ABOUT THE SHOW This performance runs approximately 90 minutes and is performed without an intermission. This performance contains water-based haze and a serious amount of blood. Commissioned and World Premiere Produced by Trinity Repertory Company, Curt Columbus–Artistic Director, Michael Gennaro – Executive Director, March 2013

ABOUT TRINITY REP Since its founding in 1963, Trinity Repertory Company has been one of the most respected regional theaters in the country. Over the past fifty years, the theater has produced a number of celebrated world premieres, mounted national and international tours, trained hundreds of new actors and directors through its MFA programs (now in association with Brown University) and has consistently been a pioneer in arts education for people of all ages and abilities. Since 1973, Trinity Rep’s home has been the Lederer Theater Center, a historic landmark built as the Majestic Theatre in 1917. In 1981 it won the Regional Theatre Tony Award, and in 2014 it was named the State Theater of Rhode Island.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE Kellie Mecleary “What do you see when you turn out the light? I can’t tell you, but I know that it’s mine.” -The Beatles Do you guys like horror movies? I never did. Blood and gore generally make me queasy, and I get too scared too fast and have nightmares. But I really liked working on this show. And I really, really liked exploring its bloodier moments. Like, really. Really. Liked it. Pop music, too. I was really anti-pop music before starting to work on Social Creatures, but the script called for some, and I ended up going whole hog, listening to nothing but Top 40 songs for weeks. Certain songs that made it in the show have become obsessions of mine — just ask anyone who has spent more than an hour with me recently. And characters: there are characters in this play whose personalities and aesthetic offend me on a deeply personal level — and I can’t get enough of them. They are the ones who delight me the most, who distract me from doing my job with the pleasure of watching them, who I am still thinking about after rehearsal ends. As it turns out, digging into the stuff you find scary or repulsive is fascinating. Jarring, yes, unnerving, sure, but also fascinating. And fun! Go figure! But about tonight. Things might get dark and weird tonight. But we also tried to keep it fun. If you could, think of the next 90 minutes as a ride. Like the last awesome haunted house ride you went on. Don’t worry about knowing anything or thinking anything before you get in — just go on the ride. Go on the ride with your whole brain and body and you’ll get more out of it probably. Oh, and turn your cell phone off. Zombies are attracted to cell phone noises. Truth.

References To Salvador Dali Make Me Hot BY JOSÉ RIVERA Preview Performances Wednesday 1/7/15 and Thursday 1/8/15 Running 1/9 - 2/8 When Gabriela awakens to find her husband Benito has returned from a military tour, their lust and frustration reach a boiling point, sending the couple down a corkscrewing slide of marital strife, sexual tension, and hostility. A Cat, a Coyote, and The Moon help weave Rivera’s story in language poetic and grounded, sensual and sardonic, all against the sweltering backdrop of a barren summer wasteland.
