LOCAL BUSINESS FEATURE

What a difference a day makes Transform your conservatory in less than a day with our insulated roof panels Conservatories are usually constructed to add extra living space to a home. A lot of people find however, that from mid-November through until about mid-March, their conservatory is just too cold to pleasantly sit in without spending a small fortune on heating it and then from mid-June through until about the end of September, that same space is unbearably hot during the day. So what’s the answer? In 2010 the planning laws were relaxed and in the majority of cases, you can now fit a solid roof to your conservatory without planning permission. This means better insulation, keeping the room warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, and a room that you can use all year round.

in the South, our system is compatible with most conservatories, old and new - plus it comes with a ten year guarantee. Your conservatory that was too cold to eat your breakfast in the morning, could be lovely and cosy by dinner time. Transform your conservatory in one day - contact us today on 01903322004 or find us online at www.greenspaceconservatories.co.uk and see what a difference a day makes!

Green Space Ltd is a family run company. We specialise in transforming conservatories. Our roof panels are lightweight and offer eight times better insulation than a polycarbonate roof. With U-values of 0.29, they will keep your conservatory at a comfortable temperature all year round. What’s more, the panels are manufactured to measure off site, so installation generally takes less than a day, and we always aim to ensure that your roof conversion is as non-disruptive as possible. We are the sole supplier of this system

Spring into action Didn’t get around to starting that new exercise regime in January? “Well, I was going to start a new exercise regime in January, but that got waylaid as I hadn’t finished all the Christmas booze and snacks, so I thought “Might as well start in February instead.” But then Feb goes by like nobody’s business and before I know it I’m staring down the barrel of March, when it was Terry’s stag weekend, so I thought “No need to upset the apple cart; I’m a pragmatist. I’ll just leave it to April.” But then all the chocolate bunnies start appearing and as a committed animal lover I can’t ignore them, so I suppose what I’m saying is that 2018 is the year when you’re really gonna see the new me…” Sound depressingly familiar? The winter’s excesses take their toll to be replaced by a zealous New Year’s fitness crusade. But the campaign is then quickly usurped by the familiar customs of everyday life. So how do you break those habits? Well thankfully Worthing has an abundance of distractions for the energetically inclined, which range from the free to the exclusive. For the willing and able, there really is no excuse not to put on those trainers and start shedding some pounds. There’s an abundance of local gyms to choose from that cater for workout advocates and novices alike. Prefer the fresh air? Head down to the latest free outdoor gym recently opened in Homefield Park. Back in doors, Anytime Fitness, recently opened opposite Teville Gate, offers a 24 hour

SPORT

facility. If you’re seeking a personal trainer, then why not contact the Sussex Performance Centre at Worthing College, Northbrook (College) Fitness Centre run by Nuffield Health or one of the South Downs Leisure Centres, all of whom are serious about helping you achieve your athletic goals. For a small group experience try Bandana Health & Fitness on the Tarring Road. And if you’re a personal trainer lacking some personal space to ply your trade then Worthing Fitness Studio offers handy room to hire. To some people, myself included, the notion of sweating in a room full of Lycra-clad strangers is as alien as a pint without pork scratchings. So it’s just as well that a whole platter of alternative activities are on offer to help you shed those ill-gotten, pubinduced pounds. You can ease your way into exercise with a bracing programme of walks coordinated by the likes of Get Fit Worthing (see their Facebook group) run by Kenny & Lisa Rye. Take in the sights of Worthing, improve your fitness and get to socialise with likeminded people. For those of you who’d prefer to stretch your legs a little further, then how about enrolling in the annual half-marathon? The next one takes place in February 2018, so that’s almost a year to get all those bad habits out of your system in preparation. You could ready yourself by joining the parkrun for free, a timed 5km jog/sprint/flail, which takes place every Saturday morning at 9am on Worthing seafront from Splashpoint (see last month’s issue for full feature). Speaking of which, if those mind and body-boosting activities lack a certain allure, then a plethora of kite-surfing, paddle-boarding and water-based happenings are right here by the seaside. And for those Weekend Wigginses out there, you can cycle to Brighton and beyond on the South Coast Cycle Route; whizz through the rural charms of the Downs Link

(all the way to Guildford if desired) or head over to Steyning via the steep but picturesque Bostal. Let’s also not forget the hi-jinks, jumps and chicanery of the UK Street Velodrome, taking place on Worthing Seafront at the end of June. So next time you feel that a sporting chance has passed you by, have a look at the excellent array of fitness opportunities on your doorstep. Those hard-earned chocolate bunnies and pork scratchings will never taste so good.

I want to ride my

bicycle bicycle bicycle

SPORT

Ben Dobbin tells Here & Now how cycling took his friend Pete Mitchell from the Downs to Rio.

Want to ride your bike?

My greatest memories of being a teenager in West Sussex are nearly all linked to cycling. From the age of 10, when I got my first ‘proper’ mountain bike for Christmas, I’d pester my dad to take me cycling, along the sea front, up the river Adur bike path to Bramber castle, or over the downs.

Worthing Excelsior Cycling Club, Sunday morning ride, starts 9am from Broadwater Green. Members are organised into separate groups to cater for differing abilities and aspirations. Juniors are encouraged and supported. (check website for up to date info on this and other rides and to join the club). worthingexcelsior.co.uk

Living on Shoreham Beach at the time, we soon heard of VC Jubilee, a youth cycling group that would meet on a Saturday morning at the Adur Rec, and head out for a couple of hours mountain biking. Run by volunteers, with parents welcome, this club would take us out every week, no matter the weather. It soon became the favourite part of my week, even as a young teenager, to whom mornings become the worst thing in the world, I would happily jump up on a Saturday morning with the anticipation of a good ride with my friends. As I grew older, the club provided me with a wealth of friends with a similar disposition, who I could rely on to join me on longer rides, sometimes taking up the whole day, after the morning ride with VC Jubilee was completed. Whether it was a warm and dusty summers day, a soaking wet day with thunder in the distance, or a cold and frosty winter one, the Downs would always welcome us with its bridle paths and woodland tracks. It taught me selfsufficiency, as we had no mobile phones, we soon learned that if we could not fix our bicycles (and sometime patch each other up too), then we would have a long walk home carrying our gear instead! It has never ceased to amaze me the number of volunteers who were available for those Saturday rides, as well as people who would take us to racing at Preston Park in Brighton. Without those

volunteer drivers, helpers, racing bike loaners, and the race officials themselves, I would never have got into that side of the sport. Even more importantly, I’d never have taken my friend Pete to his first race night, which was the starting point for his now very successful career as a para-cyclist with team GB (Pete Mitchell is the Pilot for Neil Fachie in the tandem track sprint and 1km time trials, for which they are world champions and world record holders). That same attitude for helping a young cyclist is shared at nearly any independent bike shop that you enter, with the folks in there always ready to chat, help you rebuild your bike and keep it maintained, usually for very little cost. In a world where a young adult has no car, and limited public transport, the use of a reliable bike and the confidence to take it anywhere, can give anyone the freedom they crave at that age. Ben Dobbin, keen cyclist, retired talent scout

Quest Adventure lead free mixed mountain bike rides on Saturdays leaving their Broadwater shop at 10am for a 2 hour ride on the South Downs. Next rides 1 April & 6 May – check website for essential info and other options. They are also looking for volunteers to act as back markers and ride leaders. Pedal Along the Prom, 23 April from 10.30am. Guildcare are raising funds for their Ashdown Centre for children with disabilities and people with dementia. From George V Avenue to Widewater Lagoon, 5 or 10 mile route. Bring packed lunch. Free entry with sponsorship or £5 adult, 50p child. See FB page for info or contact Katie on 01903 528613. Worthing Street Velodrome is back from 30 June to 2 July 2017. You can enjoy all things cycling with three days of summer sunshine on Worthing seafront.

Davison Worthing Youth Concert Band Recruitment Drive: LIVE MUSIC

Want to be in a band? Join now!

Davison Worthing Youth Concert Band is looking for new students to join this active friendly band that enjoy making great music. Now in its 40th year of performing, the band is recruiting school and college aged children from the local community, both boys and girls, who are Grade 2 standard and above. Rehearsals take place every Tuesday evening during term time between 5-6.30pm at Davison C of E High School for Girls. An active social calendar offers a range of opportunities for students joining the band - from performing in a number of formal and informal concerts during the year, social trips to the Albert Hall, bowling and pizza evenings to concert tours. Every year the band performs concerts raising money for local charities, and as a registered charity itself, all funds raised for the band in such events are put towards trips, music and instruments. The band also tour to Europe biannually -past tours have included trips to Spain, Luxembourg, Italy and France (which included a performance in Disneyland!). This year they will perform in Austria. In the non-tour year, residential weekends are run to prepare for a themed showcase concert, with recent performances including ‘The Name’s Bond’ and ‘A Night on Broadway’. The band runs as part of the community work of Davison’s school, hence carry the school name, and answers the regular question of “why are there boys in the Davison Band?!” Davison’s provide rehearsal and storage facilities and ongoing support, Bacon and Co Estate Agents sponsor the band and a parent committee and two conductors give their time to run the band. Musical Director, Karen Kennard, who herself played in the band as a child, told of how she is unsure of its future if new members cannot be recruited soon. “The band suffers a loss of membership

every year as members move on to university. I have been involved with the band for nearly 30 years and feel passionate that it should continue for many years to come, to offer students the opportunities I have enjoyed. Current members clearly share Karen’s passion for the band and the opportunities it offers as she told us that “Many members join at a young age and leave only when they go to university, often coming back throughout their uni years, particularly so they can join in the band tour!” A number of past members have gone on to successful careers, including a Royal Marine Musician and a Head of Music in a Senior School. Hannah, who is now a professional trumpet player said “DWYCB is the perfect organisation if you’re looking for a band who will nurture a young musician. Only now do I realise how well it set me up for further studies in music and subsequently into a career as a professional musician. I have many great memories of some fantastic concerts and tours and I’m still close to a number of my DWYCB friends, twelve years after leaving!” A current band member says being in a band “is great! I’ve got band friends from other schools, who I wouldn’t otherwise have met and we meet socially outside of the band. We play loads of film and theatre music, which I love and the tours are always memorable!” Next performance is on Sunday 30 April from 2-4pm at the Worthing Lido. Why not go and have a listen, and if you’d like to join this friendly band that enjoy making great music – go and have a chat or get in touch now!

For more info, see their FB page, check out www.dwycb.com or contact the band secretary Alison Pereux on 01903 505879.

Giles Robson Band 21 April, 8-10.30pm, doors open 7pm, Southern Pavilion World leading blues harmonica player Giles Robson and his first class band experienced an awesome 2016. The incredible buzz around their dirty sweat down the walls twelve bar road house blues saw them signed to Dutch Major Label V2 Records making them made label mates with such household names as Mumford & Sons, Adele, Simply Red and Skunk Anansie. His debut album, “For those Who Need The Blues” recorded completely live in one session captured the spontaneous dirty and rough blues sound that is gaining Robson and the band rave reviews and stellar audience reactions and the ear of V2 Records.

CHANCE TO WIN

Win 2 tickets to Giles Robson Band

Add to that being spotted by the BBC and booked to headline the Saturday night on the first ever BBC Introducing stage at the massive mainstream Latitude festival then you’ll see that this is THE blues band to watch in 2017.

To enter, just comment and like the competition post on our Facebook page @ Here&NowMagazineWorthing Competition closes midnight Friday 14 April, with the winner selected at random and notified on Saturday 15 April. Good luck!

Think The Red Devils and the Fabulous Thunderbirds mixed with Little Walter and Muddy Waters. This is world class blues in its most dirty, primal, emotional and groovy state. It’s a sound that never fails to rock the house and knock out an audience. As Robson says “This is the sound of a whole band working together as a team.

LIVE MUSIC

The magic of this sound is how it works together so well and almost telepathic connection between all of the band members and the fact that this band’s rhythm section understands how to REALLY groove.” See them live and you’ll witness what the esteemed Bluesmagazine.nl describes as an “Awesome Gig” with a sound that will give you “Goosebumps”. Grab a copy of their album and you’ll enjoy what top UK magazine Blues Matters describes the “Sound and spontaneous feel of blues done right.... when it comes out of the CD player I’ll be putting it on the top shelf alongside the Muddy Waters Band and Lester Butler’s Red Devils” Giles Robson and his band are quite simply on fire. They are on the top of their game and at the top of the blues. Tickets available from worthingpier.co.uk or seetickets.com or at the Southern Pavilion Café. £17.60

Director Paul Verhoeven’ s latest film is both an outrageous black comedy and a deadly psychological thriller. Isabelle Huppert (Amour, 8 Women, Heaven’s Gate) plays a successful businesswoman who gets caught up in a game of cat and mouse as she tracks down the unknown man who raped her. Elle premiered in competition for the Palme d’Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival where it received critical acclaim. It won the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film and Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Huppert’s performance is outstanding, and considered to be one of the finest of her career. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Worthing WOW Presents:

Wish You Were Here Sun 23 April, 12.45pm, Dome Cinema.

Joining him will also be stars Emily Lloyd and Jesse Birdsall.

First Hippo Story Competition Winner: Finley, aged 6

“That is near where I sleep” said Charlie, “did you get them from beside the burrow” said Charlie? Jerry said “yes.”

In our February issue, Here & Now and Worthing Theatres invited young readers to submit a short story. Finlay’s story was selected to win the First Hippo to the Moon book and audio book, kindly provided by Worthing Theatres.

“They are my pants” said Charlie “they are not a hat!” The mystery was solved.

Finlay wrote about a Cheetah named Charlie… Once upon a time there lived a cheetah called “Charlie” he lived in the forest, it was cold especially his bottom. Charlie had no knickers, they were lost! One bright summer morning Charlie woke up. He did not want a cold bottom any more because he lived in the grass which was cold. So Charlie decided to visit his friend Lenny the lion.

Lenny had no sign of Charlie’s knickers. Just then Kerry the kangaroo bounced along the path. Jerry had a new hat, it was spotty and pink. They looked just like Charlie’s knickers. Charlie asked where he got them from? Jerry said he got them from the open meadow near hare’s hole.

Charlie’s bottom was once again warm but Jerry’s head was now cold. The end! Well done Finley, what an excellent story! Thank you to everyone who wrote in. Picture: credit to Worthing Theatres Design Officer, Tom Cooper

Review: ‘Scattered’ A Motionhouse production - Connaught Theatre, 8 March

THEATRE & CINEMA

As a fully paid-up member of the Gobby Musicians Society, and life-long ambassador of the Two-Left Feet Club - notable in my time Dear Readers, for being exceptionally red-faced and lonely at Weddings, Bar Mitzvahs and Funerals - I must admit that I was having serious misgivings about reviewing a modern dance show. But, in the spirit of artistic exploration I thought, and in the hope that I might finally find my missing right foot after all these years, I hobbled on down to the Art Deco wonder that is Worthing’s Connaught Theatre and took my place in Row F amongst a busy and buzzing crowd all ‘waiting for the gift of sound and vision’... For those in the know, Motionhouse are one of the trailblazers of postmodern physical theatre, having been in existence for almost 30 years now under the leadership of Kevin Finnan and Louise Richards, and in that time, they have created a hugely influential body of work that is both critically and commercially successful – which is no mean feat (Boom, Boom) in this day and age. All pretty impressive stuff I thought, as I hastily quizzed Google and Wiki for insight and knowledge about dance as an art form, but what would all that really mean to someone like me who didn’t understand the language of dance, whose preconceptions of dance as being either too highbrow or too lowbrow were forged from watching the occasional BBC2 screening of The Nutcracker at Christmas Time, or from having endured the Second Generation dance troupe swishing about in Brentford Nylons costumes on Saturday night TV in the 1970s…. Hmmm, I thought again; I knew that I was about to have my expectations challenged, but in what way and how…? Finally, the lights dimmed and a hush spread across the theatre. The still, dark tension that just a moments’ pause created, left just enough space in the room for a Massive Attack inspired soundscape to come slowly throbbing through the PA system… And suddenly, against a swathe of blue light, a sole male dancer led us beautifully, silently and expressively into the visceral, conceptual masterpiece that is Scattered. For almost 90 minutes, seven controlled, explosive, powerful, sensitive, descriptive, abstract and perfectly choreographed dancers took us on a breath-taking journey

that explored the theme of ‘Water’ and our relationship as human beings to it. Against the most brilliant of backdrops - utilising a 15 foot high half-pipe like stage set that was both film screen and climbing frame - our perfectly formed protagonists told us their wordless story through the most daring and brave use of a stage set I can recall outside of Cirque du Soleil. Using a unique combination of dance, music, film and physical theatre, Scattered is in essence, a 4 dimensional tone poem about water in all its forms; ice, rain, snow, floods, drought, tiny droplets, rock pools, seas, and waterfalls. It’s thematic with some references to big issues like climate change, but it’s also witty and funny and makes your jaw drop at the same time as making you wish you could just get up there and join in with the dancers. And its seamless integration of film and movement, coupled with an almost Escher like ability to change the audience’s perspective from scene to scene is utterly spell binding and compelling. A quick ‘ask the audience’ session soon confirmed that I was not alone in my thoughts on the evening’s entertainment. Vanessa Pailthorpe-Peart watched with her family - “As with Broken, the show by Motionhouse we saw last year, I was left on the edge of my seat and exhausted - in

a good way! The first moment when one dancer hurled herself down the curved set was jaw-dropping; you could feel people gasp around the theatre. I loved the section where dancers became gecko type creatures - the way they held themselves, crawling across the top of the set it was absolutely clear what they were meant to be.” It’s said that 80% of communication is made through body language. Well, this beautifully dynamic and powerful show was a lexicon of body language expressed through movement and dance that even spoke to a left-footed Luddite like me, and for that I will forever be grateful! On that note, as well as congratulating those seven amazing dancers and the whole creative team behind the show, it would be incredibly remiss of me not to say that Worthing Theatres are to be thoroughly congratulated for bringing cutting-edge entertainment of this quality to our lovely seaside town. Heading out into the night to go home, I realised that there’s a lot more to this body language malarkey than I thought, so I pulled up my collar and tried to walk a little lighter of foot and with a bit more meaning… The Gobby Musician

Hungry for entertainment? THEATRE & CINEMA

Then look no further…

We mocked up a few different designs when putting it together, and this beautiful artwork best represented our upcoming programme, which is full of some incredible family shows including Horrible Histories and We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.

We’ve had some really exciting developments at the theatres recently, from the refurbishment of the Connaught Studio to the release of our Spring-Summer brochure; there is plenty in store for Worthing folk to enjoy. Wrapped around the front and back of our brochure is the iconic Very Hungry Caterpillar,

the classic story was published nearly 50 years ago by Eric Carle in 1969, and I still remember the experience of opening that book as a child. The way the pictures unfolded as the caterpillar devoured everything in its path… and the little hole marks on every page!

I can’t wait to see The Very Hungry Caterpillar brought to life on stage, the show features an incredible 75 puppets, following the journey of a small cute newly hatched bug, which eats and eats and grows and grows until it becomes a very big and very beautiful butterfly. The show actually adapts four of Eric Carle’s stories, and it also includes The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse, Mister Seahorse and The Very Lonely Firefly. Some highlights to look out for in our new season include talks from Michael Parkinson, historian Lucy Worsely and bestselling crime thriller author Peter James, who also brings his latest theatre show Not Dead Enough to the Connaught in June. The Worthing Bypass This column will not change your inner being There is something hypnotic about watching the waves lap against the shore, the steady repetition creating a gentle rhythm that gradually shifts the attention from the seaside to the sea inside as seagull squawks cede to peaceful surrender and an ocean of serenity. Shush... now I’ve bored the bejesus out of you we can get on with the theme of this month’s offering – meditation. Before you stop reading, this column gets funnier the more you read it. I was contemplating things to do in Worthing when you’re dead as spring approaches and found myself doing what comes naturally – heading off to the hills to clear my head and fill it with new bumf. On the way, as the footfall pitter-pattered on the pavement, I fell into a gentle reverie as the monkey-mind melted away and I focused only on the sound of my steps (The Buddha, who knew a thing or two about falling asleep whilst being awake, loved the old monkeymind metaphor – he stole it from a travelling salesman/circus strongman who literally had monkeys jump on his monstrous head due to his hair, all coiled and wiry, resembling monkey nuts. That is not true at all but illustrates how the mind works/ breaks down when anyone mentions the word ‘focus’ or ‘awareness’ as if we’ve got an inbuilt symphony orchestra with each musician playing different tunes simultaneously (a bit like Donald Trump trying to construct a coherent sentence). Anyway, those slight misgivings aside, there is nothing much to walking meditation: ‘focus’ on the footsteps and let all sound and motion fade away (and be careful not to think about suing yours truly when you get run over by a tractor – that is clearly your own fault). * * * I was first inspired to meddle with meditation as a young writer

AND FINALLY...

suffering from what I presumed was writer’s block but turned out to be a series of hangovers. Still, it provided the opportunity to explore inner landscapes in the hope of tapping into a stream of super-consciousness-creativity in the forlorn hope of coming up with a good story. I know, I know, I’m still trying. Supplementing a meagre income by doing a variety of part time jobs, I fell into an unlikely friendship whilst tending bar with a regular who was a trainee priest from New Zealand who, for reasons I never quite discovered, forewent his sheep shearing past to follow the Good Shepherd. Seriously, he used to talk for hours about his shaving prowess with a tear or two hanging perilously over his real ale (they may as well have had dropped in – the ‘real’ ale didn’t really exist back then, as the Beardy Brotherhood from CAMRA will tell you. Back in those days the fake ale tasted like the watered-down slosh it was, London was IRA-Godforsaken grim, whilst Down Under sounded like a sunny utopia before we discovered the Ozone layer didn’t exist). Jesus, he must have been appealing. But my Kiwi compadre did describe a meditative technique taught by an ageing, infamous, alcoholic Catholic legend – a colour technique echoing an approach I had developed whilst under the influence of creative amnesia/a hangover. The drink does indeed giveth as well as taketh awayeth, or whatever it was the gatekeeper said in Macbeth, who let’s face it was as drunk when he said it as Shakespeare was when he wrote it. It may have been coincidence that I had stumbled upon something the house of God bet their house on but I realised that someone had to make this stuff up. So began a lifetime’s pursuit of

finding alternative ways to say the same thing wiser people said but in a slightly arcane, goofily existential way so as to convince them that I knew something they didn’t, which in all fairness would be seen through by anyone with a sprinkling of intelligence. * * * Which brings us nicely to the other point about meditation – letting loose of the self, dying a little and giving the great beyond a go (no I don’t mean taking the bus to Bogner). Like anything else, it’s worth trying yourself, and if it works, saying you invented it (nobody reads the Ubiquitous Hack apart from people you wouldn’t want to mix with, so you’ll be fine). Find a beach, a pier, or even a pavement in the street – I’m sure all of the aforementioned exist somewhere in or around Worthing – and take a stroll into yourself. If it works anything like as well as it did for this old fool, you’ll laugh yourself silly at yourself. If it doesn’t, well, the views are awe inspiring: you are doing things in Worthing before you’re dead after all.
