Classic Works that Will Never Fade

Development History
Design Connotation
Design Style
Design techniques

The Parthenon in Athens or the Pantheon in Rome are considered as two greatest buildings of the true “classical” style of architecture. The Parthenon, built in the 5th century B.C. is a stunning example of the Doric style, a rectangular building with Doric columns (simple with rounded tops) across the front. The Pantheon was built in 126 A.D. It is a round building with a square front having Corinthian columns (fancier than the Doric column in that it has more ornate carvings or images at the top) again across the front and the full height of the building. This “classical” style was revived in the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe and America and became known as the “Neo-classical” style of architecture. The word “Neo-classicism” is defined in Webster’s Dictionary as “relating, or constituting a revival or adaptation of the classical especially in literature, music, art or architecture”. The Neoclassical style is not one singular style but incorporates a variety of styles (Greek Revival, Federalist, Anti-Bellum and Beaux Arts). Although these styles were different, they all shared some common elements: columns, pediments, domes, and a symmetrical balance in the design. In England in the 18th century, the Greek Revival style became the dominant force for architecture and is visible today in many of Britain’s most important public buildings, including the Theatre Royal, Covent Gardens, the British Museum and the National Gallery, to name a few. In the United States, the Greek influence caught on in the late
18th and early 19th centuries and can be seen in many of our public buildings (The White House and The Supreme Court) but became very popular for residential buildings. One of the most famous examples of neoclassical architecture in a residence is that of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello in Virginia. It is symmetry on a grand scale. If you look at a picture of Monticello, you can see many of the elements of Neo-classical style: the dome, columns, the balance of each wing and the essence of style. Mount Vernon, George Washington’s home, also in VA, is another good example of the Neo-classical style. Particularly in the Southern and Eastern United States, the neoclassical inf luences abound in residential, public and private buildings, particularly institutions of higher learning. In residential buildings, this style does seem to symbolize wealth and success, but the beauty of the style is in the symmetry of both the front and rear of the home. You will typically see the columns in the front with a doorway which may have a decorative surround and a pediment above the door, evenly spaced windows divided into 6 or 8 panes and the rear of the home may have a porch again with columns and a feeling of balance. As you review the homes in this book, you will note many of these qualities and sense the grandness, the simplicity of balance and how the elements all work together to create a timeless and extraordinary design.

Even after its birth about 250 years ago, the Neo-classical style is still considered the epitome of refined elegance, beauty and grace in architecture and the decorative arts. The Neo-classical style with its clean lines and rigid symmetry was first developed in France in the mid-18th century and was quickly adopted throughout Europe. A direct result of the Enlightenment movement, the tastemakers of the period had become tired of the perceived excess of the previous century that was typified by the Rococo style, turned for inspiration to classical art and a desire to move away from overtly grand public spaces to create rooms that are more intimate and of human scale. The Neo-classical style, based on straight lines and rectilinear forms, used a selection of classical ornaments that were first applied to French architecture and decorative arts during the 1760s.
My home in France’s famed Loire Valley, the Chateau du GrandLuce, has been called “one of the most precious elements of architecture of the French Enlightenment”. It is featured here in this book, as well as a book that I wrote entitled: “An Invitation to Chateau du Grand-Luce”. The chateau is a wonderful representation of how the principles of Neo-classical architecture continue to define elegant living on a human scale. What one finds at my chateau is how a structure as potentially imposing as Neoclassican chateau in the French countryside can be turned into a warm inviting place for the way that people actually live today. The guiding principles of Neo-classical architecture (symmetry, clean lines, human-scaled rooms) can be applied equally well to recreations of the past and even to the most contemporary forms of architecture.

ARCHITECT BRIAN BIGLIN FIRM BIGLIN ARCHITECTURAL GROUP BUILDER FINTON CONSTRUCTION AREA 3,252 m2 PHOTOGRAPHER ERHARD PFEIFFER
Inspired by the owner’s affection for Versailles and its ever-breathtaking architectural history, this palatial Beverly Hills home rests in a prime Los Angeles location. The home is intricately detailed, harkening back to the designs of Newport homes in the days of Robber Barons. With Brian Biglin as the architect and John Finton as the builder, the home juxtaposes luxury, creativity, and uniqueness to create the ideal modern palace. Being devoted to find the best possible options for the owner, John Finton travelled through Europe and Asia to find Portuguese hand-carved limestone that now fills the home. The exterior doors and windows are laced with bronze, while over a million dollars’ worth of gold laces the home in plated moldings. Remy Garnier, one of the most prestigious hardware companies that date back to 1874 in Paris, contributes the breathtaking door hardware. The awe-inspiring Beverly Hills draws on the historical Parisian architectural style, and more specifically designs from Versailles to become a project much more than just architecture, but rather, a work of art.

Designer SHH Area 790 m2 Photographer James Balston
The architects and designers of SHH have completed the new interior design and decoration of an elegant and classically-built 790 m2 North London property - for the second time! The previous owner had engaged the services of SHH to fully refurbish this home to an extremely high interior architectural standard and its new owner followed suit, briefing SHH’s Residential Interiors Team to create a new interiors scheme to fulfil their particular vision, which was to combine “the relaxed feel of Ralph Lauren with the grandeur of a Four Seasons hotel” . The house is entered via a solid panelled door into an elegant double

volume space, dominated by a free floating stone stair case and a giant nickel lantern, which hangs from the cupola on the second level. The floor is laid in classical black and white stone, set out in an overscaled diagonal pattern with matching borders. The entire double volume area, including the skirting, has been finished in a cream limestone. Grand classical architraves and pediments, dental cornicing and the entire staircase were all hewn from the same limestone. The stair is further enhanced with a solid mahogany banister rail, which is repeated in the doors leading to the reception, kitchen and family room.
59
To the left of the entrance to the reception room sits an 18th antique English mahogany hall table, complete with grey marble top, as well as a French arm chair. To update the chair, the seat was upholstered in leather and the back was covered in a rich tapestry fabric. To the right as one enters from outside, sits a unique English hall consul in a violin shape with a black basalt top and, over this, a Classical English mahogany mirror. Lighting here consists of a giant nickel ceiling pendant from Charles Edwards, in the style of a Chinese lantern, as well as two pairs of French wall sconce candelabra. The stair runner is a bespoke Aubusson design from Tim Page Carpets. The entire first floor is occupied by the master suite, which is entered by way of the grand mahogany double doors. The floor finish here is new oak parquet in the Versailles style. The room very much carries on the theme of the rest of the house with the use of the high gloss lacquer and wood furniture, all from Ralph Lauren. The centre piece of the room is definitely the leather bed from Baxter, which dominates, but doesn’t overcrowd the room. Other key features include curtains made from a soft sage tapestry linen from De La Cuona, bespoke gilded stools from David Salmon and a further leather chair from Baxter.

The property on Northeast Road was established in 1958. The design goal was to fully utilize the potential of this site while maintaining the eclectic charm of the house and to reflect the owner’s taste and lifestyle. When entering the estate, one would first notice the interesting design of the marble floors in the foyer. As you walk through the home, you will be surprised that there is nothing predictable about the floor plan or its design elements. The detailed wainscoting; it is just one of the many custom elements which make this home so dramatic. Custom cabinetry, faux painted molding, and architectural detailed ceilings all add a special feeling to the property. Every design detail has been addressed, even the unique tiling on the

risers of the staircases. Just to the left of the foyer is an impressive two-story classical library that is accented in reddish hues and surprises you with its dynamic red ceiling. The expansive living room has strong architectural elements juxtaposed against its soft pink hues. The combination is pure elegance. The master suite has his & her bathrooms, its own private sitting room and a sleeping chamber with a fireplace, inlayed within the custom built-ins. This beauty and elegance extends to the outside space. Terraces are layered on the outside of the house to insure that the views of the Connecticut River Valley are captured from all angles.

This expansive mansion leaves people the impression of meticulosity from simplicity to intricacy, from the whole to the parts. Every detail counts, with every detailing finely crafted. Whiling maintaining the general style of textures and colors, it discards overly complex textures and decorations and simplifies lines without losing the strong feeling of history and rich cultural heritage. The Neo-classical European furniture is an eclectic mix of luxury and elegance of the European royal. With strong feelings and atmosphere of arts, it fully demonstrates the owner’s taste of culture. The house seems to have existed for 100 years, but actually its real “age” is less than 10 years. Classical design is not the mere replication of historical forms as what we thought. The designers are fond of applying classical forms and spaces into contemporary living environments. Taking Mr. Baker’s recent work for example, he laid
164
emphasis on natural stones which not only endows the building with classical charm, but also integrates the building with the natural environment. Extremely elaborate main entrance and staircase are the favorite of every Neo-classicist. The entire residential design represents the exceptionally high-end lifestyle.

This project continues the basic style of texture and color of the classical European style. The architect illustrates his excellent craftsmanship in the detailing, from the whole to the parts, from the orientation of the elements to the selection of materials, every small detail making a big difference, keeping the nobleness and elegance of classicism. Each space has its different functional requirements. The designers use the contrast of colors and change of patterns and other particular treatments to deploy the interior environmental

experiences through various modern furnishings, and complete the space division without changing the overall style. Neo-classicism is for the purpose of respecting nature, pursuing the truth and reviving the ancient art form. However, it archaizes but not restores. On the basis of the rules of modern arts, Neo-classicism takes the outline features of traditional style, using simplified techniques to keep the classic elegance, dignity and nobleness and enables people to achieve the spiritual pursuit while enjoying the material civilization.

Livre Chinois Town House in New York
Designer Juan Pablo Molyneux. FIRM J. P. Molyneux Studio LTD.
Juan Pablo Molyneux began this project by restoring his 6 floor limestone Townhouse to its original state. Originally built in the early 20th Century it was redesigned in the Neo-French classical style. When it was purchased by the Molyneux ’ s in 1989 the interiors had been subdivided into several apartments. The volumes of this classical space had lost their character and the coherent organization of noble living. On the 1st floor, the vestibule walls of the Piano Nobile are covered with Chinese lacquered panels that were inspired by a 17th-century Chinese screen. In Europe during the 18th century, Chinoiseries illustrated the European curiosity for China and were very fashionable. On both sides of this central vestibule, two hand-cast arched bronze doors lead to a pair of symmetrical spaces. Black and white marble pavers laid on the diagonal unify all three rooms creating an enfilade when the doors are open. The pair of bronze doors match 198
the shape of the curved windows of the first Salon. In the first salon, the walls and paneled moldings of the rooms are fully upholstered in different colors and patterns of velvet. The effect mimics traditional wood paneling. In the Library, the walls are finished in “scagliola”. An antique technique of applied stucco made to resemble marble. Very popular in Europe in the 17th century, it provided a complex texture and richness of color not available in natural marble. Molyneux chose to replicate tortoise shell as well as beige and black marble in the “scagliola” of this space. On the other three floors of the home, Molyneux used the same elements of traditional design that help define his own Classical style. He whimsically mixes French antiques with modern art creating eclectic spaces rooted in traditionalism. The house ends with a duplex roof garden that includes a lap pool, and generous garden space.

In designing this 557 m 2 home in the Parkland area of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Interior Designer Perla Lichi achieved the look of Old World Italy. A hand-painted mural replica of a Michelangelo painting adorns the cupola ceiling. A dramatically curved circular staircase with Old World wrought-iron detailing leads to three upstairs bedrooms. A painted mural flows from the family room into the kitchen, bringing to life Old World motifs of Venice and Tuscany. Over-sized dark leather seating faces the large screen TV and built-in wall unit with display shelving and storage cabinetry. Saturnia flooring flows throughout the home that is highlighted with interior architectural detailing, making ample use of Corinthian columns and pilasters. Two caryatids flank the entrance to the formal dining room. Intricately designed coffered ceilings that follow the shape and contours of the spaces below were detailed with stone gothic friezes to add additional depth. The lady of the house really wanted a place to show off her extensive

doll collection and Perla Lichi transformed one of the upstairs bedrooms to meet this need. Glass-front armoires provide the focus along one wall. The ambiance was completed with mirrors, gilded decorative crown moldings and wine-colored velvet upholstered chairs. The master suite, positioned at the end of a hallway on the ground floor, features the bedroom to one side and a his-and-hers bath to the other, with closets and storage in between. The master bath provides a sumptuous retreat with a roman tub and shower, separated by a hand-cut glass divider featuring neoclassical images highlighted in gold that allows natural light to enter the room. The master bedroom is a study in decorative embellishment. A semicircular niche above the carved wood bed features a handpainted mural. The ceiling features an octagonal triple-tray ceiling adorned with hand-painted, hand-gilded molding. Flowing draperies are crowned with silk swags. At the foot of the bed is an upholstered bench. The room is completed with brown silk upholstered, oversized seating.

DESIGNER PERLA LICHI ARCHITECT ROBERT SHELLEY, SHELBY HOMES PHOTOGRAPHER BARRY GROSSMAN
Perla Lichi designed this home for one of South Florida’s most prominent private builders and developers. He and his wife wanted to use their own art and accessories. It was the designer’s task to create a warm, comfortable background through finishes and furnishings that would result in a palatial look for this three-story home. From the foyer one looks up three floors to a circular dome ceiling. Wrought-iron scrollwork balustrades wind upward along the stairway as light filters through narrow Arabic-style windows filled with frosted pale green glass with gold metal inserts. Camelback arches divide the foyer from the living room, the living room from the dining room. Bas relief scrollwork motifs on arches and columns are enhanced with faux painting. Custom ceilings were created for each room. The living room, for example, features an elongated octagonal triple tray ceiling that creates a canopy of beauty overhead. The dining room called for an oval ceiling treatment to contrast the rectangular formal dining table and provide a suitable frame for a magnificent chandelier elegantly framed by an elaborate, hand gilded ceiling medallion.
274
The kitchen exudes warmth and charm with intricate carved and etched cabinets and a mosaic fruit basket that creates a focal point within a tumbled stone backsplash. Subtle hand-carved wood scrollwork in the main area of the cabinetry echoes the bas relief scrollwork from the main living areas. The family room features a floor-to-ceiling built-in cabinet that houses audio video equipment and provides ample room for displaying collectibles. In the master bedroom, mahogany crown molding surrounds the ceiling line, followed by a gilded decorative painted effect on the inside of the tray. The master bath custom cabinets are European-style in a light painted custom finish. The ceiling is hand-painted with shimmering gold, bronze and silver effects. A winding stairway leads from the den to the third floor landing and the owner’s vast collection of brightly painted antique mugs. A bar and game room invites fun and relaxation. On the third landing, one can more closely admire the foyer’s beautiful dome ceiling with all its splendid detailing.

This magnificent villa, located on a 2-hectare estate on Florida’s Gulf Coast, exemplifies Venetian Mediterranean-style architecture. Filled with light, the living room takes in vistas of sky and water through mahogany-framed double doors and arched windows. In the main living areas, creamy Venetian plaster walls lend luster to the Old World decor. The walls also provide a neutral backdrop for distinctive architectural elements such as Corinthian columns in the second-floor gallery and row of columns adjoining the living room. An entablature designed by the architect and detailed by Perla Lichi, separates the doors from the windows. An oversized fireplace with a marble surround and mantel serves as the room’s focal point. Just above it, a hand-painted mosaic brightens a Moorish-inspired niche. Strong architectural elements of columns, niches and windows give the living room its dramatic look. Because of the large dimensions of the living room, Perla Lichi created two separate conversation areas that are linked together by placement of sofas back-to-back in a tete-a-
292
tete arrangement. An area rug pulls the seating together. Pointed-arched windows on the stairway rotunda inspired Perla Lichi to design arched openings in the dining room. Decorative wrought iron enhances each opening, creating the effect of Venetian screens. The crema marfil marble floor in the second floor gallery has inlays of onyx, granite and marble. The ceiling features decorative painting. The home features beautiful views of the Gulf of Mexico. With windows that resemble portholes, the breakfast area seems like the prow of a ship. To keep the view unobstructed, Perla Lichi adorned the rectangular windows with simple taupe silk swags. Wood-framed armchairs encircle a table with a base of mahogany and a water jet marble top. This home flows easily to the outside, where the patio and pool area takes its cues from the canals of Venice. A gently arched, covered bridge links the guesthouse to the pool. The pool is designed with a beach entry so that guests can easily step in and walk down to water’s edge.
