GENEVIEVE DE MAHY
FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR I am thrilled to kick off our tenth season with Savage/Love. In many ways, this production brings Single Carrot back to its roots. This is the first full ensemble piece Single Carrot has produced on since Season 5. For the last three years, we have been discussing this script and waiting for the right time. We were attracted to the simplicity and beauty of the script—a series of 19 short poems about the journey of a romantic relationship. Through this rehearsal process, we have shared stories about our own romantic pasts, which are woven into the poetry of this piece. This piece brings out the universal theme of romantic love through the deeply personal. It showcases love’s ups and downs, complications and textures in a style that is very Single Carrot. We are calling Season X, “A Love Letter to Baltimore.” Many of us in the ensemble have both found and lost love in this crazy city. With Savage/Love, we are sharing our own experiences of love with you, and in turn, we hope you will find reflections of your own memories of romance and heartache.
Director’s Note JEN SPIELER
“When Sam Shepard and I decided to work in close collaboration on a new theatre piece, we wrote each other and talked on the telephone between New York and California to make plans and express first thoughts. Before meeting, we decided that our piece should be about romantic love and about the closeness and distance between lovers.” “We both felt that we wanted the piece to be readily identifiable, not esoteric. We felt it should be made up of love moments that were as immediately familiar to most people in the audience as they were to Sam and me. Although we had known each other for many years, we had never talked about this subject. When we began to talk and work, even though we each had very different stories, we found that we shared many thoughts about the human experience of love. We talked especially about the difficulty of expressing tenderness and the dread of being replaced.” “We argued about the title. Sam continually defended ‘Savage/Love’. I found something wrong with it each time I spoke and heard it. But by the second or third public performance, I felt the power and appropriateness of these two words.” “’Savage/Love’: common poems and imagined moments in the spell of love.” -Excerpts from Joseph Chaiken regarding Savage/Love, March 16, 1981

SAMSARA BY LAUREN YEE JANUARY 18 - FEBRUARY 12, 2017 Katie and Craig want a baby. Well, Katie wants a baby, and Craig wants what Katie wants. When Craig goes to India to be with their surrogate, Suraiya, flying-phobic Katie is left alone, plagued by visions of all that could go wrong and a mysterious, seductive Frenchman. Suraiya, an aspiring doctor with secrets of her own, tries to remain cool and aloof while conversing with the life growing inside of her, a curious young man who has named himself Amit. Their lives flow together and intertwine in the cycle of life, death, and rebirth known as samsara.
