The Lyrics for Dragon Slayer as imagined by Moses Murray
To be read while listening to Mose play the violin part of the piece “Dragon Slayer” by Rob Grice. The dragon is destroying a city. However, the Dragon Slayer lives there and vows revenge against the dragon. Several weeks later, the Dragon Slayer is training to defeat the dragon. He asks a blacksmith to forge him a weapon to slay a dragon. He is given a sharp sword and starts training with it. Scan this QR code to watch Mose play.
The Dragon Slayer reminds himself of what the dragon did to his family. The Dragon Slayer is very quiet while sneaking into the dragon’s lair. The Dragon Slayer sees the dragon who is asleep. For a second, the Dragon Slayer thinks that the dragon looks cute. The dragon breathes fire in his sleep, and the Slayer remembers he must avenge his family. The Dragon Slayer was planning on killing the dragon in its sleep. But suddenly the dragon wakes up and starts breathing fire at his slayer. He dodges it and sneaks up the back of the dragon and stabs him in the back! The Dragon Slayer was at peace now that he had knocked that of his bucket list.

Tsunami! AHH! RUN! Help, as the people ran. Some got caught. The people felt helpless as the Indian Ocean rocked the land. The tsunami killed hundreds of thousand people. It started with a huge 9.2 earthquake in the Indian Ocean. In the aftermath, people and animals and the land was destroyed. The End
The Los Angeles Lakers by Christian Peters
The Los Angeles Lakers are in 1st place in the Western Conference, in front of the Los Angeles Clippers. In the off-season, the Lakers traded away 2017 first-round pick Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, and Josh Hart for five-time all-star Anthony Davis. The Lakers signed Danny Green and Demarcus Cousins. They fired Luke Walton and hired Frank Vogel. They also signed Dwight Howard and re-signed Rajon Rondo They missed out on Kawhi Leonard and Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, Kemba Walker, Paul George, and Jimmy Butler. The Lakers’ Alex Caruso, Anthony Davis, And LeBron James all might make the All-Star Game in Chicago. Dwight Howard is in the Dunk Contest. The Lakers have made up for last year when they fell way short of the playoffs. The Lakers are a playoff contender and maybe even a championship-caliber team. Maybe they should get Jrue Holiday or Derrick Rose. They really need a guy that can shoot 3 pointers. They should trade Kyle Kuzma, they could get a lot out of him. The End

One Day at the Pool by Ella Grace McLamb
One day, in the middle of the summer, I invited Blair to the pool. When we got to the pool, we immediately went to the waterslide. We went down it and had so much fun! Next, we swam for about an hour. Then we went down the slide again, but at the very bottom, it went BLACK! I felt refreshing water on my face, but could see it. Blair suddenly screamed, but her scream faded. As it faded, I realized I was no longer in the pool, but in a small shallow lake. I heard some weird noises, so I walked through some trees, then I saw Mary writing a pterodactyl! I called her name but she didn’t answer me. I thought it was a good idea to get a closer look. Just then a baby pterodactyl came trotting to me. Its bright turquoise color was not hard to spot along with his dark blue geodes for wings. He let me pet him, so I decided to ride him over to a lake to be safe. Once he was fully trained, I named him Jimmy. Mary and I decided to fight over our dinosaurs. In the middle of the fight, Crosby and Maddie came out of the lake and told us to stop fighting. We flew to the ground, and said goodbye to our dinosaurs. Then we all jumped into the lake and came out of the bottom of the water slide. The end.

War of 1812
by Connor Mooney Let me tell you about a story when I traveled back in time to the War of 1812. When I got there, I felt lucky because my class had just been learning about the war so I was able to tell where I was pretty quickly. In 1812, James Madison was President of the United States. Also, Britain was fighting a war against France, which was currently led by Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. I was able to become the youngest person to be a member of the U.S. Cabinet. As a member of the Cabinet, I helped and convinced President James Madison to wage a war against Great Britain. I came up with this idea because of the British imprisoning sailors from the US Navy, plus, the US needed more land for expansion. Finally, the British were giving Native Americans weapons, so they could fight us. Now I will tell you about the actual fighting that I was involved in. First, some American soldiers burned down the Canadian Parliament. It was a great victory for the United States. In 1813, some Sailors were commanded by Oliver Hazard Perry to defeat British ships on Lake Erie. The attack was successful. Then, I was led by William Henry Harrison to defeat the British at the Battle of the Thames again. The attack was successful. In 1814, America received a huge blow when the British burned down the White House and some other Federal buildings. A few days later Francis Scott Key wrote America’s future national anthem. In December 1814, the Treaty of Ghent ended the war. In January 1815, Andrew Jackson led some troops to defeat the British in the Battle of New Orleans. Both sides fought the Battle without knowing about the Treaty. After the battle, I realized I was thirsty. I saw a Gatorade bottle on the battlefield, and when I drank it, instantly I was back home. The end.

My Dream of the War of 1812 by Joshua Potier
One night, I was sound asleep in my queen bed. I was having the craziest dream of all time. It all started like this. Like I said, I was sound asleep in my bed until the guy named Schomp kidnapped me. I was twisting and turning and seeing all these crazy lines until it all stopped. He dropped me out of the bag and dragged me on the soft and mushy dirt. As he was dragging me, I was seeing all famous places like the White House, but they looked different. It was on fire and it looked like no one was in Washington, D.C. There were some people there though, and they were British Redcoats. That’s when it hit me, I was in the War of 1812!!! I knew a little bit about the War of 1812, but not much. For example, I knew that it was started in 1812 because the British were messing with our trade and imprisoning our sailors. Even though I knew those facts, I did not know if they would help me or not. The guy dragged me a bit longer, then I tripped him and ran away. I ran really, really far away. On my way, I met Andrew Jackson, and the future president told me I would find a time machine in Washington, D.C. So I ran all the way back to D.C., where I found the time machine and went home. That’s the end of the story, as I told my mom. It’s time for school!
The War of 1812 by Madison Angell
It was a stormy afternoon in my house. My dog was frightened, and he curled up to me. My mom was gone for the weekend, and I was by myself. My mom always told me not to go in the basement because they were really special things down there. And one thing was very dangerous. But I was really wanting to see all the cool stuff down there. So I grabbed my dog and went downstairs. The door creaked open, and I saw a dark staircase. I was really scared, but I really wanted to see what was down there. I walked down the stairs and found the light switch. I flipped it on. “That’s the best it is going to get” I thought to myself. I walked forward and saw jewels, diamonds, and gold. But then there was a door. I walked through the door and saw a machine, and I pushed the numbers “1812”, and it sucked me right into it. Then I looked around and realized that I was back in time, to the War of 1812. I thought, “Are you kidding me?” I met an old lady named Jenna and she said, “Do you know anything about the War of 1812?” I said, “No, Ma’am.” So she said, “If you want to leave and go back into your time, you have to know some facts about the War of 1812.” I said “Okay” and the lady told me some amazing facts. Here they are: In the early 1800s, Great Britain was fighting a war against the French. Great Britain was fighting a war against the French. The U.S. was not in this war. Great Britain tried to keep U.S. ships and force them to join the British Navy. It was the second war between the U.S. and Great Britain. The U.S. won independence in the first war, the American Revolution. I said, “Wow! I didn’t know that before!” I said thank you to the lady and she sent me back to my time. When I got back, I ran upstairs and sat on the couch and looked up more facts of the War of 1812. H I E S L OW E R SC H O O L L I T E R A RY M A G A Z I N E

My Historical Dream by Blair Arberg
I was sitting there, and I was really bored, so I went into our garage. Our garage is where my dad does all his work stuff, and he made this big silver thing with a red button. The button looked really cool, so I pressed it and everything went black. When I opened my eyes, I was in Washington DC. I was really confused and when I stood up, I saw the British army burning down the White House. James Madison was the president at the time, and Dolly Madison had managed to save a copy of the Declaration of Independence and a portrait of George Washington! Then I realized I was in the middle of the War of 1812. The Americans were poorly trained, and the British were the top army.
The War of 1812 was about three years long. Francis Scott Key wrote The Star Spangled Banner at the time. Francis was in jail, and when he saw all the bombing he was scared about the flag. When Francis woke up in the morning, the flag was still there. That's how the Star Spangled Banner. I walked around a little bit more and got on a carriage, which took me to New Orleans. There was a battle going on there even though the British and Americans had signed a treaty. The Americans had won the war. Yay! I went over to a tree and sat down. I looked up at a branch, and there was a button. I stood up, reached for the button and pressed it. Everything went black and when I opened my eyes, I was back at my house again.

The Time I Ran Away
My Christmas
by Andrew Altman
by Ingrid Bongers
This is the story of the one time I ran away. The first thing you need to know is where I was. I was in Ashville, North Carolina. Next, you need to know the people that were there. My Grandpa on my mom’s side, my Grandma on my mom’s side, my older sister, and my mom. I was nine years old at the time. I was mad at my grandpa, mom, and sister, but I forgot why.
This Christmas, I went on a cruise to Mexico. On the first day, we surprised my friend that we were coming on the cruise with them. One of the places we stopped at was Costa Maya, Mexico. There I got to snorkel with some huge sea turtles, and wade with the baby sea turtles. The days that we just cruised, I went on the water slides that went off the ship, and I went boogie boarding. The second stop that we stopped at was Cozumel, Mexico. When we were there, I went swimming with dolphins. It was so much fun to interact with them and to be around such nice creatures. That night we had a big New Year’s Eve party on the ship. It was so much fun when it was midnight and all of the balloons came down for the countdown. I had a great trip, and I hope that I can do it again!
Now you need to know what I packed. I packed a toothbrush, but no toothpaste, a blanket, a pillow, $50, my iPad, three changes of clothes, a slingshot, and an extra jacket. I ran all the way down the street which was half a mile. I was gone for about an hour and fifteen minutes, and then I ran back because I was hungry. I will never run away again.

Orlando, Florida by Eidan Berry
I went to Orlando, Florida, with my cousins, parents, and my grandma. We all went to Universal Studios, Magic Kingdom, and the Animal Kingdom. For my birthday, we went to ESPN. There were five bedrooms and four bathrooms in the house where we were staying. At Animal Kingdom, I went on a safari ride and got to see a lot of animals there and learned some facts about them. My mom and my cousin went on a scary roller coaster called the Rip Ride Rocket. For my other cousin’s 5th birthday, we went to the Rainforest Cafe. My bigger cousin didn’t want to go on the Rock and Roll Roller Coaster, but she did since that was my first ride with a loop de loop in it. It was really dark, but I felt it! The only thing I didn’t like about it was how it took off. Later, we went on the 4D virtual Avatar ride. The line was 3 hours long, so we skipped the line using the Fast Pass. It was one of my favorite rides! Back when we first got to Orlando, my mom and I picked up the car, then went to Walmart and spent $300 on food! Last, I went to the house to drop off the food there. My mom and I picked everybody up at 12pm. They had a longer flight than us because they all live in New York. The last day, my dad came to spend a little time with us. He drove us home - everybody left at 4am! I loved Spring Break!

Over the weekend, I went to the farm! At the farm, there were bulls, cows, and the meanest donkey. He will charge you, kick the bulls and cows, and stare you down - you name it! When we rode on the range to feed the animals, every cow and the one donkey crowded my Dad. Then we gave them their food, but they didn’t eat it. We left as fast as possible because we gave them the wrong food. They came sprinting toward us! Even the donkey! I drove across the range, and we found the cows and donkeys some food. The End!
My Bedroom
by Prakhar Saxena Today I’m going to describe my bedroom, which is my favorite room. First of all, my wall color is kind of beige. I have only 2 windows in my room, and they are on my sister’s side. The rest of my walls are blank with no pictures. Next, I’m going to describe my desk in my bedroom. My desk is in between my sister’s side and my side. It has some books on it, sometimes my iPad on it, and some other things. Now I’m going to describe my bed and my closet. The headboard of my bed is not really a headboard. It has shelves where I keep my old stuffed animals. My closet is a walk-in closet and has all my old school stuff and clothes. Across from that I have my bookshelf, which has all the books that I’ve finished and my yearbooks. This is why my bedroom is my favorite room.

BFG
by Jack Deltrap If I got one of the BFG’s “Golden Phizzwizards” dream, this is what it would be like: I was in my bedroom sleeping and then I woke up. I saw a weird ring on my nightstand, so I decided I was going to wear it. As soon as I touched it, I went “Poof!” and was transported to an underwater city. I went exploring around a little, then I found a giant underwater temple. I went in but there were deadly lasers. I hopped around ALL of the lasers, then I found THE MOST PRICELESS JEWEL IN THE WORLD! So I went to go steal it, and it was a success. Then magically a portal appeared in the temple. Then I got transported into my room, and I woke up. That would be my dream!

Science Fiction The Blue Fire
Blue Gel
by Leah Stone & Emmy Courts
by Harley Ward
I was on my way back from school, when I realized I forgot to do my homework for science. So, I screamed at the bus driver, “Wait, I forgot something!”
Hi, I’m Mia and this is the story of how one tub of gel ruined my whole day. One morning, my hair was so frizzy that it looked like I had gone outside and been struck by lightning. Today was not the day for this to happen. It was my mom’s wedding and I was the flower girl! At first, I thought it was weird that a 15-year-old was a flower girl, but I just went along with it because I did not want to ruin my mom’s big day. Anyways, back to the story. I decided to go to the drug store across the street. When I walked in it had outdated wall paper with pictures of George Washington everywhere. I felt like they were watching me, so I went straight to the hair aisle. When I got to the gel section, there was one that just really stood out. It was blue and kind of looked like fire, so I bought it. When I got to the hotel, I put it on and went to go put on my dress. When I got back and looked in the mirror, my hair was rising up. Then I looked at the gel to see what was in it. It had gas in it! I guess the shampoo in my hair had made a chemical reaction. Then I dropped it on my dress. “Mia time to go to the church” said my mom…..
“Well have fun cause I’m not waiting. BYE!” said the bus driver. As I ran in the rain, I saw something catch my eye. It was blue fire - but it moved! I felt like it was trying to tell me something. As I tried to figure it out, it slowly moved closer - until it touched me. Surprisingly, it didn’t burn. The second it touched me, I knew I had to run a test on the fire that didn’t burn. I ran to the school with it flaming in my hand. I got to the classroom, and it jumped out of my hands! It was mad at me for a reason I could not explain. Suddenly the entire classroom had caught fire. It was the biggest chemical reaction I have ever seen. I knew I had made a mistake…
The Return of Dr. Nincompoop
by Graham Goddard & Gavin Campos ‘’Yes! I finally did it!’’ I found the power to make a clone out of fire!’’ I will use these clones to build an unstoppable empire.’’ Dr. Nincompoop just created fire clones. He used his reactants to make fire. His reactants were baking soda, hair jelly beans, Tonguetroleum, and Glassion Dioxide. A few months later… ’I have taken over the galaxy!’’ Aliens from the planet Blah Blah Blah have tried to defeat Dr. Nincompoop and his clones. The aliens threw a ball of fire made out of bones and watch materials. The light was produced by plastic that the two materials formed which formed fire when heated. They threw the fireballs. They destroyed his clones because the clones were not made very well and they couldn’t resist the product of the alien’s materials. It caused a temperature change inside their bodies. A toxic gas was produced which made their insides explode. Dr. Nincompoop survived but is hiding inside his garbage can, which is inside his destroyed weapons factory. The galaxy is free until Dr. Nincompoop is back, which is unlikely to happen. The end.

The Man with the Fire by Layla Riccio
Then something changed… It was a small, yet effective change. The world turned purple. Wait let’s back it up a little… Ace was a normal boy from Michigan. His father was a mad scientist, so he was almost always alone with his mama. His father made lots of chemical reactions. One day his father made an experiment with Ace. Ace was a little nervous, but he thought he could trust his dad. His dad made a fire that was blue, and it stuck to Ace, so that he could activate whenever he wanted to. His father said, “Ace, you can be a bad guy!!!” After his father said, “Muhahahaha!” Ace was terrified that his father was using him. Ace said, “But Dad, I want to use it for good. I never want to be like you, ugh!.” Aces’ father raged with anger. It’s like something new was formed within his father. It was scary. “You have been warned, Ace” As he said that, Ace was terrified and felt sad. He thought to himself “wait, I’m 12. I shouldn’t be afraid.” Ace started practicing with his powers. He felt like a Greek god, but with fire hands. He started posting Tik-Toks with his powers, but no one believed him. So, he did what his father told him to do. As all of the gas was produced off of his fire hands, he started doing evil. When he was doing evil, he didn’t know why. It’s like he had become his dad now. He did something terrible. All of sudden, the temperature changed, and he had turned the world purple. As he did that, he realized he had become the world’s greatest villain.

Lazy Jelly
by Katie Kessell & Hannah Johnson Hmm, I’m hangry. “Josh! Make me a sandwich now!!!!” I yell at him while he does my laundry.
After, an hour of discussing, I agree. I grab the organic strawberries, the thickener, the sugar, and the strainer. “Ready!” I say sarcastically.
“No, you do it yourself, lazy butt!” he yells at me. I finally get up from the smooth, light aqua green couch. I grab my sparkly yellow hoverboard. I ride until I get to the stairs. From there, I get into my Barbie pink laundry basket. I hop in, push myself down the hardwood stairs, yelling, “ahhhhhhh, weeeeeeeeee,” as I go bump, bump, bump.
I grab my phone and start playing My Little Pony songs. “My little pony, my little pony…” “How do you make jelly?” I ask confused. “Figure it out on your own, I’m going to my friend’s house, I-I mean work,” he says as he runs out of the room.
“Owww” I yell.
“Ok, I can do this.” I think to myself.
“WHAT’S YOUR PROBLEM NOW?!!” asks Josh.
I grab the strawberries and the knife. I carefully cut the washed strawberries. I put the pot on the stove and heat it up to medium. I put the strawberries in the pot, and I wait, watching the strawberries melt, because of the temperature change. After 15 minutes, it starts making gas bubbles. I start to pour in the thickener. I mix it as the reactants mix together and create a new product. I pour in the smooth sugar. I start to mix it as fast as I can for 2 minutes. After it starts to thicken, I put it in a clear glass jar. I put it in the freezer for 2 hours.
After a super fun ride down the stairs, I reach the bottom. The floors are now filled with my dirty, smelly, hot pink, Jojo Siwa blanket. I run to the kitchen, tripping over a chair. “Nooooo,” I yell in slow-mo. I hear foots steps. “Why are you on the ground!?” asks Josh. I ignore him, as I go to get the jelly. I find that there is no more jelly left!
“I’m home!” announces Josh as he walks into the kitchen. “Hey! I finished making the jelly!” I say excitedly.
“WHERE’S THE JELLY!!” I shout. “Umm, I ate it, but you can make some,” he says, as if I were a 12 year old still. “Umm, I’m not little anymore! I’m 13!” I say, starting to feel my face get strawberry red, like my favorite jelly.
24
I start sprinting towards Josh, when all of a sudden, I trip. “You’re kidding me!! My new shirt!” shouts Josh, now covered in jelly. Dun, Dun, Dun!
Into Fire
by McVey Peden BAM! “Oh, sorry I was just testing my new reactants that I found on my trip to Peru: the bamboo leaf and the titanium cactus, a species just found two weeks ago. Now, to introduce myself... I am Bill Tarpon, the world’s best scientific explorer. The “BAM!” you just heard was me melting the bamboo leaf and freezing the titanium and submerging them both in water to make a brand new artificial light other than fire or electricity.” But what he didn’t know was that he’d found more than light! “It worked!” he said relieved. “Now to test it out!” So, he dropped a piece of paper into the product. But he didn’t see any indicators of a chemical reaction, and the paper didn’t dissolve either. It didn’t have any indicators, so he slowly reached his hand towards it, and everything turned black once he touched it. When he opened his eyes, he saw clouds that looked like cotton candy fresh off the stick. “What is this!” he exclaimed. He looked down and there he was - floating in air! Or whatever he was doing! “Now, how do I get out?”, he mumbled under his breath. So, he flew over to something that actually looked solid. As he went closer and closer, all of a sudden he saw someone he recognized… “Albert Einstein!?!?”

by Ryder Ripps and Charlie Barton It was a normal day, until something really weird happened. We were all trying to make the fire for the camp out tonight. This guy in our cabin was never happy. His name was Patricia. Everyone made fun of him because his name sounded like a dorky girl name. As we were building the campfire, Patricia got hit by a flame! It looked like he was fine, until we realized there was something that looked like a blue flame in his hand. Since he hated me the most because I would always make fun of his name, he threw the little blue fireball at me. It was freezing cold - there must have been a temperature change in the fire when it hit him. It must have been a chemical reaction. I thought it was odd because there was no indicator that caused it, so how could it have happened? Something new must have formed in his body, but I don’t know what it was. That is for you to find out!
Don’t Play with Fire
by Scarlett Payne & Camilla Tuman I didn’t know what was happening, but I knew it was bad. I had never felt like this before. I didn’t know why the man was mad at me, I didn’t do anything to deserve this. At least I didn’t think. Hold on, let me backup… I was out for a jog, minding my own business, when I got the feeling someone was following me. I tried to get over myself and continue, but I just couldn’t let it go. My jog turned into a sprint, but it wasn’t enough. Next thing I knew, everything went pitch black. When I woke up, I didn’t feel like myself. It felt like a chemical reaction had occurred inside of me. Little did I know, that was literally what had happened. I panicked, then looked at my feet, but they weren’t there. They were replaced by blue, flickering, flames. He had turned me into fire. I am recording this because I just saw something very peculiar. A letter that had fallen to the floor. It stated, “Dear Emily, I regret to inform you that you will be the product of a terrible experiment. See, in this test you are a critical reactant. I cannot tell you much more for your own safety. All I can say is that you must leave now!” P.S: And Don’t Play with Fire -Anonymous I had just now discovered this letter, but I had been in this state for years. Someone must have hidden it from me…

The Mentone Chronicles My Mentone Experience by Alexa Henningsen
Imagine this, you are at Nature’s Classroom in Mentone, AL. You have been in a comfy bus with your 5th grade classmates for what feels like 3 hours. Finally, you arrive, you step out of the bus and you feel a cool chill go down your body. Then, you figure out what cabin you are in. You grab your bag and find your bunk. After that, you find out your field group. Then, you will go on a hike with your field group. That was my experience arriving at Nature’s Classroom. On my first hike, I could hear all the birds chirping and the crackling sound of our field group’s footsteps in the leaves. Then, we went down a steep, rocky hill and made a sharp left turn. As we were hiking, we all smelled something gross. It smelled like poop! Ewwwwwwwww! Then our field group leader finally told us what the smell was. The smell was only a plant that grows near the water. This is a trip I will never forget. Blair, Avery, Ella, Paige, and I all playing keep away with a soccer ball against the boys and beating them so badly. Another one is going through Split Rock. Split Rock is a rock that you can go through and get pulled up by your field group leader. When you go through it, it is tighter than a pair of too small jeans. When you get through the tight part you’ve got to step on a rock and pull yourself into a little part in the rock that has space in it. Then you look for your field group leader’s foot and climb to it. Then, you turn on your back and your group leader will pull you up. When you are in there, the rocks are like sandpaper with pointy edges that stick out. It felt like a refrigerator; it is cool but not too cool. Also, I loved being with my friends and getting to know them even better. I also loved meeting new people and getting to know them better too. I was so happy to get to know new friends and old friends. Here are some things that I learned at Mentone. I learned about ORT, which stands for “organic recyclable trash.” It is when you eat everything on your plate and drink everything in your cup. Also, if our whole grade was Ort-less, we would get a plate on the ceiling. But unfortunately, we didn’t get one. Also, I learned that bamboo is a type of grass. Another is that there are more than one kind of lichen. One of my favorite parts was the Invention Convention. It was where you made an “invention” to help the world. Then, you would make a presentation on what you made. After that, the ‘judges’ would judge you. After everyone goes, they select a winner. Unfortunately, we didn’t win. Another one of my favorites was “Everyone Is It.” It’s a game and you have some balls and there is a grid. If you get hit by one of the balls, you sit down. But if the person who hit you with the ball gets hit, you’re back in and they are out. Another favorite part was Rec Time. Rec time is where you can just play for what felt like 30 to 45 minutes. During that time my friends and I would play soccer, basketball and volleyball. In the gym when you took off your shoes, the court would stick like gum to your socks. It felt weird! Although this was one of my favorite school trips, here are some things that could have been better. One of them is the counselors. The counselors could have been a little bit nicer and engaging when we did things like the ropes course and Split Rock. Another one was the cabins. The hairy, moldy showers were disgusting. Also, the heaters in the cabin were literally real fire, and this is really dangerous. The cabin could have caught on fire because of the temperature of the fire. There is just one more thing. The classes. Also, the classes weren’t that fun and there were only like 3 to 4 classes and sometimes you wouldn’t get the one that you wanted because it was already full. Now we are leaving Mentone. Bye Mentone!!!

The Amazing Ropes Course by Andrew Chang
I moved very slowly through the log that was attached to the tree like a snail crawling on someone’s arm, trying not to slip off. I then beamed at the next odd structure. It took me a minute to recognize what it was, since my brain wasn’t really in my head that second. Then, WOOOOOOOSSSSHHHH! My brain flew back into my head, waking up my memories like, “Hey, wake up! You’re late for school!”. I was staring upon a Burma Bridge! It looked very odd, but very familiar. “This is the Burma Bridge! This should be easy to cross!” I thought. But I was wrong. When I crossed the bridge, I still had that chill in my spine, which got worse because it got slower, and I still moved like a snail, but a trillion times slower, which gave me a big shiver in my spine. The bridge started swaying, and my eyes were wide open as if I was in bed, trying to sleep but I couldn’t. I looked down, and I saw it was a long distance from the ground to my level. When you’re on the ground, it looks like it isn’t a long way up there. But if you look from the top however, you were like a tall man looking down from 49 feet above. Still, I made it through without falling. Then, I stumbled upon the “final battle” of the course. The V Swing. It looked so confusing. I simply got on, sat down, held the handles, and leaped! I squeezed my eyes closed and hoped for the best that it wouldn’t break, and I would fly off into the distance. Then, the G-Force came rushing through my body, as if it was a peregrine falcon, rushing away from an incoming storm. Finally, I felt something through my back that destroyed my chill. It was the wind. I didn’t fly off, it didn’t break, I was alive. I opened my eyes and saw a man slowing me down. My eyes were wider than it ever has been. “I said: “Wow, that was fun!”. Now, I understood why it was called “The V Swing”. Finally, I had finished the course, with a bright, happy smile on my face. I did it. Everybody loved it, and we all had that same “I want to do it again” smile. We walked back to camp for dinner. There was no way I would forget that.

Caroline’s Trip to Mentone by Caroline Davis
“Screech!” went the bus as we made a sharp turn into the Mentone camp entrance. My first glance: two tiny cabins. How will we fit? OH NO! “Good Morning!” I said to my roommates: Avery, Alexa, and Blair. “Hi, guys. Oh, hi Madame Dickey.” “Ummm… Is this anyone’s towel?” “Yes, that’s mine,” Avery replied. “Oh, I found it on the heater last night,” “It’s burnt.” “How?” Avery asked, “Tell Us!” We all yelled politely. “Ok,” Madame Dickey replied. “So, last night I started smelling smoke. I wasn’t sure where it was coming from. So, I looked around. Then I saw it… the towel on the heater. I peeled it off so the cabin did not burn down. I took a look at it and saw that the yellow towel had turned brown.” “Lichen; there are three types of it,” Konica said. “What are they?” I asked, “Fruticose, Foliose, and Crustose. They can all grow on trees and rocks.” Konica replied, “Oh, I thought that Fruticose was moss.” I said, “Well, now you know it’s not.” “So, let’s move on to learning how to identify trees.” Konica said, “You can identify most trees by the crevasses in their bark, but some can be identified by the shapes of their leaves and the things they produce.” You go to the egg drop shop to buy items to protect your egg when you drop it. “You have $10 to spend at the shop.” Konica said, “So, let’s get started.” “Caroline, do you want to be my partner?” Emma asked, “Of course!” I shouted in excitement. We picked from materials such as egg cartons, plastic bags, coffee filters, paper cups, and tape, just to name a few. “DONE!” We shouted. “Ok, now since everyone is done, let’s start dropping.” Everyone before us cracked their egg. Emma and I went next. We walked up the stairs and dropped our egg. “TAP!” Emma and I quickly got down the stairs. Then, we opened our creation and saw a crack-free egg. “Yay!” Emma said. “Mmmmm,” “That lunch was delicious.” I said, “What’s for dessert?” “Oreo Yum Yum,” Konica replied. “Ok, sounds good,” “Can I go get some?” I asked. “Sure,” Konica replied. So I went to get the “Oreo Yum Yum.” It was a giant brown blob with Oreo chunks in it. “Ewwwww. This looks awful.” I said, but I tried it anyway. It was the most disgusting thing I have ever tasted. 2 hours later, I didn’t feel so good. “Why don’t I take you to the cabin?” Ms. Kent said. “Ok, thank you.” We went back to the cabin and I eventually felt better. “Screech!” I heard as we left Mentone. I said goodbye to Mentone and the two tiny cabins that we did not stay in.
A Girl in the Sun by Harper Preston 34
My Mentone Experience by Ellie Critz Harrison “Bump… Bump…Bump” went the bus as the fifth grade approached the beautiful fields and mountains of Mentone, Alabama. As we went slowly up a hill, drove through a road, and under some trees, a feeling of excitement rushed up my spine. I was not only excited, but a little nervous too. I had never slept away from home for more than a night. After that we were finally there! The whole fifth grade was going on a two-night trip to Mentone, Alabama! When the bus stopped, we all ran excitedly outside to put our heavy bags and luggage down by a small cabin. Brrrr! It was much colder than I expected, I thought as I put my coat on. We followed someone that worked there into a long green field, and soon learned what cabins we were in. As she called out the list of people in the second girls’ cabin, I was only thinking about one thing. I wanted my friends to be in my cabin with me. I listened, and listened, then finally YES! I was overjoyed to learn that I was in the same cabin as some of my best friends. As we walked across the long, green field to our cabins, I talked with my friends about how we were so lucky that we were all in the same cabin, and how we wanted to sleep together. When I saw my cabin I was so surprised. It had a colorful piano, and a sitting area where we all liked sitting and talking together. The best part was that it had an upstairs! As soon as we were able to pick our beds, my friends and I rushed upstairs, and picked our beds. We shared a small, cozy room with a big window that overlooked the area behind the cabin, and with creepy shaking beds. Before I knew it, it was nighttime, and we had planned to stay up really late together. We told creepy stories through most of the night, did shadow puppets, and just talked together. As we went on, we felt really tired and wanted to go to bed. We said good night and went to sleep. Well, we almost went to sleep. I could not fall asleep no matter how hard I tried. At one point, I heard this strange noise that sounded like water falling in a cup. Drip, Drip, Drip. It was surprisingly very relaxing, and soon I was asleep; dreaming of the fun day ahead. In the morning, we had a delicious breakfast, then went on a hike. As we started walking, I found I loved taking pictures of the beautiful scenery. I would take pictures of everything, and I would always show them to my friends. By the end of the hike, I had a whole collection of pretty photos. I loved looking at my pictures, and loved taking them just as much. On one of our hikes, we went through a dark rock shelter called Hook’s Hideaway. At first I was scared and thought about not going through, but as I slowly crawled through the dark, pitch-black rock shelter, I felt more and more confident, and finally, I reached the end! I was so proud of facing my fears, but I know I could not have done it without the support of my awesome friends. After the hike, we had time to refill our water bottles, use the restroom, and prepare for our next activity. After I had prepared, I played volleyball with my friends. It was so fun. I would hit the ball over the net with my team. It was amazing. My next activity was called Back Country Baking, and I was really excited. When it was time to start, I learned that we were making cinnamon rolls! As we rolled out the dough, I could smell the strong smell of cinnamon. Yum. It smelled so good. Finally, after pouring a lot of different ingredients in a bowl, it was time to bake it. We made a fire with small twigs, but the cold wind kept blowing it out. We tried and tried again, but we only got it to bake a little. We decided to eat them, and they tasted amazing! Even though they were not fully cooked, they still tasted really good. Our trip was really fun, and we learned really cool things, too! On one of our hikes, we learned about different types of plants. My favorite plant is Muscadine. The small green leaves taste like a peel of a green apple! It was so cool. I also learned about different types of rocks such as sedimentary and sandstone. Rocks are very interesting, and we even got to crawl through a few rock shelters. A rock shelter is like a cave, but with only one opening. I am so happy that I learned about nature and lots more on this trip. Overall the worst part of the trip had to be leaving. That morning, I packed my bags and checked my room with my friends to make sure I did not leave anything, then took my stuff outside to be packed into the bus. I had breakfast, then went to my cabin to clean it. We all swept with brooms, dumped the trash cans, and sat on our beds, waiting for someone to check our cabin and make sure it was clean. After it was checked, we took a big picture together in front of our cabin. Then we got into the bus, and drove off; through the green trees, drove through a road, and down a small hill. Bump…Bump...Bump.

The Crazy Adventures in Mentone by Harrison Baughman
Something that I will never forget was when we entered the dark, wet, rock shelter. It was like entering a spider’s den. I was shivering with fear until I saw the bright sun and the exit. I also won’t ever forget my very joyful and funny group leader, Jordan. Thursday Night Live was another favorite thing that I will never forget because of all of the fun and the skits that people played. I liked that we got to meet and discuss the skits. The campfire is also unforgettable because of all the warmth from all of the cold. We were shivering so much that I thought my hands were gonna fall off. The last thing I won’t forget was when we got a treat after several days without eating one. My favorite part about Mentone was when we built a big, strong Burma Bridge. I loved that there were a lot of steps to it. I liked that the Burma Bridge was about learning knots. It felt like I was trying to memorize a very complicated potion in Harry Potter, but the teamwork was hard because of the cold weather making me shiver.
Sweet Stack by Talia Russell
I learned a lot, but the thing that I learned the most about was how to survive in the wilderness. In that class we pretended that a storm was coming, and we had to set up camp. There was so much pressure that it was like a football game was going on and it was 49 to 49 in the last second. It felt very real when we did that. Have you ever had a stench in your room? Well when we made soap, some soap bars did give a stench. Other than the stench, making soap bars was cool, but not as good as the other activities. Another thing that wasn’t so great were the cabins that we stayed in. They were pretty small, and there was a bunch of graffiti on the walls and everywhere. For example, someone had written something on my bed mattress that said, “I AM JUDI THE KILLER AND I WILL COME TO YOUR HOUSE AND KILL YOU! ! ! ! ! !” So those two things are the only thing that were wrong. After all the fun, I rated this trip 5 stars. But then when I walked onto the bus, sadly and slowly, the fun of Mentone faded away from me.

My 5th Grade Trip to Mentone by Jack Underwood “VROOOOOOOOOOOOM!” the bus pulls up. Shaking with fear, I go step by step into the massive vessel. “SCREEEEEEECH!” the doors close behind me as I sit down. Something I will never forget about Mentone is that the air was always so fresh. You could see the stars and listen to everyone laugh as they danced around with joy. We went on hikes and saw beautiful scenes that narrowed through the caves. We dropped eggs down heights and mostly watch them splatter. Then, we would eat amazing meals cooked with expertise. We would tell spooky stories that scared me. At the end of the day, we would all gather and watch the fire blaze with flames. One day, we went to Split Rock. The caves were pitch black as can be, and the walls were as narrow as a frisbee. You had to crouch as if you were in a cannon to get out to see the sun once more. We also went to another cave called Hook’s Hideaway. It was very dark. When I was coming out, I hit my teeth on a rock, and it really hurt. The person on the other side of the cave said, “Say cheese!” and took my picture. Then they posted it on Instagram. We saw a stonefly - it really blended in with the rock. Before we got there, everyone was expecting nice cabins! But when we got there, there were wooden cabins where they hadn’t even bothered to paint the walls! They were barely heated, and the beds were not even an inch thick! There was this guck called Oreo Yum Yum. It wasn’t that yummy to me. It looked disgusting and didn’t taste too good! The apple pie and cookies were good though. There was this really small fire, and honestly, it did not keep us that warm at all. In the end, I had a great time at Mentone. I would give this trip a 3 out of 5 stars. It was pretty good but had a couple of flaws. For example, we were not being able to have ice in our water. The “V-Swing” was fun though, as was the ropes course. So, this was my trip to Mentone, Alabama!

The Awesome Adventures In Mentone by Maddie McDonald
As the bus stopped with a screech, the fifth grade had arrived at their destination: Mentone, Alabama. The area was Riverview Girls’ Sleepover Camp, but boys and girls from fifth grade stayed there. My cabin at Mentone was Arapaho. The teachers in our cabin were Ms. Broe, Mrs. Kent, and Madame Dickey. When the 5th grade got to Mentone, half of us took a hike. The other half had a class first. The hike was so tiring and long - it made me feel like my feet had bricks on them. My group was called the Armadillos. My field group leader’s name was Erin. Our group included Avery Grace, Claire Cummings, Sophia Toledo, Sienna Shortt, Bryce Smith, Andrew Chang, Davis Carlisle, Jack Wardner, Camilla Tuman, and Gavin Campos. It was an amazing group because I had a lot of friends in the group. That night we had a thing called the Invention Convention where we had to make an invention for a world problem and present it. I was a salesperson, so I told what the invention was. My group’s invention was “The Deplastinator.” My group’s salespeople had a song which was “Deplastinator’s On Your Side.” The salespeople had a catchphrase which was “We’re optimistic!” My group won the Invention Convention. The next day we had a class, and mine was called Eggdrop. It was where we dropped eggs with protection on it from the top floor of the gym and saw if the egg cracked. Ryder Ripps and I were partners. We were so close to winning because our egg barely cracked, but Grayson and Claire won. That night we had Thursday Night Live. My group’s act was about going to the doctor’s office. My sickness was that I couldn’t stop making weird noises. As my field group leader pushed me onto the stage, it went dead silent. It was so quiet I could hear a pin drop. I was nervous and scared, but then I started my act. It was really funny at the end when Sienna was pregnant because the joke was that Andrew would catch every sickness the person had and he didn’t want to be pregnant. Overall the worst part of the trip was leaving. This was one of my favorite field trips because it was really good bonding time with my friends. As I got on the bus, I had a feeling that I would miss being in Mentone. That feeling went away because I started wanting to go home. That night I was happy to be home, but also I missed being away from home. I will never forget this trip.

Short Stories The Funny Joke
by Alexa Henningsen I don’t know why but today I got up early so I decided to go to school early and do my homework. When I got there, I had a problem with my math, so I opened the door to the teacher’s room to find Mr. Barnaby. I opened the door and was surprised to see they were all aliens! I slammed the door and ran to my bike and biked home. I told my Mom and Dad, but they didn’t believe me. They said you’re just imagining things, now go back to school or you’ll be late. So, I went back to school and I was late. I saw Mr. Barnaby and he wasn’t an alien. “Maybe Mom was right!” I thought. So, when the day was over, I saw Mr. Barnaby again and he was an alien. I rubbed my eyes and looked again - he was still an alien! So, I took a picture. Then that night I set up a trap. The next day I woke up early and went to school. I’d caught an alien! But it was a joke to scare me, and apparently my mom and dad were right. So, I deleted the picture and went home and told my parents. I told them about it, and we laughed. They knew it was all a joke and didn’t tell me. But it was still funny. THE END
My Birthday
by Annabelle Marshall It’s my birthday! I can’t believe Dad is letting me have a slumber party. We are going to play on the trampoline, make cookies, and watch a movie! I am having Sophia, Grayson, Mary, Caroline, and then my friend Terry. Actually, she is not my friend. My mom invited her because she likes her, but not me! She’s always so mean to me. Once everyone got to my house, we played around, but then everyone wanted to do arm wrestling. Sophia and I were up. She was winning at first, but then I used all of my might. Then she twisted my arm. I fell straight on the ground. I tried to stand up, but Terry pushed me down again. She was laughing so hard at me. She made me want to push her down, too! But, I didn’t. I just sat there until Mom and Dad came and helped me up. They asked what happened, and everyone said it was Terry. Her face got so red and hot. My mom took her into the house, and then she got sent home. After she was gone, we had a blast!

I was at the doctor today and I saw a pill. The doctor was not in the room right now, so I threw it in the air and gulped it. The doctor came back in and said to leave for home. For some reason, I felt bigger. When I got home, everything looked smaller, so I went to go check my height. I was 5’10”! I ran straight to the hospital and into the E.R. I told them I grew a foot in ten minutes. They said it was not possible and to please leave. Now I’m 8’10”!! I remembered all of this started happening when I took the pill. I ran straight, and I mean straight, back to the doctor’s office. When I got there, I check my weight and I weighed 900 pounds!!! I ran to the office and said to the doctor, “I ate a pill this morning and started to become giant!” She said, “Oh, you ate my pill!!” She grabbed me and put me in a room. Luckily, there was a phone. So I called the police and they arrested her and let me out. Sadly, I was a giant for the rest of my life.

The Community Upgrader by Camilla Tuman
This short story is based on the following writing contest prompt: A feeling of excitement washed over me as I prepared to open the enormous box. At first glance, the box seemed ordinary, the words “Handle with care” carefully stamped in bold black letters on the side. The tape was dry and cracked, tearing away easily as I pried back the lid. What I saw inside the box made me jump up with excitement, and I knew it was just what my community needed. My community was a community of non-communicators. We interacted, but only through social media. Why talk to someone in person when you could talk to someone on Snapchat or through text messages? So much less effort. But really, nothing can compare to actually talking to someone. Talking to a person is something that no app can re-create. In reality, social media isn’t very social. Even if I were in the same room as my friend, we wouldn’t talk, we would just text, text, and text. The same thing would happen at a restaurant or at a movie, you couldn’t see what was happening because of how much blue light was polluting the screen. You never realize how much people whisper during a movie until they start texting instead. If something were to happen to my beloved phone, it would be devastating. That is why what was in the box was so infuriating to me. At first this was exactly what we had needed. The object inside the box was a device that would give social media a whole new meaning. At least, that was what the label said. If this object was in the homes of every house in the community, it would be “life-changing.” Before switching it on, I texted (surprise, surprise) my friend Maya. “I got it!” my thumbs flew across the keyboard. “You mean the community upgrader?” was her response. “Yeah, I’m going to turn it on now. Bye.” My house had been the only house without the community upgrader. Everyone else had theirs turned on. Once I flipped that switch, our lives would be changed. The community upgrader was HUGE. It was smooth, black, and pill-shaped. The only thing that was on it was a small switch. And once you flipped it, there was no going back. Not even if you destroyed the thing. Once you did what had to be done, the switch was useless. It would only work if everyone had it turned on. They were all waiting for me up until this point. “Not anymore,” I said through gritted teeth. Before I could give it a second thought, I flipped the switch. I pulled out my phone to see what the community upgrader had done. I logged in and pressed messages, and a notice came up on the screen: ACCESS DENIED. I clicked home and tried again: ACCESS DENIED. Then I looked at the community upgrader. It was pulsing. Yellow lights flowed down the sides. They almost looked like veins. “Mom! Come here! Something’s happening to my phone!” My mother rushed over from the kitchen. Then she saw the community upgrader. “Oh, good, it came. Did you flip it on, Emma?” “Yeah, and my phone’s not working!” My mom smiled. “Honey, of course it’s not working. It’s taking a little time to sync.” “No, Mom, look!” I turned my phone around to show her. A little frown spread across her face. “Oh, well, why don’t you go outside to play? Buying you that phone was a mistake anyway.” She led me to the doorway and gave me a little push outside. Then she shut the door. Outside was a dangerous place. What was I supposed to do? Run around kicking a ball? But other kids were outside, too. I found Maya among the crowd of puzzled children. “What do you think happened? You know with the community upgrader?” She asked. “I don’t know. I flipped the switch and then my phone wouldn’t let me do anything.” We stood like that for a little while, watching more kids be added to the mass, and soon I got bored. I walked up to a tree stump and stood on it so that I was taller than all of the other kids. “Hey! Listen up! I’m guessing that your mothers did the same thing to you as my mom did to me. She said that I should play. Do any of

you know any games?” A small boy raised his hand. I recognized him as Tommy Jacobs. “I used to play soccer. I could teach you guys soccer.” I liked that idea. I could tell that lots of other kids liked that idea, too, so I made the decision for all of us. “Teach us soccer,” I said, trying to sound as important as possible. And he did. And I was very good. Every day I would go out to play soccer or basketball or just to talk. Soon I had forgotten my phone. You couldn’t play two truths and a lie on your phone, or charades, or even capture the flag, the game that I was playing right now. This really changed my perspective on the community we all shared. I was crouching behind a bush with Maya. “Maya, look! The flag is right there!” I pointed to the tree stump where I had stood weeks earlier and made my speech. “But we’ll have to get through the guard first,” she whispered. The other team had been smart. They had chosen the scariest, most buff, smartest boy to be the guard. “I bet he would fall for the divide and conquer method,” I said. She nodded. I snuck behind the guard and Maya jumped in front of him. “Hola!” she said. She was distracting him very well. While he was trying to tag her, I grabbed the flag and started running. By the time he realized what was going on, it was too late. I was on the other side. We had won! Maya and I high fived and shook hands with the other team. It was getting dark out, so I headed back home. I kicked off my muddy sneakers, climbed the stairs, and flopped onto my bed. I noticed that my play clothes were still on, but I didn’t care. What I didn’t notice was that the community upgrader had stopped pulsing and that my phone blinked back to life. And when I did, I didn’t care. THE END

The Flowers
by Caroline Birdsey Hello, my name is Sarah and I’m going to tell you about a story about how I got these random rashes. Or so I thought they were. It was my first day of school. It was time for recess, and I started playing with some new friends in the bushes. Then, it happened. I started breaking out in red painful rashes. I started screaming and eventually, an adult found me crying pain. They took one look at my rash and sent me straight to the nurse. But that did nothing. She just called 9-1-1, afraid that it might begin to spread among the other people. They called my parents, too. The first time I saw them, I was in the hospital bed. But by the time the doctor came into the room, the rashes were gone. My doctor didn’t believe my parents when they told him about the rashes. So, later they took me home. A few weeks later, I went to a new school. I found my locker and finished all my classes. Then, it was recess. I thought it wouldn’t be a problem since it was a new school. Boy, was I wrong! It happened again, and it was more red and painful than the last time. The nurse found me and called my parents. When they got there, they took me home. My dad didn’t want it to happen again, so he decided to do some research about the schools. He found out that the schools I’d been to have some flowers called Circle Purples on their playgrounds. It turns out that I am very, very allergic and could even die from it. So, I moved to the other side of the world. I am very lucky to still be alive. Thank you for listening to my story. The End.
The Lantern by Lane Rodts
I grabbed my lantern and stepped down the stone path. I went deeper and deeper into the woods. My feet were aching from the uneven ground. I felt the moisture go between the cracks of my toes. It reminded me of my favorite song. I danced around as my rough hair hit my silky white dress. I found myself in a pleasant place. I turned on my lantern. Fireflies started appearing, and I slowly watched as it got darker and darker. Soon it was pitch black, but I didn’t stop dancing around and around in the tall grass that surrounded me. The moon shone brightly, and finally the moonbeams shone on me. I put the lantern in the grass. I put my head on a tree and dozed off. I awakened to the voice of Papa. He grabbed my hand and led me home. I told him about the fireflies, the tall grass, and the moon that kept me company all night long.

The Dragon, the Bear, and the Tiger By Carson Lane Once there was a dragon who lived in a forest. And he needed a friend. He was lonely. He needed a dragon friend. So he looked and looked and looked until he found a lonely tiger. He thought and said, “I can have a tiger friend.” He said, “Hey Tiger, do you want to come to my home?” “Sure!” said the tiger. “Come get a snack!” said the dragon. “Tag! You’re it! Come get me! Do you want to play freeze tag?” “Sure,” said the tiger, “but we don’t have enough animals!” So they looked and looked and looked until they found a bear. So then they played freeze tag with the bear. The bear said, “Do you want some honey?” “Sure!” they said. The End.

The Story of the 4 Pups
by Riley Dorsey, Sophie McKay, Finley Metzner Lucy, Max, Stanley, and Biscuit are all family. They live in an abandoned shed. “Max, can you go and get some food for us?” Lucy asks. “Sure, I remember I hid a bone when I was little!” says Max. The dogs were always lonely. Just one more dog would do the trick! “Wait” Stanley called. “I need to come with you!” “OK!” Max said. “Bye, bye!” Biscuit and Lucy called. “So can we get a turkey, chase a squirrel, or get a nut?” said Stanley. “Stanley, we’re just getting a bone!! But fine, here’s the spot!” Max said.
Golden Retriever by Isabelle Peters
“Hey, watch your digging! You’re hitting me with the dirt!” Stanley said. “Here it is!” Max said. “What was that?” he asks. Meanwhile back at the shed, Biscuit and Lucy were playing tag. “Gotcha!” said Biscuit. Soon they were fast asleep. Stanley and Max didn’t know what was going on. “Just be cool!” Max said. “I’ll peek over!” said Stanley. “What is it?” Max asked. “Another dog!!!” Stanley screamed. “Hey, don’t crack my shades with your screaming!” Max said. Stanley said, “Wait, it’s a Golden Retriever! Can he come with us? Please, Max??” “Yes!” said Max. Then they brought him home. His name was Tyson. “Can I stay here with you all?” asked Tyson. Lucy said, “Sure, we’d love that! Now can we have that bone?” “YES!!” they all said. The end.

Broadway Gone Weird
by Sophia Artigue & Ellie Critz Harrison Mathew was always told that the main thing to do in New York was to see something on Broadway, so there he was, sitting in the front row of the theater. His mom had bought tickets for “Mindful Manor” two years ago! It was supposed to be a horror musical, but little did the two know that the fine print said otherwise. As Mathew watched the curtains, he had a vision of hair-raising, spinechilling, horrendous manor. As the “scary” performance passed by, Mathew was so confused! “Why are there dancing lollipops in a palace of sweets?” he whispered to his mom. “I have no idea!” she whispered back. Time passed quickly. So quickly, that all Mathew heard were cringy songs of happiness.
Hades’ World
by Sophia Meszaros One foggy night on the Isle of the Lost, Hades was pacing through his lair thinking about how to escape the Isle. Then he heard a knock on the door. He was not scared, nor frightened, for it was just Celia. Celia is Hades’ grocer. “What do you want?” Haiti said. “I noticed you were out of canned corn,” Celia said, while tossing Hades three cans of corn. Hades caught them and stocked the cans on the table just as Celia left. He started pacing again. Thinking out loud he said, “I used to be God!” Suddenly Hades heard footsteps in the shadows. They got closer and closer and closer. He thought it was just Celia, but he was wrong. The noise got closer and closer until it said “No, I was the god.” Out stepped a beautiful girl. “Who are you?” “I am Haley. Your sister.” “What?” Haiti said. “I used to be powerful, but when you came along, Mom and Dad left me to die, yet I survived. Now I am here to help you take control!” Haley said, “Now, show me your feared face.” “I was a dog, I was a god.” as his Mohawk lit up like fire. “Watch and learn.” Haley said, “I was the god!” Haley said as her hair lit up like the blue flames on a candle. “You have so much to learn.” The end.

Card Wars
by Ryan Lane & William Tabler “Hey”, I said to Steve over the telephone. “Mind coming over?” “A guy down the street is having a garage sale.” “Sure!” Steve said, “I’ll be there in ten minutes.”
We sat in the chairs and watched the baseball game that was on TV. “Beckett, do you know what position Mickey Mantle played?” Steve asked.
When Steve got to my house, we set off for the garage sale. When we got there the owner welcomed us warmly. “Howdy! The name’s Fred! He said in a western drawl, “See anything you like and just call my name.”
“He played centerfield and first base. His batting average was .353.” I replied.
“He’s oblivious of what he’s selling here” I whispered, “I see a transistor radio over there for only 50 cents! Maybe we can get a good bargain.”
“Hey, guys, guess what?!” Pablo said excitedly, “It’s all right! And in mint condition! It’s worth $500,000 at least!”
We looked around for a few minutes and then something caught my eye. I saw an unlocked chest of drawers. I opened the top drawer and inside was a little bag. I pulled the drawstring of the fuzzy felt bag, and inside was a 1927 signed Babe Ruth card! I gasped loudly and all the other people glared at me like I had blood pouring out of my ears. Steve immediately called over Fred and asked how much he wanted to sell it for.
“Awesome!” screamed Steve, “I can’t even believe this!”
“Well, I think fifteen dollars would be plenty for just a silly piece of cardboard! “ he told us.
We rode our bikes to Steve’s house. It was already 7 o’clock at night, so we began the fun. We drank soda, watched baseball, and ate the most pepperoni pizza that the human body could consume. After we binge-watched SpongeBob, we went upstairs to sleep. We said good night and nodded off to sleep. At about 3 am, we heard a loud thud. We rushed down in a panic.
“Fifteen!” I and Steve exclaimed in unison, “But a card like that would at least cost almost!… I stomped on his foot so he could not go on any further.
“Gosh, Beckett! You’re like a walking sports encyclopedia!” said Steve.
“Steve, If things go well, and we get what we want we should split the money!” I told him. “Sounds like a plan, Beckett!” agreed Steve. We told Pablo that we were leaving and having a sleepover. Pablo said, “Cool, you boys have fun!”
“Ow!” yelled Steve. “What was that for?!” “Sounds like a deal!” I said quickly. I handed him a twenty-dollar bill.
I looked in the backpack - the card was gone! I looked out the window and saw a person wearing all black and a ski mask taking Steve’s bike.
“Sorry boys, I haven’t any change” Fred told us.
“He has the card!” “Get him”! I shouted.
“That’s ok, Fred - we don’t mind.”
We rushed out the door that leads to the garage.
“Bye!” shouted Fred, “You boys get home safely!”
“Let’s take the go-kart, it’s faster and it seats two,” Steve shouted.
We took the card straight to Pablo’s Sports Memorabilia Emporium over on 4th Street. When we got there, Pablo greeted us. “Hey boys, what can I do for you today?” We excitedly replied, “We want to see if this card is real!” We handed him the card. “I’ll be back in no time!” Pablo told us.
48
I slammed on the pedal - Steve’s go-kart was fast, and we were in pursuit of the bike. “I know who the thief is!” I shouted to Steve. “Who?” asked Steve. “Pablo,” I said.
My face whitened. Pablo made a brutal mistake and turned into an alleyway.
“Put on your clothes and a ski mask, we’re going on a heist,” I told him with nervous excitement.
“We’ve got him cornered!” I told Steve.
We rode our bikes quietly down the street.
Pablo dismounted the bike and backed up until he was against the wall.
“Got those wire cutters?” I whispered.
“Give us the card, Pablo!” we shouted. “Not in your dreams!’’ screamed Pablo. He threw a smoke bomb at us as we were blinded by the white cloud. When the smoke dissipated, he was gone. “At least we got my bike back,” said Steve, “but he got the card!” As we turned around, we saw Steve’s mom. “Steven McGillicutty McHugh!” she yelled furiously, “You are grounded for 3 weeks!” Steve groaned in pain. ‘’Goodbye Beckett” he said dismally. “See ya, Steve,” I said, and headed for home. It was 5 am when I got home, so I waited around the backyard until it was daylight hours so my mom would think that they had just dropped me off. The next day, I called Steve. “I’m not really in the mood for your drama, Beckett. My mom told me you’re a bad influence, and I need new friends” he told me.
Steve nodded. He handed them to me when we arrived at the shop. I cut a hole just wide enough for us to crawl through. We hid our bikes behind the dumpster. “We got really lucky! There’s a window wide open!” Steve exclaimed. “You’d think he would lock the place down,” I said. We scurried through the window and shut it behind us. “Look around for the card. And be careful, you never know what can happen when you’re dealing with a thief.” I said. We looked around for about 10 minutes when Steve suddenly found something. “Look at this box I found!” said Steve. I opened the box and there was the card. I picked it up and examined it to make sure it was real. Then someone put a cloth around my face, and everything went black. When I woke up, I was tied to a chair in the main entrance of the shop. Steve was holding the card! I couldn’t believe it! He had doublecrossed me!
“C’mon Steve don’t you want $250,000?!” I said. “Steve, how could you!” I asked. “Not really, especially after how much trouble I’m in!” said Steve. “I don’t know dude.” “Just one last hurrah, dude. That’s all I need from you” I told him. “I’m in, but as long as you promise that I won’t get grounded again” Steve said. “I promise. Just meet me in my backyard tomorrow at 10 pm. Bring black clothes, a ski mask, and wire cutters. Oh, and ride your bike, a go-kart is too noisy for a heist.” I told him. The next night, Steve met me in the backyard as I had asked.
“It was the only way to get all of the money!” said Steve. “Wait, what do you mean all of the money?” said Pablo. “The deal was to split the money!” He had double-crossed me and Pablo! Then all of a sudden, he snapped and two ginormous people in bullet-proof vests tied Pablo to a chair and put him next to me. “You Silly-Headed Dung Beetle!” shouted Pablo. “Keep watch over them until I get back!” Steve said to the guards.

Then, I got an idea, I loosened one of the bolts on the chair and used it to cut the ropes.
Then I did something that I instantly regretted. I ripped the card.
“Hey, Idiot!” Pablo whispered, “Untie me too!”
“NOOOOOOOOOO!” Steve yelled with agony, “You just destroyed my entire plan, you idiot!”
I ignored him and stayed still so the guards wouldn’t notice that I had untied the ropes. Then I picked up the chair and whacked both of the guards with it. They were out cold. I went into the room where Steve was and snatched the card right out of his hands. His mouth was hanging wide open. “But how did you…” he started saying.
“You got what you deserved, Steve!” I shouted angrily. Then, I realized what I had done, and inside I felt triumph, but I had just shredded a priceless piece of history that would be gone forever. But it was worth it.

When You Get Home
by Scarlett Payne & Camilla Tuman Hailey: Hey Cameron, what are you doing? Cameron: I’m driving to your house. Hailey: WHAT?! Cameron: Didn’t you invite me over? Hailey: No. Cameron: Wait, you sure? Look back at your texts. Hailey: No, I didn’t. Do you possibly know another Hailey? Cameron: Nope! Just you. Hailey: That’s weird. Well, stop by anyway so you can pick up your football jersey that you left at my house. Cameron: I’m wearing my football jersey right now! Hailey: OK something is up. Here’s your car now. Talk to you in a sec. Cameron: Wait, Hailey don’t go, I’m still on the interstate! Hailey: But isn’t your car a SUV car with that giant dent in the front? Cameron: Yeah! You did that, and I’m still mad! Hailey: That’s not the point! 5 minutes later…. Cameron: I’m coming into your driveway now Hailey: I can’t see you! Cameron: Come out to the front door. Hailey: Okay, I’m out - can you see me? Because I can’t see you. Cameron: NO! I can’t. Hailey: What is going on? If you’re tricking me, I will be so mad. Cameron: I promise I’m not tricking you. Hailey: Okay, it’s getting late. We don’t want things to get worse. Text me when you get home. But she never got that text, because Cameron never got home.

The Bell
by Will Whipple It was quiet in the house, eerily quiet. It was super dark. Also, the power must have gone out while I was asleep. And then, I woke up. I had passed out right after I had heard about the 11-year girl who was buried alive. I had fallen down in front of her tombstone in Charleston, South Carolina. My grandmother and I had gone on an evening ghost tour together. We were touring the oldest graveyard in Charleston and many of the dead bodies were buried in above ground tombs because of the severe flooding in Charleston. Charleston, like Washington DC, where my grandparents had moved from, is below sea level. So, dead bodies have to be buried above ground. The cemetery tour guide was a third generation Charlestonian. His grandfather was alive when the girl was alive, and he knew the horrible story of how she finally died. She had been very sick for a long time. Her family found her one morning, and they couldn’t wake her up. They thought she was dead, so they had a funeral for her. The tour guide told us that back then families would tie a bell to their loved ones’ large right toe. Then, they would bury them in an above ground coffin. Family members would take turns sitting by the coffin at night. If they heard the bell, then they knew their loved one was still alive. I was so confused, so I asked my grandmother why the bell on the toe. She told me that medicine was not as advanced as it is today, and they didn’t have the technology to confirm if a patient’s heart had finally stopped beating. I passed out when the tour guide told us that years later they opened her tomb and found her crouched up like a cat against the wall with broken finger bones and broken teeth. She had tried to claw and bite her way out of the tomb. She had been buried alive. I asked the tour guide why her family didn’t hear the bell if she was still alive. The watch woman was the mom of the girl but when she heard the bell, she had a heart attack. She never lived to tell the tale that her daughter was still alive. After that we went home. I played a little Fortnite. Then, I went to bed. Right when I was about to go to sleep, I heard the bell ring three times. Then I heard, “Help me!”…
