GENEVIEVE DE MAHY

DIRECTOR’S NOTE I first read Phoebe in Winter on a winter evening in the corner of a quiet, dark bar. I quickly fell in love with its absurdity and weight. Jen Silverman’s writing has wit, heft and depth with a lovely simplicity of language. What I found particularly riveting was the way the female characters are written in this play. In the majority of stories and media women are put in a very specific place— to be a satellite around the men’s quests, desires and plot lines. When there is a female lead, still, they are frequently put in a place where they are asking for permission to be there. They are clumsy, they are apologetic, they need approval. Even when they are the center of the story, they are still in the service of others. In Phoebe in Winter, the women take up space at the center of the story in a place that’s typically reserved for men. And the best part is that these female characters don’t ask for permission to be there—they demand presence. They insist on it. Inversely, the male characters take up a typically female space and are faced with navigating the power structure in a way the only those not in power are intimately familiar with. This play is about more than the aftermath of war. It’s about the power structures and systems of oppression that fuel the existence of war and its continuous cycle. It appears that Phoebe, a woman of color, is at the top of the power structure in this world. Can she successfully change the existing system of oppression from within, or is the system so powerful that it must be reinvented? War and quests for power have existed through all time in all cultures, but we cannot forget the centuries of aftermath brought on by the imperialistic colonialism of the west that is still steering current geopolitics. The continued repercussions of those attitudes are not only felt in Africa, Central/South America and the Middle East. They are in our own cities. They are in our very own homes. These ripples continue to influence and mold our own perceptions of the world. But what are we doing to change it? Jen Silverman gives us a key, when one character says to another, “Your silence has always spoken louder than your words.” Pacifism is equally as dangerous as active oppression. It is time to speak up.

THE YEAR OF THE ROOSTER BY ERIC DUFAULT DIRECTED BY DUSTIN C.T. MORRIS

DECEMBER 9, 2015 - JANUARY 9, 2016 You said, “More shows with chickens!” and we heard you. Loosely inspired by the Odysseus myth, The Year of the Rooster takes us unabashedly and unconventionally into the filthy world of cockfighting. Hapless fast-food pusher, Gil, delves deeper and deeper into the business of pitting animal against animal in this acid-tongued comedy. Without guidance, he may lose his grasp on all that’s dear to him, including his relationship with the very bird he’s trained to fight like a champion. Regional Premiere.
