How did you get it off the ground?

Worthing Artist Adam Seaman from creative partnership ‘As Described’, talks to us about “Geminate II”, which recently occupied the gallery windows of Colonnade House. So, what is Geminate II and how does it work? Geminate is an interactive digital art installation. As passersby move in front of the gallery windows of Colonnade House, their physical form and movements are presented back to them in real-time. We’ve used video projection, motion sensing cameras and bespoke visual software to create colourful, abstract and constantly changing image textures. What inspired you and how did the idea begin? We were really privileged to have an accompanying score written by Andrew Phillips. He’s an Oscar nominated composer, who also lives locally. His soundtrack was an ode to Worthing and he wove recordings taken from under the pier with snippets of oral history from the Sussex Library Sound archive (thanks to Martin Hayes) to create something unique and playful. What have been the highlights for you? Watching Geminate bring strangers together, to share in some precious abstract moments, to smile, explore and let go for a few moments in their daily lives was a constant source of enjoyment for us. However, a stand out moment a gentleman in his eighties was dancing - his daughter later told us he used to be a professional dancer and it was the first time she’s seen him dance in decades. It’d bought tears to her eyes. What’s next for As Described? The world of Worthing is our oyster! There are a lot of exciting things happening in Worthing. We are busy working on a few ideas, but whatever we do, we will remain true to being collaborative and inclusive.

Worthing Artists Open Houses: 17/18 June, 24/25 June, 1/2 July

ARTS | CULTURE

Three Summer Weekends of Art Hazel Imbert, artist and member of the WAOH steering group tells us more about the three Summer weekends of art and the people behind the project. If you wake up on the morning of June 17th ( or 18th, 24th, 25th or the first weekend in July!) and want to feel glad you live in Worthing, step out and visit your nearest Artists Open House, and rejoice in the creativity on your doorstep. Wherever you live in the borough, there will be a venue not far off; if you have a bike, a car or can go by bus or train, all 70 venues on this year’s art trail are yours for the taking. 70 venues! Studios and semis, garages and galleries, schools and colleges – exhibiting the work of 325 local artists. The range is wide and rich; the event embraces work from artists starting out, alongside artists of international renown. Central venues include the Yoga Centre, Cloud Gallery, St Clare’s Day Centre and Colonnade House. In the exotic east, start with stylish Onslow Court, and as the sun sets in the west, walk The Strand in Ferring to find a venue full of variety. You might be asking yourself how such a largescale event gets put on, and possibly how come you have never heard of it! Worthing Artists Open Houses has been around in various shapes and sizes for about 17 years. For the past two years it has been in the hands of a steering group, made up of six local women. They have wide experience of arts administration as well as being practising artists. And they are all passionate about the Open Houses event. I have to declare an interest; I am one of them. I asked the other five to describe why they give their time and skills to organise this event. Naomi Frances: I believe the arts empower people; exhibiting art boosts confidence and connects everyone’s creative endeavour. Open Houses is an

inclusive celebration of the arts in Worthing and it’s a real privilege to be part of the group that makes it happen. Lorraine Heaysman: I agree about making it inclusive, for artists who may not normally get the chance to exhibit. It’s a great way to facilitate and promote the amazing and very talented artists we have in Worthing! Shout it from the roof tops…plus, I love working alongside five very talented, clever, hard-working, passionate lovely women! Linda Bernhard: It’s exciting and motivating to be a part of such an enthusiastic and supportive team passionate about bringing the community together and championing local artists and makers. I love feeling inspired and sharing my knowledge and experience with other like-minded people.

WOAH steering group members

Mary Tennant: I wanted to be part of something where I could be useful. We discuss all aspects of what we think we should do and what our artists and visitors might think. I learn a great deal and enjoy working with a group of women who care as much about the big stuff as the small details. And Rebecca McCardle sums it all up beautifully: It’s a jewel of an event; not only does it unite the many wonderful artists in Worthing, but by inviting the wider community into our homes and spaces, by welcoming and sharing, it helps remind us of the generous and positive side of human nature. I would just add that we have fun, get to be imaginative and creative, and do it all for love

Book Review: Sanditon, Jane Austen

ARTS | CULTURE

The literary world is set to celebrate the bicentenary of one of our most treasured authors. Jane Blackwell, Community Librarian, Worthing Library, reviews Sanditon and its special link to Worthing. When I was approached to give a short book review I immediately thought ‘how on earth do I choose which book’?! As a Librarian naturally one of the perks of my profession is that a lot of my time is spent surrounded by a whole host of novels, short stories, the latest blockbusters and one-hit wonders, but this request came at an opportune moment. The literary world is set to celebrate the bicentenary of one of our most treasured authors, Jane Austen, and happily Worthing enjoys a special link with the novelist. On discovering more about this connection I settled upon reading a lesser known Austen novel, Sanditon. Austen started writing the story in early 1817 but a steady decline in health resulted in only 12 chapters being written. Sanditon is set at a small Sussex seaside resort, almost universally agreed to be mirrored on Worthing and is in essence a commentary on the growth of seaside resorts. Austen visited the town during the latter part of 1805 and is understood to have been heavily influenced by the town and the people she encountered there. One of the central characters of the novel is an enthusiastic, if slightly ridiculous gentleman, who spends most of his time dedicated to the raising of the town’s profile. There is some suggestion that this character is loosely based on Edward Ogle, a wealthy gentleman and key figure in Worthing’s transformation during the early 19th century, and whom Austen was acquainted with. The novel opens with the overturning of Mr & Mrs Parker’s carriage during a quest to engage a doctor to take residence at Sanditon, revealing Parker’s designs for his favoured

seaside resort. The novel gives us an insight to Austen’s ambivalent attitude to places of ‘health’, the benefits of which are fulsomely praised by Mr Parker, ‘The sea air and sea bathing together were nearly infallible … They were anti-spasmodic, anti-pulmonary, anti-septic, anti-bilious and antirheumatic.’ Austen’s famous witticism, a talent which makes her novels such a pleasure to read, continues throughout Sanditon. It is not difficult to read this unfinished novel once you have accepted that the place of Sanditon was influenced by Worthing and as a result you begin to imagine the early formation of our town, plotting the characters movements through cobbled streets. There is a remarkable statement within the first couple of pages of the book, ‘But Sanditon itself - everybody has heard of Sanditon, the favourite for a young and rising bathing-place, certainly the favourite spot of all that are to be found along the coast of Sussex; the most favoured by nature, and promising to be the most chosen by man’ which becomes all the more poignant as it feels Worthing is working hard to meet such proclamation. Today’s Worthing I would argue is a vibrant town with an eclectic mix of culture all year round - the events listings in this magazine is testament to that. I must admit that I gave a little smile as I read Mr Parker’s enthusiastic advocacy and reflected on how people today continue to work hard for our town’s benefit. Sadly, little remains of Worthing at the time of Austen’s visit but there are a few gems still to be discovered as you walk around the streets. Jane Austen’s Worthing – a local guide by Janet Clarke is a fantastic resource and is a must read for anyone interested in plotting Austen’s excursions through Worthing.

Stanford’s Cottage, where Austen stayed during her visit is still standing. Now a branch of Pizza Express, behind the faint aroma of garlic and sounds of squealing children resonating down the small street, you can glimpse the once quiet seaside resort. The outlook at the time of Austen’s stay would have been rural and there would have been a clear view of the sea from the south side of Stanford’s Cottage. Just along from there is Colonnade House, which at the time was one of two libraries in the town, a place Austen would have almost certainly visited. Likewise, Antony Edmond’s Jane Austen’s Worthing, the real Sanditon is well worth a read as it gives a detailed account of the town Austen encountered and paints a vivid portrait of the people associated with it. I urge everyone to revisit Austen’s work during this special anniversary. Sanditon was a thoroughly enjoyable read, the mix of characters, the injection of Austen’s sharp wit, the glimpses of recognisable Worthing and the fact that the story will never be concluded make this an enticing read.

SPOTLIGHT on… Gill Day This month’s featured writer is a retired nurse and writer. Having written several articles for The Nursing Times, Gill signed up for a Creative Writing course at Northbrook College and has been writing ever since. In 2010 Gill won first prize in the themed section of the West Sussex Age UK (as it was) Annual Literary Competition. Breathless

Watch out for Wilde – now with Lottery funding! We’re thrilled to announce that Worthing WOW has been awarded £9,700 for our new project: ‘Wilde: Worthing rediscovers its lost connection’. Oscar Wilde holidayed in Worthing with his wife and sons in 1894, and it was here he wrote his most famous play – “The Importance of Being Earnest” – whose main character is a Mr Jack Worthing. Over 2017 and 2018, Worthing WOW will uncover the town’s hidden heritage and create a comprehensive picture of the Worthing that Wilde would have experienced in 1894, through a trail around Worthing Museum, an exhibition at St Paul’s Gallery and a series of educational walks, talks and packs for schools. Melody Bridges, Artistic Director of WOW Worthing, said: “We’re delighted that our charity has been awarded National Lottery funding to enable our celebration of Oscar Wilde. I’m currently preparing the educational workshops for local primary schools – it’s a very exciting time.” See the trailer now at www.worthingwow.co.uk

She closed her eyes as heat seeped through her clothes and moistened her skin. A tickle in her throat was threatening to give her away. She swallowed hard but it was as if she hadn’t had a drink for days. How long had it been? She couldn’t remember. Don’t fight. It’ll soon be over. His head was inches away from hers but she couldn’t feel his breath. She wanted to scream. Tell him to stop. Fearing she would slip backwards she clung on, unable to push him away. Numbness was seeping across from where he’d caused her intense pain. She’d squeezed her eyes together and dared not open them again.

Where was that interminable music coming from? It sounded as though it was coming down to swamp her. She was drowning. Choking. Would he never stop? Never leave her alone. I think he’s trying to kill me. He won’t get away with it. Everybody knows where I am… even if they weren’t interested. On and on it went. The droning of his instrument of torture. The smell burning her nostrils. She could taste it. She yearned to come up for air. To breathe freely. To hear what was being said. Be free to respond. Now she was spitting blood and grit. Dribbling fresh water. But at least she was free. And then he spoke. Beware the wrath of a mutilated woman, young man. ‘Okay, Mrs Symes, all done. Don’t eat or drink for a couple of hours. The rest of your teeth are fine. See you in a year, unless you have any further problems.’ ‘Thank you. You’re very kind but I’m quite sure I won’t – have any further problems that is – so, yes, see you in a year. Never again! I mean it this time. If you would like to be featured in our Spotlight section, send your poems, stories, articles or reviews to submissions@worthingwow.co.uk

Competition time

Competition winners The challenge, to write a Shakespearean Ode to a Banana, produced a whole ‘bunch’ of really talented entries. Congratulations, then, to Joanne Lennox for her inspired parody. Shall I compare thee to bunch of grapes? Thou lookst more lovely sitting on a plate. £2 a melon is too much to pay, And peaches hath too short an expiry date. Sometime too bright the rosy apple shines, Though often it is brown and dull inside. But your vivid yellow never declines, Your lovely curves you always wear with pride. From you delicious puddings can be made— Banana custard or banana split. Thou put’st all other fruits right in the shade, For pears and plums I do not care a bit.

You’re an a-peeling treat in my packed lunch— You always seem to stand out from the bunch!

With Wilde in mind… Jack Worthing, the central character in “The Importance of Being Earnest”, was found in a handbag in the cloakroom of Victoria station. Imagine you were handed a bag that wasn’t yours: what might you find in it? Short stories maximum 300 words, please, to submissions@worthingwow.co.uk

And a special mention must go to our youngest entrant, Robyn Mitchell, aged seven. Alas, to my Banana Alas, my poor Banana I have been waiting for this day like nobody else You see, my poor Banana, I know you would hate to see the sight of a yellow, dainty Banana’s skin to be peeled off gently. My Mother’s ancestor to which I have never met, said just before he died of the horridest Smallpox “I had a skill of knowledge, not that my brain is old, just that there one day will be a future fruit that will be splashed with the colour...!” That was the end of him! But I have said enough now, I am going to eat you!

Calling all WOWsers! We’re still looking for budding writers of 15 and under! Send us your poems, stories and articles (no more than 250 words please) for a chance to be published on this page. Your submissions should be sent to submissions@worthingwow.co.uk and marked WOWsers in the subject line. For those of you who have not yet stepped into this former church on Chapel Road, we recommend that you take time to do so; you’ll be met with a lovely café atmosphere and a warm welcome from the friendly staff. If you’re lucky like us, you may even find a Jazz band performing, which was a great addition to the setting on this particular Saturday afternoon. Saturdays are really busy for the Taylors and as we usually start our

We both opted for the burger with cheese and bacon (we weren’t messing around!). It was busy, so we waited a little while for our food. Worth the wait, when our lunch arrived it looked great and tasted even better.

We also loved that St Paul’s has a wide selection of toys and games to keep your kids entertained. This, along with the excellent baby changing facilities makes St Paul’s a clear favourite. After our lunch we retired to the comfy chairs and enjoyed some hanger free jazz whilst our little girl played happily. All in all, a successful family outing; we will definitely be back. COMMUNITY

Midnight, Saturday 24 June 2017 Worthing Leisure Centre

Walk through the night to support St Barnabas House hospice St Barnabas House is preparing for its biggest ever Night to Remember midnight walk to celebrate 10 years of holding the event. Taking place on Saturday 24 June, the tenth popular moonlit fundraising event will see over 1,000 ladies setting off at midnight on a walk along Worthing seafront to raise vital funds for their local hospice.

Over the past nine years, over 9,000 ladies have taken to the streets of Worthing and have collectively raised over £1.3 million for St Barnabas House, their local hospice.

WAL

Setting off from Worthing Leisure Centre, ladies can choose to walk 7, 13.1 or 20 miles, with the 20 mile route taking ladies all the way to Shoreham and back. As it is the tenth time the hospice has held the walk, there will be some very special surprises to ensure that it truly is a ‘Night to Remember’. This year St Barnabas are asking ladies to ‘light up the night’ and cover themselves in fairy lights and glow products to light up Worthing seafront. They are also delighted to announce that this year the route will take the ladies down Worthing pier, with all three routes able to walk around the pier for the first time! Registration for Night to Remember is open and closes on Monday 12 June. You can register to take part at www.nighttoremember.org.uk/stb. St Barnabas House is in need of an army of volunteers to help make the event successful. They need over 250 volunteers between the hours of 9pm Saturday 24 June and 8am Sunday 25 June to help with marshalling the route, handing out refreshments, issuing medals and registration. If you’ve got what it takes to motivate the wonderful walkers please sign up at www.nighttoremember.org.uk/stb/event/volunteer/.

The X Factor—5 Reasons to Vote COMMUNITY

4 May 2017—West Sussex County Council Elections

May the Fourth is not just a sacred date for Star Wars fans, it is also Election Day for West Sussex County Council. Whilst local Councilors are not responsible for determining the fate of a Galaxy Far, Far Away, they do have a major say in a lot of what happens in our home town of Worthing. So, if you are 18 years of age or over, here are some 5 reasons to get to the Ballot Box this month:

1. Money Talks In the last financial year (2016 -17), the West Sussex County Council Budget was 1.3 billion – a not inconsiderable amount! The person you vote for on 4 May will have a say in how this money is spent, so it is 5 minutes well spent to figure out who will spend it best for you

2. Decisions that Directly Affect You The County Council is responsible for providing some key services for the County and our town, including: • • • •

Social Care Education Public Health Public Transport

We are all affected by the provision of these services in one way or another. What do you think these services should look like in Worthing? Use your vote to support the Candidate who best reflects your views

3. It’s Quick and Easy It takes 10 minutes, you can do it anytime between 7am and 10pm, and you can then reward yourself with a quick stop in your favourite coffee shop/pub on your way home

4. Keep them on their toes The right to vote them out keeps politicians effective and listening to what people want. You can hold your Councilor’s to account at the ballot box – your X tells them that they are doing a good job (or not)!

5. Be Part of the Conversation The County Council is facing some major challenges in the coming years, which basically boil down to less money and more demand for its services. Worthing and West Sussex need some excellent Councilors to ensure that our schools,

social care, health and transport systems are fit for purpose. Vote on 4 May and become a key part of the conversation about the future of Worthing and West Sussex For further information, check out the West Sussex County Council Website westsussex.gov.uk/ about-the-council/how-thecouncil-works/elections/ electoral-process/ A list of candidates can be found here http://www2. westsussex.gov.uk/ds/elections/ statementofpersonsnominated040517. pdf

Lions International is 100 years old this year!

COMMUNITY

To mark this fantastic occasion, join Worthing Lions Club for a great day out in Beach House Park, Saturday 3 June. Worldwide Lions are celebrating 100 years of working with local communities and raising funds to help others less fortunate. Worthing Lions have planned to celebrate the occasion at Beach House Park on Saturday 3 June, where there will be a craft fayre, a family fun day from 10am – 4pm and an Abba Tribute Duo show, Chiquitita, in the marquee in the evening. Tickets for the show will be £10 each. Worthing Lions are always looking for sponsorship and for the last 14 years have run the Festival/Firework Display at the end of July. They also organise the fantastic firework display on 5 November each year as part of the Tide of Light Festival. All this is free to the public but they do need to raise funds and find sponsors. Last year they were rightly proud to say that they gave £8,000 to Canine Partners to provide for another four dogs, as well as donating funds throughout the year to many worthy causes in our town.

Worthing Lions said “We are fortunate this year to have the very generous sponsorship of Yeomans who will be exhibiting cars on the seafront from the Nissan, Toyota, Peugeot and Honda ranges on 29 & 30 July. We are also fortunate to have Glyn Jones Estate Agents sponsoring the seafront events in July and the Funfair on Broadwater Green on Saturday 24 June. Stevens Funfair will be operating on the Worthing prom from Friday 21 July – Monday 14 August.

“Where there is a need, there is a Lion” If you would like to know more about sponsorship, please contact Lion Tony Holley on 07974 671662 or for further info please visit worthinglions.co.uk

Apparently, around this time there is some daft rumour that summer has started. You remember summer? Vaguely. No on a serious point summer is when this lovely town of ours really comes into its own. It’s when you remember why you live here in the first place.

year, I have come to appreciate the less obvious things in my life. I started to notice that the sunrise and sunsets over Worthing are quite breathtaking. I don’t know if that is because there is less pollution or they have always been that way and I now actually look up more often and appreciate what is on my front door step. Probably, it is the latter, and that has to be a good thing, not being trapped on Facebook looking at other people’s lives, but making the most of what I have in mine.

Just take a walk down to Splashpoint and see all the kids playing on the beach and around the ‘magic stones’ as they are known in our house. There are hours of fun to be had running in and out of some big stones with a sprinkler system built in them, a simply genius idea.

I remember a few years ago when we came on scouting missions to suss Worthing out before we moved here and first stumbled on the area.

Now for my son, it meant none of that. A 10-minute scoot and we are on beachfront for lashings of fresh air, a never ending list of games to play and places to explore in pretty much most weathers (and it’s free of course). At four years old this will be the foundations of his earliest memories, How great is that!!

It was a blisteringly hot day, and the walkway was full of happy smiling families, and as I squinted into the distance along the coast to Hove, I remember thinking, that this really was a stunning place to live and reminded me of being on South Beach in Miami. Take a walk and see the New Forest Ponies conservation grazing at Cissbury Ring

FITNESS | WELLBEING

Photos: katnaish.co.uk

As a busy family we always look for places to go at weekends, burn some energy and get some fresh air into our lungs. If the activity also happens to be free and local, it’s a winner, to be revisited again and again. One such place for us is Cissbury Ring. We took a lovely stroll on Mother’s Day, which also happened to be a stunner of a day. It was also our first visit since the introduction of the wonderful New Forest Ponies.

Cissbury is a great place to get away from it all for an hour or two, watch the ponies, maybe play hide and seek, even fly a kite in the open areas. If you do plan to walk for a while, there are many spots for picnics; even on sunny, busy days, there’s always a quiet place If you just want to sit back, relax and enjoy the wide views. So what are you waiting for? Summer is on its way and Cissbury Ring is waiting to be explored. We referred to Worthing Heritage Trails on our walking review. The Heritage Trails are created by the Worthing Heritage Alliance and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Content extracts, with thanks to Chris Hare. To find out more about Cissbury and to follow trails of archaeological interest, we recommend you download the detailed and informative Worthing Heritage Trail brochure for Cissbury Ring (No. 11) at worthingheritagetrails.org.uk. To discover the butterflies and the wildlife living on this historic site, take a look at the National Trust walking trail nationaltrust.org.uk/ cissbury-ring/trails/cissburyring-butterfly-walk. The National Trust advises that the ponies are semi-wild and should not be fed.

First, a little about Cissbury Ring. It’s the highest point in Worthing, rising to 183m, so stunning views in all directions are pretty much guaranteed. On a clear day, you have panoramic views across Worthing, all along the coast, beyond Brighton, even as far as the chalk cliffs to the East and as far as the Isle of Wight to the West. It’s also the largest hill fort in Sussex and has a history dating back over 5,000 years. As well as being a site of great archaeological importance, Cissbury is also home to rare flora and fauna. We were there to enjoy the sunshine and to seek out the ponies. The National Trust introduced the ponies to the area to help control the growth of scrub. We think the addition of ponies is also a great motivator to keep little ones walking in search of them. It won’t take long though and they are beautiful to watch, naturally calm and perfectly scruffy in the way nature intended.

Getting there: From Worthing head North on the A24 through Findon Valley and turn right into May Tree avenue and first left at Storrington Rise following the sign posts to the car park at the bottom of the hill. A 500m uphill walk will take you to the top. There’s also another entrance along Nepcote Lane which has a much smaller carpark and a steeper trek to the top. Terrain is quite bumpy and uneven and unfortunately not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs. Kat Naish runs worthingmums.com. See worthingmums.com/ lovelocal pages for the latest feature on places around Sussex for families.

GoodGym

FITNESS | WELLBEING

Running with a Mission A new and innovative approach to fitness has just hit the streets of Worthing. GoodGym are a community of runners who combine a weekly run with physical tasks to improve the local area. Rather than expend energy in gyms the group gets out into the community and channels that energy into projects that really need it. GoodGym was founded in 2009 and has seen great success as it expands across the country. Last year its contribution to fitness was recognised as it won the Sports Industry Community Programme of the year award and the very first Innovation in Running award at the Running Awards. Thanks to funding from Worthing Borough Council and South Downs Leisure the project has now arrived in Worthing. All sessions are free to attend and open to runners of all abilities. Belinda told us “I’m not a fast runner but our qualified trainer Julia who leads the run is on hand to offer expert advice for those of us wanting to improve their fitness. She makes sure I’m never left behind and is very encouraging and supportive, as are the rest of the volunteers.” For the launch event on 13 March the group ran to Victoria Park for some raking, pruning and sweeping in preparation for spring. Runners can also visit isolated older members of the community as part of their weekly workouts. Members are paired with an older or vulnerable person in Worthing, who will be called their ‘coach’ as they become the runner’s motivation to get off the sofa and go for that run.

GoodGym runners heading off from Splashpoint

“The introduction of a young fit and healthy person into my life has had a remarkable beneficial effect on my own self-esteem and confidence”, says Barry. And, the motivation is an important factor for GoodGym members, as runner Rebecca points out. “Those lazy weeks when I just want to sit on the sofa, it gets me up, it gets me out there knowing that someone’s waiting”. If you would like to join the GoodGym Worthing group head to goodgym.org. The group meets at 6pm every Monday evening at Splashpoint Leisure Centre.

A Day In The Life of a Diva…

Wake to find my Assistant has prepared my schedule. Thankfully she’s responded well to her NLP (New Lurcher Programming) training class. I’m not a morning person tbh, we sighthounds do like a lie in. Off out to Worthing town to meet my public. En route, I sniff

1pm Snack Lunch & Run out some hidden gems around the Worthing station. My Assistant was mad for the To Be Worn Again warehouse monthly Kilo Sale. Choose any amount of vintage retro pieces to be weighed out for only 15 smackeroos!

Yum te tum. Stopping for coffee and a snack at the cute as a button Black Crow Coffee down at Worthing Central Station crossing. Great artisan coffee and lovely staff. Darlings. After a quick bonjour to the tres lovely humans at The Pantry and Hobden’s, I put my paw down; it’s

time for me to take the lead. My Assistant had scheduled us in for another caffeine hit at the gorgeous Inkquisitive tattoo bar but I’m on to Nathan’s Mobile Coffee Van at Victoria Park. Gets me some extra valuable run time. You humans can sit and have coffee while your little friend hangs out with us.

3pm Beach Life My Assistant once rented a fab beach hut for us to hang out on the beach all day, but I couldn’t be doing with all that sitting around. I want to be off! Doing interesting Roxy stuff! Like running up and

introducing myself to complete strangers and being cute! You can go with your dog down to the beach outside the Pier and Heene Road boundaries. Good for us and good for you. Check the tide times. And run around!

5pm Sun’s Gone Over the Yard Arm Time for a cheeky half (water for me dear) at Anchored In Worthing, just off the seafront in West Buildings. The landlords are very welcoming to our furry brethren, who patiently wait for their Assistants to avail themselves of several stoops of their finest ales of an evening (hic).

7pm Quiet Night In After Dinner (my Assistants might be allowed a takeaway), we settle down for a movie or some TV. I particularly enjoy the Attenborough wildlife programmes and cannot help following the action with great interest. I don’t know why. That’s my Day In The Life Of A Diva. I know, I know, it’s a lot to pack in but my commute isn’t bad and I do feel I’ve got my work / life balance fairly well sorted. If you or your Assistant need some work / life coaching, I’ll see you on the couch.

lots Ta-ta and rlings! of love da

Business As Unusual Braving entrepreneurship to do work that matters to you Here & Now regularly includes articles by Blueprint 22 young adults, who write about projects that they lead or are involved in, many of which provide opportunities for other young adults to get involved. This month the Blueprint 22 young adults interviewed BP22 founder, Amanda Baker. Here, Amanda tells us why she started Blueprint 22, how and what’s next.

financially. We now have a healthy yearly turn over with both full-time and part-time staff. This wouldn’t have been possible without really going for it at the start.

What is Blueprint 22? A not for profit youth organisation for 16-25 year olds

What is the most rewarding thing about your business? Simply, the opportunity to help people help themselves and to then encourage them to help others. Young adults are free to come and go from BP22 in a way that suits them, and that freedom of engagement suits the 16-25 year age bracket.

Where is it based? Brighton to Bognor-Regis with a range of projects and activities happening in Worthing. When was BP22 born and why? 6 years ago. I was working with a group of young adults who were bored and disillusioned with local youth provision. I gave them the opportunity to create an organisation in which they made all the decisions, decided the type of projects that we ran and were enabled to bring their ideas to fruition. How much planning and preparation was involved in setting up BP22? There were many discussions about what we wanted to do and how we could do it, we discussed the type of organisation we wanted to be and why it was needed. Making those plans was useful as a key starting point but learning ‘on the job’ gave us more scope for understanding the market, firming up what we really wanted to do and making mistakes. The mistakes although challenging really enabled growth. How did you get the money to set up the business? I used £2000 from my savings and although this gave us a small cushion, the organisation was built on ‘sweat equity’ and proving ourselves so that funders would back us. The first 2 years of any start-up are tough and every single second was dedicated to making the organisation viable

What keeps you motivated during difficult times? The belief of the young adults who have been involved in the organisation over the past 6 years. We have worked with over 1500 young people and run over 100 projects. We might not have always got it right but we have tried really hard to do the right thing. We have stayed true to our core values of always being led by the needs and wants of our target age group. What advice would you give to anyone who wants to set up their own business in Worthing? Trust your gut instinct. Find the people that will help you Stay focused on your goals, Tune out the negative people, Always pay the tax man/ woman, Realise everyone is scared when they start-up, Know that mistakes help you learn. What are your plans for the future of BP22? We are about to recruit a new team of project and sessional workers so that we can reach more young adults and support both their personal development and the environment they live in. As always, we remain focused on People, Projects, Potential.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Here’s just some of the people, projects, new business start-ups and enterprising work that’s been supported within the BP22 youth organisation.

Charlotte Golby - Hair In The Community Blueprint 22 has helped me accomplish getting a start up grant from the local council, which has helped buy new lines of colour, hairdressing scissors etc. so that I can visit clients in their own homes, especially people who are isolated and help them get more confident to go into salons.

Lois Windeatt - Tides Of Change The reason I set up the project Tides of Change was because I love history and like to look at the history of local areas, including Worthing and I wanted other young adults to realise how much their local area has changed through the years.

Shannon Colbourne - Reaching Out To make my idea of Reaching Out project happen I had to submit grant applications to get the funding with support from BP22. I used O2 Think Big and Worthing Community Chest. When doing my first grant application, I found it quite difficult as there was so much information needed. When I found out I had got the money I was overwhelmed that what was only an idea in the beginning would become real!

Are you aged 16-25? Interested in meeting new people and getting involved in projects? Check out the Blueprint 22 website blueprint22.org.uk Want to run your own project? Get in touch - they can help you make it happen. Have an idea for a project but don’t know what to do next? They can help you create a Blueprint 22 project plan. Need some money to run a project? Is Your Worthing Group Looking for Funding?

COMMUNITY

Since 2001 Worthing Community Chest has awarded over £300,000 to non-profits in Worthing. Does your group or event need support with funds this summer? Maybe Worthing Community Chest can help! Worthing Community Chest is a local charity who give grants of up to £1,500 to local groups and charities that match their criteria and whose objective is to improve community life in Worthing. “If your group is in need of a boost to help you get through a difficult time or if you are planning to start up a local project and need some financial help to get it off the ground then contact Worthing Community Chest” said Trustee Fred Weller. “in 2012, our Organ Club was struggling to keep going. We had a strong membership – and still do – but our overheads were pushing us to the limit. There was a real danger that we would not be able to continue unless we could find some help to get us through the next twelve months. We applied, and were awarded, a Worthing Community Chest grant which helped the club go from strength to strength.” Worthing Community Chest works in partnership with the Borough Council. The Council put funds into the Chest and also provides their office space. They match the Council’s money with their own funds that come from fundraising and a property they own.

“After more than 15 years the Worthing Community Chest continues to go from strength to strength” said Chair, Andy Hammond “Last year saw another increase in the value of grants Cheque presentation to Worthing Town Football Club awarded, and the number of local groups supported. Our office is based in Worthing Town Hall. If you want to know if we can help you, or if you have an idea for a project, why not pop in for a chat?” To apply for a grant visit worthingcommunitychest.org, where there is also lots of additional information about how to apply. You can also call Grants Administrator, Inga Lielgalve, on 01903 221080.

LIVE MUSIC

Jukebox Junkies,

The Broadwater, Worthing, Saturday 25 March

‘We are family…’ As a fully paid-up member of the Gobby Musicians Society, it’s long been on my mind that music has become somewhat devalued in recent years, due in no small part to the dominance of the mp3 download and the fact that music is available almost everywhere for ‘free’ these days. In amongst this disconnected and disembodied devaluing, spare a thought Dear Readers for the thousands of ‘weekend warriors’ across the country that take to the stages and beer-stained floors of our pubs & clubs every weekend to bring you a few hours entertainment on your Saturday night out. In my humble opinion, these weekend warriors - more commonly known as Cover Bands - don’t often get the credit that some of them so richly deserve.

…bands like this are so good we should be paying an entrance fee to go see them… So, I’d like to share with you a great story, a proper Worthing story in fact, about one such cover band called the Jukebox Junkies who we can proudly say hail from this town and who were burning down

the house with some ‘hazy cosmic jive’ last Saturday night at The Broadwater.

all the panache of Parliament or Funkadelic… Jukebox Junkies know their past but are clearly looking to the future so they can create a new story.

I said it’s a great story and it is... It has history; a band started Musically, everything’s there; the by keyboard player Nick, one of drums are rock solid, keyboards in the founding members of Dirty the groove, the bass is effortless Shoes, who - as many local musicgoers will know – were/are part of Worthing’s rock & roll family tree, having entertained audiences in the South for over 25 years. And when Nick found he couldn’t continue with The Shoes due to the onset of Parkinson’s, he started Jukebox Junkies in 2013 with his son Jack on vocals so that he could continue Photo: Loraine Perry to make music in a more creative, less stressful way. And, with the addition and creative and the guitar adds the frantic energy and musical of Pete on drums, Ollie on bass and hooks that sets them apart from Max on guitar, a whole new branch your average 12-bar blues band. of the Worthing musical family tree Equally unique is frontman Jack, was born… who’s unafraid to take the stage to the audience and command the Don’t get me wrong, it is a family room from the dancefloor with affair, but it isn’t cosy, middle of the his humour, his movement and his road Partridge Family stuff. It’s fullbrilliant vocals – one minute he’s on Sly and the Family Stone ‘There’s crooning soulfully like Prince, the a Riot Goin’ On’ kind of stuff! next minute, he delivers a menacing Artists as diverse and influential as baritone drawl like Marilyn Bowie, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Manson. Fantastic stuff! And from Beatles, Queen, The Who, Killers, the crowd’s point of view, he’s a Eurythmics, White Stripes, Soft Cell, wonderful draw. As Bryan Ferry Supergrass (amongst many others) once said, ‘boy meets girl where the all get treated impeccably by this beat goes on’ and in the Broadwater band who play with intelligence, last weekend, there was plenty reverence and a swagger that’s of that going on. Right through to infectious ... Quite simply, there’s the two encore numbers when the nothing they can’t do. From the hard-edged P-Funk stylings of Lenny audience finally realised the night’s entertainment had come to a close. Kravitz, right through to the rock ‘n’ roll piano of 70’s Elton John. Heading out into the night to go And they absolutely killed Uptown home, I was as ever, in a reflective Funk, making it sound easy with

mood. Just what is it about the Jukebox Junkies story that’s so compelling I thought? And then it hit me – the key to it is in Nick and Jack’s story. The both have to sing, play and perform, it’s not a job or a polite hobby for them - it’s an absolute inner drive. They have it, they all have it. That’s why this band

is so good. Yes, they have history and they have talent too, but more than anything, they have heart and soul in abundance. In all honesty, bands like this are so good we should be paying an entrance fee to go see them. But right now, until we change the way we value music and musicians, the very least we can do is give them all the credit they so richly deserve… And, as long as there are bands like Jukebox Junkies in Worthing, Saturday Night’s are definitely Alright! So please, go along and see them play. They deserve it. The Gobby Musician

WHAT’S ON

IN WORTHING Superstar Violinist Launches WSO’s 2017/18 Season Worthing Symphony Orchestra’s 91st season opens in style on Monday 10 July with a Summer evening concert featuring Nicola Benedetti, one of the most sought after violinists of her generation. Her ability to captivate audiences with her innate musicianship and dynamic presence, coupled with her wide appeal as a high profile advocate for classical music, has made her one of the most influential artists today. Nicola will be performing Shostakovich’s magnificent 1st Violin Concerto, which she recorded and released last year on Decca Classics, to great critical acclaim. This July 10th concert at the Assembly Hall features another superstar – Worthing’s very own Wurlitzer – the largest organ console in Europe. The combination of full orchestra and mighty Wurlitzer combined in the sonic splendour of SaintSaens Organ Symphony is a sound and sight to behold. When you add a world-famous violinist to the mix, this sublime opening concert promises a fitting start to what is shaping up to be WSO’s most spectacular season yet.

Future calendar highlights: The WSO debut of the amazing young cellist – 17-year old Sheku Kanneh-Mason – latest winner of the prestigious BBC Young Musician of the Year. Sheku comes to Worthing to play Elgar’s Cello Concerto on Sunday 4 March 2018. The Popular Classics concert is on Sunday 1 October and an

Orchestral Fireworks concert on Sunday 5 November. The traditional New Year Viennese concert, taking place on Sunday 7 January 2018is always a highlight of the WSO season. Centenary tributes are paid to Leonard Bernstein in a magical and unique concert on Friday 4th February 2018, and to bring the season to a close – the 4th Sussex International Piano Competition— attracting competitors from all across the globe, takes place in May 2018.

Sheku Kanneh-Mason

WSO has been part of the town’s music scene since 1926. Made up of professional players, WSO has developed a reputation for outstanding programming that combines well-known pieces with lesser-known hidden gems. WSO is the professional Orchestra of West Sussex. Under the leadership of principal conductor John Gibbons, the Orchestra attracts world-class soloists and performs world-class music right on our doorstep. Coupled with the perfect acoustics of the Assembly Hall, this means that classical music lovers in our part of the world are truly blessed. The Assembly Hall long been recognised by the sound engineers of BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night as having one of the finest acoustics in the country, and musicians enjoy working together in its special ambience.

Interview: Turin Brakes LIVE MUSIC

Olly Knights on performing live, writing lyrics and transcendental meditation Chance to Win!

Interview by Jack Elsdon, May 2017

HERE & NOW have teamed up with Coastal Music Ltd, who are giving away 2 tickets to see Turin Brakes on 23 June and a signed copy of their latest critically acclaimed album - Lost Property.

You’re playing at the Pavilion Theatre in my hometown of Worthing on 23 June, and there’s a nice hype brewing… Are you at your happiest creating music in the studio or performing to crowds, and why is this? Probably crowds, although some moments in the studio are thrilling, there is something about performing live that is almost otherworldly. You truly are living in the moment and aren’t really thinking very much, it’s quite meditative really, it’s also very rewarding, how many jobs are there where you get cheered and applauded after every few minutes? The creative process varies hugely between bands. What is your song writing method, and has it changed since you first started to make music? Most of the time I will write a song alone in my own space. Once I’ve collected up a few I show them to Gale and the other guys and we play through them together and make changes as a band. I guess the biggest difference of late is Rob and Edd are more involved where as for the earlier LPs it was mostly just Gale who I was bouncing ideas off.

“I just like to treat the listener’s intelligence with respect…”

To enter, visit Facebook @ hereandnowmagazineworthing Just like the competition post and comment on which song you would love to hear played live at the concert. After listening to your latest LP I got a sense that it was a lot darker than much of your earlier work, was this a conscious decision? No not at all, I’m not sure why that is, maybe it’s just getting older? Or the production perhaps? But I don’t write dark lyrics on purpose, I just like to treat the listener’s intelligence with respect like I would a good friend, I like to be honest about things. Do you have any interests (unrelated to music) which aid your creativity, and how do they contribute to your musicality? I learned transcendental meditation a few years ago which I really love, turns out being really stressed isn’t always conducive to creativity. I like to get on a skateboard occasionally too, it reminds me of the feeling of being a kid. You’re currently on tour and super busy, but are you working on any new material? What can we expect from you over the next few years? We’re in the middle of pre production for album 8 at the moment so 2018 should have a new release, we hope. What music have you been loving so far this year, and are there any bands you think we should be keeping an eye on?

30 | May 2017 | HERE & NOW

I’m loving the new Laura Marling right now. Other than that, I’m stuck on a strange mix of old disco music and soundtracks like the double life of Veronique... quite a cocktail.

Competition opens 1 May and closes midnight 29 May with the winner notified on Facebook by 2 June.

Good luck!

3 Choirs: an evening of Gospel and Soul, Saturday 17 June, St Paul’s Worthing

LIVE MUSIC

The 3 Choirs was a meeting of minds stemming from a conversation between Amanda Mitchell and Anthony Dickinson, manager of St Paul’s Arts Centre in Worthing. Amanda had just returned from a Gospel conductors weekend in Norway, led by Karen Gibson & Basil Meade (London Community Gospel Choir). Inspired by her time away, the idea was formed to bring 3 Sussex based choirs together and make Worthing ‘choir central’ for 1 night on 17 June.

teachers that we have in the UK— Ms Karen Gibson.

H&N: Why bring 3 Choirs together?

H&N: Tell us about your choir journey.

Amanda: I want to show the transformative effect choirs can have by bringing singers together as one big community or super choir and for them to learn from each other. I also wanted to give people the opportunity to learn from (in my opinion) one of the greatest

But just as importantly I want show people the power of choirs and encourage Sussex folk to get involved, whilst giving these amazing groups an opportunity to perform at their best.

Amanda: For those of us who started our choir journey back in 2001 when my amazing friend Sandy Holder founded what was then Brighton’s only open Gospel Community Choir, this event will be a wonderful opportunity to see just how far we have all travelled

musically. Such an amazing journey! I remember how vulnerable I felt when I first joined, even though I was a cheeky over confident young woman in my 20s. The act of joining and singing in a choir just stripped me of all of my bravado and left me feeling like I was standing naked in the crowd. Yet once I got over this initial hurdle, I realised that in vulnerability I found tremendous strength, and over time inner confidence. I learnt to sing, I learnt just to be me, and I made my longest standing and best friends. And although sometimes you do have to grit your teeth and force yourself to take risks through choirs we have all found such an amazing sense of community.

Since those early choir days, Karen herself has gone from strength to strength, bringing Gospel to wider communities. She is probably most famous for her appearance on Gareth Malone’s “The Choir: sing while you work” in 2013, she

launched the official Olympic Team GB Theme song at the Royal Albert Hall in 2012. And more recently was the lead Director at the BBC Gospel Proms in 2016.

Amanda: I met Karen Gibson 16 years ago when I was a member of Brighton Goes Gospel. She came in as a new choir director and we immediately knew she was be a force to be reckoned with! She inspired me and gave me the confidence to navigate my own singing journey with bands, Acapella groups and other choirs. Our paths have over the years. It was at the recent conductors’ weekender that said “Amanda, when are you going to stop saying no to everything and start saying yes?!” That has stayed with me and pushed me to where I am now, saying yes, working as a choir director myself and working with Anthony to make this event happen.

H&N: What would you say to anyone thinking of joining a choir? Amanda: Whether you believe in god, a higher power or science, there is no question as to the benefits of singing together with other people. I hear again and again from choir members “I was told that I can’t (shouldn’t) sing by my teacher and all these years I have believed that, but now I know I can, it’s amazing.” So, come and join us for an energy filled, awe inspiring, uplifting, all singing, all dancing evening!

Not a battle of the bands… LIVE MUSIC

it’s S’koolFest!

Fifty years ago, on 23 February 1967, the Jimi Hendrix Experience played the Pavilion Theatre Worthing, just one night after performing “Hey Joe” at the BBC for radio show “Parade of the Pops”. That same stage still hosts great Rock shows, and this month Mike Pailthorpe, Here & Now highlights the seventh annual S’koolFest, on Wednesday 31 May, which brings the latest wave of Worthing’s own home-grown talent to that big stage with top level sound and lighting.

S’koolFest is on the Wednesday of Half Term this year? Yes, it’s better for everyone. It avoids GCSEs stress and the whole family can come and enjoy their siblings’ first moment in the spotlight without worries of it being a school

night. Not that it’s a late night - we usually finish about 9.30pm

Can my band/duo/I still play S’koolFest? It might not be too late! Just talk to your music teacher at school first, then contact us at skoolfest@ northbrookcollege.ac.uk or the S’koolFest Facebook page. You’re representing your school, so tell us what school you’re from, we like your music teachers to be aware that you’re applying.

On hand to give feedback and advice, celebrity and music industry judges have included Malcolm in the Middle/Agent Cody Banks star Frankie Muniz, and band Kingsfoil, singer Jo Harman, Youtube star and Northbrook ex-student Hobbie Stuart, alongside A&Rs from Sony and Ministry of Sound, all of whom said afterwards how inspiring it was to see young talent given their first chance on a big stage.

Who Are These Worthing Juvenile Music Prodigies?

There’s a choir too? Each year, Spring Into Soul’s Siggi Mwasote goes into our schools, teaches two songs and the show begins with a massed S’koolFest Soul Choir. For many, this is their first time on a big stage, and gives them confidence and a great experience. Schools’ singers just need to ask us to arrange for this via the Facebook Page. S’koolFest is during May Half Term, so we have all day to set up and practice!

There are prizes? What kind of show is it? It’s all genres you could include under “popular”. We’ve made it as varied and as fun as possible, like the old Top Of The Pops format, where each artist plays their one current best song, then on to the next band.

Sussex Real Ales

Our schools are hotbeds of music talent: thanks to the encouragement and tolerance of local Music teachers, we’ve always had a flood of singers, guitarists, drummers, rappers, bassists and pianists brought to us from Sussex secondary schools and colleges.

Our S’koolFesters have won guitar set-ups and some great guitars from Worthing’s We Have Sound Guitars. Bands have won instrument lessons generously donated by Sussex Academy of Music, Hutchins Guitars, and recording sessions,

rehearsal workshops, and songwriting sessions at Northbrook College studios (now Northbrook MET).

to create an annual Worthing-based music festival for schools, and we called it... S’koolFest!

Where Are They Now?

Elijah from Durrington and Matt made a video together called “You Can Make Music With Anything” which featured on US star Ellen Degeneres’ EllenTube.

How did S’koolFest start? In 2011 the Music Department at Northbrook ran the first ever S’koolFest. We’d run a battle of the bands night the year before at Brighton’s Komedia, which was won by Davison’s Demelza’s Tea Party, and we wanted to build on the great feeling all these promising young bands and performers said they’d had from all playing together on the same stage. But we had one important change to make: If these young musicians were good enough to excite and rock more than 500 people at the Pavilion Theatre, how could any of them could be losers? So we dumped Battle of the Bands

So what’s happened to all the musical schoolkids who have paraded their talents for the last six years? Nearly five hundred young performers have played that Hendrix stage for S’koolFest. Here’s a tiny sample: The Abbo brothers from Shoreham Academy’s the Vythons are now in a great band called The Ferns who just released a new single and are gigging in London. Demelza’s Tea Party: Davison drummer Gabi is now on tour drumming with breakthrough artist Declan McKenna.

Worthing High, Woodard and St Andrew’s boys High Tyde are now regulars on Radio 1, just finished their first headline national tour, played Festivals around Europe, been signed to Maverick Management and in August are booked to play a massive stadium in Japan!

THEATRE & CINEMA

Contemporary Circus

Embracing tradition, evolving expectation

Circus isn’t just about elephants and clowns anymore. It has evolved into something much more than that, and it continues to evolve every year. As performers develop, so too do the nature of the pieces, the tricks that leave you on the edge of your seat, the subtle meaning behind the movement and the intimate relationships a performer can build with their audiences. When we hosted our first Summer of Circus festival in Worthing last year, I admit I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had the same misconception that many others do when they think of circus, thinking it was only about the more traditional elements such as the animals and top hats, and I was pleased to experience so much more than I had anticipated.

Contemporary Circus is a beautiful genre, physical theatre meets dance in a most challenging, daring and spectacular form. Every show gives you something different. Just some of the elements you can expect to see throughout include fast-paced juggling, incredible acrobatics, slick silks, high wires, Chinese poles, breath-taking balance acts and so much more. Last year we had a production where everything on stage was flown, and I mean everything, from the entire band to the drum kit soaring above the audience’s heads, who were left sitting in awe with their jaws dropped. It was a real sight to see! To become a circus performer takes an immeasurable amount of dedication. Every time I scroll through Instagram I see performers go through their daily warm up

routines, simple practices which never fail to amaze me. It takes years for a performer to specialise in a certain area, and the physical fitness and strength of every performer always inspires me to head to the gym! Our Summer of Circus became the 3rd largest contemporary circus festival in the UK, and I am so excited for our 2017 festival which runs from 16 June to 27 August, starting with the awardwinning production Kin performed by Barely Methodical Troupe – one of the hottest circus companies on the market right now. Five men compete against one another to win the approval of a highly skilled female talent scout, and in return, display a mirage of incredible circus skills to us, the audience.

Whether you’re a seasoned circus expert or you have never seen this amazing art form before, it promises to be an experience like no other and I can’t recommend it enough. Have a look at our Summer of Circus season at worthingtheatres.co.uk.

The Worthing Bypass AND FINALLY...

This column will not raise your awareness As we know, Worthing is one of the country’s best kept secrets. This can work out well as surrounding towns attract the less sophisticated explorer, magnetically attracting the chaff from the wheat as it were. On the other hand, our dear traders (and some cheaper merchants) seek new business in order to thrive and purchase higher end delicacies from their fellow traders so they might live in a utopian vacuum, which after all, is much of the point of living in Worthing. With that worst ever explanation of free market economics out of the way we can move on to discovering ways to attract tourists and travellers. At the same time we can look at bribing Michael Portillo into making another pit-stop from tootling around the country like an aimless puppy whilst trying to realise his ambition of turning the concept of a licence fee into something as abstract, surreal and irrelevant as a discussion about global politics. In short, we need to think about raising awareness of Worthing. There are many noble endeavours based around awareness raising, not least this month’s Mental Health Awareness Week in May. Thus inspired, the Ubiquitous Hack sought to discover what we’re up against and in the process came to an abrupt halt. Second day on the calendar this month? Donkey Week. Try competing with that. Why do donkeys even need a week, I ask you? Saving Donkeys Awareness Week. Yes. Donkey Sanctuary Day. Yes. But that’s not what they’re on about. They’re on about plain donkeys. Not trying to save donkeys. Not trying to teach donkeys how to run or jump or juggle. Just donkeys. I don’t get it.

National Ride a Donkey Day. That makes perfect sense, especially if you holiday in Blackpool. Donkey Week. No. What are they doing? Are there workshops? A festival? Is there donkey themed art work? Ceramic mugs with donkey heads? Donkey polo? Donkey dancing? Donkey yoga classes? Singing donkeys? Donkey races? Oh, hang on. Now we’re talking. Donkey races on the beach. With that in mind, Donkey Week should start off with a candle-lit vigil for all the donkeys suffering from low self-esteem (this must be an issue in jack and jenny world – wouldn’t you be down on yourself if everyone went around calling you an ass?), followed by a gradual upscaling of events, such as donkeys on ice. I’ve never really got the point of the annual ice rink at Steyne Gardens, other than it being nice for other people, which means I just don’t get it. Children falling over is just plain disturbing. Put donkeys on ice and you’ve got a spectacle. They might appear all legs and hooves at first but I’m sure they’ll soon get the hang of it – they do come from Iceland or wherever after all, if Sven from Frozen is anything to go by (donkeys must be pretty much the same as reindeers surely?). It would certainly put Worthing on the map, which is let’s face it, not far from Arundel/Arandalle, although they can’t pronounce it properly in the film (that reference was just for the Young People’s Branch of the Friends of the Worthing Bypass. Hope you enjoyed that Brian). The donkey gala could follow with people lining the streets, feeding the passing donkey hoard carrots as they parade along, all chuffed to bits with not being turned into dog meat (at least not until next week).

Finally, we would have the donkey derby with hundreds of pucker specimens being brought from around the country. The Whitakers would ride the prize stallions – ‘jack the lad’ I presume in donkey parlance – whilst Nick Skelton would make his farewell outing on the back of the finest looking steed this side of, well, Blackpool (apart from Iceland, Blackpool and a sanctuary in Marbella, I’m not sure donkeys actually exist anywhere else). So, there we have it, Donkey Week is all we need. If we had Worthing Awareness Week nobody would pay any attention. Piggyback on donkeys (another spectacle worth paying to see) and we’ve got it made.

We need to think about raising awareness of Worthing

No thanks necessary, Mr Mayor, you’re welcome.

The Ubiquitous Hack
