PREFACE
Eco-Tech Parks: the architecture of our times shapes the future
Designing means giving new life to an idea, shaping creatively what the man will have to do and which is going to impact on his life. Today, the true challenge is to take a sustainable approach towards every planning choice, with the aim of building a bridge between the interior space of a building and its surrounding environment, thus of establishing tight relationships between man and territory, and between driven towards innovation and energy saving. However, what are the core principles of a sustainable project? We need to adopt a broader perspective than before, reviewing all ethic, aesthetic and ecological issues critically and integrating them into one single framework. Technology is the most powerful and stimulating tool we have today for integrating what the man imagines and realize with the environment, while respecting it. Key innovation and technology centers are sprouting all over the world, thanks to a planning strategy which is turning wide disused areas in important places where research and development activities are lively and in constant ferment: these are the Eco-Tech Parks. Eco-Tech Parks act as a links between knowledge production and market, becoming an effective instrument able to make the path to innovation easier, shorter and less expensive, while aiming at strengthening the mutual exchange between scientific research and production of goods and services. These vast areas become real hi-tech incubators, suitable places where new ideas and findings from high-level scientific research can be transformed in an enterprise, thus stimulating collaborative relationships between research organizations and companies. As an Architect, I do believe in the crucial opportunities and changes originating in these places, by these workshops where today our future is molded. The real challenge architecture has to face is to find the good way to apply scientific research carried out and experimented in tech parks, to the planning of the buildings, in order to create structured, functional and eco-friendly systems. Adopting sustainable technologies in eco-parks and using natural resources as energy sources is what makes these places innovative, laying the foundations for the planning of our future. From this point of view, Eco-Tech parks are not only the ideal environment for companies of the global knowledge economy, they also actively promote a culture of innovation, which involves us in a both experimental and practical way.
From micro to macro levels, every imagined-planned-realized element opens a dialogue between products, contexts and buildings, which not only have to be “smart”, but also have to be smartly conceived. And the only way to achieve this is to integrate sustainable approaches and solutions while respecting the planet and its future. Massimo Roj

序 言
Industry parks for the future
When I arrive in China from Europe and my airplane is landing in Pudong, I see hundreds of blue roofs. These are the typical old factories. I think this image will change rapidly.
What can we expect form future Industry parks? It will be sevaral things. First of all the question of making China more sustainable will have its influence in Industry parks as well. Government that takes the message seriously will develop Industry Parks base on green principles. Clients that look forward asking for LEED ND (Neighborhood Development) certification. For sure this will change the Industry parks.
Also the growing demand for openess will change the thinking about Industry Parks. Food safety is an important issue and it is a concern for many consumers. The serious food producing companies will open their gates for the consumers and invite them to have a look and see and experience the quality of their products.
How will these future Industry Parks look? First of all the Industry Parks will look nice, friendly and green to receive the public. The common gated Industry Parks will change in more open places. Of course not for every company. There will be companies that have to protect there products and the production process. But more and more companies will be willing to more openess.
Green design will introduce principles like walkable streets with entrances to the street, with nice shaded walkways, with separate bicycle lanes and rapid public transport. The green areas will also deal with storm water during heavy rainfall. Certain areas will have the capacity to buffer water and in this way to avoid flooding of buildings.
The digital age will bring new infrastructure with high speed internet and smart grids that make energy use very efficient. Wireless network makes it possible to walk around and stay connected. If staff like a short break but it is really needed to finish a job, it will be possible to sit outside in a nice shaded park to do that job. Roofs of buildings will be solar (blue) or roofgarden (green) or maybe a combination of both with solar systems that will shade the roofgardens. Nowadays already many international companies start to use company gardens for staff that like to grow some fresh fruits or vegetables for lunch. The idea that it is important to keep qualified staff in a nice and healthy working environment have become more and more common in the Western world. Chinese governement and Chinese companies understand this and go into the same

The 90,000sqm Cristalia Business Park, located in Spain’s capital city, consists of eleven buildings, including office towers, restaurants and a hotel. The landscaping project, which began with an international competition among world-class architectural firms, also includes the development of civil works and a small sports area in a parcel of over 50,000 sqm. RTKL’s design scheme emphasizes interior spaces and uses landscaped and gardened green areas, restaurants and park terraces to create a quiet and attractive environment for pedestrians and workers inside the buildings. Moreover, RTKL established a series of spaces that are inspired by the Spanish landscape and vernacular built environment: a central water feature with an adjacent grass surface reminds one of the river shores; the rhythmic placement of olive trees reminds one of Southern Spain; and the geometric rows of seasonal scent plants and flowering shrubs remind one of the cultivated fields of Spanish countryside. RTKL selected local species of plants and trees to reduce cost, maintenance, and environmental impact. Accordingly, a minimal amount of paved surfaces cultivate an undisturbed sanctuary feel. Environmental graphic enhancements round out the space offer a unified vision of the natural, regionally-inspired space.

Biomedical Research Park of Barcelona The architects proposed a large platform that arranged the site which was quite irregular. The placing of a building raised in the form of a trunk with an elliptical cone, cut diagonally, has enabled them to organize the setting and relate calmly with the nearby volumes. The elliptical shape arises from the need to adapt a very large building (some 35,000 m2 above ground level) on a very tight-fitting site, irregular in shape and with different surrounding volumes. The construction was planned necessarily compact in order to adapt to the site, but scales down towards the sea, softening the seafront and adapting to the buildings of the promenade, which in this part are low in height. At the back, on the side facing the city, it was decided to raise the building since it had sufficient space. This staggered form towards the sea enables solar plaques to be placed on the roof to produce hot water and electricity. The interior of the building is emptied to create a new reality independent of the setting, which frames and controls the sea views and which also enables the sunlight to be controlled. The structure of the building is suspended some 7 meters all around its perimeter. The covering of the façade was planned in light, wooden openwork, without touching the ground; the aim is to take away weight in a building which for its compact and unitary conception is large in size. This second skin must enable good light and energy control of the building.

Five office buildings will form an urban quarter in what was once an industrial and now is an office area of Służewiec. The complex will neighbour on a group of office buildings that make up the Mokotów Business Park. The underlying compositional concept aims to create a clear layout of peripheral development and diversify the external and internal character of the quarter. Each building consists of two parts: an elongated rectangle forming part of the street frontage, and a nearly regular cube set in a freely planned green garden interior. The diversified formula of the facades of the different components emphasizes their different roles in the urban space. Dense vertical divisions of street-facing elevations of stainless-steel elements contrast with the glazed cubes featuring large horizontal divisions.

The basic idea of this project is to provide possibility of future extension for the sustainable office buidling and factories. From the view of public effect, the design must have both visual attraction and educational insight. The newly-developed buildings have to reflect the entreprise philosophy of Yunnan Baiyao. That’s how the design focuses on how to present the city of flower of Yunnan Province. This also means that this project is different from traditional factory design. The site is designed to be an urban oasis with herbal garden, landscape and wetland. The site is composed of hills and plain. The landscape on the green roofs dissolves into the whole landscape design. Besides the green envelope, the building is also green from inside To outside. The plantation on the roof collects rain water and the grey water produced on site can be filtered in the wetland. The buildings are overlapped with each other to maximize the use of land. This efficient and flexible design method reserves enough land for future extension. The headquarters project started with a competition in 2007. Sustainable principles were used to develop the site. The basic idea of this project is to provide the possibility of future extension for the sustainable office building and factories. The newly-developed buildings reflect the entreprise philosophy of Yunnan Baiyao as a modern enterprise based on tradition.

FGMF Arquitetos
JEMS Architekci was established in 1988, but the architectural team headed by the JEMS Partners has been in practice continuously since 1980, as one of the first private architectural firms to emerge in the Warsaw market. The firm is managed by the partners: architects Olgierd Jagiełło, Maciej Miłobędzki, Jerzy SzczepanikDzikowski and Marcin Sadowski, and President of the Management Board Wojciech Zych, who is responsible for finance and for administrative and legal matters. In 2003, the Management Board was joined by two partner architects: Paweł Majkusiak and Andrzej Sidorowicz, and in 2006 by Marek Moskal. During nearly two decades of its activity, JEMS has evolved from a small design studio into an architectural team of more than 40 persons. The partners and the architects in charge of specific assignments are responsible for the entire design and construction process, coordinating and managing the work of the whole multi-disciplinary specialist team. JEMS cooperates on a permanent basis with major design offices, designers and consultants in all fields related to the projects they work on. Since mid-2004, the JEMS architectural practice has been based in a building designed by the firm at Gagarina Street in Warsaw.
Created in 1999, FGMF produces contemporary architecture, without any restraints, regarding the use of material and building techniques, seeking to explore the connection between architecture and its environment. In these few years of existence, they ’ve had the opportunity to deal with a wide range of architectural scales, what enhances their belief that, just as life itself, architecture ought to be plural, heterogeneous and dynamic. Urban realm, cultural facilities, residences, sports complexes, hospitals, schools, commercial buildings and many other are part of the same urban landscape and of their daily life: knowing how to deal with all these programs is a way to enrich their design, in contrast to a specialized architecture. As regards the completion of hospital buildings, they should mention the continued collaboration of the Pineda Associats office. The experience accumulated over the years of working together provides the network of teams with mechanisms that enable it to deal with wide-ranging projects with total guarantee and solvency. The office works on both public and private works, especially health centers, but also schools, homes and cultural centers. The Brullet de Luna architecture studio plans architecture that is based on the user: men and women are the core of its projects. Comfort, domesticity, functionality, spatial appropriateness, ergonomics and feelings are the basis of its work. To sum up, it is a commitment to the humanisation of public and private spaces. From the technical point of view the studio prioritises the constructive act. The construction is the hard core of architecture and, therefore, the constructive rationality, the adaptation of the materials and the relationship between quality and costs are the elements around which a project s organised and which make good architecture possible.
