THE EDITOR

THE

EDITOR GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO AINSLIE PARK FOR THE SSE SCOTTISH CUP QUARTER-FINAL TIE AGAINST HAMILTON ACADEMICAL.

I

t has been an exhilarating, action-packed few weeks for the club. Two fixtures against Stirling University, two Edinburgh Derby fixtures away to Hearts and to Spartans, the UEFA Women's Champions League at Easter Road and now we are fast approaching the SSE Scottish Cup QuarterFinal fixture against Hamilton Academical. Focussing in on the cup it has been a real rocket ride of a start to the 2019 edition. The UWCL qualify stage held in Slovenia resulted in us missing out on third round weekend with the match against Stirling being delayed until the following Wednesday. We took that fixture to Penicuik Athletic and it proved to be such a memorable night for so many reasons. I@d like to extend my thanks to the 300+ supporters including girls from many of our academy teams who made the trip out to support the team on a night where the rain and wind would have turned many away. It was a professional performance from the team and I do hope that a few of the locals dropped in to a glimpse of the team in action. The fourth round tie against Heart of Midlothian was a mouth-watering Edinburgh derby. Hearts ran us very close in the SWPL1 Cup at the start of the season losing out only to a long-range effort from Kirsten Reilly. The score wasn't so close this out but Hearts showed real threat early in the first half taking the lead before Hibs took over. Again the game was well supported. Oriam is a fantastic venue for

watching football and we were delighted to see so many supporters come out to back both teams on what was another great day for the game in this country. Our support means everything us as a club. We want to look for new ways to engage with our supporters to give a little back. You may have noticed that we are giving away a pair of tickets plus a chance to meet your favourite player for every home game between now and the end of the season via our Twitter channel. This is just one of a number of exciting things we have lined up for the second half of the season. Stayed tuned to our Twitter feed for more! Away from the pitch we are delighted to announce that two new faces have joined our media team. Jack Donnelly and Struan Garvie have been introduced by David Ronney and will be handling a lot of the social media content on a match day. Keep an eye out for them working hard around the pitch-side today! We also have another exciting announcement on the staff recruitment front coming shortly but we will delve into that next issue. Again, thanks to everyone who makes the effort to come along on a match day. I hope you enjoy today's quarter-final against Hamilton Academical.

sure we could attract a large number of fans to a great venue. As a final note, I’d like to wish departing midfielder Kirsten Reilly all the very best as she last week secured a move to full-time football with Bristol City in the English Super League. Kirsten joined the side at the same time as myself in January 2018 and went on to become a major component of the squad with her performances on the field and her character off it. A lifelong Hibee she lived the dream by scoring at Easter Road last season against today’s opponents Hamilton. She’ll be missed but as with any of our players who move on, they have our best wishes. Enjoy the game today.

Much like the last encounter at Peffermill Stirling impressed defensively making it tough for Hibernian to break them down. Napier's opening goal just before half-time was pivotal in opening up the game in the second-half allowing Hibernian to stretch their lead.

A PERFECT TEN

In two visits to Ochilview this season Hibernian have netted ten goals without conceding making it their favourite away ground of the campaign thus far.

PRESS REACTION

“Hibernian hit four goals without reply at Stirling University, Jamie-Lee Napier netting in either half, Amy Gallacher and Kirsty Morrison and on target in the second period. The sides meet again this Wednesday in the SSE Scottish Women’s Cup 3rd Round at Penicuik Athletic FC" SHEKICKS.NET

THE GAFFER

“Overall we were good today. We controlled the game but were a little bit wasteful in the final third which has been a consistent thing for us. We sharpened up a little bit in the second half, moved Stirling around a little bit more and I was delighted with the clean sheet and the four goals.”

THE BIG INTERVIEW - SIOBHAN HUNTER

SIOBHAN

HUNTER THE CENTRE BACK DISCUSSES GROWING UP IN THE HIBS ACADEMY, HER RECENT GOALSCORING RUN AND THAT FREE-KICK IN THE CUP FINAL. Firstly, where in Edinburgh did you grow up and where did you go to school? SH: I was born in Granton but my mum's had more houses than cities, I was raised mainly in Leith from an age I remember. I attended Kirk Newton Primary School and then Leith Academy High School. When were you first introduced to football and did you play for your school team? SH: I was introduced by my dad and granddad from the age of 4. I played with school team with my sister which was fun. She now does beauty and I’m still here. Can you give us an insight into the early days of your football career? What was the first club that you joined and at what age? SH: The first club for me was Edina Hibs. It was a

boys team. I remember I went to them as a right back, doing foul throws for days! I then went to

"THE ACADEMY WAS GREAT FOR ME AS THEY ALLOWED ME TO BE FREE TO PLAY AT AN ABILITY LEVEL THAT CHALLENGED ME. IF I WAS GOOD ENOUGH TO MOVE UP THEY WOULD PUSH ME ON TO MAKE SURE I WAS REACHING THE BEST OF MY POTENTIAL." Hibs U13s and here I am at the first team 14 years later. What made joining

Hibernian the right choice for you at such a young age? SH: Hibernian is a huge part of my family. I was raised in an all Hibs family and used to go to Hibs games with my granddad and dad with the full club kit on. So the decision was easy for me and something I am proud of. You are one of the players who has come right through the academy system here at Hibernian. Can you give us an insight into the academy and what it did to improve your game? SH: The academy was great for me as they allowed me to be free to play at an ability level that challenged me. If I was good enough to move up they would push me on to make sure I was reaching the best of my potential. I think it’s a great club to be at

if you want to reach for a professional contract. I would push anyone to work hard and keep working hard as it’s more than just talent that you need to get there.

dramatic U15 Scottish Youth Cup final victory against Celtic on penalties. What do you remember about that day and were you one of the penalty takers?

Have you always played as a central defender or did you play other positions growing up?

SH: I remember the game being so tight, a game were it could have went either way. So tense and such an incredible game. It was always

SH: I actually started as a striker and have slowly got moved back, which upsets me as I’d rather be further up the pitch. My favourite position was centre midfield when I was playing with players like Caroline Weir, where I had Kirsty Smith and Claire Emslie outside me. They made me it easy for me! You were also part of an age group that featured a number of names that will be familiar to followers of Scottish Women's Football right? SH: I was part of that squad and am very thankful to have been part of it. It was great with so many players that are now playing so well in different leagues across the UK (and world!). With some of those players came that

18

"THE FREE KICK STILL COMES UP ON MY MEMORIES. I WATCH IT BACK AND THINK TO MYSELF HOW ON EARTH DID I DO THAT? IS THAT ME? THAT WILL 100% NOT HAPPEN AGAIN!" like that playing Celtic. I remember it being so warm inside Toryglen but knowing we haven’t got long left to keep pushing. It ended up going all the way to penalties where thankfully we came out on top. Everyone remembers their first goal. Can you describe you first goal

for Hibernian and the feeling that comes with hitting the back of the net for the first time? SH: My first goal for Hibernian was a long time ago but I remember it being a header. I wasn’t long in the team and I remember trying to keep calm because I was so excited but it was a high score so couldn’t celebrate too much haha. In terms of defining moments within your career I don't think anyone will ever forget that 40 yard free kick in the 2017 Scottish Cup Final against Glasgow City. Can you talk us through that incredible strike and what it meant for Hibs to secure the Scottish Cup again? SH: The free kick still comes up on my memories. I watch it back and think to myself how on earth did I do that? Is that me? That will 100% not happen again! It was a goal that I’m very proud of and that I will cherish and show my grand-kids for sure. The Scottish Cup has a special place in my heart and is special to my family so to score in the cup final was a dream come true. I loved that game and to play my

THE BIG INTERVIEW - SIOBHAN HUNTER

part just put the icing on the cake. Like many of the players here you have enjoyed a very successful career playing in the Scotland youth setup, particular through the U17 and U19 age groups. How did it feel to pull on the blue shirt and represent your country? SH: Yeah I have played all the way through youth level with Scotland and to represent your country in a sport that you love and have a true passion for is probably the best moment in my life. I enjoyed it and learned a lot from coaches and players. You have grabbed goals for Scotland as well. One of the stand out moments was the two goals scored at U17 level in a 2-0 win away to Ukraine. Can you describe the performance and how it felt to lead the team to victory away from home? SH: I remember that game so clearly. It was a 5 minute walk to the pitch down a hill and on to a weird pitch. Very strange. I

remember scoring a volley from a corner and going absolutely crazy running around the pitch and someone had to stop me running. The performance was so dominant against an opposition that were feisty and very aggressive but I think we showed our quality in the end. You have also had the

"CAPTAINING MY COUNTRY MUST BE THE BIGGEST HONOUR AND MOST PROUD ACHIEVEMENT IN MY LIFE. I THINK I CRIED WHEN I FOUND OUT. IT’S SOMETHING I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER." honour of being captain at U19 level including through the UEFA U19 Women's qualifiers. What did it mean to you to be trusted with wearing the armband and being asked to lead the country on the pitch? SH: Captaining my country must be the

biggest honour and most proud achievement in my life. I think I cried when I found out. It's something I will always remember and thank the coaches for. It was a huge responsibility but something I am proud of and always will be! You have also tasted first team action as well with substitute appearances against Iceland and Serbia. Do those appearances, combined with seeing other players come through Hibs and go on to play for Scotland entice you to feel that you can break into the Scotland squad again in the future? SH: I have got caps playing for the Scotland first team which again I am very proud of. I think I need to always aim to play for Scotland. It’s always in the back of my head but I want to make sure I’m playing well each week with my club and hope I do the right things so that my time will come. It’s hard work but when you get there it’s worth it. I think right now it’s probably too far away but something I will always thrive to get back into in the future. Back to Hibernian and

"IN ROMANIA IT WAS TOUGH TO TAKE AS WE WERE EXTREMELY CLOSE TO REACHING THE GOAL BUT THAT’S THE NATURE OF FOOTBALL AND SOMETIMES IT’S VERY HARSH. I THINK WE KNEW THIS TIME WHAT WE HAD TO DO AND HOW WE WERE GOING TO ACHIEVE THAT GOAL. WE PLAYED GREAT FOOTBALL WITH A DIFFERENT TEAM EACH GAME."

22

23

THE BIG INTERVIEW - SIOBHAN HUNTER

looking back at the first half of the league season, how do you feel it has gone compared to previous years at the club? SH: I think we aim so high because we know we are a great side. Hence the number of players who have gone on to earn themselves professional contracts. We put a lot of pressure on ourselves and have maybe lost out on the league but we are still having a successful season. We are in last 32 of Champions League, sitting 3rd in the SWPL1, have won 1 cup and still have a great chance to retain the Scottish Cup. I think that’s a great season so far. That being said, there was cup success as the club won a fourth successive SWPL Cup by beating Glasgow City on penalties at Airdie's Excelsior Stadium. How important was that victory in really kick starting the season and reminding everyone that Hibernian are still very much one of the top teams in the country? SH: That victory was huge for our club and players because everyone knows

24

the rivalry of the two teams and how close it is. I think we deserved it on the day and it’s great to start of the season with one cup in the bag. But the next one is the big one and one we want to win that just as much if not more. Moving into the second half of the season the club has just returned

"SPENDING ALL THAT TIME WITH EACH OTHER WAS GREAT AND CAME AT A GOOD TIME AS THE GLASGOW CITY DEFEAT WAS TOUGH. WE BONDED A LOT AND GOT TO KNOW EACH OTHER A LITTLE BIT MORE." from the Champions League qualifying trip to Slovenia where the team successfully won all three of their group matches to get through the qualifying group stage for the first time. You experienced the previous trip to Romania where the team came up just short so how did it feel

to get over the line this time? SH: In Romania it was tough to take as we were extremely close to reaching the goal but that’s the nature of football and sometimes it’s very harsh. I think we knew this time what we had to do and how we were going to achieve that goal. We played great football with a different team each game. It’s something we are able to do and getting over the line was a great feeling. As a club it's not often that the players get to spend as long as eight days together as a group. How do you think the time spent in Slovenia has been beneficial to the group, especially with so many new players joining the squad in the last 6-12 months? SH: Spending all that time with each other was great and came at a good time as the Glasgow City defeat was tough. We bonded a lot and got to know each other a little bit more. It was such a focused group of players with the sole aim of getting out of the group ,which we managed to do.

THE BIG INTERVIEW - SIOBHAN HUNTER

The draw has thrown up a tie against Slavia Prague to which the club have responded by hosting the home leg at Easter Road. How exciting is it not only to be able to bring Champions League football to Edinburgh but also to play out on the pitch at Easter Road again? SH: The club have been great and backed us for our Champions League game which is great to see. I think we deserve recognition for what we have done and it’s great to have the privilege to play at the best Scottish stadium in the country... Joking aside I think for me it’s extremely special as my granddad took me to all the Hibs games when I was younger so being able to play there with him watching over me and wit all my family and friends there makes it perfect. Champions League nights at Easter Road? Perfect. Back home, there was the small matter of a second Edinburgh derby of the season against Hearts over at Oriam. Earlier in the season Hearts provided a stern test at Ainslie Park but this time Hibs came

away with a 7-1 win. You fired in the 'perfect hat-trick' with a header before half-time, a left footed effort and a right-footed penalty. What did it mean to you, not just to bag the three goals but to lead the comeback from a goal down against our city rivals?

up there with the best feelings.

"HIBS VS HEARTS IS AN EDINBURGH DERBY WHICH EVERYONE LOOKS FORWARD TO AND LOVES TO PLAY IN. TO SCORE 1 GOAL IS AMAZING BUT TO SCORE 3 IS PROBABLY UP THERE WITH THE BEST FEELINGS."

SH: I think you can say that again. I’ve improved different parts of my game that I have needed to improve, I still have a lot to improve and I will in the remaining time, but yeah I think this is probably the best season of mine. I can’t believe I’m second at the club for goals scored that’s hilarious, I will take it! I’ll try my best to keep that big head of mine on the end of crosses.

SH: I’m still confused at how this happened. I’ve had so many messages asking what’s wrong, how it happened and I just can’t believe it happened! Hibs vs Hearts is an Edinburgh derby which everyone looks forward to and loves to play in. To score 1 goal is amazing but to score 3 is probably

Looking ahead slightly, this is clearly a huge second half to the season for Hibernian with the Champions League, Scottish Cup and some big home games in the league still to come. What message would you send out to anyone who might be looking to come along to their first match?

Is it fair to say that 2019 is possibly your best season yet from a personal perspective? Certainly looking at goals scored you currently sit second in the team with 8 goals in all competitions which is hugely impressive for a centre back!

27

THE BIG INTERVIEW - SIOBHAN HUNTER

SH: I think a lot of people that come along for the first time are very surprised. You get it quite a lot, they come to a big game and are like "wow they were better than I expected". I think we deserve a bigger fan base. Spectators taking interest and kids looking up to us makes it so much easier for us and I would ask people to come and watch us to give us the support I think we need and deserve. Do you have any personal goals or objectives for the remainder of this season? SH: Score another Hattrick? Kidding haha but I think just keep up with the goal tally and get as many clean sheets as I can but also keep my performances to a consistent level that I can maintain. I want to be able to challenge myself in every game and set standards within myself that help the team. Most people have a club that they support. What team do you follow and why? SH: If you didn’t know already I’m a huge Hibs fan. I have been going

28

to their games since I was 4 and I still go now. I followed Hibs because of my granddad and dad, but now I’ve rubbed that off to my nephew. I also support Liverpool but I’m unsure how that came about but think it’s a

"MY FOOTBALLING HERO WHEN I WAS YOUNG WAS JULIE FLEETING, I USED TO GET MY MUM TO BUY ME POSTERS OF HER IN HER ARSENAL KIT AND PUT THEM IN MY ROOM. SHE WAS SOMEONE I ALWAYS LOOKED UP TO, BEING SCOTTISH AND PERFORMING SO WELL IN THE TOP LEAGUE." pretty good choice? Do you have any footballing role models from the professional game or that you have played with? SH: My footballing hero

when I was young was Julie Fleeting, I used to get my mum to buy me posters of her in her Arsenal kit and put them in my room. She was someone I always looked up to, being Scottish and performing so well in the top league. My male role model was Steven Gerrard as he was such a good passer and covered the ground so well. One I’ve played with is probably Caroline Weir. She has everything! Someone who just worked so hard to get where she is now. Did you see that goal for Manchester City vs Manchester United? Everyone loves a bit of fashion and these days boots are no exception. What is your choice of footwear on the pitch this season? SH: My choice is black Adidas boots but recently just purchased black Nikes. I used to wear bright boots but I thought with my position I better go to black. Obviously you are still young and have years of playing time ahead of you but have you made any plans to get involved in coaching or other aspects of football that would

29

30

THE BIG INTERVIEW - SIOBHAN HUNTER

see you potential stay involved after you finish playing? SH: That was kind and you are probably the first person who has said that. I get slagged from all my friends for being so old. Coaching is something I also love doing and have done it before and would love to go back to teach children to improve their game and watch them grow into professional footballers. I am interested in the sport science side of the game too. I completed a honours degree in that specialty so would love to also do that as a job after football. Who are the best players you have played alongside and against? SH: The best players I have played alongside have to be Caroline Weir, Kim Little and Rachael Boyle. The best player I’ve played against is Stefanie van der Gragt who played with Bayern Munich. She was just a great centre back that I had to mark at corners and she was probably about 2 foot taller than me! Also Miedema who now plays with Kim Little at Arsenal is the best

striker I’ve ever played against. She could come to feet, go long, take you on, defend. She had everything. She was simply a quality player all round. Can you tell us something about yourself that we don't know?

"SOMETHING YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME IS I’VE FEATURED ON THE YOU’VE BEEN FRAMED CHRISTMAS DAY SPECIAL. I MADE MYSELF DIZZY THEN FELL INTO A LAMP AND SMASHED IT. I GOT £250 FOR IT THOUGH HAHA!" SH: Something you don’t know about me is I’ve featured on the You’ve Been Framed Christmas Day special. I made myself dizzy then fell into a lamp and smashed it. I got £250 for it though haha! Who is the most famous person you have ever

met? SH: The most famous person I have ever met is Alan Carr at the wax museum. Does that count? Music. Lia seems to like taking charge of the tunes on the bus but who do you enjoy listening to and what is the best gig you have ever been to? SH: Yeah she takes charge on the bus and the bus only thankfully! I enjoy listening to house music. Soundcloud is a great app to listen to. The best gig I’ve ever been to is Beyoncé. She was unbelievable. Incredible singing and dancing. What is your favourite movie of all time? SH: My favourite movie of all time has to be Matilda. I use to do the light trick when I was younger when my mum and dad would change the lights and I thought I was doing it.

NEWS SCOTLAND DEFEAT CYPRUS AT EASTER ROAD Scotland cruised past Cyprus 8-0 in their first match since the World Cup in France during the summer. Over 6,200 fans were in support of the national side in the capital, the second highest ever attendance for a SWNT home match. Kerr was ‘delighted’ with both her team’s performance and the support behind them. She said: “That’s what we’re here for. We’re here for football. “It was great tonight in the capital in a great stadium and fantastic support. The national team have done well on the back off qualification and the supporters are coming to see women’s football. “It shows there’s an appetite for the women’s game and

getting increased crowds is so important. “It is important for the whole country to support so it’s something that we’ll look at, but it was certainly a success to have it in Edinburgh at Easter Road.” Four Hibernian players were called up to the national side but due to injury, Amy Muir was forced to pull out the squad. However, the Scotland boss was high of praise for her and Jamie-Lee Napier, with the belief that the future is bright for the pair.

Former Hibernian striker, Claire Emslie opened the scoring at Easter Road. She said it was a dream come true to score a goal at the club she grew up playing for. Emslie said: “I was really excited to play at Easter Road when we found out it was going to be here. “Growing up with Kirsty Smith, Caroline Weir, Lizzie Arnot, we all grew up playing at Hibs and I’ve never played here but I always wanted to. I’m buzzing to score here.”

She added: “I went to watch them both at the under 19s finals in the summer. What I would say about both of them is that they’re hungry to be successful. They’ve got aspirations to play at the highest level. It’s a credit to them, their attitude is fantastic.

Another former Hibernian player, Kim Little netted five of Scotland’s eight goals on Friday night. She said she loved playing in Edinburgh and would welcome another match at Easter Road. She said: “In terms of the result, not conceding, scored some really nice goals, I think it’s what we wanted from the night.

“I was actually so disappointed for Amy that she got injured. Can you imagine that, your first call up and you get injured, so she’s gutted but I’m sure she’ll get other opportunities. Jamie-Lee has come in and she’s learning off senior players as well so it’s fantastic for them.”

“I very much enjoyed being here at Easter Road. I love being in Edinburgh so it’s always nice to come back and I think it’s a really nice stadium to play in. Good to get six thousand at the game. I’m not sure what the plan is going forward with that, but I very much enjoyed playing here.”

WILLIAMSON JOINS HEARTS ON LOAN FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON Hibernian Ladies defender Clare Williamson has joined Heart of Midlothian on loan until the end of the season. Clare is looking to get back to full fitness after almost two years out of the game through injury and is hoping for some additional minutes with the SWPL 2 side. Hibernian Head Coach Grant Scott hopes to see her back fighting for a first-team place in pre-season and said: “Clare is one of the longestserving players in our squad and has found it difficult to get back in the team after her time out. “Our aim is to get her

playing matches, which we hope she can do at Hearts – gaining the valuable minutes she needs to come back even stronger. “Clare has been a terrific servant to this club and we hope she’s back fighting for her position come preseason. “I must also say a thank you to Hearts’ Kevin Murphy, who has been great to deal with. “He was understanding of our position and Clare’s. They’re obviously hoping to benefit from having a topclass player competing in their squad.”

HAMILTON ACADEMICAL

F

ollowing relegation from the SWPL1 last season, Hamilton are looking to bounce right back into the top flight as they lead a hotly contested battle in SWPL2. It was a tough start to the season for Hamilton picking up only two wins in their first five fixtures. Despite putting in some dominant displays the lack of goals combined with defensive lapses looked like derailing their hopes of a quick return to SWPL1. However the Accies have battled hard since to earn results and boast a record that has seen them undefeated since the end of April. They arrive at Ainslie Park coming off the back of a 2-2 draw with title rivals Hearts which will give them the confidence to have

40

a go at Hibernian in the same way Hearts did in the previous round. Hamilton have enjoyed a relatively light cup run thus far with a third round bye against Kilwinning followed up by a 12-0 victory over SWFL2 West/Central outfit Clyde. Their only test against SWPL1 opposition this season came against Spartans in the SWPL Cup where they were beaten 0-4 at home. While a place in the semi-final is at stake on Sunday, the Accies will have one eye on Petershill Park where Partick Thistle battle Hearts in the SWPL2. A win for Partick would bring them back into the promotion fight while a Hearts victory would put Hamilton in the position of having to chase albeit having played a game less.

LAST MEETING HAMILTON ACADEMICAL 2 HIBERNIAN 4

The teams met towards the end of last season with Hibernian firmly in the title race and Accies looking to secure points to beat the drop. Harrison opened the scoring for Hibs but a goal from Ross drew Hamilton level only for Michie to see Hibs ahead going into the break. A Fitzsimmons own goal extended Hibs lead just after the break but Gardiner's strike reduced the deficit to a single goal with just over an hour played. Hibs eventually secured all three points with a late Abi Harrison effort.

WORDS BY CRAIG DOYLE

I

t has been a busy few weeks for our academy U23 team as they have continued their SWFL1 South season by picking up 7 points from the last 9 available. An Edinburgh derby saw the U23s make the short trip to Meggetland Sports Complex to face Boroughmuir Thistle. With the hosts having made a number of quality additions including Lucy Brown and Margaux Durand-Watson since the sides last met it was always going to be a tough ask for a depleted U23 squad featuring two call-ups from the U15 National Performance squad. Coach Dean Gibson praised the side for a solid performance in what he felt was an 'enjoyable game' that offered a learning experience for his players but hinted that despite the team excelling in some areas that they would be looking to improve in others going forward.

44

A return to Hibernian Training Centre followed with the visit of promotion chasing Renfrew Ladies. With the first team squad not playing due to the international break and the U23s still suffering from injuries Cailin Michie, Shannon Leishman and Jeni Currie were all made available to assist with maintaining match fitness. The addition of the first team players proved key in a first half where Hibernian dominated the possession, particularly down the right hand side of the park where both Michie and Leishman were able to link up. Leishman opened the scoring by beating the offside trap before turning provider twice for Anna Dickov to grab a double and put Hibs 3-0 up within 15 minutes. As halftime approached Michie showed her quality with a lovely solo run, followed by a neat 1-2 that allowed her into the box to lay the ball up for Aitchison to tap into an empty net.

ACADEMY - UNDER 23

The hat-trick almost arrived for Dickov early in the second half as she just failed to get the final touch on a ball that was diverted into the net by a Renfrew defender. Aitchison added a sixth before Dickov finally completed her hat-trick in fortuitous fashion. Renfrew's keeper saved well from Adams penalty and did brilliant to keep out Dickov's attempt from the rebound but the ball was eventually bundled home by Adams, via Dickov to round out the scoring. The trip to Hamilton saw a number of changes

46

to the U23 squad with first team players again featuring in a bid to improve sharpness ahead of the UWCL fixture against Slavia Praha. Jeni Currie again took the spot between the sticks with Lia Tweedie this time looking to improve her match fitness following a short spell out with an ankle injury sustained in Slovenia. Regular goalkeeper Alicia Yates was handed a call-up to the first team squad as backup for Jenna Fife in the fixture away to Spartans. On the pitch it was Lia Tweedie who impressed, bagging a hat-trick with a

second half chip over the goalkeeper the pick of her goals. The U23s had gone in at half-time three goals to the good with efforts from Tweedie, Hay and Aitchison, The first team striker adding two further goals in the second half to complete a 5-0 victory in a rare match at this level played on a grass surface. There is no U23 action this weekend. The first team SSE Scottish Cup quarter-final has resulted in the potential catch-up fixture against Queens Park being postponed. The U23s will return to action on Aug 22nd at home to Celtic Academy.

MATCH ACTION

KEY MOMENT

With Hearts taking an early lead and restricting Hibs to efforts from distance it was Siobhan Hunter who drew Hibs level. The centre half powered home a header from a corner for her second SSE Scottish Cup goal in successive games.

PERFECT HAT-TRICK

Hunter added to her first half header with a brilliantly taken left-footed strike from the edge of the area before converting a right-footed penalty to complete her 'perfect hat-trick'.

PRESS REACTION

“Hibernian handed out a Scottish Cup hammering to Edinburgh rivals Hearts with a 7-1 thumping at the Oriam. Hearts briefly threatened a shock with the opening goal, but Hibs - holders of the trophy for the past three seasons - eased into the quarter-finals." BBC SPORT SCOTLAND

WHO SAID WHAT?

“It's great we don't always play Hearts often enough but I think it's great for the club, it's great for the players to play in and to see such a good crowd come along it's nice.” SIOBHAN HUNTER

SSE SCOTTISH CUP MEMORIES

A DIFFERENT

DERBY

AT THIS STAGE OF THE CUP LAST SEASON HIBERNIAN FACED EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY HUTCHISON VALE IN A DERBY NEVER TO BE REPEATED.

T

his quarter-final stage of the 2018 SSE Scottish Cup saw an Edinburgh Derby first as Hibernian were drawn away to SWPL2 side Edinburgh University Hutchison Vale. Of course Hutchison Vale were no strangers to Hibernian having last played in the top flight of Scottish Women's Football back in 2015 when the top tier consisted of twelve clubs. Playing only once, away at Saughton Enclosure, Hibernian ran out 4-0 victors with Hutchison Vale eventually going on to be relegated as the SWF switched format to the current SWPL1 and SWPL2 divisions. Ahead of the 2017 season Hutchison Vale formed a partnership with Edinburgh University, installing Mike Ross and Tom Connor as first team coaches. The former solidified the link with Edinburgh University and allowed a depleted Hutchison Vale squad to be enhance by incoming players from the fast expanding University football programme. Going into the match Hibernian were in fine form remaining undefeated in all competitions and having reached the quarter-finals with an emphatic victory away at Thistle Weir (now Partick Thistle) and a bye over Dundee United. Hutchison Vale's path saw them also tally up 7 goals against

Hawick United before a shock victory over SWPL1 side, and today's visitors to Ainslie Park, Hamilton Academical. The match itself was played at Edinburgh University's Peffermill Sports Complex but not on the 3G astro pitch with upon which Hibernian were used to training and EUHV played their home fixtures. To mark the special occasion the game took place on the grass stadium pitch regularly used by the Edinburgh University Lowland League side. A notable Hibernian highlight from the day was the welcome return of Hibernian captain Joelle Murray to the starting line-up, leading the team out after sustaining a double-break of the fibula earlier in the season against Celtic at K-Park. Surprisingly it was EUHV who almost produced a shock opening as a mix up in the Hibs defence allowed Kat Smart to capitalise and flash a shot across Jenna Fife but just narrowly wide of the far post. The early scare shocked Hibs into life and they took the lead in the 5th minute as McLauchlin's cross was turned home by an EUHV defender. With the rain smashing down, the floodgates soon opened with EUHV unable to contain the pace of the Hibernian attack featuring McLauchlin

55

SSE SCOTTISH CUP MEMORIES

and Harrison. By half-time Hibs had netted seven times with Davidson and McLauchlin both firing twice to compliment goals from Hunter and Harrison. The second half saw more oneway traffic with HIbs adding a further four goals through Michie, Tweedie, Robertson and Napier to rack up an impressive 11-0 scoreline that underlined a very complete performance on the day. With the partnership between Hutchison Vale and Edinburgh University coming to an end at the close of the 2018 season It is unlikely that Hibernian will ever see another derby with EUHV making this a real one-off for the history books. Continuing the theme, today's visit of Hamilton Academical sees one member of that Edinburgh University Hutchison Vale team in the visitor's squad. Midfielder Nichola Sturrock made the switch to the Accies at the end of last season with Gary Doctor bringing the number ten in to add both experience and creativity to his attacking options.
