FINANCE CORNER
B U S I N E S S F E AT U R E
Increase in Interest So it’s happened again, the Bank of England has increased interest rates by another 0.25%. So what does that actually mean?
increase. Variable rates are also likely to increase.
IF YOU HAVE SAVINGS THEN THE INTEREST RATE you get on these increases slightly. There is of course no guarantee as banks do not have to pass on this increase in rates to savers. Where they do it may even be at a lower increase of 0.15 or 0.20% for example. Check with your own bank.
Naturally the exact amount of interest levied will depend on your exact mortgage balance and if required we can work this out for you. The key question is where will the extra money, the £250 - £750 per annum in our example come from? What will you have to give up? Importantly if it does go up again that’s another lump of money you have to find – are you able to cover this cost?
Where it has the biggest impact is for those of us with debts. If you have credit card debts and they aren’t on a fixed deal then the amount of interest charged is likely to rise. If you have credit cards and can’t clear them you should look to move these to the lowest rate available, or 0% for as long as possible to reduce the interest paid. The biggest impact is likely to be mortgages. If you are on a fixed rate currently, you don’t need to worry. Your payments will remain the same until the end of your SIZE OF INTEREST INCREASE COST PER fixed period. MORTGAGE PER MONTH YEAR If you are on a tracker £250 £100,000 £20.83 rate product £500 £200,000 £41.66 then your £750 £300,000 £62.50 payments will
As a very general guide for a typical 0.25% increase, see figures below left.
MATT SUTTON, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF EMERALD FINANCE, your local award winning financial advisers, is here to answer your financial questions. Got a query? Email on info@emeraldfinance.co.uk
If your mortgage deal is ending in the next 6 months act now. You can secure a product at current rates 6 months in advance of your remortgage date and take advantage of rates whilst they are low. If you are on a tracker or variable rate the chances are that you will be paying over the odds. If the rate rise concerns you or you would like stability and to know what your payments will be going forwards then you can look at securing a fixed rate for 2, 3, 5 or 10 year period. With funding this year from Arts Council England’s Lottery Fund, and WSCC small grants fund, this event, organised by EAST BEACH ARTISTS’ COLLECTIVE, is free and includes entertainment both evenings; light sabre wielding by Jedi knights in training (members of the Worthing branch of the Silver Sabre Academy) and fire dancing by members of Poi Passion, wearing LEDs on their costumes. EAT & DRINK
A Foodies Delight
10
| September 2018 | HERE & NOW
The Worthing Food & Drink Festival returns to Steyne Gardens this September for its seventh year running, so in this issue we’ll be celebrating a few of the things that make Worthing & Adur a dream location for foodies. WHAT CAME FIRST, THE FOOD OR THE FOODIE? There’s been much debate over whether the London and Brighton influence has led to Worthing’s burgeoning, deliciously diverse gastro scene, or whether it was there, waiting to be discovered all along. Really – who cares! – it’s here and no better represented than at the Worthing Food & Drink Festival.
FOOD FESTIVITIES THE WEEKEND OF 15 AND 16 SEPTEMBER are dates to mark into the calendar of any local food and drink lover, when the popular Worthing Food & Drink Festival arrives to spoil our taste buds. Attended this year by Worthing local and MasterChef winner, Kenny Tutt, there’ll be around 50 stalls, local chefs showing off their signature dishes, food and beer tasting, demonstrations and much more. The popularity of the event shows the local desire for great grub – 2017 attracted about 25,000 people.

IN SEARCH OF THE ‘GOOD LIFE’ WE FELT IT WOULD BE A CIVIL INJUSTICE not to highlight the wonderful ‘food growing in the community’ projects. Sunday 30 September sees the third annual Green Dreams community food and greenspaces festival hosting a variety of local community and social enterprise groups, small-scale local food producers and greenspace initiatives. Food and drink stalls at this event in the beautiful barns and grounds of Field Place Manor House include, Vice Puddings with a demonstration kitchen, Gone Global Street Food and Riverside Brewery. FoodPioneers will showcase their seaweed and beehive projects and activities with Breathing Spaces.
SUITABLE FOR VEGANS CATERING TO MASSES is no mean feat, and with the rise in Veganism over the last few years, demand is blooming for more local vegan eateries. First on to the scene in Worthing are the Cactus Kitchen Gals, offering a venue that promises all-vegan good ‘bad’ food (think burgers and fries). Many of our local restaurants and cafes are serving up vegan dishes to meet the diverse wants of the Worthing & Adur area – a quick Google will show you as much! Or, just head straight to one of our lovely advertisers in this issue, they all serve up vegan mains that will not disappoint. We have barely touched the surface here, but it’s clear to see that Worthing & Adur are making strides to becoming admired centres of food and drink, sustainability and community. n

BEACH LIFE
50 Sides of Worthing
Coast Cafe IMAGE: KARINA MANSFIELD
ANT DICKINSON AND BARRIE READING
Thanks to the vision of Stefan Sykes, what for years had been just a fairly run-down ice cream kiosk separating some private beach huts was transformed into a beachfront bar, cafe and recently, music venue.
Here & Now’s editor first met Ant in Feast many years ago, and recalls his cajoling customers into supporting the latest community events before asking, “do you want granary, brown or white on that…”
EVERYONE LOVED IT, and tourists flocked there any sunny day, but then last year Stef announced he was selling, and the town held its breath. Who could possibly bring both a love of Worthing’s unique coastal lifestyle, and the practical skills of running, and even continuing the development that Stef had taken so far?
“WHY WORTHING, ANT?” has been long overdue!
Step forward two residents with their own unique skills, vision and love of Worthing: Ant Dickinson and Barrie Reading. Barrie is the builder who has been helping Stef with the recent expansion and refurb of Coast, and was keen to get more involved. Many readers will know Ant, who, along with his wife Sarah, is owner of the town centre’s tiny but excellent sandwich bar, Feast. Others might recognise him from his time as manager at St Paul’s Arts Centre, where he revolutionised their night-time music events. Here & Now met with Ant and asked, what happens next at Coast? Firstly, we want to keep the essence of Coast. We have a lot of respect and praise for Stef and his vision, and for what he has achieved here. People were actually once scared to walk down here at night, and thanks to Stef, that’s barely even a memory now. Everyone coming in to congratulate us has had their own little list of wants, and it would be impossible to go with every suggestion! But this has been invaluable market research, and now we feel we know what people want. H&N: What changes are coming? A big job will be getting the terrace back in action. It needed a new balustrade to make it safe for small people. It’s a big job, but a statement of intent and it should be open by the end of August. And to cope with the place’s popularity, we’ve built a cold room, so we can serve cold beers out on the beach. Changes like the new Thursday to Sunday DJ nights have been an instant success. Ant shares plans that will make it easier for promoters to put on live shows, and ideas for the menu. We are in Feast as we talk, Sarah calls over from the kitchen “How about a
log burner for the long winter nights?”
Twitter @mikepailthorpe
Why Worthing?
We were living in London, thinking of moving, and friends Andy and Sarah who now run the Crabshack invited me down for a game of golf. After a great game up at Hill Barn, on top of the hill, the town spread out below us, and the sun glistening on the sea: I was smitten.
When were you happiest?
On our wedding day, which was also the day of the classic 90s Euro Football match between England and Scotland when Gazza scored that great goal and the fun with the water bottles.
Which piece of music changed your life?
At school, I was in the Prog gang, but then I heard the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever - on cassette. Disco blew me away and changed everything!
Who would you like to invite to rave with on Worthing Beach? I’d ask all the people I used to rave with in the early 90s, when it really was raving - who better?
What single thing would most improve Worthing?
Well, for planning the future of the town, how about assembling a truly representative diverse advisory panel of about 100 people, from young to old, property owners to renters to the homeless, who actually live here, rather than commute in for work, and to ask them about what’s needed?
What would you donate to Worthing Museum?
Maybe my red walkman, but actually my favourite piece of art by the truly incredible Paul Aroe Barlow. He’s a genius.
What was the last event you paid to attend in Worthing? Craig Charles at the Southern Pavilion!

LITERARY LOCAL
All in the Downs
How about this weather! My favourite thing to do in summer is to curl up with a drink full of ice and a book full of fiction very appealing considering the heatwave we’ve been having! WHETHER YOU PREFER THE COOLER SEASONS, or lap up the sun, there’s always something going on in and around Worthing to get your literary teeth into. Without further ado, I give you September!
15 Sept If you’ve been joining the local libraries in making mischief for the Summer Reading Challenge, then this is your deadline! It’s easy to get distracted by the sun, the ice cream, the fun days out, the ice cream, the ice cream… So, with half the month available, there’s still time to get involved! Free.
19 Sept, 7pm This month, City Books presents Shirley Collins MBE, author and famous folk singer. Her new memoir, All in the Downs, gives us a window into an amazing life. Native to Sussex, Shirley explores not just the history of English folklore and music but also how it influenced her life and career. Shoreham Ropetackle Centre, £8.
20 to 22 Sept If you like your stage stories more mysterious, then why not go straight to one of the best sleuths in town? In this new stage adaptation, the telling
of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes: The Sign of Four should certainly mystify and amaze! Connaught Theatre, Tickets from £19.50.
29 to 30 Sept Daytime performances. One for adults and children alike, Guess How Much I Love You is a story on stage using puppetry, live music and interactive play. From the producers who brought you James and the Giant Peach and The Quite Remarkable Adventures of the Owl and the Pussycat, this promises to be a magical experience! Connaught Theatre, £13.50
SEPTEMBER WORDFEST Shoreham Wordfest is back for the whole of September (seriously, a whole month, and some of October so stay tuned for that bit in the next issue!). Workshops, talks and all things literary will be held in different venues around the area, so we can all but guarantee that there’s something for everyone. From poetry and creative writing workshops, to author talks and live productions, there are far too many to list! Check out the website (www. shorehamwordfest.com) to find the downloadable brochure with all the info. Various venues and prices.
AND FINALLY... THE BOOK FAIRY I’ve heard rumours that a certain local Book Fairy has been slacking in efforts due to the wonderful weather (and too much ice cream). We don’t tell them off of course, but if there are any budding fairies out there who like donating free books around the local area, please get in touch with editorial@hereandnowmag. co.uk – we love hearing the stories and seeing the pictures! n

Try Something New 10 KEYS TO HAPPIER LIVING
No.5
TRYING OUT
Favourite Pavements Based on the latest research, the national movement Action for Happiness has identified 10 Keys to Happier Living. The 5th is Trying out. WE ALL KNOW THE SAYING ‘use it or lose it’, and it really is true. Evidence shows that trying out new things and continuing to learn new skills helps us improve our wellbeing and stay mentally healthy and alert as we grow older. Unfortunately many of us associate learning with difficulty, or memories of ‘getting it wrong’ at school. But adult learning doesn’t have to mean formal qualifications – in fact, just being curious about something you’re interested in, or trying something new out for fun, is likely to make you happier and feel more fulfilled. Start with just ‘doing something different’, like taking an alternative route to work or trying a new food. Then maybe take it a step further and learn a new skill, like singing in a choir, fixing a bike or creative writing. There are a huge range of classes on offer in Worthing e.g. at community centres, colleges, Aspire Sussex. Why not book a taster session today!
To find out more, come along to the Action for Happiness Worthing monthly meet-up group – next one Tues 11 September, 7-9pm at the lovely Coast café. More info at: facebook.com/ actionforhappinessinworthing n

A SAUNTER THROUGH THE POET’S DISTRICT
1. It’s hot. Really really hot. I’m ambling along under the shade of the
trees in Victoria Park contemplating the Emergency Water Supply that was installed here during the ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign in World War II. I can’t help but imagine having a paddle in the sunken ‘pond’. I’ve seen a picture of the park then all dug over for planting. Today it looks very different with so much verdant grass. A group are laying out party food under canvas, while a couple discuss money and Justin Bieber in the shadow of the natural canopy.
2. At the parks south west corner I emerge into the Poet’s District.
I head south down Shakespeare Road where due to my scribbling I’m mistaken for “the lady from Fox and Sons”. I’m flattered. Turning right down Manor Road I see a young squirrel who’s enjoying scampering about one of the enormous trees by the roadside. Many of the houses down here were built at the turn of the century.
3. I cross over the intersecting Heene Road and follow the spire of St Botoloph’s Church, sticking up out of the strikingly blue skyline. Outside the church sits a sofa. I resist the urge to take a nap. To the east of the early English Gothic-style building are the remains of a 13th century church which once stood here.
4. Continuing along Manor Road, a couple of white butterflies dance
across my path towards Heene Cemetery. Open since 1873 it is a haven for wildlife. Volunteers work here Saturday and Tuesday afternoons to maintain this quiet sanctuary.
5. Opposite the graveyard I take St Michael’s Road to Heene
Community Centre. Here I pop in for a delicious Totes Tropical Smoothie. There’s a range of splendid eats at Café One 22, including impressive cakes and scones. The centre is a hub of activity, including Mexican dominoes and Lego Club. My eye is drawn to a notice on the board for learning to fight with LED sabres. A fine contemplation as I restore myself amongst the colourful potted plants and flags. n

LOCAL SPORT
The Time is Now It’s the time of year when everyone seems to be running about – literally.
PARENTS ARE TRYING TO CRAM as much as they can into the summer holidays whilst the children are thrust into as many school holiday clubs as possible in an attempt for them to expend some of the high-levels of energy they tend to display on a day to day basis – well, mine do anyway… We know how easy it is to let exercise slide as we age, and that we can simply get into bad habits; sport may not be as easy as it used to be and we may worry that it will take longer to recover. However, there are many local programmes and schemes out there which
encourage adults to keep active which will, in turn, help combat age-related disease, improve your mood and give you new interests. This includes the Get Active £10 Challenge; and the Get Active and the Play Street Schemes which are both led by Adur & Worthing Council. You can also find plenty of sports related activities to get involved with throughout this issue. Get out of your head and into your body and get moving. The time is now. n

THOMAS H GREEN - MUSICAL TIME MACHINE
The Life and Times of Pete Fij This month the Time Machine takes a swerve and explores the life of a musician who’s been resident in Worthing for 16 years. His story doesn’t all concern Worthing but he’s one of ours so we’re going to celebrate him – Pete Fij.

| September 2018 | HERE & NOW
HE WAS, AFTER ALL, FOR A BRIEF SPELL in the spring of 1992, the frontman of Britain’s hottest guitar band. He took that ride until it crashed and has, more recently, seen critical acclaim and his highest profile since, working as a duo with Terry Bickers (of The House of Love and
FOR A BRIEF SPELL IN 1992 HE WAS FRONTMAN OF BRITAIN’S HOTTEST GUITAR BAND
Levitation). But let’s hop back to the start. Born Peter Fijalkowski to Polish parents, he had a happy childhood in Guildford. The family was artistically inclined but not especially musical. It was his only brother Krzyz, seven years older, who upped the ante, sending home cassette compilations from university featuring Echo & the Bunnymen, The Psychedelic Furs et al. Something of an outsider, Fij didn’t enjoy school but flourished at Sixth Form College in Godalming.
“I found the delights of buying odd-sized suits in Oxfam,” he recalls, “going round looking like a cross between David Byrne and Robert Smith.” He headed to Warwick University to study film theory but soon decided he wanted to be in a band and initially picked up a bass
“because I thought it might be 33% easier to play than a guitar”. He joined a band, Bubblegum Flesh, who soon changed their name to The Fuzzyfelts.
“We were rubbish,” he says, “but luckily everyone else was equally rubbish. We were twee and punk at same time. People shouted abuse and we just stared them out.”
The latter half of the Eighties was a prime time for wilfully lo-fi indie bands and The Fuzzyfelts developed a small following. One holiday Pete wrote a song on his brother’s four-track and used it as the basis for a new band in which he played guitar and sang, The Candy Thieves.
“The House of Love were a massive influence,” he says, “I wanted to sound like [their breakthrough tune] ‘Destroy the Heart’.” There was a thriving band scene in Coventry with groups being signed left, right and centre. The competition between them was inspiring. They learnt off each other, sending out demos, playing London, wooing the then-all important music press.
“Although the personnel and sets were the same, we decided to con record labels into thinking we were a new band by changing our name,” Fij remembers, “Almost straight away we received attention, including from labels who’d already passed on us.” The new name was Adorable. Their indie pop-rock thrived amid the popular shoegaze movement whilst not being part of it, and they scraped onto the bottom of an NME unsigned showcase, headlined by PJ Harvey, also featuring Suede on the bill.
“We just performed our arses off - one of best gigs we ever did,” recollects Fij. “Coming offstage I said that if we didn’t get signed then, we never would: we absolutely nailed it.”
PICTURE: ADORABLE
The next day their manager was inundated with offers but only two labels interested them; Food who’d just signed Blur and Jesus Jones - and Creation. The latter, overseen by Alan McGee, who’d later sign Oasis, was the definitive ‘80s indie mecca, with a roster including My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Ride.
“Alan McGee and I never really hit it off,” Fij recalls, “but he had an incredible enthusiasm for music. Creation worked out of ramshackle offices in an untrendy part of east London above a sweatshop, things torn out of NME and stuck on walls with Blu Tack. I had a real go at him when we first met as he’d just dropped My Bloody Valentine and done it by phone. I made him promise that if were ever dropped, he’d do it face-to-face.”
Initially things looked good. Adorable signed Creation’s biggest ever deal. Their debut single, ‘Sunshine Smile’, performed well in the indie charts, indicating a solid future. They toured the world and, at their peak, were headlining 800 capacity venues as far afield as California, Australia and Japan. However, there was a backlash almost from the start…
“We wanted to be pop stars,” says Fij, “We wanted the glamour back in pop, but when Wil [Stephen Williams] and I did those early interviews and were perceived as arrogant. Two years later Oasis

had that kind of swagger and it was fine but we were out of step with the times. From then on, we got such a kicking in the press.” Fij is keen to emphasise that multiple factors played their part in Adorable’s slow decline. He states that, although they didn’t know it then, their first few months were their peak and the rest was downhill. In late 1994, after two albums, the band fell apart and Fij retreated to a new base of Brighton and “a year-long state of shock, a daze”. Alan McGee never did drop them face-to-face either. Fij became a second hand book dealer (his mum had worked in a book shop) while dabbling with a pop project, Casino, featuring the writer Siân Pattenden, before deciding to launch a new band, Polak, with his brother. They signed to One Little Indian and made a couple of albums but members were starting to settle down with jobs and families, and it petered out in the new century. Fij recorded a solo album but never did anything with it, leaving it in a drawer for years. Then in 2009 he was invited to play the Brighton Fringe and realised that “if I didn’t do the gig I’d never do music again.” He invited Terry Bickers who he knew vaguely, to join him, which had a certain symmetry since the guitarist’s work with The House of Love had kickstarted Fij’s own career. Their collaboration was a success and they made their debut in the top room of Worthing’s Dome cinema to 40 people. From there on the Pete Fij/Terry Bickers project has blossomed, resulting in two lovely albums of poetic, heartworn acoustica which the duo occasionally tour successfully. It leaves Fij in a good place, with a portfolio career, also working at his beloved Shelley Care Home (recently rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission), running the Shoreham Flyover Car Boot Sale, and putting on his ever-busy Never Stop nights of alt/indie ‘80s music. The title of the latter might be his motto. Never stop, indeed. Adorable’s first album ‘Against Perfection’ has been re-released in July on vinyl by Music on Vinyl. Pete Fij / Terry Bickers 2017 album ‘We Are Millionaires’ will be released on vinyl on Dec 11th 2018 on the Broadcast Recording Label. n

For a healthy mixture of big band and comedy material, The Crooners follows the story of three very British gentlemen who exhume the characteristics of a crooner; suave, self-assured and stylish. This rip-roaring comedy-musical features the outstanding and uncompromising live, on stage musicianship of a 9-piece band performing songs from Frank Sinatra to Sammy Davis JR, and you can experience this magnificent concert at the Pavilion Theatre on 28 September. I have to admit, I love the classic sounds of Ol’ Blue Eyes on my record player at home, such a magical era of music. Looking ahead to the autumn, we welcome the likes of Russell Watson, The Manfreds and Georgie Fame, The Illegal Eagles, The Drifters, Eddi Reader, Blake, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain and even The Osmonds! We also have toe-tapping tributes to The Beatles, George Michael, Abba and Queen. That’s music to my ears. n

Worthing’s First Theatre Trail I am so thrilled to be involved in Worthing’s first Theatre Trail. WORTHING IS EMERGING AS A HUB for creative talent and to have a platform to showcase the work of local actors makes this a really exciting time for us as a town. It has been masterminded by Gary and Sue Krost and the enthusiasm and excitement behind it has been contagious. As an actor who usually has to go out to Brighton to do the majority of my stage work it’s a joy to be bringing it home alongside some of Worthing’s enormously talented theatre folk.
This is an ambitious venture and we hope we can really put Worthing on the map. There are already some amazing music venues here and it has a fantastic buzz about it - but by doing our theatre trail we are hoping to draw in audiences from across Sussex and share our many and varied talents. n

New places are popping up in Worthing all of the time: bars, restaurants, hundreds of upcycled item shops for some reason. BUT AS MUCH AS I FEEL WE SHOULD start to treasure these new places, I also feel that we need to remember the history of the place we’re living in, and I don’t mean ancient history either, I mean the people’s history. We should remember the pubs where people had their first kiss that have since closed down, the Teville Gates where people smoked their first ridiculous cigarettes, the Beach Parties where people drank their first back of the cupboard cocktails. These places, and these stories are disappearing, albeit being replaced with new memories and stories. The Royal Oak, where many of my formative experiences (my second ever live performance, my first ever barring) happened, is changing into a new pub, but I want to keep my memories safe, and I have an idea how.
The People’s Walking Tour of Worthing EVERYONE WHO FANCIES IT, can record a story about a place in Worthing. We start from when you get off the train, because I once did a wee on some signs directly after getting off the train, and the Grand Victoria certainly holds a few stories. Everyone who has a story about any place in Worthing, no matter how big or small, can record their tale. We then stitch together all the stories in order of direction, going towards the beach. This will be offered up as a download for any visitors to Worthing, or even residents who want to get to know their fellow Worthingites a bit better. If two people have a story about the same place, the listener is offered a choice, as well as a choice of directions to travel towards the beach in.

THE WORTHING BYPASS
This Column will not Change your Life Musing on all that kafuffle over frog sanctuaries and newt nesting with the Arundel bypass protests to the distant west, I couldn’t help but think we’ve got the rough end of the stick.
IT ALWAYS MAKES ME FEEL LIKE I’M ARRIVING ON HOLIDAY, EVEN AFTER I’VE BEEN ON HOLIDAY, WHICH FOR ME IS THE BEST THING ABOUT WORTHING.
WE HAVE NO SACRED TOAD RESERVES or native geese festivals with which to brow beat nasty ‘progressives’ seeking to railroad us with a concrete road to hell (or Chichester). They’ve got all the castles, cathedrals and high-tea cafes you could ask for, and plenty more you wouldn’t, especially after dark (I’ll come to that). I even imagine a wittier nemesis – the Utopian Track – penning hilarious homilies for his Arundel Bypass column in the celebrated There & Then magazine, giving weekly recitals in a riverside pub whilst the yokels chant acclaim and hoist their froghead sticks in some form of cultist ritual straight out of The Wicker Man (hence the need for a bypass – stay after sundown and you’ll leave without your eyebrows).
Come to think of it, I’ve spent several a sunny afternoon trundling around the castle gardens, appreciating the frivolity of the ultraviolent jousting re-enactments as children play nicely by shooting each other with much more realistic imaginary weapons of mass destruction, or boring myself silly at the wetlands sanctuary (I’m no fan of ducks) but never, ever stayed after dark. You just don’t. It’s kind of an unspoken given. Certainly explains why the A27 gets so busy at rush hour – a mass exodus before the witching hour. I say all this out of disgust that our feted bypass gets so little juicy press coverage. Ok, that’s largely because they’ve given up trying but even so, I wouldn’t mind us fighting over protecting an ancient swan pond or setting up a dung beetle foundation for the protection of under-privileged termites.
That was until I discovered – through the highly-honed journalistic instinct of waiting until a nugget of information lands in my lap – that Long Furlong was in fact the first Worthing bypass rerouting Londonbound traffic to avoid the Sainsburys/B&Q chaos at Lyons Farm (or ye olden times equivalent – a farm). Now it just dodges the A24 but what a splendour it is. Every time we drive from the north I get a tingle of excitement as we round the hill where one can spot the sea on a clear day and enjoy the sweeping vista of cornfields to the right, precariously situated sheep on the steep incline to the left and, if you’re a passenger, the opportunity to turn around and see the rolling peaks and troughs of the South Downs behind you. It always makes me feel like I’m arriving on holiday, even after I’ve been on holiday, which for me is the best thing about Worthing: I live on holiday. Unlike the poor patrons of Arundel who live in a gothic nightmare fairy tale, guarded by a phalanx of barking mad killer ducks. I also enjoy rolling up from the other end on foot, passing through Patcham village and rising onto the clearing before entering Clapham woods. The views are sensational, occasionally ruined by a cluster of moody cows, I grant you. I have nothing against cows, they’re not annoying like ducks, but they do present their own particular brand of frustration: they’re deadly dangerous. Joust with these grumpy pumpkins and you’ll end up a crumpled footnote in a legendary ditty recited by that dullard pub bore over in the next valley but one. Best avoid the moo-monsters altogether lest your immortal soul be trapped in a rival town’s mocking folk lore. I do love Long Furlong though. It trumps most roads in Britain for magnificent views and one has to admit, is ideal for smoother transit to London from the west. Opposition to most bypasses miss the point though, if you get my drift. Protestors attacking the infamous one between us and Chi got fixated on preserving creepy crawlies and making sure the deserted swamplands stay wet. We offer so much more… just take a look at our Here & Now listings. And what’s more you can stay after dark… we rise to brilliance in the dark (around 9pm) and stay like that all night, with the Worthing Light Festival on Friday 14 and Sat 15 September, on the beach opposite East Beach Studios. So there you have it, tell the rellies and pallies to visit Worthing but do come via Long Furlong if they’re able. Might as well abuse the bypass to visit Worthing. n
