Reilly's first half strike was all that separated the sides on the scoresheet. The midfielder did well to create the time to take a touch under pressure from two oncoming Hearts defenders before crashing a 25-yard strike beyond Mutch.

LUCKY THIRTEEN

Today's victory was Hibernian's 13th straight in the SWPL Cup stretching back to the final defeat to Glasgow City in 2015. On that run Hibs have scored 47 goals and conceded only 4 times in return.

THE BIG INTERVIEW - CHELSEA CORNET

CHELSEA

CORNET THE ALL-ACTION MIDFIELDER DISCUSSES COMING THROUGH THE HIBERNIAN ACADEMY AND CAPTAINING SCOTLAND AT U19 LEVEL. You are a local girl aren't you? Where did you grow up and go to school? CC: Yeah I am, I grew up in Loanhead, a small mining town just outside Edinburgh and have lived here all my life. Considering I grew up with three big brothers, when it came to school I never really had much choice, wherever they went, I went. Therefore, I attended the local primary school before advancing to Beeslack Community High School. When were you first introduced to football and what was the first club you joined? CC: Football has always been a big part of my family, I was brought up constantly around it. All my brothers played locally, so I was forever on the side-lines watching them with a ball at my feet. As for my first ever club, I followed

in my brothers' footsteps by joining Loanhead Miners Boys Club. I loved every minute of playing and sometimes even showed up the boys.

"I FOLLOWED IN MY BROTHERS' FOOTSTEPS BY JOINING LOANHEAD MINERS BOYS CLUB. I LOVED EVERYMINUTE OF PLAYING AND SOMETIMES SHOWED UP THE BOYS." Time went on and it soon became clear that I wasn’t there to mess about, gaining captaincy and the nickname of ‘The Boss’.

So is 'The Boss' the best footballer in the Cornet family? CC: Best outfield player, yes! However, my brother Dale is a goalkeeper and I couldn’t lace his boots when it comes to that position. Can you give us an insight into your football background before joining Hibernian? CC: Believe it or not before joining Hibs youth I actually played with Hearts Women U13’s. Being a Hearts fan myself, when trials came up for HMWFC it was a no brainier that I wanted to be involved. After a season and a few derby encounters with Hibs, I was asked to go along to training and see how I got on. After a couple of sessions completed and thoroughly enjoyed. I was asked to sign and have never looked back since.

15

THE BIG INTERVIEW - CHELSEA CORNET

You've been at Hibs since age 13. Can you give us an insight into life at Hibs, coming through the age groups at the academy? CC: My way through the age groups was a whirlwind as I progressed through quite quickly, making my debut with the senior squad at age 15/16. Nonetheless, my time spent within each academy level was greatly beneficial and influential to me as a player and a person. I was faced with a variety of coaches, each of whom taught me different skills, techniques, tactics and always had my development at the forefront, to help me be the best I could. What was your best experience of playing at the academy? CC: One moment that sticks out has to be scoring against Musselburgh Windsor, our biggest rivals in the U13’s league at that time. The goal, not only was it a good finish, if I do say so myself but it was the winner! After going wild celebrating, to my disbelief the Prem team were watching! It was a huge moment for me

16

personally as I really looked up to them and aspired to be like them one day. You mentioned that you broke into the senior squad at a very

young age. How did it feel coming into a squad featuring established players, some of whom would be a good bit older than yourself? CC: Breaking into the senior squad was a dream come true. After years of committing my Sundays to either being a slightly biased ball girl

whilst being shouted at by Lisa Robertson, or cheering the squad on from the sidelines, I had been given this massive opportunity. I couldn’t help but think how lucky I was. The first training session, I have to admit, I couldn’t have been more nervous! Now looking back I had no reason to be as the whole squad were amazing! Growing up, have you always played in midfield? CC: Mostly yes, apart from the odd occasion when away with national squads where I have played both left and right back. You have also been a part of the national team setup at various age groups. How does it feel to have represented Scotland? CC: The feeling of representing your country is unbelievable. There is simply no better feeling. It’s an honour and privilege to have been selected through all age groups and each and every selection is a proud moment. Pulling on that strip before a game is another dream come true.

THE BIG INTERVIEW - CHELSEA CORNET

Can you share with us one of your favourite experiences of being part of the national setup? CC: To choose one experience is so difficult as there were so many. However, being selected as captain for Scotland U19’s has got to be up there. To be given that leadership role and know that Gareth believed in me is an overwhelming feeling. And leading the team out for the Euro finals and World Cup play-off match was particularly special. We are four games into the 2019 season. How do you feel things have started this year? CC: Four games in and still undefeated so I can't complain about that. However, there is always room for improvement and as a team we are well aware of what we need to do in order to be our very best.

levels and specific aspects of my game in order to positively contribute to the team. You mentioned earlier that you are a Hearts supporter. Is that a family thing or did you find your way to supporting Hearts on your own?

"MY AIM IS TO MAINTAIN MY POSITION AND CURRENT GAME LEVEL AS WELL AS CONTINUING TO DEVELOP MY PERFORMANCE LEVELS AND SPECIFIC ASPECTS OF MY GAME."

Do you have any personal goals or objectives for this season?

CC: Let’s just say that when it comes to Derby day my household is very tense! With my mum and oldest brother being Hibees, the rest being wise Jambos. So I had the choice of either really.

CC: Personally, my aim is to maintain my position and current game level, as well as continuing to develop my performance

Do you have any footballing role models or inspirations from the professional game or that you have played

with? CC: Has to be Erin Cuthbert. She is an inspiration to all young female footballers in my eyes. And having not only played along side her but roomed with her for a number of national trips, it’s fair to say she is the most genuine, hardworking and committed player I know, one that I have learned a lot from myself. Boots. Everyone loves a bit of football fashion. What are you wearing on the pitch this season? CC: That is a fact. I’ve gone for Pink Adidas 18.1 Predators but no doubt something new will catch my eye shortly. Can never have too many pairs of boots though. Where do you see yourself being in five years time? CC: In five years time I would love nothing more than to be playing professionally wherever that may be. Crystal ball time. Do you have any plans to stay involved in football beyond your playing career? Coaching, management etc?

21

THE BIG INTERVIEW - CHELSEA CORNET

CC: Unlike many, I actually can’t see myself staying involved. Don’t think it would be for me.

Who are the best players you have played alongside and against?

Away from the pitch, what do you do for work?

CC: Playing against Bayern Munich in the Champions League comes to mind and being faced with the likes of Melanie Behringer and Vivianne Miedema, who were just incredible. Rachael Small is one of the best players I have played alongside, she has great experience and her movement is unbelievable. She makes the game look easy.

CC: I actually work as a cleaner for Edinburgh University. Nothing too exciting but allows me to focus fully on extra training and football. Outside of football what else do you enjoy doing in terms of hobbies and interests? CC: In my spare time, I enjoy going to the gym, socialising with friends, visiting family, reading and attempting to cook good food. Can I add shopping to hobbies?

22

Can you tell us something that we don't know about you? CC: I was named after my mum's pregnancy craving, a Chelsea bun!

Who is the most famous person you have ever met? CC: Liam Fray, lead singer of The Courteeners. Music. Who do you enjoy listening to and what's the best gig you've ever been to? CC: Artist: Chris Brown; Song: Privacy; Best gig has to be Kasabian at Edinburgh Corn Exchange the atmosphere was unbelievable. What's your favourite film? CC: The Heat. Oh wait I have a competitor. Hacksaw Ridge. Can I have both?

NEWS HIBERNIAN COMMUNITY FOUNDATION TO OFFER MODERN APPRENTICESHIPS

PLAYERS TRY THEIR HAND AT BOXING

Following on from International Womens Day the Hibernian Community Foundation announced that in partnership with Skills for Scotland that it will offer Modern Apprenticeships to Hibernian Women and Academy players.

The players were delighted to take part in a unique training session at the Holyrood Boxing Gym. The team enjoyed an evening away from the pitch as they honed their boxing skills under the instruction of owner and former amateur champion Bradley Welsh.

As part of the apprentice framework, players will work towards a SCQF Level 8 qualification in Achieving Excellence in Sports Performance which covers topics such as nutritional strategies, examining communication and focussing on the technical, tactical, physical and psychological aspects of the game. The initiative will fund players from the Women’s 1st team and Girls’ Academy, aged 16+, and will run for 12 months

over the next three years, offering a pathway to professional football for the club’s players. Hibernian Community Foundation Development Manager Gary Hocknull today said: “The women’s game in this country is growing and Hibernian continue to strive to be at the forefront of this. We had a wonderful pre-season training camp in Valencia for 10 days at the end of January and were able to present the Modern Apprenticeship Programme to the 1st team players and staff, to an enthusiastic response. The educational aspect, life skills and training for the players is so attractive and a great opportunity. We’re delighted that players have now registered their interest in enrolment.”

Holyrood Boxing Gym commented via social media: "Take a bow @HibsLadies Outstanding work ethic, concentration and practice tonight in an extremely hard tasked class, it’s no wonder this team is top of the game in Scotland. Absolute pleasure to work with, pushing themselves relentlessly. Thank You. #Hibs"

MICHIE SUPPORTS YOUNG REPORTERS

Cailin Michie took the opportunity to get along to the Edinburgh Academy last week to help out aspiring young people. The Hibernian defender took part in an interview session as part of the BBC Young Reporters Project.

RANGERS

W

ith a number of clubs outlining plans during the off-season to invest in Scottish Women's Football, Rangers caught the eye with Chairman Dave King promising 'improved investment in the Women's programme' at the club's November AGM. The club delivered on that commitment last week upon announcing a modern apprenticeship scheme for girls aged 16-19 in partnership with Skills Development Scotland. The programme is the first of its kind in Scotland (although Hibernian announced a similar scheme just days later) and allows young women a pathway into the game similar to what Rangers offer their male counterparts.

26

The news from off the field has clearly given the club a boost on it as the Gers have started their SWPL 1 campaign strongly with a 4-1 victory at Stirling University and a 2-1 success at home to Forfar Farmington. Rangers strengthened their squad with the acquisition of Ellis Dalgleish from Durham. The 19-year-old having also been on the books at Celtic. The defender being a likefor-like replace for Leah Eddie who made the move across the Central Belt to join Hibernian. Amy McDonald has an exciting young squad of players at her disposal with an array of attacking options shown in the fact that all six of their SWPL 1 goals this season have been scored by six different goal scorers.

THE OPPOSITION - RANGERS

7 BROGAN HAY

Hasn't featured since picking up an injury against Hibs last year.

8 HOLLY NAPIER

The ex Scotland youth international has already fired in three goals this season with 2 in the cup against Partick Thistle and a stunning strike against Stirling University.

5 LAUREN GALLON

Centre half has started both league fixtures this season.

20 HANNAH COAKLEY

Academy graduate has already found the net this term.

17 AMY MCDONALD

Now into her second full season the Rangers head coach is looking to find the consistency to break into the SWPL top three. McDonald's team play an exciting brand of football and with a mixture of experience and youth at her disposal they will prove to be tricky opposition for any side at this level.

CLARE GEMMELL

The Rangers captain has impressed somewhat under the radar this season. Despite having not found the net herself yet she has delivered a pair of key assists for her teammates.

11 CHANTELLE BROWN Struck a late winner against Forfar Farmington.

3 AMY MUIR

Right winger with an eye for a shot and an ability to cross the ball well.

LAST MEETING HIBERNIAN 7 RANGERS 1

The two sides last met on the final day of the 2018 season with Hibernian looking to returning to winning ways following a tight league deciding defeat at Glasgow City and with a Scottish Cup Final to come. Abi Harrison and Rachel McLauchlin both hit hat-tricks while Amy Gallagher also produced a stunning strike with Jade Gallon converting a penalty for the visitors. The game was perhaps most notable for an ACL injury sustained by Shannon McGregor and Brogan Hay of Rangers also unfortunately being stretchered off the pitch.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW - LUCY GRAHAM

LUCY

GRAHAM THE EX-HIBERNIAN MIDFIELDER REFLECTS ON HER TIME WITH THE CLUB AND OFFERS AN INSIGHT INTO LIFE AT BRISTOL CITY IN THE WSL. Like many current players you initially began your career playing with a Boys Club right? That in itself takes a certain mentality and can be a hurdle that may have turned other girls away from the game. Do you feel that in the last ten years that we have made the steps to make the game more accessible and more visible to more young girls? LG: Looking back, I’m very thankful to have been involved in boys football. Playing with boys shaped my style of play and lay solid foundations for attributes that I still use today. Girls football was a little harder to get involved in as teams were scarce however I think the pathways into girls football have come a long way since then and the opportunities are

very inviting. You arrived at Hibs in 2013, signing from Forfar Farmington where you had impressed greatly at such a young age. What were your motivations for making the switch to Hibernian?

"MOVING TO SWEDEN AGAIN WAS TO EXPERIENCE A NEW FOOTBALL CULTURE AND TO PUSH MYSELF OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE." LG: Moving to Hibs in 2013 was purely for development purposes - to be involved within a more competitive environment and

to seek out new challenges. In between your two spells at Hibs you had a period playing out in Sweden. What prompted that move? LG: Moving to Sweden again was to experience a new football culture and to push myself out of my comfort zone. Knowing it would only be short term I had nothing to lose, and knew I always had a home at Hibs to come back to. Your second spell at Hibernian saw the club obtain the silverware that you came so close to achieving the first time you were at the club. How did it feel to contribute to finally lifting trophies? LG: League titles and cups were always a huge motivation for us. To finally have success after a few frustrating years of cup defeats, it

35

WHERE ARE THEY NOW - LUCY GRAHAM

was very satisfying to finally get our hands on the trophies! Looking back at your time with Hibernian what is your favourite memory of being part of the club? LG: My favourite memory has to be when we were drawn against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League. Although we were beaten, it was a huge occasion for the club. In the summer of 2018 you were attracted by the prospects of playing professionally to move South to join Bristol City ahead of the start of the WSL season. What brought you to the decision that Bristol City was the right step for you to further your career? LG: I felt my time at Hibs had come to a natural conclusion. I needed new motivation and a change of environment. As an athlete you can’t afford to fall complacent so when a move to play in the WSL with Bristol City became available it renewed my hunger to grow as a player and a person.

36

How do you feel the level of the WSL compares to that of the SWPL? Do you feel that playing in the SWPL offers a good platform for preparing players who want to make the move South??

"THERE ARE NO SUBSTITUTES FOR HARD WORK. ALONG THE WAY YOU WILL HAVE TO SACRIFICE A LOT OF TIME AND EFFORT - IT WILL BE WORTH IT. THERE ARE NO SHORT-CUTS TO THE TOP, EMBRACE EVERY CHALLENGE AND BE PATIENT." LG: The WSL in my opinion is one of the most competitive leagues in women’s football. Whereas the SWPL has struggled to match

that level in recent years. I still think it is a good platform for Scottish players to develop, and with the talk of investment for teams to potentially go professional, it could be very attractive in raising the profile of the Scottish game. Having now made the step up to playing full time what do you feel are the key differences between the football at Hibernian and what Bristol City can offer which have allowed you to develop and improve as a player? LG: Before moving to Bristol, I was balancing a part time job and a heavy commuting schedule to and from training which was a struggle at times. Making the transition from part time to playing full time now allows me to not only train harder, but recover sufficiently as well. You have also been a prominent figure on the international stage as well. You have played at a variety of age groups and also earned a handful of full international

37

WHERE ARE THEY NOW - LUCY GRAHAM

caps. The World Cup is fast approaching and with Scotland set to make their debut on the world stage, what would it mean to you to get the call up to the full squad for the tournament? LG: I would be absolutely delighted to get a call up for the World Cup, however if the call doesn’t come this time I’m confident my time will come eventually. For now I just need to keep working hard at club level with Bristol City to make sure I put myself in the best position possible to play for my country. Based upon your own experiences what

38

message do you have for girls looking to develop their football careers?

"I WOULD BE ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED TO GET A CALL UP FOR THE WORLD CUP, HOWEVER IF THE CALL DOESN'T COME THIS TIME I'M CONFIDENT MY TIME WILL COME EVENTUALLY." LG: There are no substitutes for hard work. Along the way you will have to sacrifice a

lot of time and effort - it will be worth it. Appreciate those who help you on your journey, trust me you can’t do it on your own. Stay committed. Especially when you are faced with adversity. There are no short-cuts to the top, embrace every challenge and be patient. Finally where can we continue to follow your career? LG: You can follow me on social media at the links below! THE LAST WORD

THE

LAST WORD GENERAL MANAGER FLORENCE HAINES HIGHLIGHTS A BUSY START TO THE SEASON BOTH ON AND OFF THE PITCH AT HIBERNIAN.

T

hank you for taking the time to read our programme this week and I hope you enjoyed the content. I have to say a huge thank you to Craig Doyle for designing and collating the programme as well as taking the photographs included in here. Thanks also to all those who have contributed content at any point. Hibernian are undergoing a transition period in their social media and promotions after the previous volunteers stepped back and we appreciate your understanding in this time. There are a lot of brilliant people working to develop the Club on and off the field and we have ambitious plans for the future. On the field it is great to have started the season unbeaten and utilising a full squad, with debuts for new signings. A special mention to Shannon McGregor who continues her rehab and is working very hard to be back playing as soon as possible. Unfortunately, fellow National Performance Academy player Leah Eddie suffered a serious knee injury against Spartans and will be sidelined for a long spell. Everyone at the Club is behind both players and we wish them all the best for their full recovery. This month also saw five players in the squad travel and represent Scotland at either U19 or A Squad level. Well

done to Joelle Murray and Jenna Fife away with Shelley’s side at the Algarve Cup and to Kirsty Morrison, JamieLee Napier and Lauren Davidson in La Manga with the youth team. A terrific experience for all as they prepare for the World Cup and UEFA Championships respectively. On a slightly different note it was really pleasing to see the announcements from global brands Nike and Adidas in the past week. After the recent statement from the SFA who have produced specific Women’s World Cup strips for Scotland, Nike also unveiled their World Cup kits in Paris for 14 nations. Adidas were also in the news for their commitment to pay sponsored players on the team that wins the FIFA Women’s World Cup this year the same performance bonus payments as their male counterparts. A real testimony from both organisations showing their ambition to drive and support innovate and compelling products for the women’s game, as well as recognising success on an equal level. Women’s football support and recognition is certainly accelerating, and we are excited to develop the game here in Scotland and at Hibernian. I hope you enjoy the game today.
