• Captain William Edwardson navigated the passage from Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay determining that Gre Sandy Peninsula was an Island

• A new name was given to the island in 1836 after the survivors of a shipwreck of the Stirling Castle found their way ashore and the death for Captain J. Fraser

Fraser Island renamed K’gari (”Gurri”)

Celebrated at a ceremony with Butchulla representatives and Elders on K’gari on 19th September 2021 after a long campaign by Butchulla people, The World Heritage Area within Great Sandy National Park, which is centred on Fraser Island, along with the surrounding waters and parts of the nearby mainland has been renamed K'gari, pronounced "Gurri". Which means paradise, the original Butchulla people’s name for the island. Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation Chairperson Jade Gould said her people welcome the name change of the world heritage area to K’gari. “The Butchulla people have been campaigning for years to change the name,” Ms Gould said. “The name Fraser Island is a tribute to Eliza Fraser—a woman whose narrative directly lead to the massacre and dispossession of the Butchulla people. A word meaning paradise in Butchulla language is a much more fitting name for such an iconic place.”

Access the Island via River Heads

When coming from the south through Maryborough, turn at the roundabout on Hervey Bay - Maryborough road onto Booral road & follow the signs to River Heads. When coming from the north, leave Howard along the Howard - Torbanlea road to the roundabout, then turn onto Booral road & follow signs to River Heads. High clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles are required as the island consists entirely of sand All-wheel-drive vehicles and caravans are not recommended Vehicle access is by barge (ferry) only. QPWS vehicle access and camping permits are required before you enter

I fly 7000 miles non stop

Black-tailed godwit

- they are the only birds known to fly more than 7,000 miles nonstop with no breaks for water or sleep. They leave Alaska in October & head straight for the Ocean. Though they are land birds, and cannot fish or rest on the sea. Many of them are young, and have never done this before. No other bird can do what they do.

Prevent shorebird disturbance

Disturbance is any action that interrupts the breeding, feeding or resting of shorebirds. You can prevent shorebird disturbance by keeping domestic animals under control and well away from shorebirds. Every time shorebirds are forced to take flight, they burn vital energy Avoid driving or operating all forms of vehicles, vessels and recreational devices near shorebirds. Imagine a shorebird confronting a kite surfer for the first time. Don't drive, set up camp or a simple stroll through a roost site above the high-water mark — you'll destroy shorebird nests. If fishing from a sandbar, choose the opposite end to where the birds are gathered. By disturbing shorebirds we reduce their survival prospects. It is an offence to cause disturbance to shorebirds.

Respect & care

Traditional owners the Butchulla people, have a long and ongoing relationship with K’gari (Fraser Island). In order to acknowledge the important connection to country of the Butchulla people, the Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing’s (NPRSR) and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) urges visitors to treat the country they are travelling through with respect and care. Butchulla people want their messages of care and respect for the land to reach all people visiting the island. As visitors explore K'gari (Fraser Island), they will see signs carrying a ‘welcome to country’ message from the Butchulla

We are your home away from home on K'gari (Fraser Island) Our unique 2 & 3 bedroom houses are a short walk from 75 Mile Beach

Award winning LARC tours

Tourism business 1770 LARC! Tours has achieved two significant milestones in 2022. Midyear , the amphibious day tour business proudly reached 20 years of Eco Tourism Australia certification. Local owner & operator Neil Mergard was in fact the first tourism business in Central QLD to become eco certified back in 2002 and he is very proud of the ongoing commitment his business and the 1770 LARC! Tours’ team members continue to effect.

The second marvellous milestone is that for two successive years 1770 LARC! Tours has won Bronze in the ‘Tour and Transport Operators’ category at the Queensland Tourism Awards. The category of ‘Tour and Transport Operators’ is one of the most hotly contested of the state awards and the whole 1770 LARC!

Tours team are ecstatic with winning Bronze two years in a row . Neil was on hand at the recent Awards ceremony to personally collect the accolade, and in his usual enthusiastic nature, Neil said “I’m so proud of the whole LARC team and their dedication to business excellence. Receiving this Award two years in a row recognises their consistency and passion.

“Plus, there are thousands of guests we are also very appreciative of – ever since the business was established in May 1994, we’ve been supported by guest referrals, so keep on LARCing!” MORE: Amber Rodgers, marketing manager; Email: amber@1770larctours.com.au Ph: 0409 983 702.

WHY NOT INDULGE YOURSELF IN ONE OF THESE RELAXING THERAPIES WHILE ON YOUR HOLIDAY?

Benets of Detoxication

Periodic detoxication can provide great benets to the body when done correctly, it is not something we should be doing every now and then: it is something that the body in fact does naturally on a daily basis. We nd ourselves in a very polluted world, the air, water and soil are contaminated and humans should avoid. Not only are we absorbing toxins from our outside environments, but our bodies also naturally produce toxins as by-products of metabolism. The body consists of many organs that play a vital part in the detoxication system. Keeping them healthy and working well is important. The liver plays a huge role in detoxication. It gathers toxic substances from the blood and recycles them into bile which is later excreted through stool. To keep your liver functioning optimally, drink lemon water rst thing in the morning on an empty stomach, consume foods high in B vitamins, antioxidants and bre (berries, mushrooms, chickpeas, carrots, green bitters) and reduce your alcohol intake. The kidneys are resilient detoxiers. They excrete toxins through urine, and when they do not function well, it can lead to a fatal build-up of toxins in the blood. Having a diet that is low in simple carbs, saturated fats and salt will prevent diseases that cause kidney damage. They can be further supported by foods that are high in antioxidants like cranberries, red bell peppers and cabbage. Drink plenty of water to aid the ushing out of toxins and protect the urinary tract from infection. If you keep your toxic load at a minimum, it lowers the burden on these organs.

Before you clear

prickly undergrowth is required

Welcoming entrance gardens beside Boat Harbour Drive, immaculate mowed parks and play grounds, are a credit to all involved, but special effort should be made to provide suitable habitat where our beautiful little birds such as Fairywrens, Finches and Scrubwrens etc, could be enjoyed also. They all require prickly, tangled undergrowth, (such as Lantana), for protection from introduced cats, foxes and their other natural predators. Also well suitable grasses for seed for at least three species of Finch. So property owners & council employees, before you slash, mow or spray any area that is not required as a lawn or garden, just visualise how interesting it could be to have a patch, that may look just a little untidy to some people, but will be suitable for little birds to hide, nest and feed in. You can place a sign displaying "left for Wildlife" to show it is a planned section – not just an untidy area. Maybe a bird-bath nearby where you can expect to see little birds safely drink and bathe. Wonderful relaxation without a lot of maintenance! Hervey Bay is a noted bird-watch area and visitors come from around the world and interstate just to see them. You will feel good to know you have done your bit. Birdwatchers meet regularly. Howard is situated beside the Bruce Highway, about 34km north west of Hervey Bay and 20km north of Maryborough. William Howard travelled through the area in 1857 to go on and discover the rich Isis scrub (Childers). He later owned mining leases in the area. At one stage about 25% of Queensland coal was raised in the district. Citrus growing soon took over from timber getting as the district's second industry after coal. Lenthalls Dam off the Bruce Highway near Howard is a fishing and boating paradise. It's a great place for the whole family and worthwhile if you are keen on freshwater fishing. A fishing permit is required. The area which has Picnic Races are a must to see annually in October. The 6 furlong race track at Torbanlea was first created in 1890 as a half mile track that had no rails, dodging trees and stumps along the way. The local climate recognised as Australia's most liveable.

The early times in Maryborough

Evidence of human inhabitation of the Maryborough region stretches back to at least 6,000 years ago. The Gubbi Gubbi (Kabi Kabi) & Batjala (Butchulla) people were the original inhabitants of the region. Gubbi were described as an inland tribe of the Wide Bay–Burnett area. The Batjala occupied the more coastal regions including K’gari (Fraser Island). In 1842, Andrew Petrie & Henry Stuart Russell sailed up the river known to the Gubbi as the Monoboola (now the Mary River) looking for land and timber to exploit. Until 1842, little was known about the Maryborough region. Cook, Flinders & Oxley had charted the coastline, but the arrival of Edgar T. Aldridge & his party in 1848 was the catalyst for the rapid growth of a village, a port for wool &other primary produce, and the establishment of a sawmill on the northern bank of the Mary River. Early Maryborough economy was centred around livestock farming, logging of the bunya pine forests, and the boiling down of animal carcasses to make tallow. In the late 1850's the soil along the Mary River was deemed ideal for the cultivation of sugarcane and in 1859 E. T. Aldridge was able to grow & produce a world-class experimental crop. From the 1840's to well after 1900, Maryborough & Sydney were the only two ports on Australia's east coast permitted to accept and process immigrants. More than 30,000 people - Scots, Danes, Germans, Kanakas (Fiji and Vanuatu islanders) & others, passed through Maryborough on their way to a new life. The whole of Maryborough's wharf precinct is a cultural treasure. Ghosts from the 19th Century seem to frequent the Customs House Hotel, in Maryborough's Wharf Street. Strange things have been known to happen there all the time, taps get mysteriously turned on, or you'll hear noises on the staircase in the middle of the night.

Childers, a rural town, is 60 km west of Hervey Bay and on the Bruce Highway north-west of Maryborough. There are 23 buildings in Churchill Street that are listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. The towns Visitor Centre is located in the Palace Building which was destroyed by a fire in 2000 and subsequently rebuilt in honour of the 15 backpackers who died in the fire upstairs. A single A4 Heritage walk sheet which combines a map of the town (most of the historic buildings are located on Churchill Street) is available to pick up & upstairs is an Art Gallery. Trees that line the main street or Bruce Hwy are Brazilian Leopard Trees. As a National Trust Town, it provides opportunities for visitors to explore the regions interesting past. Towing safety tips

First, make sure you have a tow bar that is up to the job! If you can afford it, it's worth paying for a professional installation. Make sure you're familiar with any laws that apply, especially if you are travelling abroad. In particular, make sure you know the speed limits. In some countries you need a separate warning light fitted in the car to show that the caravan direction indicator lights are working.

* Coping with the load - are the engine, brakes, tyres and suspension up to the job?

* Trailer or tow bar weights - check your cars handbook for the maximum weights allowed

* Rear view - make sure you can see behind the caravan using the cars mirrors. Extending side mirrors can be fitted to most cars

* Check tyre pressures - unless you are towing a light, unladen trailer, the car tyres should be inflated to full load pressures (check your cars handbook). Check the caravan tyre pressures are correct too

* Headlight set up - check the aim with the caravan attached, and have it adjusted if necessary. Many cars these days have an adjuster on the dashboard.

* Caravan lights - the extra load on the flasher circuit may cause the indicators to flash too slowly, so you may need a heavy duty flasher unit. Check brake, side and number plate lights

* Loading the caravan - refer to the manufacturers recommendations. As a general rule, distribute the weight with the heaviest items as near as possible to the caravan axle. Secure all heavy items so they can't move Car manufacturers usually specify an optimum noseweight for a caravan when loaded. If necessary, move the load to get as close as possible to the recommended noseweight and do not exceed it

* Engine - don't put unnecessary strain on the engine by trying to tow an unsuitably heavy load. The extra load on an engine when towing may mean that the cooling system is no longer adequate - you may be able to have modified cooling system components (a larger radiator, etc ) fitted to cope with this problem if you tow regularly

* Suspension - towing puts extra strain on a cars suspension components and can affect the handling of a car. Heavy duty rear suspension components are available for most cars to enable to cope with towing

* Reversing - there are some very simple rules to follow. It may seem to be a difficult concept to grasp at first, but instead of being able to turn your car steering wheel in the direction that you want your trailer/caravan to go, you must turn it in the opposite direction. It might take a little time to master this technique, especially when reversing round a corner When reversing in a straight line, the easiest way to remember what to do is to steer towards the towing mirror in which the trailer or caravan appears

Fast-chargers roll out

Following a successful pilot project in Brisbane, Ampol has struck a landmark deal with publicly owned Yurika to install 34 fast-chargers across the nation.

Building on the Palaszczuk Government's Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan, this agreement will support the deployment of AmpCharge EV charging stations across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia. Queensland's Minister for Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen Mick de Brenni said “Innovations in electric vehicle performance and lifecycle costs have meant more Queenslanders are choosing to make the switch, with over 16,000 electric vehicles now on our roads, “This rst order is for design, construction and commissioning services for EV chargers and solar systems across an initial number of service station sites located across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia. “Through the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan, we can capture so much more of Queensland's abundance of natural sun, wind and water to power the industries, the homes, and the transport eets of tomorrow,” he said. Ampol Group Chief Financial Ofcer Greg Barnes said that through AmpCharge, Ampol were building a national

electric vehicle charging network that will help minimise range anxiety and support the uptake of EVs across Australia. “In 2022 we launched our rst AmpCharge site in Queensland at Carseldine and this partnership with Yurika continues momentum on our ongoing rollout,” Mr Barnes said. “We are pleased to continue to work as a partner of the Queensland Government as we continue to execute our strategy for energy transition,” he said.

As part of the agreement, Yurika will mobilise teams across Queensland. The rst Queensland sites that will see fastchargers roll out are Morningside, Caboolture, Tingalpa, Sippy Downs, Birtinya, Reedy Creek.

Yurika has also been selected to provide metering services nationally as Ampol ramps up its Future Energy and Decarbonisation Strategy, including to its emerging energy retailing offer.

Yurika has supported EV uptake since 2017 when it invested in and built its rst fast charging stations on the Queensland Electric Super-Highway (QESH), with Yurika and Queensland Transport and Main Roads partnership recently renewed for stage 3 of the QESH. This forms part of Ampol's Addressing Blackspots Fast Charging project, supported by ARENA no-reply@statements.qld.gov.au

Fraser Coast vacancy rates

remain tight with fewer options for renters

The June Quarter 2022, REIQ’s Residential Vacancy Report showed the vast majority of Queensland continues to endure incredibly tight and relatively at vacancy rates, well below one percent, a far cry from a healthy 2.6 – 3.5 percent range. Brisbane Local Government Area (LGA) vacancies dropped to a new low of just 0.8 percent with fewer options for renters than ever before. However, interestingly some positive shifts were observed in coastal holiday markets such as Noosa (1.1%), Caloundra Coast (0.9%), and Sunshine Coast Statistical Division (SD) (0.8%) – all easing by 0.3 percent or more towards a slightly healthier rate. Other tourism centres maintained fairly steady vacancy rates over the quarter with slight increases restricted to 0.1 percent in Gold Coast (0.5%), Sunshine Coast LGA (0.6%), Maroochy Coast (0.5%), Hinterland

(0.5%), and the Whitsundays (0.8%). Hervey Bay (0.6%) took a small step backwards retracting 0.2 percent, while Fraser Coast (0.5%), Bundaberg (0.4%), and Cairns (0.5%) held rock steady over the quarter. In the regions, Burdekin in North Queensland had the most notable drop, halving to 0.5 percent. Maryborough which stayed put at 0.2 percent after two years of virtually no vacancies. The neighbouring regions of Gympie and South Burnett both rose slightly to 0.3 percent and have hovered around this barely-above-zero mark over the last four quarters. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said quarter after quarter of drastically low vacancy rates were taking their toll on Queensland. “Queenslanders have been enduring these wafer-thin vacancy rates for some time now and these conditions are understandably having both social and economic ramications,”

Ms Mercorella said. “Real estate agents in regional parts of Queensland have reported that incredibly tight vacancy rates are making it tough for hospital workers, teaching staff, and students to nd a place to live in proximity to their essential work or study

“These people bring skills and spending to the regions, all contributing to the economic prosperity and social fabric of the area, and it’s a truly concerning loss to these communities when they simply cannot house them. “What we need now is creative solutions to breathe the life back into our atlining vacancy rates and a genuine long-term plan for housing our population now and into the future.”

“Chances are that for every property, there are multitudes of applicants who would make perfect tenants – however, the sad reality is that only one application for each property can be approved, and people are missing out simply because it’s so competitive,” she said.
