YOUR GUIDE TO WHAT’S ON IN AUGUST
IMAGE: ABI ELSE
It’s Coming Home No not that. I recently came home from a few days away. Back to sunshine, friends, and no holiday blues, just a real appreciation of how lucky we are to live in this part of the world. OK, MAYBE WORTHING isn’t ‘THE best place to live this side of a desert island with a free bar’, a bit of a bold statement we made in the launch issue of Here & Now, but it is a bit special, made more so by the people who are creating opportunities and events that make our lovely town a better place to live. One such event is the recent Worthing Pride 2018. A stunning day, the seafront was buzzing with happy people, congratulations to the organisers for putting on a fun, well organised day. The same day, a colleague enjoying a late evening meal at a seafront bar sent photos to friends who asked if he was on holiday abroad. The bar wasn’t free, but he’s a firm believer that Worthing is one of the best places to live too. If you are on a staycation this Summer, here’s a few events we’ve picked out from the listings. Worthing Lions brings us another weekend of seafront fun for all the family on 28 and 29 July. See page 39 for a full itinerary of events including the funfair on to 29 July.
The Family Stone are back in Worthing on Mon 6 August at the stunning Southern Pavilion. Dance your way through hits like Family Affair, Everyday People and Life. Circus Seen brings us a midweek special family fun day at Beach House Park, from noon to 5pm on Tues 7 August Open air cinema at Denton Gardens from Friday 10 to Sunday 12 August. See page 31 for a full listing of some great cinema classics for all ages. Meanwhile… Comic Con at the Assembly Hall on Sat 11 August. Indulge your inner geek, with cosplay, retro games, special guests and lots more. Don’t miss Acrojou, dance-circus duet performed on a German Wheel, outside the Pavilion Theatre on Sat 18 August, it’s stunning and it is free. Worthing Rotary have a bank holiday weekend of music, markets and more on 26 and 27 August. There’s so much more for you to enjoy this Summer here in Worthing, just take a look at the listings! n

Art on the Pier There’s always something cultural going on in Worthing. Right on our doorsteps, much of it free and and all of it inspiring and interesting.
DOWN ON THE PIER, you will have noticed the glorious rainbow coloured panels, attracting the attention of photographers and visitors alike. These have been extended right to the southern end of the central windbreak. They now frame the new exhibitions installed in conjunction with Creative Waves’ new Heritage Lottery funded project Pop Up on the Prom. This ongoing project celebrates 200 years of Worthing’s seaside heritage, focussing on the social history and the changes along the promenade since the first section was built in 1819. Creative Waves is run by local artists Nadia Chalk and Vanessa Breen, who design and organise projects which involve research and development of ideas from local sources, like the Museum and Art Gallery, and the archives of the Library. Children and adults have the opportunity to express a response to the research through all forms of art, in workshops, working independently, or at school. The current project, Pop Up on the Prom, is using some official archive materials, but Nadia and Nessy are keen to include your old photographs, and family stories relating to the seafront, so if you would like to be involved, please do contact Nadia directly; nadia@creativewaves.co.uk n

ART - AUGUST NEWS ROUND UP CONTINUED
Leaf on a Breeze Over at the Museum, a playful and intriguing exhibition is visiting, through August and on till 24 November. Curious and strange objects, apparently unearthed in Worthing, are on display in ‘A Leaf on a Sea Breeze’. AS WELL AS ARTEFACTS AND STORIES relating to Worthing and the surrounding countryside, the curators will be bringing apparently prehistoric, Roman and Saxon finds, and unfamiliar rural tools such as a daub wattler, a nettle prod and a leaf rustler. If you are already amused by the very idea of a leaf rustler (which maybe a bit like a cattle rustler?) you can find out more about ‘A Leaf on a Sea Breeze’ exhibition and workshops, visit worthingmuseum.co.uk or call Worthing Museum on 01903 221 448. Some of our readers may know about the very successful art workshops run by Jenny MasingiriTodd, whose Art-K is
based in a colourful and inviting studio space near the Thomas a Becket. Art-K recently held an open session at Bohunt School as part of Worthing Artists Open Houses. Art by the children and adults who attend Art-K’s popular workshops was on display, and impressed everyone; the range of work, and the skill and imagination shown by the artists was remarkable. Jenny’s workshops continue with a summer programme throughout August, and the Autumn term starts in September. You can find out more about Art-K on their Facebook page or on the website www.art-K.co.uk/worthing Photo of Bohunt display if I can get one And did you know, Northbrook MET offers a marvellous (and free!) opportunity to young artists, aged 14-16. The college runs the National Art & Design Saturday Club. This national scheme takes place in art colleges all over the UK and offers a course of workshops, run by art tutors and artists, to develop skills in a wide range of genres. The aim is to encourage school age artists to consider a career in the UK’s world-class creative industries. Northbrook MET’s workshops run on Thursdays, after school, and the programme includes visits to studios and exhibitions, as well as participation in the end of year celebration by all the participating clubs at Somerset House. If you know someone who would benefit from this amazing opportunity, check the website www.natsatclub.org and contact debbie.bailey@gbmet.ac.uk for local details. As I said at the beginning of this piece, there’s always something arty going on in Worthing, not just great stuff to look at, but opportunities for making art, improving skills, connecting with each other, so let’s make Worthing art again! n

In celebration of National Burger Day taking place Thursday, 23 August, we’ve got a succulent recipe in store for you to get your chops around courtesy of the Hairless Biker and, a handy guide to handling your burger…
| August 2018 | HERE & NOW
It’s a fact, sorry. We know this because three experts armed with complex 3D burger models and backgrounds in fluid mechanics, engineering, and dentistry, spent four months proving it. So, without further ado, here’s the scienced (no, don’t look that word up) method of eating a burger...
BURGER EATING: The Wrong Way METHOD: thumbs on the bottom and fingers on top. OUTCOME: backend spillage. Urgh. Not a great look for anyone so refined. BURGER EATING: The Right Way METHOD: thumbs and pinky fingers on the bottom, middle three fingers on each hand on top. Don’t hold too tight! OUTCOME: the contents are pushed forward, not out the backend into your lap. Dignity, intact. BONUS TIP: the dental expert advises opening and closing your mouth beforehand to warm up the muscles. Give it a go and let us know on Twitter @Hereandnow_mag your findings.
IN SEARCH OF THE PERFECT BURGER? If you’re in search of the perfect burger, you won’t go wrong by checking out one of our advertisers this month. Try the Bad Boy Cow Shed burger. It’s a monster, a good monster, confirms our reviewer. Drop into The Dining Room for their TDR burger, prime beef, home made relish and brioche buns are matched with Sussex Charmer Cheese. And, Food have just launched their Street Express menu. Try the Cajun burger or the handmade beef patty, whatever you choose, this no fuss fresh menu tastes as good in jeans & tees or your midweek best. n Ella Davies

50 SIDES OF WORTHING
Food Pioneers Worthing is home to many creative and inspiring people, this month we shine a light on Anne Thwaites, who is one of the directors of local social enterprise We Are FoodPioneers CIC. THIS AMAZING GROUP OF PEOPLE in Worthing host a local community beekeeping initiative, the Worthing Honey Collective, the Last Fisherman Standing project as well as Neptune’s Larder, a new seaweed cookery and well-being programme.
Why Worthing?
I’ve been coming to Worthing on holiday since 2001. When I finally moved to England, and had the chance to move here, I took it. It was, and still is, my no 1 hometown. I find life by the sea very soothing.
When were you happiest?
Happiness is not singular in time, it comes and goes like the sea.
What has been your most embarrassing moment? I find it quite difficult to be embarrassed, I’d rather laugh.
Who would play you in the film of your life? Peter Pan
Which book OR piece of music changed your life? The Neverending Story by Michael Ende
What did you want to be when you were growing up? An archaeologist or a writer
Who would you invite to rave with you on Worthing beach?
Anyone who is partial to a bit of wild dancing and lots of electro swing beats
What single thing would you do to improve Worthing? Our relationship with the sea, that’s partly why we ran the Last Fisherman Standing project.
What would you donate to Worthing Museum?
The interviews we did with Worthing fishermen, to preserve their tales of life at sea and on land.
What event did you last pay to go to in Worthing? Worthing Pride - loved it!
Find out more about us on foodpioneers.org.uk and become part of the Food Pioneers community. For more information on the Last Fisherman Standing Project see lastfishermanstanding. org.uk n
If you could bring something extinct back to life, what would you choose?
An animal. Probably a dinosaur as I was obsessed with them as a kid.

Sompting Treacle As you may know by now, the Five Fascinating Facts of Adur are seeped in history and of course, facts. IN THE SPIRIT OF ‘LEG-PULLING’, I wish to share with you the fantastical history of Sompting and the magical industry of the treacle mine. Created by the late Alfred Longley, the Sompting Treacle Mine remains one of Adur’s more charming aspects of history. So, read on to delightfully discover my Five Fascinating Facts spun from Longley, apparent Bottler of Moonlight, Inventor of the Overland Submarine and the of the Underground Kite…
1
According to two Sompting footballers, Slogger Mercer and Blocker Hollis, Sompting treacle was a wonderfully sweet treat that gave them more ‘stickability’ when playing challenging games.
2
Jimmy Smuggles, inventor of the Treacle Mines, would regularly lower the chimney of his treacle mine so that the moon would not crash into it as it passed overhead.
3
As well as the treacle mine, Smuggles was also the creator of a porridge quarry and a factory that made handkerchiefs for weeping willow trees.

East Street Shm the treacle mine singing, “We are marching, marching on a line, Left, right, left, right, keep in time, Tired of dancing, tired of silly sheep, One dose of brimstone and we’re all asleep”.
5
From 1903 to 1918, Sompting, which played a vital part in preparing defences, had all its inhabitants labelled, ‘Treacle Miners’. Although the Sompting Treacle Mine is a tale of daftness in sheer sticky splendour, you cannot deny it tickles the imagination. The mine is supposedly hidden along a short five-mile walk along Lambley’s Lane. The long, warm days would make this an ideal family exploration; bring buckets and spades to dig for long-lost treacle! Or perhaps the walk could serve as the perfect opportunity to wind down and stroll away from the, sometimes, all too serious aspects of life. n

“I use Guild Care’s minibus service once a week to attend their Bradbury Wellbeing Centre. As I am living with dementia being able to come to this Centre gives my wife time to go shopping or meet friends socially. She knows I am safely being picked up and dropped home again, so she doesn’t need to worry. This service is very valuable to us.” Trevor, Worthing are often family members, to enjoy a day out with their loved one knowing we are on hand to help. Last year, our minibuses undertook over 63,000 miles around Worthing and the surrounding areas, collecting and dropping passengers home. But, with this level of usage comes high mileage and wear and tear. At about ten years of age, they become expensive to run and can spend more time in the garage than helping local people. This is why we are asking you to help fund a new minibus within this 85th Anniversary year. It will be a minibus for your local community, funded by people like you. Michelle Sidney, Charity Fundraising Manager, says: “Each minibus costs £55,000 to purchase and adapt for the needs of disabled passengers. We need the help of our local community, from members of the public to businesses, to raise these funds and ensure local people can continue accessing the help they need.” Key in Guild Care’s Minibus Campaign to watch our appeal film on YouTube. BOOK REVIEW
Wed 15 August
The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett
When I offered to speak on September’s BBC Book Club radio show on behalf of West Sussex Library Service I was informed that the theme for the month would be ‘comedy’ and I was reminded of a delightfully humorous little novel – The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett. AT ONLY 121 PAGES LONG (paperback edition), this is a hugely enjoyable story which opens with the Queen’s accidental encounter with the City of Westminster travelling library parked near the palace. Feeling obliged to borrow a book, the Queen’s journey into reading begins. ‘She’d never taken much interest in reading. She read, of course, as one did, but liking books was something she left to other people. It was a hobby and it was in the nature of her job that she didn’t have hobbies.’ Reading extensively from Nancy Mitford, to celebrity autobiography, the Queen begins to reflect on her role, to the concern of her staff. ‘…she had begun to perform her duties with a perceived reluctance: she laid foundation stones with less élan and what few ships there were to launch she sent down the slipway with no more ceremony than a toy boat on a pond, her book always waiting.’ Thus, staff feel they must intervene, but will their defiance succeed? Will the Queen return to her role with the vigour and sense of duty as before, or will her reading open her to a new world?
One of the joys of reading this novel is experiencing the Queen’s discovery of the power of reading to change lives. ‘“Can there be any greater pleasure,” she confided in her neighbour, the Canadian minister for overseas trade, “than to come across an author one enjoys and then to find they have written not just one book or two, but at least a dozen?”’ A sentiment which I completely comprehend. It also demonstrates the importance of libraries and the pleasure that talking about books and reading can provide.
Cosmic Skeptic Speaks to Worthing! 8pm Alex J O’Connor talks Moral Philosophy. Brunswick and Thorn So, there you have it Here & Now fans! That all sounds like fun and I know I’ve got my ticket! This month we also remember a wholly different type of hero.

Tide of Light: The BIG MAKE Project TIDE OF LIGHT’S WORK IN THE COMMUNITY continues after a huge boost from WSCC. £2,500 has been donated to The BIG MAKE, Tide of Light’s latest project. There is £2,000 left to fundraise if the project is to be a success. For those of you who were in town last November, you cannot have missed Tide of Light, Worthing’s biggest free annual event. The sound of drumming filled the air as the festival took over Worthing.
Green Dreams
After 5 years and with a crowd of 40,000 last year, the group behind the event have taken the decision to separate the parade and party from the fireworks, and to have two separate events, twice the fun!
THE 3RD ANNUAL GREEN DREAMS COMMUNITY FOOD AND GREENSPACES FESTIVAL is back on Sunday 30 September from 10.30am-4pm at Field Place Manor House & Barns. The festival brings together a wide variety of local community and social enterprise groups, small scale local food producers and greenspace initiatives from both Adur and Worthing. You’ll find plenty of activities to inform, engage and entertain all of the family, from fun fair rides and face painting, to magic, food and makers workshops plus entertainment from local acts and groups and of course, a bar with locally produced beer. FREE entry. To book a stall (no later than Wed 15 August) visit Facebook ‘Green Dreams Worthing’ for info.
Worthing Wormhole WORTHING WORMHOLE IS BACK IN TOWN on 10th November. This local comic con is run by local people as a not for profit. Colm Sweet, Jon Baggaley and a team of people have come together to put the event on. Colm said, “we do it to add fun, sci-fi, science and diversity to Worthing. We try and use local stall holders where possible and have booked local street food companies to cater for us.“
Jess Estcourt, Volunteer Director says “Our ambition for 2019 is to produce a really high quality, visually stunning Tide of Light parade and after party. We’re going to do this with large illuminated sculptures made in community workshops with the help of the New Carnival Company, a leading carnival arts company with over 20 years’ experience”. The BIG MAKE project will provide FREE opportunities for up to 80 Worthing residents and 4 community groups to build extraordinary illuminated lanterns. To make this a reality we have launched a campaign on Spacehive, a donation website. More info here: spacehive.com/ tideoflight. Tide of Light will take a break year from parading in 2018 and use this time to get organised, forge new relationships and put in appearances at many of the main Worthing events. FINANCE CORNER
Summer Finance Summer is well and truly here and with it roasting hot days, for most of us it’s the time of year when finance couldn’t be further from your mind as we enjoy barbeques, the beach and summer holidays.
B U S I N E S S F E AT U R E
HOWEVER, KEEPING TABS ON OUR MONEY remains key so we can enjoy those days on the beach! Looking ahead, what are the key areas to consider? The Bank of England appears to be leaning increasingly towards a rate rise which, if it happens, will mean a further increase in outgoings for all those on a variable rate or tracker rate mortgage. The property market is also quite flat with most estate agents having less on the market. Property growth has slowed locally and declined in parts of London compared to the last few years. This seems to be driven partly by people just ‘holding fire’ with their home move until the economic situation is better understood post Brexit. The high profile turbulence around Brexit points towards uncertainty ahead which should still be an area of concern for those managing the family budget. It is widely expected that when this happens the cost of goods from food and wine to clothes and cars could increase. A weaker pound has meant basic and everyday costs have risen with higher fuel prices leading to a higher cost of goods.
What we tend to see is that when prices rise almost sneakily on everyday items, unsecured debts like credit cards and overdrafts slowly increase until suddenly there’s a larger debt than you’d like and you’ve stopped clearing it each month. So, what’s the simple safeguard here? Keep an eye on spending, make sure it’s not creeping out of control. If it is, reduce spending on non-essential items. Awareness is key and if you identify overspending deal with it before it’s a major issue to save yourself a longer term headache.
MATT SUTTON, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF EMERALD FINANCE, your local award winning financial advisers, is here to answer your financial questions. Got a query? Email on info@emeraldfinance.co.uk
If your Mortgages or other debts are on variable or tracker rates look to secure some stability with a 2, 3 or 5 year fixed rate to protect yourself from future rate rises. Fixed rate deals available are still fantastic value, and there is peace of mind in knowing what your outgoings are and fixing them at that level. Everyone’s situation is different so for a personalised review, pop into one of our shops at 10 Chapel Road or 77 Rowlands Road in Worthing, or call 01903 222940 to arrange an appointment at your home or our office. One of our advisers will be pleased to help. But most of all enjoy the summer, the school holidays, a swim in the sea, an odd beer or prosecco, the sun and barbeques! n

This past weekend I took a walk down Worthing seafront with my family. Nearby to the Pavilion, we decided to ‘take five’ and rest from the heat near the personalised seafront planted gardens. WITH TWO VERY CAREFULLY DESIGNED embellished tennis racquets, I quickly realised that we were sitting on the wall of a garden dedicated to the very inspirational Lauren Jones, who I met several years ago at the Sussex Sports Awards. It is very easy to band about the word ‘inspirational’ but when you hear Lauren’s story, you’ll understand why this term is used so frequently to describe her. Lauren broke her back at the tender age of 13 ending a promising football career after having a successful spell at Brighton & Hove Albion Ladies Under 16s. She underwent two very painful operations and spent five months in rehab at Stoke Mandeville. It was here where she discovered wheelchair tennis, and within two months was sent for Paralympic trials at Brunel University. She was spotted as having a talent for the sport and upon her discharge in November 2009 attended a wheelchair tennis development camp in Swindon and was soon offered a place on the GB development course by the Lawn Tennis Association. In 2013 Lauren was world no. 1 in Juniors and ranked no. 25 in the world in women’s seniors. Today Lauren is ranked no. 3 in Britain, a formidable achievement. After seeing this well-kept garden dedicated to Lauren, I decided to do a bit of research and check-in to see how she’s been getting on. Well, put it this way, she hasn’t stopped! And to be honest, I doubt she ever will. She was selected to represent Great Britain
at the 2018 BNP Paribas World Team Cup in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, in June. How amazing for both Lauren and the town to see ‘Worthing’ represented on a global scale. I am barely scratching the surface here when it comes to Lauren’s achievements; in 2017 she claimed her fourth doubles title of the year and at the 2018 Preston Indoor Wheelchair Tennis Tournament she again earned Brit success in the women’s doubles. I urge anyone to check her out because when you do, you will believe that anything is possible with some courage, belief, and sheer determination. Lauren is really one of those silent heroes who just goes about her business and gets on with it with a can-do approach. She really is a jewel in Worthing’s crown. Finally, you may recall that I wrote with much anticipation and excitement last month about the impending FIFA World Cup, Wimbledon, and International One Day Cricket. It goes without saying; these events didn’t disappoint. What they have done is simply rouse a nation which had felt a somewhat disconnect between football and the England national team. The attitude, decorum, and the application of both the players and manager, Gareth Southgate, has reinforced the nation’s love, pride, and passion for England. They have united communities up and down the UK at a time when tension and division from political uncertainties have been rife. Whilst the World Cup didn’t ‘come home’, football certainly did. n

HEALTH & WELLBEING
Time is Precious. Waste it Wisely.
The Worthing Ambler takes us on the waggiest trail. I STROLL SOUTH OUT OF GORING-BY-SEA station to the backdrop of Highdown Hill. It’s a glorious sunny day with a breeze to take the edge off the heat of my favourite pavements.
1.
After a few steps I come to a standstill by Bluebell Way. Here Traci Moss has created a sculpture depicting cut-out figures clambering over wavy poles. Quite unexpectedly a reallife muse approaches. “That’s me in the pork pie hat,” he says laughing, “Although I don’t know why I’m upside down!” I learn how along with some other residents he modelled for the art work. He demonstrates by striking a pose. Aha! Straight away I see the likeness.
2.
Down Goring Street I spy a handsome four-legged creature

taking a particular interest in his owner’s shopping bags. At Goring Cricket Club recreation ground there’s a poster for the upcoming dog show in aid of St Barnabas. I’ll be looking forward to the ‘owner/dog look-alike’ contest.
3.
When I reach The Bull’s Head I can’t help but sneak in for some sustenance. The building dates back earlier than 1770 and while savouring a traditional still lemonade with a twist of rhubarb I contemplate the ceiling. On the first floor there were once dances. Extra beams had to be inserted to support the weight of the enthusiastic merriment.
4.
South East of the pub I enter a shady footpath, half expecting Piglet and Pooh to stroll out from the foliage caught up in their ponderings. I follow two gorgeous sausage dogs ‘out for a stroll’ along Ilex Way and see many more potential candidates for ‘waggiest tail’ down through the Plantation. Volunteers meet here monthly on Saturday mornings, carrying out conservation work to ensure the future of this leafy sanctuary.
5.
From out across the field comes the whirr of a model plane. Down between Goring Gap and Greensward the air is thick with the smell of barbeques. I finish my amble gazing out over the shore where searchers explore rock pools. The dedication on the bench upon which I sit advises: “Time is Precious. Waste it wisely.” Info: The Ilex Conservation Group see Adur and Worthing Council website. Bluebell Way sculpture see traci-moss.com n

THOMAS H GREEN - MUSICAL TIME MACHINE
JOHN GIBBONS REHEARSING THE ORCHESTRA
Symphony Memories The Worthing Symphony Orchestra and its predecessor, the Worthing Municipal Orchestra, have been part of the fabric of the town for almost a century. WHETHER YOU’RE INTERESTED IN CLASSICAL MUSIC OR NOT, they’re one of the area’s most admired musical institutions, and certainly one of its oldest. Their 2018-19 concert season kicks off with Scottish star violinist Nicola Benedetti performing Sibelius’s ‘Violin Concerto’ at the Assembly Hall on 2nd September. “It’s very apt,” says the WSO’s Chairman Eddie Hurcombe, “Municipal orchestras were responsible for bringing a lot of classical music to people’s attention in the earlier years of 20th century. Not many realise that in this THE ENDcountry all Sibelius’s symphonies were first heard not in concert halls but at the ends of piers.” OF-THE-PIER
ENTERTAINMENT OF A CENTURYAND-A-HALF AGO HAS DEVELOPED INTO A BELOVED INSTITUTION

Hurcombe, also one of the orchestra’s double bassists, is its longest-serving member, joining them in 1972. He’s the ideal candidate, then, to shine a light on their history and starts by explaining how Worthing Pier’s opening in 1862 kick-started a chain of events that leads, eventually, to today’s Symphony Orchestra. Piers were originally built for people to board boats. Worthing’s had a toll gate at its southern end and employed musicians to entertain, initially

the Rhine Band and, by 1909, the wonderfully titled Madam Florence Sidney James and her 12 String Ladies Orchestra. After the Worthing Corporation (predecessor to the Borough Council) bought the Pier in 1920, the Southern Pavilion was erected, opening in 1926, and the Worthing Municipal Orchestra was set up. “The Pavilion was very much like a winter gardens,” Hurcombe explains, “Palms inside and aspidistras, tables and chairs, and the Municipal Orchestra offered full time employment to five musicians - soon upped to eight - although it was a heavy schedule, sometimes seven days a week.” In 1927 the Orchestra’s director, Joseph Shadwick, persuaded the council to promote the first ever symphony concert and augmented his musicians with 25 from the London Symphony Orchestra for a programme that included Dvořák’s ‘New World Symphony’ and Mendelssohn’s ‘Violin Concerto’. “Municipal orchestra programmes were very catholic,” says Hurcombe, “You might have a waltz and extracts from a popular ballet followed by [jolly light music standard] ‘The Grasshopper’s Dance’. The idea was that if you didn’t like what you were hearing, don’t worry, something completely different will be along soon.” The third building to play a key role in the orchestra’s development was the Assembly Hall, built by town alderman James G Denton, opened in 1935, and bequeathed to the community. It was just the right size for a larger orchestra, with acoustics to match. There were, however problems along the way. World War II saw the Pier closed and a section of it destroyed, to hinder possible Nazi
Do you have any memories of music life in Worthing? We’re interested in stories and scenes from any era, perhaps from the time of the concerts mentioned here? Or earlier, from dances in the ‘40s and ‘50s? Or how about ‘90s and Noughties gigs? We’d love to feature it and chat about it. Please email editorial@ hereandnowmag.co.uk invasion. The austerity that followed the war was even more damaging. There were only three concerts during the 1948-49 season and none the following year. Throughout the ‘50s the orchestra survived but it did so by narrowing down, performing what its director Herbert Lodge called “symphony concerts in miniature”. It wasn’t until the late-’60s and early 1970s that it began to truly thrive again. Under the leadership of Jan Červenka the orchestra started visiting local schools, introducing children to its music, and from 1972, after the purchase of a Steinway grand piano, Červenka also instigated the tradition of Sunday Symphony Concerts which continue to great (and ongoing) success. Eddie Hurcombe joined the orchestra that same year. He has many memories of the era, such as the Orchestra’s 50th anniversary concert which lasted four hours – under lights - in the stifling heat of the famously scorching summer of 1976. Or an occasion when the Pavilion’s raked stage proved problematic.

“The piano was being played really loudly,” he laughs, “Some of the violinists had to sit with their backs braced against it to stop it rolling forward across the stage.” The end of the ‘70s also saw the Municipal Orchestra dissolved as a permanent council-funded body, to be replaced by the Symphony Orchestra which continued on a freelance pay basis. Since the 1980s, especially following the quiet authoritative leadership of John Ludlow, it’s been known as one of the country’s finest provincial orchestras, as is borne out by the quality of guest soloists who request to play. Names along the way run the gamut from late, great pianists such as Peter Katin and Shura Churkassky to, in more recent times, the globally acclaimed cellist Sheku KannehMason. Hurcombe also recalls a comedic occasion when the orchestra had another very special guest, the pianist Philip Challis. “He was going to play solo in the second half and the orchestra went backstage for a break,” he recalls, “David Finn, the principle cellist, took this opportunity to light up his pipe. Unbeknownst to him, he was standing directly under a newly installed and highly sensitive smoke detector. Thus Philip Challis found himself accompanied by fire alarm bells and left the stage in some bemusement as firemen swarmed all around him.” Usually, however, the orchestra happily avoids such slapstick drama. Under the directorship of John Gibbons since 1997, it has gone from strength to strength. Since 2015 it’s been a self-governing body and is a registered charity. The Borough Council, in other words, no longer owns the orchestra, but gives it support in the use of the Assembly Hall and its staff and technicians. The forthcoming season, which runs until next May, sees no let-up in quality control. It includes a new year celebration of Viennese music, performances of Grieg’s ‘Piano Concerto’ and Rimsky-Korsakov’s ‘Scheherezade’, and guest appearances by violinist Jennifer Pike, violaplayer Sarah-Jane Bradley, Turkish pianist Idil Birit, and Australian soprano Helena Dix. It’s safe to say that the end-of-thepier entertainment of a century-and-a-half ago has developed into a beloved institution that only grows stronger with time. Sherlock Holmes: The Sign of Four, Connaught Theatre, 20-22 September. Tickets 01903 206 206 | worthingtheatres.co.uk
Ah, what a treat we have in store for theatrelovers, and for those who can’t resist a classic mystery mixed with some of the finest deduction skills in the history of man. I AM OF COURSE REFERRING TO THE TIMELESS SHERLOCK HOLMES, the creation of the hugely talented author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887, who pioneered the birth of detective novels at a time in which they were first being introduced. The first Holmes novel, A Study In Scarlet, was written in just three weeks by Doyle, who was running a struggling Doctor’s surgery in Portsmouth at the time. The novel was rejected by many publishers and eventually it was published in Beeton’s Christmas Annual.
Interestingly enough, his second novel was the result of a dinner party with Oscar Wilde, a name we celebrate in Worthing of course for his writing of The Importance of Being Earnest in our delightful town. The editor of Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine Joseph Stoddart admired Doyle’s first work, and convinced him to write the second novel. Subsequently in 1890, Oscar Wilde’s only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray appeared in the publication, as well as Doyle’s classic Holmes novel The Sign of the Four. It is this fascinating tale that one of my favourite companies, Blackeyed Theatre, will be bringing to life on the Connaught Theatre stage this autumn. I am lucky enough to review as a hobby and I went to see both their adaptations of Frankenstein, where the creature was spellbindingly played as a puppet, and The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde. They are the masters of Gothic Theatre and this world premiere tour of their latest show is going to be fantastic. You’ll have to see it for yourself. There is nothing like first-hand evidence. n

Jimmy Carr The Best of, Ultimate, Gold, Greatest Hits Tour PREVIEW: Jimmy Carr is
like marmite; you love him, or you hate him. I am sort of perched in the middle, some days I find his shows absolutely hilarious (when he tried attempting regional accents) other times I can’t stand him, solely because of his goose like laugh. His slightly offensive humour is not to everyone’s taste, but if you like him in ‘8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown’, ‘Big Fat Quiz Of The Year’ or his new show, ‘Your Face Or Mine’, join him for a bit of stand up on 24 August at the Assembly Hall. Sorry young Jimmy Carr lovers, this show isn’t suitable for those under the age of 16 (ah no! I won’t be able to go!) and I definitely wouldn’t take anyone who is easily offended.

LISTINGS - MUSIC
Oscar’s View Worthing
Hi guys! I’m Oscar and I have taken over the music listings from Connor. I will continue to shine the Here & Now spotlight on young talent, which is easy to do in this area with cover bands/original artists pouring out from our local establishments and studios. I will also be sure to highlight a range of music genres, and age groups!
Original Music
I am a young musician from Northbrook Met, playing drums in bands that include Lisa Lo (first London gig at Loud In London festival on 15 Aug, playing at the Rocksteady) and Kesagake (playing next at Bar 42 Worthing on 28 Sept, supporting Bleed Again).

Loomis brings his funk-i-fied Texas music back to the Southern Pavilion this September. If would like to win 2 tickets for an evening of ‘powerful Blues, Funk and Soul’, just tell us how old Loomis was when he first met Bo Diddley.

JOE BUNN’S BARDIC TRIALS
Summer Predictions
Summer hasn’t even properly kicked off yet, and I’m already feeling the frisson of what feels like a truly magical Summer. There are a few reasons for this. ENGLAND GOT FURTHER IN THE WORLD CUP than they have in years, creating an atmosphere of hope in this country, then Danny Dyer said a very rude word on the TV, and then focusing in specifically on Worthing, we had our first ever Pride event, and the atmosphere was better than Brighton Pride. And finally, there’s a heatwave of beautifully epic proportions. The Sun has got more than just his hat on, he’s wearing sunglasses, licking at an ice cream and offering you 99p to get your own. With a flake.

- One of the Abba tributes booked for the subsequent two large scale events in Worthing turns out to be a Frank Zappa tribute, because when they were booked it was a really bad line. I am there to witness the fallout. - Trump turns out to be a big prank played on us all, and really he’s The Fonz or someone equally cool in disguise. He is impeached and everyone in the world gets a free Happy Days DVD. - People stop saying ‘Worthing is the new Brighton’ and finally realise what a cool vibe we’ve already got here on our own merits and they start saying ‘Brighton is the New Worthing’ instead.

All of this adds up to a truly magical Summer, but there are 2 million days of it left, so what are my predictions for the rest of this majestic time of year. I’m glad you asked.
- There is a huge community centre erected where Teville Gate used to be, with plenty of space for homeless people to stay. - A man arrives from the future but only says five words before disappearing again. ‘It’s going to be alright.’ - The summer lasts 1,999,930 more days than normal.

THE WORTHING BYPASS
This column will not change your life A man almost as wise as me once sang, “Oh lord it’s hard to be humble, when you’re perfect in every way.” Boy do I know how he felt. And, bless her taffy heart, so does Catherine Zeta Jones. CLASSY CZJ REVEALED IN AN INTERVIEW that she’s fed up to the back teeth of expressing forced humility for who she is. And she’s right. Categorise her as a wife, mother, actor, singer, dancer, superstar would only be a partial description and she may be good, great or indifferent at any and all of those things. Being Catherine Zeta Jones? There she takes the biscuit. Incomparable. There’s only one Catherine Zeta Jones. No apologies necessary. No forced humility. She’s just plain great. As the Beloved Hackette has a touch of the CZJ’s about her – jet black hair, fiery Welsh-rendered temperament lending itself to frequent scowls at yours truly and an inner belief that she is unassailable in her rightness over my recurrent wrongness – I couldn’t help but latch on to Cazzer’s humilityobliterating declaration. In the spirit of the age I even found myself muttering the words “go girl” before remembering that just isn’t me. A similar thing happened with Paul Simon on a documentary about the making of his outrageously inventive and groundbreaking Graceland album, whereby he announced that the title track was – and I swear this was without a trace of arrogance, just certitude – “so perfect”. I literally whooped. Really not me.
THERE IS NO-ONE ELSE ON EARTH THAT COULD BE THE UBIQUITOUS HACK. CUE #2 COLLECTIVE SIGH: THANK GOODNESS FOR THAT.

In an era when every other scrote with a smart phone thinks they’re wittier than Oscar Wilde and more justified than Abraham Lincoln, it is worth reflecting on the fact that great is great and fair to middling is just that. “When you’re good you know it” was one of my father’s favourite sayings (alongside “follow me I’m right behind you” and “jump up and down and make a noise” – all seemingly innocuous slogans until he took me down the philosophical rabbit hole to scour
| August 2018 | HERE & NOW
their hidden meanings – not bad for an unschooled lorry driver).
WORTHING: WELL-TRAVELLED, CULTURALLY AWARE, MULTILINGUAL AND MORE WITH IT THAN A SACK FULL OF HIPSTERS.
“When you’re good you know it” is a statement of fact not an egotistical proclamation. And we can all claim a bit of that. After all, nobody is better at being you than you. Take the Ubiquitous Hack. For all my myriad failings – cue the Beloved with a list as long as an Orangutan’s arm – there is no-one else on earth that could be the Ubiquitous Hack. Cue #2 collective sigh: thank goodness for that. At this point those eagle-eyed Hackolytes amongst you may be bemoaning the previous column’s declaration that we are rarely as good as we think we are. True. In small bites: it is easy to forget that life amounts to little more than one skewered observation after another and our opinion is no more righteous than another (unless you’re Donald Trump, in which case you’re just plain wrong. And Piers Morgan, obviously. So wrong). Our CZJ never claimed to be any good at Greek philosophy, washing up or mowing the lawn, just being herself. So it is with the rest of us, just less glitzy and glamorous and fabulously Welsh. Happily, this fits the collective identity. On visiting Worthing to rehearse the Three Choirs, world-famous chorister Mark Delisser did a straw poll to ascertain who had never left the country in preparation for a cultural world tour of songs. Not a hand was raised. He was amazed – the first time it had ever happened on his extensive tour of choirs throughout the UK.
So there we have it, cosmopolitan Worthing: well-travelled, culturally aware, multi-lingual and more with it than a sack full of hipsters. Pluck a Brighton resident from their nest and they’d have a hissy fit at having no-one to look cool in front of. Come to Worthing and you’ll find we’ve probably visited you previously and know all about your cultural heritage, hang ups and social norms. We just don’t like to shout about it. Too humble. That’s us. Now follow my lead and all together Worthing: “Oh lord it’s hard to be humble, when you’re perfect in every way...” n
