WORTHING LIFE
One year on… MIKE PAILTHORPE REFLECTS ON A YEAR OF HERE & NOW IN WORTHING… A year already since we started this? Twelve deadlines, twelve issues past, and thousands of copies of the magazine you currently hold in your hands have been published and distributed throughout this unique seaside town of something like - if West Sussex County Council estimates are accurate - 108,000 residents. October 2016 saw the debut of Here & Now, and a year later, I’ve been asked to look back and see how far we’ve come together, the 108,000 of us that live, work, study, play, make stuff, eat, shop, dance and sing in Worthing.
promoters have lost no time in putting on gigs and parties to fill this bigger Coast Cafe up. One of these is DESTINATION, who describe themselves as the only ‘youth-run’ event promoter in town for underground dance music from House and Disco to Techno. The Destination team are putting on parties at Coast and at TANGERINE as the students return from the Summer break. Also new is the ‘DOWNSOUTH’ Rap Collective. Four months old, the nine members have played several gigs and begun a residency on Brighton’s Trickstar FM. SAMURAI NIGHTS

New Music and Art Venues Music venues we had this time last year are mostly still in place, but better still, we have some new venues. There’s now an Arts Club in Worthing! Under the equally new and welcome VIEW CAFE overlooking the promenade is the CELLAR ARTS CLUB (full disclosure at this point: I became member number 302 so I could get access to events such as June’s book signing by founders of original Punk venue the Roxy Andrew Czezowski and Susan Carrington and then July’s acoustic gig by UK Reggae classic band The Cimarrons). All kinds of small scale Arts events are to be found there, so check our listings at the back of this magazine! COAST CAFE has had a significant building renovation and extension with a new bar, giving the seafront bar a much larger capacity, sitting nicely between the small, but perfectly formed BAR 42 and the 400 capacity ST PAUL’S. Worthing

has expanded their Dance Music events at

celebrity DJs and performers such as DEXY’S KEVIN ROWLAND and HAPPY MONDAY’S BEZ. TOT ROCKIN’ BEATS have kept

nights at Coast. Original music appears all over town, including Bar 42, at weekend, afternoon Northbrook MET College events on the LIDO stage, at the new View Cafe and the Cellar Arts Bar. This is where the local music scene gets to experiment, re-invent and refresh itself. Look out for them, they can surprise you. BOUDICCA PEPPER at the ONE LOVE EVENT was a multi-talented stand-out, playing, singing, rapping her own music alongside NELSON NAVARRO. Don’t forget highly
skilled, inventive, veteran original music makers such as CRAYOLA LECTERN, or PETE FIJI & TERRY BICKERS, or CHRIS SIMMONS, who has just sold out St Pauls over a month in advance of his tour date. COLONNADE HOUSE, THE ARTS HUB, is not technically a music
venue, but it did feature live rapping, singing and Street Dance performances and workshops both inside and out as part of its 4 ELEMENTS Hip Hop exhibition. This followed some unusual dancing in the dark during the evenings of digital art installation ‘GEMINATE II’, where local artists AS DESCRIBED created interactive visuals which made passers-by want to dance and flex as soon as they found out they could control the light displays in the Colonnade windows. Was it Music? Was it Art? It was great fun, and fascinating enough for people to return with their friends for more. PHIL DUCKETT has continued to bring international Blues stars to play his majestic WORTHING PIER SOUTHERN PAVILION, but he also took over the new WARREN BALLROOM at WORTHING COLLEGE’s campus for a CRAIG CHARLES evening and an ALL DAY BLUES FESTIVAL in August, and the same weekend brought X-Factor star REBECCA FERGUSON to the 1100 seater Assembly Hall.
There was plenty of great Comedy this year—RUSSELL BRAND filled the Assembly Hall twice, while RUSSELL KANE filled the Pavilion Theatre. A remarkable feature of the Russell Brand gig was that I recognised only one other member of the 1100 capacity audience. That makes me feel optimistic about our potential audiences. July’s WORTHING COMIC-CON had queues out the ASSEMBLY HALL
HERE & NOW ONE YEAR ON doors of TimeLords, Sith warriors, aliens and all kinds of Cosplayers, from Worthing and all around the county. Even elections became interesting, as diverse and new local entrants challenged for public office. Party majorities that had been in place for generations became much less of a foregone conclusion, and as the town’s demographic has changed, so new voices have started to be heard, such as transgender Labour candidate Sophie Cook. More young people voted this year than ever before, and there was a feeling that, whatever your party allegiance, change is in the air. We gained a new Labour Councillor, the first in 40 years, Beccy Smith. The two

North along from DD’s, you will now find SALSA VIVA, one of three new Mexican food places to open this year. The new LITTLE LIMING take-away is along Chapel Road on the way up to Teville Gate, while REBECCA’S has also opened for Mexican and Tapas in Worthing’s West End Montague Street. If a beef burger is more your thing, then the new WOODS BURGER KITCHEN in Portland Road will be perfect for you. RIGHT NOW—as we suddenly

gymnastics, family shows (but also some frankly buff bodies) and more to the theatres, and also to other parts of the town. There were workshops in town, and a free spectacle of dancers suspended from the top of the newly GRAFFITI PAINTED GRAFTON STREET CAR PARK. Spectators gathered outside
the Lido to watch a unique event inspired by WIM WENDERS’ WINGS OF DESIRE, with music to match.

sitting Worthing MPs were returned in June with reduced majorities but more votes, which means more eligible voters had participated than in previous elections, which we can all agree is a positive outcome. Let’s not forget this has been a year of great food with some great new eateries and coffee shops. BLACK CROW COFFEE by the Worthing Central railway crossing even has visitors from Brighton seeking out their specialist coffee equipment and style.
Other local anagram delights include Ginger Man (Angmering), Rotund Grin (Durrington), Long Vain Thighs, (High Salvington), Vinyl Loaf End (Findon Valley) Noisy Beggar (Goring-By-Sea), while Brighton becomes Orb Night.

Collections in Bloom Emma Walder, Curator, introduces us to the latest exhibition at Worthing Museum & Art Gallery. Flowers have provided artists and designers with a rich source of inspiration for centuries. From still life to dresses, and from jewellery to wallpaper, floral designs have been chosen time and time again as a theme. They truly are Nature’s gift to the artist, offering an entire visual language of shape, colour and pattern to draw upon. It is perhaps therefore no surprise that flowers can be found in so many areas of the Worthing Museum & Art Gallery collections, and is the theme for its forthcoming major exhibition, Collections in Bloom, this autumn. The exhibition will showcase an eclectic display of drawings, paintings, ceramics, costumes and textiles, in a visual celebration of all things floral. Across these different parts of the collection visitors can expect to be delighted by the variation on display; vibrant colours applied liberally to canvases will sit alongside more intricate, detailed designs and studies in pencil or embroidery, for example. One highlight will be White Poppies; a tempera oil painting by Hungarian artist, Gyula Sajó (1918-1989), which will be on display at WMA for the very first time. Sajó was responsible for training many Worthing artists in a range of techniques from his home and studio on Chesswood Road, Worthing. He had studied art and architecture in his native Hungary, moving to Britain in the 1950s to escape the uprising. WMA owns a small number of his works within the fine art collection, this one being the most recently acquired of them, bequeathed to the collection in 2015. The painting shows a close-up still life of flowers in a vase. Large white poppies with vibrant yellow centres are surrounded by foliage, with shades of green from across the artist’s palette. But far from being a neat, manicured bouquet, this painting joyfully presents us with a more organic and lush selection of buds and blooms, sitting proudly in their blue vase and seeming, almost, as if to stare right back at us with their yellow ‘faces’. Flowers are frequently used in art and design not only for their aesthetic qualities but also for their metaphorical meanings. With the white poppy being a symbol of pacifism, one cannot help but consider a connection with Sajó’s background; forced to leave his home in 1944 amongst political and economic turmoil, he and his wife went to live in Austria. Back in Hungary after the war, he was viewed with suspicion by the communist authorities having been living freely in the West. In 1956 as a result of the Hungarian revolution, he fled Hungary with his wife and son for good, this time for the UK. Sajó was perhaps a man simply searching for a peaceful existence, which after a short stay in London’s East end, he finally seemed to find in Worthing.

The painting captures a fleeting moment during which these flowers are at their most vibrant, before they inevitably wither and fade. Perhaps their ephemeral nature is part of what has made florals such an appealing subject matter for artists, designers and craftsmen over the ages, as well as continuing to provide inspiration to contemporary practitioners. Collections in Bloom will be on display from Saturday 16 September until Saturday 31 March 2018 in the Art Gallery of WMA.

Shoreham Wordfest, 28 Sep - 19 Oct 2017 Festival programme: Modernism, writing a new world. A great feast of readings, talks, walks, song and fun awaits. “There is something for everyone in our autumn festival,” said organiser Rosalind Turner. “We start with the charismatic
broadcaster and vicar of Firle, Peter OwenJones talking about his love of the South Downs, and finish with Southwick’s own performance poet Attila the Stockbroker, appearing with Murray Lachlan Young.” In between there are plays, authors, and a three-week photographic exhibition, talks and a play about Lee Miller, world renowned photojournalist and muse of the surrealist movement with her husband Roland Penrose. The programme features a special Wordfest tour of their home, Farley Farm in Chiddingly. “This year’s theme is Modernism,” said fellow organiser David Johnson, “focusing on the twentieth century artistic and literary movement in Sussex, featuring Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell, for example. But we are also exploring books and ideas now, with creative writing sessions and a debate with Guardian journalist Rafael Behr, on the idea of fake news and how to be an active citizen at a time of confusion.” There are plenty of opportunities for fun as well, with a spoof play, TEEN People, written by Worthing playwright Simon Messingham with Mark Gatiss, screen writer for many Dr Who episodes. Also the first Shoreham Wordfest Cabaret, hosted by author and magician Tom Cutler, which promises “an evening of subversive thrills!”
Meanwhile junior helper, Casey Chalk, aged 7, is looking forward to the story telling session and the Michael Morpugo play, ‘Why the Whales Came’. For info on all events see shorehamwordfest.com. Book via ropetacklecentre.co.uk/wordfest or in person. And see HERE & NOW listings.

Spotlight on… Sarah Pond The Girl By Sarah Pond As she caught a glance in her direction, she felt the air leave her lungs in a rush. For a moment, she felt light headed. She stood stock-still, allowing time for her body to re-ground itself. She wasn’t even aware of the people moving around her, only the imperceptible change in the air, which added to her feelings of awe. Growing up, she had never thought of herself as beautiful, and no one had really paid her very much attention. Certainly, she was sure, no one had ever looked at her the way she was now looking at the ethereal vision opposite.
Local author Sarah has always had a love of books, but didn’t know she was going to write one until she started and couldn’t stop! She self-published Citrus Blossom and Hibiscus as e-books through
Smashwords in 2016 and as paperbacks this year. Sarah lives in Worthing, where she is often found writing in coffee shops. For info sarahpond.co.uk Competition Win a copy of Citrus Blossom (has adult content). WORTHING LIFE
Why Worthing? SOME ARE BORN IN WORTHING, SOME ACHIEVE RESIDENCE IN WORTHING, SOME HAVE WORTHING THRUST UPON THEM.
In our WHY WORTHING section, HERE & NOW digs into the backgrounds of a selection of Worthing’s busy residents who weren’t born here, but have migrated from all corners of the world (usually Brighton and London). Perhaps their perspectives can help us in our quest to keep cultivating Worthing until it’s the best place anyone could ever live? This month, we asked Susie P Smith, “Why Worthing?” Susie works as an English Language teacher & Examiner, but you can meet her in all areas of Worthing life, with the Sunny Worthing team, the Cellar Arts Club, the Train of Thought, the One Love Festival and the Worthing Women’s Hub amongst many other cultural and fun activities. She’s also finds time to be a part time choir singer and DJ. Why did you first come to Worthing? Susie: We moved to be nearer new jobs, and to take a break from the fast pace of London!
Photos: Ana Bohane Photography
Why have you stayed? Susie: After a disappointing first year, (I wanted to go home!) I found likeminded people that wanted to get involved in improving the town. I got really involved and haven’t looked back! I also wanted my son to complete secondary school and not be disrupted with another move. What TO YOU in Worthing is worth keeping? Susie: All our amazing independent shops, restaurants and cafes. What’s the best £1.50 you can spend in Worthing? (Or the best £5—we’re not stingy)
One Love Worthing Event
Susie: Gelato from Giuseppes Lite, any small gift from Inspired By The Sea (the shop on the prom) Last Question—what single thing do you miss most from living in London that you would like to transplant to Worthing? Susie: Single thing—My Grandson (and his parents!) And Portobello Road. Thanks Susie! Susie is involved in the promotion of a positive vibe in Sunny Worthing, promoting the town’s rich diverse culture, and supporting ethnic minority groups. Susie was involved in organising the recent Sussex Day – Diversity and was part of a team of organisers for September’s One Love Festival at St Paul’s, an all-age community event for all to celebrate the diversity of Worthing and recognise that we have more in common. This year’s event was a great success and saw live performances including a soul choir, Celebration Samba, Sean Murray, Nelson Navarro & Reggae DJ Rewind Selecta, art workshops, spoken word, and much more. We look forward to the next one!

TANGLE We can help you plan a Christmas party for 2 to 100. Private dining rooms are available.
THE HAIRLESS BIKER Great for sharing after an evening scaring the neighbours while trick or treating with the kids. We make this with cream cheese and crispy bacon strips on one side and tomato puree and cooked cajun chicken on the other, with cooked peppers and onions on top and enough cheese to kill a horse! Amazing with mango salsa or cream and chive dip. Try with different fillings, cajun quorn pieces, bolognese mince, pepperoni or jalapeños for extra heat! INGREDIENTS 1 pizza base (Ready Rolled Round Pizza Dough 280g) pizza sauce or tomato puree 1/4 cup cream cheese 1/2 cup crispy bacon strips 1/2 cup cajun spiced chicken 1/2 cup cooked peppers 1/4 cup cooked onions 150g Mozzarella, sliced 1/2 cup cheddar, grated 1/2 cup basil chopped Garlic butter, for coating
METHOD Lay your pizza base on a sheet of baking paper. Make 4 cuts with a pizza cutter in the centre of the dough – this will create a star shape that will give you 8 triangles of dough to fold outwards towards the edge. Place cream cheese on one side and pizza sauce on the other, leaving a decent circle of dough in the middle untouched (where your slits are). Add bacon strips to the cream cheese, cajun chicken to the tomato puree and cover both sides with cooked peppers and onions, then add grated cheese, mozzarella and basil on top of this. Grab one of the triangles from the centre and overlap it with the corresponding outside edge of the pizza. Continue until you have completed the pizza. Coat with garlic butter and then place in heated oven for 20 minutes.

MY COMMUNITY MATTERS
Giving is Good, right, but how do ensure your money counts locally? EACH YEAR A NEW CAMPAIGN is launched by Remember A Charity— rememberacharity.org.uk—and this year was no exception with a call to the public to ‘Have your say on the world you want to pass on’ and ‘support a cause you love - leave a gift to charity’. You may have heard about it on the radio or read about it in the national press sometime between 11-17 September? It’s a great idea to encourage more people to leave something to charity after their loved ones are provided for, and I have already sorted my Will out. But, campaigns like ‘Remember A Charity’ could be said to be targeted at raising the profile of the larger charities as the membership fees are based on a charity’s income and even a ‘small charity’ would have to pay fees close on £300. That simply is not an option for many small, local charities.
So, what is an alternative local option? How can you donate now, or give after your death, to ensure local charities and your local community, benefits? Well the Sussex Community Foundation, an excellent fundraising and grant making organisation, can help. They gave £1.9 million in grants last year, and manage a wide portfolio of investment specifically to support the work of the Sussex voluntary sector. Providing grants to groups across Sussex year-on-year, their impact is huge. In fact, VAW currently benefits from a grant to support the delivery of the VAW Trustee Club – a free to join, membership club specifically for local charity trustees – go to vaworthing.org.uk/trusteeclub for more information.
So, if you are interested in supporting local charities financially you could take a look at sussexgiving.org.uk. Contact VAW if you would like to find out more about local organisations who are VAW members (we don’t charge membership), or take a look on the Charity Commission site to see an overview of your favoured local charity before you make a commitment.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU The Worthing and Adur Fund at Sussex Community Foundation is all about our long-term commitment to Worthing people. We raise money from generous donors and then use it to make grants to small charities and community groups who work tirelessly to support communities in Worthing and Adur. Since 2011, the Worthing and Adur Fund has given out grants worth over £20,000 to 27 charities and community groups in the area. Worthing Town FC Under-5s (pictured here) received a £500 grant last year to buy new goals, balls and training bibs. Leaving a legacy to Worthing and Adur means that what’s important to you – your values - will not die with you but will continue to benefit future generations of local people, enabling us to support a wide range of causes and be
flexible to changing local needs. We guarantee to use your gift in the most effective way. Making a will does not have to be expensive or complicated and can be a very tax-efficient way to give to charity, but you should consult a solicitor for advice. You can also make minor changes or additions to your existing will.

New name & look for established Worthing counselling charity
On 11 October, Worthing Counselling Centre will become the new name for Offington Counselling Service, a charity which has been serving the community of Worthing for almost 35 years. The decision to change the name to Worthing Counselling Centre was taken to raise awareness of the charity and its scale as a major provider of counselling in Worthing. Anna Hayward, Head of Centre tells us “Over the years, we have provided ongoing counselling for well in excess of 5,000 people, so we want to make sure that we are a visible, wellrecognised point of access for local support for emotional wellbeing. Our new name places us firmly where we belong, at the heart of the community of Worthing”. The charity provides weekly counselling for those with
emotional difficulties. It offers fast access counselling for those who do not want to wait and financially supported counselling if cost could be a barrier, aiming to provide support as widely as possible. The date for the launch of the new identity ties in with Worthing Mental Health Awareness Week (WMHAW) at Offington Park Methodist Church, where Worthing Counselling Centre has been based since 1983. On Wednesday 11 October, Worthing Counselling Centre will host a ‘Come & Meet Us’ session at 10am–12noon, including a free talk ‘The Courage to Heal’ and refreshments, plus a celebration quiz night at 7pm, tickets £5, all proceeds to Worthing Counselling Centre’s bursary fund. For more information about counselling, or for tickets for the quiz night call 01903 212275 or visit the current website ocs-counselling.org.uk (new website goes live on 11 October).

Men Talk Health, Weak? WELL, THE NIGHTS HAVE WELL AND TRULY DRAWN IN. WE WAKE UP IN THE DARK, GO TO BED IN THE DARK AND ACTUALLY SPEND A LOT OF TIME, IN THE DARK, WHICH ISN’T THE BEST WAY TO LIVE YOUR LIFE. BUT IMAGINE IF IT WASN’T JUST THE WEATHER MAKING IT DARK
The concept of ‘Manning up’ is so far ingrained in us that the mere idea of discussing that you know what, we might not be coping; is as alien as admitting we don’t know the offside rule.
‘Men being emotional is only meant to happen when their football team loses/ wins or after eight pints of lager when telling their best mate, they love them, on a night out’.
Then when you get the baby home all the ‘book learning’ you’ve done as right-on Dad goes utterly out of the window.
my way through it all. I was just waiting for the moment for the world to call me out on it and the weight of holding it together was incredibly stressful.
I remember when my son was born, I had just launched my first business. I was working stupid hours trying to win new clients while coming to terms with 8 pounds and 4 ounces of pink wrinkles turning our life upside down.
I was a complete impostor, and he was saddled with an imbecile for a father. All the men I knew seemed to have the whole dad lark nailed down to perfection, but for some reason, I couldn’t get it down at all. Now imagine how much easier my life would have been had I just talked to someone about it all…
My justification was that I was building something for him to be proud of and to keep my family financially safe. I now see that this was in part also a coping strategy, albeit a pretty ropey one.
WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY IS 10 OCTOBER. DON’T SUFFER IN SILENCE.

MY COMMUNITY MATTERS
CONTINUES ON PAGE 23
Citizen Sane To celebrate Worthing Mental Health Awareness Week 2017, HERE & NOW invited local folk from a variety of Worthing groups to speak about the importance of making connections within our communities and how getting involved can prevent us from getting down… The Worthing Laughter Therapy Group Lesley Raphael, Laughter Leader “A few years ago, I found myself in a very dark place and hit rock bottom. I guess I asked the Universe for help and found myself typing the word ‘laughter’ into Google. From there I discovered laughter clubs and eventually trained as a laughter leader. Here’s something most people don’t know… the brain can’t tell the difference between real and fake laugher. If you pretend laugh, you’ll still benefit from a flood of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that produces feelings of happiness. The group is made up of different ages, gender and backgrounds. One woman hadn’t laughed in the four years since her father had died, another was told off as a child for laughing and others use laughter sessions as a form of pain relief. It’s really like a form of exercise too. During a good chuckle, we deliver a massive intake of oxygen to our bodies and our diaphragms move up and down massaging our internal organs. Some experts
say 10 minutes of laughing is the same as 30 minutes in the gym. We often get people who just can’t seem to stop laughing once they start, but it’s cathartic and that’s ok. I laughed my way out of my mental and physical health problems and others can do it too.”

Spring into Soul Community Choir
Superstar Arts
Carol Glenister, Committee Member
Jo Telling, Co-founder
“The biggest misconceptions about joining a gospel and soul choir is that you have to be an amazing singer and that we’re aligned to Christianity only. Anyone can join us regardless of their signing ability and we’re a non-denomination choir so we really are open to the whole community regardless of religious beliefs. Our Musical Director, Siggi Mwasote, runs our Lifted
workshops designed for smaller groups. It’s here that people can forge strong friendships and confidence grows which is especially important to those who are having a tough time because of personal situations. Group singing has positive effects on mental health and is especially helpful for those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease mainly because singing puts the lungs to the test. We run 12 week terms to get ready for a performance at the end during which we support one another and make genuine connections while working towards a shared goal of a public performance which really is a fantastic experience.”
For more info visit springintosoul.co.uk
“We set up Superstar Arts in 2012 to deliver high quality, innovative artistic experiences for a range of people with learning difficulties. People who come and join us grow friendships, improve social skills and develop positive, productive relationships with the local community. Isolation and disconnection is a huge issue for people with learning disabilities and their families. Providing a network has been really important for participants to meet and make friends through our friendship group, Superfriends which meets once a week and organises different monthly weekend trips. It provides respite
for parents or carers too. Over 20 of our participants recently took part in the Worthing Carnival in August. They designed, made, painted and printed all the costumes and decorations for their Medieval-themed float. They had an amazing reception from the crowd and so many compliments in the quality of their work. People with learning disabilities have so much to contribute but have been underestimated for too long. I’m always so moved by the pride that participants take in their achievements.”
Superstar Arts are running a print workshop as part of WMHAW (see P17). For more info visit superstararts.co.uk

Conscious Dance
Empty Plate Café
Denise Barnett, Soul Motion Teacher
Kate Louise Eleanor Langan, Volunteer
“Conscious dance is about selfexpression, discovery, healing and fun! There’s no set steps it’s purely a space where we come together in a safe, non-judgmental community to find our own rhythm. My fellow dance teacher Sjanie and I intentionally set up to this class to foster connection. We’re
both trained to work with people with mental health challenges and I’ve certainly had my own and come out the other side. While it may feel scary to come along and take part, it’s more difficult to heal from anxiety, low mood, depression or other health challenges in isolation. No one will be watching you when you dance! In class, everyone is too busy getting out of their heads and into their own body while enjoying the music to worry what others are doing. The group provides a friendly space and support for those who want to join us and experience the healing power of music and dance.”

“On my first day as a volunteer at the café, I was asked to stuff a marrow. I’d never stuffed a marrow in my life, but I gave it a go! Three months later, I’m still there and I’ve learnt so much about cooking and food waste. Having ME and depression, volunteering has helped me to feel less isolated. I love the banter in the kitchen and meeting all the different people who come through the door. The café feeds the community with perfectly good food destined for landfill, and customers only pay what they can afford. They come from such a variety of backgrounds. We meet the elderly, the young, families on low on income and people with
learning disabilities. It feels good to provide a freshly prepared nutritious meal to those people who may feel they aren’t
a priority in society. I love that everyone is welcome to eat with us at the café.”

Tide of Light 2017 It’s that time of year, kids back to school, leaves starting to drop and nights beginning to shorten. For us here at Tide of Light HQ this is the best bit of the year as we start to shape up plans for Worthing’s biggest event. This year we are all super excited about the plans for lanterns, music and performers for the parade. We have some really exciting collaborations happening with the Tot Rockin Beats and Worthing Ice Rink so it will be an afternoon and evening worth coming out for. We will be heading into local primary schools in the run up to half term to make over 1000 lanterns ahead of the event and free crafting will take place on the day at the Pavilion and the Ice Rink. If you would like your school to take part please talk to your headteacher or email us at info@tideoflight.co.uk There’ll be a chance to ‘press the button’ for the fireworks when we
launch our crowdfunder later on in September, so keep an eye out on Facebook for updates. Tide of Light is a free town centre family night out on Sunday 5 November, with a lantern parade, main stage, Street food, funfair and of course fireworks. The group behind this massive party is the Tide of Light Community Group with representation from across the community, including Here & Now. Funded entirely from donations, we rely on sponsorship and fundraising and the hard work of all the volunteers. This year we are lucky to have secured a grant from Worthing & Adur Fund to help us replenish the crafting equipment for the free crafting at the Pavilion Theatre on the night. The fireworks are funded by the Lions Charity and on the night the Lions will be out
in force collecting for all the great causes they support.

We are proud to offer a safe family focused event for the whole community. Over 35,000 people attended last year and with the whole town centre as our

Finance Corner DO I NEED LIFE INSURANCE IF I HAVE A MORTGAGE?
MATT SUTTON, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF EMERALD FINANCE, your local award winning financial advisers, is here to answers your financial questions. Got a query? Email on info@emeraldfinance.co.uk.
It normally isn’t a compulsory requirement to have life insurance if you take out a mortgage but it’s certainly a prudent one. Life insurance ensures that if you passed away that there would be sufficient funds to pay off the mortgage debt. This is key when a husband and wife or two partners have a mortgage together and would struggle to repay the debt on a single income. This is vital if there are children involved as it can significantly help the surviving family to maintain their current lifestyle without a mortgage to pay. Ensure you get a competitive quote from your adviser and that they are comparing all the different
insurers available. Certain banks and advisers only provide quotes from a single insurance company so it’s important to clarify this. Prices vary significantly between different insurers depending on age, smoker status and the period of time you have the insurance over so make sure the different insurers are being compared to get the best deal.
on the payout - yes the taxman can potentially take a chunk of a life insurance payout too! This will also make sure that the insurance is paid to those you would like it to go to and that payment is made quickly so that family don’t struggle whilst the estate is going through probate or administration (how your assets are distributed post death).
Beware of reviewable premiums as the cost will rise over time so these may end up being more expensive. Compare a guaranteed premium which means that the price you look at today stays level for the whole time the insurance is held.
There are also other insurances to consider such as Critical Illness which covers a wider range of ailments, Income Protection which can provide you with an income if you are unable to work, and Family Income Benefit which can provide the family with an income if you were to pass away. Ask your adviser to explain the different covers and if they are appropriate for you.
The most important thing is to make sure you have a Trust Deed put in place for the life insurance. This will mean you don’t pay inheritance tax
The missing piece of your retirement plan A Lifetime Mortgage could help fill the gap in your finances, allowing the comfortable retirement you deserve Contact us for qualified and impartial advice Call us on 01903 222 940 or find us at www.emeraldfinance.co.uk This is a lifetime mortgage. To understand the features and risks please ask for a personalised illustration. Our typical advice fee would be £1495. A lifetime mortgage may impact your entitlement to means tested benefits and the inheritance you may leave. Plan availability is subject to lenders’ criteria and dependent on their terms and conditions. Think carefully before securing other debts against your home. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

Take some Forward Steps towards CSR
CSR can be a scary acronym, especially when you’re a small to medium business. Corporate Social Responsibility is the sort of thing that only large companies have to deal with right? Even for these firms, it can be difficult to deliver and find out what actually needs to be done. Worthing and Adur Chamber realised that many businesses wanted to be involved in the local community but had no idea where to start and were too small to meet the criteria to be part of Business In the Community (bitc.org.uk), a charity set up by the Prince of Wales to get large companies more involved in their local communities. They came up with the idea of a portal that could match company offers and resources with community organisation needs. The idea was put to BITC, Business Connector programme and funding came from UK Power Networks to start a facilitation website that can present both sides of the coin and then match them too. Forward Steps was born.
WHY CONSIDER CSR FOR YOUR BUSINESS? There are many benefits to having an active CSR policy that works for you, for your staff and for the local community, including: • Increased awareness—customers prefer to deal with companies who are active in the local community. Commercial sense can be applied through finding an activity related to your product or your own local area.
• Motivated staff—engaging the staff in community projects and getting them involved can significantly improve job satisfaction and staff retention • Boost recruitment—Being known as a responsible employer in the local community will help when it comes to growth The new Forward Steps website enables businesses to post their offer (staff time, meeting rooms, training sessions, free equipment etc) and community groups to post their needs and search for a match. Each business is kept anonymous until a community group asks for an introduction. Only once a business accepts do both parties become known to each other.
Once we have enough businesses signed up we will then launch it to the community through our friends at Voluntary Action Worthing and Community Works who are heavily involved with many other groups and can disseminate the information to all the right parties. We will have a panel of speakers to portray their thoughts on how to participate and give back to the community as a business whatever size you are and hope to have the BITC Ambassador for the SouthEast join us to explain their role.”

Is Your Van Costing you money? LAST MONTH, I TALKED ABOUT THE WORRYING RISE IN VAN BREAK INS. HOWEVER, IT’S NOT ALL DOOM AND GLOOM... There are many ways to reduce the costs of running your van. For example, if your van is sign written, (even if it’s just contact details), statistically speaking, it is less likely to be stolen and therefore less risk to insure. So, get on to your insurance company. The amount you could save might even pay for the sign writing itself. FREE advertising! Another tip to get your insurance premium reduced is to let them know if you are a member of a trade body (NICEIC, Gas Safe, Federation of Master Builders etc.). Even if your present insurer won’t make a reduction, make sure you mention it next time you apply for cover. Every little helps. Additional security on your van can also bring down these premiums, as well as keeping your tools and stock safe and secure. Dead locks, slam locks, alarms and trackers…. don’t leave it until it’s too late! Did you know that 56% of drivers that fight a parking ticket WIN? It can be tough to go about your daily business without falling foul of parking restrictions. I was once fined for being in a motorway services for more than 2hrs, as I was working on a broken-down truck. I contested it and won. So it’s definitely worth contesting tickets if you think they were unfairly issued.
Now I’m not suggesting you go and join Weightwatchers, but shedding a few pounds from your van could save you £100s a year in fuel. Do you really need to carry all that stuff in the back? Get organised and only carry what you need. Remember: the lighter the van, the less fuel you burn. Keeping those tyres inflated could save an average of £110 a year. Only using your air conditioning when you really need it could save an incredible £360 a year! And removing that roof rack when it’s not needed could save another £360 a year (it pays to get one that’s easy to remove). Lastly, no one wants to be left at the side of the road with a big bill for vehicle recovery. Get yourself some breakdown cover from as little as £60 per year, or check with your insurance company to see if you are already covered. Following some of these tips could save you £100s—What are you waiting for? Mark Cropley, Director, Whitebox Van

JOE BUNN’S BARDIC TRIALS
Local Culture Soakathlon
CONNOR’S VIEW FROM COAST CAFÉ Kerri Watt’s gig at Coast Café last month was one not to be missed! There was pin drop silence, rapturous applause and 2 encores for Kerri, who played a blinding set of original material reminiscent of KT Tunstall and Sheryl Crow. Coast Café has benefitted massively from the new expansion, which gave the gig a great concert atmosphere and ensured a night that the audience won’t forget. This new format opens up the back of the café, with everybody able to see where the music happens. Looking forward to next month, the Coast Café schedule features Coastal Connections (13 October), a music showcase preceded by open mic. Daniel Searle’s hilarious lunch poetry graces the Coastal connections menu, along with local acts Owen Wilson and Jimbo Tipler. October’s main feature, however, is another gig put together by Rob Cast and supported by Coastal Connections; Decosta Boyce is coming to Coast Café. This Soul act is now fronting his own act, having backed the likes of Adele and Beverly Knight. His new album, Electrick Soul, has been released recently and will blow you away. Support provided by Zoe-Beth and Carlo Woods Estevez.

Get yourself down to Coast in October for some great music and vibes!
Connor Burke
Go sober for October? Veganuary? No-yoyo-vember? Those are all very well and good, but I have something up my sleeve that you can do alongside those charity challenges. Something that will benefit Worthing. I call it the Local Culture Soakathlon. It’s so easy these days to grab some culture, like it’s one of those Newsagent Samosas with offputtingly cold peas. But people mostly stick to the big guns, they’ll get the new Beyonce album, but ignore the newest LP from Monzen Nakacho. They’ll make an effort to illegally download the latest Marvel film, but when it comes to hometowngrown horrors they’ll balk at merely having to type the name into Google. I’m guilty of this too, and I feel guilty about it every day. It’s like Worthing Council have given planning permission to erect a Guilt Complex on my brain. So I’m going to, alongside giving up drink, growing a moustache, only eating veg and not playing with my yo yo, start taking in much more local culture this month. A slice a day, of every type of cultural pie. Whether it’s downloading an mp3 of a local band AND putting it on my phone/mp3 player AND listening to it. Or going to a local art gallery, or a museum, one that’s showing local artists. Or reading a book or poem written by a local author. Or going to a gig featuring local bands not a big name. Or drinking a locally brewed beer. Or eating a locally made cake. A lot of us do do this some of the time, some of us do it a lot of the time, but every day for a month would surely be a challenge for even the most rooted local custodians of culture. Most of this stuff can be done from home, on the computer or phone you’re aching to look at whilst reading this article. I’m going to challenge myself every day for a month to take in something local. I recommend you do the same.

Soul-time! PREVIEW: RUBY & THE REVELATORS + THE STASH DEEJAYS FRIDAY 13 OCTOBER 7:30PM, ST PAUL’S WORTHING FANS OF STAX-ERA, NORTHERN & FUNKY SOUL TAKE NOTE! Ruby & The Revelators are a Sussex based, dynamic 5-piece group fronted by the irrepressible Ruby Tiger. Having gained a formidable reputation for their live shows, they have notched up several festivals appearances across the UK, as well as a recent gig at London’s celebrated 100 Club. Ruby’s fans include soul legend Gino Washington, who says “…she ain’t trying to be Janis Joplin…she’s being herself and she has a bitchin’ voice!” Ruby says “Worthing has a thriving arts scene and we’re excited to bring the dirty blues and sassy soul we’re renowned for to this unique evening of live and DJ’d music. St Paul’s is one of the most beautiful venues I’ve set foot in, and it always adds an extra fillip to our performance getting to perform in a cool setting such as this.”
The band’s debut album ‘Walk with Me’ is receiving rave reviews and Blues Matters Magazine describe them as a ‘must see live act on the British Blues Scene’. The group will be joined by local boys The STASH Deejays who will be providing soulful vinyl delights, ranging from Gospel and Rhythm & Blues to Northern Soul and up-tempo Funk. This promises to be an evening of northern soul, blues and funky grooves NOT to be missed in a stunning setting with a brilliant sound system and dance floor! Tickets £7.50, available now from St Paul’s, Chapel Road or seetickets.com/ tour/ruby-the-revelators-the-stash-deejays

THEATRE & THEATRE LISTINGS
Charge—Electrifying & energising dance storms into Worthing 16–17 NOVEMBER, CONNAUGHT THEATRE
When I first moved to Worthing a few years ago, I had never had the pleasure of experiencing dance live on stage; I thought it wasn’t my cup of tea. I’m glad to admit that I was completely incorrect.
Motionhouse brought their breath-taking show ‘Broken’ to the Connaught Theatre in 2015, a production that immersed all of my senses. The house lights faded into darkness and the stage was illuminated with a stunning visual backdrop, the soundtrack filled the room with suspense and when the performers emerged on stage they held the audience’s attention with fast paced feats and gripping choreography. The show represented our fleeting relationship with the earth, and as the natural disasters occurred around us the performers reacted to the projected backdrop, filling the entire stage with a plethora of beautiful dance during the ensuing chaos of the world, mixed with moments of calm, clarification and reflection before the storm. It was the perfect introduction to this amazing genre for me and I’m now completely hooked. Since then I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy many more dance shows in Worthing and we’ve had a great offering, including Balletboyz and the Yasmin Vardimon Dance Company.
October 2017 Shoreham Wordfest – see general listings.
Wed 4 – Sat 7 Oct Brief Encounter , 7.45pm (Sat matinee 2.30pm). Beautiful, funny, heart-wrenching, inventive, version of the timeless love story made famous in the film of the same name. Wick Theatre, Southwick. £11
Last spring Motionhouse came to Worthing with ‘Scattered’, and Here & Now’s review in the April issue described it as “Explosive, powerful, sensitive, descriptive, abstract and perfectly choreographed”. Now this autumn, the company return with their latest instalment. ‘Charge’ is an electrifying new piece that explores human, bio medical, solar and atmospheric energy. They have teamed up with Weta Digital to produce the special effects live on stage… did I mention they are the same company that produced the special effects for all of The Lord Of The Rings and Planet of the Apes films?
The jaw-dropping sets incorporate film projection, interactive expanding screens and LED costumes. Motionhouse have been developing this show for quite some time and I can’t wait to experience this new production, live from the comfort of the Connaught Theatre on 16-17 November. You have to see it to believe it.

CINEMA WORTHING FILM CLUB
Hidden Gems THERE’S NOTHING SO TRICKY ABOUT LIVING SO CLOSE TO BRIGHTON THAN HAVING GOOD CINEMA ON YOUR DOORSTEP.
screening of the most amazing big screen treat 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY by Stanley Kubrick. Book your tickets in advance.
Worthing has two lovely old cinemas. In the past, anything unusual may have had a showing or two at the Connaught Studio, but mostly you had to go to The Duke of York in Brighton.
WFC has a growing membership, you’ll find their film listings on their Facebook page and in Here & Now cinema listings but maybe you are one of those who had not until now heard of WFC?
To set right this cultural deficit, a few filmic locals met up in the Projectionists Bar in the Dome and formed Worthing Film Club (WFC). That was ten years ago to the month this October.
But maybe you remember or have heard tell, of the many ‘On Location’ films the club has organised over the years? Do you remember the film club screening Night At The Museum inside Worthing Museum? Where characters from the film came alive within the glass cabinets? Were you there in the Guildbourne Centre when zombies took over for a midnight screening of Dawn Of The Dead? Or perhaps you donned 1930’s attire and ate a bath bun before the screening of Brief Encounter at Worthing Railway Station?
The club now screens one film a month at The Connaught Studio, usually on the first Monday of the month. During September and October, the club will celebrate its 10th birthday by showing four hidden gems - fantastic, yet, unusual films loved by four current club conveners. And then in October, one huge treat for everyone; a FREE
After ten years and over 140 brilliant films and events, you have the chance to celebrate with WFC with ‘Hidden Gems’ at Coast Cafe des Artistes. Doors at 7.30pm, price £4 or for £2 club members. Membership of WFC is £35 a year, which includes free entry to all monthly screenings for 12 months plus use of their extensive DVD library. You can go along to a screening and join on the night or download and fill in a form at worthingfilmclub.com. There’s also plenty of discussion about WFC films and film in general on their Facebook page.

THE WORTHING BYPASS
This column has not changed your life or your mind
We grandparents are fools – scuttling off at the merest whimper only to reappear when silence has re-emerged promising waffles, train tracks and rose-tinted times. We should have sat through the mayhem, witness to time standing still as the tears, tantrums and interminable noise shatter the senses, obliterate reason and bend time around the little finger of the angel/devil soliciting hell on earth.
“I’d like to hear about what you think about Worthing, about the world, […] about distracting yourself until something better comes along…” Milton’s Paradise Lost – a barnstorming laugh of biblical proportions – came up with the immortal line: ‘The mind is a place of its own, in on itself it can create a heaven of hell or a hell of heaven’ or something to that effect. I forget, I’m getting old. The question is, would it be better to live in a fast moving heaven or a slow-mo hell? Ask the old folks. My lovely parents, in their dotage, had suffered an endless journey back from a holiday in Cornwall and thoughtfully called to bemoan their slow passage. The ever-caring Ubiquitous Hack – apparently incapable of holding one thought singularly without splitting it several ways – remarked that on the one hand that’s fine because you’re both retired and don’t have to worry about work etc. On the other, you’ve got less time left so that must have been very frustrating wasting it on a monster traffic jam on the M5. There’s empathy for you.

| October 2017 | HERE & NOW
Over the past year, the Worthing Bypass – fearing congestion – has attempted to spend time elsewhere, letting the errant children run amok whilst the grown-ups distract themselves with amusing nonsense. Don’t tell me you haven’t been inspired? Literally, don’t, I’m not interested if you haven’t been. If you have, please get in touch. I’d like to hear what you think about Worthing, about the world, about the need for nonsense, about distracting yourself until something better comes along. Which is, after all, the meaning of life. As we celebrate a year of HERE & NOW and simultaneously commiserate the passing of another year, it is worth looking back to the road map set out in the first edition of the Worthing Bypass. Yours truly recommended maintaining a certain amount of stoicism, scepticism and the ultimate component for a happy, meaningless life – epicurean distraction. All of which, coincidentally, are invaluable ingredients for getting through one of these columns unscathed. In a year of global meltdown we contemplated a dystopian future now run as a heritage programme by a stroppy 14-year-old, launching a campaign for a lighthouse on Highdown Hill, holidaying in the far-flung reaches of the parish in Rustington and Shoreham, discovering the lost kingdom of Tarring and the unforgettable and tragically overlooked proposal for donkeys on ice at Steyne Gardens. In the midst of our mindlessness we have somehow maintained a curmudgeonly demeanour and sharpened our scathing edge, slamming the teenage tantrums of the ‘President who should be impeached’, lambasting Southern Fail for their inhuman sacrifice of civil liberties on the altar of selfinterest and still managed to tut-tut at those who don’t quite get it. We’ve even exalted modern art before rubbishing less successful efforts. We have maintained a sense of self-mocking superiority and created a class of our own. Bedraggled and wheeling at life’s great appetite for unending ineptitude we find ourselves a year older, a year direr and less wise than ever we would have expected. The children are still kicking up an unholy fuss but we’ve put the ear

A child’s perception runs in comparative slow motion to our manic fast-forward full-scale assault on old-age, steam rolling us into mindboggled submission before our untimely grave. It is only a perception. If you want to slow down time simply baby sit one of those bad tempered baboons and time will stretch into eternity by creating your own personal Guantanamo Bay.
plugs in and turned our mindful distraction up to eleven. A year or so ago I met a close friend for a birthday drink and he lamented the passing of another year, asking if he looked as old as he felt. Being the same age as me I reached for a positive. Thankfully I found one in the guise of American Gigolo and Buddhist Guru Richard Gere who said that instead of raging at the dying of light we should rejoice at every passing year, knowing that so few before us has reached such lofty heights and take delight in every new day. I would sign off on such a gratingly upbeat note but that would be just plain wrong; far better to delight in the torment of our nearest and dearest as we continue to plague the life out of their existence and find malicious pleasure in dragging on our seemingly eternal presence. A heaven out of hell indeed. Hee-hee.
