Worthing Ice Rink and Here & Now hand over a Cool Grand to local Worthing resident The Cool Grand competition, in association with Worthing Ice Rink, was launched with our first issue in October 2016 and ran over 3 months to December. The lucky £1000 winner was Brad Walker, a local Worthing resident, who told us “I was shocked and amazed to get the call from Here & Now. You just never expect to win. It was fantastic to win just before Christmas, it enabled me to pay off some bills and treat my kids. It gave me the opportunity to take the kids to the pantomime in January as well as do some of their favourite things, like swimming, and now ice skating, which they both loved on the day the cheque was presented”.

Phil Duckett from Worthing Ice Rink said “We were excited to be part of the launch issue of the magazine last year, it tied in nicely with the marketing launch of the Worthing Ice Rink, which I think is a great community asset for the town. There was no better way to attract people’s attention than to offer £1000 with Here & Now. I was amazed but not surprised that the people of Worthing embraced the competition and that there were literally hundreds of entries. It was really exciting and pleasurable to hand the cheque over to Brad, especially just before Christmas”. Phil contacted us when he heard that we were developing a monthly what’s on magazine that would be delivered through 30,000 letterboxes and be available to pick up in and around Worthing. Phil said “I have always believed a magazine that could reach the houses of Worthing regularly would be a great asset for our business as well as for others who see the potential to get their message out there. “The Here & Now magazine fits in perfectly with our business model of letting everyone know about what we do and when things are happening. As well as Worthing Ice Rink we also run Worthing Pier’s Southern Pavilion, the Art Deco period building at the end of the pier which we restored back to its former glory just under three years ago. Looking to the future, we have various interesting projects that we are developing, which we think will be good for the town, and Here & Now will be an important part of our marketing strategy”. A huge thanks from us at Here & Now to everyone who’s advertised or worked with us to promote and support the people who are out there making our town a better place to live. We’re still on that learning curve and we are always happy to receive feedback and contributions from people across our community. We haven’t listed places like Bar 42, Cellar Arts Club or Marine View here as the display & sale of art isn’t their main activity but you might like to include them for an interesting refreshment break. We think of art as an investment in “Meaning” which in John Gardner’s words, “is not something you stumble across, like the answer to a riddle or the prize in a treasure hunt. Meaning is something you build into your life. You build it out of your own past, out of your affections and loyalties, out of the experience of humankind as it is passed on to you, out of your own talent and understanding, out of the things you believe in, out of the things and people you love, out of the values for which you are willing to sacrifice something. The ingredients are there. You are the only one who can put them together into that unique pattern that will be your life. Let it be a life that has dignity and meaning for you. If it does, then the particular balance of success or failure is of less account.” Wishing you a unique, lifelong relationship with what you choose. Rose Collis, Author Colonel Barker’s Monstrous Regiment on the book, her new play & why she enjoys talks at the library. Writer and performer Rose Collis will be giving a short talk at Worthing Library on 28 February about her book, ‘Colonel Barker’s Monstrous Regiment’ and the new stage play she is writing, based on the book, supported by Arts Council England. She will be talking about the research and creative processes involved in producing both works, and shedding light on the extraordinary, complex story of someone who veered from tragedy to farce to fame to obscurity, but who always strove to remain ‘a perfect gentleman’. “The story of Col Victor Barker – aka Valerie Arkell-Smith – is one of identity: gender identity, hidden identities, class identity and the conflict between private and public identities”, says Rose Collis. The book tells us that Colonel Victor Barker was a fine figure of a man. Dashing, well-respected, with impeccable manners, he was a model gentleman and devoted father of a young son who worshipped his war hero father.

NEW OVEN CLEANING

But the uniform and military bearing concealed a big secret, revealed in a sensational trial at the Old Bailey in April 1929. For ‘Colonel Barker’ had been born a woman. In 1923, as ‘Col Sir Victor Barker’, Valerie Arkell Smith married Elfrida Hayward in St Peter’s Church, Brighton and unwittingly sowed the seeds of her very public exposure.

Bring Your Oven Back To Life!

The trial became one of the most scandalous news stories of the decade and led to Col Barker’s imprisonment as a woman – but on release, she resumed life as a man.

What made you choose to write a play on this book? And can you tell us a little more about the play. “People still come across the story today, more than 15 years after the book was published. They

hear mention of Colonel Barker, then go looking for the book. It’s a story that’s got everything, and it remains relevant today; that’s why people keep coming back to it. But while I’ve gone back to do a show about a book I wrote many years ago, I’m doing the stage show completely differently. It will be quite stylised, with a cast of four, one of whom will be a sort of ‘compere’/MC, who will guide the audience and the characters through the story. Initially, the play will unveiled with a rehearsed reading performance at the Hove Grown Festival of new writing taking place between March 24 and April 2. What extra elements will you cover in your talk at the Library? “I’ll be including images that weren’t in the book, including some of the seaside show in Blackpool, and talking about the places in Sussex, such as Littlehampton, Climping and Brighton, where key episodes of the story were played out. There’ll be some discussion about the workings behind the book and the research for the book, with some anecdotes about me mooching around graveyards. It’s also a chance to talk about the play and the challenges it presents. There’s so much you can’t put in the show — talks give it an extra dimension. I really enjoy doing them, with Q&As, especially as they attract a real cross section of people; some who are coming to see the show and want background information, and others who are prompted to go see the show.” Copies of Colonel Barker’s Monstrous Regiment will be available to purchase (cash only). Virago published Colonel Barker’s Monstrous Regiment in 2001

Maudie Gunzi The Book Hut, East Beach Studios Here & Now visited Maudie Gunzi at The Book Hut, one of the East Beach Studios housed within old beach chalets next to the popular Coast Cafe des Artistes. The studios are used for creating, displaying, and selling residents work, making them both an attractive workspace, overlooking the ‘Worthing Med’, and an interesting visitor attraction. The Book Hut offers services in the conservation, restoration and binding of books and paper. As we chat about all things books and Worthing, her passion for her art and her love of books is clear as she stresses the importance of sentimental value when a client’s request for restoration of an ‘heirloom’ has less monetary value than the charge for her professional skills. Maudie is currently working on a miniature book, which after pulling out the top drawer of an old chest to create a makeshift table top, she carefully moves out of reach of my coffee. As she serves a passer by, who’s stopped to buy one of her bindings, I have thoughts of adding Here & Now to the waiting list for a hut of our own. We return to the ‘cost’ of sentimental value. “Recently, a customer came in with a standard Stanley Gibbons stamp album, passed on to him in the early 80s - I think he is in his early eighties, I suspect he was given it in the early 1900s - by his mum for his 14th birthday. We discuss the different approach to conservation dictated by the purpose of the book or paper, Maudie explains that “library books need to be able to withstand use – this requires a different approach to conservation than a museum that requires a book to be repaired for an exhibition: their books are on display, so the book needs to look its very best”. Maudie’s love of books dates to

ARTS & CULTURE

her days working in publishing and she reflects on happy times working with books at Thames & Hudson, before promotion to a “desk job” took her away from her “real love of working with books”. A City & Guilds course in bookbinding, she tells me, focused on book structure and was the first step towards returning to work with books. “Not so many bookbinding jobs but realised I wanted to get back to working with books and make it my career and I eventually went back to university and gained an MA in Book Conservation.” The course incorporated work experience at the V&A Museum, London, which subsequently resulted in Maudie being a longterm volunteer, a commitment that may have influenced the recent call to work a couple of days per week back at the V&A. I ask Maudie if she would recommend a career in bookbinding and restoration. “Yes, if they loved it. It’s not financially rewarding, there’s not so many jobs and it’s quite hard to get the job you want. Do I love it? Yes! I had to review what was important to me, I’ve reduced my outgoings, I’ve learnt what’s more important to me”. What brought you to Worthing, and to your studio at East Beach Studios? “My partner and I grew up in South London, we wanted to move but couldn’t afford London prices. We both liked the idea of living by the sea, we looked at the nearest location directly south on the map and worked our way along the coast until we found Worthing, loved the look of the place, decided to stop and we’ve now been here for nearly five years. “We love this place, it’s got some great architecture that seems almost to have stopped in time but has been well kept, it’s old but cared for. “Finding the studio was a stroke of luck. I saw the sign advertising

the opportunity the same day we decided to make Worthing our new home. It’s worked out well. I needed studio space for my tools and it’s a great work space away from home and I’ve been here for a year now. It’s a lovely, supportive community, we are all independent businesses and there’s a wonderfully diverse mix of people who are so creative; artists, a web designer, lighting creators (there are two!), crafts, wood carving, clothes, all mixing working space and galleries. “We’re also part of a wider community growing art spaces in the town. Worthing Artists Open Houses (WAOH) is just one example of this and has been a fantastic way for me to gain insight into other artists in Worthing too. Being part of the Open Houses has been a great way to get to know people. “Last year was the first time I was fully involved in WAOH, I created a fine binding, Treasure Island, as my contribution to the trail. I am going to try and create a fine binding each year, it’s a big commitment of my time, for Treasure Island I coated page edges in gold leaf and individually punched the letters of the first chapter of the book onto the outside cover”. Maudie tells me

that it’s for sale, it’s a stunning book and reminds me of a book cover my daughters gave me some years ago. I leave wondering what the sentimental value is of this labour of love. You’ll find Maudie in The Book Hut, Thursday to Saturday. Find Maudie online at thebookhut. co.uk

‘Electric Pictures’: A Guide to Films, Filmmakers and Cinemas of Worthing and Shoreham” has been co-authored, with James Clarke, by film historian Ellen Cheshire. It was on her research that the opening event of Worthing WOW 2016 was based: a re-creation of a night of variety and film first seen in Worthing’s Southern Pavilion in 1896. This fascinating new book is a must for all film buffs. It captures the county’s rich cinematic legacy in all its glory, with contributions from local historians and film and theatre specialists. From film pioneers and dreamers through to blockbuster films, the south coast has always had a rich movie-life. This book is a one-stop guide to the places and faces, key events and films that comprise this fascinating stretch of the south coast from Worthing to Shoreham. It takes the reader on a journey through three sections: cinemagoing, film-making and a Heritage Trail of key filming locations and cinemas (both lost and surviving). The guide draws on research into press archives, film archives and local history resources to tell the story of the south coast film world. ‘Electric Pictures’ will be published in the spring in paperback and as an e-book by The History Press, ISBN: 9780750982023.

Share the Warmth Helping people in need Did you know that generous and caring Worthing residents have been providing thousands of hot drinks to people in need over the last 3 years? Did you know that the Share the Warmth scheme has also supplied clothes, toiletries and dozens of sleeping bags to the night shelter? Or that the scheme has directly led to several homeless people getting jobs at cafes? Did you know that you can give meaningful support to the homeless, without giving money on the street, at a large number of independent cafes in the town? Well please read on... Three years ago, myself and Simon Wells discussed ideas to help alleviate poverty and help the homeless without giving people money on the street and it struck us that cafes offered the opportunity for providing a hot drink or food. How did the scheme originate? The scheme is loosely based on the Suspended Coffee/Pay It Forward concepts. The origin of suspended coffee originally came from Naples in Italy, over a century ago and was popular in post war times as a way of providing support to exservicemen and families. The principle goal being to provide a source of free hot drinks to local people in need and homeless people has just gotten much easier. How does it work? You can walk into any Share the Warmth Cafe and buy a marble for 50p. The cafe puts the marbles in a jar on the counter and three marbles represent a free hot drink on hold. In one case, a generous man repeatedly put £50 in the pot. A homeless person or person in need, maybe someone who’s reliant on foodbanks or simply hasn’t enough money to escape the house for a coffee, if they see marbles in the jar, can simply ask for a free Share the Warmth coffee. It’s a simple and effective way to give someone a hot drink for £1.50.

COMMUNITY

The scheme relies on the generosity of the donors and the honesty of the claimants. It’s worked well. We are also hugely grateful to the generosity and drive of the cafe owners. What surprised us about the scheme is the impact it has had on people’s lives. For some homeless people in our town, the act of frequenting a cafe helped them connect back into society through building a good rapport with the cafe owners and staff. Several homeless people have gained employment at cafes that they frequented. Other outcomes that resulted from starting the project include; receiving donations from Robert Luff estate agents and Inspired by the Sea, which enabled us to buy sleeping bags; working with Worthing Churches Homeless Project to raise hundreds of pounds at an art auction; and buying supplies, clothing and toiletries for the homeless thanks to donations from photographer Sonja Fox. Much of this has been done in conjunction with the incredible Jubilee Soup Run who work tirelessly with the homeless day in day out. So, next time you are in a café, look out for our logo on the door or for a jar of marbles on the counter. And if you have a spare 50p or more in your pocket, please consider Sharing the Warmth. Participating cafes include: Art-ful Pottery Café, 71 Rowlands Road The Beach House Cafe Bar, 23 Marine Parade The Black Cat Café, 37 Rowlands Road Coast Café, Beach Parade Denton Lounge, Marine Parade Dinkyccino mobile coffee Lush Mobile Cafe Munch Café, 3-5 The Royal Arcade Park Life, 6 Bath Place Smileys Café, 141 South Farm Road Sussex Bread Co. Café, Revenue Chambers, Chapel Rd View Cafe Bar, 70 Marine Parade

COMMUNITY

Community and voluntary action make our society and local areas better. Community Works wants to make sure it has the best impact possible, by providing advice and support to local community organisations, social enterprises and charities. Whether you are keen to set up a new group in your area, or already run a well-established organisation, we aim to create the support and networks to enable you to use your time, expertise and energy efficiently. Being involved in a community or voluntary organisation is extremely rewarding, but it can also be challenging at times. Organisations and groups can find they struggle with issues like raising enough funds, managing volunteers, or finding trustees. Staff and volunteers may also need support on specialist issues such as safeguarding or monitoring and evaluation. We aim to provide the right advice and support, whether through development work, training or information, so that organisations can continue and develop the vital work they do for their communities. Many organisations would not survive without the help of a team of dedicated volunteers, but a recent survey of community groups in

Community Works

Connecting charities, volunteers and businesses to make our local area better Adur and Worthing found that 80% said they needed to recruit more volunteers. We can help organisations to find new volunteers by advertising volunteering opportunities through the national Do It volunteering website. We can also put organisations in touch with volunteers from the business community who may be able to offer specialist advice. We also believe in the value of people coming together to share experiences and learn from one another so in 2017 we will be setting up networks for organisations working on similar issues, for example health and wellbeing. We believe the support and networks we create between organisations and people help to build stronger and fairer local areas for everyone. Community Works has been delivering our services in Adur and Worthing since the Autumn, and are funded by Adur and Worthing Councils to do so. We also work in Brighton and Hove. Woolly Hat Day! Worthing Churches Homeless Projects WCHP have had a very busy January! We have been busy thanking all the people who have supported us in the run up to and over Christmas. We were overwhelmed with donations of gifts for our clients to unwrap on Christmas Day and box upon box of food to help our clients celebrate the festive period, a time which can be challenging for many people and our clients are no exception here.

to provide support for some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

We cannot thank you, the local community, enough for helping WCHP to make Christmas not just bearable but a special and positive time for our clients who are homeless or insecurely housed. A resident at our Stepping Stones Project said ‘ The conversation at the table whilst we were eating [on Christmas Day] was that we really did not know how many people cared about the homeless and insecurely housed, and how many people took the time to make our Christmas a more enjoyable, and a memorable one!’

We are asking participants to donate £1 by texting WOOL £1 to 70070 and posting a photo of themselves on social media. Participants can use the hashtag #wchpwoollyhat and tag us @WCHPnews and @HereAndNow_mag.

It has been great this year to work alongside community groups such as Sunny Worthing (Share the Warmth), Storm Ministries, The Empty Plate Café , Jubilee church among all the other fantastic churches involved in soup runs and the Worthing Winter Night Shelter

Boom! Credit Union board member, Richard Banister tells Here & Now how they help residents in West Sussex. What is a credit union? A credit union is an independent not-for-profit organisation. It’s owned and controlled by its members, who all have something in common. We launched in 2008 as West Sussex Credit Union and recently merged with Surrey to become Boom! So all Boom! members live or work in West Sussex or Surrey. To become a member, you open a savings account or apply for a loan. Is January normally a busy time for you? No, January and February are normally very quiet but this year, given the general economic circumstances, we are having the busiest January we’ve ever had.

Boom! Credit Union Helping local residents Why would you use a credit union? For a number of reasons. We’re a community based organisation that believes in fairness. Our aim isn’t to make huge profits for shareholders. The money that residents save with us and the interest paid on our loans is used to pay dividends to savers and make affordable loans available to other local people. We’re also regulated by exactly the same authorities as high street banks. One of our aims is to save residents of West Sussex and Surrey from paying extortionate credit charges, leaving more money to spend on the essentials of life. We are able to support people who are using high cost lenders, who in some cases are being charged up to 500% APR. Our APR on small loans is 43%, our nearest competitor is 299%. Successful paying off a loan with

the credit union will also improve a member’s credit rating. How do credit unions help people to save? As part of the loans repayment process, we assign a small sum of money to the member’s savings account, which for some people may be the first time they have savings and may mean they don’t need to take out another loan in the future. We had a member we helped some time ago, who successfully paid off her loan and came back to us some months later to borrow again. She was delighted to be reminded that she

I’m sitting in a small vehicle, practically bum-to-the-floor on the track, wiping the breath from my visor. Around me, 9 of my colleagues are hunched in padded racewear, focused and ready for the off. And suddenly it’s 1982 and I’m back in Southport, my dad proudly watching as I take off to attack its large figure 8 track. Get back in the room, man! This is 2016 and we’re at the brilliant TeamSport Indoor Karting track in Lancing. Full race kit, 200cc karts capable of hitting 40mph full-whack, 13 corners and a works team who are suddenly transformed into hardened, competitive racers. But this is the warm-up heat where we’ll familiarise ourselves with our machines: accelerating, braking, working out how to handle the ramp and its gutlurching descent before hitting one of those hairpin twists designed to maintain knife-edge, nerve-jangling concentration. People are going to be holding back a bit, right? Wrong! The green light’s up, pedals are hammered and we’re off! And it’s instant pandemonium as former comrades tear into each other with a manic intensity not witnessed since a Christmas tub of Roses was handed into the office. And here comes another one of those niggly corners; and who’s this ploughing into everyone to gain dominance as he emerges from the bend? None other than the usually mild-mannered Warehouseman who shall now be known as ‘Kamikaze’. But look out for those black flags – too many of them and you’ll get pit-stopped. That’s not going to happen to me, I’m moving too carefully to even get a penalty

sign for intentional bumping. But quick; cop a look at this demented blur scything past into a bend – our normally butter-wouldn’t-melt Accounts Clerk, cackling bansheelike as she carves her way up the field. And I don’t know what they teach in the Balkan countryside, but overtaking people on a red light, waving triumphantly as you do so, is not the done thing in England, Bulgarian Warehouse Operative! After what seems much longer than the allotted 15 minutes, the intense blur of bends, banks and blasting down the thrilling home straight is over and we’re chugging into the pits, keen to find out our scores. Within minutes, backs are patted and disbelieving howls are uttered upon disclosure. And I’m last. Last. Sure, it’s only a bit of fun; I can handle the inevitable ribbing but inside I’m thinking of the younger me watching F1 whilst playing with my favourite Jackie Stewart racing car. And maybe that’s the kicker; being one of the oldest in our team, perhaps my competitive spirit and instincts have been tempered over the years? Maybe the

spark that made that kid fly around the track so recklessly in Southport has forever been dampened. But no. This is racing dammit. We’re in the final now and it’s time to get mean. From my lowly position on the grid I know I’ve got a huge amount of ground to make up, but the overall scores are aggregated by lap times, not positions, so I know I have a chance. And we’re off again! And this time it’s even more thrilling; much quicker than before and I manage to avoid spinning out on corners whilst engaging in what feels like an epic, bruising tussle with my super speedy boss. All too soon it’s over and the scores are excitedly checked. And I’m fifth! A hugely rewarding improvement of 50%, but like everyone else I can’t help the feeling as I stagger away that I will return and I will be faster. A great team-bonding experience and thoroughly recommended. And a timely reminder that back in 1982 the main reason I raced so fast was because I didn’t actually know where the brake was.

We’re in the final now and it’s time to get mean. Séan Baldwin is the author of children’s book Worrisome Wilf’s Beastly Bedtime & is Digital Content Manager at Spicer International @hectamus @spicerintl

in surprisingly large portions! The falafel were firm and herby, and complemented with some home-made tzatziki, hummus, salad and amazing pitta bread with nigella seeds in it. Ro’s fish meze consisted of plaice goujons, marinated crayfish, whitebait and smoked salmon - all locally sourced, and served with sauces and bread.

A bright and crisp January day... two people meandering along the promenade. Their destination? Coast - Cafe des Artistes, Worthing’s well-known eatery on the beach, for a spot of Mediterranean-inspired lunch. I have been coming here on and off for years and consider Stef, the cafe’s owner a dear friend.

The interior of the brick-built tower, part of the Esplanade which houses the East Beach Art Studios is as eclectic, bohemian and welcoming as its reputation would have you believe. We saunter to the counter to peruse the menu and place our order. We selected a fish meze, some falafel and a side order of aubergine fries with aioli. They have a good selection of wines and beers, but tea was the order of the day for me and our waiting staff gladly obliged Ro with a glass of tap water. Other dishes on offer from their

lunch menu included a vegetarian meze, a home-made burger and a choice of soups of the day. With limited facilities they’ve opted for quality over quantity in their selections... and we were not disappointed. At a table by the window, we took in the spectacular sea view and watched the world and its dog go by as we waited for the food. It soon arrived, piping hot and

The standout dish for me was the aubergine fries with aioli. Deep fried in a light tempura batter, they are so more-ish and the creamy sauce to go with them takes it to another level - I urge you to try them! Service was just right and since the portions were so large, the meal was tremendous value too. For the sweet-toothed, there are home-made brownies and lemon drizzle cake, as well as a great selection of ice-cream treats. Ideal for a light working lunch midweek and in the warmer

months, the outdoor space on the beach is great for sipping coffee and eating great Mediterranean food. Come and try it, the change in pace may be just what you’re looking for... Coast Cafe des Artistes, Beach Parade, BN11 2ES Review by Jonathan Nulty & Rosanne Fleming

Four Ways To Woo Your Lover for under £4 this Valentine’s Day All Four You So you’ve just got the stress of Christmas out the way, and before you know it, along comes Valentine’s Day. A day that you either love or hate for obvious reasons. Along with all the hearts and public displays of affection, there comes a road fraught with danger. How much do you spend? Do you bother at all? if they say “Oh, let’s not bother this year” Will you be moving in with the dog, if you take them at their word?

Email: fieldplace@southdownsleisure.co.uk

www.fieldplace.co.uk

Got Netflix and want to chill? Make them a playlist of all their favourite shows, movies and box set for them to binge on. Then wrap up the remote in a big bow, block out some evenings on the family calendar and say “Honey, you never get enough time to do what you want, so here you go, BINGE TILL YOU CAN’T BINGE NO MORE BABY”. Showing that you can be so thoughtful will mean they get the Netflix, and you will definitely get the ‘chill’ as the young people say.

Here to help, is a quick guide that is guaranteed woo your better half for under a fiver. After all, it’s not about how much you spend; it’s about how much thought you put in. So to save your time, we’ve put in the thought for you. What more can you ask ‘four’?

Cost: £0.50 for the ribbon.

A Month Of Lie-In’s.

Telephone: 01903 446401

Idea Two:

Whatever you do, don’t be one of the people that turn’s up with flowers from the garage or worse yet empty-handed. That is unforgivable.

Idea One:

The Boulevard Worthing West Sussex BN13 1NP

PEOPLE

Who doesn’t love a lie-in? So why wait for a weekend. Plan out your day, so you take all the little time-consuming tasks away from your loved one. Make their pack lunch the night before & stick it in the fridge ready to go. Help them pack their work stuff, door keys and everything they normally lose in the morning chaos and make sure it is ready to go. Thus saving precious minutes that can be spent in the land of dreams. Cost: £0.00

Idea Three: Get a big glass jar, buy a pack of felt-tips or better still if you have kids, just pinch theirs. Then grab a pad of coloured paper and write down as many compliments and the lyrics of favourite gooey songs that you can think of then cut them up into little squares and pop them in the jar. If you are stuck for ideas, then a quick Google search of “ The Top 100 Love Songs Of All Time” will help you. Here’s the clever bit. Hand the jar over with the instructions. ‘Whenever you are feeling a bit stressed, or a bit rubbish about life ask me to pick one of these pieces of paper out, and I will sing you whatever it says.’ The result will either be that they will be utterly swept off their feet with your Buble-

like velvety tones or wet themselves with laughter. Cost: £3.50 and a loss of a healthy dose of self-respect. Idea Four: Raid the old family photo album, take out the best ones and pop them out on a piece of coloured string, using clothes pegs, so it looks like bunting. Then hang it all up around the house, in places they least expect it, like the loo or the inside of their car. Not only does this look very cool like you have cloned an Esty store, (especially if you have burgled the kid’s craft box and covered the clothes pegs in paint and glitter. If you don’t have kids or a craft box, that you can purchase them fully pre-jazzed up all ready to go). But it gives the impression that you spend hours lovingly gazing over photos of your beloved. Costs: Clothes Pegs £2.00, string £0.00 if liberated from next doors washing line. Otherwise, it’s around £1.00.

So there you have it, four fail safe and quick to action ideas to make sure that you stay on the right side of your loved one this February the 14th. Until next month, keep it real and keep em’ peeled Dan

They will be utterly swept off their feet with your Buble-like velvety tones or wet themselves with laughter.

Fancy a MATE DATE this Valentines?

Emily said, “I don’t think it’s safe to online date, mate dates are better because you know the person and it’s much safer to go out and do things.” Zac said “Online dating isn’t always safe because you can’t be sure who you are really talking to. Also, in my experience when you talk to someone online you ask a lot of questions to try and get to know that person so when it comes down to meeting them face to face it can make it harder to keep conversation going. With a mate date you already know the person so you feel safer and more comfortable allowing conversation to flow more naturally.” Zac and Emily chose to go for some dinner at a local Wetherspoons and the arcades at Worthing Bowling Alley.

Tips for Networking Lovers Valentine’s day is upon us and, of course, you want to turn up to that networking meeting, cards in hand, make some sales and feel loved. But my business lovers, that’s not how this Valentine’s/networking malarkey works. Here are some networking tips to make real connections and share in the networking love… Show Your Commitment If you’re looking for a financially meaningful LTR, you need to build some trust. This isn’t going to be achieved over one breakfast-meeting tryst. True love and sales invoices can only be achieved when you sign up and declare that you’re in it for the long-term.

If you want to show your fellow networkers that you really care, spend time listening to their needs and wants, make some eye contact, do a bit of mirroring (no, that’s not a euphemism for an act of dubious nature found on one of those less salubrious ‘networking’ sites). Demonstrate your fabulous GSOH. Don’t be pushy though, when your new contact is ready to take the next step, they’ll ask for your card. You told me I was special and that you loved me Don’t leave me consigned to a line in your database of contacts. Business cards act as a reminder of how you routinely forget me over the rest of the year. By all means, stay in touch, don’t get all demanding, just show you’re thinking of me…

Don’t make your only communication a business card

Thinking about getting a flyer out to promote your business, but concerned as to whether they would actually be delivered or just dumped?

to reach new customers There’s a simple answer and that is to ensure the distribution company offers a fully GPS-tracked delivery service, Mike Cottee of Worthing Direct explains, “When I started the business it I was just little old me, and I could personally guarantee

deliveries, but I was turning away so much business that I needed to expand, but how could I continue to guarantee deliveries?

In a little over two years I’ve gone from just me, to having a great team of 12 – we must be doing something right!”

GPS-tracking provided the answer, the trackers report back to the system every 10-seconds, and the system provides a spread-sheet detailing the delivery agents exact location every 10-seconds, you can also zoom in on google maps and see exactly where they have delivered.”

Worthing Direct offers a ‘shared distribution’ service, but never inserts flyers into another item, unlike the Royal Mail, so the flyers scatter as they hit the doormat & all get seen as they get picked-up.

GPS tracking works by receiving signals from multiple global positioning satellites and solves equations to determine the exact location, it simply cannot be beaten. Mike continues, “the GPS tracking is important, but my team are also paid a decent rate, double or even more than some of my competitor’s, which ensures reliability & loyalty, so we always deliver on time & never let the clients down.

Mike Cottee, pictured with one of the Worthing Direct vans.

Mike thinks this also helps with response, “Molly Maid in the Arun district used the Royal Mail in areas we don’t cover, but response was much better with us, which I am proud of. The fact that we are almost half the price is another bonus for my clients. “Having Worthing Direct also gave me the opportunity to return to my roots, by getting involved in settingup HERE & NOW, delivering 30,000 into homes, and 8,000 copies into pick-up points every month.”

Kaz Hawkins tell Mark Ede about life, ‘Feelin Good’ and her upcoming gig at Worthing Pier Your latest album is ‘Feelin Good’, can you tell us about the ideas behind it? Feelin’ Good is exactly what it says on the tin. A feel good album that crosses genre’s and to suit everybody’s taste, I think. I chose to have a cover song as the title as it represented how I feel as an artist at this point in my career and because our version of it is so very different than anything I have heard before. I wanted this album to secure my band’s sound. The power that they give me mixed with the security and tentativeness they supply when I am vulnerable.

What’s your musical background? What drove you to sing? Born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland and anyone who knows of it will know of the traumatic history. I grew up with bombs and shootings but it was a normality to us living there…but I look at us now and we have as a region come so far. My childhood was also filled with other traumas as I was living through child abuse from a family member. I used music from a young age to escape from all that hurt. I turned to female singers with emotion like Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield etc. They are the reason I sing the way I do. ‘Feelin Good’ was released last year and is due for digital release on 21 Jan. How was the album received? Oh, it was amazing. I knew we had a good album but I was so overwhelmed by the response and still am. The production from David Jamison at Millstone Studios was spectacular and I am so proud that he gets the great feedback from fans and pundits. I’m born for stage so he knows exactly how to get the best from me when I’m uncomfortable in the vocal booth. My band worked so hard for over a year in the studio to make sure it was what they wanted too. We just won album of the year 2016 from the IBBA (International Blues Broadcasters Association) and we were 3rd most played on their charts.

LIVE MUSIC

You have shared the stage with many great artists, including Van Morrison. It’s always a great honour to have the support of my peers in the industry. Sir Van is our local hero, so when he returned to his home in East Belfast in 2012 I was asked to be on the line to support him. I will never forget the experience…I thought it was great that he supported local talent from afar. Who do you look up to musically? Etta James was my biggest influence. I have my right arm tattooed in her memory with ‘keepin the blues alive’. She saved me from myself. Music did and in my darkest times it was Etta’s voice that I cried, laughed and roared at. I don’t think any singer will ever beat that. I lived my life with Etta’s voice so those memories are there forever. Who do you get compared to most often? Of course it’s Etta and what a great compliment. When I belt people always say Janis Joplin, personally I don’t think that but it’s still a compliment. In today’s music people say Adele but I’m old enough to be her mum so she would have gotten inspiration from her mum’s collection and I bet there was Etta in there too. You are respected and liked by the blues community. Is this important to you? Don’t we all want to be liked? The blues community has been so gracious to me, even though my shows are only a percentage of blues. I think they realise that blues is about the soul within and that’s the important bit. My band and I are representing the UK in Memphis & Denmark in 2017 at the International and European Blues Challenges so I am so grateful that my blues is taken seriously and very proud to get to fly the flag for my country around the world. You do a lot of work for charities in Northern Ireland. They say charity begins at home and yes it does, right at our front door. I think everyone should use

their own success to help others… and I have found that by using mine, it has helped so many. Music is a coping mechanism for many who have struggles, hell I know all about this and music has been my rock my whole life. I really wouldn’t be alive without it. I recently became the first female ambassador for Aware NI here in Northern Ireland as I want to use my profile to help people who suffer depression like I did. Well it never leaves you, it’s debilitating when it takes hold of you and I know what that hell is like so 2017 is for continuing to break the silence and barriers that surround mental health and if I can help just one person then my charity really did begin at home. What will you be performing at Worthing Pier in March? I have brand new songs coming to Worthing and I will be switching up the set. In 2017, I will be introducing more singer songwriter tunes. I will be taking to the stage alone mid set and taking people on my personal journey of discovery yet again. I want people to see this other side to me when I’m not being a belter or a rock’n’roller. It’s something I was too frightened to do before but since my USA visit my confidence

Kaz Hawkins has shared the stage with many great artists, including Van Morrison. has grown and I feel I am ready to share the Kaz that nobody has seen yet and Worthing is such a perfect audience that I can’t wait as you will be our first UK tour date and always an emotional one for me with new songs. We will also have a fresher image too, not changed but fresher and hopefully cooler so we’re all looking forward to that. I just hope it doesn’t rain though, I nearly got blown off the pier last year lol. Looking forward to seeing everyone again at one of our favourite places in England thanks to Phil and everyone who made us feel so welcome in 2016. Hip Hop? In Worthing? LIVE MUSIC

The time is now Hi, my name is Elijah. Although if you know me for my music, you might call me Nelson Navarro. Last year I released my debut EP Olive Boy, created and inspired by several of my closest friends. Until pretty recently there wasn’t much hip hop coming out of Worthing, and quite a few of our town’s lyrical flag bearers are people I know and am proud to make music with. There’s not a whole lot of us. I don’t pretend to know all of the talented rappers in our area - but the ones I do know are absolutely smashing it.

Pretty much every pub, club, venue, restaurant and hotel in Worthing had something to offer us on Sat 31 December 2016. Was the Southern Pavilion the only venue that took a well-earned night off? Here’s a mini review of just 3 sell out events that competed for your attention that night. If this selection is not to your taste, take a look at the growing Here & Now listings… Saturday nights are now all right in Worthing. Coast Café Never Stop Alternative 80’s night Coast Cafe saw a sell out crowd of revellers see in the New Year with ‘Never Stop’ Alternative 80’s night, playing music by the likes of The Smiths, The Cure & New Order amongst others. Pete Fij, who used to front Creations Records’ band Adorable as well as Polak (One Little Indian), has been living in Worthing for 14 years and explained how he became a DJ promoter in 2016 by accident: “I was bemoaning the fact that no-one was putting on club nights in Worthing with the kind of 80’s

alternative music I grew up with and love, and it suddenly dawned on me that if no-one else was going to do it, why not me? Never Stop nights have proved a massive hit… so much so, that I’ve branched further afield to other towns, though Worthing and Coast very much remains its spiritual home. I’ve also had the fantastic opportunity to get along great musicians such as Adam Franklin (Swervedriver) & Terry Bickers (House of Love) to DJ alongside me.” The next Never Stop night will be on Sat 18 Feb. facebook.com/ neverstopnights ATOM’s Mother of all Parties NYE with Murdoch’s Crazy Eyes at St. Paul’s On New Year’s Eve the party vibes were high all night long. The sold out crowd soaked up the sound from party-pop band, Murdoch’s Crazy Eyes, who played new and classic covers with DJ Bez playing chart bangers all night. There was a real sense of community throughout the night: a diverse crowd of everyone from ultra-cool 20-somethings to

50-year-old dancers came together to sing, dance and celebrate the new year. A VIP room had an alternative vibe, with an exclusive cocktail bar that dropped R ‘n’ B tunes all night. Darren Neon Artist added a glow to the room with his latest array of artwork, whilst Giuseppes Lite kept the guests well fed. MCE’s lead singer, Dom O’Brien said “I felt so overwhelmed by the fact that all these people wanted to spend the biggest party night of the year listening to us!” ATOM presents The Doors Live Sat 18 Feb, St Paul’s. See atompromotions.co.uk & stpaulsworthing.co.uk Tot Rockin’ Beats at the Assembly Hall. Who’d have thought that the alternative NYE event would be a family rave where knee level tots and a nonagenarian DJ [Vera] come together on the dancefloor to celebrate NYE at 6pm. Dan Flanagan’s Tot Rockin’ Beats lived up to its promise to put families on the dance floor – think family friendly music festival with bar, food stalls by Giuseppes Lite, and every side show imaginable providing plenty for the kids to do – and bonus - no muddy shoes. One Facebook post said “Well done Dan, this afternoon was a triumph. My fave bit was the surprise

Wurlitzer, Mark’s was the music and bar, Flynn’s was the Jenga and Isla’s was the Beefit disco. Everyone happy!” Well done Dan, I wish this event had been around years ago...and I loved the wonderfully surreal Wurlitzer moment too. I find it impossible to speak on any aspect of the music scene in Worthing without mentioning Northbrook College. Right now, nowhere else provides such a hub for creative people here, and one of the prerequisites for any scene is a melting pot where different talents and influences fuse together to form something coherent and new. People I met from Northbrook had a massive impact on me, as you can see from Olive Boy: 3 out of the 4 features were supplied by fellow Northbrook students. The one exception to this, is Lacy (aka Joe White), who stands out by pushing a movement and a positive message in his hometown. His message - #YoungAndHungry defines his hunger for success and a determination to achieve it in a town like Worthing, that can lack the opportunities for young people to do so. Professing his past on tracks like Snuff A Plate and bringing soothing vibes on Alright, Lacy is a rapper with a knack for telling stories and, with a collection of Worthing-shot videos already up on YouTube, is building a catalogue of straight bangers. Another Worthing mainstay with relentless energy is Connor Curry, aka Levz, a solitary stalwart of Worthing’s minute grime scene for the last couple of years. Popping up online with freestyles on YouTube channels 1TimeTV and working with Apex on latest track Have Mercy, up on 2TokeTV. Proudly promoting the only grime nights I’ve ever seen in Worthing, he even teamed up with local band The Etcetera to do a remake of classic Gorillaz hit, Feel Good Inc.. Frequent collaborator with Levz, John Standen aka Kon

has started appearing on Worthing’s burgeoning hip hop radar, with tracks up on Soundcloud, a freestyle on 2TokeTV, and a mixtape in the works to be released later this year. The man behind 2TokeTV is Phobia aka Nathan Scotts who not only designs visuals and cover art for many South Coast MCs but also handles filming and editing videos to upload to his channel, while running newly established clothing brand ICON. Not forgetting producers, CrateZombie aka Chris Bryan is making banging lo-fi beats and uploading videos of instrumentals and MPC performances every week, with a selection of top cartoon and anime visuals to boot. For any scene to succeed venues are key and Bar 42, the go to venue for small and independent shows in Worthing, seems to be the only space for the new wave of artists to perform to their friends and fans. For hip hop - and any new music - to take root it is imperative that we establish enough spaces to rootgive variety and uniqueness to individual performances. We need more late night venues and an eclectic selection of nightlife to grab people’s interest and entice them into our fledgling culture. The scope of hip hop across the South Coast extends both East and West however, with people like

Kayne Warner aka K.A. spitting with dexterous flow in Littlehampton; iDP aka Warren Damerell crafting hip hop and grime beats that have been used by MCs across the country; Alex Goodger aka Guja releasing his debut LP Loud Mouth South out of Hove and Phonetic aka Sade Weaver making serious noise as a rapper who’s proved herself able to school anyone on the mic in Portslade.

In writing this article, it has become clear that as of right now, there is no ‘scene’ in Worthing for hip hop - yet. We’re just getting started. What we need now are more rappers, more DJs, more producers, cameramen and content creators to come to the fore and take our town and the world by storm. The time is now, so let’s build it. If there’s not a scene yet, then there will be.

Then there’s me. On 30 November I released my debut EP Olive Boy; The project features 3 MCs from Worthing, was produced, engineered and mastered by me in my hometown and has gained its prime listenership from Worthing (Soundcloud’s analytics). The launch night was held in Brighton but the crowd was a sea of faces from all over, with support from a huge amount of friends from Worthing, which I am forever grateful for.

Elijah Peart is a producer, performer and multi instrumentalist, born and living in Worthing for 19 years. Want to hear his music? Search for “Olive Boy EP” on Spotify. In the Twenties, Colonel Sir Victor Barker DSO was a fine figure of a man. But the uniform and military bearing concealed a big secret, revealed in a sensational trial at the Old Bailey in April 1929. For ‘Colonel Barker’ had been born a woman. The trial made headline news around the world and its repercussions were felt most keenly throughout Sussex. Rose Collis, author of biography Col Barker’s Monstrous Regiment, is writing a new stage play based on her book. Children’s theatre has always been something that has inspired me, but it wasn’t until I moved to Worthing 4 years ago, that I realised just how culturally vibrant our wonderful town is, and why Worthing is such a great community for families with the things we have on offer. From our theatres to our museum, art galleries, leisure centres and kids clubs at the cinemas, there’s always an exciting adventure just around the corner. One I’m particularly looking forward to is David Walliams’ The First Hippo on the Moon at the Connaught Theatre. I think what’s so great about his writing is that he understands how to appeal to young readers, as well as integrating his mischievous humour which entertains us big kids just as much! When originally writing the story, Walliams said “I have always been fascinated with the space race of the 1960s and wanted to do a spoof on that. I like the idea of hippos going to the moon as they are the animals least likely to. It’s a very visual book, with amazing illustrations by Tony Ross, so it should be a very colourful stage production.”

Walliams has had a lot of involvement in the show, including his own narration which I look forward to hearing. This combined with the creative talents of Les Petits Theatre Company and Les Enfants Terribles will guarantee a show like no other. One that I hope will inspire children to pick up a pen a write some adventures of their own. For any aspiring young writers, Walliams says “I think it’s important you write a story you would like to read. If you like funny stories write a funny story, if you like scary ones write a scary one. You can never guess what it is people want to read, so it’s best you write something for yourself. If other people like it that’s a bonus.” The First Hippo on the Moon 1719 Feb, Connaught Theatre. Booking enquiries: Worthing Theatres box office on 01903 206 206 or visit worthingtheatres. co.uk. The Worthing Bypass This column will not change your love life “This whole world’s just wild at heart and weird on top!” says Laura Dern’s Lula Fortune to Nicholas Cage’s Sailor Ripley in David Lynch’s under-appreciated 1990 movie classic, Wild at Heart. At this time of year, as the dreaded spectre of Valentine’s Day looms large with all the fear and foreboding of Bela Lugosi’s Dracula – shadow cast large across the contours of my mind – I turn to an alternative virtuoso Oscar-winning performance from Nicholas Cage as the alcoholic Hollywood screenwriter drinking himself into oblivion in Leaving Las Vegas. This has nothing to do with an associated boozed-drenched desperation, you understand, but from a sentimental attachment as it was the second film I took the Beloved Hackette to see at the pictures (that’s right young ‘uns, that’s what they’ll always be to people who know what/who Bela Lugosi is/was). The first date was a disaster. Not the film as such, it was something of an understated classic itself – In the Company of Men. Unfortunately, it was also a scathing satire on the nature of misogyny starring a young Aaron Eckhart as ultra-chauvinist Chad. The soon to be Beloved Hackette was a study in seething silence for an hour after the film as I endeavoured to persuade her that it was indeed satirical and was in no way an indication of any dark and devious intention on my part as her prospective next big thing. The silence was only broken as she slipped off her seat in the restaurant afterwards, a hilarious incident proving a prelude to a lifetime of loving laughter at her dyspraxia. In truth it was a terrible mistake (not the fall, that was pure comedy gold). The movie misstep was an error of judgement I wasn’t to repeat for a number of years until

Magneto (not Gandalf for pity’s sake, t’other one) got his kit off in Steve McQueen’s Shame (I know, the title’s a dead giveaway) about a pornography-addicted New York yuppie. This is not a movie to see with your beloved other and certainly not one to see on your own. In fact, judging by the way the admittedly small audience shuffled out shamefully, eyes firmly affixed to the sticky cinema floor, it is not a movie to watch under any circumstances, with or without anyone, ever. Stick to 12 Years a Slave. Less grisly. Thusly the Hacks seldom stray from the sanctity of the local restaurant on Valentine’s Day as our filmic tastes differ wildly – pretentious arty-farty fare she labels my preferences, super hero fluffybumph is how I more accurately describe hers (excuse the condescending nature of that slightly heretical remark, although in my defence she just called me pretentious, so you know, she kind of deserved it…). And this is generally the direction things go in as the Dreaded Day approaches: your faithful Hack flailing wildly to find something vaguely original to entertain herself (and that’s not to mention presents, card messages, roses, love-related commercial tut ad infinitum…) melting down to a blubbering nervous wreck in the process whilst she metaphorically taps her fingers and sighs in frustration at my presumed lack of romantic invention. To hell with it all is what I say, my love. So, you lucky, lucky few, you singletons, you feckless, frivolous bunnies, free of burden and the painfully unrealistic expectations of romantic affiliation: go off and have fun. Away with you: stop mourning the passing of the love light and do something infinitely more fun than freakin’ Valentine’s Day.

AND FINALLY...

We’re ALL wild at heart & weird on top! Nobody likes it really. The best couples can hope for is not to disappoint. Delight in your freedom. Pack yourself off to those theatres of dreams: the Pavilion or the Connaught (mindful, obviously of what you choose to watch – you’re never that alone)… or take a sobering stroll in freezing February along the promenade… or a perennial along the pier… or park yourself on a sea front bench and fill your mind with wonder as you ponder the exorbitant cost of buying a beach hut… or try to figure out why someone decided to park a wind farm in the sea just to ruin your view. Whatever you do, in company or in blissful solitude, just remember this – although in the spirit of that distorted classic I’d twist it slightly – we’re ALL wild at heart and weird on top! Happy Bela Lugosi Day. The Ubiquitous Hack
