STIRLING AGREES HAMILTON MOVE
T
here may be a few friendly faces in the opposition lineup this evening, with Ben Stirling joining Hamilton Accies on a permanent transfer earlier this week. The versatile Academy graduate was promoted to the first-team squad in the summer for the start of pre-season training and impressed the coaching staff with his dedicated attitude. However, regular playing time has been hard to come by with the team enjoying a strong start to the new Premiership season. At 22 years of age, Ben understandably wants exposure to first-team football on a consistent basis to accelerate his

development and he leaves with the best wishes of everyone at Easter Road. Jack Ross said: “I have a lot of time for Ben and the ‘easy’ thing for me to do would be to keep him here – particularly when he can play in a few positions. “However, he’s at a point in his career when he needs and deserves to be playing regularly. He’s a great boy to work with and the last thing I’d want to do would be to stall his development. “It’s a great move for him and I’ve no doubt he’ll do well at Hamilton.” Ben joins fellow Academy graduate Scott Martin at the Accies.

MURRAY JOINS PARS ON LOAN
PORTEOUS EARNS NATIONAL CALL
Fraser Murray has agreed a seasonlong loan deal with Dunfermline.
Ryan Porteous has been rewarded for his excellent early-season form with a call-up to the senior Scotland squad.
The 21-year-old midfielder impressed for the Pars as a trialist in their recent 1-1 draw with Stenhousemuir – netting a stunning long-range effort – and will now move to East End Park for the new Championship campaign. Jack Ross said: “Fraser is someone I think a lot of, and he is a big part of my plans here.
The national team will go toe-to-toe with Ofir Marciano’s Israel in the Euro 2020 play-off semi-final before a Nations League double-header against Slovakia and Czech Republic.
“This is about getting him the regular game time that he needs at this stage of his career.
Ryan steps up from the Under-21s. It’s his second stint with the senior squad – having been initially called up for the doubleheader with Cyprus and Kazakhstan last November.
“Fraser has been involved with the squad but this is a great opportunity for him to go to a good club in a difficult league and I look forward to monitoring his progress.”
Ryan, congratulations on your callup. You’ve always said representing Scotland at any age level is an honour so this must mean a lot to you.

It means everything. I grew up dreaming about playing for Hibs and Scotland. I’ve been able to live that dream here at club level and now I’ve got a chance to join up with the squad and hopefully give a good account of myself. It maybe sounds like a cliche but it’s true – whenever you pull on a Scotland strip, at any age group, it’s an honour. I was looking forward to meeting up with Scot Gemmill and the Under-21s, but this is a great opportunity for me to work with Steve Clarke and some great players.
Everyone made me feel really welcome, so I didn’t feel overawed at any stage. You’re conscious of the level of ability all around you. You can see it in training and that maybe brings the best out of you because you want to show what you’re all about in every drill and hopefully give the manager something to think about. It was a great experience and it just made me want it all the more. My injury came at a bad time after that and disrupted the momentum, but I feel stronger than ever at the moment.
It’s well deserved after a great start to the season, for you and the team. Was it one you had in the back of your mind?
It’s been days since we last mentioned John McGinn on one of our channels. Did he look after you last time around?
You always hope because, like I said, it’s the ultimate goal. But I think I’ve got better at really focusing on training every day and taking each game as it comes. I saw Ofir saying similar at one of the recent press conferences and it definitely helps. Everything else takes care of itself if you’re playing regularly to a decent level. At the same time, I owe a lot to the staff here – the gaffer, Potts but also the ones at HTC that people maybe don’t see or hear about. A lot of people work hard to make sure we can go out and do what we do. I’ve also been lucky to play in a defence that’s had a good start to the season. Guys like Paul Hanlon and Paul McGinn have been excellent, week in, week out and Josh Doig has been a revelation. Lewis, too, when he’s stepped in but that’s standard for him. Behind us, Ofir’s been on top of his game but he’s welcome to ease up for a week if it helps Scotland.
I shared a room with John and it’s always good to see him. Like me, he had his own injury to deal with but he’s obviously back on top form with Aston Villa. Everyone at Hibs is really proud of what he’s done and he’s the first to say how much he benefited from being at Hibs as well. John’s clearly an important player for the national team, too, and I’m glad it’s not my job to pick the 11 who start. We have a lot of good options.
What did you take away from your previous Scotland call-up?
How will you approach it then? I just want to show the staff what I can do and play my part in whatever way I can, whether it’s getting a chance to play in one of the games or making sure training is as competitive as possible. I went in with an open-mind last time and like to think I picked up a few things. When you’re surrounded by good players and new experiences it would be daft not to. It’s a privilege and the sort of thing I would never take for granted so I’ll go there and give it my all.

STEPHEN MCGINN
SPONSORED BY
No-one had to tell Stephen McGinn what to expect when he walked through the doors at the Hibernian Training Centre.
N
The experienced, versatile midfielder recently agreed a deal until the end of the campaign – having proven his fitness over the course of a grueling pre-season programme.
10
HIBERNIANFC.CO.UK
He follows in the family footsteps of his youngest brother, John – whose named will be forever etched in Hibees history for the part he played in that Scottish Cup triumph back in 2016. More recently, his middle brother, Paul, has won rave reviews for his performances at right-back – with some tipping him for international recognition.
vs HAMILTON | 02/10/20
However, the family love affair extends beyond that – with Stephen a regular at Easter Road to follow the pair or tuning into Hibs TV when that wasn’t an option, while others within the McGinn clan are familiar faces around the stadium and always welcome. So, it’s no wonder if feels like home already for the former St Mirren captain.
STEPHEN, HOW HAVE THE LAST FEW WEEKS BEEN NOW YOU’RE A FULLY-FLEDGED HIBERNIAN PLAYER? It was great to get everything over the line, for a few reasons. I have a young family and when you’re an out of contract player you’re always looking for that security. I’m also a football obsessive, so I missed being around this environment. More than anything, it’s just a privilege to be here. I’ve probably said this to a few people already, but what Paul said about appreciating the opportunity to come and play for Hibernian rings true for me as well. It’s come later on in my career and I intend to make the most of it. The club means a lot to me and the family. They did so much to help develop John and I also think it’s the kind of stage that Paul has deserved for a while. It’s a great set-up, group of staff and dressing room of team-mates. Everything is in place for us to do well and for me to enjoy my time here.
HOW WAS PRE-SEASON FOR YOU? I was naturally frustrated because I’ve always looked after myself and I have played a lot of football throughout my career, so I had to be patient and work my way back to full fitness following a wee injury I picked up at St Mirren. I feel the benefit of it now, thanks to the guys at HTC. I think it’s to the credit of the staff and players how everyone just adapt to all the changes that have been made – with all the different protocols to follow. Everyone’s just got on with it and tried to make the best of it and I think that attitude has been reflected out on the park. In terms of settling in it’s been easy. I knew the coaching staff already, a few of the players and the rest I got to know pretty quickly. There’s a good atmosphere in there, whether it’s the senior core that have been there for a long time or some of the younger players who are in there determined to make the most of any chance that comes their way.
WHAT APPEALED ABOUT COMING HERE? I feel like I already had a really good grounding of what the club is all about. We would obviously come to watch John as a family and the interest stemmed from there. I’d come to games at Easter Road and always looked out for the result. The same applied when Paul joined. They would both always say how much they enjoyed it here and how well they were looked after and I can see that for myself now. It’s a great environment to be in. I also liked the idea of helping contribute to Hibs having a really good season. The type of

guys that Jack and John are, they’re ambitious. They don’t want to settle for doing okay, so the thought of being involved in a group pushing to qualify for Europe appealed.
YOU’VE HAD A FIRST-HAND VIEW OF THE START TO THE SEASON. WHAT HAVE YOU MADE OF IT? We set the bar high in pre-season about what we wanted to do and I think there’s been a real focus with the boys, week to week. Obviously, it was disappointing to lose to Aberdeen and Celtic, but both came down to fine lines. Aberdeen could have gone either way and we were in and around the box plenty in the first half against Celtic. In the other games I think there’s been determination and a lot of ability shown in the way the boys have gone about their business. Supporters have clearly had to make do with watching it from home on Hibs TV but I hope they like what they’ve seen. It’s an honest squad who are hungry to achieve something.
HOW DO YOU RATE THE IMPACT OF YOUR FELLOW NEW SIGNINGS? I think it’s there for all to see. Alex Gogic has had a lot of plaudits and rightly so. He’s a player’s player in that he does so much unselfish work for the team. I think he does a great job in protecting the defence and just generally making life difficult for the opposition. I was pleased to see Drey get his goal against Rangers. He’s been a bit stop-start with the niggling injury but I think everyone saw from his time at St Johnstone what an asset he could prove to be for us. Kevin Nisbet has taken really well to the step up. I think people are now starting to realise there’s more to his game than just scoring goals and he complements Christian Doidge really well. Jamie Murphy is a known quantity. He’ll prove to be a great signing. He’s a clever player who brings a lot of experience and quality from operating at a good level. The gaffer’s lost a lot of players over the summer but the club’s done some good business at the same time.
HOW IMPORTANT IS TONIGHT’S GAME AGAINST HAMILTON? It’s very important. If we want to challenge for a European place then it stands to reason that, more often than not, we need to win. We’ve had that momentum early in the season and we need to keep it going. Hamilton never make it easy for you and have some good players but we have enough to give them something to think about. We’re going into a busy period of games and we want to bounce back from losing at Celtic.

BRIAN RICE Brian Rice will be a friendly face to Hibernian fans, having broken through the ranks at Easter Road in the 1980s as well as being assistant manager to John Hughes in 2009. ‘Chipper’ stepped into his first managerial role in January 2019 when he took charge of the Accies, keeping them in the Scottish Premiership in both 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons. With a youthful and energetic side taking shape, nobody would bet against the Accies defying the odds once again this season.
C AP TA IN
SCOTT MCMANN With injuries keeping club captain Brian Easton on the sidelines so far this campaign the armband has been passed to Scott McMann. A sending off for two bookings against Rangers was a set-back for the defender, but he returned to a defence that, with the exception of an opening day defeat at Celtic Park, has given little away thus far. With captain responsibilities and having made his debut back in 2013 it’s easy to forget that McMann himself is only 24, an elder statesman on young shoulders.
K E Y PL AY ER
HAKEEM ODOFFIN Hakeem Odoffin has been one of the league’s surprise packages this season. When the defender joined from Livingston in the summer it was with a view to strengthening the defence – few would have anticipated the player becoming Accies’ leading scorer! With no senior goals to his name prior to this season, the Englishman now has three in eight games including a winner in the Lanarkshire derby and an equaliser last time out against Dundee United. 18

Paul Hanlon scored a late winner as Hibernian came from behind to take all three points. Summer signing Alex Gogic opened the scoring for the visitors after 18 minutes, but Christian Doidge equalised after tapping home a rebound from Martin Boyle’s strike. A draw looked the likely outcome but with 6 minutes to go Boyle again weaved his way through the Accies’ defence before crossing for Hanlon to power a header home. OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGR AMME
