BALANCE ARCHITECTURE WITH LIGHT A challenging project for the most prestigious University in China in the heart of its historical campus. In 2009 a prestigious American Foundation (The Leo KoGuan Foundation) and Beijing University invited Kokaistudios to design the building for the new faculty of law located in a prestigious location within the historical campus of China leading University. This particular site, where the pagoda symbol of the university is standing, required considerable effort in terms of design in order to find architectural answers that could satisfy and meld in a harmonious way the heritage elements, the beautiful natural environment and the new contemporary building. This prestigious project completed in October 2010 is considered the milestone of a new era for Beijing University, and a symbol for better and more environmentally sustainable standard of living for the future University Community and for architectural buildings within that community. This project has been conceived on a rigid volumetric shape imposed by the strict regulation protecting the historical site and at the same time by the necessity to fulfill all the functional requirements of the new faculty. The rigorous style requested to be accepted by the large number of heritage commissions have been interpreted in creative way by Kokaistudios by proposing an elegant use of few materials, concrete plasters and local stones with capabilities to transmit day light and a clever use of skylights, sinking gardens in order to increase the use of natural light and thermal efficiency of the building. Kokaistudios transformed the facades to become light filters and diffusing soft daylight light all over the interiors. The entire system of internal spaces has been designed by our team so to upgrade the standards of working, living, and studying of the future professors and students, using sustainable materials and creating aggregation facilities and spaces that could satisfy the flexible demands of the faculty in the future.

Since the late 90’s, Ector Hoogstad Architecten has been closely involved with the development of Twente University. A master plan was drawn up for the campus which covers the urban design. Jan Hoogstad, the supervisor, is responsible for monitoring all planning. The master plan divides up the campus into 2 urbanized parts: one for housing and leisure, the other for education and research. This concentration of building allows large parts of the surrounding park to remain untouched. Ector Hoogstad Architecten was commissioned to design three new buildings in the master plan: the new IT centre, the building for the combined faculties of Science and Technology, Mathematics and Computer Sciences (Carré) and the Institute for Nanotechnology (Nanolab). The latter two together form the heart of the Education and Research Centre. Carré houses all office and laboratory

facilities of the 2 faculties. The Nanolab accommodates the most valuable laboratories the university has to offer. Carré is a five-storey building enclosing a central courtyard. The design has a singularly deep nave of 21.6 meters. This gives the building optimum flexibility, while the continuous rectangular routing facilitates smooth passage without any dead ends. As part of the project Hall B, the oldest university building on the campus has been renovated to become the main entrance of the Carré. From here Carré can be accessed via a wide transparent corridor, crossing the courtyard at the level of the first floor; it provides access to the adjacent Nanolab. The Carré together with the new Nanolab form an ensemble that connects all existing buildings that make up the Education and Research centre.

Crepain Binst Architecture nv Crepain Binst Architecture, which was founded in 2006, is the result of a creative marriage between architect and urban development experts Jo Crepain (2008) and Luc Binst. Over the past few years, the office has developed into a strong, stable and dynamic team of "co-thinkers" that can fall back on 40 years of experience and 400 realizations in Belgium and the Netherlands. "Architecture", "Interior" and "Design" are formulated by a collective of seniors, project managers and trainees. The design aspect, or the "A-part", derives its strength from Luc Binst and the design team. The construction-technical training, or the "B-part", guarantees an optimal flow of knowledge from seniors to trainees. Luis Machuca & Associates The architecture studio Luis Machuca & Associates was founded by the architects Luis Machuca Santa-Cruz, Luis Machuca Casares, María Machuca Casares and Manuel José Rodríguez Ruiz. Chyutin Architects was founded by Bracha Chyutin and Michael Chyutin in 1978. The firm specializes in architectural design of public buildings, residential buildings and interiors, and in urban planning. The firm has been responsible for the design of the master plans for several academic campuses and buildings, as well as for many culture and education complexes. The firm’s designs have been shown at numerous national and international architectural exhibitions, and have been written about in the daily press and in professional journals throughout the world. Bracha Chyutin and Michael Chyutin still engage in academic activity in most of Israel’s universities. 3XN 3XN was founded as Nielsen, Nielsen and Nielsen in Aarhus in 1986 by the architects Kim Herforth Nielsen, Lars Frank Nielsen (partner until 2002) and Hans Peter Svendler Nielsen (partner until 1992). The three Nielsen architects, often referred to as the Nielsens – and today simply as 3XN – quickly became known for two things: their preference for ground-breaking architecture, in defiance of the anti-humanistic modernism, and projects demanding a high level of detail and employing workmanship of the highest quality. A first breakthrough came with the court house in Holstebro, which was followed by a number of first prizes in architectural competitions, such as the Architects’ House in Copenhagen, The Glass Museum in Ebeltoft and the concert hall Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam. The partnership today consists of Founder Kim Herforth Nielsen; CEO Bo Boje Larsen who became Partner in 2003; and Head of Competition Jan Ammundsen who became Partner in 2007.

Mehrdad Yazdani For most of his design career, Mehrdad Yazdani has practiced at the intersection of the large office and the small studio. Named by Progressive Architecture magazine as one of the world’s top emerging designers just three years after earning his Master of Architecture from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, Mehrdad has succeeded in bringing a design sensibility characteristic of design studios to an international portfolio spanning typologies. Throughout his career, Mehrdad has main-tained a consistent and clear design vision – he is known for a striking ability to combine experimental design with a mature resolution of pragmatic requirements. Today, as a principal of Cannon Design’s national practice and Design Director of the west coast-based Yazdani Studio, Mehrdad is a respected member of the international design community. Richard Kirk Architect Pty Ltd Richard Kirk Architect was established in Brisbane in 1995. The design intensive practice has been purposefully structured to allow Richard to personally to take a lead role in all commissions from design inception, the construction phase and completion. The culture of the practice fosters a collaborative studio where ideas are explored for each project. The practice has a great interest in the role that well made buildings play in the communities and environments they intend to serve. With each project they work to make evocative places and buildings that are memorable and that are clearly legible in terms of how they are spatially organised and constructed. The practice has a deep interest in developing construction methods and material knowledge to produce unique buildings that respond directly to each client, brief and circumstance. The practice’s approach to client briefs is not only responsive but also pro-active. The diversity of projects within the practice has developed a robust design sensibility and process. Decision making and communication is directly managed by each staff member. Each project has the same team leader for all phases which ensures continual refinement of the ideas and building quality and a single point of contact for the client.
