TURNS OUT WORTHING IS BEING SEEN in a more positive light these days. Earlier this year, The Metro ran a piece ‘7 reasons why Worthing is a better place to live than London’, which encouraged readers to “Imagine getting home from work, grabbing your surf board and heading into the sea for a paddle… and taking a sundowner in one of the beach bars.”

REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL
One, Two, Three... We asked you for your ‘Reasons to be cheerful, living in Worthing’.
Alex Pontet summed it up nicely for many, “Worthing is upand-coming and yet it retains its quiet, understated seaside town charm; you can have a good night out at a flash bar or traditional pub, but equally spend your time relaxing on the beach or a park, without the extreme hustle and bustle of Brighton. “New restaurants, bars and other examples of rejuvenation can be seen, making the future of Worthing something to look forward to – Brighton, by contrast, while still exciting, is now sort of stilted (where else can it go?); but Worthing is still evolving, going through an almost resurgence. “The beach is NOT like Brighton, and for me that’s the draw; it’s the contrast to Brighton makes it highly appealing, rather than the usual ‘there’s a beach’ - it’s a better beach!”
Reasons to be cheerful, living in Worthing to be continued... tell us yours! Email your thoughts, favourite things, art and photos to editorial@hereandnowmag. co.uk or be part of the conversation on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter.
1 The Social Vibe “I think Worthing is a really exciting community to be a part of at the moment. There seems to be a much greater investment into the social side of things in recent years - like the food festival, the fireworks event and the Christmas markets and ice skating, which we’re looking forward to seeing return shortly.” Katie Austin

COMMUNITY UPDATE
Pick Your Potatoes PARK POWERWALK
NOVEMBER IS HERE and we are all getting ready for a cosy Winter in front of the fire with hot chocolate and marshmallows. Before you head in to permanent hibernation though, spend a bit of time enjoying some of the excellent community activities that make Worthing such a great place to live. Your hot chocolate will taste all the better for it!
•
Shake out the Autumn cobwebs with a stroll along the prom or a powerwalk round your local park. If you have the time and want to keep our communal spaces in tiptop shape, join GoodGym goodgym. org/areas/worthing or go it alone - the Council provide litter picking equipment free of charge. Email help.aws@adur-worthing.gov. uk

If you would like an allotment, you can apply for a plot near you via this link adur-worthing.gov.uk/ parks/allotments/ Or what about a community garden? Less work than looking after an allotment on your own, but all the benefits of seeing a garden come to life and growing your own adur-worthing. gov.uk/community-greenspaces. Take a look at Transition Town Worthing ttworthing.org for more opportunities.

STAY SAFE Bonfire Night is also the perfect opportunity to get together with friends and neighbours to eat a jacket potato and light a sparkler. COMMUNITY CHEST Community Chest: Recycle your old clothes to support Worthing Groups. You may know that your old clothes can be resold at charity shops but did you know that your clothes and shoes that are beyond saving can be recycled using the Worthing Community Chest bins, and that all funds support local non-profit groups? Last year Worthing Community Chest raised over £14,000 just from the textile recycling bins. This helped us to award grants to groups including The Rowland Singers, Blueprint22 and Flipitas Gymnastics Club.
in 2018 could we support your group? We have four rounds of funding every year with our next round closing at the end of January. Are you starting up a new group or does your group need funds to grow, a grant from Worthing Community Chest can be up to £1,500. For more info visit worthingcommunitychest.org or call 01903 221080.

MY COMMUNITY MATTERS
Take Deep Breaths & Count to 10 ...BECAUSE THE FESTIVE SEASON is upon us and apparently this is the peak period for some of us to experience anger according to The British Association of Anger Management.
Interestingly, they don’t appear to run events in the South East. Does this mean we are more relaxed and happy down south, with glorious beaches and lots of community stuff happening?
Between 1-7 December, Anger Awareness Week highlights key triggers and suggests ways we can cope better with a downloadable ‘Keep Your Cool over Yule’ kit for individuals, organisations, families, schools and other groups. You can even take a free stress test: angermanage.co.uk
Many of you, I know, volunteer to help our local voluntary sector organisations and give your time to support local causes. There really is no better way to de-stress than by spending time with others who are giving. Sadly, some of our local voluntary sector members, running charities and local community
organisations, share with us that they often feel stressed about the level of responsibility they have for so many beneficiaries who need their support or who are struggling to cope. Could you give them a helping hand or share your skills in 2018? Christmas can be that perfect time for all of us to think about giving and sharing. So, maybe your New Year’s resolution will include helping Worthing to thrive – just that little bit more - by volunteering? You could help your employers demonstrate their Corporate Social Responsibility
Getting to Know You FERRING COUNTRY CENTRE is
a local independent charity providing a day service which offers meaningful training and work experience for people with learning disabilities. At the centre, they can develop work and social skills by assisting with
operating the Riding Therapy Unit, Garden Centre, Café, Animal Farm and Charity Shop. The Centre enables customers to work in a safe, supervised and supportive environment. They are able to build on their selfesteem and confidence whilst learning and being given opportunities that some of us take for granted. They are empowered to make choices, sometimes for the first time in their lives. The work ethos applied at the Centre helps customers to move on to work in the community, voluntary and sometimes paid employment. The Centre is a small agricultural holding set in beautiful countryside in Rife Way, Ferring. Open to the general public seven days a week, it provides a unique, tranquil and calming space. People can meet the horses and other animals on the farm, walk the nature trial,
visit the Farm and Garden Centre, or enjoy our refreshments. Volunteering is an important part of Ferring Country Centre with volunteers sharing their skills, including helping to promote the Centre and raising funds. Support is always needed and gratefully received. Volunteering isn’t just about ‘doing good’. It’s a great opportunity for people: to get more involved with their local community, have fun, make new friends from all walks of life, develop through new experiences and challenges, use their existing skills, or learn new ones that may benefit their working or personal life and gain satisfaction from helping others. We regularly have local, regional and national companies volunteering at the Centre. These company days are great for team building and company morale. For more info visit ferringcountrycentre.org and download an application form if you want to apply to be a volunteer.

RESTAURANT REVIEW
The Dining Room CONFESSIONS OF A LARDER LOUT FULL CONFESSION. I MOVED TO WORTHING 16 MONTHS AGO. From Hove. And before that, London. I know, I know, but here’s the thing; we REALLY love living here. Everyone is fantastic. I’ve learnt that local businesses are committed to working together to polish Worthing’s reputation, and there are plenty of them doing it. I heard about Not So Secret Suppers’ pop-up dining experience (I’m Twitterobsessed, I can’t help it), and was delighted that the talent behind NSSS’ - Jean De Rien, Worthing’s singing chef, and Rosanne Nulty - had added The Dining Room to their stable of culinary offerings. So, last weekend, we stuck our heads round the door of 14, Crescent Road to meet Jean, who cheerily accommodated our (very, ahem) early table request. Menus are changed regularly and locally sourced. This particular small plates menu was so tempting. Having been cajoled away from scallops and persuaded into mackerel caponata (as fabulous as it sounds), we settled on five additional plates. The front of house service was welcoming and smooth. We were dining pre-theatre so our plates came out as they were ready, we never felt rushed and there was no compromise on quality. We started with rich and creamy truffled mac’ n’ cheese, with its
clever bacon rose on the side. Our vegetarian plate was sweet potato tartlet which was moist and delicate with a surprising salsa kick. The pork tenderloin medallions were flavoursome, with the lemon thyme coming through gently, and we all felt the lamb strips were outstanding; perfectly tender and more-ish. Our patatas fritas were just the right amount of crispy outside, fluffy inside, and the peas a la francaise were an immediate favourite. It’s easy not to do simple dishes well, but these were just as they should be. We finished with balsamic strawberries which were sweet-tangy heaven. I’ve never had buttermilk ice-cream before, it’s distinct creamy flavour combined beautifully with the delicate sorbet.

31a MARINE PARADE ON WORTHING SEAFRONT BN11 3PU Jean and Rosanne aim to deliver an amazing, fine dining experience and that’s exactly what we got. They also offer incredible value: our bill for three 17/10/2017 diners came to just under £60 for Cow 6 Shed advert qtr.indd 1 small plates, 2 sides, and a bottle of wine. Jean and Rosanne have great ambitions for The Dining Room, and they want to see Worthing firmly placed on the culinary map. With such fine talent in evidence, I am convinced this will happen. Just one more thing, Jean didn’t sing. It’s no biggie, just saying.

Aubergine and Red Lentil Curry THE HAIRLESS BIKER This aubergine and red lentil curry makes a warming and spicy vegetarian dish. I tend to put a few spoonfuls of this into a separate saucepan (then blend, so the kids don’t see what is in it and they get some of their 5-a-day!) and add curry fried chicken breasts, for the little meat eaters of our household. INGREDIENTS Spray oil 2 aubergines, cut into 2.5 cm chunks 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 onion, chopped 2 tbsp your favourite medium curry powder 600 ml hot vegetable stock 175 g red lentils 1 green pepper, chopped 1 carrot pepper, chopped 100 g spinach leaves 1 Cauliflower, chopped into steaks 1 tbsp your favourite medium curry powder
METHOD Heat spray oil in a large pan and fry the onion, garlic and aubergine until golden. Add curry powder and stir-fry for a further 5 minutes to warm through. Add stock, pepper, carrots and lentils to the pan. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat to a low simmer, half cover with a lid and simmer for 30 minutes, until the lentils are tender. If the lentils are not tender and mushy, boil the curry vigorously for 5 minutes. At the end of cooking, cover with spinach and stir through until the spinach starts to wilt. Meanwhile. Heat oven to 200°C. Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Place cauliflower steaks on the prepared baking tray. Spray with oil and sprinkle a generous portion of medium curry powder over the cauliflower. Roast cauliflower steaks in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Serve.

DADIFESTO
Don’t Talk to Strangers WELL, YOU CAN IF YOU REALLY WANT TO. Most of my Saturday mornings recently have been spent flyering the streets for the next couple of TotRockinBeats events. As a result, I can often be found wandering around the parks and cinemas, talking to strangers, especially if they are friendly families, who have toddlers in tow. What has surprised me is the huge number of people that I’ve met recently who were not living in the area, this time last year. While I was talking to one young family last week, I spent about 15 mins distilling the benefits of why they should quit London asap and move down here. It’s got to the point where people actually suggested that I should be paid by Worthing Tourist Office because my enthusiasm for Worthing was so tangible. (If you are reading this W.T.O, I will work for beer).
…had I been head down, looking at my phone or ignoring them, they wouldn’t have had such an impact on my life… We all know this lovely town of ours is on the turn, the signs are all around us. Local mum of two and political type, Beccy ‘The Asteroid’ Cooper, nipping into the excellent Baked in Rowlands Road for a cuppa with Jezza Corbyn. New restaurants and small businesses are springing up around us, houses sell within days. But for me, the overriding thing that’s great about this place is the people and how lovely they are.
Worthing seems to be top-heavy with people with smiley faces and the urge to want to help. (Of course, there are some types who aren’t quite as friendly - anyone that has been at the taxi rank opposite Subway on a Saturday night, will have seen them in their natural habitat). Some of you might remember that, back in the 70s, ‘Charlie’ said we shouldn’t talk to strangers, but now I’m a grown-up and I don’t have the urge to go to with them for sweeties or to see their puppies, I just love chatting to new people and as a result, some great things have happened. There was: - The next door neighbour who welcomed us into her heart and her home, from the very first moment I knocked on her door and introduced myself three years ago. - There’s the fella I met by chance at St Paul’s directly leading to my wife getting the job she had always wanted in fostering. Two years later, she is still there and thriving. - The 97-year-old lady, Vera Charmers (pictured top right), who I met last year, also at St Paul’s, who ended up DJ’ing at the TotRockinBeats N.Y.E party.
say hello to the person beside you. Yes, they might think you are weird and rapidly rush away... But it’s much more likely in this wonderful town of ours that they’ll just smile and start a conversation
that connects you with something quite wonderful..

- Then there was the lady called Frances, who told me about this great magazine she was launching called ‘Here & Now’. Twelve months later she is still letting me write this stuff. All of these people were strangers; had I been head down, looking at my phone or ignored them, they wouldn’t have had such an impact on my life. So next time you are at the bus stop, share your chips with the person next to you. When you’re at the park or down the beach, make an effort to

Finance Corner THERE IS A LOT IN THE NEWS about interest rates going up, what impact will this have and what can I do about it?
MATT SUTTON, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF EMERALD FINANCE, your local award winning financial advisers, is here to answers your financial questions. Got a query? Email on info@emeraldfinance.co.uk

Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of England has suggested that interest rates will go up this year and the general consensus certainly seems to be steering that way. Inflation is increasing as the cost of living has risen due to a weaker pound following the Brexit vote. In basic terms this means we have less money left after paying for basic necessities such as food, fuel etc. which are now more expensive as the pound is weaker. It is a delicate balance and whether a rate rise will come or not is debatable. If it does it is likely to be in small rises of 0.25% to 0.5% at a time.
This impacts everyone in different ways. It’s good if you have savings as you are likely to get a better return on your money. For businesses any rise in their costs are likely to be passed onto the consumer which again would affect the general public negatively as the cost of goods and services may rise further. Where it hits most is for those with debts. If you have a mortgage the impact could be significant. As an example if you owe £200,000 on a repayment mortgage over 20 years, a 0.25% interest rate increase would raise monthly payments by approx. £23.85 per month and a 1% increase would increase monthly payments by approx. £97.43 per month. This would equate to between £286 and £1,169 extra in mortgage payments per year.
What can you do? Mortgage interest rates are still incredibly low so it would be prudent to see if you can make any savings on your current monthly mortgage payment. Look to secure a medium to longer term fixed rate to take you past Brexit and lock in the savings today to protect you and your family against any future volatility in the economy and financial marketplace. Everyone’s situation is different so make sure you speak to your independent financial adviser or contact Emerald Finance for a nonobligation review to make sure you are taking the best steps for your future. SPORT
This Girl Does JAS CLARKE, FORMER WORTHING RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB LADIES TEAM, tells Here & Now what inspired her to play rugby and why she still loves the sport. From the moment, I watched Jonny Wilkinson kick the winning drop goal of the Rugby World Cup final in 2003, as a besotted little girl revelling in the pure elation of that winning moment, I knew I had to play rugby. I began playing for Worthing Girls aged 12. I loved the evasive, attacking side of the game, found the contact side a great outlet for teenage rage, and met some of my greatest friends. Playing for Sussex also became a regular seasonal occurrence, with roles as vice-captain and captain.
After a previous failed trial, I made it into the U18 London and South East England divisional programme as a
fly half in 2013, aged 16. However, I did not enjoy the rugby; I found the environment to be very ‘every woman for herself’. Lacking confidence around louder, feistier people, I struggled to stay invested in the training and my development. Then, returning to a somewhat tumultuous and biased county set-up, I found I was being overlooked and played completely out of position, at flanker. As a result, I felt de-motivated to try and progress through the levels of women’s rugby. I settled playing in, and enjoying, the lower levels of the sport. At Christ’s Hospital boarding school, I had an amazing coach in Andy Turner, and found myself playing with, and later captaining, unexperienced, yet
very promising girls, who I loved to help with my experience. This will always remain one of my favourite
experiences of rugby. My dad believes I played my best game ever for CH, and I know it was because I played for every girl on that team and for our coaches; I adored them and wanted to win with and for them. In 2015, I started studying at the University of Birmingham. Our coach, Scottish international Tracy Balmer, was key to my progression, breaking down the technical side of the game and radiating knowledge. That year we won our BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) league and the BUCS Trophy. Last year, under a new coaching setup and with many new faces, we won the double again, were undefeated, and were promoted to BUCS Premier North. Going into my final year, with the role of team captain, I decided to experience the next level up, and develop my knowledge of the game, so I went to Worcester Valkyries training. A couple of weeks later I found myself making my Premier 15s debut, followed up by two starts at scrum half and a reversal in my opinion of the top levels of rugby. I have loved the experience so far; the professionalism that entails, and playing with some of the best in the country. Rugby is an integral part of my life;
I love the sport and the culture. Most of all I love the people. Not just the unparalleled fans, but the players and coaches I have met along the way, many of whom I know I have friends for life in. It doesn’t matter who you are or what your background is, everyone is in it together. At university, we rugby girls are inseparable, and always up for a sesh! Again, some of my best friends are in that team. Rugby has also provided a platform for me to develop as a person. It has given me confidence, an outlet, and developed invaluable skills such as teamwork. I would advise anyone to start and continue playing, whatever your aspirations are. If you want to play for England, you can; just persevere and have the desire to improve. If you don’t want to, know you can still benefit greatly from the sport. Along the way you’ll meet some of the most amazing people and make the most amazing memories.

The Last Fisherman Standing Project FOR CENTURIES, fishing families in Worthing have contributed to and shaped our town. And until recently, visitors to the shore would have welcomed the boats back some early mornings, with the fishermen pushing the boats up the shingle beach after spending hours out at sea catching bream, cod, huss or cuttlefish depending on the season.
HISTORIC FISHERMAN’S CHURCH The film tells the story of Malcolm, the last traditional fisherman on the Rame Peninsula, and illustrates the often unnoticed demise of small scale fishing all over the UK. The ‘Last Fisherman’ has received national and international attention, having been featured on Countryfile upon launch in September, and has won a number of international awards since then. After the film there will be a Q&A with the filmmakers We Are Ronin and Malcolm himself. Malcolm will be

However, this sight has become rarer over time. Fewer and fewer boats are seen going out to sea and our unique beach launch fishing fleet is quietly disappearing. The Last Fisherman Standing project, run by We Are FoodPioneers CIC, wants to protect the heritage of our fishing families in Worthing, recording and reviving the fishermen’s tales and sharing their vast knowledge of the sea on our doorstep with residents and visitors to our town alike. They also want to celebrate their contribution to our town, and revive and showcase some of the traditions of small scale beach launch fishing in Worthing over time.

THOMAS H GREEN’S MUSICAL TIME MACHINE
Punk Rock Worthing 1976-79 FOURTY YEARS AGO PUNK ROCK changed pop culture. Its lo-fi aesthetic, belligerent attitude and spiky sound inspired a generation. Music was no longer a closed shop. Now anyone could join in. However, much of today’s understanding of punk is based on books and films devoted to the scenes in London and Manchester – the Sex Pistols, The Buzzcocks, The Roxy, Sniffin’ Glue and so on. This sometimes misses how isolated punks felt across the rest of Britain. In towns such as Worthing – and its surrounding neighbourhoods – to be a punk in the 1970s meant becoming a social outcast. “I remember walking through the door of The Three Horseshoes pub in Lancing but the landlord just said, ‘Out!’,” says Caroline Hardy, then a punk with orange back-combed hair, “People’s reactions, it was like you had three heads. I was spat on, told I’d make a terrible mother and, once, someone stood up in a pub and shouted out I was the ugliest girl in the world.” For male punks, animosity regularly descended into physical violence. Certain pubs, notably The Central Hotel by Worthing Station (now The Grand Victorian
Hotel), still had a residue of bellicose teddy boys. Things weren’t even safe out in the country. “I went to a gig in Steyning by a little punk band from Steyning Grammar School called The Gun Club,” recalls Paul Cooledge, who was in his early teens at the time, “There were 30 or 40 punks there. When we passed The White Horse pub this big, hard local family attacked us. Everyone ran in all directions. I ended up on the Shoreham spaghetti junction. A car pulled up and I told them I thought I was going to die, so they gave me a lift, but a couple of people were severely beaten. Remember, most punks were between 13 and 17 but the people attacking them were 25 to 35.” For Worthing’s punks, such troubles were the price of joining what Caroline Hardy describes as “a huge, friendly social scene”. The town wasn’t big on gigs – everyone went to Brighton to see The Clash, The Stranglers and the like – but it was full of drinking holes. Punks based along the westward rail link
would meet in pubs that tolerated punks (and underage drinkers!) such as the Thieves Kitchen on Warwick Street (now the Vintners Parrot), The Egremont on Brighton Road, The Fountain on Chapel Road (now the Slug & Lettuce) and The Henty Arms in Ferring, the latter renowned for its jukebox. Meanwhile younger punks mulled over endless pots of tea at the British Home Stores café. All would converge on the record shops Memory Lane and Fine Records. Punk is often remembered as a music/fashion Year Zero but Worthing’s scene blended the old with the new. Initially there were hippies who simply ripped their flares or added 2” band badges to their lapels. With no Kings Roadstyle boutiques to hand, Worthing punks simply looked scruffy, shirts untucked or ripped, a tie at half mast, a jacket with badges on, and hair like Paul Weller on the first Jam album. For girls, a white shirt covered in lipstick scrawl or biro’d bands names with a tie and stockings was a cheap, popular look. Debbie T_____, the first Worthing girl to spike her hair into a Mohawk, aged 14, looked so alien that cars would slow down, their drivers staring, mouths agape. After a trip to London her photo ended up on the front of Japanese tourist guide. “If I was wearing a Sex Pistols
tee-shirt it would vanish and my mum would burn it,” recalls Paul Cooledge, “So I’d hide my clothes behind a furniture store and when I was at school I’d paint my plastic leather jacket with poster paints. I’d wear that into town then wash it off on the seafront so I could do it again the next week. Hair was spiked with soap which was great until it rained, then your eyes would be running as it washed down into your face.” There were a few punk gigs in Worthing, mainly fuelled by Brighton, particularly the Attrix label, as well as the Littlehampton scene. A notable concert was when Brighton bands The Piranhas, The Dodgems and Nicky & the Dots played The Assembly Hall, but there were also significant visits from Jonnie & the Lubes and others. Brighton bands The Egos and Joe Dash were led by Worthing musicians, and both blossomed into bigger bands in the ‘80s (This Colour and Venus in Furs, respectively), while one Brighton band, ‘Wrist Action’, even had a song entitled ‘West Worthing’. Closer to home smaller, now almost completely forgotten outfits would play The Montague pub (Montague Street, now closed) and other venues, the likes of The Bats, The Sick Plimsolls, F-X and The Stains.

“There were bands who could play but toned it down, but the Stains really couldn’t play,” says Kev Hough, who was a 15 year old punk in 1977, “They were like Flowers of Romance with Sid Vicious doing their version of The Lord’s Prayer, one chord, two chords maybe, but they played Ferring Youth Club and we loved them. The whole area had a particular style; cheeky chappy, angsty, with new wave humour. That fed in from Brighton which wasn’t an angry town. Worthing was angrier because it was more screwed up.”
Trade Records. That same year Penetration laid down their debut, ‘Don’t Dictate’ at Pebble Beach and, perhaps tastiest of all, The Adverts recorded lethal double-header and Top 20 hit ‘Gary Gilmore’s Eyes/ Bored Teenagers’. For those who lived punk it was a definitive time, helping to form their outlook on life. “I’d been a disco girl and women were more objectified,” says Caroline Hardy, “Women were treated more as equals on the punk scene, it was one big family, we all had a laugh together and there was no competition between the girls. The music took me overnight, although it took me a while to lose the perm…”
Even if Worthing wasn’t an essential hub for punk bands and gigs, Pebble Beach Studios in Teville Place hosted notable recording sessions. The Stranglers recorded early demos of three prime cuts, ‘(Get a) Grip “Punk in Worthing was more DIY (on Yourself)’ ‘Go Buddy Go’ and than London,” adds Kev Hough. “To ‘Bitching’, in the summer of 1976, me that’s what punk was about, an while the following year it saw attitude, and, in that sense, I still the recording of ‘Paris Maquis’ by think I’m a punk now.” ground-breaking French electropunks Metal Urbain, the first ever release on future indie giant, Rough To be a punk in Worthing four Image courtesy of Sarah Edmonds Illustration www.colonnadehouse.co.uk @ColonnadeHse
decades ago was to constantly run the gauntlet of endless trouble. It’s easier now but still requires commitment. 1970s punks have it in their blood, but Worthing’s Bar 42 still maintains the spirit, and local bands such Atombuzz, Numbskull, Flat Pig and Losers Club burn with it. So, if you like it lo-fi and DIY, get involved. As the once common but now fading graffiti would have it, PUNX NOT DEAD.

CINEMA & THEATRE
Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs WORTHING THEATRES AND PAUL HOLMAN ASSOCIATES invited local children aged 9 to 12 to audition for this year’s pantomime. Nick George, Associate Producer for Paul Holman Associates said “It was a really difficult process to choose who gets to be in the show and who doesn’t, as we had such a talented bunch turn up on the day. It’s great to bring the community together and give everyone the opportunity to shine on stage and we look forward
to seeing our chosen stars in Snow White this Christmas”. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs opens at the Pavilion Theatre from Friday 1 December 2017 until Monday 1 January 2018. Ticket info worthingtheatres.co.uk • PHOTO TOP RIGHT: The successful team chosen to be the juvenile dancers.
Folk Music Scene THE EVER-GROWING FOLK MUSIC SCENE IN WORTHING It always fascinates me to observe the way a place can change in such a short space of time, and I have noticed in particular, how Worthing has developed so much over the last few years.
WIN PANTOMIME TICKETS!
IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN… OH YES IT IS!
In line with this gradual cultural shift comes the programming of live events, which I feel in that time has jumped leaps and bounds. You could say it was by chance that back in 2013 the theatre’s programming team discovered our town’s love of folk music. After inviting Seth Lakeman to perform at the Connaught Theatre, the show sold out to full capacity. It was at this point that prestigious artists such as Kate Rusby and Show of Hands were booked for gigs in Worthing, again selling to full houses, and since then we have never looked back.
Win a family ticket to see the Worthing Pantomime Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs this December! To enter, answer the following question:
This year’s pantomime stars the one and only... A) Chesney Hawkes B) Mark Read C) Matt Evers Email your answer to
30
competition@hereandnowmag. co.uk by midnight Friday 24 November. To be entered, ‘Snow White’ must be in the subject line. Or, post your entry to Here & Now, PO Box 5012, Worthing BN11 9BW. The winner will be selected at random and notified by email or phone by Monday 27 November. Good Luck!
Across the years we have welcomed artist such as Donovan, Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention and Cara Dillon
just to name a few, and looking ahead from November we have loads more great gigs coming up. Bound together by a lifelong friendship, eight piece sea-shanty band Fisherman’s Friends make their debut at the seafront Pavilion Theatre (4th November). Then the following week we welcome Jon Boden on his special solo tour (10th November), the former lead singer of Bellowhead is out on tour following the release of his latest album ‘Afterglow’. Then to celebrate Christmas in style we’re filling the Connaught Studio with bagpipes, fiddles and step dancing as Calan, the international award-winning band from Wales comes to Worthing (10th December). Folk music has become a recent passion of mine, funnily enough after listening to Kate last year in Worthing following the release of her latest album ‘Ghost’. The genre is an amazing way to express emotion and escape into the wonderful world the artists reveal to us through their songs. Who would you love to see perform in Worthing? Drop us a message on Facebook and Twitter @ WorthingTheatre to let us know!

Connor’s View From The Ropetackle Arts Centre AS YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED, the catchment for the Here & Now music listings extends all the way to Shoreham, with venues such as the Ropetackle Arts Centre, the Duke of Wellington and the Piston Broke being represented. We decided that, for this month’s venue spotlight, we would explore the extremities of our listings and go for one of these! I went and saw the Big Boy Bloater & The Limits gig on 22 September for a flavour of the atmosphere down at the Ropetackle Arts Centre, and it was a corking night! Big Boy Bloater’s personality was as big as his guitar sound, with a voice reminiscent of Robert Cray. Backed by a fantastic band he brought out some of his newer material such as “She Didn’t Even Buy A Ticket” and “Sat Night Desperation Shuffle”. The support act, Blue Stragglers, delivered a great warm-up slot, with a darker, grungier vibe and a big sound. Looking forward to Nov at the Ropetackle Arts Centre, there is lots to be excited about. Nicole Henry visits on 8 Nov before opening up London Jazz Festival, bringing a quartet of UK jazz stars with her. Then to 24 Nov, when the Arts Centre will be graced by Baluji Shrivastav OBE, an extraordinarily talented Sitar player among other instruments. With a sneak peak beyond Nov, we can look forward to Shoreham’s own Richard Durrant performing his ‘Candlelit Christmas Concert’ on 2 Dec with help from special guests Amy Kakoura and Nick Pynn. Whatever your preferred style, there is something for you down at the Ropetackle, so get down there! To add your events to the listings, email Connor Connor Burke music@hereandnowmag.co.uk And list online for FREE maximum exposure at hereandnowmag.co.uk – we’ll download and add to the listings here.

Joe Bunn’s Bardic Trials Protest Everything
Do you like to stand around in the cold, holding a placard, complaining about the things you don’t like? Do you like to chant catchy slogans with people to change societal views? Then why not hold a protest? But wait, do you not have enough friends to stand with you, to make an impact on the powers that be? Would your one-person protest be more of a plip in a puddle rather than the tsunami of radical change you need? Then try out my new concept, it’s called Protest Everything.

The idea is simple, everyone who wants to protest something, anything at all, all get together in one place. And I do mean anything, say protesting the fact that South is referred to as down and North is referred to as Up and traditionally up is a good thing and down is a bad thing so maybe they should just swap the two things over. Or the sea, because the sea is an idiot. I’m getting off the point. Every unique protester gets together and creates their placards and signs, and composes the finest chants their minds can muster. Then they all meet again, in one very public place, say the new £1.2 million bandstand replacement in Worthing (a very protestable place). They all put on their loudest, most authoritative voices. Thus begins the protest. There is a soapbox provided, where people stand and shout their grievances. Everyone there will cheer along when they hear a point they agree with. You see, just because people aren’t there to protest that specific point, they might have thought about it at some time, and they might agree. The cheering lends weight to the protester on the soapbox’s argument, and so on with the next protester. This way, you can ensure you’re not preaching to the choir, and you might get a few sopranos from another church on your side along the way. And because everyone wants to protest something, there would hopefully be a whole lot of agreeing going on. Everything protested is listed on a large roll of paper, which is handed to the local press when they almost certainly arrive, because there is such a large group of people making a fuss. And voila, you’ve made a point, and not just any point, every point.
•
Joe Bunn So there we go, when in doubt, PROTEST EVERYTHING.

THE WORTHING BYPASS
This column will not change your views on Brexit WATCHING A RECENT ITEM ON THE NEWS discussing the potential impact of Brexit on Worthing, I couldn’t help but raise a cheer to Here & Now’s proclamation that our town will continue to exist. Bravo. Alas, this was a rare moment of measured response as most soothsaying media pundits are a notoriously fickle brood, furrowing eyebrows at forthcoming economic disaster one minute, whilst predicting a world of daisies the next. And you can’t please any of the people all of the time because there are those with hay fever who would pooh-pooh a word of daisies. Sneezing heathens!
…this all makes sense when you stand back from it. About as far away as Holland should do it…
indifference to the human condition through skewered self-centred perspectives and the higher objective of putting the story of people first, not yourself. You do not have to be a complete self-serving, ruthless moron to get on, as the Apprentice template would suggest. In fact you can be terribly human and still prevail. A bit like Sweden.
are now, mutually I might add, festooned in a Noah’s ark floating on a sea of daisies. Tragically for fans of those much lambasted newshounds, the bobbing head of a Paxman or a Humphries can be spotted above the daisy-line before succumbing to eternal damnation in Dante’s updated Inferno, bubbling away nicely at boiling point just below the surface.
Whether you voted Brexit or not concerns me not a jot, it is your contribution to the society we’re living in now that floats my boat. Speaking of which, dear Hackista (ok, it’s a work in progress), my calls in the last edition for your comments on the state of the world, and failing that, Worthing, completely fell on deaf ears, as would be expected if it had been given an ounce of forethought. I would ask you to write in and describe what floats your boat, but that will go unheeded too so I’m tempted to retract the
Strangely enough, I was once invited onto the Today programme as a mindless media pundit and courteously declined in case of being grilled alive live on air by the latter descending head. Some time later I bumped into J H in the WC of a conference we were at and mentioned this act of outright cowardice. “I don’t blame you” he said brightly before washing his hands and dispensing of my presence with unnecessary glee. “I’d have eaten you alive”.
last sentence were it not for the fact that I get paid by the word, so nothing ventured, nothing gained.
He didn’t say the last part. He’s actually a great journalist and a lovely guy, but since when did we start introducing truth to pollute a good fairy tale?
My deep and undying distrust of the media comes from being of similar stock: deadline bedraggled, hounded by headline frenzied subs, scratching a living out of making the irrelevant sound mildly convincing. Send us a stat and we’ll peddle a dream; turn us your attention and we’ll preach ‘til you wretch; send us a soundbite and we’ll sing it from dawn ‘til dusk, filling space until you feel like you’re drowning in a sea of soul destroying, salivating repetition, repeated 24/7 through the eternal misery of 24-hour rolling news. If Dante were alive today he’d introduce a whole new circle of hell in which to pitch headlinehunting newshounds. I’d happily pitch up with marshmallows on a stick to hear them sizzle and fry and sample the juicy outtakes. If the aforementioned sounds cynical towards the trade that has paid the mortgage then it’s because it hasn’t. Not that part of the trade anyway: the rabid, grasping, news-hungry slobbering of a ravenous hack long since ceded into temperate, balanced perspectives on the big, bad world and an earnest, if forlorn, endeavour to bring the eejits to account. I do not mean to exalt my only virtue, just point out the oh-so subtle difference between

At this point, for those unfamiliar with the trials and tribulations at the heart of the Worthing Bypass, you should be aware that this all makes sense if you stand back from it just a bit. About as far away as Holland should do it. Which brings me to an image I haven’t been able to get out of my head since completing the second paragraph. That is, a world of daisies. Unfortunately, since adding the floating boat we
Anyway viewers, to wrap up that segment, for those of you wishing to find out more about the impact of a hard, soft or just simply squishy Brexit on Worthing, try the news, it’s full of it.
