BEN HOOVER
THE PLAYWRIGHT BEN HOOVER (Playwright) is a writer and neuroscientist who uses methods of experimentation and collaboration to create new works for the stage. As a playwright, his work explores human consciousness (MIDLIFE), concepts of time (PIONEER SPECIES), and utopian ideals of modern American cities filtered through the lens of Walt Disney (WHOLESOME). His plays have been produced in New York, Baltimore and Shanghai, China. As a theater-scientist, he is currently researching the role the brain plays during creation and contemplation of theatrical events. As a neuroscientist, he has researched treatments for Lou Gehrig’s disease, glioma cancers, and multiple sclerosis. His scientific experiments have been published in Neuron, Journal of Neurochemistry, and Journal of Neurosurgery. He is a recent graduate of the MFA Theatre Program in Playwriting at Columbia University.
KELLIE MECLEARY
Director’s Note One of the things that most excited me about Midlife upon first read it was its commitment to interiority. Here we have a character who is lonely, introverted, has trouble opening up to others: a woman isolated and unable to connect. As a person with introvert tendencies, coming out of a long lonely winter, I really empathized with her. The idea of offering audiences a piece in which such a character would share her innermost thoughts with the audience— thoughts she doesn’t even share with her partner—seemed to me valuable, important. Through Midlife, we could offer a kind of radical intimacy, or extreme empathy. The challenge was how. How do we take Ben Hoover’s beautiful words, which are comprised largely of the thoughts inside a character’s head, and offer them to the audience in an intimate way? I decided on a two-pronged approach: 1) Any time Beck speaks this inner monologue (or innerlogue) text, she speaks it into a microphone. The audience wears headsets, so that her words go directly into your heads. I came to this idea through podcasts: I love listening to podcasts via headphones. I feel connected to the hosts of my favorite shows in a way that I don’t feel about figures in any other media. There is something about listening to voices pumped straight into your ears that is uniquely intimate. The hope is to form a connection between you, the audience, and our main character that will be intense and specific, as if she is talking to you and only you. 2) We set the play inside Beck’s brain. How much more intimate can one get? The Ensemble acts as the homunculi, an old term used to describe the little people thought to reside in our heads, making our decisions and keeping us operational. This idea was most recently dramatized in Pixar’s Inside Out. In fact, I’ve been describing Midlife as Inside Out for adults. So if you think of the actors in strange spandex costumes, skittering around the stage, creating and shifting Beck’s world for her as theatrical versions of Joy, Sadness, Anger, and all those other loveable Inside Out characters, the whole thing may start to come together for you a bit better.
2
I’m so excited to be directing the world premiere of this ambitious, existential, generous piece about the pains of aging. This brand new play will grow beyond this production, and you all get to be a part of that growth. Thank you for going on this ride with us, for travelling into the messy,singlecarrot.com chaotic, ephemeral world of Beck’s mind. I’ll see you on the other side.

SAVAGE/LOVE
BY SAM SHEPARD & JOSEPH CHAIKIN OCTOBER 26 – NOVEMBER 20, 2016 There are as many ways to fall in — or out— of love as there are people in the world. This series of poems — at turns sweet, vulnerable, intense, and violent — traces the course of relationships from the first moment to the last touch. This fall, the Single Carrot Theatre Ensemble will give life to the savagery and tenderness within this piece, as we infuse Sam Shepard and Joseph Chaikin’s text with our own experiences of love and loss.
SAMSARA
BY LAUREN YEE JANUARY 18 - FEBRUARY 12, 2017 Katie and Craig want a baby. Well, Katie wants a baby, and Craig wants what Katie wants. When Craig goes to India to be with their surrogate, Suraiya, flying-phobic Katie is left alone, plagued by visions of all that could go wrong and a mysterious, seductive Frenchman. Suraiya, an aspiring doctor with secrets of her own, tries to remain cool and aloof while conversing with the life growing inside of her, a curious young man who has named himself Amit. Their lives flow together and intertwine in the cycle of life, death, and rebirth known as samsara.

LIGHTNING ROD SPECIAL’S
UNDERGROUND RAILROAD GAME BY JENN KIDWELL & SCOTT SHEPPARD
MARCH 8 – MARCH 26, 2017 Continuing 10 years of bringing vibrant new work to Baltimore, SCT presents Ars Nova’s production of Underground Railroad Game, by award-winning Philly-based theatre company Lightning Rod Special. Coming to Single Carrot Theatre fresh from New York, this fun and fast-paced show by creators Jenn Kidwell and Scott Sheppard turns the audience into a fifth grade class in a shockingly hilarious and poignant examination of race relations, history, and sex.
A SHORT REUNION APRIL 20 – APRIL 30, 2017 Since its inception, SCT has been privileged to perform the works of known, unknown, and soon-to-beknown playwrights in equal measure. Our commitment to introducing Baltimore audiences to plays that are both new and underproduced has allowed us to work with some amazing artists. To celebrate our epic 10th Season, we’ve commissioned playwrights from our past to write brand-new, never-before-seen shorts for SCT. Pieces by a growing list of playwrights, including the authors of Hotel Cassiopeia, Phoebe in Winter, and MilkMilkLemonade, will be performed and produced by the current ensemble, in collaboration with former ensemble members, returning specially for this spectacular, one-of-a-kind event.
PROMENADE: BALTIMORE
BY SINGLE CARROT THEATRE AND STEREO AKT JUNE 2- JUNE 25, 2017 Grab your bus pass and get ready to ride. In partnership with the Hungarian company Stereo AKT, SCT will move the theatre out of our building, onto a bus, and into the streets and neighborhoods of the city we love. Baltimore is not only the set, but also a main character in this piece, which guides audience members into a world where fantasy blends into the everyday. Viewers aboard a bus will follow actors through town while listening to thoughts, stories, and live-edited music that highlight our city, its complexity, its struggles, and its beauty.
