WORTHING MUSIC SCENE: WHAT’S NEXT
#Scratchpad KID IVY ‘FROM SCRATCH’, BAR 42 PHOTO: MATT GREENFIELD
Last issue we covered Worthing #Scratchpad’s free electronic workshops at Colonnade House, where young people could just drop in and learn how to make electronic music. IN APRIL THIS UNIQUE PROJECT to help build Worthing’s music scene moved out into the public, with four free events.
What’s Next
UPCOMING LOCAL ARTIST LISA LOGGENBERG SPEAKING AT WHAT’S NEXT ALONGSIDE L TO R: AUDIOACTIVE’S ADAM JOOLIA, RAG’N’BONE MAN, LEON SANDERS FROM LABEL 101BPM PHOTO: COLONNADE HOUSE - CREATIVE HUB
Event number one was ‘What’s Next’, a three hour mini music conference at St Paul’s, in which local artists, venues, labels, council, promoters & Here & Now, met up with special guests including the Arts Council, BBC Introducing’s Casey Heyburn, and AudioActive patron, rapper, singer, composer and internationally famous Rory Graham, aka Rag’n’Bone Man. Like a Seaside Rock’n’Roll version of Question Time, two panels fielded questions from the floor about getting gigs, building a career in music and how to get on the radio. Also, we heard: there’s money! Chloe Brookes from the Arts Council told an audience of more than 100 attendees “We are really interested in developing scenes if that’s what you want to do” and that they can help shape applications for grants. Alex Bailey, CEO of Worthing and Adur Councils said the presence of so many small promoters and venues made for a healthy local scene, and he also saw the need to bring more high profile artists to perform here and to tempt audiences from miles around. But it was pointed out later that nobody had actually asked Rory, aka Brit prize-winning Rag’n’Bone Man face to face to come and play a gig in Worthing, which was a schoolboy error. Let’s not allow another opportunity like that slip away.

Producers’ Retreat Event Number Four was a ‘Producers’ Retreat’ on 22 April at Coast, borrowing the ‘Put It On’ format, where producers of any genre bring unreleased tracks to be played on a decent PA to an audience of peers and music lovers. After that, let’s see what Worthing wants...

In between panels, we had live music from producer/singer-songwriter, cyber princess Mëi, with live visuals from Worthing’s visual producers to Portishead, FatBoy Slim and Pete Tong, Adam from As Described. Social media was buzzing for days afterwards with reactions ranging from excitement to annoyance, all of which were welcomed by the group behind #Scratchpad - AudioActive, Northbrook MET, Colonnade House and As Described. “We wanted to get everyone talking about building the scene” said Claire Halstead of Colonnade House.
Block Party Event Number Two was a live electronic music ‘Block Party’ in Worthing Town Centre on a Saturday afternoon from the band stand. Rapping, singing and beats brought a wide range of partly appreciative and partly bemused bystanders. Rappers were under strict instructions to keep their flows family friendly, which let’s face it will be needed if they aim to get on tv or radio.
From Scratch Event Number Three was ‘From Scratch’ at Bar 42 on 12 April, featuring live sets from the more developed artists and bands involved in the project, and you can read a review from local music fan Katlo on our website blog.

Make Me Famous, Baby At Here & Now, we love to highlight great new music events in Worthing. We also love our thriving creative music community, from pre-teens up to silver music makers, many looking to release new music and build their own fan base.
about getting gigs, contracts, writing songs, performing cover versions, producing and releasing music, getting on the radio and more. Using our contacts at Northbrook MET and the professional artists and labels living and working locally, we can help you move forward in your music career.
In 2018 being ‘famous’ might be a less attractive proposition than being known for doing something you love. We can all recognise ‘celebs’ on tv whose main talent appears to be self publicity, but to be successful in music, people do actually need to know about you. And as you’ll see below, it is very important to play live, even to small audiences. Here & Now listings are a great place to see where music is being played live, and to get your own gigs. Most gigs are licensed premises, which can be tricky for under 18s, but a few venues make special arrangements. Bar 42 often has under-18 events, there are gigs in the summer at the wonderful and unique Lido stage, and every year in May, there is S’koolFest. The eighth S’koolFest on May 23rd at Pavilion Theatre, is an annual festival sponsored by Northbrook MET, where the very best under-18 music talent from our local schools play a showcase night on the very stage Jimi
THIS IS THE FIRST OF A SERIES where we harness the wisdom and experience available locally to help all our musicians take the next steps in their careers. Over the next few issues we will give Top Tips JACOB AARON, ‘FROM SCRATCH’, BAR 42 PHOTO: MATT GREENFIELD

Hendrix played in 1967 - but with a better PA system and lights! All young bands and performers need to do to take part is to ask their school music teachers to contact Northbrook MET music department, or go direct to the S’koolFest Facebook page. Drummer Gabi King played S’koolFest with Davison band Demelza’s Tea Party in 2010, and as I type this, she is actually performing at Coachella Festival in California, US with Declan McKenna.
TOP TIPS FOR NEW BANDS And now for all ages... We asked a range of experienced music makers and promoters for one top tip for starting out in music. Here’s what they said:
Rory, aka Rag’n’Bone Man “Everyone thinks it’s the most important thing to have a presence on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever, but equally if not more important is for people to see you play live, and that’s where my own fanbase is, on the live stage and I seriously think it’s still one of the most important things. So go and do everything regardless whether it’s paid or for a 4 pack of Red Stripe, or if their sound system sucks, or there’s holes in their microphones, just go and do it: open mics, charity events, whatever it is, just put yourself on the stage, and if people like you there, they’ll like you.”
performances, you will be tighter as a band. Also, when you come to writing your own songs, you will vibe with each other more efficiently and the writing process will be much more constructive.
Mark Knowles, owner, Bar 42 You need to work towards an original 30 minute set asap. It’s not until you do that that you realise if you’re any good. Literally I never turn down a Worthing band of any age.
Connor Cheetham, guitarist with High Tyde Just keep writing songs, everyday! Image, visuals and everything else is very important but you can’t get anywhere without a good song!

Jacob Aaron & The Reign My first top tip would be to get on top of organisation and time management. Dedicate time each week to meet with your band mates, for rehearsals and also just to build chemistry and friendship. The positive energy and chemistry will shine through in your
Whatever it is you do, you just need to upload an mp3 of your music to the BBC Introducing website, and it’s our job to send it on to the right people. You just need to be happy with where you are as an artist yourself. It has to be decent enough quality for us to play it on the radio, but you don’t need to spend a lot of money mixing and mastering to get heard.
Next issue we’ll get tips for rehearsing and recording, including where to go so as to not annoy the neighbours. n

Community arts company Creative Waves revealed their latest project, Heritage Lottery funded POP UP ON THE PROM. WORTHING ARTISTS OPEN HOUSES 2018
3 Summer Weekends of Art The organising team for this year’s Artists Open Houses are delighted to extend an invitation to the curious: visit any or all of the 57 venues on this year’s art trail, and find out what the artists in our town have been creating. THERE IS SOMETHING TO PLEASE EVERYONE – a huge variety of work on display in a wide variety of places. There is art to look at, art to buy, and art to long for. There will be surprise moments of live music, spoken word and even chance encounters. Not to mention cake. Worthing Artists Open Houses is a community arts event, which aims to provide the opportunity for visitors to meet artists, explore the town in a unique way, and make connections. It provides artists of all ages and experience to put their work on display and communicate with their audience. This year’s venues include the work of some very experienced fine artists. At the Fish
VIV MARTIN, ETCHING ON PAPER
Factory restaurant in Brighton Road you can see the drawing, painting and printmaking of Paul and Viv Martin. They have been Worthing residents for …. years, but lived and worked as artists in Brighton before that, and were part of the famous Fiveways group which established the Brighton Art Trail … years ago. Visitors will also be able to view art produced by very young creatives, starting with Reflections Nursery, and going on to the participating schools, St Andrew’s, Bohunt, Chatsmore, Our Lady of Sion, and then Worthing College.
Just starting out on their career, two young artists have contributed to the promotional material for the Open Houses event; Phoenix Grayson, a 2nd year illustration student at Northbrook MET won a competition to design the leaflet and poster; Bella Chalk, a 2nd year Art and Design student, also at Northbrook MET, designed the Discovery Trail map, an exciting interactive addition to this year’s event, free copies of which will be available from Colonnade House in Warwick Street. The Open Houses leaflets are in locations throughout the area, and direct to houses in some areas. n
Worthing Artists Open Houses runs over three weekends 16 /17 June, 24/25 June, and 30 June/1 July.

INTERVIEW
Rory Graham aka Rag’n’Bone Man #SCRATCHPAD, ‘WHAT’S NEXT?’ PHOTO: COLONNADE HOUSE - CREATIVE HUB
Rory Graham was born not that far away from here, up the road in Uckfield. His debut single ‘Human’, released in 2016 was followed by the album also titled ‘Human’ in 2017. THE SAME YEAR RORY WAS HONOURED with two Brit Awards for British Breakthrough Act and the Critics’ Choice Award and in 2018, Best Single.
With 46 concert tour dates booked for 2018/19 and a new baby, what was he doing in Worthing? That answer starts with his role as Patron with AudioActive, who are a Brighton based groundbreaking music organisation, working with young people. AudioActive’s approach is to work with young people as artists first, regardless of their starting point, to support them to become part of a wider scene. Rory, first got involved with AudioActive a few years ago and has supported the charity’s work through guest artist appearances in projects like #Scratchpad. Rory met with young artists at Colonnade House and more recently took part in a Q&A panel at St Paul’s to discuss What’s Next? for the Worthing music scene. It’s here that he took 5 minutes out to speak with Here & Now about his work as AudioActive Patron and his interest in Worthing. #Scratchpad is a partnership project between Adur & Worthing Trust, Audio Active, Northbrook Metropolitan College, As Described and Adur & Worthing Councils with generous funding from Arts Council England, Worthing Town Centre Initiative and Worthing Community Chest.
Why Worthing? As part of my role as Patron of AudioActive, I came over to Worthing to see what was going on with #Scratchpad and how it was helping nurture the next generation of talent coming through and to see what Worthing needed as a town. I’m trying to support AudioActive with the work that they do here.
You appear to have accelerated quickly to success. What advice would you give to young people trying to make it in the industry? It’s important to know that it doesn’t just happen, there’s no quick route to that point. From the outside world’s perspective it seems like you’ve very quickly taken this big leap but having spent about 10 years getting to this point, I’d say there’s nothing to make you shoot through that, you have to have perseverance and realise it doesn’t happen overnight.
Would you also say that it’s about stepping out of the bedroom? For sure. Although we do live in that social media world, equally important is life, and before you go into the industry to prepare yourself. Get on stage and play whether it’s for no money, and do as much as you can because you don’t want to suddenly be thrust onto a stage when you’ve never played before.
You’re using your success to support young people here. Any other key message you’d share through Here & Now? Look to AudioActive for help, they can give you great advice on where to go and what you need, whether it’s studio access or help with writing, help with playing instruments, whatever it is, that’s what AudioActive want to achieve too.
I walked in to my record deal at 29 years old. Most people sign their record deals at 18 or 21, I just took a little bit longer. I think it’s just important that if you feel like you’re good enough to just carry on, have perseverance.
We can’t miss the opportunity to ask you one of our ‘50 Sides of Worthing’ questions… If you had an opportunity to rave with someone on Worthing beach, who would it be?
How important is it to connect with the right people?
I never went to the FatBoy Slim events on Brighton beach, so maybe FatBoy Slim on Worthing beach, that’d be quite good! n
We kind of live in a social media world now, whether you like it or not you have to embrace it and it’s a big part of how artists get seen nowadays, and it’s important to have a presence online.
Interview by Frances at St Paul’s, 21 March 2018
It’s also about having an understanding of how the industry is these days, and how it works.
See more info on the #Scratchpad project on p 5-7 of this issue, on hereandnowmag.co.uk and for full info go to audioactive.org.uk

GUILD CARE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
85 Years Making a Difference in the Local Community It was back in April 1933 that a small team of dedicated volunteers started the Worthing Council of Social Service, now known as Guild Care. EFFIE METHOLD, FRANK CAVE, ARTHUR LINFIELD, THE REVEREND E. ARTHUR HAVILAND and many others joined together in order to create a kinder, more caring society and since then thousands of people from Worthing and the local area have been able to enjoy a better life. From those very small beginnings over eight decades ago, Guild Care, now one of the largest employers in Worthing, with the help of over 600 staff and amazing support from over 250 volunteers is able to help over 3,000 people every year.
14
| May 2018 | HERE & NOW
Guild Care runs three care homes, specialising in dementia, nursing and residential care, as well as providing over 30 community services for people aged from 5 to 105. It also has nine charity shops around the town which raise vital funds to enable their services to continue to run.
YOUR CHANCE TO JOIN THE GUILD CARE TEAM! AS GUILD CARE LOOKS TO CELEBRATE ITS 85TH YEAR it has launched a new and exciting recruitment campaign to attract more people to work in its care homes in Worthing Debbie Dollner, Chief Operating Officer, explains why she believes joining the care sector now is a great opportunity for someone who’s never considered it before. She said: “Just look at the high street, major retailers are really struggling with so many announcements that shops are closing down. If you want a career that really makes a difference to people’s
lives, and makes you feel good about coming to work, come and work in care, there will always be a job for you and it’s a really rewarding career.” Chief Executive, Suzanne Millard added: “This is an exciting time for Guild Care as we are looking to expand and recruit more people to our wonderful local charity. As an organisation, we have always adapted and responded to the many changing needs of the people of Worthing – that is what has helped us to survive for 85 years which is a major achievement. “We now want Guild care to be the local ‘employer of choice’ for staff who want to work in social care. We believe that this ambition is essential if we are to achieve ‘outstanding’ services that provide the highest quality of care.” If you would like to find out more about working for Guild Care please call their recruitment team on 01903 863154 or email recruitment@guildcare.org n
FASCINATING ADUR
The River Adur PHOTO: JOHN HOUSE

FASCINATING FACTS What does a circus, smuggling and a 15,000-line poem have to do with the River Adur? 1.
THERE SEEMS TO BE NO CLEAR REASON as to how the River Adur got its name. One suggestion is that the River Adur has procured its name from the Celtic word, ‘Dwyr’, meaning ‘water’. It has also been suggested that the name derives from 17th Century poet, Michael Drayton’s 15,000-line poem, Poly-Olbion. This poetic and rather fantastical journey through England and Wales suggests that the River Adur was named so because of a Roman Fort, Portus Adurni.
2.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR SMUGGLING along the West Sussex coast were plentiful in the 19th Century. In 1855 a circus and wildbeast show visited Shoreham. Complimentary tickets were given to the most important townsmen and to those on the lookout for smugglers. With most of the townsfolk being entertained, few people noticed a suspicious looking ship on the town quay. Within a matter of moments, the ship was loaded with tobacco and began its journey up the River Adur towards Beeding. Little of the cargo was ever found and all the coast guards replaced.
3.
THE OLD SHOREHAM TOLL BRIDGE was opened in 1782. Prior to this people and animals were pulled across the river on a flat raft.
4.
IN THE 19TH CENTURY, smugglers
had their favourite areas for beaching vessels and offloading cargo. What was then the mouth of the River Adur was Copperas Gap, now known as Portslade.

Quite honestly, it’s only the limited wordcount that is preventing me from penning you an unabridged guidebook. In its humble, unpretentious appearance, you would be forgiven for not seeing it. But take a good look; spare the time, and you will uncover a wealth of lesser-known places, offering superior service, competitive prices and far more heart than their gaudy chain counterparts. So, allow me to cast you off on a journey, though if you have read this far, the chances are you’re already making your own way there.

HEALTH & WELLBEING
10 Keys to Happier Living We are all social beings and need to feel connected to others. STUDIES SHOW THAT A LACK OF SOCIAL SUPPORT is as bad for us as smoking, whereas a strong social network increases our immunity to infection and reduces mental decline as we get older. Close, supportive relationships are the most important to our well-being, but we often take our nearest and dearest for granted. Talking and asking about the good things that happen to us can quickly improve the quality of our
THE POWER OF THE CHOIR
There is a growing body of evidence demonstrating that group singing is good for physical and mental wellbeing.
KEY TO THESE FEELINGS OF WELLBEING are the chemicals our bodies secrete when we sing. The initial experience of singing might be a feeling of stress which triggers the release of cortisol -ALI theNANCARROW Stress Hormone. PHOTO:
Broader social networks give us a sense of belonging, and in Worthing we are lucky to have a vibrant and diverse local community. To connect with like-minded people, check out the listings in Here & Now or at hereandnowmag. co.uk, or pop in and see what delights your local Community Centre has to offer. n

But then when we sing it’s like having a massive clear out! The action of singing releases us from cortisol’s grip and other feel good factors come into play. Feel good hormones are released. Oxytocin helps us to relax and bond with others. Dopamine improves mood and motivation. Endorphins help us feel pleasure and satisfaction. In fact a regular sing up really gives your mood a natural lift! But forget Science for a minute, in Sussex the joy of group singing is really demonstrated by the exponential increase in local choirs from Spring into Soul (Worthing), Rowlands Singers (Worthing), BrightSoul (Hove), Rock Choir (South coast) and The Chichester Singers. Take your pick, these days they come in all shapes and sizes and there is something for everyone. Worthing has its very own choral celebration coming up. 3 Choirs, organised by Amanda Mitchell (Let’s Sing Soul) and Anthony
Dickinson from St Paul’s, brings three community choirs together to showcase their work. Guest director, the charismatic Mark De-Lisser, is one of the UK’s most sought-after choral directors and vocal coaches. This is the second year for this event; Last year the joy of bringing 60 people together to sing in a shared space was palpable and infectious. Friendships were made; we learnt and felt fantastic together. n

THOMAS H GREEN - MUSICAL TIME MACHINE
The Worthing Wurlitzer THE ‘80S AND ‘90S WERE GLORY YEARS FOR THE WORTHING WURLITZER, CONSISTENTLY SELLING OUT 1000-CAPACITY CONCERTS.
Spring 2018, Sunday afternoon, Worthing Assembly Hall. About 200 are gathered. To applause, a magnificent Wurlitzer organ rises from the stage, the gaudy sound of ‘I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside’ rings out. The man playing is Phil Kelsall, principal organist at Blackpool’s Tower Ballroom for over 40 years.
IN A CONCERT OF TWO PARTS, he entertains all afternoon, a ball of energy at the instrument’s distinctive horseshoeshaped console. Playing the Wurlitzer requires stamina and Kelsall is almost dancing as, bathed in pink light, his arms leap hither and thither, his body jumping around as he attacks the pedals at his feet.

| May 2018 | HERE & NOW
1991 to Present The sounds he creates can be strident but are also sonically varied, full of entertaining twists and turns. It’s what used to be called ‘light music’ but seems also part fairground, part music hall, even part naughty postcard as a swanee whistle is never far away. And yet, as well as stomping jollity such as the ‘Drunken Sailor’ sea shanty and ‘Chim Chim Cher-ee’ from ‘Mary Poppins’, he also assays a delicious vibraphone-like version of the gallery theme from ‘60s/’70s children’s TV show ‘Vision On’ and a sturdy take on Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’. It’s a uniquely British experience, run through with nostalgia, but Worthing is one of only a few towns left where a theatre organ maintains such an active presence. “In the 1920s cinema organs accompanied silent films but by the 1930s they were used to play the audience in and out and in the ice cream break,” explains Simon Field, chairman of the Sussex Theatre Organ Trust and owner of the Worthing Wurlitzer. “In those days the organists themselves were real stars – most of whose forenames were Reginald, for some reason – Reginald Dixon, Reginald New, the famous Reginald Foort who had a touring organ carried around in five big lorries that he’d set up and play. Coming out from your cold home into luxurious warm to see an exotic film was a big evening out and the organ was part of that escapism.” Worthing had just such a cinema with a Compton organ in its massive Odeon on Liverpool Road but this was sadly demolished in 1987 (despite being a Grade

II Listed building). That Worthing has a Wurlitzer at all, then, is mostly down to one man, Jim Buckland, now in his late nineties. In 1975 he was at the heart of a group of enthusiasts who set about bringing a theatre organ to the town. It was to prove a daunting task. They rescued a dilapidated organ from Buckingham’s derelict town hall. The instrument had itself been rescued from Stepney’s defunct Troxy cinema. Buckland and his devoted team, supported by Worthing Borough Council, spent 36,000 man hours on the restoration, at a cost of £137,000. The grand launch was on 24th May 1981 and playing the opening set was Bobby Pagan, who had also played when the organ originally opened in Stepney in 1933. The ‘80s and ‘90s were glory years for the Worthing Wurlitzer, consistently selling out 1000-capacity concerts. American organ stars Lyn Larsen, Carlo Curley and Hector Olivera all appeared, for the US has a particularly strong theatre organ culture (indeed Buckland’s original aim was to

emulate the sound of the Wurlitzer in the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, California). Homegrown talents such as Simon Gledhill, Richard Hills, and Nigel Ogden also performed, and the Wurlitzer accompanied the Worthing Symphony Orchestra, a collaboration that continues to the present. A piece was especially written for this pairing by Hollywood composer Rex Koury (who
wrote the theme to the radio/TV show ‘Gunsmoke’). Buckland wasn’t yet completely satisfied with the sound. In the mid-‘90s, an organ became available that could be used to extend and update Worthing’s. This was the BBC Theatre organ from Manchester’s Playhouse, which had previously been in Blackpool’s Empire Ballroom. The renovations took two years to complete and the revitalized Wurlitzer was finally presented in concert on 23rd February 1997, now one of Europe’s largest and most complete. A final round of “tonal finishing” was completed in 2001, overseen by Lyn Larsen and two top US Wurlitzer technicians.

“To sound really good organs need to be tuned to the building,” says Simon Field, “Certain ranks of pipes need to be made louder, some softer, same with individual notes. That process often didn’t happen with many English cinema installations but this one has been tonally finished by two experts so it’s very Americansounding, brighter and slightly louder than the average English cinema organ.”
Four years ago Field took over from Jim Buckland, purchasing the organ and overseeing it. The income to pay for its upkeep comes from concerts but audiences have dwindled somewhat in the 21st century. The generations who recall Wurlitzers in cinemas is passing and no-one is replacing them. “There are only about five or six organs in the country on the same scale as Worthing’s,” says Field, with justifiable pride, “Very few are regularly played, although the one in the Odeon Leicester Square is still used to play audiences in. Overall, not enough people are coming now. It tallies with the fact people don’t listen to light music, the sort composed by Leroy Anderson in the ‘40s and ‘50s, that used to be on BBC Radio 2 before they started playing pop from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Such music is deeply unfashionable at the moment, and I think it’ll be a good few years before it’s rediscovered. When it is, that’s when the theatre organ will re-emerge with it.” In the meantime, Field is forward-looking. The Wurlitzer is successfully played at Worthing Beer Festival each October, was recently used in an “immersive musical”, was the highlight of TotRockinBeats’ childfriendly NYE party, and there are plans to show an accompanied silent film classic in the autumn, as well as for a revival of organled dancing. The Wurlitzer concert programme has now paused until the autumn but keep your eyes open. The Worthing Wurlitzer is an institution. It’s something this town has over almost any other in the UK. Whether you’re a fan of the music or not, it’s a treasure and we should ensure it has a vibrant future. n Simon Field, owner of the Worthing Wurlitzer, can be contacted at contact@ worthing-wurlitzer.org

A LONG BLUE SKIRT
Davison C of E High School for Girls A long blue skirt, a high ponytail, and an upwards inflection - you’ve just had a chance encounter with a Davison girl (and lived to tell the tale). THESE DAVISON GIRLS WERE ORIGINALLY DAVISON BOYS! In 1812 Reverend William Davison decided to create a free school for poor boys making Davison C of E high school the oldest free school in Worthing. After going through a sex change the school began to teach “good sound advice on preparing a girl for homemaking” and all the skills a girl would need from laundry to cleaning (according to Evelyn Farrant who attended in the 1920s). These days you’d hope Davison would have evolved somewhat, and it has, teaching academic subjects as well as the all-boys school its twinned with. Davison is well known in the community for the dancing extravaganza put on every year known as interform dance wherein girls of every colour (the school’s houses) get to dance live on stage at the Pavilion theatre in front of a huge crowd. It sounds terrifying (and is) but it’s a wonderful opportunity and I choose to take part in it every year. If you’re thinking that Davison is a heap of hormonal teenage girls, then you wouldn’t be wrong. However, the odd cat fight and constant mill of gossip is all part of the wonderful experience and everyone I’ve known at Davison has been friendly and supportive, and just bursting with juicy information about Stacey’s sister’s boyfriend’s mate Joe (OMG how could he). Of course, Davison is not the only high school in the community and there are many other equally good high schools, however my experiences are solely of Davison, so I couldn’t exactly tell you anything about the others. In conclusion the height of someone’s character is not determined by the length of their skirt, the thickness of their eyebrow or the height of their ponytail and, I’m proud to say that ‘once a Davison girl always a Davison girl’ *cue emotional music* n

An Explosion of the Senses Imagine having the power to control time. Imagine pausing time, during an explosion. What would PHOTO BY ERIC RICHMOND, DESIGN BY LONGARM
that moment look like? THAT IS EXACTLY THE PREMISE of Mimbre’s visually stunning new show The Exploded Circus. An explosion has been caught, frozen in time, with the remnants of the circus ring left hanging in the air – suspended above the ground in a fleeting vulnerable moment. It is this world that six circus performers fill with acrobatics, aerial work and juggling to weave a physical, highly visual and audible story told without words. It is a story of finding your own order in chaos, creating a new normal and rebuilding society piece by piece. JOE BUNN’S BARDIC TRIALS

FLIM-FLAM SLAMWICH
Local elections are happening this month, and as usual I have a ridiculous, albeit a politicial suggestion for you. HAVE YOU HEARD OF A POETRY SLAM BEFORE? Essentially, it’s an interesting gimmick to get people to pay attention to what could be mindnumbingly boring performance poetry. It’s a judged poetry contest. There are some rules that the contestants must adhere to: 1) All poems must be 3 minutes long. No longer, or they are penalised. 2) No props. 3) No singing or music. After this, the poem is judged by 5 members of the audience. The top and bottom scores are lopped off, to prevent favouritism. My suggestion is this: - We invent Slam Politics. - We apply the rules of a poetry slam to the world of politics. At a hustings, each candidate would only be allowed to speak for up to three minutes for the entire evening. Any longer, and they lose votes. This shows they can play by the rules, and that they can keep a promise. No inspiring music, or campaign songs that are ruined by the end of the election run up. No props, ie no buses painted with lies about NHS money. Finally, 5 members of the audience (of 5 different political persuasions) would be chosen to score the policies. Top and bottom scores lopped off. This would only be a guide to help the public’s voting decisions, much like the judge’s comments on the X Factor. There are advantages to this way of playing things. The first is an obvious one, that the many thousands of people in this country who don’t vote could be convinced to at least engage with the whole process with the whole 3 minute gimmick. It’s quick and painless, no strung out arguments. The scoring would help people open their minds to the policies of different parties (people would be encourage, a la slam poetry, to vocalise their disagreements with the scoring). And best of all, no buses with outright lies about money going to the NHS, when it clearly isn’t. Let’s do it, Slam Politics. n

THE WORTHING BYPASS
This column will not change your life but it may put you to sleep Life is chaos and confusion. I don’t know who said that but it ought to be someone profound like Oscar Wilde or Ghandi. Certainly not Anne Widdecombe or Giles Brandreth (aka the Woolly Jumper Guy). I suspect Albert Einstein said something similar, or it may have been Stephen Hawking.
IT’S A GREAT SAYING THAT I RATHER SUSPECT I made up myself, but for fear of grave plagiarism best credit all the big brains and worthies on the rent-a-quote list. Let’s add Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu to cover the spiritual domain and whilst we’re at it doff our hats to Richard Attenborough – you can’t go wrong with him (as it happens this will probably serve well for search hits when the Bypass appears online). I should revise our shared classic quotation by adding a qualifier. Life appears as chaos and
38
| May 2018 | HERE & NOW
confusion, at least on the surface, but is in fact much more chilled out the less you think about it. Oscar Wilde’s just jumped ship on claiming kudos for that one and even the Dalai Lama would be grumbling at the clumsiness of the naff saying (do Buddhists vent? Thought for the day that one; you can even have that as a meme, kids). Only Woolly Jumper Guy would stick around to claim credit for that, if it were not for the fact that he has made a career out of surface-level flippancy. I do like a saying though. That one came about through the step-daughter hooking me up to Netflix as I sat bewildered at her technoknow-how with the awe and wonder of a small child witnessing a rocket launch from mission control. It was then that yours truly hit upon a philosophical tract that is pretty much stolen from John Donne, the metaphysical poet sat on an island whilst his mates went out on the razz. “Without the kindness of technically-gifted family and friends I’d be sat on my own in my pants listening to wireless radio,” I mused. Naturally the compliment didn’t sit for long before turning rancid. “The company would be great but I’d miss out on Game of Thrones and that’s a bridge too far.” That got me thinking about the kindness of strangers, the unfathomable complexity of life without a support network to nurse us along our way. I envisioned my future self staggering down the street, hospital issue gown flailing open, buttocks billowing in the wind, as my carer scurries behind shooing the mocking seagulls from the trail of breadcrumbs falling from my unkempt knee-length beard. The Beloved Hackette watches disinterested from the conservatory (a dystopian future, I’ll grant you, where I have succumbed to an extension that serves no other purpose than as an observatory for the downfall of me) whilst finishing her Sudoku and tut-tutting at Giles Brandreth’s
LIFE IS INDEED CHAOS AND CONFUSION AND WITHOUT A SUPPORT MECHANISM IS VIRTUALLY UNNAVIGABLE, A BIT LIKE THE WORTHING BYPASS...
announcement that he would turn himself inside out for charity.
There goes the chaos and confusion. Life for me though is more about the internal long-lost timeless tea time of the soul, where marathon bathing is mandatory and philosophising about mundanity is nirvana. ‘Never let the nuggets go’ is my favourite saying that I’ve just invented. Take the Beloved Hackette’s blithe comment on the way back from delicious nibbles at the Andalucía restaurant as we dodged the dogged puddles in our path. “It’s like the Somme out here,” she said wistfully. “Really?” I enquired, unsure if I’d heard correctly. “The Somme? The actual Somme? The Battle of the Somme? The unimaginable hell of mud and decay and death? The slaughter of hundreds of thousands of young men? It’s like that is it? A few puddles?” Even she laughed at that one. What I have come to gather, Dear Hackolyte, is that life is indeed chaos and confusion and without a support mechanism is virtually unnavigable, a bit like the Worthing bypass. Our collective headlong rush towards technological salvation has only opened a wormhole into infinite chaos and confusion, headlined for the time being by a Twitter garbling Neanderthal President. On the other hand there is peace. If you pour yourself a lovely bubble bath, the one thing you’d never think about before immersing yourself and your favourite duck is Trumpton, so chaos cedes to none-thought, the natural filter for higher perception. Or sleep, as it’s more commonly known. Careful though, you might drown. n

Finance Corner Have I got the best mortgage? I’ve moved to my Lenders Standard Variable rate and my payments haven’t gone up much - is it worth reviewing?
there is normally little you can do without incurring a penalty in which case it’s normally worth staying where you are, although this will depend on what rate you are on today. If you are not tied into your mortgage deal or it’s ending soon you can secure a new scheme 6 months before yours is due for renewal. Fixed rates are available for 2, 3, 5 and 10 year terms which will provide a stable payment for that period which gives security and peace of mind. Ask your adviser to check if it’s worth changing scheme.
My current Lender has offered me a deal, should I take it?
Your bank only provides their own products and some mortgage brokers’ work off a reduced lender panel, some with as little as approximately 30 lenders to choose from. A truly independent mortgage adviser will have access to around 120 lenders and should be able to find a lender that can help, or provide guidance on actions to make this possible in the future.
Even if you think you are still on a good deal the Lenders variable rate is normally the worst rate available so even if you think it’s cheap you could still save money. Remember your money is better off in your pocket than the Lenders. Leading interest rates are still at incredibly low levels and by securing a market leading deal you could reduce your monthly outgoings, or if you wish, keep them the same and pay your mortgage off faster.
