After the International Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), the Audi Ring remained in use beyond the IAA until October 16, as part of a cooperation with the Frankfurt Book Fair. The temporary expressive building was transformed into the “Open Space” Forum, offering a suitable event location for visionary keynotes, master classes, trend shows, and exclusive previews. Harry Potter producer David Heyman, Transmedia producer Louis-Pierre Pharand, actor Rupert Everett, and producer Roland Emmerich were all present at the Frankfurt StoryDrive Conference – a meeting event for the international world of media and entertainment. By forming this partnership with the book fair, Audi wanted to lend a stage for the exchange of ideas from different disciplines and schools of thought across various industries. The cooperation is intended to be long-term. With

the cooperation project “Open Talks” which started during the Book Fair, Audi and the Book Fair intend to develop an interdisciplinary forum for different subjects and lines of thought. The aim is to create space for discussion, enabling exceptional encounters and thus creating impulses for a culture of interdisciplinary openness and dialogue. The leading questions that were put to the forum were: How can a new, future-oriented thinking emerge? What drives creativity and innovation? In addition to the Audi cooperation area “driven by ideas” where the StoryDrive Conference took place, the “Open Space” was also home to the antiquarian book fair, several SPARKS offers (the digital initiative of the Frankfurt Book Fair), the press center, and the installation “Murmur Study” by the artist Christopher P.Baker.

Frankfurt's Festival Hall once again played host to an extraordinary presentation of Mercedes-Benz. The exhibition design by Kauffmann Theilig & Partner and Atelier Markgraph was a continuation of this year running-theme: 125 years since the invention of the automobile. Along the longitudinal axis of the Festival Hall, visitor ranks on the north side and a vast stage on the south side are sharply juxtaposed. Both rise up, reaching towards the suspended midnightblue dome. Along the side spans silver anodized and brushed aluminum sculptural band. In the center of this sculptural band lies a staggered, kinetic media stage from which a continuous display-cycle of drama arises. A huge LED installation bears the central theme of the exhibition space, an animated pulse, giving rhythm to the visitor experience before the unveiling of vehicles. From the entrance of the Festival Hall, visitors steadily rise to the top by escalator, where a breathtaking view over the entire exhibition awaits. From there, a route through intimate, terraced spaces return visitors to the ground floor. An optimal view of the media stage was intentionally designed through the entire experience. On all exhibition floors, the glass railings, long edges, and built-in seating areas open new vistas and perceptions for visitors, who can leisurely move between the show on one end and information on the other. The main actors of this years auto show were the premiering of Mercedes Next vehicles. Visitors experience throughout the exhibition the new B-Class, the new M-Class, the conceptual A-Class, the research vehicle F125! and classic cars. Vehicle movements merge with various media and presentation formats in addition to choreography by live presenters with many tempo fluctuations. The design of horizontally and vertically arranged LED screens and curtains, in various resolutions, create marvelous spaces of surprise especially through its depth. The vastness of the stage, with its long passage and generous platform, return the space for various productions.

Innovative architect Zaha Hadid, who in 2004 became the first female recipient of the renowned Pritzker Architecture Prize, has advanced the vocabulary of contemporary architecture and design through the exploration of complex fluid geometries and the use of cutting-edge techniques and manufacturing technologies. For this exhibition – the first in the United States to feature her product designs – the Iraqi-born British architect has created a sculptural environment for a selection of furniture, decorative art, jewelry, and footwear that she has designed in recent years. This exhibition emphasizes the continuous nature of her work, reinventing the balance between objects and space in an interior landscape. Sleekly curving sofas, tables, and lounge chairs – made of materials ranging from wood, steel, aluminum, and polyurethane – inhabit the gallery, while biomorphic forms represent the new and unusual shapes Hadid has introduced into

the language of design. Among the highlights are a collection of Swarovski crystal – encrusted necklaces and bracelets, spiraling, strappy shoes made for Lacoste and Melissa, and the three-wheeled Z-car I, a prototype created of high-density foam that echoes several of her sculptural forms. On November 19, 2011, Collab, a group of design professionals and enthusiasts who support the Museum’s modern and contemporary design collection, will honor Hadid with the 2011 Design Excellence Award. Collab’s Student Design Competition (offered since 1993) challenges area college students studying architecture and industrial design to be inspired by themes closely associated with the Design Excellence Award winner and the corresponding exhibition.

Osram Opto Semiconductors manufactures lighting semiconductors, sensors and visualization components. The ability of LED technology to identify opposites was the inspiration for the stand that design firm BACHMANN.KERN UND PARTNER developed for Osram’s presentation at Electronica in 2008. A black, 6m high wall enclosed the booth. Elliptical openings big enough to step through were cut out of the wall. The light that spilled out of openings provoked curiosity in passers-by, who were drawn to the stand like proverbial moths to a flame. The façade design resulted in a pair of opposites that play in a big role in LED technology, namely visible and invisible. The openings enabled visitors to see into the stand but not all areas were in sight at all times.
Inside the stand, Osram’s company colors, orange and white, were used to visually separate communication and information zones. An orange bar formed the communication area of the stand, where the new Osram OS image film was screened in the background. The bar area was surrounded by illuminated recesses, each containing 12 cubes seats inserted into a shelving system. By pulling them out, visitors could create a random light display and thus influence the appearance of the exhibition stand. Elsewhere, groups of related products were placed on white columns, and white information desk provided a contact point for visitors.

在展台内部,欧司朗公司标志性的橙色和白色,在视觉上划分出了交流区和信息区。 橙色的吧台是展台的交流区,吧台身后的屏幕上播放着欧司朗公司最新的形象宣传片。 吧台周围环绕着发光的休息区,每个区域都有 12 个立方体座位,安插在一个灵活的布局 中。参观者如果将这些座位拔出来,就可以重新摆放形成一种随意的灯光照明效果,展 台的样子就会随之产生变化。在休息区以外的地方,相关的产品分类摆放在白色的柱子上, 而白色的信息服务台则为参观者与本公司的联系提供了便利条件。

在展台内部,欧司朗公司标志性的橙色和白色,在视觉上划分出了交流区和信息区。 橙色的吧台是展台的交流区,吧台身后的屏幕上播放着欧司朗公司最新的形象宣传片。 吧台周围环绕着发光的休息区,每个区域都有 12 个立方体座位,安插在一个灵活的布局 中。参观者如果将这些座位拔出来,就可以重新摆放形成一种随意的灯光照明效果,展 台的样子就会随之产生变化。在休息区以外的地方,相关的产品分类摆放在白色的柱子上, 而白色的信息服务台则为参观者与本公司的联系提供了便利条件。

Dept of Energy (DOE) partnered with Greenspace to create this 60’ x 90’ (18.3m x 27.4m ) trade show booth for KEEN. Sustainability is a core value at KEEN and it was important for this to come across in their booth. The challenge was to set them apart from all the other “green” booths that are out there these days. Instead of drawing from the typical palette of ecomaterials, the booth was built almost entirely of materials that were salvaged or repurposed including discarded shipping pallets, old traffic signs and oil drums. An important element of the strategy behind the booth’s unique aesthetic was making sure that the things that were reused to create the exhibit were recognizable for what they once were. This is what created a connection with people and drove the eco-story home without any explanation required. It’s obvious that the walls are pallets and the shelves are license plates, and

traffic signs etc. Some things weren’t as obvious but this added an element of intrigue and discovery to the booth. This playful patchwork of different objects and materials gave the booth immense character and really played off the personality and philosophy of KEEN. The booth has received multiple awards as well as recognition for its environmentally sustainable solution. “By making use of material that was at the end of its life we were essentially borrowing it on its way to the landfill and therefore creating very little environmental impact. By intercepting these materials, giving them a second life, and then disposing of them responsibly, we are actually reversing their environmental impact.”

The beginning of the project was based on the gills of the manta ray. How from one surface it divides himself to making progressive openings. The complete geometry is triangulated to make more architectonic effects. The space is created by 40 stripes of 25cm width, where each one deforms, twists, reduces width, pulls up and down for making the functions of presentation, communication, sitting, table, desk, lights openings, and storage. All the stripes are following a general geometry of 3 sinusoidal lines that are evolving in the space. These directions lines are making the overall space more structured.

These stripes are covered with carpet in one side when the other side is painted in black. Those allow seeing almost the complete collection of 2TEC2, which allow having the entire showroom as a display. People could walk right into it, and step on the carpet, touch the striped wall, read the screens, and be surrounded by the material to be displayed in a way that they become engaged with the product, very actively. The complete space is made by 2 main materials 2TEC2 carpet and black MDF, which allow a simple reading of the product inside a complex geometry.

nendo is a design firm founded in 2002 in Tokyo, with architect Oki Sato (b. Canada, 1977, M. Arch. Waseda University) as its principal. The firm realizes its goal of bringing small surprises to people through a multidisciplinary practice whose media include architecture, interiors, furniture, industrial products and graphic design. nendo opened their Milan office in 2005. nendo was selected the “Designer of the Year” from Wallpaper Magazine and Elle Decoration International Design Award in 2012.

TULP interprets and stages ideas, attitudes, characters or content of a company and gives them shape in space – at trade shows, showrooms, exhibitions, POS or the product itself. A good understanding for every task and a desire to always see things in a new and better way, that is what makes their design unique. Giancarlo Zema Design Group
The Giancarlo Zema Design Group is an architecture studio in Rome, specialized in semisubmerged architectural structures, marine parks, floating habitats and yacht design. It was founded in 2001 by the architect Giancarlo Zema as a dynamic and flexible organization, which guarantees the whole design process, from the concept to the executive details. Their projects are frequently shown on TV programmes and published in the most important architecture, design and nautical, magazines and books in all over the world.
Marcus Fischer was born in 1971. International and national trade fairs stands and exhibition concepts are evidence of his lead management. After receiving his degree in interior design in 1999 at the HDK in Berlin, he founded with three partners dan pearlman, a strategic creative agency, working interdisciplinary across the areas of brand and leisure, strategy and implementation. Marcus Fischer is responsible for clients such as smart, BMW, MINI, Atkon on behalf of Deutsche Bahn International, Roca, Museum of Arts and Crafts in Hamburg, Lufthansa or MTV.
Dreimeta
OTA+
OTA+, led by partners Kory Bieg and Alexa Getting, is a San Francisco, California based architecture, design and research office, specialized in the application of advanced digital technologies for the visualization and fabrication of projects of all types and scale. OTA+ treats every project as an opportunity to use current design software and CNC (computer numerical controlled) machine tools to both generate and construct conceptually rigorous and formally unique design proposals. OTA+ has received several awards for their work and exhibited projects at galleries internationally, including the SFMOMA, the Architectural League of New York, the Storefront for Art and Architecture, the Architectural Association in London, the Universidad de Monterrey Centro and the AIA Gallery in San Francisco. Their work has been published worldwide in books, blogs, magazines and journals. 316
Dennis Wong
Dennis Wong, a degree holder in Industrial Design of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, is a specialist in spatial planning, exhibition design and the staging of mega-events. As creative director for two international exhibition design companies in the 1980s, he enriched his international experience and exposure by working in China, Japan and Singapore. In 1992 he formed Oval Design Limited with the aim of realizing his personal design aspirations to the full. Under his leadership, the company’s capabilities in design and project implementation have grown from strength to strength. Today, the company is renowned for its ability to integrate sophisticated multidisciplinary design elements including stage lighting, audiovisual effect, multi-media presentations, computer programming with topnotch project implementation to meet the communication needs of clients.
Dreimeta was founded by Armin Fischer in 2003. His team of creative minds works on international projects and on local or regional tasks alike. Dreimeta's aim is to create rooms with their own identity and character. Their approach: to add an emotional appeal to the room - with interior design that tells tales and touches your senses. But still functionality is always part of their concept. Functionality is always part of their concept and sometimes leads to unexpected design solutions. Most of Dreimeta's tasks originate from the hotel and gastronomy industry or shop/office design concepts. Time and again they take on work for private clients. The Dreimeta network is interdisciplinary; depending on the task, They call in further specialists to work with Dreimeta in mutual collaboration. A cross-over of architects, interior designers, gastronomes, designers, marketing experts and psychologists bring the necessary input for individual solutions with a different outcome each time. J. MAYER H Architects’ studio
Founded in 1996 in Berlin, Germany, J. MAYER H Architects’ studio, focuses on works at the intersection of architecture, communication and new technology. From urban planning schemes and buildings to installation work and objects with new materials, the relationship between the human body, technology and nature form the background for a new production of space. Jürgen Mayer H. is the founder and principal of this crossdisciplinairy studio. He studied at Stuttgart University, The Cooper Union and Princeton Universtiy. His work has been published and exhibited worldwide and is part of numerous collections including MoMA New York and SF MoMA. National and international awards include the Mies-van-der-Rohe-Award-Emerging-Architect-Special-Mention-2003 ,Winner Holcim Award Bronze 2005 and Winner Audi Urban Future Award 2010. Jürgen Mayer H. has taught at Princeton University, University of the Arts Berlin, Harvard University, Kunsthochschule Berlin, the Architectural Association in London, the Columbia University, New York and at the University of Toronto, Canada.

plajer & franz studio is an international and interdisciplinary team of 45 architects, interior architects and graphic designers based in Berlin. All project stages – from concept to design as well as rollout supervision – are carried out in-house. Marcus Fischer was born in 1971. International and national trade fairs stands and exhibition concepts are evidence of his lead management. After receiving his degree in interior design in 1999 at the HDK in Berlin, he founded with three partners dan pearlman, a strategic creative agency, working interdisciplinary across the areas of brand and leisure, strategy and implementation. Marcus Fischer is responsible for clients such as smart, BMW, MINI, Atkon on behalf of Deutsche Bahn International, Roca, Museum of Arts and Crafts in Hamburg, Lufthansa or MTV.

OTA+, led by partners Kory Bieg and Alexa Getting, is a San Francisco, California based architecture, design and research office, specialized in the application of advanced digital technologies for the visualization and fabrication of projects of all types and scale. OTA+ treats every project as an opportunity to use current design software and CNC (computer numerical controlled) machine tools to both generate and construct conceptually rigorous and formally unique design proposals. OTA+ has received several awards for their work and exhibited projects at galleries internationally, including the SFMOMA, the Architectural League of New York, the Storefront for Art and Architecture, the Architectural Association in London, the Universidad de Monterrey Centro and the AIA Gallery in San Francisco. Dennis Wong
Dennis Wong, a degree holder in Industrial Design of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, is a specialist in spatial planning, exhibition design and the staging of mega-events. As creative director for two international exhibition design companies in the 1980s, he enriched his international experience and exposure by working in China, Japan and Singapore. In 1992 he formed Oval Design Limited with the aim of realizing his personal design aspirations to the full. Under his leadership, the company’s capabilities in design and project implementation have grown from strength to strength. Today, the company is renowned for its ability to integrate sophisticated multidisciplinary design elements including stage lighting, audiovisual effect, multi-media presentations, computer programming with topnotch project implementation to meet the communication needs of clients.
Dreimeta was founded by Armin Fischer in 2003. His team of creative minds works on international projects and on local or regional tasks alike. Dreimeta's aim is to create rooms with their own identity and character. Their approach: to add an emotional appeal to the room - with interior design that tells tales and touches your senses. But still functionality is always part of their concept. Functionality is always part of their concept and sometimes leads to unexpected design solutions. Most of Dreimeta's tasks originate from the hotel and gastronomy industry or shop/office design concepts. Time and again they take on work for private clients. The Dreimeta network is interdisciplinary; depending on the task, They call in further specialists to work with Dreimeta in mutual collaboration. A cross-over of architects, interior designers, gastronomes, designers, marketing experts and psychologists bring the necessary input for individual solutions with a different outcome each time. J. MAYER H Architects’ studio
Founded in 1996 in Berlin, Germany, J. MAYER H Architects’ studio, focuses on works at the intersection of architecture, communication and new technology. From urban planning schemes and buildings to installation work and objects with new materials, the relationship between the human body, technology and nature form the background for a new production of space. Jürgen Mayer H. is the founder and principal of this crossdisciplinairy studio. He studied at Stuttgart University, The Cooper Union and Princeton Universtiy. His work has been published and exhibited worldwide and is part of numerous collections including MoMA New York and SF MoMA. National and international awards include the Mies-van-der-Rohe-Award-Emerging-Architect-Special-Mention-2003 ,Winner Holcim Award Bronze 2005 and Winner Audi Urban Future Award 2010. Jürgen Mayer H. has taught at Princeton University, University of the Arts Berlin, Harvard University, Kunsthochschule Berlin, the Architectural Association in London, the Columbia University, New York and at the University of Toronto, Canada.

plajer & franz studio is an international and interdisciplinary team of 45 architects, interior architects and graphic designers based in Berlin. All project stages – from concept to design as well as rollout supervision – are carried out in-house.
