WOMEN MAKE STUFF HAPPEN IN WORTHING

Happy International Women’s Day!
International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrated around the world on 8 March has been ‘a thing’ since about 1909 when the garment workers strike in America drew support from many quarters. Since then globally IWD has been a celebration of women’s talents, inspirations, spirit, bravery and achievements, across all fields of endeavour.

WE SPOKE TO SOME OF OUR WORTHING WOMEN who are out there moving the agenda forward in politics, community life, business and pleasure. Caroline Nicholls, a long-time supporter of business and community development has been appointed High Sheriff of West Sussex taking up this prestigious and key role for a year, starting at the end of March. This office is a 1000 year old position and plays the part of the sovereign’s representative for judiciary and law order matters in the county. In addition to her career in journalism and public relations, including 15 years working with the Board of Gatwick Airport, Caroline was Vice Chair of Sussex Community Foundation (SCF), a
key grant maker supporting the voluntary sector in communities across the county. During this time Caroline helped to develop and launch the Adur & Worthing Fund that SCF manages. Caroline’s appointment as High Sheriff makes her only the 5th woman in the role since West Sussex was split from east in 1974 and she says she feels very honoured to be offered this position. Initial contact may be made via paul. legrave@westsussex.gov.uk until Caroline is officially in position. So who puts up the shelves and assembles the flat-pack wardrobes in your house? Is the power drill a cause of argument as much as the TV remote? Well Girl Power started by Angela Lonsdale and Louise Barnard is doing all this and more. This home decor and DIY

We’d love to hear from you with your story, events, photos, highlighting women making stuff happen in and around Worthing. Email editorial@ hereandnowmag.co.uk with IWD in the subject header. Whatever girl power originally meant in the nineties, in Worthing it now means we are no longer dependent on a man with a plan. See more at facebook.com/ girlpowerworthing Had she lived a hundred years ago, Worthing Borough Councillor Hazel Thorpe would have been prevented from standing for public office on account of being a woman. Hazel was elected in 2017 to represent Tarring ward until 2020 but has actually been a councillor on and off for many years before this. Hazel’s advice for anyone thinking of starting out in politics include avoiding demanding too much of your colleagues and beware of expecting to change the world ‘as you see it’ immediately. Listening carefully and being confident of your own abilities is also high on Hazel’s list of recommendations for anyone thinking of standing for election. For a chat about what it’s like to be a women in politics contact hazel.thorpe@worthing.gov.uk or go to iknowpolitics.org
women, work with men but don’t let them take over, and don’t panic when vested interests bite back: “If you are not having arguments, you are not making a difference.” Becky Cooper was elected to Worthing Borough Council in 2017 having decided that she wanted to make a difference, and with a public health background (Becky is a doctor) that she had something to offer. One of the trickier matters Becky is aware of is how to prioritise the issues to focus on and that there are just not enough hours in the day. Becky.Cooper@worthing.gov.uk However, Councillor Cooper knows it’s not about having ‘the right answers’ to every issue. Her advice to women who may be put off from standing for office feeling that they are ‘not clever’ enough or that it’s ‘too difficult’ is that they may be the very people who can make the best leaders of tomorrow. If as she says, she can sort out her two young sons with all that demands (with acknowledgement of her husband who is most supportive of her work) then she can certainly do a lot else besides which demand the same skills. For inspiration, Becky ‘has looked to Michelle Obama and quoted her on the topic of ‘dirty’ or ‘below the belt’ politics: “When they go low we go high” it isn’t necessary to compete for the low ground’. Bringing a truly international flavour to IWD, Savi Jayaweera will be helping Worthing & Adur Minority Ethnic Empowerment (WAMEE) to
host a local IWD event on 8 March. This is being organised by WAMEE, the Women’s Hub, Hope Matters and other community groups celebrating cultural diversity and welcomes all women. Still in the planning stage as we went to press, Savi says details of venue and timings will shortly appear on facebook.com/waminorityethnic so keep an eye out here. If being uplifted through tuneful happiness is your thing then Amanda Mitchell and women at The Cellar Arts Club (Worthing’s best kept secret basement) have a new singing experience for you. Organised for women by women the Let’s Sing Soul choir demands no singing experience, is informal, supportive, friendly and fun and the next two workshops are at 7.30-9.00pm on 6th and 20th March. 70 Marine Parade, Worthing BN11 3QB. lets-sing-soul.com 07977 536258. ….and finally, did you know that Emily Davison, one of the most famous suffragettes, was a teacher in Worthing between 1896-1898? Named as an inspiration by Melody Bridges from Worthing World of Words, Emily died after being hit by the King’s horse at Epsom Derby in 1913 when she walked onto the track during the race in what many believe was a protest about women being denied the right to vote. She was a staunch campaigner for women’s rights and thought little of taking whatever action was necessary to bring this to the attention of those in power. Well guess what, it worked! Thanks Emily! n

MUMAFESTO
To the Totrockin’ Mummas The Hand That TotRocks The Cradle, Is The Hand That Rules Our World. ASSUMING YOU’VE NOT BEEN UNDER a big
chauvinist rock for the last few weeks, you’ll have seen and no doubt reflected on the date marking one hundred years since (some) women were awarded the right to vote. TOTROCKIN’ MUMMA NUMBER ONE
“The quest for women’s advance is always met with resistance and a backlash,” with a warning that “even 100 years later we can’t stop. The job is not yet done.” wrote Harriet Harman, the longestserving female MP in history.
With this in mind and the fact that this month marks the day where we celebrate those whose ‘hands rock that cradle and rule the world’, I felt it only right and proper that we turn this month’s ‘Dadifesto’ over
to all things mum-related. With my mum ‘fanboy’ hat on, I asked some of my trusted school-run buddies what they actually wanted as a pressie this year. You’d be surprised at what these charming women came up with. Flowers, home-made cards, and breakfast in bed don’t get a look-in. So, here’s to all the TotRockin’ mummas out there, big up ya’selves. Four Things Mums Actually Want This Mother’s Day! 1) A self-cleaning kids bedroom. One where Nerf bullets, the contents of school book bags and chewed up biscuits don’t clash like a punch-up in an episode of ‘Peaky Blinders’. 2) Calorie-free Gin and Chocolate on tap. #Protip if any of you budding inventors come-up with a way to produce either of these things, you’d be on easy street financially and may possibly also be awarded the Nobel prize for Peace. I asked one friend, who shall remain nameless, for reasons that shall soon become obvious, and she came up with the absolute beauty. 3) “I want one plane ride a year to a warm place where there is a quiet beach, a deckchair with my name on it and a selection of all the great books I haven’t got around to reading yet. I want 4 days to myself in said deckchair, not talking to
a single soul. I want to read, stare at the sea, eat very tasty by Dan Flanagan vegetarian food HEAD BOY @ DON’T (and not have BELIEVE THE HYPE | small people TOTROCKINBEATS moaning or a husband saying he will die if he doesn’t consume his own weight in animal carcass). This would be followed by the most delicious chocolate on the planet (that I will actually have the time to enjoy, as opposed to just shoving in my mouth to give my legs an extra 5 minutes on the go). Walk when I want to, run when I want to, sleep when I want to. I will then return on said plane and look forward to next year’s trip”. 4) A meal that everyone in the family enjoys equally. Without there being an EU excess of chicken nugget mountain left behind and another rehashing of the “some people aren’t lucky enough to have chicken nuggets” speech. So there you go, good luck trying to find any of these on the high-street... If I can indulge myself a tad and abuse my position, I’d like to say a special thank you to the lovely lady that hangs out at my house, puts up with me and our son, and our distinctly boyish sense of humour, and is quite possibly the most amazing mother a boy could have. Cheers Sal, we love ya. xxx n

Introducing the Greeters Scheme
Open Houses Rides Again!
NOW RECRUITING!
This year’s venues and artists are all in, and the leaflet design for the trail is underway. Visitors will be interested to see that there are 20 new venues this year, including 2 new schools, Bohunt School and Our Lady of Sion.
Do you enjoy meeting new people? Do you have a special area of interest? Are you passionate about Worthing? If the answer is Yes then read on… AS A PART OF A SERIES OF PROJECTS to enhance the experience of visitors to Worthing, a new initiative is set to launch in summer 2018. The Discover Worthing Greeters’ Scheme (part of International Global Greeter Network) will provide the opportunity for visitors to the town to be linked up with a local person who has a specific Worthing based interest or passion. Greeters Scheme was founded in 1992 and is thriving in New York, Melbourne, Paris and the Netherlands amongst other places – now it’s Worthing’s turn to join the Greeter Community. A ‘Greet’ is really just a friendly welcoming face but centred on a theme - it might involve a local history tour, an introduction to independent art in Worthing, a background into past famous residents or local Sussex produce, fishing, football... or anything else that tickles your fancy! By volunteering as a Greeter you will be supporting the local visitor economy and helping promote the welcoming nature of this town. To become a Greeter you need to: • want to share your love of Worthing with visitors
• be over 18 • be available at least once a
month (you can choose as and when you want to volunteer) • suggest a theme for the walk or encounter • you don’t need a degree in the history of art, just a friendly approachable manner • you don’t have to speak a foreign language.
WOMEN ARTISTS FIGURE PROMINENTLY, exhibiting a wide range of work including painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, jewellery, ceramics and textiles. There are women artists who are working professionally, as well as women artists fitting their practice in around work and family. A chance to celebrate the work of all our local artists, starting Saturday 16 June, for three weekends.

BRINGING BACK CHILDHOOD ADVENTURE
Playing Out Many of us remember playing out after school and in the holidays; going round to call for a friend and then joining others for ball games, skipping, or epic hide and seek. All ages were involved, with younger brothers and sister’s tagging along, and sometimes revealing unexpected speed or skill – or a stash of sherbert lemons.
Nationally, there is a growing movement of people who want to restore the chance to play outside to a new generation of children. The projects involve opening a street for play, inviting participation by all the residents, and re-directing through-traffic. This is organised to last for a couple of hours, usually with stewards to make sure everything goes smoothly, and the dates are published in advance. Locally, we have a keen campaigner who worked hard with councils to lay the foundations for successful Playing Out projects throughout the area: Kathryn Kay set up a pilot in 2013, and

You can find out more via these links: Adur and Worthing closed Facebook group for local support facebook.com/groups/adurworthingplayingout/ adurworthingplayingout.org.uk links to the application form or email sophie.whitehouse@adur-worthing.gov.uk meg@shakeitupcreative.com is happy to advise Nationally, check out playingout.net for advice and support, plus a good short video on the homepage.
ALL THAT FREEDOM DISAPPEARED with the rise of car use, and the danger of traffic reduced confidence in cycling or walking to school. With that have gone simple connections with the neighbourhood, and the chance for children to grow gradually more independent, getting to know their way around their environment with other children.
persuaded the council to reduce red tape, abolish the charge for street closure, and establish guidelines. The aim was to make it easy for people to apply. As Kathryn says, ‘I held various meetings with council officers and councillors and found amazing support for the project, well, why wouldn’t they - it’s about making connections between households on a street, young and old alike, about looking out for each other, being active, and above all, it’s fun!’
The initiative was a big success, with around 30 streets taking part, involving over 500 children and a lot of tea and cake. This summer, plans are underway again for Playing Out in Westcourt Road; Meg Fenn of Shake it Up Creative, describes the effect it has had; ‘We’ve been running Playing Out Westcourt Road in Worthing for four years now and it has become very popular with our immediate neighbours, other residents, and with families in nearby streets. We get people with and without children, who want to get to know their neighbours better, and families who are new to the area who want to meet people and make new friends. Parents of children with disabilities have met and formed support networks. Elderly neighbours who live on their own have expressed joy in seeing children playing outside and have taken the opportunity to spend time with people who live nearby. All of this helps to foster strong community ties and of course gives children the opportunity to play out in the street. We have chalk, games, skipping ropes, bubbles, and kids bring their scooters, bikes, footballs and sometimes we even have cupcakes or ice creams. It is a wonderful community tradition for Westcourt Road that we look forward to each season.’’ The planned dates are Sunday afternoons, 2-4pm, through April to the end of September. They do need stewards to enable the playstreet to work, and welcome volunteers. Playing Out Westcourt Road has a private Facebook Group people can simply request to join. Inspired by the idea? FYI ‘Playing Out’ is a councilbacked national scheme there is plenty of experience out there – there are even street kit boxes to borrow. Let us know if you set up Playing Out in your street, and we’ll give it a shout out! n

FASCINATING ADUR
Worthing Mums & Dads do Literary Local
by Ella Davies
What does a hummingbird carrying a crate of champagne and a flying flea have to do with Britain’s oldest licensed airfield, Shoreham Airport?
March! Spring! New shoots! Etc! No better time to feed your child’s burgeoning love of reading than the month of Young City Reads and World Book Day. CONVERSELY, IF THE RELENTLESS SCHOOL PRESSURE of constant levelling up has beaten your child into a totally-fed-up-with-thisreading-malarkey malaise, there’s no better time to cajole your child into appreciating the joys of reading than the month of Young City Reads and World Book Day. We asked the Worthing Mums and Dads Facebook page what was on their kids’ bookshelves and here’s what they said:
AG E S 0

READ THESE FIVE FASCINATING FACTS TO FIND OUT…
1. In 1910, former scholar of Lancing College, Harold Piffard, was spied
hopping along a piece of grazing land in his self-built model aeroplane by the landlord of the Sussex Pad Inn (Alfred Evans). The landlord had been watching these flying experiments with great interest and challenged Piffard by offering him a crate of champagne if he could fly the aeroplane, named Hummingbird, over to collect it. Piffard won the challenge.
2. During World War I, Shoreham Airport was used as a training base for
the Royal Flying Corps. One instructor would apparently shout instructions from the ground to his airborne students!
3. In 1935, Henri Mignit commenced his British demonstration tour at Shoreham. His plane, the Flying Flea was the first DIY light aircraft.
4. In anticipation of attack, during World War II both the hangars and
terminal building were camouflaged with green paint. Bitumen strips (a tarlike substance, used for making roads) were strewn over the field to give the appearance of hedgerows.
5. Due to the precise and bold art deco design of the Grade II listed
terminal, this building has been used by film makers over the years to depict scenes from the 1930s. The terminal was more recently used in The Da Vinci Code (2006), cleverly transforming into Le Bourget Airport, from which actors Tom Hanks and Audrey Tatou used to flee France. You may think the airport is just used for the pleasure of flying light aircraft, but it remains a vibrantly busy place. The growing number of members at the Shoreham Visitor Centre provide both memorabilia and literature relating to Shoreham, including guided tours for a small charge. Thanks to the dedication of the Airports volunteers and visitors, these captivating memories continue to live on. For proud Adur, discovering charm in its history is simply a short flight from the nest. n

BUSINESS FEATURE
Finance Corner Mad as a March hare is a phrase we don’t hear very often any more. But when it comes to mad decisions it’s not just limited to March! IT’S ALWAYS SURPRISING to the advisers here at Emerald Finance when we see someone who hasn’t had a financial review in a long time. Everyone works really hard for their money but once it’s earnt so many of us don’t take steps to ensure that money continues to work as hard for you as you did when you earnt it. Typical financial mistakes we see clients make are normally in regard to their mortgage, savings or pensions. MATT SUTTON, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF EMERALD FINANCE, your local award winning financial advisers, is here to answer your financial questions. Got a query? Email on info@emeraldfinance.co.uk
If you have come off a special deal on your mortgage and have moved on to the lenders’ variable rate this is normally an expensive rate and for most, there are alternative options with significant savings to be had. These savings are often simple to achieve and quick to process, ensuring your money is in your pocket and not your lender’s. For those with savings or investments, interest rates are at a low level so it’s key you make sure you are getting the
best deal that you can get. The impact an extra 1% can have over time is incredibly significant. Pensions are also an area that are often forgotten about, out of sight and out of mind. When you hit retirement however most retirees kick themselves for not paying attention to them. Often these are the largest form of savings that a person has and yet they are widely ignored. Many funds are not actively managed and there could be far better options available to you. Some pensions may also be set up so that this money dies with you, as opposed to being passed to your spouse or children on death. At Emerald Finance we ensure our clients’ finances work for them, not their lender, bank or pension fund provider. If you would like to make sure your money works for you, please take advantage of our free review, put your mind at rest and see if you can free up some cash. Emerald Finance have two offices locally, one at 77 Rowlands Road, Worthing and one in the town centre at 10 Chapel Road, Worthing. Our advisers can also meet you at your home or discuss your affairs on the phone. Call 01903 222940 or email info@emeraldfinance.co.uk for more details. n

INTERVIEW
50 Sides of Worthing MEET EUGENIE ARROWSMITH
Eugenie Arrowsmith is one of our favourite Cultural imports to Worthing, and a whirlwind of activity. EUGENIE WORKS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY under many guises, from signed artist, to PR, to label boss, to her latest role working with the female-led Featured Artists Coalition, which includes Annie Lennox, Sandie Shaw, Sia, Robbie Williams and more. Somehow, she’s also fitted in her MA from Brighton Uni, and BA from Northbrook MET, alongside founding the Worthing branch of the new ethical social network Campfire Convention.
We asked Eugenie, who loves living in Worthing, these crucial questions! How long have you lived in Worthing? I’ve been in Worthing since 2001 but used to spend time in Lancing and Brighton as a nipper. It’s easy to get to my work in London and Brighton from here. Why Worthing? I love the pier and seafront - Worthing has such charm. I love the beach too. When were you happiest? Every time I’m with people I love, so it’s a constant state
CAMPFIRE CONVENTION AND THE FEATURED ARTISTS COALITION
What has been your most embarrassing moment? Too many to mention but I did an MA in Performance Art so I have no embarrassment threshold! If you could bring something extinct back to life, what would you choose? The Dodo please, I love birds! Who would play you in the film of your life? Oh please, I can’t even comprehend that concept, I don’t take myself that seriously. Beware of ego trips or be wary. It’s better for your health. Which piece of music changed your life? Are Friends Electric? Gary Numan What did you want to be when you were growing up? A vet. It didn’t work out
Who would you invite to rave with you on Worthing beach?
Tom Middleton because I’d insist he DJ’d, all my family and new Label signing The Juke of York! What single thing would you do to improve Worthing? The initial impression when you walk out of the station (which I believe might be being sorted) and a bit more sand on the beach maybe. What would you donate to Worthing Museum? I’d ask my photographer Dad for some prints of the pictures he took of LS Lowry the artist. They would look so good there. What event did you last pay to go to in Worthing? The cinema. I love The Dome a LOT. n
Eugenie tells us “Campfire Convention is a social network that aims to do good and is in the process of becoming a community interest company. I KNOW PETE LAWRENCE from when I worked for him at The Big Chill Festival and was really inspired when I saw the outcomes for homeless people in Southampton when they opened a Campfire Beacon there and that inspired me to want to have a Beacon in Worthing too. I really enjoyed our first meeting in Worthing and found out amazing things about people I’ve known for ages. You can read more here: campfireconvention.uk/ content/about-campfire
Also, if you are a musician, join the Featured Artists Coalition (thefac. org). It’s a UK based not for profit organisation founded in 2009 to support, advise and educate the artist community within the music industry. It’s currently led by Lucie Caswell and the Board includes women artists - it’s great to be part of a female led organisation, to see strong women creating real change, particularly in the tough area of recording artists’ rights.” n

If you drive west on the A259 from Worthing, past Goring into Ferring, there’s an unobtrusive right turn that leads up a hill, Highdown Hill, with views over the whole area. There’s also a mansion house there, built in 1820. It looks horror filmic at first glance but is, in fact, a STERNS HAD A hotel and UNIQUE LAY-OUT, carvery. the dawn of the 1990s, it was one of the most iconic clubs in Britain: Sterns, a true rave mecca. ANDY BANNISTER, UNDER THE NAME QUANTUM, was a resident DJ and well recalls those glory days. “It became famous across all clubland at the time, everyone on the south coast knew about Sterns,” he laughs, over a cup of tea, “They came from Bournemouth, Portsmouth, everywhere, and we started getting people from London. In those days there was nothing to do round here so it was what everyone looked forward to, one big family, every other Friday night.” Andy moved to the area from Burton-on-Trent with his mother, a tax inspector, when he was two. Twenty years later, in 1989, he’d been through the school system, had a BTEC Diploma in Business Studies and was a trainee accountant. But he was bored. His main interest was collecting records –
DJ QUANTUM ON THE DECKS IN HVR RECORDS, BRIGHTON, MID-1990S
hip hop and disco, but mainly reggae, ragga and dancehall which he’d go all the way to Dub Vendor in Brixton to seek out. Across the rest of Britain, however, a socio-musical revolution was beginning to occur. House music and techno, initially from the States, and Balearic styles popularized in Ibiza, combined with widespread use of MDMA, AKA Ecstasy, kick-started an explosion in utopian, hedonistic partying. Andy’s friends started attending the

Sunrise raves, vast dance extravaganzas, usually bordering the M25. They would return after dawn evangelizing about acid house, bringing mix tapes. Andy would spend time in local record shops absorbing the new electronic club sounds. He was becoming a convert. One night a local promoter known as Skunk put on a rave night at the Karaoke Club (Rowlands Road, now flats). It was, says Andy, “an eye-opener”. Next Skunk put on a couple of nights called Purple Haze up at “the house on the hill”, Sterns, which took its name from Sir Frederick Stern, a horticulturalist and gardener who’d lived there from 1909 until 1967. These parties opened the door to what followed. At the time, local authorities across Britain were seriously concerned by the illegal rave phenomenon. Among much else it was affecting income from more traditional evening leisure industries. They wanted to bring dance music culture into more controlled environments and were willing to hand out coveted late licenses to do so. In the Worthing area a promoter known as Mensa had run successful events under the title In-Ter-Dance, a company he’d set up during 1990 with help from a Government Enterprise loan. He was offered the opportunity to put on monthly all-nighters at Sterns on a members’ club basis,
staying open until 2.00 and 3.00 AM the rest of the weekends. At the end of the year, he began to do so. Sterns had a unique lay-out, multiple rooms to chill out in, a development that would become customary across clubland, and three main arenas, the Top Floor, the Garage and the Underground, each playing different styles of dance music, also an innovation at the time. Andy got to know Mensa and his partner Rachel, who would run the door, through attending In-Ter-Dance at Sterns from the start. “Mensa would pop round our flat,” he recalls, “He’d come and chill out with me and my mate Dave Knapp, sometimes ask our advice about what outside DJs to get in. I’d started to get really into DJing, sometimes practicing mixes eight hours a day. I had one Technics 1200 [a quality turntable], one crappy one, and a rubbish Tandy mixer. One day Mensa was round and said, ‘One of my decks is bust, can I borrow yours?’ We said, ‘Yeah, you can, if you give us a DJ set?’.” “Dave and I did a couple of sets in the Gallery, the attic room where Mensa gave beginners a try,” says Andy, “Then he gave us residencies. Dave was resident in the Underground, under the name Cloud 9, while I warmed up on the Top Floor, where people came in. I never knew what to call myself but a friend of mine suggested ‘Quantum’ - a leap
in time – and it stuck. I played breakbeat material, alongside the likes of John ‘00’ Fleming, Pigbag, and Rock & Vibes.” By summer 1991, Sterns was really hitting its stride. Major DJs would make sure they played there, such as Carl Cox and Moby, while there were also PAs from live acts, including Shades of Rhythm (of the hits ‘Extacy’ [Sic] and ‘The Sound of Eden’) and Dutch house duo Fierce Ruling Diva. The Prodigy, on the cusp of fame, still during their “rave pyjamas” phase, even put in an appearance. “The floor below me was the Garage,” recalls Andy, “Where there would be the likes of Evil O, Rhythm Doctor, Aubrey and Femi B, then you’d go down to the Underground where it was absolutely bonkers, sweat raining off the walls, laser shows, dry ice, strobes, everything just went a bit crazy down there. The cliché is that it was drug-fuelled and all that. To some degree it was, but you didn’t have to drugs. For me it was about the music. Every other week I’d go up to London to get the latest promos from Lucky Spin in King’s Road, take the tube to Soho to Blackmarket Records where I started to get to know [then-famous DJs] Nicky [Blackmarket] and Ray Keith. They’d hold back promos for me and I’d take Sterns flyers up for Mensa. It was round this time that Sterns really started to become a national phenomenon….” For what happened next, check Part 2 in April’s Time Machine. n

Be sure to check out the Soundhouse Studios showcase at St Paul’s on 9 March. All of the local acts rehearsing at Soundhouse Studios in Worthing have got together to stage a special evening Original Music of local talent, and there can be no doubt of each act’s quality! First on the bill are My Pet Shark, a local act that blend Red Hot Chili Peppers-esque funk rock with a Rage Against The Machine style eye upon social injustice. Expect the grooviest slap bass lines, hard-edged vocals with a political slant and marine based craziness from these guys.

Next, a trip into more straight-ahead rock territory with Teal and Vektrill before the headline falls to funk/soul band Jacob Aaron and the Reign, fresh off of their BBC Music Introducing slot in Hastings. For £4, this show is an absolute steal. I advise you to get a ticket quick. n

A Chilling Ghost Story AT T H E C O N NAU G H T by Stephen Sheldrake - Marketing Officer, Worthing Theatres I love a good ghost story. The ones that make your hairs stand on edge and goose bumps appear on your skin are the best. I WAS FIRST EXPOSED TO THE WORLD OF THEATRE
at the end of year six on a school trip, where we were invited to see The Woman in Black. Now, 11-year-old Stephen wasn’t really sure what was in store, and I had what I can only describe was the most terrifyingly wonderful experience of my life. I still remember the tension and excitement inside the dimly lit theatre, with the smoke machine sending cascades of mist oozing around the dark set. When the cloaked women appeared down the isle of the auditorium and walked alongside me, it sent shivers down my spine. Now 14 years on, and when I learned that we would be welcoming Turn of the Screw to Worthing at the Connaught Theatre, I was of course naturally very excited. I learned that Henry James’ novella, originally published in 1898, was actually the original inspiration for Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black, as well as the iconic film The Others.
The producer, Dermot McLaughlin, travelled all the way down from Colchester to come and meet us and have a look at the theatre. He described in great depth to me the process of his adaptation of this iconic story, and how this version would be unique. As opposed to your traditional straight ghost story, his adaptation introduces elements of a psychological thriller. It questions the sanity of the Governess, who recounts the ghostly occurrences at Bly 30 years ago. Did the events really happen as she recalls them, or has her memory changed to cover for something else? His passion for the story was so clear and hearing him describe the creative process left me feeling inspired. But we all know that ghosts aren’t real… don’t we? I mean, there have been rumours of a Grey Lady that hangs around the Connaught late at night. n

I saw a new sign in Town this month. It’s an official sign, properly made, and is attached to a lamp post opposite Iceland, just outside the chip shop that isn’t called Macari’s.

THE SIGN PERTURBED ME A LITTLE. To distill this metal missive’s message to just a few words, it said ‘BEGGARS WILL BE FINED’. Now, I was in two minds about this sign. I, like most, get fed up of the seemingly endless stream of people asking me for ‘90p for the phone box’ or ‘76p for a weird chicken tikka roll with cabbage in it’, but I am also of the opinion that fining someone for asking you for money is nonsense.
www.precisionwindows.co.uk Email: sales@precisionwindows.co.uk
My next plan is to completely turn the idea of begging on its head. Why don’t I start sitting on the street, with a receptacle for obtaining monies next to me. But, right, instead of asking people for money, I’ll start handing out money. Every time someone walks past, I’ll just say ‘spare change?’ and rattle my money cup. But the twist is that I’m offering them the change. Consider those squares freaked out. Finally, let’s find one extremely rich beggar. Let’s fine that one beggar but with a whopping great fine of say £20,000. Then, and this is the clever part, we distribute that money to all the people begging in the whole of Worthing. Share it out evenly. Then they won’t need to ask for money any more. Problem solved. Or we could provide better care for the people who end up in that situation. Nah. Let’s do it the Bardic way, with stories, reverse begging, and bigger fines. n

QUOTES QUIZ ANSWERS
First off, we could start by only fining the beggars that have boring stories as to why they’re asking. See, I’m assuming buskers aren’t included in the big begging ban, so if the person asking for your hard earned shrapnel was to spin a yarn when doing so, you would be entertained. Thus the money you give them is for services rendered. So instead of ‘You got 87p for the train mate?’ we would be treated to ‘Excuse me sir, but I’ve just woken up from being cryogenically frozen, and my electric meter hasn’t been upgraded to a smart meter, and obviously, I’m a bit chilly, could you spare me a shilling to heat my house.’ That shilling couldn’t leave my pocket quick enough.

Call me naïve, but I don’t think a lot of the people begging have very much money, and even if they did, I don’t think asking hundreds of disinterested people a day for fifty pence is the most lucrative career. I’ve only seen one or two take the money then climb into their brand new Jaguar. So I feel there may be a more elegant solution to the begging situation.

THE WORTHING BYPASS
This column will not change your taste in celebrity chefs
IT WILL, DEAR HACKOLYTE, make you a better person. And you should aspire to that because you’re not one now, not by a long shot. By the end of devouring these droplets of wisdom – milked from the Heavenly Gods of the South Downs Way (they should put that in the tourist brochures) – people will notice your transformation. They will stop you in the street. You will radiate a heavenly glow, be able, should you wish, to walk on water. You could, if you’re a mover, splash up a samba on the seafront. You will be better than the next man. Or woman. Or both. In fact everybody else. Because you will have assumed a quality very few people have on earth: selective superiority. If you believe all that, you’re crackers, obviously, but such passive-aggressive, self-aggrandised nonsense is gleamed directly from a collection of the most arch, pruning, megalomaniacal monsters the world has ever produced. I refer, of course, to celebrity LET’S HOPE TV chefs.

bigheads the world has ever produced. They are romantically deified media monoliths, lorded as the velvet-voiced wizards of culinary wonder, over-paid and far-too-highly-regarded TV meal planners. Yes, let’s take them down a peg or two from the selfimposed exile of their sky-high pedestals. For somehow, their rampant egomania has gone unchecked, granted permission by an invisible televisual code of conduct like a mindless chicken given a free range pass from their caged pen at a Bernard Matthews factory. It is stunningly obvious, yet nobody seems to notice. Here it goes. Everything they touch – spice, herb, fish or fowl – is a conductor for their self-labelled brilliance. Everything, literally everything, is gorgeous, divine, special, delectable, flavoursome, juicy, succulent, amazing, dazzling, mind-blowing… the list is as long as your vocabulary. But make no mistake. It is not the chicken breast or slab of steak itself. No, it is the transformation, the cookeryjiggery-pokery, the conjurer-supreme cultivating salivating slices of divinity from the floury fog of a studio kitchen. It is their brilliance, their unrelenting capacity for culinary creativity that turns a floppy haddock into a majestic morsel fit for royalty and royalty alone (cue soothing voiceover previewing a majestic banquet so grand we are not afforded a glimpse, not given the poxy collective coffers proffered by our listless TV license contribution). Then there’s the subtext, the patronising subtext. You could do this. You really could. It’s so simple, anyone could do it. But not really. You couldn’t. Not how I do it. Not as brilliant as me. You could try – God-willing you’ll give it a go and buy a whole book shelf of my holy scriptures – but you’ll never be me. Never. You’re following a recipe, I’m creating magic. How many people do you hear proclaim that they served a camembert-brochili-turnip-bakerisotto-tumble-thingy-mejig straight from Jamie’s cookbook that tasted so much better than when he did it on the Naked Braggart? I’ll tell you how many times. Not once. Never. Because nobody else on earth has the unfathomable, elevated self-worth of the most mild-mannered, wellmeaning celebrity chef.
They’re a breed apart. They’re not just better than us, they don’t belong in the same realm. They come from Middle Earth, have more wisdom to impart than Gandalf on a rowdy night out with the cool hobbits from the Shire, and more knowledge than Professor Brian Cox, standing on Mars, patronising us across the spacetime continuum, whatever that is. The problem they have is that Keith Floyd broke the mould, set the high-water mark so unattainably well, high, that no-one has come close to measuring up since. His swaying, slightly sozzled, permanently grouchy persona, forever hectoring poor Clive to point the camera at him or the food, created such a larger than life caricature that every Tom, Nigella and Sweary Scot have been trying to live up to it ever since, and have failed miserably. We are lucky enough to have our own genuinely talented Singing Chef, a Sussex marvel who serenades while marinating fish. James Martin came closest on Saturday Morning Kitchen as he seamlessly juggled omelettes, interviewed minor celebs and miraculously kept his cheery shirts and loose fitting waistcoats stain-free whilst pan frying a sizzling steak, flavoured by a droll aside to camera 2. Let’s hope TV execs bypass Worthing and leave the Singing Chef for our exclusive enjoyment. You can keep all the shouty, sweary kitchen hell bullies – we prefer a hearty sing-song whilst cracking open our crab cakes. n
