EDITOR WELCOME TO AINSLIE PARK FOR THE FIRST OF THREE SUCCESSIVE HOME FIXTURES AS THE SEASON DRAWS TO A CLOSE

F

irstly I would like to issue a huge congratulations to Scott Booth and his team at Glasgow City for their recent success in retaining the SWPL1 title. The club is a shining example to all within Scottish Women's Football of how to push the boundaries of what is possible and maintain high standards over the long term. Curiously my interest was drawn to comments made on social media through the week about the choice of venue for the SWPL1 title clinching match between Motherwell and Glasgow City. While it is clear that the Wishaw Sports Centre venue was not the ideal showcase for such a marquee fixture I do feel that Motherwell have taken a lot of stick for events likely out-with their control. To put a Hibernian twist on this topic we have played at a staggering five 'home venues' this season. One of the huge challenges clubs are faced with in Scottish Women's Football is trying to arrange a venue to play mid-week matches. Our recent game against Forfar Farmington is a prime example of the difficulties of getting a game on. Especially when under instruction by the SWF to have the game played. We initially wanted to play the match on the Wednesday evening but as always Ainslie Park was fully booked with it's regular mid-week activities. Our alternate venue of Peffermill also could not accommodate us due to the return

of University BUCS fixtures. We reached out to Penicuik where we had a successful evening earlier in the year against Stirling University but again we had no joy. Even our own facilities at Hibernian Training Centre were unavailable due to other teams using the pitch. In the end we moved the game to the Tuesday where we utilised our own training slot at HTC to get the game on. It is a venue that we are aware does not meet the SWPL1 criteria but under pressure to have the fixture played it was the best option available to us. In my opinion the standards within Scottish Women's Football have improved massively over the last few years. However we are not where we want to be yet and I believe everyone is actively pushing the standards forward. The situation with venues will undoubtedly be addressed in the close season but I think everyone should take a moment to appreciate how far we have come. Simple things many of us take for granted these days such as photographs, video highlights, manager interviews, full on social media accounts etc from almost every SWPL level club were not common five years ago. We are taking strides forward and there will be hurdles to overcome but I think we are moving in the right direction. Enjoy the match this afternoon!

ur last home match last week against Rangers saw another flurry of goals from the side once again and the scoreline of 8-0 was very impressive from the girls. Goals shared throughout the side too which is really pleasing and continues to show that we have threats from all over the field and confident players taking opportunities that we’ve created.

THE MANAGER

Today’s match sees the final league match between ourselves and City and we have a burning desire to get this league win over our biggest rivals over recent years. On the flip side, I know there will be a determination from City to keep their league run against Hibs going and indeed go though another season undefeated, they have an incredible record but hopefully we can upset that on the day. I’ve said on record recently that we love a match against City. The intensity of the build-up, the fierce competition in the match, is what sport is all about. Yes both sides want to win but there is good and I think mutual respect between the sides, players and staffs while that competition is going on and most definitely before and after which is equally important in sport. Both sets of players know each other well so it’s always difficult to predict who will stand out on the day, there’s various threats in both squads and any one of the 22 on the field could be the match winner. At the time of writing we’re having a decent week of training, everyone looks in good shape and fairly relaxed (hopefully not too relaxed come Sunday) so we aim to compete well in the game and try to get the win.

KEY MOMENT

Colette Cavanagh is proving a thorn in the side for Motherwell in recent times. The midfielder again was instrumental in breaking their resistance. First by doubling Hibs advantage and then by winning the penalty that saw Rachael Boyle put Hibs four goals ahead.

THE GAFFER

"I'm really pleased for Amy. She's been terrific since she joined the club and was really unfortunate to get injured in the Scottish Cup a couple of rounds ago. At that point she was just finding her feet with us and with any player coming into this group it's a challenge to get into the eleven and hold your place down. She looks almost back to her best and I'm delighted she scored."

WHO SAID WHAT?

“I'm delighted to eventually get my first goal. I didn't expect it to be a header to be honest but it was a great ball in and I was just delighted to finish it. It was a good moment to score and we really stepped it up after that.” AMY MUIR

THE BIG INTERVIEW - RACHAEL BOYLE

RACHAEL

BOYLE

THE MIDFIELDER OPENS UP ABOUT PLAYING FOR SCOTLAND AND HER RETURN AFTER GIVING BIRTH TO HER DAUGHTER LAST YEAR. Rachael, you’re closing in on your fourth season with Hibernian. How have these last few years been playing for the club? RB: I’ve really enjoyed my time with the club so far, there has been a lot of turnover in players (and for a period in the middle, coaches) but the training environment has remained competitive. I have learnt a lot from my time at the club. How did it feel when you made your debut for the club? RB: I was a bit nervous making my debut as I was returning from injury at the time and knew that I had to play to my full potential to try and show my new team mates that I was worthy of representing the club. You’ve scored quite a few goals in recent matches but how did it feel when that first one struck the back of the

net? RB: Relief! This team is used to scoring a lot of goals throughout a season. I didn’t want to be the only one in the squad

"IT HAS PROBABLY BEEN THE MOST REWARDING YEAR OF MY LIFE SO FAR. WHEN YOU’VE HAD A BAD GAME OR TRAINING SESSION YOU GET TO GO HOME AND ONE SMILE FROM THE WEE ONE CHEERS YOU UP."

(except the GK’s) not to have scored a goal. You missed a large portion of last season through pregnancy and

became a mother in September of last year. How has the last year of parenthood been for yourself? RB: It has probably been the most rewarding year of my life so far. When you’ve had a bad game or training session you get to go home and one smile from the wee one cheers you up. For any parent it’s a challenge balancing a career with raising children. How has this challenge been for yourself and Martin? RB: It has been hard at times, but we are fortunate to have family and friends who help us out when we have football commitments to attend. It’s true what they say, ‘it takes a village to raise a child!’ Your daughter has been along to a couple of our games this season. Having both parents’ careers involving

21

THE BIG INTERVIEW - RACHAEL BOYLE

football, is it safe to say you would like her to play the game too one day? RB: I would love her to play, and Martin keeps telling her that she can make a professional career out of it, so I think he will help me steer her in the direction of football. Although we have agreed that we won’t be forcing her. You and Martin married early this year. With that came a change of name on the back of your shirt. Some footballers keep their maiden name on their shirt after marriage, however, was this a straight forward decision for yourself to make the change? RB: For me it was easy, I wanted the same name as my daughter. Everyone still calls me ‘Smally’ anyway so the maiden name lives on. You’ve played within Scottish football for around a decade, how do you feel the professional scene has changed in that time? RB: It has massively improved in every aspect. I remember playing for Aberdeen ladies when I was 15 and we were

22

travelling to an away game against Glasgow City. The team bus stopped in Dundee for a toilet break and when we all got back on the bus a couple of the players

"I STARTED PLAYING FOOTBALL WHEN I WAS THREE IN THE GARDEN WITH MY DAD AND BROTHER THEN WHEN I WAS SIX I PLAYED IN THE SAME TEAM AS MY OLDER BROTHER BECAUSE MY DAD RUN THE TEAM. I PLAYED FOR BOTH MY PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL BEFORE MOVING ONTO GIRLS FOOTBALL."

walked on with double cheeseburger meals from Burger King. Safe to say, we didn’t win! When were you first introduced to football

and did you play for your school team? RB: I started playing football when I was three in the garden with my dad and brother then when I was six I played in the same team as my older brother because my dad run the team. I played for both my primary & secondary school before moving onto girls football when I became too old to play with the boys. Can you give us an insight into the early days of your football career? What was the first club that you joined and at what age? RB: I always played in boys teams right up until the age limit allowed me to. I started off at Stoneywood Boys club at the age of six until I moved to Northfield FC at under 12s. I then had to stop playing with the boys and joined Aberdeen Girls under 17s where I played for one year before getting moved up to the Ladies team when I was 15. You’ve played as a defender and midfielder during your time at the club, but did you play other positions growing up?

23

24

THE BIG INTERVIEW - RACHAEL BOYLE

RB: I always played full back or centre back mainly. I only recently started playing midfield when my coach at Aberdeen Ladies put me in there a few years ago. Hibernian are through to another Scottish Cup final against Sunday’s opponents, Glasgow City. Firstly, how does it feel to reach another final with this group of players? RB: I am delighted to be back in another Scottish Cup final. I missed the final last year so I can’t wait for the 24th of November. Despite bagging a goal and two assists against Motherwell in the semi-final, you said post-match that you weren’t happy with your performance. You certainly made up for it with a hat-trick against Rangers last weekend. Is that your mentality as a player, that you’re always looking for improvement regardless of the result? RB: I have always been self-critical when it comes to my performances. I have my own standards and know that I didn’t meet those standards against Motherwell.

With regards to Glasgow City, how big a challenge do they pose at Tynecastle next month? RB: It is going to be a massive challenge. Everyone knows how good a team Glasgow City are. People expect them to win as we have lost our way

"THE TRAINING CENTRE HAS BEEN EXCELLENT FOR US THIS SEASON. TO HAVE ACCESS TO EVERYTHING WE NEED IN ONE PLACE IS FIRST CLASS. PHYSIO, GYM, ANALYSIS, GRASS PITCHES, ASTROTURF, WE ARE LEFT WANTING FOR NOTHING WHEN WE TURN UP TO TRAINING." in the league this season. However, people wrote us off before the league cup final earlier this year so we have to go into the game with confidence next month. They travel to Ainslie Park on Sunday having

wrapped up the SWPL 1 title. Do you expect a changed side from them now that their title push is wrapped up? RB: I think they have the strength and depth to play anyone in their starting 11. I know their players will be solely focused on us come Sunday but I would imagine their management team will have one eye looking ahead towards Brondby. There has been some backlash on the faculties used for City’s match away to Motherwell on Wednesday. Moving the dialogue slightly away from there and focusing on faculties teams in the league have access too, how beneficial has it been for the squad to have access to Hibernian’s Training Centre? RB: The training centre has been excellent for us this season. To have access to everything we need in one place is first class. Physio, gym, analysis, grass pitches, astroturf, we are left wanting for nothing when we turn up to training. Are those the key differences for bridging the gap between amateur and

25

26

27

THE BIG INTERVIEW - RACHAEL BOYLE

professional football in Scotland? To have facilities accessible at clubs like Hibernian? RB: It definitely helps make everything that bit more professional to have facilities like we do at Hibs. Means we can still have the injured players integrated with the squad as they rehab in the gym etc. Moving over to Scotland and congratulations on being called back up to the national squad for the upcoming match against Albania. How does it feel to be back involved? RB: Thank you. I’m delighted to be back involved. I’ve been in and out of the squad for a number of reasons over the years so hopefully I can try and keep my place in the squad. You’ve made 31 appearances for the senior squad with the last coming at the start of 2018. What’s the feeling like when you pull on that Scotland strip? RB: It’s always a special moment representing your country. I’m very proud to say that I have played for my country.

28

Albania is quite a special place for this group having secured World Cup qualification there over a year ago. What did you make of Scotland’s first World Cup in the summer?

"THIS IS MY FIRST SEASON BACK FROM BEING OUT OF THE GAME FOR A WHILE, SO I DON’T FEEL LIKE I AM FULLY AT MY BEST, BUT I CERTAINLY DIDN’T THINK THAT I’D BE BACK PLAYING AND GETTING SELECTED FOR SCOTLAND AGAIN SO QUICKLY AFTER GIVING BIRTH." RB: I thought they did well but was overshadowed by VAR and having it end the way it did for the team was disappointing but hopefully the disappointment will push the team on for this campaign.

Scotland Head Coach, Shelley Kerr was down at Ainslie Park for last weekend’s match against Rangers. I can only assume that you were already in her plans before kick off but scoring a hat-trick certainly didn’t do yourself any harm. Do you feel now that you’re potentially in the best moment of your career so far? RB: This is my first season back from being out of the game for a while, so I don’t feel like I am fully at my best, but I certainly didn’t think that I’d be back playing and getting selected for Scotland again so quickly after giving birth. There’s a frame at Ainslie Park that has a line-up and signed pennants for a Scotland under-19s match against Denmark. If I’m correct in saying I believe yourself is named in the starting line-up. What do you recall from your time in Scotland’s youth setup? RB: I loved my time with the youth squads. A particular highlight was getting selected for the under 19s when I was still playing under 17s. Getting to play in two European

championship finals with two completely different teams was special to me. There are some players in the Hibernian squad who have just wrapped up or still enjoying the Scotland call in the youth department. How beneficial is it for them to be able to go away with Scotland and have competitive games against nations across Europe and rest of the world? RB: It’s huge. The experience they gain in the national team environment can only help develop their game as well as improving them off the pitch as-well. You learn how to conduct yourself on the pitch and in your everyday life. With regards to youth in general, this is a relatively young Hibernian squad and as a result has seen yourself being one of the more senior members of the group. Do you feel a responsibility to lead this group at times alongside players like Joelle Murray for example? RB: The girls like to point out our age gaps every now and then but me and Joelle quickly bring them

back down to earth. The kids know their place. Back to Sunday, games against teams like Glasgow City must be the ones the squad relish to play in? RB: It is always our toughest games of the season when we play

"IT IS ALWAYS OUR TOUGHEST GAMES OF THE SEASON WHEN WE PLAY CITY BUT IF YOU DON’T LOOK FORWARD TO IT AS A HIBS PLAYER THEN YOU ARE AT THE WRONG CLUB. EVERYONE WANTS TO BE CHALLENGING THEMSELVES AGAINST THE BEST." City but if you don’t look forward to it as a Hibs player then you are at the wrong club. Everyone wants to be challenging themselves against the best. It’s now 10 wins domestically in a row for Hibernian. It’s an

incredible record and one the squad I can imagine will be looking to continue against Sunday’s opponent? RB: It is a good run of form, but it has come too late in the league campaign for this squad. We want to continue this form till the end of the season to set us in good stead for trying to challenge for the league again next season. There are some big matches coming up as we near the end of the season. What message would you send out to anyone who might be looking to come along to their first match? RB: Jamie-Lee Napier is always happy to pose for photos with anyone who will give her the time of day… and we are not bad either. Do you have any personal goals or objectives for the remainder of this season? RB: Personally, I want to play to my full potential every game and see if I can help the team win more silverware. Most people have a club that they support. What team do you follow and

31

THE BIG INTERVIEW - RACHAEL BOYLE

why? RB: I have split loyalties. Aberdeen because I grew up there, but Hibs has a fond place in my heart since I’ve been supporting Martin at every game. Sunshine on Leith gets me every time. Do you have any footballing role models from the professional game or that you have played with? RB: I grew up watching Man Utd so loved watching Beckham, Giggs, Scholesy. Everyone loves a bit of fashion and these days boots are no exception. What is your choice of footwear on the pitch this season? RB: I’ve went for grey/red Nike VNM’s this season. I have been eyeing up Amy G’s bright yellow Nike’s but I am far to stingy to be paying a fortune for boots these days. Obviously, you still have quite a few years left in your playing career, but have you made any plans to get involved in coaching or other aspects of football that would see you potential stay involved after you finish playing?

32

RB: I am just delighted if I make it to the next training session on a daily basis so no plans have been made. I will wait and see if Amelia wants to get involved in a team and whether she allows me to help out or not. Who are the best

"I HAVE SPLIT LOYALTIES. ABERDEEN BECAUSE I GREW UP THERE, BUT HIBS HAS A FOND PLACE IN MY HEART SINCE I’VE BEEN SUPPORTING MARTIN AT EVERY GAME. SUNSHINE ON LEITH GETS ME EVERY TIME." players you have played alongside and against? RB: Playing alongside Kim Little and Caroline Weir is always a pleasure. They make the game look easy. I’ve played against Abby Wambach so trying to shoulder barge her or win

a header proved to be a bit difficult, but the whole team were world class. Can you tell us something about yourself that we don't know? RB: I almost quit football at the age of 21. Who is the most famous person you have ever met? RB: Joelle Murray. Music. Who do you enjoy listening to and what is the best gig you have ever been to? RB: I enjoy listening to anyone but Lia Tweedie trying to hit a Sam Smith or Lewis Capaldi high note. I can’t skip past Westlife or Beyonce in the car. Beyonce in Glasgow is the best I’ve ever seen live. What is your favourite movie of all time? RB: Too many to pick from. One of my first favourites was Dumb & Dumber.

NEWS YATES AND ADAMS HELP SCOTLAND U17S QUALIFY Young Hibernian stars Alicia Yates and Eilidh Adams assisted in getting Pauline MacDonald's Scotland U17 squad into the Elite Round of the UEFA Under 17 Women's European Championships. Goalkeeper Yates, who recently made her Hibernian first team debut assumed the captaincy for her country and made a number of fantastic saves as Scotland qualified second from their group. For Eilidh Adams it was her first call up to the U17 level at just 16-year-old. The striker came off the bench twice and showed flashes of the quality that have seen her rise through the ranks at Hibernian into the U23 team playing in

SWFL 1. The young Scottish team made an impressive start to their tournament against Northern Ireland at Oriam. A lightning fast start saw the Scots score four times in the first half leaving their opponents with a mountain to climb in the second period. Although Northern Ireland did claw a goal back in the second half it wasn't enough to prevent Scotland starting their campaign with a huge victory. Three days later, that initial success was followed by perhaps one of the best displays of football seen from a Scotland U17 team in a long time against Montenegro. Much like the previous

game the young Scots hit the ground running and fired in three goals in a dominant first half performance. Credit should also go to Montenegro goalkeeper who produced a series of fine stops to keep the match almost within sight going into the second half. That resistance didn't last long after the break though as Scotland quickly wrapped up the scoring with a fourth to secure their qualification into the Elite Round next year. Unfortunately Scotland were unable to finish the group as winners, as they lost out to Italy in the final group game held at Ainslie Park. A strong Italian side took a leaf from Scotland's book and despite some fantastic saves from Yates, Scotland went in three goals down at the break. A further Italian goal in the second half secured the points and first place in the group for the visitors. Pauline MacDonald's side now go into the draw for the Elite Round which will take place in November with fixtures due to take place in Spring 2020 as teams look to qualify for the finals held in Sweden next summer.

GLASGOW CITY

I

t has been yet another history making season for Scotland's most successful women's club. Glasgow City wrapped up a thirteenth successive title mid-week with a dominant 0-10 scoreline away to Motherwell. The champions are now unbeaten in the league since mid 2016 when they lost at home to Spartans and sit three games away from a second successive season of accumulating maximum points in the league. Their impressive displays have not just been limited to the domestic game though as their UEFA Women's Champions League campaign continues on Thursday evening as they bring home a 2-0 advantage going into the second leg of their tie with Brondby. Success will see City through to the quarter-final stage again and

38

boost Scotland's chances of seeing two teams in the competition in future years. The only blemish on Glasgow City's record this season has been the SWPL Cup Final where Hibernian were able to keep City out for a 120 minutes before reclaiming the cup in a penalty shoot-out. Scott Booth has an impressively balanced squad at his disposal which blends experienced Scottish internationals with upcoming young stars. Today's match may lack the importance of previous fixtures but City will look to defend their league record against Hibs which stretches back to 2013 and build on momentum ahead of the SSE Scottish Cup Final next month.

Midfielder scored the only goal in first meeting in 2019.

20 CARLY GIRASOLI

17-year old centre half burst onto scene in 2018 season.

9 SCOTT BOOTH

Now in his fifth year at Glasgow City, the gaffer has recently put pen to paper on a deal that will keep him with the club until the end of 2021. With the SWPL 1 title now secure for another season Booth's focus will undoubtedly turn to ending Hibernian's run of cup successes at Tynecastle next month.

KIRSTY HOWAT

With Abbi Grant departing the club at the start of the season Howat has stepped up to fill the void up top, firing City to the league title and herself to the top of the scoring charts.

12 JENNA CLARK

Young defender now a regular in the Glasgow City first eleven.

24 EILISH MCSORELY

Midfielder back at club for third spell joining from Sassuolo.

LAST MEETING GLASGOW CITY 2 HIBERNIAN 1

The first match following the summer break set up a showdown at Petershill Park which saw City end any hopes of Hibs getting back into the SWPL 1 title picture. A poor first 45 minutes by Hibernian saw Glasgow City dominate the play with Kirsty Howat scoring twice to put the hosts two up at the break. A much more competitive second half almost offered up a late Hibernian fightback as Jamie-Lee Napier converted in the closing minutes but much like last season Hibs title hopes ended here in a 2-1 defeat.

KEY MOMENT

With Hibs already 2-0 up, Joelle Murray stepped up and fired home a fantastic free kick from the edge of the area to put the game out of sight with only 20 minutes on the clock.

HAT-TRICK CLUB

Rachael Boyle is the fourth player to join the Hibernian hat-trick club this season. Both Jamie-Lee Napier and Lia Tweedie have netted three goals on two occasions while defender Siobhan Hunter has also fired in a treble

THE GAFFER

"Really pleased this week. That's a strong Rangers team that we've just taken out today. Most impressively from the girls is that we had a game plan this week. We watched them in their cup semi, had a look at a few bits and pieces and put some ideas to the players. They've taken it to the letter and caught Rangers out a few times today."

WHO SAID WHAT?

“I knew that I had to put on a performance today and rightly so. It was a fantastic team performance and one that we are proud of so we'll move on now to next week. RACHAEL BOYLE

WORDS BY CRAIG DOYLE

T

he Hibernian U23 Development squad go into their final game of the season having secured third place in the SWFL 1 South by picking up four points in their last two fixtures. A goalless draw with Rangers Development at Hibernian Training Centre felt like a disappointing result from a match that was fragmented by frequent refereeing stoppages. A poor opening half from Hibs U23 saw changes at a premium with neither side displaying much of the quality that they have shown over the past season. The game came to life in the second period with Hibernian U23 creating a number of opportunities but failing to find the finish to make the most of their advantage. The highlight of the encounter was Hibs eventually getting the ball in the net only for the referee to call a foul and rule the foal out.

46

Assistant coach Neil Ross commented afterwards, "I think first half there was a real lack of energy and fight which is what we asked of the girls today. I was disappointed with the first half performance but second half was much better. I can't believe we didn't score. I thought we created enough, the fight and hunger was there and I can't believe we never won. It was just unfortunate that the goal got chopped off and we couldn't create any more." Tuesday evening saw the long awaited rearranged home fixture against Queens Park take place under the lights at Hibernian Training Centre. Much like the Rangers fixture Hibernian stared off slowly in the first half with the visitors seeing most of the ball. Queens Park made their early advantage count on 20 minutes with a stunning drive from outside the box beating Alicia Yates and finding the top corner of the goal. Hibernian struggled to

get into the game as the half progressed with Queens Park looking the more likely to add to their advantage. The second half started in much the same manner as the first ended with the game taking place firmly in the midfield and few chances arriving for Hibs. The huge turning point came just before the hour when the lights at Hibernian Training Centre went out resulting in a ten minute break before the action resumed. An entirely different Hibernian side returned to the park and within minutes were level as Amy

48

Hay smashed home a free kick through a crowd of bodies. Only minutes later Hibs turned the game on it's head with Holly Aitchison delivering the ball to the back post for captain Nicola Jamieson to power home a header to put Hibs ahead. With the clock winding down it looked like Hibs were happy to see the game out but Queens Park provided a twist with five minutes to go. A corner delivered from the left was flicked on in a crowd of bodies and crept into the net at the far post to bring the visitors level and boost

their promotions hopes. However the U23s were not finished and deep into injury time they hit back to steal all three points. Queens Park failed to convincingly clear their lines resulting in Amy Hay appearing between two defenders in the box to fire home the winner against the post. Hibernian U23s final game takes place this afternoon at Lesser Hampden as they once again face Queens Park who will be looking to secure at least a point to ensure their promotion to SWPL 2 next season at the expense of Renfrew Ladies.

CONNECTION RACHAEL MCLAUCHLAN LOOKS TO FACE HER OLD CLUB FOR THE SECOND TIME AFTER RETURNING TO THE SWPL IN AUGUST.

T

oday's match between Hibernian and Glasgow City may be missing that feeling of huge importance that recent clashes have had but there is still plenty of intrigue in the form of Rachel McLauchlan's return to Ainslie Park. Much like Emma Brownlie the winger is now back in Scotland after spending six months down South playing in the WSL with Glasgow City reaching into their pockets to secure her services full-time until the end of 2019 season. A familiar face around Ainslie Park for the previous three seasons the versatile midfielder made a total of 80 appearances wearing green with an impressive goal scoring tally of 36 goals giving her an almost one in two ratio during her time in Scottish Women's Football. Starting her career at Inverness before spending two years with Aberdeen, McLauchlan arrived at Hibernian ahead of the 2016 season. She made her debut in the opening game of the year, appearing as a second half substitute as she replaced Heather Richards in a 1-0 win over Celtic in the SWPL Cup. Her first start in a Hibernian shirt came a month later, again in the SWPL Cup as Hibs put six goals beyond Forfar Farmington. Rachael scored twice that day her first goals for the club. A successful debut season saw Rachel net 11 times over 30 appearances for the club with a memorable hat-trick against Rangers coming in August and a stunning five goal

display against Edinburgh rivals in October as Hibernian won 8-0 at Ainslie Park. McLauchlan also featured in Hibernian's well remembered UEFA Women's Champions League match against Bayern Munich. She featured in both legs of the tie which set the record attendance for a women's club side in Scotland. The midfielder also saw success in the form of silverware winning three SWPL Cups and three SSE Scottish Cups during her three seasons with the club. She scored in the 2017 SWPL Cup Final victory over Celtic, and while she failed to find the net against Motherwell in the 2018 SSE Scottish Cup Final she was awarded the player of the match award for her impressive contributions to the 8-0 win over Motherwell. Rachel's final Hibernian goals came in the form of four strikes against Rangers on the final day of the 2018 league season which left her with scoring tallies of 11, 12 and 13 in her three seasons at the club. In January of 2019 Rachel made the decision to depart Hibernian to join WSL strugglers Yeovil Town. The basement club were desperately seeking reinforcements during the January transfer window in what ultimately ended up being a failed bid to avoid relegation from the English top flight. McLauchlan made nine appearances for The Glovers during the second half of the season but failed to open her goal scoring account in the WSL.

55

OPPOSITION CONNECTION

With financial difficulties off the pitch resulting in the club going into administration and a 15 point deduction the club were relegated at the end of the season and denied a license to play in the FA Women's Championship. McLauchlan departed the club in the summer. McLauchlan made a surprise return to Scottish Women's Football shorty thereafter signing a professional deal with Hibernian's rivals Glasgow City. Her return debut in Scottish Women's Football came against Hibernian at Petershill Park and

56

McLauchlan was on the winning side that day but did not find the back of the net against her former club. Her return to Scotland has also brought her back into Shelley Kerr's Scotland national team plans receiving a call-up to train with the squad ahead of the first European Championship qualifier against Cyprus at Easter Road. She didn't feature in that match day squad but impressive showings thus far for Glasgow City, including two goals against Rangers in the SSE Scottish Cup semi-final, have seen Rachel called up into the squad to face Albania later

this month. McLauchlan also now has the full set of medals from Scottish Women's Football after capturing the SWPL1 title last week with Glasgow City. Whether she stays up here beyond her current contract or looks to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Lucy Graham by carving out a career in the WSL will be the next big question. Hibs fans will no doubt be wary of her quality not just on Sunday but next month when she could feature against the club, looking to help Glasgow City win their first SSE Scottish Cup since 2015.

Our goalkeepers have progressed really well over the season. It was a proud moment for everyone at Hibs to see Jenna (and Jo!) travel to the women’s World Cup and an achievement that she fully deserved due to her attitude and work I previously played in ethic. I’m glad that Jenna has goals for various clubs such "IT’S BRILLIANT had more game time in the as Spartans, Broxburn and TO SEE THE UEFA Women’s Champions Berwick Rangers. role with the academy is another positive for both her and the club. Jenna has been coaching for a few years and is a fantastic role model so I’m sure she’ll be a success. She’s now one of our most experienced players and has extensive knowledge and advice that she can share with the younger goalkeepers at Hibs. This seasons highlights for me have been our SWPL cup win and playing in Europe again. It’s brilliant to see the players on the European stage and the levels they’re able to reach whilst facing different challenges. They’ll all be better players for it and can hopefully reach those stages again in future. Congratulations to Glasgow City who have deservedly won the league this year so we’re working towards finishing with as many points as possible in the league whilst building up to the SSE Scottish Cup final at Tynecastle.
