the Here & Now listings – here’s just a snapshot of what’s happening in August.

YES, THE GREAT SUMMER CELEBRATION of art continues. After the success of both the Worthing Children’s Parade with their stunning mobile sculptures and the Artists Open Houses art trail enjoyed by hundreds of local people and visitors alike, we want to keep up the enthusiasm!

Just for the taking, there is street art above FEAST in Warwick Street, and more hidden just around the corner. If you haven’t yet seen this year’s ‘Art on the Pier’, then stroll along and be proud – this is all locally produced, full of variety and fascinating.

There’s so much to see and do this month, it is hard to know where to start; but why not kick off with new art at Colonnade House, on the corner of Warwick Street? The door stands open to welcome you in, so that you can watch the creation of graffiti art at the ‘4 Elements Exhibition’ 3-5 August and from 8 August, engage with ‘Alphabetown’, an interactive work by the illustrator Sarah Edmonds. FREE!

While you are on the pier, you can take a long look at the stunning wall art livening up the front of the multi-storey car park (it’s livening up discussion too!) Check out the art in the underpass at the top of Chapel Road, and keep your eyes peeled for the Dippy the Dino trail, featured in various venues and ready for you to join in, FREE!

Up the street at the Worthing Museum and Art Gallery, you can still catch the stunning ‘Isolation Chamber Vacation’ exhibition we profiled last month, FREE! And look out for the new exhibition ‘Inspired by the Downs’, launching 19 August. FREE!

Lighting up The Town Get ready for the Worthing Light Festival, down at East Beach Studios, 8-10 September; another creative arts event in our town, and, astonishingly, FREE!

Fun at the Festivals People have been getting creative all over town. The numerous festivals, Fun Days and music events bring out the talent like sunshine brings out the flowers; costumes and decorations, placards and bunting, posters and programmes – they’re all produced to catch our eye. What is going to draw you in this summer? A look at our listings leaves me amazed - Worthing goes festival crazy!

photographed in Valencia. I loved the print and the process so much, I carried on. Dippy the Dino was born!

HERE & NOW CAUGHT UP WITH ED WATTS, local photographer and picture framer, who tells us how his love of Worthing & dinosaurs led to the Trail.

I have since portrayed Dippy, who originally resided in the Natural History Museum in London, investigating many iconic places in Worthing and the surrounding areas. Dippy the Dino has now taken on a life of his own – with a ‘Dippy The Dino Trail’ around town!

H&N: Why Worthing Ed? Ed: I moved to Worthing 4 years ago and haven’t looked back since! It’s the only place I’ve ever really felt a part of the community. H&N: Why Dino’s? Ed: By trade I’m a photographer and bespoke picture framer, but after my wife Sophie developed a love for screenprinting, I thought I’d give it a go. On the second day of my course, I produced a print of a life-sized animatronic Diplodocus that I’d

When we moved here, we really enjoyed getting to know Worthing’s burgeoning art scene and cultural heritage. Dippy’s decision to live in Worthing presented a great opportunity for him to get to know this amazing town in the same way we had. H&N: Tell us about the Trail Competition Ed: The trail takes the form of ten screenprints showing Dippy’s search for companionship and love. One

screenprint is shown at each of 10 venues in Worthing. There’s a question about each screenprint: answer all the questions to be in with a chance to win PRIZES! 1st prize is a one-off screenprint, where the winner can star in their own Dippy print - they can even help to print it! We’ve teamed up with an eclectic mix of venues and I hope this encourages an eclectic mix of people to follow the trail and maybe experience something or

somewhere new. This trail couldn’t have happened without many generous sponsors and venues, including Here & Now, getting behind this project. It’s great to know there are so many forward thinking people in Worthing. To enter the competition: Pick up a leaflet, available at all participating venues and around town. will be on the beach opposite their studios, lit up by sustainable energy. The lights will be there for 48

hours non stop. Fire eaters will add to the occasion on Friday night, along with music for all the family to enjoy. There’s even some midnight feasts to hand out to children on the first night, so get there for 9pm to make sure you don’t miss out! Artists were invited to submit their work to be included in the Festival. The best installation in the under 16 and over 16 categories will be awarded by a great team of judges: Ali Lapper, Harvey Lonsdale (age 11) Pauline Cory, David Freud and Mayor Alex Harman. Jessica Gill, one of the organisers of this free event gave thanks

to WSCC & Worthing Borough Council for providing funds that have made the event possible and a big thank you to Kate’s Cakes and I Love Candy for donating cakes and sweets. The artists at East Beach Studios are doing this for a bit of fun, to give everyone the chance to enjoy this lovely stretch of beach throughout the night and day with stunning art sculptures. The East Beach area is a magnet already with the volley ball, paddle boards, childrens’ playground, fountains and the brand new sandpit. WHAT A FANTASTIC DAY!

10th Worthing Children’s Parade 2017: A CELEBRATION OF ANYTHING JULIA DONALDSON stories were vividly represented in an explosion of colour and sound.

Julia Catherine Donaldson MBE is an English writer, playwright and performer, and the 2011–2013 Children’s Laureate. CROWDS OF CHILDREN, PARENTS AND TEACHERS took part in the 10th Worthing Children’s Parade in June, the event that launches Worthing Artists Open Houses.

Julia Donaldson MBE attended the parade as guest of honour and, once again, the parade joined forces with Worthing Museum & Art Gallery and Worthing Library to offer readings and art workshops based on Ms Donaldson’s fantastic books. The art made at these workshops and inspired by the readings, along with some of the ‘Big Makes’ from the parade, will be exhibited in the Garden room at Worthing Museum & Art Gallery over the summer months.

The air thrummed with the sound of school samba bands, whistles and the laughter of children. A record nineteen schools took part, having spent many weeks hard at work on their ‘Big Makes’ to create amazing mobile sculptures from willow, tough construction paper, imagination and paint, each one light enough to be carried by the children but sturdy enough to withstand the wind.

Event Organiser Caroline Woodward said: “I wanted this year’s parade to be a real celebration of

This year’s theme was ‘Anything Julia Donaldson’ and Characters from ‘The Gruffalo’, ‘Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book’, and many more

children’s love of art and literature and we are so lucky to have such a talented author coming to our event. The linked arts events and

workshops, both in the lead up to the parade and after, help grow the dynamic arts scene in Worthing, developing opportunities for both children and adults to take part. I feel humbled by the commitment, hard work, and dedication of schools, staff and parents. Thank you.” The theme for 2018 is ‘Harry Potter:

Witches, Wizards, Fantastic Beasts and Anything in Between’ The parade welcomes any school or community organisation that works with children, so if you’d like to be involved please visit worthingchildrensparade. co.uk Facebook or email theworthingchildrensparade@ gmail.com

BUSINESS FEATURE

Keep Cool in your Conservatory this Summer ONE OF THE GREAT JOYS OF SUMMER, for conservatory owners, is being able to sit in the conservatory and enjoy the garden. However, once the sun comes out, for many of us, our conservatoires morph themselves into mini ovens which make them unbearable to sit in during the summer months. There are lots of different ways to keep cool in the summer, but how do you know what’s the right option? Here at Green Space Conservatory Roofs, we help our customers to enjoy their conservatory – whatever the weather.

How Do We Do That? In 2010 the planning laws were relaxed and in the majority of cases, you can now fit a solid roof to your conservatory without planning permission. This means better insulation, keeping the room warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer,

and a room that you can use all year round. We replace conservatory roofs with roof panels that are lightweight and offer eight times better insulation than a polycarbonate roof. With U-values of 0.29, they will keep your conservatory at a pleasant temperature all year round meaning that even at the height of summer, you will be able to sit comfortably in your conservatory. What’s more, the panels are manufactured to measure off site, so installation generally takes less than a day, and we always aim to ensure that your roof conversion is as non-disruptive as possible. We are the sole supplier of this system in the South, our system is compatible with most conservatories, old and new - plus it comes with a ten year guarantee. For more information and for a FREE quote, contact us today on 01903 322004 or visit us online at www.greenspaceconservatories.co.uk

MY COMMUNITY MATTERS

Community Project at St Paul’s VAW HAS MANY HUNDREDS OF MEMBERS and many more stakeholders – but none in my humble opinion, quite as beautiful as St Paul’s – run by a team of dedicated volunteers, a local charity called the St Paul’s Centre Worthing Community Project. I am sure many of you have strong and endearing memories of St Paul’s Church, positioned in the very heart of sunny Worthing, a beautiful Grade 2 listed building on Chapel Road. My memories are based on attending various church services over the years as a Davison Girl. Now as partnerships manager at Voluntary Action Worthing, each week, I provide a drop-in on a Wednesday between 10.30 and 4pm in St Paul’s which is open to any local, not-for-profit organisation needing support or signposting. St Paul’s has moved on too and provides a very different space as a vibrant community hub, with

a café and bar and an exciting schedule of diverse events and live music, all in a stunning & unique setting. St Paul’s welcomes visitors from all walks of life, a place to relax with friends and family – a truly inter-generational space hosting some amazing art, and even a church service on a Sunday! You may recall St Paul’s nearly closed a few years ago, but the community rallied round and St Paul’s adopted a new function.

What’s not to like I hear you ask? Well, the volunteers who run the charity think that it could be even better - for you, the Worthing community. Earlier this year, Voluntary Action Worthing and St Paul’s agreed to work together in a strategic partnership to identify how the space could be better used and to apply for grant funding to adapt the space based upon the needs of YOU, the local community. A consultation exercise started with the voluntary sector in

March, and now it’s your turn to have a voice! Win a fantastic meal for four at the beautiful St Paul’s by completing our on-line survey today! To feedback your thoughts, and be in with a chance to win a fantastic prize of lunch for four at St Paul’s, complete our short on-line survey: www. surveymonkey.co.uk/r/JZ88KZZ or pop into St Paul’s Centre and complete a paper survey before 20 August whilst you tuck into some fabulous food…

A Platform for Young People GETTING TO KNOW YOU This month we feature ESTEEM, a local charity that provides a platform for young people to help themselves. WHY IS THERE A NEED? ESTEEM was set up by Val Vizor, Chief Officer Cat’s mum, over 8 years ago to provide a platform for young people aged 14-26 years to help themselves on their journey to achieving employment and their own, true life goals. Volunteer opportunities and projects are designed to challenge participants so they can identify, develop and work towards their goals. Volunteer Woody, aged 22, says “It gives me a reason, something to do every day, I get up early in the morning to come here. I am now the Office and Project Assistant and help run errands, answer

the phone etc. The opportunity has helped me to develop new skills.” As well as ESTEEM’s twice weekly Drop In on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6-8pm, there’s also regular climbing sessions and our mentoring scheme that recruits and trains mentors from the community, matching them with young people to support them in identifying and following their aspirations. We’ve also just launched a new project called Supper Club run in partnership with Southern Housing.

How can people get involved and help your organisation to do more? We’ve just been awarded Big Lottery’s Reaching Communities grant of over £330,000 over the next 4 years, so it’s a really exciting time to get involved! As a growing organisation with lots going on, we are keen to invite members of the

Shoreham and wider Adur and West Sussex communities to get involved. Volunteering at ESTEEM means you can make a real difference at our charity while learning new skills, making friends and being a valued member of a team. We are also currently looking for Trustees to join the organisation to help lead and shape things during this exciting phase. Chief Officer, Cat Vizor, says: “It’s a really exciting time here at ESTEEM and we’d love for Shoreham and greater Adur and West Sussex residents to come aboard and join us, whether it be through volunteering, mentoring or becoming a trustee. Come in for a cup of tea and a chat” If you are interested please either pop in to the Esteem office at the Old School House on Ham Road, Shoreham or email admin@esteem.org.uk to express your interest.

DADIFESTO

Money for nothing and your kids go free WITH THE SUMMER HOLIDAY UPON US, we have seven long weeks to create entertainment for the nippers. Although this is great fun, it is, for the most part, blooming expensive. Sun cream, ice cream, buckets, spades, clubs, passports and God know what else, it all adds up to a pretty penny. So, this got me thinking, kids today have it far too easy. In the 70’80’s when we were kids, we had to make our own entertainment. You’d be out with your mates from the morning to teatime, with only your imagination to fuel the long days. If you managed to be in your mum’s good books when the ding-dong of the ice cream van came around, then you’d consider it a right result. So how about this. If I told you that I’d come up with some ideas that you can entertain the kids with but also help you save and even make a few quid, then you’d think I was some kind of twisted genius, wouldn’t you, eh? - Well oh ye of little faith, pull up a chair.

Five Golden Ideas To Help You Make The Summer Holidays Profitable. YOU CAN BANKSY ON IT: Raid the shed for any leftover pots of paint. Pack up the kids in the middle of the night, pop down to Teville Gate and create a huge mural about some relevant political issues or other. Actually, go one better and create a grainy video of them in action.

…out with your mates from morning to teatime, with only your imagination to fuel the long days... Stick on a bit of ‘Massive Attack’ in the background, to make it more authentic. When you are done, phone the papers and tell them you’ve

will thank you for. Chanel 5 will buy the rights and you will most probably get a book deal as your new position as a radical thinking child psychologist rockets.

Rather than allowing your kids to eat all the goodies they’ve gathered (What am I a monster?). No, set up a stall, and launch a ‘Pic & Mix’ and flog them at a mightily inflated margin. With Woolworth’s no more than a distant memory, there is a massive call for this to happen.

discovered a new Banksy. When the reporters hit the town in their droves, explain they can watch the video for a pound. Then grab a hammer, dismantle the mural and get the kids selling it to the highest bidder. Bingo! Loadofdosh and a big thank you from Worthing Council for thinking of a clever way to get rid of a massive eyesore. BUG OFF: Dig for worms and bugs, stick them all in glass vases - Open up a ‘Bug Safari’ and charge people to come in and see them. Or, if you are so inclined you could start a protection racket and offer ‘insurance’ to mums that none of the creepy crawlies will be allowed to come home with their kids. SOUND AS A POUND: Gather up all the noise making instruments you can lay your hands on, grab the kids and head down to the middle of town, and proceed to conduct the orchestra in a medley of classic hits. Two things could happen. A). You could discover that one of your offspring is actually the new ‘Ed Sheeran’ and as such you are now set for life from the royalty payments. B). The kids make so much racket, that they attract a huge crowd and the grateful nearby retailers offer you a mega buckets contract to perform there on a weekly basis. TRICK QUESTION: Now, traditionally Trick or Treating has taken place on 31 October but rules are there to be broken. So don’t delay. Get the kids to slap on some makeup and hit the streets with big buckets ready to gather huge mouthfuls of liquorice all-sorts that will be handed over.

LITTLE BROTHER: Invite a load of the most obnoxious and attention seeking kids from your child’s class round to your house, jack them up on cheap orange squash then set up a range of cameras and live stream it (After locking all the doors and retreating to the safety on the shed). Then live tweet the goings on as it descends into some toddler-sized ‘Lord Of The Flies’. This might, on the face of it, seem exploitative and reminiscent of a freakshow from a banned circus of the past, but it is, in fact, a perfectly legitimate social experiment, for which the world

So there you have it, five utterly foolproof ways of making your summer holidays go with a bang. If you’d like to thank me, then mine’s a half a Top Deck shandy. Until next time, keep it real, keep em peeled’ and keep on keepin’ on.

Self-Publishing Plunge WORTHING HAS A FANTASTIC LITERARY HERITAGE: Shelley, Byron, Austen, Wilde, Priestley all came here and were inspired by our beautiful seaside town. We want to celebrate the past as well as invest in encouraging our writers of the future. We give feedback and support to aspiring writers and often get asked

how to get published. So, this month, we thought we’d share a few tips on the business of self-publishing. Here are 5 top tips to consider before you take the self-publishing plunge.

1) WHO?: First, ask yourself who is your intended audience? Do you want your book to be read by close friends and family only, or would you like it to be seen by the wider reading public? How will you market your book? Decide on this and your route to publish will become more clear. 2) Why you should avoid using friends to proof read: Because friends

are notorious for being friends! They won’t want to upset you by pointing out the errors. Obviously, if your chosen

friend is a published writer or better still, an editor, (lucky you!) you need have no worries on that score.

Grant Langley

3) POD: If you want to see your book in paperback, the most cost-effective way is to publish with a print-on-demand service such as CreateSpace (Amazon). They will guide you through the process of making your book look as good as it can, and this service is free. You will receive a royalty for every book you sell, and Amazon will take its own cut. You can buy copies for yourself and your friends at list price from Amazon (and get the royalty) or buy ‘author copies’ which are cheaper, but you have to factor in the cost of delivery from the USA.

4) Research: If you wish to print a large number of copies, do some research. There are, sadly, a lot of people out there willing to part you from your money while offering a second rate service. General advice would be to go with a well-known company and do your homework before you make any decisions.

5) Digital publishing : Digital publishing through Amazon is free via Kindle Direct. They pay generous royalties, as much as

Boys and girls from the ages of 5 to 16 can enjoy and reap the rewards from learning a sport that brings people together through its foundations based on teamwork and communication. Whether your child enjoys playing in the park with friends or has been given the opportunity to play on a more advanced level with one of the local development centres such as Worthing or Brighton there are opportunities out there for all levels of player. Good quality football coaching is about bringing the best out of each individual player and celebrating their successes, whether it be receiving a trophy for being the most improved player or participating in a local tournament.

In an increasingly digital world, where it can sometimes seem hard to keep your child engaged and active, football can provide a healthy and welcome release from screens and gaming. It can give them a chance to enjoy getting fit in all weathers as they strive to reach their goals. The enjoyment football brings also extends to the adults on the side lines who can watch their children achieve with pride. I know this as I’m one of those parents!

HIP-HOP CULTURE

4 Elements Exhibition INTERVIEW with Dave Taylor We caught up with Dave Taylor who runs Get it Together to find out about an exciting exhibition that is happening this summer in Worthing. What is the lowdown on Get it Together and your exhibition? I set Get it Together up at the beginning of the year with my partners John Paul Jenner and Tristan Forshaw; we promote events and artists that celebrate Hip Hop culture. The 4 Elements Exhibition, is an extension of this and is taking place at Colonnade House from 3-5 August. The exhibition is a vibrant display of graffiti art, live music and DJ performance plus breakdance displays and street dance workshops for children hosted by TotRockinBeats.

What inspired you to hold the event? I wanted to turn my fanatic love of Hip Hop culture into an event that would be open for the public to enjoy free of charge. Luckily for me, Clare Halstead at Colonnade House believed in my vision, and it has transformed from a scribble in my notebook to reality.

Who is featuring at the event? The artwork is from resident artists SeaSpray Worthing. Music is provided by our DJ’s Trick and Jenzle. We have live performances from a range of local talent including the boom bap beats of the Jezter and Yeti, to the soulful vocals of Mei and the storytelling style of our host MC Boudicca Pepper.

How is the event funded? The event, which is free of charge, is funded by the Worthing and Adur Commit to Culture Small Commissions Grant and Worthing Community Chest. The exhibition would not have been possible without the help from these wonderful organisations along with our sponsors Giuseppes Lite and the Craft Ale company, Anchored In Worthing.

…and it has transformed a scribble in my notebook to reality... What else do people need to know? Please contact us via our Facebook page @GetitTogetherWorthing to register your children for the street dance workshops. Please be aware that spaces are strictly limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. The workshops take place on Saturday 5 August at 1pm & 3pm. FREE

HIP-HOP CULTURE

Peace, Unity, Love & Having Fun THE DATE 13 AUGUST 1973.

The address 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, the Bronx. It was a party organised in the recreation room of an inner city high-rise by brother and sister team Cindy and 16 years old, Clive Campbell. Innocent enough eh? except this moment is now cast in stone as the time and place when ‘Hip-Hop’ started. The origins came long before as of course, kids have been tagging their names and slogans on buildings since KillRoy was a boy in the Caveman era. DJs have been making people dance since the invention of the Gramophone. MCs have been rapping on Jamaican sound systems for decades. Could anyone attending that party have imagined that Hip-Hop would become a worldwide phenomenon and a multi-billion dollar a year industry. To get a flavour of the very early days, pop on to Netflix and check out ‘The Getdown’. I fell in love with Hip-Hop in ‘83 when it burst out of TV screens. The Top 40 countdown started to shake when the likes of Grandmaster Melle ‘The Message’ and ‘Hey You The Rocksteady Crew’ played. When ex-Sex Pistols mystro Malcolm McLaren package it up in

Father & Son Hip-Hoppers Kim & Terry Slade

the Buffalo Gals video, we had it there all in one. ‘Rap is something you do, Hip-Hop is something you live’ KRS-ONE Hip Hop was an explosion of colour that hit us firmly between the eyes. Suddenly Dads’ garages where being hit for spray paint, lino was lifted from kitchens and taken on to the precinct by kids to practice spinning on their heads, backs, shins and chins. Parents and older siblings record players were being used for scratching practice. And kids up and down the country started dressing in tracksuits and talking to each other in secretive slang. They said it was a fad that would be forgotten about; instead it just grew and grew and grew.

That should put a sock in the mouth of any non-believers out there who

SEASPRAY WORTHING was conceived by two graffiti writers, Bobby Hopkins 29 & Ed Collinson 27, who moved to the town in 2015 and noticed a distinct lack of urban art. Seizing the moment and utilising a background from the tattoo and graffiti world, they built a business as a spray-paint retailer and artists-forhire. Now they keep busy with regular commissions for a wide variety of clients from bedroom murals to largescale music festivals.

Hip Hop in 2017

We brought in highly respected graffiti artist Neo, to catch up with them to find out more about what they do and the burgeoning street art scene in the town.

So where are we now? The days of the beer guzzling swagger of the Beastie Boys. The conscious, thought-provoking raw power of Public Enemy and the upbeat Queens New York bravado of Run DMC rocking the three stripes may be a hazy memory but rest assured; Hip-Hop blood runs thick in the veins of the underground and mainstream music scenes. Closer to home, underground artists include Worthing’s very own Nelson Navarro who flips from a thoughtful, mellow flow in the studio to an energetic flair when hosting Hip Hop jams on stage.

presumed that the scale of HipHop as an art form was restricted to the size of MC Hammer’s baggy trousers.

Writing on the Wall? It’s so Much More

I stopped Breakin’ years ago. My days of tagging are long gone but memories remain in my heart and I consider myself to be an Ageing B-Boy for life. 34 years later, I am still in love with Hip-Hop and I intend to share this love with my children.

And if you like your Hip Hop with a dose of nostalgia then you can always rely on Sussex based

DJ Format and his accomplice Abdominal with their unique blend of matter of fact lyrics laced over breaks and samples funky enough to make any dancefloor shake.

Neo: So chaps, how did you get into Graffiti? Bobby: I lived in London where two of my older cousins were part of a large graffiti crew. Then, after moving from Hackney to Hastings, I noticed a distinct lack of graffiti and took an opportunity to make a name for myself. Although in day to day life I don’t like being the centre of attention, graffiti gave me an alternative identity which gave me a buzz like no other as the alias gained attention.

Ed: During my school years I took

to art, but in a stage of teenage rebellion, I decided I wanted to approach it my own way without the limits of the school curriculum or following convention. We both share an approach to graffiti which takes influences from outside the urban art scene.

Neo: Do you feel that graffiti and Hip Hop culture are positive things for young people to engage in? Ed: This is the core reasoning behind our workshops, which are aimed at young people. We believe that any activity which sparks creativity and individuality should be encouraged in young people’s lives. Neo: What is your view on there being public spaces for graffiti in your local area; are there enough? Unfortunately, the local graffiti scene is very slow in its evolution in comparison to places like Brighton, London, Portsmouth and Southampton. Slowly, more projects have been approved such as the recent upgrade of the Grafton Carpark on the seafront. We hope this can help the scene develop especially as there are many talented artists locally such as Aroe, Niser, and Will Blood.

50 Sides of Worthing VIVA LA VANDAL CONTINUING OUR SERIES of ‘50 Sides Of Worthing’ where we pin down some of the more eclectic faces that make up this sunny town of ours, this month we got hold of worldwide Graffiti Art legend and long time resident ‘Aroe’.

Neo: Where would you like to see opened up as a gallery? Ed: Teville Gate could make a good space for a gallery and it would be good to see a positive use of the space. However, an open graffiti wall would be more welcome and beneficial than a gallery. Neo: Do you think that there is a lack of understanding and appreciation of graffiti as an art form? Absolutely, however, the ‘acceptability’ of graffiti art has grown tremendously due to big names in the street art world crossing into advertising, art galleries and even huge fashion brands. ‘The understanding element is the same as any cultural movement – Research and commitment lead to a broader understanding and involvement in the scene’. This also challenges the often negative opinions that have been cast towards the art form.

‘Basically, the world wouldn’t have the ‘legal’ or tolerated forms without foundation in illegal street/train tagging in the earliest stages which is a big contradiction for many outside of the graffiti culture’.

Worthing might not be widely known as a hotbed of radical thinking, but scratch under the surface and you will find all manner of everyday people doing extraordinary things, Aroe is one of them.

Neo: So, for those inspired to pick up some spray cans and start painting What advice would you give them?

If you could bring something extinct back to life, what would you choose? British Rail. Who would play you in the film of your life? Idris Alba. Which piece of music changed your life? ‘The message’ by Melle Mel because nothing would ever sound as different as that did the first day I heard it. What did you want to be when you were growing up? An artist, I never wanted to be anything else. What is at the top of your bucket list? Make a beat for Pusha T or Joell Ortiz.

Ed: Visit legalgraffitiwalls.net and look up where your nearest designated graffiti wall is. Make contact with a local artist such as ourselves, we offer one to one and group workshops and are happy to give ad hoc advice. If you are not ready to take those steps just yet then there are some great graffiti tutorials on YouTube.

What is your guiltiest pleasure? 90’s RnB or So solid crew.. Who would you invite to rave with you on Worthing beach? I’m not massively into partying because I feel socially awkward, but I’d like to have dinner with Louis Farrakhan, Monica Bellucci, Stevie Wonder or the guy that gave the internet away for free.

Bobby and Ed can be seen live in action at Colonnade House, in Warwick St on 5 August as part of the 4 Elements Exhibition, 3-5 August. For info on SeaSpray Instagram - @ seasprayworthing / facebook.com/ seasprayworthing

Many shall know, and if they don’t, all they need do is take a look around. Why Worthing? I needed a house and couldn’t afford Brighton. A decision I don’t regret. When were you happiest? What’s the worst job you’ve ever had? Unloading tyres, working constant night shifts in a dairy or my hideous brief spell working in the now defunct Threshers

What single thing would you do to improve Worthing? Break the grip of the conservatives then I’d bulldoze the bowling alley and car park so a cohesive seafront could be built. Then turn Teville gate into apocalyptic theme park with very minor investment. What would you donate to Worthing Museum? It’d be up to my kids. What event did you last pay to go to in Worthing? The Family Stone on the Pier.

THOMAS H GREEN’S MUSICAL TIME MACHINE

Phun City Festival

LP HARTLEY’S 1953 NOVEL ‘THE GO-BETWEEN’ famously opens with the line, “The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.” The phrase was never more apt than looking back at Phun City Festival, which took place on Ecclesdon Common, near Patching, between Friday 24th and Sunday 26th July 1970.

Hell’s Angels who help themselves to the bar whenever they fancy? Or where festival-goers decide to stay on afterwards to form a temporary hippy micro-state? Such was the way of things at Phun City.

It was a time when the counterculture was in its pomp, when blurred utopian ideals of anarchy, LSD and personal freedom held glorious sway among the

The idea first cropped up one cheerfully stoned evening at underground musician/writer Mick Farren’s Maida Vale pad, with his Finnish girlfriend, Ingrid von Essen, cartoonist Edward Barker and others. They took the idea to the popular underground

young and young-headed. Who could imagine a 21st Century festival where a badly typewritten newsletter circulated among the crowd informing that, “Acidheads from Brighton recognised at least 10 plainclothes police in the audience last night… keep your eyes open, they’re mostly working in couples and can be dangerous.”? Or where the security’s overseen by

zine IT and posited it as a fund-raiser. IT bit and Farren found backers, even nailing down the first ever European date by Detroit ‘White Panther’ proto-punks The MC5, of ‘Kick Out The Jams’ fame. Farren knew the Worthing area as he’d attended the local boys grammar school, and persuaded local farmer J Fitzroy Somerset to lease him a field for £1500.

of making a ‘Woodstock’style film.

Unfortunately, a couple of weeks before the event, West Sussex County Council placed an injunction on it. They withdrew it 10 days later but the damage was done and the festival’s backers pulled out. Undeterred, the decision was taken to go ahead, propped up by money from Ronan O’Rahilly (who’d owned the then-defunct pirate station, Radio Caroline), with the vague idea

Worthing, at the time, had a thriving countercultural scene, with regular concerts by acts such as Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Cream, and Black Sabbath, as well as a local arts lab who persuaded Deep Purple to come and play a benefit for them. Such people were persuaded to pitch up in the woods near the festival and assist in its construction in return for food vouchers, alongside lysergic nomads from around the country. In his autobiography, ‘Give The Anarchist a Cigarette’, Mick Farren refers to the forest-dwelling Phun City hardcore as “boggies” (“a Neanderthal form of hippy”) building their own Narnia. They certainly existed on not much. The writer John May was among the Worthing countercultural vanguard and recalls, “A lot of acid went round in pill form on a dinner plate in the woodland.” His memories chime with many others, in that food was thin on the ground but hash and acid plentiful. However, wasted as everyone was, under the watchful eye of Pink Fairies roadie ‘Boss’ Goodman, they managed, en masse, to bodily carry the entire stage across the site since it had originally been built dangerously close to some powerlines.

…Worthing had a thriving countercultural scene, with regular concerts by acts such as Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Cream, and Black Sabbath...

Of the Hell’s Angels, it depends who you believe. The local

papers, The Worthing Herald and Worthing Gazette, were keen to write of bikers bullishly patrolling the site “sporting studded leather jackets, some carrying motorcycle chains” and referring to them as “thugs” who “roughed up the hippies”. However, anecdotes related by festival-goers are more positive, although reports of them nicking copious booze from the bar and burning the site’s polka-dotted, giant mushroom art sculptures as firewood, appear to be true. The local press were also keen to emphasise the importance of “the Jesus Tent”, and links with local churches. They did not report that this tent was briefly taken over by the festival’s poetry line-up, whose venue was never erected. Thus narcotic writing legends William Burroughs and Alex Trocchi, and anarchist art maverick Jeff Nuttall, held forth until outraged Christians objected and a tussle ensued. Burroughs, clad in a leather great coat, collapsed in a corner due to his excesses and was carried, comatose, to the medical tent to be revived. Bands were told the financial situation on arrival and offered the opportunity to play for expenses and “a good time”. Most accepted this, in the spirit of the era, although the inappropriately named Free turned it down and drove away. The MC5 performed a ballistic set on Sunday night, by all accounts, despite rain falling heavily on the previously sunny event. Other highlights included the Edgar Broughton Band, who turned ‘Out, Demons’ Out’ into a half hour jam, assisted by Kevin Ayers; Mungo Jerry, who jovially dismissed their own monster hit, ‘In The Summertime’ and didn’t play it; and The Pink Fairies, who, after asking why the audience weren’t stripping naked and “being free”, did so themselves. Other musical attractions included Mighty Baby, Third Ear Band, Michael Chapman, Cochise and Demon Fuzz, although it’s unclear

if Gerry Rafferty and pre-fame Billy Connelly’s folk band The Humblebums made it. Many who attended had as much fun hanging out in the Fairground inflatable dome, 100 feet across and 50 feet high, boasting lightshows, jammed music, films such as ‘Fahrenheit 451’, and vast quantities of all-night marijuana smoking. At some point seminal Middle Earth/UFO DJ Jeff Dexter span some tunes, meanwhile era-defining zines such as IT, Oz and Friends also had a presence. An event that many remember, and which was reported in the local press, was when a small group of plainclothes police were pointed out from the stage. Festival attendees roundly abused and chivvied them until they left. Originally conceived as an event for 20,000, Phun City was eventually attended by around 3000, most of whom were hardcore heads. So much so that a few hundred decided to stay in the woods afterwards and wait it out until the Isle of Wight Festival at the end of August. Worthing’s local Old Bill, having none of it, went in mob-handed and evicted them. Phun City was not the first free festival, but it was a small milestone in countercultural history and, as one of the local papers put it at the time, “the biggest thing that has ever happened in Worthing.” Now that our local outsider art scene is gathering pace, perhaps we should see that as a challenge. Phun City 2017, anyone?

Thomas would like to thank John May, the late Mick Farren and www.ukrockfestivals.com for their help. This article was previously published in the Action Zine.

THEATRE LISTINGS

An Interview with Poppy AN INTERVIEW WITH POPPY BURTONMORGAN, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF METTA THEATRE INTERVIEWER: STEPHEN SHELDRAKE Could you tell me more about Metta Theatre and the style of work you produce? I founded the company 12 years ago with my boyfriend William Reynolds - who is my husband now! Our main mission is to create work with a strong visual aesthetic using a variety of art forms. We combine circus, opera, puppetry, street-dance, video projections... every show is different. We do this because we want to reimagine existing stories in a contemporary way.

How has it been adapting a well-known story like Jungle Book and transitioning that on stage into a family circus show? It felt natural, the circus elements were easy to integrate because the animalistic characteristics translate well, animals are inherently acrobatic. This version of the Jungle Book is a contemporary, urban, real world, human adaptation. Each character has their own movement style and role in our society, which was really fascinating to explore especially through this visual medium.

What do you love most about being an Artistic Director for such a vibrant company? It’s amazing. Whatever I dream up we can do it, with the limitations of buildings of course! A seed of an idea can grow into a spectacular show, you decide what art form feels right for the story and create visual metaphors from there, what I love about circus in particular is its ability to unlock a story in a visual and poetical metaphor, seeing this unfold is brilliant. It’s all part of the fun!

Your favourite moment from the Jungle Book?

SAT 19 AUGUST PAVILION THEATRE

August 2017 Sat 19 August

A double hoop duet. It’s such a beautiful moment, the rest of the show is full of high energy, but this part is suspended in time. The two characters are outcasts in society, and this moment explores their isolation, as they share this hoop together suspended in the air.

What makes this production so appealing to both children and adults? For children, the visuals of stunning circus combined with street-dance, and the story is so well known and easy to follow. But it’s also specifically targeted to adults too; the subtext is rich in complexity. It is a political commentary on society, on identification and where we feel we belong, this exploration is deep and profound. The physicality of the performers alone is a joy to watch, combined with all of the other elements it creates a magnificent experience for all audiences.

What do you think of Summer of Circus in Worthing? It’s really flattering to be alongside some of the best companies in the industry, on a national and international scale. A lot of what we do is key to audience development, and building a new audience from scratch like this festival is doing is really exciting. The people that attend contemporary circus love it, and are hooked for life! Jungle Book is a great entry point for all ages as it’s such a gorgeous blend of genres and opens you up to a new and exciting world, in a much loved story that we all recognise, with an exciting urban twist. Weird British Sports? STACKSTEADS IN LANCASHIRE has their annual Gravy Wrestling and Ramsbottom has the World Black Pudding Throwing Championship. In Worthing, we’ve never been the types to chuck about meat based products, but until recently, we enjoyed throwing ourselves off a pier and trying to fly. The Worthing Birdman was a quintessentially British contest that is now sadly missing from our Worthingite calendar. But what to fill that feather-edged hole with? Well, unsurprisingly, I have an idea. No, it’s not Bard Man of Worthing (though this is a fantastic idea that can be utilised in future), my idea is much simpler:

The Finalist of the Year Contest Okay, maybe it’s not that simple. Basically, anyone can enter the Finalist of the Year Contest. They enter with whatever they think will win the competition. You are not told what the criteria for winning is, only the judges will know. You can do literally anything. And at the end, someone will be crowned Finalist of the Year. It’s weird. It’s confusing. It’s tongue in cheek. It’s British. And it could be all ours, if only we’d give it a chance. So there’s your Bardic Trial for this month. How would you win that already (since the last paragraph) coveted Finalist of the Year Trophy, Chequebook and Pen?

THE WORTHING BYPASS

This column will not change your holiday plans THE PROSPECT OF SUMMER in the big city melts the hearts of seaside dwellers; the cursed misfortune of insufficient air conditioning on the underground offering scant relief from the fumefiltered sun rays sizzling the pavements above. Still, it is fun to chuckle at their misfortune.

pavement-oef-frying time and they take off for the whole month of August. This is a good time to visit Paris by the way. Not because our lovely Parisian cousins are away of course; no, because their properties are abandoned so there’s free digs up for grabs.

We lucky, lucky few can breathe in the salty-sea air, feel the refreshing beach-side breeze and rejoice at the cackling seagulls as we await the next thunderstorm to clear the air and mercifully scatter the flying hyenas.

This trend actually began in Tarring. For those people who don’t know where Tarring is, it’s pretty much in the centre of Worthing. For those folk who don’t know how to find it, it’s impossible unless you know the secret navigational code. It’s like the lost city of Z. Did you know that no-one was ever ill in Tarring until explorers stumbled into a tombstone in St. Andrew’s Church and introduced poetry, plague and pestilence?

…they live quite separate lives from the rest of us, convinced they are a remote hamlet in Somerset… Why is it that after five minutes of sun, frivolous news outlets predict a heatwave whilst we forecast environmental Armageddon with all the impending doom and depression of Emily Bronte wondering how to deprive readers of any sunlight and joy whilst penning Wuthering Heights? “We’ll pay for that” goes the stuck-recordinternal-dialogue every time the thermometer trips 25oC. And invariably we do with electrical storms that scare the living daylights out of us at stupid o’clock in the morning as Thor simultaneously lets rip a flash of blinding light and grandmother-of-all-bombs directly above, causing us to bolt straight upright as we embarrassedly pontificate about the wonder of nature whilst trying to suppress the rabid heartbeat/panic attack. Even so there are days when the heat remains in place and life turns into Ice Cold in Alex, as inhabitants of a previously respectable sea-side haven begin to strip off, drink beer on the street and sweat profusely in plain view. Three words: dis-gust-ing. And that’s just the view from my mirror. This is when the good denizens of Tarring head for the hills, not unlike the bon citoyens de Paris vacating the stifling city and heading out to the country as the build-up of heat reaches

For those of you who have never met anyone from Tarring, they are indeed a rare breed. They are a village within a town and live quite separate lives from the rest of us, convinced they are a remote hamlet in Somerset.

And so, fearing they would succumb to the tropical diseases foisted upon them by surrounding natives, the Tarring contingent would escape in the summer to the far-off destinations of Shoreham-by-Sea in the east (yes, they too fell for that gratifying moniker) and Angmering and East Preston in the west (fyi East Preston is not east of Preston; there is no Preston apart from the one in Lancashire. They should have called it Preston-by-Sea and sat back and counted the coffers). This tradition goes on to this day, although thanks to modern forms of transport such as bicycles, Tarring-ites now travel further afield – to Bognor Regis and Littlehampton in the west (for a comfort break) before moving on to Chichester – and Brighton in the east (not stopping at all actually) and settling on Eastbourne (before waking in a cold sweat and realising they’re holidaying in Worthing #2 thirty-five miles down the road).

A similar thing happened to the good citizens of Little Paddocks in South Ferring (this is a real place although it should be in fairy-tale land, as should some of the constituents). South Ferring to all intents and purposes is a village in Ferring, which is a village in Worthing. So we have a hamlet in a village in a village in a town. No wonder they get hot in summer, surrounded by all those outer perimeters – a bit like wearing a duffel coat in the desert. And so, sweating profusely under their finery and loading their crates of ale onto the horsedrawn carriages, the long-dressed ladies would vacate their prized properties safe in the knowledge that no tourist could ever find their tiny village, surrounded as it was by an outer-ring of deceptively alluring villages with much more attractive titles such as Goring-by-Sea.

So as arid August approaches, take a hint from those roasting in the town centre enclave of Tarring and head for the hills. Literally, try the South Downs: much cooler and you may discover the mystical lost province of Big Paddocks.
