FASCINATING ADUR
Marlipins Museum
What does a pin of wine, a chequered wall and the Black Death have to do with the Marlipins Museum in Shoreham? READ MY THREE FASCINATING FACTS to find out…
1
It is something of a local mystery as to HOW THE MARLIPINS MUSEUM GOT ITS NAME. One suggestion is that it could have once been a storage place for wine and other goods, a pin being another term for a small barrel of wine. Another suggestion comes from the root word of the earliest deed, in which the building was known as Malduppine. The root word, Mal could mean that the building once housed something bad or unpleasant.
2
The Marlipins Museum is open from May to October, Tuesday to Saturday, 10.30am to 4.30pm. It costs £3.25 PER ADULT and £1.60 PER CHILD.
Surviving deeds of THE BUILDING CAN BE DATED BACK TO 1347, the year the Black Death arrived. The history of the building goes back further still, with some parts of the Marlipins Museum thought to be dated back to the Norman era.
3
The Marlipins Museum stands boldly on the High Street, with its STRIKING CHEQUERED WALL allegedly dating back to the 13th Century. The High Street was also known as ‘Procession Strete’, hinting that the
museum saw many charming customs and parades that are now long forgotten. Skip forward to the present day, and the museum now tells of Shoreham’s maritime history and, impressively, of the town’s medieval and prehistoric past. Marlipins Museum, therefore, serves as a fantastic educational resource, even teaming up with CoastEd, a partnership of organisations including Worthing Museum and Art Gallery, Littlehampton Museum, Rustington Museum and Worthing Theatres. The goal is to help to provide an exciting, innovative education service for schools in Arun and Adur & Worthing. n

Warming yourself on pebbles or being tucked away from the salty sea air are, sometimes, the only ways to munch on fish and chips. There is something nostalgic about those little wooden forks sinking into a chunky chip and flaking apart crispy battered fish (just remember to throw your forks and greasy ‘fish and chip’ paper in the bin). LITERARY LOCAL
School’s almost out for Summer
It’s finally here; the good weather, the pub gardens and all the fabulous events and activities that are going on locally.
your local library this summer! This year’s Challenge is Mischief Makers; celebrating the 80th anniversary of the much-loved comic, The Beano.
THE FUNFAIR RIDES, the car shows, music in Steyne Gardens and of course, ice cream! That all sounds amazing, but before we all go signing our school shirts (if that’s still a thing), have a look at what’s on offer literarily:
Children taking part will follow clues to explore their colourful collector’s map of Beanotown. As children read library books, they will collect special stickers to help them find the mysterious buried treasure!
Tue 3 – Sun 15 July
Mischief Makers kicks off in your local library from Saturday 14 July. It’s FREE and you only need a library card to register.
If you prefer your literature performed with a flash of flair and drama, how about some Shakespeare? Performed in the stunning Highdown Gardens, you have the option of the Taming of shrew (Tue 3rd - Sun 8th) or Two gentlemen of Verona (Tue 10th - Sun 15th). Both productions promise to be entertaining, and in the words of the Highdown Gardens website: “Be amazed, be captured, be moved ...” I know I’ve got my ticket! Tue 10 July Ropetackle Arts Centre are hosting a talk with Matt Haig, author of books for both adults and children, and winner of several awards. ‘Notes on a Nervous Planet’ looks at our relationship to stress and anxiety in the modern day, and ‘how to feel happy, human and whole in the 21st century’. £8 Thurs 12 July – 7.30pm
Have you found a book, left a book for others to read? Tell Emma your story at editorial@ hereandnowmag.co.uk
Courtesy of West Sussex Writers, novelists Juliet West and Claire Fuller present The Art of the Short Story. This talk and workshop covers the ‘the essential ingredients of a short story’ and how to master this challenging art-form! Goring Methodist Church, £5 for non-members Sat 14 July, ongoing There will be pranks galore and a ton of fun at
Volunteer! Anyone from 14 years can help your local library encourage children to read during the holidays. Visit your local library or westsussex.gov.uk/src to find out more.
SUMMER HOLIDAY READING But of course, sometimes summer + fun = less money. All those ice creams, the cold drinks and the fish and chips by the sea takes its toll on the purse-strings. So, why not consider resorting to an old favourite? The trusty book can be taken anywhere. It can be fitted into the funkiest of beach bags, just find a park/beach, take a snack or picnic, and settle down. Books don’t have to cost the earth either. Check out the charity shops for cheap, pre-owned books, Guild Care runs a popular bookshop bazaar in the Strand and Oxfam has a shop full of books on Montague Street or why not visit one of our fabulous local libraries? They’re FREE! Rumour also has it that the Book Fairies are often out and about, hiding free books around the local area. If you see a book with a green and white sticker, often decked in a lovely green/white ribbon, then it’s yours if you want it! So, in celebration of summer I’m grabbing my ‘Learn Norwegian for Beginners’ book and heading outside for a cold drink and some welloverdue sunshine! n

FINANCE CORNER
What is the best Mortgage? A lot of people are asking the advisers at Emerald Finance whether they should take a fixed rate at the moment and it’s a good question.
B U S I N E S S F E AT U R E
HISTORICALLY, TRACKER RATES have been cheapest but now there is very little to choose between a fixed rate or a tracker, at least in terms of what your payment will be today. Furthermore, many have drifted onto their lender’s variable rate and as the payment has remained affordable, may have done nothing, when most could have paid less or secured a more affordable payment into the future. So what’s the difference? A fixed rate sets your payments at a defined level for a set period of time, whereas a tracker rate is an interest rate that moves in line with the Bank of England Base Rate. A tracker rate can change although in recent years movements have been minimal. A variable rate is set by your lender which means that they decide when and how much it should change. Why change your deal? At the moment interest rates on offer are at some of the lowest levels we have seen. This offers an opportunity to take advantage of the best deals available. With over 120 lenders available at Emerald Finance, alongside specialist broker only lenders and exclusive deals, there are some fantastic schemes to be had.
The future presents potential uncertainty. With Brexit looming, some clients are concerned about the impact this may have. Naturally we don’t know how severe the effect of Brexit will be but if the cost of living does rise as certain indicators suggest, then it would be prudent to fix in as many costs as possible before this happens. Stability in a time of instability is key for financial management.
MATT SUTTON, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF EMERALD FINANCE, your local award winning financial advisers, is here to answer your financial questions. Got a query? Email on info@emeraldfinance.co.uk
In this sense a fixed rate is certainly attractive. Long term fixed rates of 5 years are incredibly competitive and, not only does it mean you can secure stable mortgage payments for the next 5 years, it also means you won’t have to remortgage again for that period. If rates rise, your payments will stay the same and if Brexit does have an impact it won’t affect your mortgage for 5 years. Everyone’s situation is different, so for a personalised review to see if it’s time for you to FIX YOUR MORTGAGE RATE, pop into one of our shops at 10 Chapel Road or 77 Rowlands Road in Worthing, or call 01903 222940 to arrange an appointment at your home or our office. One of our advisers will be pleased to help. n

MY COMMUNITY MATTERS
The Worthing Ambler
Favourite Pavements My inaugural amble starts at the roundabout between Waitrose and Lidl. No sooner have I begun stretching my legs do I meet two women stock-still staring down at the path. People dedicating their time to pavements: I have found my kin. “I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE IT GETS THERE,” says one pointing at the bank, “to safety”. On the surface below us is the object of interest: a chunky brown caterpillar, with bristling hairs, buckling and extending its body at some speed. “It’s the very hungry caterpillar!” she exclaims. Only it needs to turn around to masticate its way through the delectable grub at The Cornerhouse. If the creature starts out now, he might make it there for the celebrated Monday night quiz. I can’t claim the same speed of progress as the caterpillar. I’m a dawdler. My travels take place in the slow lane. For this amble I am traversing a small section from the first of the Worthing Heritage Trails. It takes me past the public house formally known as The White Swan and its neighbouring Forge Gallery, hosting a splendid array of brightly coloured fused glass. Off The Little High Street, in the alleyway heading north, are exhibitions of flora pushing through the cracks. Some pretty pink wild flowers are even managing to make the walls their home. Known the ‘Quashetts’, this footpath is old, at least medieval. PHOTO: ALI as NANCARROW
At one time it may even have stretched as far as Cissbury Ring. From this portion I emerge by the Sydney Walter Centre – once a school, now boasting a packed programme of classes and events. Taking tai chi here helped get my body back in balance. Perhaps pole dancing next? Out the front of the centre The Mind and Memory Garden created by Breathing Senses is a beautiful place to take a breather surrounded by big leafy plants. My favourite features are the hanging baskets made from repurposed kitchen colanders. Under the glaring eyes of the building’s lions I take a rest; I’ve earnt it! n Lela Tredwell
If you fancy ambling a little further, here’s a couple of Worthing Museum’s famous archaeological walks. Sat 7 July
Sat 28 July
Highdown Hill (easy difficulty) 11am1pm. Highdown Hill dominates the coastal plain, with views from the Isle of Wight to the Seven Sisters. People have been drawn to this eminence since the Stone Age, with archaeological finds from all eras discovered at the site. Perhaps the most famous are the remains of over 200 Anglo-Saxon settlers, who were buried with rich grave goods – some of which will be brought along for handling. This is a shorter walk with a moderate climb to the top of the hill. Meet in the car park adjacent to Highdown Towers. Car park is BN12 6PF
Clapham & Church Hill (moderate difficulty) 11am – 3pm. Clapham contains one of the last truly ancient woodlands in the area which hides a plethora of undisturbed archaeological remains. Explore the woods before heading along the ridgeline to Church Hill, the site of a 6500 year old flint-mining complex. Meet at 11am in Clapham Church car park. Car park postcode is BN13 3XP

Over 40 Years of Charity Shopping It is over 40 years since Guild Care opened its first charity retail shop back in 1976.
B U S I N E S S F E AT U R E
THEY’VE COME A LONG WAY in that time and Guild Care now runs nine outlets across Worthing and the surrounding areas.

Guild Care charity shops offer a fantastic range of donated and new goods, the proceeds of which go towards the running of vital lifeline community services for local people aged from 5 to 105.
ELAINE BARRON
Each location offers the shopper a slightly different retail experience. From the popular bookshop bazaar that is the Strand to the more up-market furniture and bric-a-brac available in the Rustington, or ladies wear in its Findon store. Warwick Street is now the go to destination for more retro and vintage goods whilst Rowlands Road has a variety of white goods (PAT tested) for sale and a large selection of £1 bargains to browse through.

Looking for low cost second-hand furniture? The Greenhouse superstore is the most amazing place to visit. It is also a great place to drop off donations for the other shops. Interested in volunteering? The chances are you are exactly what we need. Running nine shops would not be possible without the army of wonderful volunteers who, working alongside Guild Care staff, give up their valuable time for free. After moving to Worthing, Elaine Barron joined the Goring Road Shop as a volunteer: “I love being part of a happy team and talking to customers... Through the shop I met another volunteer called Jenny and we have become quite good pals.” Volunteer Co-ordinator Claire Hutchinson said, “Even a couple of hours a week will make a difference. Our lovely charity shop volunteers range from school students, (you can volunteer from age 14) who use this as a great opportunity to enhance their CV to a lady in her 90s who fancied a new challenge. You can even work hours around the school run. If you are reading this, whoever you are, then the chances are you are exactly what we need.” If you would like to find out more, please contact Volunteer Co-ordinator Claire Hutchinson on 01903 600602 or email: claire.hutchinson@guildcare.org n

Cast your mind back to those carefree days before your small people came along with their Mr Tumble-coloured world, the only time you would have seen trousers that bad would have been on a crusty white fella with dreadlocks and a trust fund.
2) Turn on every radio, TV, tablet and laptop you own at full blast, tune them in different music stations and position them in every room, creating the impression of a range of alternative stages to visit.
I’VE DECIDED TO COME UP WITH A FEW CONCRETE IDEAS ON HOW TO HAVE THE AUTHENTIC FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE WITH YOUR KIDS, WITHOUT LEAVING YOUR HOME.
3) Leave all the taps and garden hoses running so you get that authentic muddy-as-hell welly boot look. 4) Take out all the bulbs, put up the fairy lights you have left over from Christmas and tie the on/off switch to next doors cat while letting a two-year-old ‘care’ for her 5) Wear down your mobile battery and spend at least 3 hours shouting at spaced out strangers ‘Do you have a charger I can borrow?’ 6) Tell your kids bedtimes are nonsense and keep them up to the early hours while labouring under the delusion that they will want to sleep in, in the morning.
Now of course, if you are brave/stupid enough to go to a festival with your kids, it can result in one of two things. A ) An incredible spiritual reawakening away from the humdrum world of school-runs, where you get to see great bands of old and new, dance in the sunshine, hug strangers and chat codswallop with teepee neighbours. B ) A nightmare of Freddy Krueger/70s BBC kids TV presenter hosting a sleepover, proportions.
by Dan Flanagan HEAD BOY @ DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE | TOTROCKINBEATS
7) Nip down to the allotment, grab the compost heap and then spend 30 minutes blocking the loo. Bonus tip, smear the remainder around the shower. 8) Charge each of your family at least £8 for undercooked Lidl sausages, served in a stale bun. 9) Plot up in an ideal space, i.e. near your retro vintage cocktail bar cabinet, not too far from the loo and stick a flag in a nearby plant pot so if you get drunk, you can always find your way back in the dark later. #protip
So, I’ve decided to come up with a few concrete ideas on how to have the authentic festival experience with your kids, without leaving your home.
10) Find the most annoying kids you know, get them jacked up on endless amounts of Haribo and invite them round around to scream ‘Aciiiddd’ at the top of their whiny voices, while strategically jumping all over your tent
11 Lovely Homemade Festival Frollicking Ideas:
11) Finished? Pile everything/everybody in to an overstuffed/ hot sweaty car and spend 10 hours going nowhere really slowly and pretending to be a traffic jam.
1) Dig out the tent from the garage, (the one which you forgot to pack up properly the last time you used it ) and spend at least 3 hours arguing with your better half over whose responsibility it was to pack the pegs.
So who needs Glastonbury, eh? Until next time groovers, remember to dream and don’t forget the sun-screen! n

SPORT
A Summer of Sport
If you are a sports enthusiast like me, then you’ll understand that it’s that special time of year when you know a huge summer of sport is within touching distance. THE FIFA WORLD CUP, WIMBLEDON, International Test and One Day Cricket, Australia visiting Sussex for an international cricket friendly, The Open and US Open Golf, and of course, this all culminates with what is always an epic few days regardless of the result – the 2018 Ryder Cup in France. However, it’s important to note how each of these international tournaments can be linked to our own local sporting success stories. Just recently I had the pleasure of attending the Worthing 10k run along our promenade. This event seems to improve every year both from an organisational and logistical point of view but also in terms of competitiveness too. Just shy of 2,500 runners took to our streets in incredibly hot and humid conditions and events like this continue to bring out the best in people. Spectators line the streets offering support, cheering the names of strangers running past, and providing their well-deserved congratulations at the end. What’s more, this year saw a truly astonishing time of 30min 32sec as James Westlake broke the course record for the men’s race with 53-year old Elspeith Turner winning the female race in a time of 37:24. Truly inspirational, particularly for the hundreds of children in attendance. My personal satisfaction was topped off at the end when one of my twin sons said “Daddy, I’d like to be a runner when I’m older”. And that there, is what it’s all about – inspiring the next generation. As locals, we shouldn’t take events like the Worthing 10k and the Worthing Half-Marathon for granted. We are very lucky to have these
on our doorstep. It provides us with another platform to showcase and celebrate our wonderful local sporting talent, for which there is plenty. However, as the dust settles on events near-by, attention, particularly for football enthusiasts, will now turn to Russia and the FIFA World Cup. Whether you are a football fan or not, it’s hard to escape the coverage of our men’s national team as they look to install some pride back into the team, which has failed at recent major tournaments. In fact, we haven’t reached a semi-final at a major tournament since 1996 and not at a World Cup since 1990. This lack of success is in stark contrast, however, when compared to the Worthing College Football Team. Following an intense training camp in Verona, Italy, the Worthing College Men’s Football Team 1st XI returned to win the County Cup whilst the 2nd XI went top of the AoC SE League. In addition to this, Worthing College’s Women’s Rugby won the national cup and the Men’s Rugby won the East Berks 7’s tournament. I’d also like to end this column by saying a huge and well-deserved congratulations to the Brighton & Hove Albion Under 23 team, who this year gained promotion to Premier League 2 Division 1. Having played for the club from 16-18-years old myself, I can certainly relate to the joy, ecstasy and excitement those lads are feeling this summer. Well done guys! Here’s hoping you can emulate the senior team and work your way right up to the top of the footballing ladder and, like the first team have done this season, sustain your place amongst the elite. n

ACTION FOR HAPPINESS
No. 4 - Awareness
Based on the latest research, the national movement Action for Happiness has identified 10 Keys to Happier Living. The 4th is Awareness. STUDIES SHOW THAT REGULAR MINDFULNESS changes our brain structure for the better, helping us feel happier and less stressed. It is something we can all do, but because mindfulness is often associated with meditation, many people feel put off by the idea. Contrary to popular belief, living life more mindfully is not about ‘clearing the
Of course regular meditation works best, but there are many other, simpler ways to live more mindfully. For example, next time you walk down the street, notice all the greenery you pass on the way – flowers, trees, even weeds. Or when you’re eating, appreciate the taste, texture and smell of your food as you chew. Notice when your mind wanders off (which it will), and gently just keep bringing it back. Start with just 1-2 minutes and build up slowly. n

MAKE ME FAMOUS BABY #3
Room to Record
Last month we took a walk around the area just North of Worthing Central station and found three separate businesses set up to provide space to create for local bands and even nationally touring bands.
“OUR BACKGROUND IS IN COMMUNITY SOUND SYSTEMS, AND WE REALLY WANT TO BE A PART OF THIS COMMUNITY...”
IN 2018, WHERE PROPERTY PRICES CONTINUE to rise beyond the reach of either start-up businesses, families or bands, we can all see facilities springing up locally who can offer convenient, accessible spaces to make stuff. Some of these creative spaces suit artists or Digital small businesses, such as Colonnade House in Warwick Street, while other desks and offices for hire places like Freedom Works are where you can find Media and Marketing types drinking the free tea and coffee while they have meetings and plan sales pitches. But these new spaces can’t support the kind of creativity that involves electric guitars or PA systems without significant investment in sound proofing and equipment.
This month we drove out to what will be, until the Northbrook MET recording studio complex in West Durrington opens its doors to non-students, the nearest out of town music rehearsal facility West of Worthing. Crimson Craft Audio sits in the Rudford Industrial Estate in Ford, and we went to meet Joe, the head engineer, who broke out the fresh coffee and told us their story:
26
| July 2018 | HERE & NOW
“We started Crimson in Scarborough, then spent nine years in Amsterdam writing and producing music, then finally arrived here in Ford after over two and a half years trying to find a property. Crimson was originally meant to be a Community Interest Company because we want to help build up the local music community, but for the moment, we’re approaching that as a privately owned business.” Why Ford? “We saw that Littlehampton had very little rehearsal space, and we have a catchment from Worthing, which has a really busy music scene out to Bognor and Chichester. We also get UK touring bands come to prepare for their tours here.” Under the Crimson Audio sign, the fairly inconspicuous front and garage doors don’t prepare you for the high ceilinged space full of sound systems of all types and colours within: Joe says “Bands really appreciate that we have no stairs here! If only all gigs were the same.”
On past the sound systems, which they design, build and hire out as an important part of Crimson’s business, we find the crimson-walled studio room. “There’s just the one room where musicians record or rehearse, which means your gentle emotional Folk ballad is never competing with Thrash Metal next door! The room was designed as a recording studio and acoustically designed from scratch, sinewave tested at every frequency, and we keep making refinements. We built the vocal PA specifically for vocals and to avoid feedback” (that horrible high pitched whistle that plagues every amateur PA event).
TOP TIPS After years of working in music, Joe has plenty of tips for rehearsing bands:
“Look after your ears, don’t play at full volume. The best bands listen to each other not just themselves. Take breaks, get some of the free tea and coffee and get some fresh air every now and then, it’s more healthy and gives you a bit of musical perspective” “Record every rehearsal and listen back later. We can record each part separately, or just use a mobile phone!”
The room already has the drums and amps bands need to come in and just start playing. “We charge extra just for cymbals but all else is included” but Joe recommends bands rehearse with the gear they actually will be gigging with. “Then you know the sound you’re making in advance” What’s the ethos of your place? “For it to be fun, friendly and that sound quality is our passion” “Our background is in community sound systems, and we really want to be a part of this community, so we’re starting a free monthly session for up and coming local bands, where they can play here, and we’ll record and video them, put the video online and the band can take home the individual audio stems of their performances. Local bands interested in taking part should get in touch.” Watch out for upcoming Crimson Audio sessions online. Next month, we’ll look East of Worthing for band rehearsal opportunities. n
Mike Pailthorpe Mike Pailthorpe runs the Music Business Degree at Northbrook MET, and S’KoolFest, the yearly Festival for Sussex young new music talent: twitter@mikepailthorpe
“Someone in the band needs to be the MD (Musical Director) who keeps rehearsals focused and use time effectively” “Do some unplugged rehearsals to see if your songs and arrangements actually hang together without massive volume!”

THOMAS H GREEN - MUSICAL TIME MACHINE
Gig Memories
The Time Machine has previously travelled back to Worthing gigs of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, a golden era for the town’s music scene, kicked off by promoter Freddy Bannister and his wife Wendy. IN HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHY, “There Must Be a Better Way” he writes, “Worthing, despite its image as the geriatric epicentre of the south coast, was probably the liveliest of the venues we ran.” The gigs took place at the Assembly Halls and the Pier Pavilion and, in the ‘60s, featured everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Fleetwood Mac to the Walker Brothers. Later on, other promoters followed Bannister’s lead and kept the town’s reputation flying high. This month, then, the Time Machine celebrates your memories recalling the period.
girls were but they certainly were not the Supremes!”
“One of the best gigs I saw was Screaming Lord Sutch and the Savages. I thought it would be a laugh to see them but I was blown away by their brilliant rock’n’roll. The Savages came on stage first wearing leopard-skin loincloths and, after playing a few numbers, a coffin was wheeled out and Lord Sutch came out of it wearing a black suit and top hat. He took off the hat to reveal very long hair which he swung round in time with the music. It wasn’t until later that I learnt that the Savages included Keith Moon on drums, Jimmy Page on lead guitar and Paul Nicholas as backing singer. No wonder they were so good.”
Laura Schofield was a 16 year old schoolgirl when she decided to see a band called Genesis that she’d read about in the NME: “Arriving at the Assembly Hall slightly early, we noticed a very handsome guy heading towards us. He wanted to know if we had change for the phone box. He was stunning to look at with a bald patch at the front and a pixie-like nose. I fished around in my pockets and found sixpence for him. He thanked us and made his way into the nearby phonebox, grinning.
Geoff Baker remembers being one of the mods who walked out of Jimi Hendrix’s 1966 gig: “I did stay for a while but when Jimi knelt over his guitar, poured lighter fuel over it and set it on fire, I’d had enough and went for a drink over the road at the old Marine pub.” He adds, “The Supremes were billed to come to Worthing and I bought a ticket to see them. We waited for ages and then, eventually, three black girls trooped onto the stage and started to sing - or possibly mime - Supremes songs. I don’t know who these three

“SO YOU’RE THE ONE WHO BOUGHT THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD”
Do you have any memories of music life in Worthing? We’re interested in stories and scenes from any era, perhaps from the time of the concerts mentioned here? Or earlier, from dances in the ‘40s and ‘50s? Or how about ‘90s and Noughties gigs? We’d love to feature it and chat about it. Please email editorial@ hereandnowmag.co.uk
“Later on, my friend and I watched the support band [Northern Irish prog rockers] Fruupp, then Genesis took to the stage with ‘Watcher of the Skies’ from their new album, ‘Foxtrot’. I think this is the tour when it was first performed. Their imagery was still very much [the spooked Victoriana of] their ‘Musical Box’ period and Peter Gabriel told some strange stories between songs. We suddenly realised the guy we’d spoken to earlier was Peter Gabriel, only just becoming known and still able to walk around fairly unnoticed, apart from us girls who thought he was gorgeous.”
‘Oh, that’s all to do with Frank Sinatra,’ David laughed, “I sort of took inspiration from his song ‘My Way’. The tune was originally a French song and I wrote an English lyric for it, but it was rejected. A guy called Paul Anka in America wrote the ‘My Way’ lyrics instead. So I kinda rewrote the tune with my own words, and ‘Life on Mars’ is what came out.”
For David Colworth the 11th May 1972 was a pivotal day. It was when he saw David Bowie’s epochal gig launching Ziggy Stardust at the Assembly Rooms. The evening made such an impression he later published a short but evocative book, ‘I Played Ziggy’s Guitar’, recounting the evening and other Bowie-related events of his teens. In the adapted section below, he and his friend Ellie arrive early at the gig and a roadie shows them into the dressing room. Bowie, initially reticent, comes to life when Colworth asks about ‘Running Gun Blues’, an obscure song from the previous year’s ‘The Man Who Sold the World’ album… “So you’re the one who bought The Man Who Sold the World’, are you,” Bowie joked, “I’ve often wondered who it was!”
“Oh, and that song about Andy Warhol. Who is he exactly?’ Bowie grinned. “He’s an artist friend of mine who lives in New York. He does all sorts of crazy stuff, like painting Campbell’s soup tins.”
He picked up his guitar and began to strum. “It starts off with D, C and G, like this. See? And then it goes like this…” He ran through the rest of the song, showing the chord changes as he went. He seemed intrigued that we knew this album. “So what do you think of the LP then? Any other tracks you liked?” “My favourite track is ‘Life on Mars’. I was wondering on the cover, why does it say ‘Thanks to Frankie’ next to the title?”
“Oh, I see…”. But I couldn’t see at all – why would someone want to take a tin of soup and paint it? This was a very strange world indeed, but one I wanted to get to know better. By this time, David seemed quite intrigued by Ellie and me. It was almost as if he were touched by our genuine interest in his work. Two fifteen year old kids in Worthing, of all places, had turned up to ask all sorts of detailed questions about his songwriting. It’s easy to forget, but at that point in his career, he’d been trying to make it in the business for nearly ten years, and had seen one flop after another. In his mind, maybe he feared that Ziggy would be his last throw of the dice.” Colworth goes on to detail the concert and its aftermath. His book is available from Amazon. As for David Bowie, turns out he did have a few more tunes up his sleeve. n

THIS IS THE LAST MONTH of me doing the listings for you, it’s time to hand this role on to a new Music promotor, Oscar Simpson! Thank you very much to all of the listed venues, who have supplied me with a staggering number of gigs each month, I hope we’ve helped you too. Thank you to all of the people working at Here & Now, who have been lovely to work alongside and especially to Frances.
In my year doing the listings I have noticed positive changes to the scene in Worthing as more gigs pop up with new bands playing them. This has been an extraordinary year for the quantity of high quality bands coming out of Northbrook Met and other local schools, and hopefully Here & Now can help them on their journey to success! Worthing is developing a culture of bringing high quality acts into the area too as our venues secure bigger acts as well as the local ones. We are seeing more frequent ticketed gigs that are more frequently sold out, suggesting it is less of a risk for promoters to bring national acts into Worthing. I believe that Worthing has been a special place to be in over the last year, and anyone who has an active role in the scene will tell you the same! PHOTO: OSCAR, LEFT & CONNOR, RIGHT

MUSIC REVIEW
Sat 4 August
THE FIRST OF A NEW MONTHLY SERIES of Friday night “nearly unplugged” original music events went with a multigenerational theme: the Pavilion Cafe Bar (known to old Worthingites as the Denton Lounge) played host to Northbrook MET teenage sensations Chequered Red, who premiered some brand new songs, then Worthing resident Crayola Lectern, who launched their new vinyl album to rave reviews in The Wire, and finally Brighton band Fragile Creatures, who could barely believe the gorgeousness of the setting. Our photo shows the moonlight reflected off the sea, visible to band and audience. Stephen Wilcox from the band said: “We had a lovely time playing in Worthing on Friday - we were all blown away by how beautiful a setting the pier and the Pavilion Café Bar were.” Three more original music experiences of a “nearly unplugged nature” returns to WTG Unplugged on Friday 13th July at Pavilion Cafe Bar.

SPLASH IN THE PAD
I’ve seen complaints recently, in the form of photos of crying children on Social media, about the lack of a paddling pool in Worthing, about the fact the Splash Pad hasn’t been turned on yet, that the cafes near the Pavilion aren’t open. THAT THERE IS NOTHING for young children to do for free in this town anymore. Screw the Sea, they say with pcitures of scrunched faced, salty-cheeked kiddiwinks. I’m here to help, because I know of plenty of ‘very exciting things’ for your kids to get up to. 1) Go to the beach, and play ‘throw a rock at another rock’. This is a self explanatory game that will keep the kids entertained for up to 7 minutes. Get a rock, then throw that rock at another rock. Repeat this until it gets dark and you have completely lost your mind.

So next time you complain there’s nothing provided for young children to do in Worthing, think again. You just have to think outside the box, or in this case, the Pad. See you next time, Bard Brains, Cheers. n

3) Dig a hole. Now you might think you’d need a spade to make this happen, but no. You see all those rocks on the beach? Just find a flat one of those, and then dig into the earth. Make the hole as big as you can but remember to replace all the dirt you remove where you found it.

2) Stand near a tree. There is PLENTY of council provided trees that your children can stand near any time of the day or night. DO NOT climb these trees however, there is no insurance in place for broken bones or genuine childhood joy.
4) Join a gang. There’s nothing more trendy these days then joining up to the local group of ruffians and vagabonds. Simply draw a teardrop tattoo on your child’s face with eyeliner, then send them on their merry way. Application forms for gangs are usually available from the toughest looking guy in the group.

THE WORTHING BYPASS
This column will not change your life, even if you think it will Like many normal people the Ubiquitous Hack loves nothing more than to head off to the hills and bask in the scenic beauty which cradles Worthing. ...SOAK UP THE SUNLIT SCENERY AND CONTEMPLATE NOTHING OTHER THAN MY NAVEL AND THE WORTHING BYPASS.
YOU CAN SEE SHOREHAM TO THE EAST and Bognor to the west (turns out they found the biggest WWII bomb just off the coast, completely destroying last month’s column about the Luftwaffe preferring to dump their spare ammo on Worthing: go Bognor!)
Anyways up, reclining on the Downs gives time for reflection, to muse upon the iniquities of life and contemplate the great beyond. To be honest though, mostly it’s just about getting out of the house for a bit of peace and quiet. Nothing much goes on upstairs at all. You can barely hear a pin drop, thought-wise. It’s pretty vacuous: like a cathedral in the dead of night without any of the grandeur but quite a lot of the spookiness. Running up and down the hills – whether following the South Downs or Monarch Way – gives great succour but only in as much as sucking in the sights to stockpile a memory-bank of rich delights to help nurse through the rest of the dull day, or at least until Westworld comes on the telly box. It surprised me therefore to discover that when I do think, I’m not doing it right, or how psychologists think it should be done. I
discovered this at a leadership conference I attended in order to undermine current thinking on leadership, which is mostly rubbish, as anyone with a line manager will know. This wasn’t my intent initially – I had to be there to cover it as a hack, so there was no real ulterior motive, other than earning a crust and eating some crusty sandwiches at lunchtime. It was only during a coffee break when speaking to one of the speakers that I realised I was wrong, or at least not right, in the head (this may be something that loyal Hackolytes have long since realised but the latest shot of self-awareness always comes like a bolt out of the blue to me, a bit like the next words in this column). Any word up (no, I never figured on using that expression either), I asked the pleasant lady what she had spoken about (when I say I covered the conference, what I actually mean is grabbing the keynote address and hot footing it after lunch). Negative self-talk, says she. I love that, says I, naively. I love to keep informing myself that I’m a bit of an idiot and not half as good as I think I am. She was appalled. That’s what we’re trying to overcome – the voice in the back of your head that’s always putting you down, she informs, somewhat haughtily. It lowers your self-esteem, she scolds. I thought that was the Beloved Hackette, says I. It’s her calling. Not a flicker. Tumbleweed rolled by. It was like being at home. On reflection, it turns out the Ubiquitous Hack does not have any negative self-talk, so I inject my own for fear of turning into the thing I most deplore – Giles Brandreth (only kidding Giles, I mean Piers Morgan, obviously). I think I excelled at negative self-talk as a kid but worked out that it didn’t help in the slightest so at some stage rebooted the system to give myself a kick up the backside (a sort of sugar-coated-softie version of conscription). For better or worse it pretty much stuck. It was only through chatting to a contact later in the bar – a mercurial, somewhat notorious captain of industry, renowned for his ruthless, cutthroat ways, but more importantly, great company – that I got a shock. The likes of you and I need to pull ourselves down a peg or two, says I, lest we believe our own propaganda – we already have all the confidence in the world. Not me, says he. I’m totally insecure, I’ve never thought I’m good enough – that’s why I’m always striving for more – it’s why I’m a perfectionist. Oh, says I, I’d given up on perfection years ago. Turns out I’m not even like people who I like but don’t like who I thought I was like even though I didn’t like being alike. Which is something of a win if you can unravel all that. This got me thinking: if I’m not thinking right there’s not much point in thinking at all. So off I’ll pop to my hills, soak up the sunlit scenery and contemplate nothing other than my navel and the Worthing bypass. Job’s a good ‘un, if you don’t think too much about it. n
