THE COLLABORATIVE ISSUE
Come Together, Right Now THE FIRST PIECE I WROTE FOR THIS MAGAZINE in
2016 featured a small cross section of my local heroes, people who make cool things happen in our town. When you talk to them though, they’ll tell you that rarely do what they do all by themselves: to put on the gigs, plays, parties, comic-cons and other events that filled the Here & Now listings this last year, you need people. Lots of people: to plan, organise, design artwork, create spaces, set up stages, PA and lighting systems, stewarding, answering queries, getting permission, marketing and more. And much of the work required to start up new projects isn’t paid work. So people and groups of people need to come together. Happily for us, that’s exactly what’s happening. People of Worthing (and Adur!) can be immensely generous and enthusiastic with their time and money for a worthwhile cause. That’s one reason 40,000 people were able to flock into Worthing and enjoy a massive, free firework display by the Worthing Lions, Lantern Parade and more for the Tide of Light this November. The Tide of Light Community group said: “We
have evolved in 5 years to be the biggest event on the South Coast. That is no mean feat, and actually you have done that. By coming out in your thousands, supporting the event and taking part in all that goes on.” They also thanked their organisers, and “our amazing sponsors and volunteers who actually bring the plans to life on the night making over 100 people working together to bring this party to town.” “This event is truly a collective working together.”
And it turns out that working together not only makes much more possible, it also can unlock our favourite F-word - FUNDING. Worthing and Adur Fund, run by the local Chamber of Commerce has helped many of the local groups that make our seaside life just a little bit more fun: Circus Seen and Worthing Superstar Arts are just two of the groups who have received help this year. The collaboration project I’m most involved in this year has managed to get funding from the Arts Council, via Worthing and Adur Trust, from the Community Chest and from Worthing Town Centre Initiative. It’s a music and visuals project for the sometimes overlooked Worthing youth by four partners: Worthing’s creative hub Colonnade House, Brighton-based youth music charity AudioActive, video production specialists As Described and Northbrook MET music, sound, and
art students, and it’s called #Scratchpad. #Scratchpad is a Music Production, Vocal and Live Visuals Project for young people in Worthing. You may have already seen or heard about the Taster sessions that are taking place in Worthing, Shoreham and Fishersgate Youth Centres, as well as at Northbrook MET. The project itself takes place at Colonnade House, which will be transformed for #Scratchpad into a video installation and listening booth by As Described, who create live visuals for bands including Beardyman, Portishead, The Bays and the Heritage Orchestra. AudioActive will have DJ’s and Music Producers on site to help participants make music to accompany the visuals. Scratchpad will be in residence at Colonnade House, Worthing for six weeks from 15th January 2018 with sessions on Wednesdays and Thursdays – 4-6pm for 14-18 year olds and 6.30 – 8.30pm for 19-25 year olds. While participants are working on their music they can also develop their visual identity and create performance visuals, and people will be able to hear and see the work in progress as they pass Colonnade House. In March and April there will also be opportunities for performances in outdoor locations and venues in Worthing, plus a music industry day bringing venues, producers and musicians together to kickstart Worthing’s live music scene. Adam Joolia, CEO of AudioActive said:
“We’re thrilled to be working on Scratchpad in collaboration with Northbrook MET & Colonnade House. It’s promising to be a really exciting project and with some amazing artist mentors already on board including SpectraSoul, Phonetic, As Described and a very special guest t.b.a; young and emerging music producers, vocalists, musicians & VJ’s will get top notch support to create, record and perform new work. For a while now, AudioActive have been laying foundations towards some pretty major developments in Worthing, so we’re really excited to be getting a project off the ground from which we can build longer term.” Sign up for a free space on #Scratchpad on audioactive.org.uk/sign-up-for-scratchpad/

THE COLLABORATIVE ISSUE CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5 THIS YEAR, SUSSEX CHOIRS will be
collaborating too. The successful ‘Three Choirs’ event will return to St.Paul’s in June, with Gospel choirs from Brighton, Lewes and Worthing. Amanda Mitchell the organiser, said
“The collaboration element of bringing three different vocal groups from three towns together makes for unexpected results, and that’s exciting!” Worthing’s own Spring Into Soul Community Choir, whose own concert, on Saturday 3 February at St Paul’s will try to top the £1000 they were able to raise at last year’s Winter Concert for Chestnut Tree children’s hospice.
Collaborations abound between educators and business in our area. Last week I found myself at meeting at the Sanditon Conference Centre, a great new venue in the grounds of Worthing College. With me, nearly thirty school, college and university careers advisors and businesses, all invited by Rebecca Tonks, the Worthing-based Senior Enterprise Co-ordinator of Coast to Capital, one of 39 Local Enterprise Partnerships in the UK, assigned by the government to boost the economy and education where we live. Paul Riley, Principal of Worthing College made a point about wanting to work together more with partners to encourage more of our young people to stay and live in Worthing, rather than all disappearing when they go to university or into work. Rebecca Tonks said about Coast to Capital:
“We want to be the bridge between the
education and business worlds in the Worthing Community”, and part of this means bringing
together all the relevant local education and employer groups. They are funding all kinds of projects from large infrastructure building to work experience for students, one example being the Greenpower project at Oak Grove College, where students are building and racing electric cars for fun, and in the process learning engineering. If you’re an employer or educator and want to build links, you should get in touch with the friendly team at Coast to Capital on the website coast2capital.org.uk You’ll read much more about Worthing coming together throughout this and further issues, including great work
by Blueprint 22, where young adults are supported to run their own projects, the collaboration of sustainability organisations, including the growing of a new orchard and the sharing of ‘waste’ food at The Haven in Homefield Park, and the hugely important growth of new, often digital-based businesses collaborating in places like the Sphere and Freedom Works (where you’ll find Here & Now), and more art-based work at Colonnade House. There’s only so much space and time each month, so we will have missed out some exciting local collaborations. Tell us, and we’ll include you next time. In the meantime, come together, right now.

Young City Reads YOUNG CITY READS 2018: 1 MARCH - 18 MAY 2018 ONE TOWN. One book. A thousand
conversations…
Young City Reads is a simple and effective concept to encourage reading. One book is chosen for the whole community to read, discuss and creatively engage with. The 2018 chosen book is Greg James and Chris Smith’s Kid Normal.
A CELEBRATION OF SHARED READING Young City Reads started off down the coast in Brighton in 2013 to
encourage schools and classes there to experience the pleasures of shared reading. Now for the second year running, our schools can take part. Participating classes get free weekly e-bulletins and activities to complete as a great way for classes to get excited about a book and to experience the benefits of shared reading and the fun it brings. Primary school teachers and classes can register online free and agree to read Kid Normal together in class. Starting on World Book Day on 1 March 2018, Worthing schools can travel to the Young City Reads celebration event
Talk: ‘The Most Dangerous Weapon in the World’ at the Brighton Festival featuring the authors live on 18 May. For further info see cityreads.co.uk.
ABOUT THE BOOK When Murph Cooper rocks up to his new school several weeks into the beginning of term, he can’t help but feel a bit out of his depth. And it’s not because he’s worried about where to sit, and making friends, and fitting in, or not knowing where the loos are. It’s because his mum has enrolled him at a school for superheroes by mistake. It’s time for Kid Normal to become a hero!

| January 2018 | HERE & NOW
LITERARY LOCAL Retreat from Writers’ HQ runs monthly at Freedom Works and is £35 for a day of writing, eating, tea drinking, motivation, bum-kicking and general literary joy.
LIT EVENTS FOR LIT PEOPLE AT THE TIME OF WRITING, there are
few venues with literary dates in the calendar for January.
JANUARY IS A FUNNY OLD TIME. It’s
too grey to muster the enthusiasm to do anything in the actual real outside world, the bank balance is way too thin after Christmas and New Year to go on adventures, but yet there’s that familiar craving; the sense of a new beginning, the sense that this year I’ll do better, I’ll be better. And all too often it comes to nothing because the day-to-day grind of life begins again and the excitement of a beginning is subsumed in slog of the middle and also ugh the weather. Seriously UK, learn to sun. There is, however, a sure fire, easy and enjoyable way to be better and remain better all while wrapped in a cosy blanket with a nice steaming cup of hot chocolate: and that is to read. Yes, ladies and Worthingites, it is scientifically proven that immersing yourself in literary pursuits rewires your brain for the better, makes you more compassionate and empathetic, makes you smarter AND also makes you sexier (disclaimer: no peer review
We’re looking for Worthing authors who have trad published books out in 2018. Give us a shout if that’s you because we’d love to feature you and your work on this ‘ere page. Email editorial@ hereandnowmag.co.uk and head up Literary Local.
available for the latter, only empirical data.) And so Here & Now presents to you, Worthing’s finest literary bolt holes for socially awkward wordy types with a penchant for wingback chairs and open fires:
FAVOURITE WRITEY-READY HIDING PLACES THE CORNER HOUSE ON LYNDHURST ROAD wins 10 literary points for
creating the perfect wood burner/ wingback chair situation just to the left of the bar. It’s quiet enough during the week and Sunday evenings to get yourself a whisky mac, snuggle in by the fire and disappear into literary land. I’m sure they won’t mind if you take a blanket and move in.
So, a message to event organisers: we want more please! More author talks, more spoken word nights, more reading groups, more writing groups, more indie theatre. Give it to us, baby! We’re ready and waiting! HOWEVER! There is plenty on the horizon so go like these guys on Facebook or sign up to a newsletter or etch it on the back of your hand in indelible ink:
City Reads and Young City Reads launches in March and is a wonderful time of collective reading, talking about reading, reading some more, and talking about reading some more. What could be better? Keep an eye on Collected Works or Worthing Libraries for updates. And finally, speaking of libraries, good old Worthers Library has regular reading groups for adults on the fourth Friday of the month, first Monday of the month, and first Tuesday of the month. There’s Storytime for under-5s every Saturday and an Asperger reading group on the second Friday of the month. We heart libraries <3.

Father and Daughter Exhibition LOCAL ARTISTS BAMBI GOODMAN AND GARY GOODMAN will have
and a dog’. Both artists portray women and animals as their main subjects. Gary observed that some of the work was ‘sexy’, but we all agreed that Worthing could cope.
I interviewed them at MET, and they told me about how this exhibition had come about: Gary said that, since childhood, Bambi and he had worked together, taking it in turns to add to a drawing or painting. They wrote poetry and stories in the same fashion, so they have always had a collaborative relationship.
I am already intrigued by this pair and their close association, and yet separate and distinct artistic personalities; a long collaborative relationship with playful and serious elements. Shared influences, like Van Gogh, Bob Dylan – the title of their show comes from ‘Planet Waves’ – shared experience, both familial and professional, like their joint exhibition in Tokyo in 2015. It makes me curious to see their work side by side.
their work on show from 10 February until 30 June, in the Studio Gallery.

Visitors to their exhibition will be able to discern common themes, and even though their styles are quite distinct, the artists told me that there are connections which weave the pieces together. They said that people read a lot into their work, so I asked what sort of feelings they thought it provoked. Gary came up with ‘melancholy’, and Bambi went for ‘sweet and sensitive’, ‘raw nerve ends ‘were mentioned and we discussed what ‘sentimentality’ might mean here; visitors may find strains of melancholy; there is an air of oddness, certainly, in seemingly straightforward subjects like ‘a girl
There are plans to include collaborative working sessions and poetry readings in association with this exhibition, and details will be available in due course. I think visitors are going to be fascinated and delighted by the work of these two remarkable local artists, and the long run means plenty of opportunity to visit and enjoy it.

MY COMMUNITY MATTERS
Transition Town Worthing THIS MONTH PAULINE CORY, Transition Town Worthing (TTW),
provides the My Community Matters update. TTW is an inclusive organisation, working with other like-minded groups who do awesome things for the Worthing community! The friendly group of people at TTW welcome you to join them in activities in and around Worthing.
Did you know that living sustainably can save you money? YOU CAN SAVE MONEY by living more sustainably and you
can take part in some exciting local initiatives that help create a greater sense of community in our town. 1. Visit Sam, our energy adviser, at St Paul’s Centre, Chapel Road, Worthing any Wednesday between 10.30am and 3pm and find out how he has managed to help some people save hundreds of pounds on fuel bills. Pop in for some free, impartial advice. You can also help others in the community by training with Sam to be an energy adviser yourself.
Diary Dates
3. Have you tried growing your own food? It can save you £’s! No garden or don’t know how? Join our community garden scheme and learn new skills plus take home free fruit and veg. Or pop along to Winter Warmers at The Haven (see below) for great company and free food, kindly donated by Morrison’s and organised by Kate, one of our lovely volunteers. 4. Come along to our Annual Seed Swap and Spring Fair to swap or buy plants and seeds and there’ll be stalls, talks, a pop-up cafe, and a whole lot more. Oak Grove College, The Boulevard, BN13 1JX. Sat 10 Feb, 12noon - 4pm.
For details of all community events and projects, visit ttworthing.org
GETTING TO KNOW YOU NOVEMBER SAW THE LAUNCH of a new pop-up event at The
Haven, our community garden, nestled in the heart of Worthing in Homefield Park (next to the tennis courts). The project aims to utilise the fantastic communal facilities we have there by cooking up waste food, kindly donated by Morrisons, to share with members of the local community (for free!).
Kate Verrell, TTW Volunteer
Winter can be an especially hard time for many of us, as the days draw shorter and the temperature plummets, costs rise and many struggle to make ends meet. Our aim for these events is to offer solutions, through coming together in an open way and welcoming people back into the heart of their community, together building strength and resilience in these testing times. We have hot food cooked on the open fire as well as freshly made pizzas cooked in the cob pizza oven. So please come on down, find out a bit more about this project and the other activities that happen in The Haven; we would love for you to join us! The next event will take place on 21 January between 11am-4pm.
2. Visit properties open to the public at our Eco Open Houses & More event on 21-22 April and find out how to save money on water bills (if you are on a meter), fuel bills, and avoid excess waste. We will also look at flood prevention. Pick up an event brochure early April from St Paul’s and find out how you can take part in this enjoyable, interesting, informative community event.
Another exciting event in Worthing is being planned for January in Longcroft Park, Woodpecker Way, Durrington. The Friends of Whitebeam Woods, along with Breathing Spaces, Food Pioneers, TCV Worthing, TTW and members of the local community are coming together to plan a traditional style orchard, to be planted in Longcroft Park and be open for all the community to take care of and enjoy. For more details check out ‘events’ on TTW’s Facebook page or website.

Hairless Biker
WAFFLE After eating my own body weight in turkey and cooking a plethora of dishes with turkey as its main ingredient, the need for something a little more forgiving on the auld belt (Christmas present) and waistline is needed. And so to carrot, pumpkin and cannellini bean soup... with a good spattering of coriander and a few scoops of quark cheese... you would be mad to resist! METHOD Put the onion into a large pan with the squash, carrots, stock and ground coriander. Bring to the boil over a high heat, turn the heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes or until the vegetables are very soft.

WOMADS
Worthing Mums & Dads WORTHING MUMS AND DADS is a Facebook page
for local parents or carers to find information about what’s on offer for their children in Worthing. They share details of upcoming events, activities or groups that members feel other local families would benefit from. We’ve come together with WOMADS for them to share some things to do and stuff that matters in and around Worthing.
Donations THE MEMBERS OF WORTHING MUMS AND DADS
are a generous and thoughtful bunch. All year round, you’ll see posts asking where to donate toys, clothes, books and more to help someone in need. But when winter bites, they come thick and fast. Whether our members have come through hard times themselves or simply want to share their own happiness at a difficult time of year for those without, their questions and suggestions have helped us come up with this list of where to give in the run up to or the clear out after Christmas. 1. DONATE PRESENTS TO THE SALVATION ARMY on Crescent Road for distribution salvationarmy.org. uk/worthing
20 UNDER 20 CHALLENGE WE CHALLENGED MEMBERS OF WOMADS to come up
with ideas of things to do with the family for under £20 within 20 miles of Worthing. This is a selection of what they said… 1. HIGHDOWN GARDENS. A wonderful, chalk-based garden to explore with the kids. Great for hide and seek! – FREE (donations appreciated) Energy left after the garden? Walk straight out onto the Downs and fly a kite on Highdown Hill. If not, head to the reasonablypriced café for a hot chocolate and a rock cake. Note: Open Mon-Fri only Oct to Mar; Mon-Sun Apr to Sep. Some exceptions, see highdowngardens.co.uk 2. DRIVE TO PETWORTH, approx. 20 miles from Worthing - parking FREE outside the big gates. Cycling, scooting, buggy to the lake, see the deer and run around Petworth gardens. Take a picnic! 3. WORTHING LIDO – 3-hour unlimited rides wristband is £6.50 per child. theworthinglido.co.uk/ rides 4. BUILD DENS AND PLAY HIDE AND SEEK AT SLEEPY HOLLOW, off the Washington roundabout on

IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN OF SCHOOL AGE (or even if
you don’t), you probably know that our schools are struggling and West Sussex schools, in particular, get less funding than schools in other regions. Save Our Schools (SOS) West Sussex was set up by a group of local parents to fight for a better deal for our kids. From marches, to conferences to school fairs, they’ve been raising awareness, and having fun doing it.

Save Our Schools – West Sussex
You might have spotted them at the Warwick Street Christmas Fair at the end of November, where children and parents were invited to join the Worthing Rocks trend (see FB worthingrocksuk) by decorating pebbles with messages of support for their schools. So, what can you do to get involved now?
3. THE EMPTY PLATE CAFE COLLECT ITEMS (clothes, shoes, toiletries, sanitary products and more) and donates with the food parcel they send to the night shelters every week. Drop items to Lovett Hub, Maybridge Square, Durrington, BN12 6HB on Tues 11am-6pm or Weds 8.30am-12pm. Contact via FB page theemptyplatecafe if you need items collected.
5. DONATE FOOD ITEMS TO FOOD BANKS AT SAINSBURY’S at Lyons Farm, Durrington Tesco, or Worthing Homes Community House - 25 Dominion Rd, BN14 8JZ. See adur-worthing.gov.uk/ community-wellbeing/foodbanks/

George’s Lane, Warren Hill car park, near Storrington. FREE 5. SATURDAY MORNING CINEMA (£2.50/£3 per person), followed by a trip to the 2p machines on the seafront. A packed lunch and snacks from home, means extra pennies on the machines! Kids love it for a treat.
3. School not involved? EMAIL saveourschoolswestsussex@gmail.com for tips on spreading the word 4. GET YOUR THINKING CAP ON. Can you suggest events that the SOS West Sussex team could attend? 5. KEEP TALKING ABOUT THE ISSUES – from requests for felt tips to the rising price of school trips, our schools are still struggling and everyone needs to know about it!

BUSINESS FEATURE
Finance Corner 2018 IS HERE AND WITH IT NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS. For some these will
be around getting fitter, and here at Emerald Finance we have come up with some tips to make sure you are financially fit and in the best shape you can be for 2018.

rear their ugly head. Make sure you aren’t paying more interest than you need to on your credit cards. If you can’t clear them make sure they are on a 0% or low rate deal so you don’t pay more interest than you need to. Try to pay more than the minimum each month to clear it quickly. Focus on clearing the most expensive debts first!
Mortgage – if you haven’t checked
this yet do it NOW! If you are on a lenders variable rate or haven’t checked your options for a while you may be surprised by the savings to be had. Alternatively look for peace of mind with stable payments on a fixed rate. There are some amazing low rates available so see if it’s worth you switching to a different deal to save £££’s each month.
Family – recently got married, got
some new additions to your family? Make sure they are protected should the worst happen. Write your WILL, talk to one of our estate planners to ensure that your assets go to those you want, and that you have appointed Guardians for your children should the worst happen. Don’t let the state decide!
Life Insurance – two key things are
often missed here – is there enough insurance in place to make sure your family could clear the mortgage, and most importantly will the payout be tax free? Many don’t realise the payout could be taxed if it’s not written into Trust with up to 40% of the payout going to the tax man! This can be simply resolved by putting the insurance into Trust so that the tax man doesn’t see a penny and it all goes to those you care about. Chat to your Financial Adviser.
Save – not all of us can afford to do so but if you can make sure its tax efficient and in an ISA. You can save £20,000 this tax year and you have until April to do it, don’t miss out.

DADIFESTO
It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day and I’m feeling... So, do something simple and be kind to yourself. Stop looking at how many calories there are in a glass of wine. Stop reading blooming articles about ‘How you can change your life in an hour a day’ and focus on a couple of important things that make you and the people around you happy.
YOU’VE HEARD THE NEWS, YOU’VE MADE THE DECISION and you say to
yourselves again and again ‘This year will be MY year’. You’re done with the booze, the takeaways, the bad habits, the latenight working and not catching up with friends because something has ‘come up’.
Do a couple of things that really aren’t that tricky but will ultimately make your world a better place.
This year you will find ‘inner peace’ and take up Yoga. You will take all the washing off the exercise bike in the bedroom and use it. You will go to bed earlier and not binge on Netflix until the early hours. You’ll be prepared and cook healthy, nutritious lunches for yourself the night before, so you don’t have to go to Gregg’s every lunchtime. You will have downloaded that ‘Couch to 5k’ running app and have your application for the Marathon ready to send off. You will print off positive affirmations from the internet and place them around the house, so you’ll never forget ‘YOU ARE SOMEBODY’… You’ll listen to endless podcasts and read articles about ‘New Year’s Resolutions’. You will mark a big black cross on the kitchen calendar for January the 1st. This will be your YEAR!
Don’t judge other people – So what if their child is throwing a massive paddy in the middle of the supermarket? Do the compassionate thing and smile a supportive smile at the mum or dad in need, and offer some kind words of reassurance.
‘THE ROAD TO RESOLUTION IS FRAUGHT WITH DANGER, PLAN WISELY’ Then, of course, by January the 3rd you’ll be done will all that. The depression of having to go back to work, only to be met with endless “So did you have a nice Christmas?” conversations by colleagues that you utterly hate and drunkenly thought weren’t that bad after you bonded over that 8th glass of wine at the ‘Works’ do, will have you poking out your eyes will rusty pencil sharpeners, rather than having to face them again. You’ll be met with tidying up all the mess that the kids have made over last three weeks of chocolate-induced mayhem. And then to top it all off,
you’ll be greeted by a whopping great credit card bill, which will completely push you over the edge. In no time at all, you’ll be tipping up the back of the sofa to try and find any leftover ‘Quality Street’, that might have found their way down there. And you’ll be in your PJs, with a Domino’s on your lap by 7.30pm as it is far too cold to go the gym. Don’t feel too bad. Most ‘New Year’s Resolutions’ only set you up to fail because you expect too much of yourself.
Send someone an actual Birthday card instead of a quick Facebook post. Remember that thing called the Post Box? They still exist for a reason. Anyway, enough of all the dogooding, I’m off to investigate how many chakras there are in a deep-pan Hawaiian with extra mushrooms. Until next time…

THOMAS H GREEN’S MUSICAL TIME MACHINE THE TIME MACHINE HAS A TENDENCY to veer
Worthing’s Radio Heritage 1985-2018
towards the counterculture (and it always will!). However, music touches lives in many more ways than punk, psychedelia, rave and all that good stuff, and often on a much wider scale. This applies to Worthing as much as anywhere, and a man who knows all about it is 61 year old Roy Stannard, much of whose career has been motivated by a belief in the power of local, community and hospital radio.
“My career grew out of a love of music,” Roy explains, “out of introducing music to people, talking to musicians, getting people involved. Music can be tremendously therapeutic for people in hospital, people living on their own, people travelling, people in difficult jobs working long anti-social hours. Radio is a companion and a mainstay.” Over the course of four decades, Roy’s biography is interwoven with radio stations that have become part of community life, dating back to his days as a student at the University of Sussex, where he had a show on Radio Falmer, the campus station, followed by a stint on an early ‘80s Brighton pirate station. As a young man with an interest in ‘independent music, acid jazz, elements of soul, nothing particularly mainstream’, he became a teacher at Tarring Boys School (now Worthing High) where he developed a coterie of like-minded souls interested in music.
…Showcase guests have ranged from the late politician Lord Denis Healey to local star musician, Mike Kerr of Royal Blood... Hearing that Chris Burns, then Chairman of the Worthing Hospital Radio Association, was looking to set up a new service, he and a group of people that included technically-minded friend David Cunningham volunteered. They launched on the 11th April 1986, initially working from ‘a broom cupboard off the A27 at Swandean Hospital’. The response was great and, due to Cunningham’s skill at microwave signal linking, they grew to an eight hospital network as Worthing Hospital Radio, then Coastway Hospital Radio, now Seaside Hospital Radio. But surely the demands of hospital radio conflicted with Roy’s own musical tastes?

Do you have any memories of music life in Worthing? We’re interested in stories and scenes from any era, from the ‘30s and ‘40s to the ‘90s and Noughties. Perhaps you have a photograph of yourself or a local band or occasion? We’d love to feature it and chat about it. Please email editorial@hereandnowmag.co.uk (Head up Thomas H Green’s Musical Time Machine). “On hospital radio you can’t be self-indulgent by playing only stuff you like,” he explains, “I quickly learned to research and understand all sorts of different types of music. We were playing Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, the staples our mature audience loved.” Along with David Cunningham, Roy branched out into commercial radio with month-long projects based around local festivals, starting with the 1993 Adur Festival. They took over premises in North Street, Brighton, an old newspaper distribution warehouse lent by The Argus, which they turned into a two floor hub for their operations. The presenter team gathered in Brighton was an incubator for radio talent, and reached its apogee with the 1996 Radio Festival FM project (for that year’s Brighton Festival). However, when Roy’s group bid for a more permanent licence, they missed out. Older but wiser, Roy returned to the advertising sector as ROY & DAVE, SPLASH FM a director for the next five years. However, there’s a happy footnote to Roy’s 1990s Brighton adventure. Roy’s group, New Wave ROY AT SEASIDE RADIO
Broadcasting, sublet the Brighton studios to Burgess Hill Radio, who also tried and failed to win the Brighton licence (the successful bid eventually came from an outfit called Surf, led by Daniel Nathan and Eugene Perera, which, in turn, became Juice FM). Roy and David Cunningham eventually headed up a bid to win a licence for Worthing and in 2002 the Radio Authority agreed there was a demand. Five bids went in but the one Roy was part of won and on 5th May 2003 Splash FM was launched from offices in the Guildbourne Centre in the middle of town. Then in 2008 the two groups who’d originally bid for the Brighton licence joined forces, when Media Sound Holdings led by Allan Moulds (who had won the Mid-Sussex licence as Bright FM in 2001) merged with Splash FM. Later this marriage grew to include the Sovereign and Arrow stations in East Sussex and Isle of Wight Radio. The Group’s Sussex-based radio activities are now known by the handle More Radio. “I was MD of Splash
FM from 2003 to 2006,” Roy remembers fondly, “which led me to meet a number of musicians, including Keith Emerson of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, who was a good friend and a great supporter, and Leo Sayer, who was from Shoreham originally. In fact, we hired Leo Sayer to play Steyne Gardens in 2004. It was sponsored to enable free entry and still has the record for Worthing’s largest ever outdoor concert audience. We
ROY STANNARD WITH LEO SAYER
stopped counting at 12,000. The annual More Radio Garden Party every July grew out of that.” Skip to the present and the Guildbourne Centre office, including its Operations Director, Roy’s old pal David Cunningham, still plays a key role. Roy is back with More Radio too, after 11 years away, and is looking forward to the launch of their DAB digital service across Sussex in February next year. Meanwhile his programme The Whole Nine Yards has gone to air every Thursday for the past five years on Seahaven FM 106.3 (seahavenfm.com) between 7.00 and 9.00 PM. The show invites a notable guest to choose 20 tracks and talk about their lives. Showcase guests have ranged from the late politician Lord Denis Healey to local star musician, Mike Kerr of Royal Blood. Roy, however, is shy of taking too much credit for his work over the years
“No, it’s not about me,” he states, “It’s always been a collective effort, especially with the charitable projects I’ve been involved in. The hospital radio teams rely on trust and goodwill, whilst true local radio has to have deep roots in community. In the early days we’d even walk around the shops and venues and help people retune their radios to a local station...” He continues to enthuse about current and future projects but, for the Time Machine’s purposes, we’ll leave it there. Roy’s life casts a spotlight on the story of Worthing’s seedbed local radio scene and, as he suggests, if you want to get involved, just volunteer and email a CV to your local hospital or community radio group. You don’t need to be experienced, just have a desire to get involved. Pretty much as he always has.

MUSIC REVIEW PHOTO: JENNY WEAR
Back to Life: Soul II Soul Soul II Soul, Assembly Hall, Tuesday 5 December AS JAZZIE B HIMSELF SAID, it’s good to see the Soul
Music-loving adults of Worthing out on a school night, and out they indeed came in droves to see and hear the first ever visit of Brit Soul legends Soul II Soul, featuring original vocalist Caron Wheeler on their two biggest worldwide hits ‘Back To Life’ and ‘Keep On Moving’. The sumptuous tour bus parked outside the Assembly Hall brought a full band, with two slinkily-moving violin players and three backing singers, along with two keyboards, bass, drums, guitar, while Jazzie as expected either DJd from the back of the stage, or moseyed affably down to the front of stage to communicate the 1990s creed of “A happy face, a thumping bass for a loving race”.
bass heavy sound might have suited the Pavilion Theatre better, had the Pantomime Snow White not already been in residence there. As it was, the clarity of the instruments wasn’t helped by the Assembly Room’s more orchestrally-suited acoustic. However, this was a standing gig, and only those in the balcony were stuck with their allocated seats, so down at the front, where we spent most of the gig, the parade of Club Classics worked beautifully. I still have my vinyl copies of the first albums, both Soul II Soul and Caron Wheeler’s solo album UK Blak, from which she also sang her main hit ‘Living In The Light’, all bought from Our Price in the late 80s, and most of the Worthing audience clearly date from that vintage too. It’s
a demographic which still wants to go out, and shake its thing. After Selecter and The Beat the previous month, 80s Soul and Reggae bands are spoiling us.

Caron Wheeler sounded immaculate, as indeed did fellow vocalist Charlotte and the backing singers. Before now, the only contact Worthing has had with Soul II Soul was the sad death in 2002 on the A27 at Shoreham of fellow vocalist Do’reen. Caron filled in for Club Classic’s third vocalist Rose Windross during ‘Fair Play’. The 1100 capacity Assembly Hall quickly filled up once Soul II Soul hit the stage, although the

CINEMA & THEATRE LISTINGS
Boo! Hiss! The Evil Queen is in Town NOTHING HERALDS IN THE BEGINNING of
Christmas like a Panto! Worthing Theatre’s Snow White did not disappoint one bite. With a stellar cast including the ‘One and Only’ Chesney Hawkes as Prince Benedict who did indeed perform ‘that’ song, Joseph Elliott as Muddles who was a perfect fall guy to Richard David Caine who played the evil and incredibly funny ‘Orrible Herman’. The chemistry on stage was quite tangible as the ad-libbing, with the
genuine intention to make each other laugh, proved. Belly laughs abound, my 9 year old daughter was captivated and even my teenager let out a few laughs and joined in. According to her the panto was “cool”. When I asked my 9 year old to tell me about the best bit she said “I laughed and laughed at the custard pies and they (on stage) kept laughing and then falling over! I liked the people who worked there too, they were nice. The lady who gave us drinks was smiley too”. A great show in a lovely venue with a nice lady who works in the bar! What more do you need from a night
out at the panto?! It’s official in our family, panto just got cool again. As my 9 year old keeps on quoting back to me, the immortal words of Dame Able Mable: “We’ll have to do it again then, won’t we?! Wooh!” Oh yes we will!

WHAT DOES 2018 HOLD IN STORE FOR YOU? ARE YOU AN AVID BELIEVER in New Year’s resolutions and fresh beginnings, or is the changing of the seasons just an opportunity to ping up a new calendar on the wall? Personally I get excited for both of these things, last year I became vegetarian and I’ve stuck to it ever since. As for a new calendar, I usually wait until the January discounts kick in! While we’re on the topic of calendars, at our glorious theatres we have so many exciting events to pencil in; here are my 2018 highlights. We open the year with the lovable comedian Patrick Monahan, he was the villain and star in our recent pantomime Peter Pan as Captain Hook, every show he would come up with hilarious material on the spot, and I’m so excited to see his full gig in the Connaught Studio on 27 January. February holds a rare treat in store as for the first time ever; we welcome Company Wayne McGregor for his stunning dance show Atomos. This is an opportunity to see his choreography and direction live on stage. A
section of the show has the audience wearing 3D glasses as the performance literally jumps off the Connaught Theatre stage, don’t miss this on 6 February. On 2 March at the Connaught Theatre we welcome husband and wife Peter Snow and Ann MacMillan, they’ll be unearthing fascinating hidden war stories from men and women who’ve made their mark on history. My big family highlight of the year has to be David Walliams’ Gangsta Granny at the Pavilion Theatre on 20-22 April! I know my Nan can be a bit nutty at times so I can really relate to this story. To have such a big West End production on the shores of Worthing is fantastic, and this silly and endlessly fun show will bring smiles to the whole family. With these treats in store, I’d better decide which calendar I’ll be getting soon!

Joe Bunn’s Bardic Trials: How to Win at Christmas THERE’S TWO THINGS THAT WILL STRIKE DREAD into the heart of any office employee. The first is having to sign a card, whether it be birthday or leaving, for someone you’ve never met (my tip is to write in the card as if you had a secret liason with them, and then sign it from someone else). The second is the Secret Santa. You’re forced to pick a name from a head cover object, and you have to waste £5 of your valuable money on some tosh for what is essentially a complete stranger. It’s a nightmare. Until now, because I have the tools to teach you how to WIN at Secret Santa. First thing you need to do is to take advantage of the convoluted premise. It’s anonymous, and there’s a price limit. You know who they are, and they don’t know who you are, so you’re a kind of sanctioned stalker. The answer to this private Father Christmas conundrum is simple. Just get the creepiest collection of items you can. For instance, last year, I bought a large blue rubber horse and a framed note for my Secret Santa. The note simply read ‘I count your teeth at night’. It was signed from the Cockle Man. I wrapped all this up in way too much tape and paper, like an absolute maniac had done it. When the recipient received their gift, the reaction was priceless. They went straight to the HR department and made a formal complaint. I was still laughing when they were trying to find out who had given the gift. I told them that the rules of the game state that I can’t reveal who I had for secret santa, or as I was then calling it, Secret Satan, and I called them spoilsports. They never found out who gave that guy a lock of his own hair and a pack of hotdogs the previous year either. Now, you might say that there are no winners in Secret Santa. You’d be wrong, because we no longer play Secret Santa at my office, so technically, we’re all winners. So there it is, you now have 11 months to plan how to win at Secret Santa. Have fun! THE WORTHING BYPASS
This column will not change your life JANUARY. THE BEGINNING OF A NEW YEAR. A
whole new dawn. It is a time to reflect upon the successes of the past year and wonder at the opportunities ahead. That’s enough of all that. Who’s dead? That’s what I want to know. 2016 was a shocker by all accounts. Just about everybody famous and righteous sadly died: David Bowie, George Michael, Alan Rickman, Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds... What a shocker. Although nobody mentions Fidel Castro. Even tyrants have mothers. Mind you, she’ll be dead as well. Mercifully, 2017 held less wailing and gnashing of teeth. Celebrity deaths fall into three categories for me. For those recently slain whom I either don’t know or care little about, they get the Partridge Shrug (courtesy of Steve Coogan’s brilliant self-obsessed caricature Alan Partridge). This is the broadest category as the world is full of people I don’t know. If I did know them, I’m sure I’d care a whole lot about them, honestly. As I don’t I can’t, so stop berating me for being so heartless. Goodness knows, I’ve only so much love to give.
…The Beloved Hackette encouraged me to go public. I resisted. “It’s not as if you’ll be mobbed in Asda,” she shot back...
grand total of two nanoseconds. Oh, and how’s the dry January going? Not so good with that sneaky glass of sherry you had at lunch is it? Not so condescending now are you? No). What does the “oh” actually mean? Is it surprise? Is it, “oh well, they had a good innings… a lot longer than I’d given them credit for. They should be grateful.”? Or is it, “what a shame, although I thought they were dead already, I’m now doubly crushed at hearing it for a second time,” even though technically-speaking you never heard it the first time, you just thought you did? I fear, dear Hackolyte, that we subconsciously lean towards the former. They were lucky to get the extra few years of living whilst we had presumed them dead.
Moving on from your unnecessarily heavyhanded judgement, there’s the “oh no! So-andso’s died” group, usually relayed to a same-aged friend or partner who is guaranteed to join in the chorus: “oh no! She/he was such a great… [insert comedian, actor, Queen or equivalent here].
Rodney Bewes, great actor that he was, will always be frozen in time as Bob Ferris to me, droll stooge to James Bolam’s Terry Collier in the classic northern sitcom Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads? Now we know, they died. Well, Rodney/Bob did, sadly passing away last year. Happily James Bolam’s still going, bless him. For those of you who thought that James/Terry had passed away, you’ll likely be given something of a boost, more so as I’m not reporting that he has just passed away. That’s much better, reporting on long lives well lived.
The final category’s my favourite. We’ve all been here. It’s the “Oh, I thought they were dead already” classification. This is worth investigating further (in a non-judgemental vein please folks, I don’t pull you apart for sticking to your new year’s resolution to lose four stones in two weeks for a
I could be onto something, listing all those wonderful actors, musical maestros and sporty types who are still with us. Des Lynam. He’s still going. Kate Adie. Still going. Desmond Tutu. Great man. Dame Judi Dench. Lovely lady. Billy Connelly. Genius. I’ll be devastated when dear Billy departs.

A lasting comedic legacy for sure, but he’s also one of the few impersonations I can do. I was gutted when Roger Moore died. Yes, I’m afraid he is. Not many can do Roger but he became something of a speciality, what with everybody and his dog able to pull off a far too Scotteeshh Sean Connery. Which brings the spotlight back onto one’s own mortality. What will your legacy be? How will you ever live down your various missed opportunities, misdemeanours and abject failures? Sorry, I’m just getting my own back for your haughty approbation at my inhumane insouciance. As an anonymous figure of minor notoriety I will indeed go gently into that good night, to be replaced by an advert for garden sheds no doubt. The Beloved Hackette encouraged me to go public. I resisted. “It’s not as if you’ll be mobbed in Asda,” she shot back, her withering disdain destroying what was left of my precariously anonymous sense of self. By the way, other retailers are available but like most folk of a certain vintage I have my preference and Asda’s it. I don’t know why, it just works for me. Nor am I beneath sponsorship and I wouldn’t turn down a freebie, maybe a Breville Toaster. Do they still do them? So goodbye to 2017 and a slew of celebrity deaths and hello 2018 and many more to come. Never mind the likely lads, what I want to know is whatever happened to the Worthing Bypass?
