WELCOME HOME
Welcome to Single Carrot Theatre’s new and permanent home in Baltimore. Thank you for joining the Carrot family for the special occasion of our Grand Opening on 2600 N. Howard Street. I could not be more thrilled to have you here tonight for this wonderful celebration of the arts and theatre in the greatest city in America, Bawlmer. Whether you’ve been with the Carrots from our very first season, or The Flu Season is your first production with us, I encourage you to take a moment and look around – at our new home, and at all of Baltimore. Look at the amazing impact the arts are having here. Now Single Carrot has walls around us and a roof above our heads – together they form a true platform from which to reach more audiences and young artists. When I first arrived in Baltimore with other Carrots in 2007, the number one question was always, “Why Baltimore?” The answer is simple: Why would we go anywhere else? We are home.
Cheers!
ELLIOTT RAUH Co-Founding Ensemble Member, Managing Director
Artistic Director's Note You are here tonight to celebrate with us: to celebrate Single Carrot Theatre’s move to our permanent home in a brand new, beautiful space. We are overjoyed to be here, grateful for your presence, and thrilled to offer you a first look at our very first production on Howard Street: Will Eno’s The Flu Season. I imagine as you sit and watch the show tonight, the reasoning behind our decision to open our theatre with this piece may seem…well…difficult to discern. It is not exactly celebratory. But I am here to tell you that our production of The Flu Season is the best piece possible to share with you tonight, and here’s why: To begin with, The Flu Season is a quintessential SCT show—a great example of the kind of art we are driven to make. As you will soon see (or perhaps have already seen, depending on when you are reading this), The Flu Season is a complex, strange, subtle piece of theatre. It is riddled with ambiguities, hard questions, and subverted expectations. In addition, it is an ensemble piece, one that allows for exciting acting opportunities and challenges for all actors, designers, and directors—this is important, as we are always looking to challenge ourselves and grow our craft through our work. The Flu Season also asks you, the audience, to be aware of the role you are playing as you sit in your chair and watch the story unfold. The creative team of this production found ways to invite you in even further, from the moment you entered, or will enter, the theater tonight. All of these elements are essential to the work Single Carrot Theatre strives to produce: work that unsettles, that gives one pause, that encourages you to sit forward and question what you know to be true. But beyond all of this, there is one reason I believe The Flu Season is the play we should produce as our first show in our new home. On some level,The Flu Season is about the painful process of creation. In exploring this process, it also questions the ethics of the practice. This is key. At a moment where we are committing to being storytellers for the varied, complicated, wonderful mass of people that make up this city, we need to be thinking deeply and rigorously about the stories we tell and how and why we tell them. To produce a play that digs into those very questions affirms our commitment to thoughtful exploration. We are touched and humbled by the support we have received by the Baltimore community, and we know you are counting on us to be a part of the city’s health and growth. We take that responsibility seriously, and we will not let you down. I hope tonight’s performance is an indication of the conversations and communions we hope to have with all of you, in the city we love, for many years to come.

Director's Note
Welcome to a play, we’ll call The Flu Season. Congratulations, you have been cast as audience member 6, or 2, or was it 50? It doesn’t matter really, as long as you play your part: live with us; question with us; shift just a bit too loudly in your seat; cough at the wrong time; or find yourself without a tissue when you really need one, and use your sleeve, hoping that the person next to you is looking forward; bear witness; and in doing so, become complicit for the next two hours in the creation of our play. It is a sad comedy asking what it means to create something, and what it means to live something, and what the point is, or toll, or something along those lines--maybe it will ask you something else…probably.

Single Carrot Theatre
ETYMOLOGY “The day is coming when a single carrot, freshly observed, will set off a revolution.”
OUR MISSION The single carrot theatre ensemble is a driving force for theatrical innovation in Baltimore - championing new, diverse, and socially significant works; reinvigorating the classics; creating vibrant theatrical experiences; and fiercely supporting the growth of young artists.
OUR ROOTS In 2005, two weeks before they would graduate from the University of Colorado Boulder, a group of students banded together to create Single Carrot Theatre. The company considered 50 American cities before voting to move to Baltimore—the city’s diversity, strong arts funding, and thirst for innovation were (and continue to be) among its most appealing attributes. Two years after their founding, the ensemble arrived in Baltimore with a list of five plays to produce and about $3,000. The list of plays is now a dynamic five-show season, a “Second Series” of special engagements and visiting artists from across the globe, and a portfolio of robust education programming that engages children and adults throughout the city of Baltimore and the State of Maryland. Single Carrot Theatre’s annual operating budget in FY14 is $345,000.

EDUCATION At Single Carrot Theatre, we think the arts should be a right, not a privilege. Single Carrot’s work onstage and in the community grows from the conviction that participatory cultural experiences facilitate learning, and artistic expression is civic engagement. Nearly 10,000 young people have participated in Single Carrot Theatre education programs. Offerings range from free afterschool literacy enrichment classes to student matinees, in-class visits with actors and artists, and a touring assembly program. Our High School Conservatory program, a mainstay of SCT’s education outfit, will enter its sixth year this summer. Single Carrot’s education programs serve adults, too. SCT offers low-cost courses for community members of all experience levels over the age of 16. This season’s offerings include Physical Theatre (beginning March 2), Creating a Solo Performance, Directing, Fundamentals of Design, Puppetry, and Clowning. In addition to onsite community classes, SCT offers teambuilding workshops for employees seeking better ways to work together, bond, and communicate. More information about Single Carrot Theatre’s education and community programs is available online at singlecarrot.com/education.
Not Your Mother’s Capital Campaign The Grand Opening of Single Carrot Theatre’s new home at 2600 N. Howard Street marks the beginning of the public phase of our firstever capital campaign. On January 5, 2014, we moved into a beautiful but empty space. Now we need your help to outfit the space, make the final payments on a first-class theatrical lighting system, and create a fund for flexibility. This is Not Your Mother’s Capital Campaign because our goal is relatively small ($400,000) and the funds we’re raising now aren’t just for a space, but for the people in it and the community around it. Transforming the Tire Shop In 2011, Seawall Development Company approached Single Carrot to tell us about a tire shop across the street from Miller’s Court (where Seawall turned the derelict H.F. Miller and Son Tin Box and Can Manufacturing Plant into teacher apartments and non-profit offices). If Seawall transformed the tire shop into a performance venue and restaurant, would Single Carrot move in? We answered, as every good student of theatre would, with a resounding “Yes, and.” We have always aspired to rehearse, perform, build, teach, and learn under one roof. Our new home at 2600 N. Howard Street gives us the space to do all those things safely and comfortably. Now we need a ladder to reach our high ceilings, instruments to illuminate actors onstage, and computers on which to craft lesson plans. Nurturing Our Garden We don’t see much point in making theatre if we can’t share it with others. Your support will help keep ticket prices low, expand scholarship opportunities, and increase pay for artists and staff. Single Carrot Theatre wants to work smarter, smoother, and more sustainably. We’re excited to upgrade our technology and explore further professional development through partnerships with superstar artists and administrators. Get in on the Ground Floor Your named gift is a testament not just to your commitment to Single Carrot Theatre, but to your dedication to the growth of arts and culture in Baltimore. THE MEMO
By Vaclav Havel, Translated from Czech by Paul Wilson Directed by Stephen Nunns 4/2/14-4/27/14 Company President Mr. Gross receives a memorandum but can’t read it because it’s written in Ptedype, the newly invented language to which all correspondence must adhere. If he can’t figure out what it says, he’ll lose his job and certainly his mind. This satirical take on bureaucracy and office malarkey is an incisive look at 20th century socialist Czechoslovakia, but it could just as easily be today’s America.
THE APOCALYPSE COMES AT 6 PM
By Georgi Gospodinov Directed by Genevieve de Mahy 6/11/14-6/29/14 | National Premiere Peek inside the minds of people standing on the precipice of what could be the apocalypse. It could be scary, it could be loud, but it could just as easily be a whisper. Will the earth shift, or will we just quietly close our eyes and pass from one world to the next?
