THE
EDITOR GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME BACK TO AINSLIE PARK FOR WHAT PROMISES TO BE A HUGE FIXTURE IN THE CHASE FOR SECOND SPOT.
T
he big games keep on coming. It was fantastic to see so many of you out at Easter Road to support the girls in their UEFA Women's Champions League match against Slavia Praha last Wednesday evening. While the final score was not the one we wanted it was a huge experience for everyone at the club and a reminder of the potential that women's football has to grow and to inspire. Thank you for making the effort to come along. Our SSE Scottish Cup run continued at Ainslie Park with a hard fought victory over a very well disciplined Hamilton Academical team. Success has resulted in a semifinal tie against Motherwell at Forthbank Stadium in Stirling. For anyone who hasn't made the trip up to Forthbank for the semi-finals before it is well worth a visit as the SWF offer both semi-finals for just ÂŁ5 per ticket. That's incredible value which this year will see you also gain entry to the Glasgow City vs Rangers fixture at 12:00 followed by Hibs taking on Motherwell at 15:30. It's a perfect opportunity to bring the kids along for a fantastic day out to see some of the best players in Scotland for rock bottom prices. Away from the pitch we have noted some critical feedback via our social media channels with regards to our current social media output. I will be the first to put my hands up and admit that it is not where I want it to be. However I am delighted to say that following on from last issue we have brought another team member on
board to assist with video content. We are also seeing an increased backing from Hibernian's own media people and I can promise that things are moving in a very positive direction. I think it's also important to note here that while people have picked up on the areas we lack in, we do excel in a number of other areas. It is the dedication and skill of our volunteers that brings you all of our content and I would like to thank all of our team members at Hibernian for their regular contributions that bring everyone updates from within the club. What a huge success we had last week with our competition giving away a pair of tickets to the Hamilton match along with the chance to meet the players. Our winners made the long trip from Kilmarnock just to have the chance to meet Jamie-Lee Napier and they were absolutely delighted by the fact that were also able to meet Amy Muir and Joelle Murray among others. It is this kind of engaging experience that the club can offer and we want to be able to inspire people by giving them the chance to meet their heroes and role models. The girls that play for this club are more than footballers. They are a huge inspiration to the next generation of young players and they go above and beyond to help create memorable experiences for their young fans. We hope we can continue to inspire and make dreams come true.

match.
On the game itself, I’m still a little sore over the end result as I didn’t see a 4-1 difference between the sides on the night (even if I am biased). I was really happy with Touching on the cup win against Hamilton the way the players executed the game, I last week as I said post match, I wasn’t thought we looked very competitive against particularly pleased with our one of women’s European overall play but the aim in football elite clubs and should those matches is to progress take a lot of confidence "IN MY OPINION to the next round and we’ve that. everything they have for the cause. We head into today’s match with Celtic after a 4-0 league win over Spartans, a game I felt we dominated but struggled to find the break-through. Once we did however, it was fairly plain sailing. Today though, we face a strong Celtic side striving for second position much like ourselves. In my opinion Celtic now look a more physically strong group of players with increased belief in each other than possibly in previous years and they’ve always been a side that can play good football. It’s one win each in our two games earlier in the season so there’s no doubt this will be a tight one. This week has felt like our first full week of training for a while so we hope to have the players ready and prepared. Over the years we’ve had a good record against Celtic and we’re aiming to continue that. Having enjoyed our Champions League exploits this season, we’re looking for more and while second place is not what we set out to achieve this season, we must put ourselves in that position come the end of the season to potentially have the opportunity of European football next season so a win today is very important. This will be a great match for spectators to watch so get yourself along to Ainslie Park and support this talented group of players once again.

laying at Easter Road is always a momentous occasion for not only myself but also my family. I’m a massive Hibernian fan as are my Dad and Granddad so for them to see me lead a Hibernian team out onto the hallowed turf at Easter Road upon which we’ve watched so many of our heroes grace, is a proud occasion.
cup is ours to defend and we certainly want to retain it for a fourth consecutive year. We’ve been drawn against Motherwell in the semi-final, the team we beat in the final comfortably last year however since then they have improved massively so we know we need to be focussed and keep our standards high if we are to make it to another final.
That being said the game itself was disappointing. ups for the two to look forward to in future. Celtic will provide a tough test today as they always do. A team which is full of youth and experience who are receiving a lot of backing from the club recently. They will be looking for back to back wins over us after securing a 3-0 home victory at K-Park before the summer break. However we feel like we have something to prove, we let ourselves down massively the last time we played them and we will be looking to get back to winning ways against them. Rachel Boyle's 50th minute opener broke Spartans defensive resistance but didn't come without controversy as there were shouts of an offside that wasn't given by referee or linesman. Boyle finished smartly striking the ball across Harrison for her fifth goal of the season to set Hibs on the way to victory.
HUNTER HOT STREAK
For the third successive game the centre half has found the back of the net. This time a double to go with her hat-trick last week seeing the defender into double figures for the season.
PRESS REACTION

THE BIG INTERVIEW - AMY GALLACHER
AMY
GALLACHER THE VERSATILE MIDFIELDER TALKS ABOUT HER FAMOUS FOOTBALLING FAMILY AND CONTINUING THE TREND AT HIBERNIAN. This is your third season for Hibernian. How have these last few years been playing for the club? AG: They have been great. I’ve improved as a player and a person and I really enjoy playing here so hopefully that continues. How did it feel when you made your debut for the club? AG: It was a proud moment for me and my mum and dad. It was a big step up at the time but an easy decision to come and play for a big club like Hibernian. Everyone remembers their first goal. Can you describe you first goal for Hibernian and the feeling that comes with hitting the back of the net for the first time? AG: My first goal was against Aberdeen in the league. Lizzie Arnot
crossed it in and I just kind of let it hit off my chest with my back to goal, turned and hit it. It
"I FEEL THAT WAS THE PERFECT TIME FOR ME TO HAVE A NEW CHALLENGE. FORFAR FARMINGTON UNFORTUNATELY GOT RELEGATED SO I FELT I HAD TO MOVE ON IF I WAS TO CONTINUE TO DEVELOP. I HAD A FEW TEAMS INTERESTED BUT IT WAS ALWAYS HIBS FOR ME." was good to get a goal so early on in my first season and thankfully it wasn’t my last!
You joined the club when you were 18-years-old. Do you feel moving at that point has allowed you develop further than you would have at a later age? AG: Yeah, I feel that was the perfect time for me to have a new challenge. Forfar Farmington unfortunately got relegated so I felt I had to move on if I was to continue to develop. I had a few teams interested but it was always Hibs for me. Chris was a top coach and the players that Hibs have made it a no brainier for me to move at the time. You didn't grow up here in Edinburgh. Where did you grow up and where did you go to school? AG: I grew up in Dundee and I actually still live there now. I went to Clepington Primary

THE BIG INTERVIEW - AMY GALLACHER
School and then on to Morgan Academy. When were you first introduced to football and did you play for your school team? AG: I was always kicking a ball around when I was wee so my mum took me along to mini kickers when I was about fouryears-old. I played with the boys team at my primary school and we are still all pals now so it’s great. I guess playing with boys at an early age made me a better player. Can you give us an insight into the early days of your football career? What was the first club that you joined and at what age? AG: My first time playing in a team was at the J-league ran by Dundee United. Every weekend you went along and just played games basically and I loved it. When I was about nine or 10 I joined Dundee United girls where I played from under 11s to under 17s. You’ve played as a midfielder during your time at the club, but did you play other
22
positions growing up? AG: I used to mainly play as a striker, but I’ve played every attacking position really. My favoured position is probably just behind the striker, but I’ll play anywhere if it means I’ll be on the pitch!
"THE MAIN STORY I’VE BEEN TOLD IS WHEN HE SCORED BY FORWARD ROLLING INTO THE NET WITH THE BALL BETWEEN HIS LEGS! I’VE NEVER SEEN ANY FOOTAGE, BUT HIS NAME IS STILL THROWN ABOUT NOW AS BEING ONE OF CELTIC'S BEST EVER PLAYERS." You have four generations of footballers before you. Was it perhaps just nature that you would continue the trend? AG: I suppose you could say it’s in the genes and it’s nice knowing that I could sort of
carry the family name, but my family have never pushed me to do anything. I just play football because I love it. One of which is your great grandfather, Patsy Gallacher who played for Celtic between 1911-25. Does your family ever tell you stories of his career or have you seen any footage of him play? AG: The main story I’ve been told is when he scored by forward rolling into the net with the ball between his legs! I’ve never seen any footage, but his name is still thrown about now as being one of Celtic's best ever players. Celtic of course opponents in the league on Sunday. How does it feel for yourself when you have played against them in the past having that Celtic history within your family? AG: It doesn’t really affect me. Obviously, the history is nice but when you’re on the pitch none of that matters. I’m a Hibs player and want to win every game no matter who it’s against.
23

THE BIG INTERVIEW - AMY GALLACHER
Through to the semifinals of the SSE Scottish Women’s Cup last weekend. How does it feel to reach this stage of the competition for another year? AG: It’s great to reach another semi. Obviously, the cup is ours and has been for a couple of years now and we want to keep that going. Motherwell are a good team, but we seem to have a confidence in cup games so hopefully we can reach the final again and bring the cup home. Considering Hibernian’s success in domestic cup competition in recent years, is it just second nature to be reaching this stage of the competition year after year? AG: I think what we have done in the cups is under estimated. To keep on winning them along with losing the amount of players that we have just shows our togetherness and confidence in the cup competitions. Hopefully it doesn’t stop! Like many of the players here you have enjoyed a very
successful career playing in the Scotland youth setup, particular through the U17 and U19 age groups. How did it feel to pull on the blue shirt and represent your country? AG: I loved playing for Scotland and seeing
"WE HAVE DROPPED POINTS WHERE WE FEEL WE SHOULDN’T HAVE BUT THAT’S FOOTBALL. WE JUST HAVE TO MAKE SURE WE GET GOOD PERFORMANCES AND CONSISTENCY THIS SECOND HALF TO FINISH THE SEASON STRONGLY." how proud my mum and dad were every time I played. Reaching the EURO finals for the 19s squad was one of the best experiences ever and I think it will be hard to find a squad like that again! Back to Hibernian
and looking back at the first half of the league season, how do you feel it has gone compared to previous years at the club? AG: We have won the league cup and qualified for the last 32 of the Champions League and I still feel as a squad we could be doing better. I just think that shows the standards we set ourselves. We have dropped points where we feel we shouldn’t have but that’s football. We just have to make sure we get good performances and consistency this second half to finish the season strongly, hopefully with another trophy as well. That being said, there was cup success as the club won a fourth successive SWPL Cup by beating Glasgow City on penalties at Airdie's Excelsior Stadium. How important was that victory in really kick starting the season and reminding everyone that Hibernian are still very much one of the top teams in the country? AG: I think that win in particular showed

everyone out-with the club that we are still a top team and are here to compete. While others were doubting us, we believed in ourselves and that made the win quite special for us.
Champions League!
Moving into the second half of the season the club has just returned from the Champions League qualifying trip to Slovenia where the team successfully won all three of their group matches to get through the qualifying group stage for the first time. You experienced the previous trip to Romania where the team came up just short so how did it feel to get over the line this time?
"THE GAME AT EASTER ROAD WAS DEFINITELY ONE TO REMEMBER. ALTHOUGH IT WASN’T A GREAT RESULT, THE WHOLE OCCASION WAS BRILLIANT PLAYING UNDER THE LIGHTS WITH A GOOD HOME SUPPORT. HOPEFULLY WE CAN HAVE ANOTHER ONE LIKE THAT IN THE FUTURE."
AG: The trip to Romania was my first experience in the UWCL and although we just fell at the last hurdle it was another great experience. This year was a great draw for us where we felt we could go out and get a result in every game. To go out and get three wins though was unreal. Not many people can say they have qualified for the last 32 of the

spending that amount of time with each other just brings us closer. Every single player there contributed, and it was just a great trip all round. The draw has thrown up a tie against Slavia Prague to which the club have responded by hosting the home leg at Easter Road. How exciting is it not only to be able to bring Champions League football to Edinburgh but also to play out on the pitch at Easter Road again? AG: The game at Easter road was definitely one to remember. Although it wasn’t a great result, the whole occasion was brilliant playing under the lights with a good home support. Hopefully we can have another one like that in the future.
been beneficial to the group, especially with so many new players joining the squad in the last 6-12 months?
While you and the squad will be disappointed with last week’s result, it must give you some confidence that the squad can go toe to toe with one of Europe’s stronger sides?

all over the park. We played some great football and worked our socks off against a top professional team. Hopefully we can go there and put on a good performance in the second leg. The second leg takes place next week in Prague. While the focus will be on overcoming the threegoal deficit, you must be excited for another European trip with the squad? AG: Yeah, it’s great to get away again with the squad and play top teams in the Champions League. While it will be tough, we have to believe we can go there and cause an upset. Anything can happen in football. Back home, there was the small matter of a second Edinburgh derby of the season against Hearts over at Oriam. Earlier in the season Hearts provided a stern test at Ainslie Park but this time Hibs came away with a 7-1 win. What did it mean for you to beat the club’s rivals? AG: It was a great result against a really strong
Hearts side. Games don’t come much bigger than a derby so it was good for the team to get such a strong result, especially for the diehard Hibees! Looking ahead slightly, this is clearly a huge second half to the

What message would you send out to anyone who might be looking to come along to their first match?
AG: Your support would mean a lot to the team. We have had a great backing on social media recently so it would be great if the fans could come out in their numbers and support us and women’s football in general. Do you have any goals or personal objectives for the remainder of this season? AG: Just to keep performing well in every game and help the team in any way I can, hopefully chip in with a few goals when Siobhan’s not scoring! Most people have a club that they support. What team do you follow and why? AG: Dundee United. My dad’s a big fan so I’ve been brought up supporting them. We both have a season ticket so go down every Saturday to the games. Do you have any footballing role models from the professional game or that you have played with? AG: I don’t think I particularly looked up to one single person when I was younger but being from the east region

Lisa Evans was one my age group saw as a role model. Everyone loves a bit of fashion and these days boots are no exception. What is your choice of footwear on the pitch this season? AG: I don’t really have a preference of boots, but I’ve just recently changed to a pair of bright yellow Nike boots which have been getting a bit of a slagging! Obviously, you are still young and have years of playing time ahead of you, but have you made any plans to get involved in coaching or other aspects of football that would see you potential stay involved after you finish playing? AG: I’m not sure if coaching is really a thing I would like to pursue as a job (which is ironic as I study sports coaching at uni…) but you never know what could happen in the future. I quite enjoy coaching kids at primary school age. Who are the best players you have played alongside and

I think they went on to win the whole thing that year too. Can you tell us something about
yourself that we don't know? AG: I think everyone knows this, but I love mojitos! Who is the most famous person you have ever met? AG: Jedward. As you can tell my life isn’t very exciting. Music. Lia seems to like taking charge of the tunes on the bus but who do you enjoy listening to and what is the best gig you have ever been to? AG: I have quite a wide music taste but recently I’ve been listening to Siobhan’s SoundCloud playlist she plays in the changing room – class. I went to the The Killers at TRNSMT a couple of years ago and really enjoyed that. What is your favourite movie of all time? AG: Hard question but I’m going to say The Goonies.

NEWS KIRSTEN REILLY DEPARTS FOR BRISTOL CITY Kirsten Reilly has signed for Women’s Super League side, Bristol City. The former Hibernian midfielder joined the English club ahead of their league campaign. The first division side finished sixth in the league last season and have picked up one point from their opening two games this season. Kirsten joins another former Hibee, Abi Harrison who signed for Bristol in January. She will look to emulate the success of another exHibernian player who made the switch to the Robins in Lucy Graham, who finished last season as Bristol's top scorer securing a move to
Everton ahead of the new WSL campaign. Kirsten signed for Hibs in January 2018 and played a big part in two SWPL Cups and the SSE Scottish Women’s Cup. Lifelong Hibee Kirsten is sad to be departing but grateful for the opportunity to live the dream in the green and white. She said: “I can’t thank everyone at Hibernian enough for what they have done for me during my time here. “It’s been the most amazing experience. I’ve improved as a player and a person. I’ll take all of that with me.
“Being a lifelong Hibee made my decision even harder but I’m excited for my next challenge.” Head Coach Grant Scott expressed his disappointment at losing Kirsten’s services. He added: “When she joined the squad Kirsten was a little behind the others. But she recognised that and to watch the transformation in her fitness and strength levels tells you all you need to know about Kirsten’s attitude. As a person and an athlete, she became a very influential player in our side. Kirsten leaves with our backing and our best wishes. Once again it shows evidence of the work being done at Hibernian that another talent has been developed and recognised by others. We have a group of hungry players who will now fight for that starting spot in our side and I’m excited to see who steps up. We have a lot of quality.” Everyone at Hibernian wishes Kirsten the best of luck in the future and for her next challenge!

DEBUTS FOR U23 PLAYERS ADAMS AND MCDONALD AGAINST HAMILTON Hibernian’s 3-0 win over Hamilton in the Scottish Cup last weekend saw manager Grant Scott hand competitive debuts to Abbi McDonald and Eilidh Adams.
She’s an old-fashioned centre forward, we like the way she plays and links up the play. So, we’ll keep looking at her and try to develop her as we go along.”
Both players came off the bench in the second half, with Eilidh replacing Lauren Davidson and Abbi coming on for goalscorer Amy Gallacher.
Grant went on to speak about Abbi, he added: “Abbi’s been given a bit of a reward for playing well with the 23s, our development team. We’ve seen Abbi training a couple of times now as well. We quite like the way she plays, she’s good with the ball, she’s energetic, she can battle away quite well. Today was just to give her a sample of the next stage for her.”
Eilidh had previously made an appearance for Hibernian, in a friendly match against Durham earlier this year. Speaking on the differences between a friendly match and a competitive one, Eilidh said: “The atmosphere, especially at the start, is a bit different. We wanted to go in, win it and get through to the next round. “With it being a cup game, that made us want and need to win it even more, so we could go on to hopefully retain the cup.” Head Coach, Grant Scott spoke highly of his debutants after the game. With regard to Eilidh, he said; “We’ve had Eilidh training for awhile now.
40
Grant continued by saying the players would have seen the first hand the jump in intensity from development football to the competitive scene. Grant said: “I think it’s important for the players to understand the difference from where they’re playing to playing in the first team. It gives them a good taste of the physical attributes that they’ll come up against if they move into the first team.”

CELTIC
T
he Hoops come into this fixture sitting three points above Hibernian in the SWPL1 table, albeit having played a game more, making today's clash potentially crucial in the battle for second place. Celtic come into today's fixture in good league form having enjoyed a pair of home games against Stirling and Forfar that saw a return of eleven goals for none conceded. They have only lost once since the middle of April and that as in a battling performance against Glasgow City at Petershill where they could have snatched something from the game. However Celtic did taste defeat just last week in their SSE Scottish Cup quarter-final against Glasgow City, losing 2-0 at K-Park in a
42
match that effectively ended their pursuit of a trophy this season and undoubtedly places greater pressure on securing a second place finish in the league. The arrival of Eddie Wolecki Black has seen Celtic make a number of improvements across the pitch, becoming harder to beat and impressively competitive in tougher fixtures. Much like Hibs they have a strong academy system in place which has started paying dividends with the likes of Kathleen McGovern breaking into the first team. Since our last fixture Celtic have yet again improved their squad with Cara McBrearty returning after time out and sought-after goalkeeper Chloe Logan returning to the club after several seasons at Stirling University.
THE OPPOSITION - CELTIC
25 MEGAN CUNNINGHAM Keeper returned after spells at Hamilton and Glasgow City.
6 CHLOE CRAIG
Defender has spent over ten years at Celtic after breaking into the first team through the youth academy. Was on the score-sheet against Hibs earlier this season at K-Park.
8 KATHERINE SMART
Athletic midfield option joined from EUHV for the 2019 season.
5 NATALIE ROSS
Midfielder returned to Scotland after a spell at Arsenal.
2 EDDIE WOLECKI BLACK
The ex-Glasgow City manager took the reigns last season after securing SWPL1 promotion with Motherwell. His experience of success in the women's game at the highest level in Scotland has brought a dramatic improvement in results in a short space of time as Celtic look to close the gap to the top two.
KEEVA KEENAN
The tough tackling Irish full-back won Celtic's player of the year award last year after having arrived at Celtic in 2018 after a successful spell with Glasgow City.
11 SARAH EWENS
Ex-Hibs striker joined in 2017 after winning the Scottish Cup.
12 RACHEL DONALDSON Quick midfielder joined from Stirling at the start of 2018.
LAST MEETING CELTIC 3 HIBERNIAN 0
A first SWPL victory for Celtic arrived in the last meeting of the teams at K-Park earlier this season. The hosts were able to take full advantage of a depleted Hibs squad missing captain Joelle Murray through injury and Rachael Boyle. Sarah Ewens capitalised on a defensive mix-up to open the scoring before the break. Chloe Craig added another in the second half then Natalie Ross rounded out the scoring by reacting first to a long ball from a free-kick to give Celtic a well earned three points.

KEY MOMENT
With Hibs pressing to add to their early lead it was Siobhan Hunter who stepped up yet again to secure the win, blasting home the rebound after McGregor's header was well saved by Grant in the Hamilton goal.
DOUBLE DEBUT
It's not the first time this season Grant Scott has put faith in calling up members of the U23 squad. This time Eilidh Adams and Abbi McDonald both enjoyed a taste of first team action.
THE GAFFER
"At the end of the day the only objective in a cup tie is to get through and we've done that. Am I happy with the performance and how difficult we've made it? No but the girls are aware 0f that themselves, they know during the game that they are making it more difficult than it could be."
WHO SAID WHAT?
“It was a great feeling. It's the first time I've ever made a competitive appearance so it was really good to come up and experience what it's like at the highest level.” ABBI MCDONALD
PRESS REACTION
“Amy Gallacher gave holders Hibs an early lead against SWPL 2 side Hamilton but it wasn’t until the last 25 minutes that Siobhan Hunter sealed victory with two goals, the second from the spot." SHEKICKS.NET

FIXTURES & RESULTS
WORDS BY SARAH ARCHIBALD
I
have been coaching with the Hibernian Academy for almost two years now. I have always been with the U15 National Performance squad which is our U15 level squad aimed at developing performance level players looking to advance towards the Hibernian Ladies first team. I previously played with Spartans and for Scotland U15s, U17s and U19s during my playing career. After having to stop playing earlier than I would have liked I am glad I’ve been able to get into coaching at the Hibernian Academy. I try to share my experiences from my time playing to help support the girls in their progression. For me it’s all about development. I always encourage them to see the bigger picture. Winning is fun but at this level continually improving performances is much better. I’d much rather play an attractive brand of football than win week in, week out by hoofing the ball back to front. That
50
is an important ethos for us as a team and as an academy. I’d like to think that the girls think I’m pretty calm and collected most of the time. The girls also benefit from the coaching of Stewart Plenderleith. Stew joined us midway through this season bringing a wealth of coaching experience from his time spent in the United States. He brings a different dynamic to the coaching team sharing his experience and styles he’s used in America. He’s settled in excellently and we work really well together. He sees things differently to me and that’s important - it certainly benefits the girls and their development and that is what’s important. I’ve always been impressed with Hibernian and their player pathway even before I started coaching here. You don’t have to look too far to see the talent that the Hibernian Academy continually produces. The

current U15s NP squad are able to see the like of Kirsty Smith and Siobhan Hunter who both started out at Hibs U15s. Their journey and accomplishments having been in the very same spot as our U15s NP are a huge inspiration to the girls. Recently we have been able to push girls on and have them training with the U23s which has been fantastic. Brodie Hutchison, Taylor Hemmings, Rowan McTavish, Katie Bryce, Ciara Holmes and Kirsty Taylor have all had that opportunity during the second half of the season. It’s hugely important for the girls to be familiarising themselves with that
51
ACADEMY - UNDER 15 NATIONAL PERFORMANCE
environment and testing themselves against usually more physical players. This season has been a real interesting one for a number of reasons. Out of the 16 players in the squad only two had remained from last years U15s NP. For some it was a new way of playing in a 4-2-3-1 - it was also a new brand of football that some hadn’t experienced before. The ethos of building from the back, playing through the field, creating lots of chances and countering quickly was new for some. If I was to say the start of the season was tough that would be an understatement. I remember vividly the first game of the season against Glasgow City where we got trounced 6-0. The girls were so deflated as you would expect. We didn’t
52
defend well and we didn’t create many chances. But this is the same team we have matched and more in subsequent league games and friendlies during the second half of this season. Only being beaten by a freakish goal or two and with only ourselves not converting goals scoring chances have prevented results going in our favour. The improvement and progression of individuals and the team collectively has been tremendous. Rosie Livingstone has been a real stand out for us this year. I’m sure players and parents including opposition will agree with me on this. Often playing in the number 10 role this season her ability to make things happen for us has been superb. She’s one of the youngest in our team
but has already been up training with our U23s (despite the fact she's too young to play with their squad!) she doesn’t just not look out of place she adds something else! One to watch. One of the biggest things for me as an academy coach is always reminding folk about the purpose of academy football. It’s about development and progression. Its about pathways, opportunities and experiences. It’s not just about winning trophies - that’ll come in time. Having patience and the ability to see the bigger picture can be testing for young footballers (and parents!). That makes it even more important that coaches are forever reiterating that to both players and parents/ carers.

THE MANAGER
Injuries are something you never want your players to have, but for me, concussion is a huge issue and it’s quite difficult to manage. We’ve had three this season, two of them by the same player and one when we were away in Champions League. Although there are guidelines on how to complete a gradual return to play, it is guided by the player and their symptoms. Concussion is still a hugely grey area and new research is emerging all the time about the dangers of playing through it and the potential long-term effects. It’s also made harder by the players never being keen to have any time out of training or games. I always think though, bones and soft tissue can heal, but you use your brain for so much and its irreplaceable, so it’s one of those medical issues that you have to get absolutely right first time.
