At JOI-Design, we have adopted the phrase “Shaping Atmosphere” as our mantra because this idea is at the heart of everything we do as hospitality designers. We, along with our industry colleagues, are aiming to shape just exactly the right “atmosphere” that will not only meet, but exceed, the expectations of the guests who use the spaces. To do so, it’s essential to recognise that hospitality design is a permanent compromise between functionality, housekeeping/maintenance issues, and creating a stylish environment for guests.

Over the last 10 years there has been a massive shift from prioritising functionality and ease-of-maintenance towards placing a greater emphasis upon “design”. To fully satisfy these expectations, we need to understand what kinds of guests the property wishes to attract, what marketing and business angles the hotel will adopt, and what types of amenities would be anticipated from this specific product in this location. Next we must interpret how these objectives can be translated into an atmosphere, and then envision how this desired atmosphere could be transferred into the given space.

At the same time, a designer has to have the insight – let’s call it intuition – to come up with something innovative, but not too unexpected, so that guests are intrigued by delightful surprises but also feel comfortable and nurtured. Hospitality design does not need loud and flashy new design ideas. Guest in hotels, bars, restaurants and spas want to feel safe and secure – and maybe even cosy – since usually these are places where people go to relax, recover and savour a gastronomy, wine, or spa experience. These atmospheres are quite a contrast from those of a trade fair stand or a stylish retail boutique, which are designed to be particularly dramatic in order to capture people’s attention for only a few moments rather than encourage them to linger for hours. And naturally the interior design concept of an urban bar must be different from the atmosphere of a Swiss Alpine “raclette stuebli”, just as a Ritz-Carlton hotel needs a different style than an Ibis property. Yet in all these scenarios, functionality and ease-of-maintenance cannot be forgotten. So when one digs deeper, it turns out that this idea of “Shaping Atmosphere” is a rather complex job description for hospitality design!

While travelling, a hotel becomes a second home. Sometimes I even wish hotels were my only home, even in my own city! You feel protected, every one of your wishes is fulfilled. It is soft, welcoming and gentle. At least that is how I want it to be: a little break in a crowded city, a new environment, unique and soft, where travellers share a night of rest. And a hotel is not a neutral space, it is meant to be a place of experimentation, where people can get the opportunity to test new kinds of living. Either hotels feature new experiences that you probably won’t be able to have at home, such as: a movie theatre , swimming pool, art gallery, concierge services… Or, a hotel could feature new concepts, for example within its scenography or by taking aesthetic risks, by being surrealistic-historical-ultra modern… But more and more, hotels are willing to go for "environmentally friendly". Willing to melt into the landscape – by saving energy, or by a conscious architecture. Not that they want to act low profile but the focus is more about being conscientious, and innovative.

It is very consistent with the idea of the hotel itself. While travelling you are a sponge, your senses are awake. The place you are resting in should reflect the landscape that surrounds you. So while everything was willing to go "worldwilde", hotels are turning "local" ! They belong to their location, and are inspired by it. So instead of fitting a square concept, into a round box, decorators & designers should be inspired by the architecture of its building, the colours of the streets, the landscape… That was my starting point when I started to think of the housing experience at the Hotel Paradis, opened last November and located in the centre of Paris. I walked around, looking for inspiration on the "rue des petites Ecuries " (where the hotel is located), by the typical architecture of Paris, the history and the colour of the city, and by of course the idea of comfort and rest you expect. A little home, that belongs to the neighbourhood, that melts into it, a friendly place in its environment !

The St. Regis Abu Dhabi DESIGNER Hirsch Bedner Associates(HBA)
Location Abu Dhabi, UAE
COMPLETION 2013
Marking the brand’s second hotel in Abu Dhabi and third St. Regis hotel to open in the Middle East, the St. Regis Abu Dhabi continues to reinforce Starwood’s position as a leader in luxury hospitality. The hotel, located on the vibrant Corniche in the heart of the UAE capital, has been designed by internationally-acclaimed Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA) to marry the majestic metropolitan manor design of the flagship St. Regis New York with rich Arabic culture and the opulent Art Deco era. The St. Regis Abu Dhabi features 283 sumptuouslyappointed guest rooms, including 55 elegant suites, all offering panoramic waterfront views of the Arabian Gulf. The luxurious interiors feature traditional Arabian elements, from the dentils on the crown molding on the bed posts to the subtle pattern in soft gold carpeting. The classical-style furniture is made with polished dark walnut with sleek curves and ornate detailing. The walls and ceilings are clad in white stone mosaic, with exquisite carved marble moldings at each doorway, corner and seam. The extravagant Abu Dhabi Suite is the world’s highest suspended hotel suite – loftily positioned 200 metres above ground between the two towers and offering magnificent panoramic views of the Arabian Gulf, the Corniche, and the city skyline.Spanning 1,120 square metres, the three-bedroom, two-storey suite occupies part of the skybridge connecting the Nation Towers. The Grand Drawing Room takes centre stage in the Abu Dhabi Suite - an intricate glass dome with Art Deco detailing and a dramatic bronze chandelier with cascading strands of crystals. The elaborate interiors feature 24-carat gold leaf accents, leather wall tiles, jewel-toned velvet upholstered walls, and intricate glass mosaic patterns. A graceful, curved staircase leads to the master suite, which includes a private bedroom, library, lounge and dining area. The Abu Dhabi Suite also features a spa, movie theatre, kitchen and gym, and comes with private elevator access.

Designer JOI-Design GmbH Interior Architects
Location Cannes, France
For the modernisation of JW Marriott Cannes public areas JOI-Design were charged with re-establishing the hotel’s reputation as the place to see and be seen in this glamorous destination, celebrated for its appeal amongst the international jet-set and Cannes International Film Festival, when the world’s glitterati descend upon the city each year. In referencing the site’s former occupant, the Palais des Festivals, the design concept recalls a sophisticated era of glamour that imbued the spirit of luxury without excess. Clean lines of the building’s 1980s architecture are carried into the interior design. Here, deluxe elegance is expressed through high quality materials, finely crafted details and a sophisticated palette of grey, chocolate, black and ivory accented with warm gold and champagne tones. Material finishes are pure and luxurious throughout. Entrance columns were transformed to emulate eye-catching “golden palms” with the port cochère suggesting a canopy of palm fronds. A “carpeted” staircase of dark marble inlaid with golden stone escorts guests into the hotel’s reception area. Inside, the lobby opens into an impressive five storeys in height where a dramatic light sculpture of delicate gold “leaves” cascades 20 metres into the centre, surrounded by striking marble-clad columns and rows of balconies reflected in a mirrored ceiling – all signifying a sanctuary to style and glamour.
44
Area 1,480m² (Renovation Area)
completion 2013
The design is more organic at ground level. An expansive polished pale marble floor is interspersed with seating areas defined by inlaid carpet of golden palm-frond patterns on a chocolate brown background; bronze “meridian lines” running through the marble and carpet connect separate materials and spaces. Seating includes graceful wingbacks and cosy club chairs with a communal sofa skilfully defining areas between the lobby and bar. A bar of sculptural curves in Macassar Ebony timber and burnished gold is the spot to enjoy a perfectly crafted martini while star spotting, while adjacent high-gloss Champagne tables with white leather seating are ideal for celebratory gatherings. JW Grill is an all-day-dining affair with a delightful outdoor terrace overlooking “La Croisette” and the dazzling seascape beyond. The ambience is warm and convivial, an inviting space appropriate for all occasions. Quality finishes of stone, leather and dark timber underline the stylish setting and smartly tailored upholstery provides comfort for a lingering repast. In keeping with the contemporary feel, detailing and accessories are discreet; the graceful ceiling constellation of crystal teardrop lighting a focal point as it elegantly snakes across the ceiling.

LOCATION Bangalore, India
area 1,950m2
PHOTOGRAPHER Warren Jagger, Ian Gibb
COMPLETION 2011
As guests arrive, they enter a very contemporary space, a high atrium, featuring decorative high wall panels with elaborate Indian motifs. A large, focal water feature greets guests, which was designed around the architecture of the interior that activates the centre of the Lobby. A custom-made lighting crystal shines down leading guests to the reception area. The guestroom experience proposes a beautiful contrast to the fastpaced, never stopping, city of Bangalore. The guestroom can be described as tranquil, modern, and sophisticated while continuing to evoke a sense of luxury. The guest enters a very spacious interior which is enriched by a clear glass window with enclosed closure system dividing the bath and guestroom allowing daylight into the bathroom. DiLeonardo’s vision is woven throughout various parts of the property
52
including the grand ballroom which features this unique ceiling design, inspired by women’s jewelry. Rings of custom lights and soffits in various sizes redefine grandeur. Reflecting the setting of this modern and trendsetting city, additional public spaces designed by DiLeonardo include the FEAST Restaurant, inspired by a botanica all day bistro, where nature is invited into the space like a modern architectural masterpiece. Sunlight washes over most of the dining area throughout the day. The Durbar lounge is a mix of old and new, paying homage to the royalties of Indian past while spearheading the trend for the next generation. Bene Trattoria & Bar is an authentic Italian gastronomic experience with a small town Italian feel. Lastly, the Persian Terrace located at the pool level, creates a relaxing atmosphere for enjoying unique cuisine and exotic cocktails. 53

The lobby was conceived as the arrival to this Modern Oasis. The sand coloured stone flooring is randomly inlaid floral patterns extracted from traditional Xi Xia pottery. They hint at more of the Oasis to come. As guests step in, cascading crystals on two giant walls inspired by waterfalls bring their eyes up toward the ceiling where they’ll see custom designed crystal chandeliers resembling rain showering down from clouds above. The all-day dining restaurant continues the design from the lobby lounge with its vibrant colours and dark wood but is paired with light stone flooring to translate into a slightly more casual dining environment for the day and sophisticated place to be at night. Guests entering this outlet will immediately immerse into a modern European environment as they walk past the wine tasting bar and pizza station. stripes create an memorable design. The designers created a bathroom which instead of having doors, it just had two large sliding partitions that met on a corner when closed to fully enclose (see the floor plan) the bathroom. When the partitions are open the whole bathroom, except the toilet compartment, is open to the rest of the room and looks huge. The bedroom was designed to feel very rich yet modern. In addition to the colours and finishes such as the bold use of zebra wood, we also achieved richness through creating layers in architectural and mill work design. Subject matter of trees was introduced into the art and fabric selection of the guestroom to continue the Oasis concept as well as create softness and relief to all of the modern lines. 89

A sense of place is created as DiLeonardo combines elements of the traditional Tamil culture with European contemporary design. Each area designed by DiLeonardo from stone and carpet patterns, to chandeliers, carries this element of cultural convergence that is seen throughout the hotel. Upon entering the property, traditional Tamil carving inspired stone inlay pattern on the floor leads guests from the entrance through the circular lobby formed by beautifully contemporised Jali screen suspended from above. Guests arrive to a set of very stylised registration desks done in exotic stone. Adjacent to semi-circular black marble features located at the lobby entrance, resides the lounge/café. Purposely designed to evoke a sense of luxury and elegance that was the European Mid-Century, all the while provide a fresh new attitude. A distinct sense of place and timelessness is conveyed in the space, activating the ground floor as a place to linger.
The finest of marbles are used throughout the property, from the lobby to the guest bathroom. Fine textiles, warm woods, and contemporary lighting helped DiLeonardo create spaces that are tranquil, modern, and sophisticated. A Mid-Century European revival approach is evident in the typical guestroom design as DiLeonardo’s vision includes custom-designed furniture and furnishings to strike the perfect balance between the past and present to create the most sophisticated and luxurious room. The artwork over the bed integrates a mirror with a panel upholstered by a variety of randomly selected local Sari material stitched together so that it would appear differently in every room. Modern India is a study of contrast and cultural convergence; DiLeonardo used this theme to create a dynamic experience of discovery throughout the hotel, offering a welcome refuge from the hectic energy of India’s fourth-largest city. 99

DESIGNER JOI-Design
LOCATION Frankfurt, Germany
AREA 34,000m2
For the design team, the envelope’s 34,000m 2 size and threedimensionally rounded shape were both a huge challenge and a great opportunity to balance hi-tech vibrancy with low-tech organic forms. Entering at fifth floor level, hotel guests are immediately introduced to the main narrative of the design, the contemplation of apparently juxtaposed ideas: motion vs. rest, speed vs. deceleration, streamlined technology vs. raw nature, airport vs. forest, engulfing traffic vs. an island of calm, stress vs. relaxation, business formality vs. casual comfort, etc.. Two innovative solutions in the public areas celebrate the building’s form and translate the interior spaces into a human scale. The first is a pair of large, sculpturally impressive “golden wings” which extend protectively over the lobby’s reception, lounge and bar, reducing the volume while allowing natural light to filter through from the seven-storey atrium. The second innovation is the “Globe”, a glimmering, organically curved 470m2 and 21ft high “building-within-the-building” that accommodates 106

the ballroom and function spaces. Its construction is a highlight both within and outside the voluminous envelope. In The Fifth, Lounge & Bar, this fusion of apparently incongruous concepts comes alive, with calming symbols of nature from the adjacent forest playing against the fast-paced, machinery-filled bustle of THE SQUAIRE. The curved shape of the structure’s façade means that each hotel floor has a different footprint, resulting in an immense variety of room types amongst the 249 guestrooms and suites. In a building with so many hard surfaces, the designers placed particular emphasis on bringing a tactile and comfortable experience into the bedrooms through such means as leather-clad wardrobes and stylised wingback chairs which curve gently around the guest. The artwork in both the guestrooms and the public areas explores the contrast between motion and stillness. For example, the pictures in the corridor depict elements of nature captured with a dynamic motion blur.

The 19th century building with a striking original neo-classical interior will be re-invented by a contemporary cool sparkle of luminosity and brilliant energy in the quintessential Parisian neighbourhood, infusing light and mutating colour. Historic elements throughout the building such as ornamented columns, vaulted ceilings, mosaic floors, stained glass windows and decorated doors have been preserved and restored to create a dialogue and contrast between the old world and the contemporary elements. An oversized undulating wall of light, “The Spark” is the central design feature that defines the building from the inside and from the street as it defines the central core of the building and weaves through the public spaces, secret corners of DJ booths and martini bars. The illuminated digital design on “The Spark” is a pattern of dots that form abstract pulsing clouds of light.

MINISTRY OF DESIGN
ROCKWELL GROUP EUROPE FIRM
PROJECT ORANGE
HASSELL
Ministry of Design was created by Colin Seah to Question, Disturb & Redefine the spaces, forms & experiences that surround them and give meaning to their world.
The Madrid office of Rockwell Group, Rockwell Group Europe [RGe], is led by Diego Gronda, its Managing and Creative Director. Unique design narratives shape the look, feel and bold concepts of all RGe’s projects. RGe explores new territories with an extraordinary team of artists, architects, and interior, graphic and industrial designers who help create connections between varied disciplines, ideas and cultural landscapes. Building upon the energy and eclecticism of the Rockwell Group’s main office in New York, and Diego Gronda’s extensive work on all five continents, Rockwell Group Europe focuses on designing hotels, restaurants, retail centers, residential and office buildings and spas with a unique and refined aesthetic. RGe’s foremost asset is their capability to design guest experiences in a holistic way. The design strategy begins with landscaping, and is then followed by architecture, interior, graphic and industrial design. This combination of skills enables seamless, synergistic designs that consider the guest experience as well as the operational needs in a well-balanced, harmonious way.
Project Orange is an award-winning architectural and design studio, based in London, set up by Christopher Ash and James Soane. They have produced a broad and original portfolio of work that spans residential, hotel, retail, school and restaurant design. Ideas are generated on a case-by-case basis, resulting in a different “narrative” for each project. The practice seeks to create places that are easily inhabited be they a small café or a public building. Project Orange’s professional and ambitious approach is collaborative and they like to engage with their partners to ensure a lasting and sustainable outcome to all their projects.
HASSELL is an international design practice with 14 studios in Australia, China, South East Asia and the United Kingdom. With more than 900 people and a track record spanning almost 75 years, they work globally across a diverse range of markets.
An integrated spatial-design practice, MOD’s explorations are created amidst a democratic “studio-like” atmosphere and progress seamlessly between form, site, object and space. They love to question where the inherent potential in contemporary design lies, and then to disturb the ways they are created or perceived – redefining the world around us in relevant and innovative ways, project by project! This, they declare, is real change, not change for the sake of novelty.
LEMAYMICHAUD ARCHITECTURE DESIGN
CREATION, INNOVATION, REVITALISATION, FINANCIAL RETURN... These are some aspects of the architectural and design scene that have characterized LEMAYMICHAUD’s work since the firm’s birth in 1979. Its reputation, which transcends national boundaries, is founded on the talent and skills of a team of experienced architects, designers, technologists and consultants working together in close synergy. The architects of complex, innovative projects, LEMAYMICHAUD is known as much for the high quality of its projects as for its interior design. The firm has a strong reputation for meeting challenges, respecting constraints (quality control, cost and time management) and finding the right solution. Its extensive experience also gives the firm the flexibility it requires to successfully mesh its expertise with those of other consultants to optimize the project process. Thanks to its excellent reputation, LEMAYMICHAUD participates in consortiums with other Canadian and foreign firms whenever the opportunity arises.
ILMIODESIGN
ILMIODESIGN is a new creative concept oriented to the design world in all its aspects. Into ILMIODESIGN we face, through a specific methodology, different processes of creation of a project: from architecture to interior design, through industrial and graphic design. Thanks to a great ability to adapt to the project and client needs, ILMIODESIGN aims at obtaining results able to satisfy all phases of the project. From the beginning to the end, ILMIODESIGN puts together the client requirements, with his tastes and desires, and the social and historical context of the project they are realizing. In this way hotel, commercial spaces and private houses originate.

YES ! HOTELS GROUP
YES! Respond their guests when asked whether they have had a fabulous stay in one of our hotels. This makes sense, as they place their guests at the centre of their service philosophy, creating an international environment of luxury and indulgence, all the time accentuating local traditions and authentic culture. As their staff work around the clock to ensure that they exceed rather than meet expectations, “agreeable”, “pleasant” or “enjoyable” services will simply not do. YES! HAPTIC DWP | DESIGN WORLDWIDE PARTNERSHIP
