Accommodating a spa the pool then stretches a further 14.5m, before reaching the infinity edge. Adjoining the pool is the fully equipped pavilion. Being designed at a 45 degree angle provides for a great line of sight from the kitchen area. The pavilion backs onto a tennis court providing a perfect elevated position to view a friendly tennis match. Plants used were selected to give a relaxed feel with undertones of luxury. When you enter the front garden you will be immediately struck by the elegant formality of the grounds, both of which tie in with the architecture of the home. One of the most critical properties of both the front and rear gardens is they are quite drought-resistant. Considering the current water predicament, this is obviously a much needed prerequisite when designing a new garden, but it’s not a feature usually associated with such a formal garden design. The use of boundary hedges to screen the neighbouring homes and gardens, as well as hide the boundary fences, has given the grounds a lush, timeless appeal. By using native Lilly-pilly hybrids – Syzygium australe in the front and a select form of Acmena smithii in the back – these hedges have contributed to the enduring, classical look of the property, but without the need to introduce into the mix plants with high watering needs.

Well facilitated multi-purpose spaces, interlaced and layered with selected plantings are appealing. Spaces where the plants envelop and entwine create the experience of living in the garden. The main concept with the design of this Melbourne project was to do just that. If the success of a space is how often it gets used, then this design is very successful as it gets a lot of use.

Innovating the concept of vertical garden, a wall of 7m was created with a surprising composition which has joined simple vegetation and cutting edge technological resources like image projection. In the garden, beyond the vegetation were used materials such as volcanic stones Hitam and Hijau imported from Indonesia, which have brought to the pool, a large mirror pool and walkways. Common materials were also used differently, as the iron that coats all gazebo and pergolado ceiling with steel structure.

The main bluestone terrace was designed to serve large groups while still being in scale with the home and creating a sense of intimacy through elements such as the spectacular outdoor fireplace, antique urns and sculpture. The central sycamore adds intimacy by dividing up spaces for different seating areas. Iceberg roses and lavender surround the main terrace, and Sally Holmes roses climb 3.66m up the walls giving an old world feel to the space. In addition to the roses, lavender and other more formal plants, the designers incorporated a variety of plants to encourage habitat. Since completion of the project, there have been many nesting birds on the site and the owner has connected with the nature in her garden.
