Science park is organization managed by some professionals in science field, whose main aim is to increase the wealth of the park by promoting cultural innovation and the competitiveness of its associated businesses and knowledge-based institutions. Science park is a sort of specialised industrial parks, which allows under the best possible conditions, the interaction between education, research and technology development. In the enterprises here, services and products are of high-tech nature and usually focus in the fields of IT, electronics and telecommunications, public health, energy and environment. Science park stimulates and controls the flow of knowledge and technology amongst universities, companies and markets. Providing facilitation for communication among different professionals is one of its important features and this core spirit has to be readable at the design of the whole institution.

Culture Park and Modern City For a fast developing country such as China, the economic imperative to develop new urban work space and the associated housing is very strong. The construction of cultural space can easily lag behind as its necessity isn’t always superficially obvious. However, in recent years the strong desire to create culture park is a measure of China’s intention to ensure that urban development is matched with the sophisticated urban network and to provide places for work, living and leisure. After surfing the internet and walking, visiting park is the next most popular leisure activity in China. Culture park is an important urban response to this desire to visit outdoor space. Critically culture park combines the experience of traditional “green” park with that of public amenities such as libraries, museums and galleries. This cultural mix offers a more sophisticated and contemporary experience that has an educational function at its core.

The challenge for the design of new urban space is to develop a modern city that properly reflects the new information age and one that results in a sophisticated, richly layered urban culture. It is easy to take a reactionary view and treat such technology as an opposition to physical urban space and mutually exclusive worlds. If we embrace and hybridize the digital culture, we can construct new urban space. Dataset and information cloud can be new raw materials for our cities, and they can both inform and reform. GPS and communication technology, sensing systems and interactive space can enhance and enrich our experience to create new ecologies of cybernetic cities. Indeed, it could easily be argued that the rapidly urbanizing of the world invents new cities, but in this process, the intervention of information technology is necessary. Culture park should be at the forefront, and be the essential projects, in this case.

Technological Park of Jinqiao is the opportunity to carry on the development planning already engaged on the site. It is thus from the spatial structure initiated by Jinqiao that we have developed the planning of the park. The proposed concept continues and completes on-site developments. The main point of our design is the empty area created by the lake, around which buildings are harmoniously laid out in order to preserve enjoyable surrounding. The layout of the buildings respects the applicable regulations of the site, and offers a dynamic and contemporary feel, both soft and environmental-friendly. The outline is characterized by a continuous and fluctuating shell cut which offers noise protection on the one hand, and sun protection on the other hand.

With the erection of the “science park” in the immediate vicinity of the Johannes Kepler University, the objective was to bring together economy and research and draw research expertise to Linz. In keeping with the standards of a modern scientific working climate, particular attention is paid to creating open areas between the uniform structures and creating spaces to encourage communication and activity.

To plan both outdoor and indoor communication spaces, the individual elongated block is divided into two parts. The glazed central area not only allows daylight to enter the lower levels via the large indoor hall but also creates communicative zones. Finally, the horizontal bending of the elongated block arises out of consideration to the existing structures. Moreover, the height of the building corresponds to the upper edge of the slope to the north and at the same time to the eaves of the residential buildings to the south. All in all, it is essential for the project to “crouch” into the landscape. Above this, hover the office wings between which the landscape flows into the grounds,a measure which is used to overcome the difficult task of tying the new structure to the existing landscape. At one side of Science Park Linz, the ground has been recessed enough so that one enters the underpass at ground level. A gradually sloping ramp leads through the park to the buildings at the side of university campus.

The design is based on the urban planning in terms of architectural form and shape. It is well-arranged that an east-west green corridor is created between Qingjian Lake and the inner lake of the town and a green walking corridor extends throughout the research and development area from north to south. Ventilation is paid special attention to, therefore, wind is likely to reach to every corner of the building to take away heat and dirt from the ground. A number of light and ventilation wells and side openings are created in the underground garage to guarantee natural ventilation, which greatly reduces the number of the exhaust ducts in the basement, and the noise and vibration when they work, and increases the storey height. With the natural light from the patio, the underground enjoys well-diffused light which improves the space quality. The ground floor is raised with 1.2 meters to avoid water overflow and wet ground on rainy days. All these provide good natural ventilation and lighting for the underground garage, making it bright and spacious. Some measures are taken to keep the enclosed structure warm to reduce temperature difference, avoiding moisture condensation. Sun shields in

different forms are installed on the east, south, west sides of the building and the air flow among the walls can also lower the temperature. The value of ki, the external sunshade correction coefficient, is adjusted to reduce the external surface heat load and the demand for air conditioning at the same time to meet the visual and energy-saving requirements. The sun shields vary in position and form according to their functions and direction of the building. In this project, perforated aluminum sun shields are mostly used to regulate the sun radiation in summer.

Roof greening can improve the micro-climate of the partial area, alleviate the urban heat island effect, protect the building waterproof layer, extend its service life, reduce dust and smog floating in the air, reduce the runoff formed on the roof when it rains, take full advantage of the space, save resources and reduce noise by 3-8 db.

Science Park in Granada is the extending for Granada Science Museum, located near Genil River. It posits roof with slight inflections that is similar to an open hand, beneath which houses the different themed spaces interwoven in a spatial continuum.

In the park, the roof adopts continuous angled plane that floats above the sloping plane of the ground, and these two planes enclose a huge exhibition spaces between them, with the light that penetrates between the roof’s angles emphasizing the places of communication and relation.

The empty space connecting all themed spaces—the Macroscope, Biodome, Technoforum, Health Sciences, Al-Andalus, auditoria and spaces for temporary and permanent exhibitions—organizes the communications and logistics and relates to the park’s activities as a whole.

The great roof displays a silhouette that recalls the skyline of the mountains of Granada. The resolution of the great topographical roof adapts to volumetric needs, which generate within them closed spaces of great size and height that accommodate different themed spaces. The roof hovers above the terrain, constructing a new topography that, by being angled, organizes in its angles the skylights that endow the spaces of connection and circulation with natural light.

The proposed spatial structure allows for great flexibility in terms of interweaving activities of different routes and themes. In general, most of the projects in the park are developed based on the topographies, and they employ a succession of roofs with fluctuation and various shapes. In this way, the spatiality and constructional autonomy of the roof as a continuous element is converted into a sequential relationship of intercommunicating spaces.

64

The grid of the roof is resolved with a double-layered, three-dimensional structure that includes technical systems and installation networks, thus solving drainage and rain run-off. The skylights punctuate the roof as a continuation of the main structure.

Campus Palmas Altas transforms the typical image of commercial park and becomes a new reference in sustainable architecture. It aims to create a real community, compact and grouped around a courtyard. This consistent and logical space arrangement that increases interaction and collaboration among employees is based on a system of exterior spaces, gardens and leisure areas, reflecting the vernacular Andalusian architecture. This design presents high-tech environmental technologies such as photovoltaic panels, a trigeneration plant, methanol fuel cells, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems and lighting, both efficient and sustainable. Energy saving criteria has been applied to all design aspects: from the buildings’ geometry based on compact forms to the enveloping building’s composition, the distribution and design of the solar control devices or the choice of the materials.

In Collaboration with CABR China Academy of Building Research, Wang Weijen Architecture

AD+RG was appointed as the architectural design consultant for Beijing Mobile E-Town Science Park. The design focuses on international, intelligent and low-carbon technology, combines advanced technology with actual engineering practice in China. The park is going to be an international technology exchange centre for IT industry with around 550,000 sqm construction area. With multi-platform designs and flexible internal space, it provides conference rooms, incubators, research laboratories and offices of different sizes. The park includes a hotel, grade A offices, residential and F&B retails. Cultural elements and concepts are applied in the design and planning of its internal Commercial Street. “Human Oriented” is put as the major planning principle. Separation of pedestrian traffic flow with the vehicle traffic is diligently considered. The integration of “work, life, rest and training” is to delight everyone in the park. The organic integration of different functions forms the primary and secondary

spatial relationships between building blocks, thus further creates the space imagery of excitement and peace. The fluentness of the outdoor space fully considers the behavior characteristics of the users, at the same time, takes care of its transitional continuity. The architectural design concept inspired by bio-technology creates interactive and sharing atmosphere. Two residential buildings are placed along riverside for enjoying the best views. We also made sure the views from the office buildings can be maximized. In the park, architecture is more than functional composite, but it enables and facilitates human interaction and communication. Besides, technological characteristics are reflected by the appearances of various buildings. Environmental-friendly and energy-saving design is presented by the dedicated allocation of vertical and horizontal fins, solid glass wall panels at the external wall design.

The design of this park is characterized by a compact center and four mixed-used (residential, work, shopping, leisure). An approx. 1,250,000 m² greenery area extending along the river from north to south across the entire planning area forms the backbone of the park. The compact center is concentrated in structure and will be brought to life by the businesses, restaurants, and cultural facilities in it. Prestigious highrises that are visible from afar will mark the center. Furthermore, each quarter will also boast its own center, which the inhabitants will be able to reach on foot, and which has all requisite facilities. Basic institutions, such as an international school, a hospital etc., will be located in one of the quarters but will be for the use of all inhabitants. Sustainable development planning with diverse facilities, the prioritization of pedestrian traffic and public transport, a rainwater collection and recycling system, not to mention architecture that is highly efficient in terms of energy and planned taking presentday sustainability criteria into consideration, create the requisite conditions for a green park worth living in. Different qualities with regard to open space such as the setting on the river, the park, as well as apartments and workplaces close to outdoor areas ensure a high-quality life in the new park.

The designer equates the integrated planning of the creative industry park to a multi-dimensional event by introducing the mathematic concept of matrix. The multifaceted solution of this matrix equation is found by a comprehensive consideration and evaluation of working, studying, communications, associations, openness, privacy, hi-tech presentation, traditional Suzhou garden space, ecology and energy conservation. As the Chinese poetic line goes “Gentle breeze brings codness and the moon brings brightness, rivers present dynamic and mountains present static.” The key to modeling an overall image as well as constructing a rich, open and multidimensional space is how to skillfully balance the inside and outside space of the building complex. The core lies in the construction of public communication space. The most important thing is to make the users feel the interactions between the buildings and the surroundings and the ever-changing views every step they move. The user can also experience the traditional Suzhou architectural technique “borrowing” in this creative industry park. An innovative regional space image—a regular hexahedron—is created. It is very much like a “Rubik’s cube”, which when rotated, has a face of one or many colors. Rubik’s cube has greatly inspired the creative industry park complex. Be it individual building or building complex, the designers have achieved the overall balance through the restructuring and comparison and presented the characteristics and levels of changes in a typical space environment, thus creating a unified ensemble as well as varied parts. A change on the micro scale can be detected in the integral space environment. Vivid colors—creative culture, as the concept suggests, are a kind of living culture. The maximization of color application is achieved by scientifically controlling the colors of buildings with digital color toning system and coordinating the basic and contrasting colors.

Universiade Culture Park is transformed from original Baida plants in Longgang District. It reaches the main stadium in the east, Longgang Sports Center in the west, and adjoins the park of Universiade Village and faces the School of Information (Universiade Village). Uniformed green vertical striped design is applied to the facades of five buildings. This design complies with the standard of 600 modules, thus creating a bright and dynamic mechanism effect. The landscape in the Universiade Park is embraced in the culture park in order to connect the park landscape and park architecture and create a complete park system. During the design of the culture park, environmental protection, cost saving and reduction of construction time are taken into account. In order to provide a good visual corridor, the terrace landscape design is based on the accessibility of the site as well as the existing terrain elevation. The first floor of every building is enclosed by glass screen walls to maximize the space on the first floor.

location Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China / area 146,000 m2

Architect KENJI MANTANI STUDIO The project is located at the southeast of the established international unit in Baiyun District of Guangzhou. The new construction site covers a total area of 55,000 m², and is connected to the airport highway in the west and Lianhe Road in the north. With a total construction area of 110,000 m², it is a comprehensive office creative district with office buildings, commercial areas and apartments. The biggest difficulty of the project is the complex terrain and how to guide people into the district. The entrance of the new project is at the back of the established unit among scattered residential area. We borrowed the concept “Agora”, an ancient Greek public square, and divided the area into nine parts. Each part is given a different character and is connected all together, and each 210

part has its own square which creates different expressions of space. All the parts together form a “continuous square” concept, inviting people to visit and revisit. The new international unit is a factory renovation project, offering a sense of nobility and cleanness, and has become a very popular and vibrant office hub. Proprietors hope to transform the whole project into an enormous creative industrial park featuring office, entertainment and residence.

location Beijing, China

National Advertising and Creative Industry Park

The new advertising and creative arts zone in Beijing aims at rivalling the success of areas such as SOHO in London and Madison Avenue in New York. The park is located at the south of the Central Business District of Beijing. It will house both Chinese and international advertising and creative industry companies, and is intended to be a national hub for these sectors. The new neighbourhood is defined by a parallel main avenue and riverside park. The avenue is lined with a series of three to five-storey buildings, all of which include ground level display and retail spaces, intended to bring a genuine “street life” to the district. At the centre of the masterplan is a public square and pedestrian zone, which connects north across a new bridge to the CBD and south to the new museum and conference centre. The scale of these blocks is manipulated to create an intimate feel around the public square whilst

presenting the museum and conference building as a major civic amenity. Tall buildings act as bookends to the scheme, in response to the wider urban context. The easterly tower provides a strong image to the Fourth Ring Road that passes close by. This tower also includes a large roof-top display screen in order to showcase advertising. The westerly end of the masterplan includes a pair of towers which sit either side of a major route connecting south Beijing with the CBD, and these towers form a gateway arrangement. All of the buildings within the masterplan have been designed to be highly sustainable, with shallow floor plates intended to allow maximum natural light and ventilation. The district is also intended to be pedestrian friendly, a rare commodity in Beijing.

ARCHITECT SASAKI ASSOCIATES, INC. Since the beginning of the 21st century, Beijing has made huge strides to solidify its position as one of the world’s great cities.

encourage social interaction, and bold landscapes to help recharge the mind, body, and spirit.

It is a city that is modernizing rapidly—skyscrapers are rising out of fallow fields, a new transportation system is extending the reach of the city, and environmental initiatives are improving air and water quality.

The district’s diversity of industry, people, and spatial relationships is aimed to foster creativity and encourage an endless stream of new ideas.

Fresh ideas are also emerging, while still embracing the rich traditions of the past. Near Songzhuang, a quiet village on the outskirts of Beijing, a unique opportunity exists to create a new urban district dedicated entirely to the cultivation of new ideas. The National Creative Cluster (NCC) is envisioned as the country’s preeminent knowledge hub, making the district a center for China’s innovative home-grown talent, and a destination for the world’s most creative thinkers. Sasaki’s master plan for NCC, selected in May 2012 for implementation, focuses on five structuring principles that underscore and support the overarching philosophy of the district: to bring industries with shared values and complementary skills and technologies together to help spark new ideas. Acting as an incubator, the success of the district is tied to its openness, where people can interact in both structured and spontaneous ways to exchange ideas and have constructive dialogues.

The first principle of Sasaki’s master plan is to integrate the urban form with the surrounding landscape. This is accomplished by creating a series of green wedges, interspersed within the urban clusters and forming a series of community parks. Second, a new transit loop creates a connection to the existing core of the Songzhuang Artists Village. Recalling the vital connections between trade and ideas, the loop encourages the movement of both people and ideas between the creative hubs at NCC and Songzhuang. Third, the plan creates a series of concentrated hubs organized along the loop, forming clusters of activity. Each hub is designed to have a unique identity, forged by a careful mix of programmatic and landscape elements. The landscape is the focus of the fourth principle, which is both beautiful and functional. These landscapes encourage biodiversity, filter stormwater, and provide seasonal interest and color. Finally, the fifth principle ensures that the landscape forms a strong connection between humans and nature. Innovation and creativity at NCC is fueled by the ability to walk on the generous trail system, grow vegetables on a rooftop terrace, or socialize with others in neighborhood parks.

To attract a talented workforce, NCC will also provide institutes for continuing education, museums and galleries for inspiration, entertainment venues to

Design combined with the natural terrain The three buildings, as three design nodes, express the characteristics of Hakka architecture, conform to the terrain and the natural ecological, and are designed with natural terrain. If we want to create a good city, not a city choking human spirituality, we need to select both the city and nature, indispensable. Both are different, but interdependent: both can improve the conditions of human existence and meaning. A city suitable for living must be an eco-city, a green city, a city with convenient transportation, and also a sustainable city.

This project is located at the north of Lingjiatan Archaeological Site, with an urban arterial road to its west, an expressway to its north and a river to its east. The topography of the site is characterized by rolling hills of lower altitude and a number of ponds of different size. The original residential area is concentrated in southwest corner near the urban arterial road and southeast corner surrounded by ponds. The site is covered by plenty of trees, which leads to a good natural condition. Established on the urban arterial road to the archaeological site, the new cultural village is now expected not only to meet the life demands of the villagers but also to show local special culture to the tourists. The project has inevitably the distinguishing features of the ancient villages in Anhui: grey tiles and white walls. As a cultural village with strong local properties, those features will be the the link between the past and the future of the city. In the new cultural village, the buildings are scattered in enclosed or half-enclosed courtyards or distrbuted in belt with bendings. The architectural forms become free and flexible. When the designers establish individual buildings instead of building groups with local traditional materials, nature will quietly emerge in your sight with meandering rivers flowing among the scattered individual buildings and trees planted around them. The new cultural village is located in the site in an open and flowing spatial attitude. Instead of being restricted by architectural forms, the functions determine the spatial structure of the buildings, making it more interesting. The individual building is endowed with the local special culture on the basis of modern architectural forms and becomes a certain being. As a carrier of cultural inheritance, it makes the traditional culture appear with new attitude in front of the world. The water from the entrance of the cultural village winds its way along the outline of the buildings, proving a beautiful picture of winding streams.
