PREFACE
“We shape ourselves to fit this world and by the world are shaped again, the visible and invisible working together in common cause to produce the miraculous. So may we, in this life, trust to those elements we have yet to see or imagine, and look for the true shape of our own self, by forming it well to the great intangibles about us.” —David Whyte Making a home is an intensely personal experience, creating an intimate receptacle for lives, families, and dreams. It is a delicate task to create a building worthy of that function, molding concrete and steel, wood and stone into spaces that can touch one’s soul. Just as a community reflects the culture and values of a society, so a home reflects its owner’s hopes, beliefs and innermost self. Architects have the unique opportunity to shape those environments and guide who we wish to be, both as individuals and as part of the larger community of man. Light is a formidable presence that can be harsh and intrusive if not properly respected. Light has the power to make solid material glow as though translucent, to reflect a color from one place into another, to catch us by surprise, to fill

a moment with wonder — morning sun shining into a breakfast room, patterns of light from a skylight, strong shadows cast by sculpting, walls that glow as though illuminated from within — a beam of light interacting with the building and its inhabitants in a living, changing embrace. Movement should be choreographed—creating excitement, anticipation, awareness that something is about to unfold so that the dances of daily life have richness. For if a space is well conceived it will delight and arouse those intimate reactions that come from deep inside us. Buildings are static, fixed in time, place and form, yet we experience them in a dynamic way. We move through buildings physically — but also spiritually, emotionally and visually — and as we move, buildings also move—forms lay against each other in constantly changing configurations and we are pulled, invited, set at ease, our curiosity engaged. How we experience buildings can transform concrete into poetry. Embrace is one of the most important qualities of a home. As a refuge, a receptacle for family and dreams, there is real embrace — as in a courtyard, but embrace can be subtle, even invisible, yet still tangible — as in the comfort of a color, the softness of a shadow, even a large swath of glass, if it is well placed in the wall, can provide a sense of protection rather than exposure. To wrap a building around its inhabitants in an intimate embrace is the most powerful contribution architects can make, transforming life’s daily activities into richly felt, breathless moments.

Soaring Wings is divided into public and private wings. These wings are separated by a two-story, glass-and-steel bridge with stainless-steel ceilings. The master suite occupies the entire lower level of the private wing, and consists of a bedroom and sitting area, his and hers walk-in closet/dressing rooms, and the bath area. The focal point of the bath area is the 3,200-pound bathtub carved from a single block of grey granite that sits in a bed of Mexican beach pebbles, which comes through the floor-to-ceiling glass from the Japanese rock garden beyond. There are his and hers granite vanities, and a steam shower with body sprays and fixtures designed by Phillipe Starck. Plaster surface. There is a media room which is capable of being set up for the optimum home theater experience. The media room is alternatively designed to be reconfigured as a private office with a separate outside entrance. There is also a private wine cellar with shellstone entry and vaulted ceiling. Soaring Wings’ three levels are completely accessible to all regardless of age or disability. There is a three-story elevator which can comfortably accommodate five passengers or a person in a wheelchair. The elevator starts at the garage level and is ideal for bringing groceries up to the pantry and kitchen. It took the designer four years to complete the complex project. 011

AREA 1,143 m2
The River Road house, completed in 2009, is a complex composition, reminiscent of the canvases of Georges Braque, in which geometric forms appear and disappear in a constant dance of illusion and materiality. A glassskinned throughway connects and distinguishes the two dominant volumes, or towers, capturing light and adding to the sense of interior capaciousness. Exterior glass, limestone, stucco and mahogany outline, augment and anchor what otherwise might be a cacophony of disparate forms. Whether allegro, andante or largo, the varied rhythms of the internal structure are adroitly composed. Interior spaces are carefully orchestrated to conceal and reveal dramatic views to the water. In the same way, the arrangement of
program and use moves inhabitants through a logical gradient from public to private space, from activity to slumber, from conviviality to introspection. At either end of the longitudinal axis that connects the two domestic partitions, separate stairways enhance circulation and provide discrete access to the three-story parapets. The Bulthaup kitchen is enhanced by a sliding window wall which opens to an exterior courtyard, further collapsing the distinction between exterior and interior space, allowing cooling ocean breezes to breathe easily through the house. This effect further underscores the sense of spontaneous yet calculated arrangement.

The design of the Sunset Plaza Residence is primarily driven by the motivation to extend the precedent established by the modern architect Schindler, Neutra and Maston in the Hollywood Hills. The site demanded that the design could address the dramatic views from inside out while still regulating the views from outside in. The Sunset Plaza Residence is a study of how slight variations on modernist forms can address the unique nature of the site. Simple geometric forms receive subtle shifts and breaks in response to program and take advantage of dramatic 180 degree views of the Los Angeles

In plan, vectors pivot around the service core of the house, emphasizing the sight lines of the house. The unusually flat site allows the house to take advantage of the entire site, a unique opportunity for a house in the Hollywood Hills. The site is developed as a series of outdoor spaces that interlock with the ground floor spaces of the house. The expansive living space at ground level presents an unusual connection of interior and exterior spaces for a hillside residence.

STEIN RESIDENCE ARCHITECT Swatt|Miers Architects

On a majestic ridge with sweeping views of bucolic hillsides and valleys, the Stein Residence is an extreme makeover of a previous one-story, tile-roofed ranch house. Although sited advantageously on the southwest portion of the property, the original building suffered from low ceilings, a disjointed plan, and minimal glazing that failed to address its beautiful views. The strategy that evolved focused on constructing a new home, roughly within the original footprint, using the existing foundations where possible to reduce construction costs. The existing footprint was long and narrow and ran from east to west. Due to the length of the footprint and the magnificent views from the western side, the first design strategy was to create a long, linear path along the north edge, culminating with an entry court at the front door that is roughly centered on the east-west axis. The progression toward the entry is marked by the rhythm of a 034

deep, open-welled, stucco-clad trellis overhead. This structure gives a sense of enclosure to the entry while allowing maximum daylight to reflect off the sides of the trellis. The entry splits the composition into two wings connected by a two-level living/ dining space. The east wing contains the guest suite, office and wine cellar at ground level, and three children’s bedrooms on the upper level. The west wing includes the family and kitchen spaces at the ground level, and the master suite and terrace on the upper level. Landscape features include a large patio, swimming pool and fire pit on the south side of the house, and a water feature marking the entry court on the north side. Despite the constraints of using an existing foundation, the building feels entirely new, with a strong spatial organization that reorients all of the main spaces to take full advantage of the beautiful view from this hilltop setting.

In Japanese architecture, Engawa refers to the south-facing veranda edge between the interior space and the garden—the zone of horizontal connection of inside and outside, house to garden, and symbolically, form to spirit. This idea is most directly expressed in the glassy openness on the lake side of the house where the covered walkways and second-floor terraces provide sheltered engagement with the outdoors. Other references to Japanese architecture can be seen in the layered horizontal roof forms, use of timber framing, horizontal fenestration, screening devices, and celebration of materials—especially wood. Light determined the basic form and design of the house. The organizing space of the house is the Light Core, a three-dimensional timber-framed structure holding up the central and highest tier of the roof. Designed to bring light into 048

the core of the house throughout the day by means of its rooftop clerestory, it also serves as the primary spatial orientation of the home as well as its formal path of circulation. Metaphorically, it is the heart of the house. There were many technical challenges to address (such as the high water table, geothermal heating, and natural ventilation), and these were addressed in the typical process of analytical problem solving. A parallel intuitive process resolved analytical solutions into visible form. This part of the design process was unpredictable, open to possibility, and subject to change. The visual form of Engawa House represents the sometimes harmonious and sometimes clashing needs of these parallel paths of design.

Nestled on a rocky slope near the top of Arbutus Road in Cadboro Bay, “Armada” is an artistic study in contemporary West Coast construction, a fine sculpture of space and simply a work of art. The foyer operates as the access point to the rest of the house. This inner connection point keeps the entire house in balance. This space funnels a cascading waterfall of natural light into the middle of the house through a profusion of windows. Clerestory windows (actually, skylights) slant downward, and thus act like a prism refracting light at acute angles. At the top of the stairs is a good-sized rooftop patio, which takes advantage of views to Juan de Fuca Strait and, on a clear day, the Olympic Mountains. In the master suite, a curved half-wall anchors the built-in night tables and Asian-style bed, its unusual angle optimizing the views of the ocean and Garry oaks just outside the patio. Back down the stairs, through the atrium and over is Lorne’s private office with cherry built-in desk and stunning ocean view through a panoramic window. The Haus am Weinberg is located in a setting that was at one time rural, yet suburban. The inner circulation, organisation of the views and the programme distribution of the house are determined by a single gesture, “the twist”. This is enabled by the building’s load bearing concrete structure which is reduced to a minimum. Roof and slabs are supported by four elements only: elevator shaft, two pillars and one inner column. A double-height, glazed corner — which houses the dining area — opens up to extensive views towards the northwest and frames the vineyard hill which forms the backdrop to the house. By means of sliding panes, this corner of the house can fully open up to further blur the boundaries between inside
and outside. The interior of the Haus am Weinberg is arranged into spaces of varying atmospheres and spatial qualities, with the four glazed and open corners allowing daylight to reach deep into the house. The material of the interior of the house further accentuates the overall atmosphere of light by means of natural oak flooring, natural stone and white clay stucco walls speckled with small fragments of reflective stone. In contrast, at the core of this light and flowing structure is a multi-purpose darker room, dedicated to music, masculine conviviality. The design of the garden landscaping extends the organisation of the house, with the garden forming a continuation of the diagonals of the floor plans and each division creating different zones for function and planting. 113

We were commissioned to design a contemporary family home on a 1 acre site, situated at the end of a spur, in Simbithi Eco-Estate. The client called for a home with an overriding sense of simplicity but with a high degree of sophistication. All the living areas and bedroom suites face onto a panoramic vista, which includes a dense forest down-slope from the house. The palette of natural materials, including timber screens, decking and cladding, off-shutter concrete and stone cladding, juxtapose with the aggressive architectural form-making, creating a home that is not only visually and spatially exciting, but also comfortable and intimate. The extensive use of water in the design of the home includes a 25-metre lap pool with a glass panel between the water and the basement cinema room, and a shallow but expansive reflective pond on the approach side, which mirrors the building day and night, and evokes a sense of tranquility.

The architectural style of the home is heavily influenced by the “Googie” architecture of the American architect John Lautner. The origin of the name “Googie” dates to 1949, when architect John Lautner designed the West Hollywood coffee shop, “Googie”, which had distinct architectural characteristics. “Googie” architecture is a form of modern architecture and a subdivision of futurist architecture with stylistic conventions influenced by, and representing 1950s American society’s fascination and marketing emphasis on futuristic design, car culture, jets, the Space Age, and the Atomic Age. “Googie” was also characterized by design forms symbolic of motion, including upswept roofs, curvaceous geometric shapes, and the bold use of glass, steel and neon, the spirit of which is embodied in Albizia House.

This family home defines itself primarily by the way the principal living spaces at level two relate to the surrounding portions of site. This floor accommodates two generous living rooms, an open plan kitchen and triple volume dining room. Virtually all rooms open out to adjacent terraces or garden spaces, which allows the house to fully utilize the small property. A dramatic open tread staircase and lift core, with a generous skylight creates a central spine which connects all the floors comfortably. Even the lowest level — which is a predominantly double volume gallery space formed by the cavernous space below the main living level and the steep natural ground line —has generous natural light via the stairwell and skylights. This floor accommodates a cellar, large wall surfaces for the client’s art collection, pool table, bar and open media room. The next half level accommodates the staff quarters and plant room. As noted above, the second floor accommodates the main living rooms, which enjoy fantastic views, and connection to portions of gardens to the east and north. The third and fourth floor accommodates four west facing en suite bedrooms, a triple garage, a study and the entrance hall at street level. Views and a unique set of finishes enrich the otherwise compact size of most rooms. All rooms enjoy fantastic views and connection to the exterior. Art walls are highlighted in the interior and the configuration of the interior décor was designed to show these off. Robust finishes were used internally including unpainted galvanised steel, off shutter concrete, zinc wall cladding all of which are softened with an abundance of hard and soft woods used with rich stonework. Bespoke furniture adds to the gallery environment creating a rich interior of depth and refinement which is timeless.

Built on the site of an old World War II bunker on the edge of a cliff, Cliff House maximizes its commanding position to create a house that is not only dramatic but, with the incorporation of historical elements, also quite magical and mysterious. The ground floor of the house, designed to facilitate seamless indoor and outdoor living and entertainment, is arranged in an L-shape around the pool, the pool terrace and the garden. The formal living and dining areas project out over the cliff where they hang over the Atlantic Ocean enjoying panoramic sea views as well as a view back to the house. The kitchen includes both an open or “American” part and a separate traditional kitchen. This together with the garage and staff facilities runs along the east-west axis and the northern side of

the boundary. The main bedroom and the two children’s rooms are placed on this upper level. One of the features of the house is the spiral staircase which is clad in stainless steel, while the treads use white granite. To add to the sense of continuity between the levels, stainless steel rods run from the first floor handrail to the lower ground floor, making the stairwell look like a sculptural steel cylinder. A skylight above the stairwell as well as floor-to-ceiling glazing in the lounges adds to the sense of transparency. The main bedroom suite opens up onto a large terrace which is the roof of the more formal living wing of the house and the element which projects out to the ocean. The main bathroom opens out onto a private garden and outdoor shower. 285

With a unique plot, due to its size, location and views, the owner could only dream for a relaxed and peaceful summer house. In order to satisfy his demand we decided to enhance its views while protecting its outdoor areas. The project consists of five blocks which contain a main block with a living and dining area with the best views to the sea and its swimming pool, which is completely protected from the wind placed in the center of the project.
The other blocks contain a service area and other guest room blocks. This independence is crucial to make its guests get the feeling of being alone in a hotel. The gallerias that surround these concrete blocks end up, creating the idea of outdoor living rooms and creating a fluid transition between the interior and the exterior with a fantastic panoramic view.

The Courtyard House is designed with a grid of 7’x7’. The house has been designed in such a way that all the living spaces and passage face open space and garden, which was also the main design concept since its inception, thus creating a central courtyard which holds the reflection pool making it a major design element. This also makes the design an introvert one, leaving garden at backside but still visible and accessible from all the rooms of house. Formal living room comes first along with 2 bedrooms followed by 9’ wide passage parallel to central courtyard and reflection pool. Passage ends to dining room and family room. This area is a maximum used area, thus has a big verandah all three sides, which adds the value to north side garden. house throughout the day. It is also a crucial feature in Ahmedabad climate. Here light is essential but not a scorching heat. Screens and deep verandah protect these huge openings from harsh sun. Verandahs also become wonderful outdoors spaces during relatively cool evenings and mornings. The Courtyard House is made of RCC roof structure covered with wood. Also verandah and upper rooms are covered with wood. Floors are covered with natural marble stone & wooden planks. Custom designed doors and windows are made of wood and laminated glass. Basic principles of architecture have been applied to the house and use of art & art-objects makes the spaces of “timeless” quality.

Situated at the outskirts, this land is surrounded with a lot of greenery. The brief of the owner was to create an open plan which could communicate well with all areas, and the owner left the rest on the architects wherein they had good amount of freedom to design. The architecture mainly translates the house into three different blocks. One being a white block which serves as an entrance into the house. Second being the wooden block clad with sesame wood pattis to create an uneven texture. The third is the double-heighted skewed block on the side of the pool. Together these three create an interesting skewed facade with straight lines. The architects’ ideology is mainly based on a minimalistic approach where less is more. The layout is also quite organized and at the same time interactive. The layout is such that each area is well connected with outdoors and there is perfect communication between public and private areas of the house. The bridge between public and private areas is the dining room which is very well connected with living room, home theatre, kitchen one side and all bedrooms the other side. It also flows into the outdoor areas consisting of swimming pool
and Zen garden. The huge and shallow water body creates a nice mirroring effect of the front facade and also doubles up as a soft water feature. The beautiful walkway of the house, which floats on this water body, leads one to the entry foyer where an antique wooden chest with three welcoming statues awaits one. The tree motif on rough wall creates a wonderful backdrop of this area. The skylight enhances this rough wall with natural daylight during daytime. The foyer is placed such that it connects to the living as well as the home theatre. The main hub of the house is the dining where all the public and private areas converge. The twelve-seater dining table here has an antique finish with a similar looking divider and crockery unit. Two large openings on both sides of the dining connect it to the swimming pool on one side and Zen garden on the other. This area further flows into the central foyer of the house which is connected to the four bedrooms on ground floor and a staircase which leads to another bedroom on first floor.

The Coleman Residence explores the illusion of the home as a holiday retreat, exploiting the tapering boundaries with a vanishing point that meets in the neighbouring property. It engages with the possibility of spatial illusion resulting from the perspective approach to spatial construction and the relationship of the everyday experience of the family residence. The vanishing point is denied visibility by a wall at the end of the property that serves to exaggerate the illusion with an installation by the artist Jurek Wybraniec. Analogous to a wedge of Camembert cheese, the tactile and delicious materials are reserved for the interior spaces and courtyards. The large, anonymous, external white walls 332

resonate as powerful barriers, carefully concealing the internal richness of the private world. All spaces are organized as a series of wedges that connect to the illusory vanishing point. These wedges collect interior and exterior space. Driving through the middle of the residence is a wedge of recycled jarrah, a large deck that starts at the street boundary and ends 1.5m back from the rear boundary. This wedge connects the interior and exterior forming spaces of ambiguity and creating a resonating curved court that brings the exterior deep into the interior.

The clients came to our office with the intention of moving into property development. Common ground was that they were focused on presenting projects with high design content supporting a different visual approach. In the early design phase we were looking to create an open, more interactive street presence which led to a very different design response. The actual front facade is inspired by the study of 1960s and early 1970s stereo cabinets with the slatted timber reflecting the slotted speaker elements, in this case they accommodate the covered entry and private en-suite window. The house sits lightly balanced on angled steel posts again reminiscent of the stereo cabinet legs, which afford the house the appearance of floating out across the land. The project sits well in its treed environs, Silvertop Ash was chosen as the cladding because its eventual grey colour will blend completely and afford a sense of belonging in the treed backdrop. Silvertop Ash timber has a unique ability to assimilate into the surrounds, offering a very different visual affect. To the north the timber is still evident but only on the third storey—as from this vantage point we wanted the upper level to appear 342
as a tree house. ExoTec Facade Panel System is the other main material used because it offers a refreshing contrast to the timber. The cut-out element of the living area window directs the line of sight down to the pool, BBQ area and backyard space while protecting privacy. The interior begins with a flat veneer wall on approach. Its intention is to create the feeling of being at the base of a huge tree. Practically, it houses the cloak, powder room, cellar and on into the integrated kitchen. It’s all achieved with hidden doors that, when opened, offer an unexpected surprise. This house is open yet private and the timber feature wall of the interior invites a journey of discovery. The cantilevered box on the street facade internally houses the day bed and library which interacts with the study space. The study has a glass splash back wall chosen for it's ability to reflect the outer landscape. A dumbwaiter is included which travels up from the garage into the scullery that resides behind one of the four integrated doors in the kitchen area. The classic Calcutta marble has been used in the bathrooms, while the kitchen has Caesar stone bench tops and a preparation cube at the end of the main island bench.

Estudio Martin Gomez Arquitectos It is not usual to find that the same line of action and thought will impregnate a trademark in a city. Rarer still is that one person can exercise a decisive influence on it. However, that is the case of Punta del Este and the architect Mart铆n G贸mez. Obsessed by being able to contextualize his works within the landscape in which he is immersed, Mart铆n G贸mez takes his work for more than just simple orders. They turn into a complex process in which the architect, interior, landscape and graphic designer tasks overlap. His projects are tinted with an originality that main parts of the use of natural resources are in direct communication with their surroundings. The most striking ability of his proposal is the talent to display in time a common thread throughout all of his projects, regardless of the type, the scale, the context or their materiality.
