WORTHING FOOD & DRINK SCENE 2018

Exciting Times are Ahead SO, WHAT DOES THE YEAR AHEAD have in

store for our town in terms of food and drink?

Last year saw Worthing go from strength to strength, with exciting new eateries, bigger and better food festivals, a blossoming of micro-pubs and the quality of the food and drink offer in town improving all the time. 2018 looks like it’s going to be more of the same! As is the norm for this up and coming coastal resort nowadays, there will be some restaurants opening, some closing and some expanding. We’ve just got a Japanese restaurant, there’s a French bistro on the horizon, numerous chain restaurants in the ongoing “will they, won’t they?” debate around the Montague Quarter and other new developments, and there will be exciting news coming soon from the team behind The Corner House and The Beach House. Vegan offerings at many of the cafes and restaurants in town are increasing to meet the surge in demand.

and grain. Then there’s Silly Moo cider that’s pressed from apples donated from gardens in the local community (well, swapped for cider!) and mixed with the farm’s own orchard apples to give a unique blend, that changes each time… but tastes amazing! On top of that, the farm also grows heritage grains that are then milled into speciality flour. The farm’s sustainable cycle shows innovation, caring and passion… and that’s just one example, Sussex has lots of places like this. Worthing itself boasts a great range of small food producers – Perfectly Preserved’s jams and marmalades have won awards, award-winning stalwarts Vice Puddings and Parklife are both still making their tempting cakes, Brontie & Co produce great chocolate that’s raw and vegan, Charlene’s Chocolate Factory do chocolate too, bread and pastries from The Pantry are legendary and Magpies Magnificent Pies turn out pastrywrapped pieces of heaven.

The Worthing Food & Drink Festival, Green Dreams and the Chilli Fiesta will all be back later in the year and rumours are that Sundowners (street food & music events) will be making a comeback too. Other major food and drink events are also in the pipeline, so watch this space!

Or you can take the food journey back to the source – we’ve fresh fish available on the beaches, great butchers, greengrocers and fishmongers, as well as a burgeoning allotment scene. If you’re in the know, foraging is also a great avenue to explore… just ask local experts.

But it’s not all about eating out, there’s a real buzz about local produce too. One of the interesting things about Brexit has been that people are now looking more closely at where their food comes from and what is available within the region. Sussex is blessed with some top-quality food producers, as famous London restaurants will tell you.

Perhaps you’ll be inspired to make and sell your own food in 2018, or even open a restaurant? There’s always room for one more in this seaside cornucopia!

Within half-an-hour’s drive from Worthing is Trenchmore Farm, where you can find fantastic slow-grown Waygucrossed Sussex beef, fed on grass, cider by-products

ART & CULTURE

Drawn in to the Drop-In Picture Yourself at St Paul’s

HAZEL IMBERT TALKS WITH JUDE BITTON AND FIONA MCVEY OF INCLUSIVE ARTS

ANTONY DICKINSON, ST PAUL’S SUPREMO, has come up with a great idea to

Run by the indefatigable Jude Bitton and Fiona McVey of Inclusive Arts (formerly based in the much missed Heene Gallery), this is a drop-in, all-welcome group, every Friday, hosted by * Sight Support in Rowlands Road. The group includes some partially sighted artists, and provides everyone with a wide range of media to work in.

PORTRAIT EVENT: Friday 23 March, 5-10pm at St Paul’s

Jude explained that they offer a monthly project – looking at an artist, a style, a form, a material - and the group take that off into whatever genre they like. Last month was the Fibonacci sequence, which resulted in spirals created in mosaic, in silk painting, in water colour, and acrylics. Recent starting points have been the work of Modigliani, and of Hokusai –giant waves and cherry blossom! Fiona said that they encourage their artists to visit exhibitions, and have organised some group outings themselves

blow you away in March; local portrait artists are being offered the chance to create in public. Selected artists will produce portraits of 3 sitters (esteemed local characters) over the course of an evening. The event will be open to the public, free of charge.

The bar will be open all evening, and everyone will be able to enjoy an unusual social event, watching artists at work and seeing how the portraits take shape. If this sounds like a challenge, it certainly is; artists rarely work in public. Television has recently presented us with artists working in front of the camera, and being publicly judged. Of course, working in public is old hat for landscape painters, and they quite often wear old hats, it’s true. But starting from scratch on a portrait, under the scrutiny of bystanders will require courage and confidence. Fortunately, the cheerful and welcoming atmosphere of St Paul’s will work to good effect, and the event will provide the artists with support and interest – which they may not often get in their solitary garrets!

WINTER SUNSHINE LIT THE LARGE ROOM, which was full of colour and activity.

Working in companionable peace were the participants of the Friday Mixed Media group.

January’s project was based on polystyrene tiles, with a design cut into them, being used to make prints on fabric and paper, with marble excheeseboards (!) for the inkplates. The heaps of resources included RENEE WEAVER & PAT FIELD recycled items, an important part of Inclusive Art’s ethos. For example the stunning spiral mosaic being completed had shards of wing mirror and recycled blue glass being (carefully) put into place.

The portraits will be judged by a panel, and a favourite selected. The sitters will also choose a favourite to take home. The competition will be open to anyone over the age of 16 with a Worthing/Adur postcode, who must submit via email a portrait they have created in the last 3 years. 15 finalists will be chosen from these entrants. So, portrait artists! Come and be admired and feted. Send your application to curator@stpaulsworthing.co.uk The deadline for entries is Midday 14 Feb 2018. For the rest of us, it’s a date in the diary for a memorable and unique evening out.

Hazel Imbert

This group has exhibited their wide variety of work in Worthing Library, and has also participated in Worthing Artists Open Houses. Jude and Fiona provide creative art opportunities in various venues in Worthing; for example, they run a Sewing Bee, for all levels, at The Rowans, first Thursday of the month at 6.30pm. See Facebook page Inclusive Arts for info and updates.

*First Friday of the month, the group are at St Stephens in Angola Road.

Finance Corner IT’S THE MONTH OF LOVE, but where

It could be taking out a critical illness policy that also covers your children with £25,000 of critical illness as part of the policy, a fantastic level of protection until they are 18 years old. Perhaps it’s finally getting around to doing that Will you keep talking about but don’t get round to. This would ensure that you leave your assets to those you care about and protect your children. It will appoint Guardians and define who would look after your children if you did pass away, so that it’s someone you know and trust rather than your

This could be releasing funds from your own home or gifting an early inheritance, so you can watch family enjoy their pending inheritance in your lifetime. ART & CULTURE

Literary Local IT’S FUNNY HOW PLACES, like

people, seem to go in phases. The energy ebbs and flows, the vibrancy peaks and troughs. Some months it’s all change and go-go-go and others, well, we’re back in sleepy old Worthing where time moves at half the speed of everywhere else. That’s no bad thing, of course. We all need to rest now and then, and Worthing is most definitely hibernating for the winter. It is our duty as inhabitants of this fine place to support it in its necessary slumber, and so it’s appropriate then that February’s selection of literary events is both quiet and gentle. Shh, the town is sleeping. Don’t wake it yet. But the tiny shoots of a new spring are definitely on their way – you just have to look hard enough. The Ropetackle Centre is introducing a new arts portal for 2018, a regular professional development session for those working in the arts to learn new skills and working practices. The first session is on February 17, although full details have yet to be announced. There is also the Worthing Music and Arts Festival running

throughout the month. An arts festival for young people to participate in classes, perform, and compete in their chosen category – with speech and drama featuring heavily. Unless you know someone participating, the WMAAF is likely to pass you by entirely, but it’s there every year, quietly nurturing and growing the new, young talent of the town. And the trusty monthly poetry workshop with Iona Harrison at the Cellar Arts Club gives writers the chance to write, share and discuss their work in a safe and supportive environment. So, despite the cold grey drizzle there’s no excuse – go forth and create, literary Worthingites. Spring will be here soon and your town needs you to blossom.

Control Art Gallery WORTHING’S NEWEST ART GALLERY,

Control Art Gallery opened its doors in December. The gallery is located within the Train of Thought Emporium on North Street. Glenn Langler, who manages the gallery said, “our aim is to showcase art which has a slightly edgy feel; art which you may not find in more conventional galleries and by linking up with Train of Thought we’re able to offer a unique shopping experience combining collectable pop art, vinyl records and vintage clothing. Worthing is a hot bed of creative talent and we are excited to be part of it”. The gallery currently contains works by Worthing based artists such as

Darren West and mr ben as well as limited edition prints by Henry Hate (tattoo artist to Amy Winehouse and Boy George) and other urban and contemporary artists. The gallery aims to grow their portfolio of nationally acclaimed urban and street artists while at the same time support local talent. They also offer gallery space to rent so that local artists can show their work alongside more established artists. BUILD A BLANKET DEN FOR GROWN-UPS

Does anyone really need to see Love Actually for the 50th time? Give the soppy flicks a rest and go for a gory slasher. Just watch anything that doesn’t involve romantic love with an emotionally satisfying and optimistic ending.

Hide away from your adult responsibilities, grab your nearest and dearest and create your own private getaway with a duvet, pile of pillows, supply of snacks and lots of silly games to play by torch light!

DADIFESTO

All you need is... Give Us A Snog, Sweetcheeks

SO, IT IS FEBRUARY, the month that

has greeting cards manufacturers jumping for joy and married men around the world quaking in their boots at the mere thought of how they are going to be judged by the size of their package. Obviously, not that package. But the type of a package that comes up with bows and a large credit card bill attached. But I’m not allowed to write about it. My dearest editor has decreed it so because the mag is already full of ‘L-word’ related stuff. Remember being a kid and being told not to do something, and all you want to do is that exact thing? Well, that is the type of mood I am in. I am singing ‘L word’ songs, while my mind fills with terror; for having just got over Christmas and my wife’s

Anyway, I digress. February is also famous for other things. So don’t get down if you are not ‘L-worded’ up. Here’s some other shortest month of the year things that can put a smile on your lovely little faces.

birthday I am again challenged to come up with a present idea that will knock her little boots off. No pressure then…

February 11th kicks off Worthing’s Half Marathon. This is where hundreds of middle-aged men in Lycra shorts, the super fit, the sort of fit and not at all fit and either very brave or down-right crazy souls take to the prom to beat their personal bests and raise money for some cracking good causes. Go cheer them on while feeling terrible that your own New Year resolution to go running ended on the 3rd of Jan with a short sprint to the offie to grab another bottle of Gin to mark the kids going back to school. February 13th is Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday as it is otherwise known. So, you can over indulge your small people with all things flipping, lemon and sugar-related, while peeling bits of batter of off the kitchen ceiling for the next couple of weeks. That will teach you for trying to show-off!

from Mars’ and thanking the Lord for popular Indie/Britpop groups. We recognise this day is marked in other ways too. February 16th marks the Chinese New Year, (this one being the ‘Year of the Dog’) so why not build yourself a dragon and parade around the town letting off firecrackers to ward off bad luck and evil spirits? Or, if you are so inclined, you are very welcome to pop round my house with gifts, such as fruit, sweets, cakes and red envelopes with cash, called hóng bāo. February 18th marks the birthdays of Hip-Hop God Dr Dre, Disco God John Travolta, 80s Movie It Girls Molly Ringwald and Cybil Shepard and the all-round heartthrob swoon-fest, that is Matt Damon. That has to be worth feeling cheerful about, has it not? So, there you have it. Plenty of things to do to take your mind away from all things ‘L-word’ related. Until next time pop-pickers. Keep it real, keep em’ peeled and keep on keeping on.

On February 14th you can avoid the obvious and instead celebrate ‘Ash Wednesday’. This is where people of all ages run around singing the 90s smash hit ‘Girl

cold, car window. Blurred, soaring traffic flew past and as I scanned the landscape beyond, I saw it, its chapel towering over the horizon atop the flourishing South Downs countryside – Lancing College. A home fit for an imaginary fairy princess.

PHOTO: KAT NAISH

Driving past, its exquisite Gothic Revival style grandeur left me bewitched. As a child, not only did it bring a (rare) few minutes of peace to noisy, excited car journeys, I felt its enchanting presence bring bedtime stories to life. Evidently, others felt the same, since it was once considered as a location for the Harry Potter film series. Founded in 1848 by the extraordinary Revered Nathaniel Woodard (1811-1891), also the founder of Hurstpierpoint and Ardingly Colleges, Lancing College Chapel reaches 90ft into the Sussex sky, making it the largest school chapel in the world. Not content to hold just one notable distinction, the stunning rose window designed by Stephen Dykes Bower (completed in 1977) is largest in England at 32ft in diameter.

Head to Cissbury Ring to see the NEW FOREST PONIES Take sausage baguettes and hot chocolate in a flask. FREE The ALDINGBOURNE COUNTRY CENTRE, a bit further out but worth the trip, 15 miles from Worthing. Woodland walks, open farm (cuddle guinea pigs!), ride-on toys, castle playground. £14 for family of four, entry fee supports The Aldingbourne Trust charity. Worthing Mums and Dads is a Facebook page for local parents and carers to find information about what’s on offer in Worthing.

I encourage you to visit the chapel, if only to experience the arresting wonderment certain to take hold of you as you pass through the entrance into the colossal clerestory – before remembering all before you is right on your doorstep, in fascinating Adur.

You can visit the chapel Mon - Sat between 10am and 4pm, or Sun from 12 - 4pm. I’d also recommend keeping an eye on the excellent events hosted throughout the year; consider their inspiring Inter-House Music Competition, 8 Feb FREE, or the College Singers and Student Voices performance, 23 Feb, exhibiting solo works, a chorus and orchestra, £9.20 – £11.35. To book, head to Eventbrite and search for ‘Lancing College’.

Sofa So Good? I like to give myself a new challenge for the New Year, something to see me through the dark early months of the year. As experience has taught me when (if!) I manage to accomplish these challenges, I’ll always be able to look back proudly on my year. LIKE MANY PEOPLE,

LOOKING FOR A GYM OFFER? – see P12

For anyone who took up running as a new year’s resolution, or decided to challenge themselves with a further distance or a faster time, congratulations! No matter how slowly you are going out there, you’re lapping everyone who is sitting at home on the sofa. With Worthing Half Marathon on 11 February as my next event, I have been out before, during or after work in all conditions to get my runs in. I’ve found that a simple plan is much easier to stick to, and would highly recommend for any beginners to use any of the Couch to 5k apps out there as an excellent starting point, (rumour has it your editor has left the couch!) while for casual runners looking to run their first big race, free online plans are a simple google search away. The key to keeping injury free is to keep the pace low for the first few weeks before building intensity, and having a good pair of shoes. I cannot stress enough the difference a good pair of running shoes makes, fitted by a professional at your local running shop rather than bought off the internet, that way blood-blisters lie! Ben is running for bloodwise.org.uk in this year’s half marathon. worthinghalf.co.uk

THOMAS H GREEN’S MUSICAL TIME MACHINE IT’S STRANGE TO THINK OF THE BANDS who played

The Worthing Gig Scene

Worthing in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. In fact, it seems almost unbelievable now, the names that performed at the Pavilion and at the Assembly Hall. How’s this, just for starters: Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Ike & Tina Turner, Pink Floyd, The Supremes, David Bowie, Janis Joplin, The Who, Bo Diddley, Genesis, Marvin Gaye, Jefferson Airplane, Black Sabbath, The Beach Boys, Supertramp, The Temptations, Cream, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Byrds, Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention, Steppenwolf… Steppenwolf! Leather-clad and playing ‘Born to Be Wild’ where visitors now eat cake and drink tea at the end of the pier! Promoter Freddy Bannister and his wife Wendy are primarily remembered for kick-starting UK festival culture. It was they who put on the Bath Festivals of 1969 and 1970, which inspired Somerset dairy farmer Michael Eavis to start Glastonbury, and it was they whose Knebworth events defined ‘70s rock gatherings. However, before all that, they developed their knack for promotion running concerts along the south coast. Bands would play a string of gigs, working their way from Folkestone in the east to Bournemouth in the west, and every Thursday night they hit Worthing.

…He was very young, in tight velet pants, and you almost couldn’t hear him for the screaming girls...

1966-1972

The Time Machine will return to these gigs in future, in more detail and from a variety of angles, but to set the ball rolling, we spoke to Robert ‘Yak’ Yates who, from age 13 to 18, would attend almost every week. Then a schoolboy from Lancing, the son of a yacht captain and a secretary, he’d take the bus to Worthing every Thursday with friends, and watch a mind-boggling array of now legendary musicians. The first gig he saw was Cat Stevens in the autumn of 1966, just after he’d released his first single, ‘I Love My Dog’. “He was very young, in tight velvet pants,” Yates recalls, “and you almost couldn’t hear him for the screaming girls, ten layers of them in front of the stage.” Hooked, he returned the next week for the Moody Blues. Then the week after that. And the week after that. And most weeks until 1972. Along the way he caught Jimi Hendrix twice, the first time shortly after the Experience were formed in autumn 1966. The prime audience in Worthing

Do you have any memories of music life in Worthing? We’re interested in stories and scenes from any era, from the ‘30s and ‘40s to the ‘90s and Noughties. Perhaps you have a photograph of yourself or a local band or occasion? We’d love to feature it and chat about it. Please email to Thomas at editorial@hereandnowmag. co.uk (Head up Thomas H Green’s Musical Time Machine). then were teenage mods and Yates describes himself as “a kind of a pretend mod, a little school boy in a target teeshirt and a parka”.

ROY AT SEASIDE RADIO

“The mods wanted to hear soul music,” he recalls, “and one band who played regularly was [Brit-Jamaican outfit] Jimmy James and the Vagabonds. We all turned up and there was a blackboard outside. It said ‘Sorry, Jimmy James Cancelled. Replacement Band From London: The Jimi Hendrix Experience.’ This wild man came onstage and started doing these incredible guitar feedback numbers and guitar tricks, playing the guitar with his teeth. Most of the mods walked out saying, ‘This is crap, it’s not soul music.’ In the end only 40 people were left, absolutely transfixed.”

STEPPENWOLF

He saw Pink Floyd twice, when they were still led by Syd Barrett (“Fantastic, the first truly psychedelic band with a lightshow”) and The Who many times, controversially suggesting, “They were almost the house band in Worthing – it wouldn’t surprise me if they played Worthing more than Brighton.”

ROB YATES EARLY 1970S

He also saw many ‘70s greats before they were famous; Jimmy Page playing his guitar with a violin bow while still in The Yardbirds, The Herd with a very young Peter Frampton, and The Jeff Beck Group featuring an unknown singer called Rod Stewart (“very blues based – what an amazing voice”). But he also rated some acts that are now less well known, such as Family, The Alan Bown Set, The Move (“their singer, Carl Wayne, smashed up a television onstage with a huge axe”), Brian Auger and the Trinity (“with Julie Driscoll on vocals”), Simon Dupree and the Big Sound, and local soul-pop covers act, The Total. Meanwhile, the weirdest gig he ever saw there was “the American hippy Tiny Tim, doing ‘Tiptoe Through the Tulips’ and other songs from the ‘30s and ‘40s in a strange highpitched falsetto while playing the ukulele.” Yates’ favourite Worthing gigs include Genesis with Peter Gabriel “singing in a succession of masks”, Janis Joplin (“Just incredible”) and Peter Green’s original Fleetwood Mac but, as he puts it, “The number one, no doubt about it, was David Bowie in the Assembly Hall. It was the week before ‘Ziggy Stardust’ was released [June 1972] and very short notice, only a few days prior

publicity. They wanted a dress rehearsal of the Ziggy show for a typical English audience in a not-too-big rock venue, to see how it would go. Bowie came down with about three coachloads of entourage; wife, family, all the trendy Kings Road hippies from London. They filled up one side of the Assembly Hall. I’d seen him previously a couple of times as a folk singer doing Jacques Brel numbers with his guitar, but this was something else, this was a blinder. It was the first time I’d seen stage-diving, he came out dressed wildly, walked on the shoulders of the audience, his family all dancing like crazy, his wife Angie next to me going completely bananas. They infected everyone. I wasn’t a great dancer but even I joined them. Best gig I ever saw.” By 1972 Robert ‘Yak’ Yates, having embraced the hippy lifestyle, left Britain to live in Ibiza. He drifted back across Europe over a period of years, living in Germany, Holland and the south of France, before settling, aged 26, with a Danish wife in her homeland. He took a degree in sociology and spent his working life in social psychiatry before retiring a year ago. He’s now 65 and still lives in Denmark Chatting to him is the start of the Time Machine and Here & Now’s chronology of Freddy Bannister’s Worthing concerts, featuring as many memories as we can gather. Just for starters, Robert Yates is “99% certain” he saw The Doors in Worthing. Is that possible? And what of James Brown, did he play? Or Otis Redding? Did you see them? Or any of the bands mentioned? What do you remember? Drop us a line.

WHAT’S ON IN WORTHING Noel Coward with West End impresario Jack Waller and Peggy Mount plus Richard Coleman in the background

Mind of a Playwright DELVING INTO THE MIND OF ONE OF THE WORLD’S GREATEST PLAYWRIGHTS “My body has certainly wandered a good deal, but I have an uneasy suspicion that my mind has not wandered enough.” Noël Coward Sir Noël Peirce Coward is recognised worldwide for being one of Britain’s greatest playwrights, and with his iconic comedy masterpiece Private Lives coming to the Connaught Theatre this March, I thought it would be a great opportunity to delve into the life of this prestigious English gentleman to see just what made him so significant.

Noël Coward was a man of many talents, not only did he write more than 50 plays in his lifetime (1899-1973), but he was also a composer, director, actor and singer. Interestingly enough he actually cast himself as the charming character Elyot in the original production of Private Lives, one of his most highly-regarded plays that took him only three days to write! Having had such a large quantity of his work published, with plays such as Hay Fever,

Design For Living and Present Laughter

entering the regular theatre repertoire, Noël Coward inevitably had a significant impact on culture in the English speaking word. Time magazine said that he had a unique “sense

of personal style, a combination of cheek and chic, pose and poise”. Coward actually developed his iconic staccato style voice from an early age as his mother was deaf; he acquired this style of speech to help her understand what he was saying.

He became well known for his iconic look, the ‘Coward Image’,

which became so recognised that a poster advertising the revival of Private Lives in 1968 used a caricature of Coward rather than the stars of the show! In 1969, Noël Coward was knighted, and he was then elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. The beautiful Albery Theatre in London was renamed the Noel Coward theatre in his honour in 2006. The historic image below shows Noël on one of his many visits to the Connaught Theatre in Worthing, alongside stars of the West End. London Classic Theatre present a dazzling new production of Noël Coward’s Private Lives at the Connaught Theatre on 6-7 March. For more information visit worthingtheatres.co.uk

Mark Knowles Original Music of Bar 42 tells us “…we’ll eventually have a self contained bar and patio and our tiny stage will be about 2 feet thinner but about 5 feet deeper. We are planning to have a purpose built stage area with cool stage lighting with capacity in the back room increasing from around 45-50 to around 80 allowing us to get bigger bands in the future. We’re doing a bit of refurb in the front of the bar too but nothing too drastic. We’ll be closed for 5 weeks and plan to re-open officially on 9 March. Then in March we can hopefully start putting on some more epic gigs like the Black Peaks and Drewsif Stalin. Future plans include more seating inside, improved patio outside and maybe even some heating!”

An evening overflowing with groove-ridden-beats, soul-jam-shakers plus dance-floor funksters including your resident DJ’s Inappropriate Handclap + support band Kat & Co. BBC Radio 6 pragmatic and animated music show host, Mr Craig Charles is off duty from filling our airwaves for the night and will be transporting his ‘trunk of funk’ to Worthing for your pleasure. Serving up a trifle of 60’s and 70’s gems, we guarantee chic, unruly dancing and a belly full of good times. Mr Charles is ready to take you on an intergalactic journey through the illustrious eras, when Funk, Disco and Soul reigned all! For one night only! • Bar and Refeshments available

Joe Bunn’s Bardic Trials: The End of Winter THERE ARE TWO HARBINGERS that

signify the end of the Winter season for me. The first is when I walk past the Guildbourne Centre to see the remnant limbs of Worthing’s Christmas Tree crumpled in a dismembered heap and cordoned off with red and white tape, like someone murdered the Christmas season. I sometimes like to lay wreaths of mistletoe and transcripts of festive arguments nearby to show my respect. The second harbinger is the dismantling of the Steyne Garden ice rink. I used to live next to Steyne Gardens and I would shed a single, frost-licked tear every day as I saw more and more yellowing grass revealed beneath where the ice rink was on my way home from work. The opposite of this feeling, however, is the joy at seeing the rink set up, showing that it can’t be long until Christmas is here again, the smile on my face when I would see the Mayor break a bottle of champagne against the side of a Zamboni, and then take the inaugural Bambi-walk on the ice. So I think, to stem to flow of sadness at the sight of a jigsaw puzzle of faux-ice pieces being bundled into

the back of a van, we need to replace it with a different sight for every season. What follows are those sights.

SPRING

Why not build a huge temporary Butterfly house over the entirety of the Gardens? But instead of butterflies, we could instead have moths, to give it that quintessentially Worthing feel. You could visit the Moth House every day, and they would be trained to nibble off a little more of your clothing every time, so you would be beach ready for the hotter Summer months.

SUMMER

I know we have the yearly inland sandpit, but to complement that summer sight, why don’t we add the Steyne Gardens inland SEA. Simply cover it with a dome and use a huge pipe from the nearby ocean to sluice over a load of ocean. Provide scuba gear for the local street drinkers, or alternatively fill the dome with whiskey instead. Drunken sea life would be an incredible draw. Or perhaps Tequila would more suit the salty atmosphere, plus lemon would go very well with the fish.

AUTUMN

The Autumn sight is simple, and solves the problems

that the leaking seawater would have wreaked on the grass of Steyne Gardens. We spend most of the year growing an exceptionally large pumpkin, one that is 4 storeys high, and as wide as the gardens. We place this titanic pumpkin on the grass and carve a scary Halloween face on the front. As Autumn cracks on, we take all the fallen orange and red leaves and fill the pumpkin with them. As the pumpkin begins to rot, so too will the leaves inside, creating mulch and compost. By the time the month is done, the pumpkin and leaves will have disintegrated to such

a degree that it will fertilise the fresh grass seed we will scatter over the top. The grass will grow, ready for the ice rink to be replaced on top, to turn it back to yellow. And there we have it, Bardwatchers, the three additional seasonal sights for Worthing’s Steyne Gardens. It’s a thought, anyway, and if you have any better ideas don’t hesitate to shout them into my face in the street. Everyone else does, anyway.

See you next time

THE WORTHING BYPASS

This column will not change your love life AS VALENTINE’S DAY rears its ugly head with its

usual self-serving, smug array of tacky love hearts, overpriced roses and sky-high restaurant charges, it is time to reflect once again on the nature of love and what it means to be human… Hope that was as good for you as it was for me.

Sixteen years on and we’re still all set: maybe next year, maybe next decade. To offset the cackling hordes of relatives intent on shackling me to the present pan hoarder, I have settled upon a thoughtful riposte.

Now on to business. Yes, I get ‘romance’. The Beloved Hackette has felt the full force of my winsome ways, even succumbing to a windswept seafront proposal that would melt the most cynical of hearts. We had mooted the heresy in directionless chitter-chatter down the years and in all truth felt ill-inclined to go through the whole marriage jamboree/nightmare. Sound judgement decreed she did not want to sacrifice her sanity by undertaking a binding contract with the Ubiquitous Hack, whilst yours truly had a life-long aversion to institutional rigmarole, especially the variety that costs money. Well, dear Hackolyte, that all changed for reasons I no longer care to remember. In previous conversations she had informed me – as wisely as ever – that the only good reason to get married would be to receive engagement pressies. She especially had her eye out on a fresh set of pots and pans.

…We shall not rush into anything, without first doing nothing... Like all good prospective suitors, I was a good listener (this is not true, not by a long shot); I just happened to remember that line because she insisted on reminding me repeatedly that eggs were not meant to stick like superglue to the surface of the frying pan. So I said it, straight out: “Fancy getting some new pots and pans?” I can hear the collective “aww, isn’t he sweet?” I would have gone down on one knee on the wet sand but the now sadly deceased love of my life – a 15 stone Mastiff – would have taken such action as a provocative gesture and had me eating sand and seaweed whilst jumping on my winded, flailing frame. Lord above I loved that dog. Any road up, she said yay and we were all set for the big day. Yippee.

38

| February 2018 | HERE & NOW

“The first decade of our engagement,” I proclaim, whilst metaphorically sucking on a pipe and gazing wistfully into a long-distant past that never existed, “was a getting to know you period.” My audience, particularly the biological mother (I have no other but I’m always fighting against her natural inclination to disown me), is unsettled. This pleases me no end. “This decade,” I continue, ignoring her protestations by waving away the grandchild ultimatum with a cursory “you’ve got enough already and step-kids count the same, or at least cost the same,” before in true statesman mode, I announce “is all about reflection and contemplation… Are we really compatible, I ask myself?” (this is true, I do ask myself this and we clearly are not, agreeing only that I am consistently errant whilst the Beloved Hackette is, in her own words, “occasionally mistaken, never wrong,” as she channels Mary Poppins, or is that Penelope Keith?). “Anyway, a good period of reflection and contemplation is always healthy,” I reassure my only mother, adopting the most patronising tone imaginable. “The next decade,” I continue, ignoring her protestations that we should do it for the

children, “will be one of action and decisiveness,” before pulling the rug from under her unwisely weighty expectation by doubling back on myself, “creating the space for us to make a decision, whatever that may be. The lesson,” I sermonise relentlessly, pursing my lips whilst holding the index finger aloft, as school-mam-like as I can muster, “is that we shall not rush into anything, without first doing nothing.” Doing nothing, so often derided as the curse of much-maligned procrastinators, is an overlooked source of heady delight. It always pops up as the first option on a business case and is rapidly overlooked in favour of points five or six about being the sector-leading provider of ‘blahblah-boring-blah’. A flotilla of consultants are herded in to recommend new models of working that are reconstituted from 70’s prototypes but dressed up in new Millennium lingo (I’m sorry, the new Millennium is indeed still frightfully new to me) and the usual soul-destroying restructure merry-go-round sucks the life out of real people pretending to give two hoots about a system that is clearly crap. “Should have stayed with the old set-up” is bandied about by water-cooler wise-crackers until the new regime is ousted following a systematic review that picks up on point two of the last review recommending updating the old system. Same thing happens again until some wit suggests that the old, old system worked best so might as well try that again. Doing nothing, it’s the future – for me and, of course, the Worthing Bypass. Fortunately, it’s the only thing the Beloved Hackette and I agree on, which is why I love her.
