Welcome
in this issue... REGULARS 10 What you need to do & when 20 Ask the experts We are so excited to bring you our first Cornwall edition of the Silverlinings Wedding Guide. With Christmas seemingly ages ago, we’re now looking forward to 2019 weddings, and the new trends they will bring to 2020 weddings. Some of my personal favourite trends which we hope will go crazy are bold colours, floral wedding dresses, illustrated invites, zero waste weddings, and grazing tables. We absolutely love the Pantone Colour of the Year 2019 - Living Coral. While this bright hue isn’t a typical wedding color, it will make it all the more cool and original when you embrace it as your wedding colour! Look out for inspirational Coral mood boards and trends in the next edition. As a wedding planner, I am a great believer in a practical planning approach to weddings, and that couples should be armed with as many planning tools as possible. It enables you to understand and keep to your budget while still having the wedding of your dreams, and ultimately have a stress-free wedding planning experience! Our magazine has been a successful planning tool for our Midlands brides and grooms for over 15 years, and we truly hope you’ll find this guide useful in planning your special once-in-alifetime wedding day.

WEDDING
WHY YOU SHOULD GO TO
You’ve just got engaged, and the first question you’re asking yourself is “where do I start?” ANSWER: WEDDING FAIRS!
On any given weekend during this wedding fair season you’ll be within 10 miles of a number of wedding fairs. They range from the huge national events attended by thousands, to small and intimate afternoons at local venues. No matter what their size, the purpose is to inspire you and make planning your wedding easier.
HERE ARE 8 REASONS TO ATTEND A WEDDING FAIR:
Find your key suppliers Your suppliers will be part of your planning (i.e. your life!) for up to 2 years so it’s important you like them! There is no other place to meet so many suppliers in person, and many couples will book a supplier not just because their work looks amazing, but because they make a fantastic impression – pleasant, reliable, easy to talk to, confident.
THEY ARE FUN Your first fair is truly an amazing experience, and an opportunity to take your mum and girlfriends along to indulge in a day of wedding planning. There willl be lots of freebies to make your experience special, like Champagne on arrival, goody bags, bridal magazines and samples. Wedding fairs with catwalks or bridal shows are a real highlight, giving you the opportunity to see dresses on a model rather than just a hanger. 6
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
BE INSPIRED... Even though you’ve probably already created your Pinterest wedding, nothing compares to seeing everything for yourselves. Wedding fairs are full of inspiration and often have the unusual and quirky suppliers attending who you may not have come across while wading through the huge amount of information on Google. Being able to touch and feel things, or talk to different suppliers who
can show you what they do may even give you a different view on things you’ve dismissed. Seeing bridal gowns on models during a catwalk can show you what a dress looks like on and you may consider dresses you had previously overlooked.
Planning
FAIRS
04
...AND BE UNINSPIRED For the same reason wedding fairs are a great place to inspire you, something you may have thought ‘wow’ in a magazine or online may not be the same when you see it in person. Scrub it from the list and move onto the next idea!
Top Tips
FOR WEDDING FAIRS – Wear comfy shoes –P ut a pair of heels in your bag if you’re trying on dresses –S tay hydrated with a bottle of water –U se a camera - photos will help you remember suppliers –B ring a pen and paper to make notes –A fternoons are generally quieter
Latest trends Suppliers will want to show you what they can do from the traditional to the on-trend. You will soon notice what stands out across the suppliers.
LOOK OUT FOR THE DISCOUNTS & OFFERS Not all suppliers need to meet up with you to put a bespoke package together, and many will offer a ‘book now’ price if you’re happy to commit there and then. Even if you do need a meeting to discuss options, you’ll find reduced prices or something extra if you book an appointment at the show. If you don’t want to make any decisions at the fair, make a note of the deal being offered and speak to the supplier at a later date (just make sure you give the supplier your details so they know you were at the show).
08
HAVE CONVERSATIONS
FOOD FEST A great part of wedding fairs is the food and drink samples! It’s fun but also an important part of making informed decisions when choosing your cake maker or caterer. You want to eat your cake at the wedding so you want to ensure it looks amazing and tastes heavenly.
Chat with suppliers and ask them a heap of questions; it can be much easier than sending emails and waiting for replies, which invariably raises more questions! They will be able to tell you about their experiences and give you guidance or suggestions to help in your wedding planning. silverlinings.co.uk

THE HISTORY & WHERE NEXT? THE HISTORY Throughout history the joining together of a couple has been celebrated and formalised by a legal union – marriage. The laws relating to marriage in this country have deep roots in our history, and even today we can trace some of the legal aspects back to Henry VIII. His first divorce led to a schism with Rome and the Roman Catholic Church. Henry set up his own Church – the Church of England – which had, and still does have, its own rules for marriage. In 1837 after a number of problems with Clergy record keeping and clandestine marriages causing shock waves amongst the aristocracy, The General Register Office was brought into being, and the formal registration of births, deaths and marriages began.
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Legal
Marriages could now be contracted in a purely civil form with no religious content allowable. In addition recognition was given to marriages contracted in other faiths, such as Methodist, as long as they took place within Registered Religious buildings. The main Act which governs the law on marriage is The 1949 Marriage Act but there have been a few amendments since then. One of the most influential of these was The 1994 Marriage Act which allowed civil marriage to take place in premises licensed by the Registration Service. Licensed areas within the building must be named, and a permanent structure outdoors may be licensed, with the two Registration Officers officiating, the couple and, in some instances the two witnesses, remaining within the permanent structure during the ceremony. These ceremonies have to conform to the Marriage Act 1949 so they are not allowed to have any religious or spiritual connotation to them. The couple are able to have some limited ability to personalise the ceremony, but there is usually little, if any, opportunity to meet or speak with the Registration Officers who will be conducting the ceremony before the day. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? In 2005 Civil Partnerships came into being. This allowed same sex couples to gain the same rights as a heterosexual couple who marry. There are some differences between Marriage and Civil Partnership, especially in the way the legal contract is made.
In 2014, marriage was introduced for same sex couples. Civil Partnership was still restricted to same sex couples only. In 2018 a landmark ruling from the Supreme Court decreed that heterosexual couples should be able to contract a Civil Partnership; we are awaiting the date for this to be in place, but it is likely to be sometime next year. This will allow couples to choose to be together in a way that is not governed by some of the patriarchal traditions of the past, and as Celebrants, we are looking to develop ceremonies which will be reflective of the equality of their union.
WHERE NEXT? In the budget this year an announcement was made which took all of us by surprise – the promise of a review of marriage law following on from a Law Commission Report of 2015 which stated that the law around marriage was confusing and outdated. The view of the Law Commission was that a wholescale reform would be required, not just tinkering around the edges. However, the press coverage did concentrate on the possible relaxation of the rules around having alcohol and food available at the ceremony and allowing more premises such as pubs to become available for weddings; they also highlighted that legal ceremonies may be able to take place outdoors.
Marriage is a verbal contract, the couple have to say two sets of legal words – known as the Declaratory and Contracting words, to each other, in the presence of a Superintendent Registrar and a Registrar (often known as Ceremony Officers) and two witnesses. Once the words are spoken the couple are married, the signing of the Register is a record of the verbal contract, not an integral part of it.
No one really knows what the reforms will be, but as Independent Celebrants we are involved in letting the Government know our views. A reform which would enable Independent Celebrants (who allow rituals together with spiritual and religious elements within their ceremonies), and Humanist Celebrants to perform legal ceremonies, in addition to Registration Officers and Religious Ministers, would give the public true choice for their ceremony.
Civil Partnership is contracted when the couple, a Civil Partnership Registrar (just one), and two witnesses have signed the official document which is known as a Schedule, no words need to be spoken!
In the meantime, if you are looking for a ceremony which will be at the romantic heart of your day, then we are happy to help you celebrate. As Independent Celebrants we work with you to weave your story, your beliefs and your love into a ceremony as unique as you are. We have been to some amazing locations this year and worked with some incredible couples. We feel privileged to be able to call this work!

Planning
Choosing the date for your wedding is one of the most important decisions that you’ll have to make during the planning process. Whatever date you chose will impact every other aspect of your day.
1: TAKING THE WEATHER INTO ACCOUNT. Summer weddings are very popular but the weather can never be guaranteed so making alternative plans for your event to be both outside and inside is really important. Every couple hopes the weather on their wedding day will be perfect: 25 degrees heat, and not a cloud in the sky. But what if it isn’t? It’s best to be prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws your way, be it rain, sleet, snow or fog. After all, you can’t control the weather no matter how hard you try but you can plan for it!. Just remember as much as it’s your day consider your guests and their comfort levels. You may not be worried about standing in the cold when you say I do, but for your guests sharing this occasion with you will be baring the cold for a lot longer. The last thing you want is ruined heels, muddy trousers, numb fingers which equals unhappy guests! If you are braving the the colder weather or open locations, add a little extra to the budget for a cup of hot chocolate, or a rug to wrap around their shoulders. Adding these little touches will make a massive difference to the atmosphere of your ceremony.
18
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
BEST MONTH April and May, follow ed by September and October - it’s no surprise why as the weather can be absolutely beauti ful and there is less rain!
Talk to your venue. Although they will tell you, it won’t rain,” “think positive”, you should be prepared for the worst case scenario. Before you book a venue, find out what their Plan B set ups are. Do they have an indoor space available? Do they provide a canopy or some other type of temporary structure? While you were probably drawn to the venue for its primary spaces, you want to understand what you’ll get if the weather doesn’t cooperate. If the backup options are not going to suit you, (or there isn’t one), you may want to consider another venue or figure out if you can bring your own backup.
Planning
2: THINK BEFORE GETTING MARRIED DURING A MAJOR HOLIDAY PERIOD. In addition to Christmas, Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve, you may also want to reconsider tying the knot on religious holidays, event weekends, major sporting events, Father’s Day and other holidays of this nature. Although these weddings can be super fun and festive, your wedding date is something you want to celebrate for years to come because of the meaning behind it not because it was also NYE. Plus you should consider your guests. As much as they would want to be there, you also want to make it an event that your guests are excited about and can afford to attend. Hotels, flights and car rentals can all get very expensive,
3. CONSIDER YOUR BUDGET. Getting married in November or January might help cut your higher venue fee down but you have to be prepared to make sacrifices in other areas. For example, let’s say that daffodils are your absolute favorite flower and you can’t imagine having a bouquet with anything else. Depending on the time of year, it may be hard (if not impossible) for your florist to find them at a price that fits your budget. The same concept applies for Friday vs. Saturday weddings. Although a venue might be able to give you a slight discount for a Friday reception, be aware that the rest of your wedding vendors might not be able to. Choosing a winter wedding date gives you a big bargaining chip with your suppliers. Winter tends to be a less busy time of year so you’ll find more availability and suppliers are keen to sell their wares at this time. Look around and use the Internet to see what’s on offer. 4: CHAT TO YOUR NEAREST AND DEAREST. Now, depending on what other aspects of your wedding are important, you might want to keep an open mind to a few dates. What if your dream venue is booked or your favorite photographer is unavailable? Better yet, what about the important people in your family? You will want to make sure they can attend. Once you are juggling a couple of dates around, letting immediate family know is a good move. Chat to your family and friends and put the
CHEAPEST MONTH November, Janu ary, and March - du ring these months, vendor s are normally more available and less expensive. feelers out as to if any dates are. Since the date could be far in advance, and you haven’t announced officially with save-the-dates just yet, it’s a good way of being respectful of them in letting them know that we do have a plan. 5: GIVE YOURSELF PLENTY OF TIME AND DON’T RUSH IT! I have planned full weddings in just a few months and we’ve all seen how weddings can be pulled together within weeks on TV. However, what you might not be aware of is the cost that it takes to ensure that a big celebration can be executed quickly. When a bride reaches out to me and asks if I can help plan her big day in a short amount of time, I always tell her that anything is possible, but there might be areas that she will have to sacrifice. For example, a custom wedding gown can take over a year to create, depending on what you want. Also, your custom logoed favors, centerpieces or invitations may not end up exactly how you had planned. The moral of the story is to make sure you give yourself enough time to plan for the things that are truly important to you, whether it’s incorporating lace from your mum’s dress to use in your own gown or getting hand-crafted favors from your favorite travel destination.

Ask the
TOP TIPS FROM WEDDING INDUSTRY BUSINESSES VENUE - PENTILLIE CASTLE Knowledge and preparation early on will save you time and money later! Before visiting a venue, do some preparation in advance and know the important stuff – were not talking colour schemes and decor, were talking… guest numbers and budget. Take a list of questions and don’t be afraid to ask more as they pop into your head. Some key questions should include: Does the price include VAT? Is there a corkage fee? Do you need to pay a damages deposit? You really do not want any nasty surprises later! HAIR - ZEBRAFINCH Think about how you wear your hair day to day, and then think about how to take it up a notch! For me, the most important thing is that you look like you at your very best, not someone else! Your hair should compliment your dress and any jewellery you’re wearing, so think about the neckline and if you’re wearing earrings you want to be seen. Don’t presume your hairdresser will do hair-ups as it’s a skill many stylists don’t have; do your research and make sure you find a stylist who suits your style. Most hairdressers will have their own style so try and find someone with work that is similar to your taste. It’s never too early to start thinking about how you want to wear your hair as you may even need to change your cut to suit how you want to wear it on the day. FLOWERS - TIDE FLOWERS When you have a shortlist of potential florists, arrange to meet us for the first time face to face, or at the very least a skype or phone call if we are not local to you. This is our opportunity to get to know each other and build rapport – not easily done with just written words. We’ll want to get to know your vibe, your vision and your budget so come prepared. The more information you can give us about your day, the better equipped we’ll be to make suggestions and provide a quote that brings it all to life perfectly. 20
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Ask the expert MAKEUP - JASMINE MAKEUP & BEAUTY As a wedding makeup artist I say to all my clients, when they have their trial it is important to always take care of their skin. A thorough day and night skin care routine 3-6 months before will create the perfect platform for your makeup to be applied. Don’t be tempted to do a special skin care routine the night before as this can lead to skin irritation. Before and after the makeup application you should try to avoid touching your face as bacteria from your hands can aggravate your skin and ruin your makeup. If you need to touch your face always wash your hands with antibacterial wash before. These simple steps will you help achieve a flawless finish and bridal glow. CAKES - CLAIRE’S SWEET TEMPTATIONS I think the biggest piece of advice I could give about choosing your cake and cake maker is not to leave it too long! Some ‘advice’ says the cake can be left until last, but that’s just not true. A good cake maker will get booked up months ahead. So as soon as you’ve booked your venue, then start looking for who you’d like to make your cake. Ask for recommendations, and always have a good look at their website. You’ll be able to see if they match your style and budget. Although most wedding cakes are bespoke, so prices on websites are usually only a guide. When you decide on who you’d like to get in touch with, remember these few things we need to know. The wedding date, the venue, the rough number of guests the cake is for and the style you are thinking of. That’s enough for a good cake designer to give you some prices. DECOR & THEMES THE UNIQUE CORNISH EVENT Pinterest is a wonderful tool In terms of pulling together the styles and decor that you love. Once you’ve built up images, take another look and see the style you tend to be veering towards. Are your pins more nautical, boho, luxe? Once you’ve seen the predominant trend, then create a separate board that is geared just towards that style. I also love doing tactile boards, they’re great fun and can really help in finding the right colours, tones and shades. The one thing I would say is once you’ve decided on your theme, stay true to it.
I’m also a great believer in colour, don’t be shy, or stick with tradition, remember it’s your day, go for it. PHOTOGRAPHER - IMAGES CORNWALL We have been capturing weddings for over 18 years now and through our experience a top tip when choosing your wedding photographer/s is the importance of meeting them first. You spend a huge part of the day with your photographer/s and if you don’t click with them it can make your most special of days very awkward. We always suggest doing a pre-wedding photo shoot which is a great way to “break the ice” and to get to know each other. PLANNING - COUNTRY & COAST WEDDINGS Remember, this is your day - not your parents, not your grandparents, not your maid of honor’s! Trying to please everyone is tricky, but ultimately keeping everyone happy can seem like an impossible task. With the average wedding having around 80 guests, it’s also impossible to second-guess what will please each and every guest. Sit down with your fiance and make sure you list down everything about the day which is the most important to you both...and stick to it. silverlinings.co.uk

FROM GRIFFIN PHOTOGRAPHY griffin-photography.co.uk
HOW DID YOU START OUT IN PHOTOGRAPHY? I have always loved photography and used it to document my two children growing up. I started my own photography business in 2011 as it happened naturally. Friends started to ask me to photograph for them and then it spread from there. More and more people started to hire me so my business grew into what it has become today. WHO OR WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOUR CAREER? I started my career in fashion design so when I started my photography business, fashion was an area that felt very natural to me. Since 2011 I have been lucky to work for many big global brands and businesses as well as clients in Cornwall, where I live. As I have created images for fashion designers and for publications, bridal designers started to contact me to create content for them. This also grew into creating styled bridal photo shoots for venues and editorials. I LOVE working in bridal because I get to work with the most stunning designer dresses and incredible venues. Due to this kind of work I also photograph small weddings and elopements across Cornwall. I love meeting new people and enjoy capturing their wedding day. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? I guess you would say its high end and editorial looking. My style of wedding photography is very natural and reportage with an editorial twist with the bridal portraits I take. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE STYLE OF WEDDING TO SHOOT? Oh has to be small and intimate, in a stunning old venue. One of my favourite weddings I have had the pleasure of doing was one in London in a venue that overlooked Ben Big and the London Eye.

TOP TIP Ask lots of questions to your chosen photographer. Make sure you know what you are getting with their services. I love to get to know my brides and grooms and many times they have later hired me to be their family photographer to cover their new born baby stories.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE WEDDING OR VENUE? Yes, my favourite wedding was for a bride to be who I had worked for commercially. She was a couture fashion designer who I worked with to create three of her fashion campaigns. She then hired me to be her wedding photographer and what was nice was that her images matched her campaigns we had created together.

FOR OCEAN DIAMONDS Diamonds began their treacherous journey to the sea millions of years ago, carried along through torrent and flow by the patient power of rivers. Only the most precious and resilient diamonds survive this natural filtration. These are retrieved from the depths of the sea by divers so that they can continue their journey with you. When I came across Ocean Diamonds, I was immediately drawn to the romance of someone actually diving for a diamond, and having a vision on these diamonds literally being plucked from the sea bed. The reality is less romantic but still intriguing and still as dangerous as traditional mining methods. Along the Namibian and South African West Coast local divers venture out between storms and pick out Ocean Diamonds lodged between gullies and hidden within gravel beds. More importantly, this is a natural and environmentally friendly method of recovery. While diving at depth is dangerous, conditions in underground mines are a constant hazard. Ocean Diamonds Ltd monitors and audits harvesting to assure that each stone can be rightfully branded a true Ocean Diamond and are never a source of funding for human conflicts.
Ocean Diamonds are natural and free of artificial treatments. Cutting and polishing is done to bring out the brilliance and beauty of the natural gem. On rare occasions crystal diamonds are discovered exhibiting the classic octahedral diamond form. It would be a travesty to cut these magnificent gems of the sea and we offer these as nature intended, in their untouched and natural state. Ocean Diamonds have teamed up with some of the best jewellery designers and makers in Cornwall to help you select your stones to have made into your unique timeless wedding bands.

HOW TO PLAN A
WEDDING with Hannah Morris from Enamelware Events Are you hoping to create a zero waste wedding (or let’s face it, low waste)? You’ve come to the right place! Here are a few tips to get you going. I would say the core thing to remember is to plan ahead and to delegate well. Take time to walk through your wedding day in your head, picture your venue and consider where you will need to ask someone to step in or add something to your ‘to bring’ list.

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Planning
PAUSE BEFORE YOU BUY Beg, borrow and hire as much as you can. Buying things new can seem appealing and can sometimes amount to the same as hiring. But, if every couple kept doing that we would acquire endless clutter and waste! Check Gumtree, hiring websites (like Enamelware Events) and ask around on social media – you might well have friends or neighbours with unused crafty bits, table decor, fairy lights and all-sorts that they’d be glad for you to use. RECYCLING Check out the recycling setup at your venue in advance. It may be basic, e.g. if you’re at a farm, create your own! Even just sticking on bits of paper to different buckets (bringing them with you if need be) to say ‘recycling’ and ‘compost’, and so on, will help your guests sort it out for themselves as they go. Set this up as soon as you arrive at your venue. If there are no facilities to recycle or compost on site, find a friend to take the waste home with them. WATER STATION Set up a water station to keep your guests hydrated, avoiding water bottles. Supply cups – we’re a bit biased, but we’d recommend enamel ones – and if you really can’t face extra washing up, choose biodegradable cups. If you’re sending out digital reminders for your wedding the week before, you could even encourage your guests to bring a cup or bottle to use for water refills. SAVE THE DATES If you can, why not send out the save the dates online to save on extra paper and resources. Paperless Post did it for us. This method allows you to keep your guests updated while you prepare the invitations (which could also be paperless, but we know how lovely an opportunity it is to create your own ‘real’ invites!) SUPPLIERS Choose your suppliers carefully. The Natural Wedding Company has a carefully curated directory of suppliers in the UK with eco credentials from caterers to photographers to stylists. And don’t be afraid to ask your supplier to do something they don’t normally do. If you’re having a mobile bar, check what the drinks will be served in and if they’re recyclable and/ or biodegradable. Find out if they will take the waste back with them to be sorted or reused.
FIND MULTIPLE USES This is key to keeping costs down, to limit waste and make the best use of your resources. Flowers can get costly if you need to dress different spaces as well as provide buttonholes, bouquets and extra bits. Why not use the bridesmaid bouquets for some of your table decorations – get vases/jars with water in ready for them. Do the same for your bridal bouquet; find a prime spot where it will be seen and enjoyed! If you choose some special vases, you could gift the vases to your bridesmaids for them to take home with them. If you’re having a flower arch for your ceremony, see if you can bring it inside for your party later on as a backdrop. FORAGE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN* Ivy is generally in abundance and can be gathered up to 2 days in advance before it starts wilting. Make use of what’s around you for free. Spray pine cones and leaves gold and sprinkle them across your dinner tables. Rosemary and lavender can also be foraged and are great to use in buttonholes and table settings for a touch of nature and a lovely scent. DITCH THE DISPOSABLES Disposables might seem easier, but hiring really isn’t more of a hassle. For example, Fabric napkins feel much more luxurious and can add the finishing touch to your table setup. As with our fabric napkins, at Enamelware Events we allow you to return our dinnerware and cutlery unwashed, so it really isn’t extra work for you. Some venues will ask that you take all waste home with you, so save someone for that task! KEEP THE CANDLES BURNING Let me explain. We bought lots and lots of pillar candles for our wedding. Sadly they all came wrapped in plastic, and now we have boxes full of candles with only a bit used on each. I’ve been wondering about adding these candles to our hire list, and as they get burned down I will lower the hire price each time. What do you think – would you use second-hand candles? PICK UP THE PETALS Make your own confetti from dried petals. Use it as an excuse to get outside and go hunting for petals with your friends while you natter! You want to get freshly fallen petals. The two methods myself and my friends used were the microwave method, oven-drying and, my favourite, just leaving them by the window to dry in the sun slowly. * With owner’s permission! silverlinings.co.uk

Real weddings VENUE FOR CEREMONY & RECEPTION Both the ceremony and our reception were held at Beacon Crag, Porthleven. We had an outdoor, humanist ceremony followed by a marquee reception. We wanted to be as close to the sea as possible and Beacon Crag definitely ticked that box. The cliff top location is spectacular. The owner, Samantha, is really friendly and the venue had good spaces with stunning sea views for both the marquee and our outdoor ceremony. Kim Baker from Humanists UK performed our ceremony; it was lovely and very personal to us. THEMES/COLOUR SCHEMES We love to travel so that was some inspiration for the wedding style. All we had for the wedding was a marquee and the lawns so we had a blank canvas to put our own mark on the day. We had friends attending from all over the world so we made a sign pointing to all the different places people had travelled from to acknowledge their efforts - we even had guests fly in from New York and Dakar, Senegal! The colour scheme was blues and greens and instead of bunting we had personalised papel picado handmade in Mexico, ordered from Mexican Decorations on Etsy. BRIDAL WEAR I didn’t feel comfortable with the fuss of a formal bridal shop experience, plus they wanted 5-6 months and thousands of pounds to make what I thought were quite simple designs. So I found a style I liked on Pinterest by a French designer called Laure de Sagazan and decided to try and make a variation on it. I ordered the fabric online and sewed it together by hand, then one of my mum’s friends did the seams and hem with a machine because I don’t have one!

BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES
Mismatched dresses were ordered online from Show Me Your Mumu in the US and delivered to a friend’s office in San Francisco!
Real weddings SUITS Gareth doesn’t like wearing a suit so he put together an outfit from various high street shops. FLOWERS We found examples on Pinterest that we liked and asked my mum to work with James from Flowers by Clowance to create with flowers that were in season. My mum’s done flowers for several wedding so we were in good hands! PHOTOGRAPHY We liked his portfolio and he was great, really relaxed when we first met him and gave a lot of advice and pointers. We loved his photos. CATERING We had delicious vegetarian sharing platters from Miss Tea through the day, and we had friends make some deserts. We provided all the drinks for the day from a booze cruise to France - we love Calais Vin and will be back! Gareth even brewed his own wedding beer for the day and he built the bar for the drinks to be served from! We had some delicious pasties delivered for the late evening food from ‘Bray’s and K’s’. ENTERTAINMENT We had an awesome band called ‘The Tritones’ who came down from Bristol to play during the evening. They performed a song Bekka wrote herself for our first dance and they even let us sing a song! After they finished we had another band, ‘Granite Pants’, formed from some friends of ours, play music into the small hours! During the day we had our own music playing through our friend’s PA system.
MEMORABLE MOMENT We had a Hawaiia n style lei ceremon y during the wedding where we presented flora l leis to our parents an d they placed leis on us. Our friends Jess an d Vicky (surgeon s by day!) made the leis in sec ret so it was a comp lete surprise for our pa rents. It was a rea lly lovely moment wh ere we were able to acknowled ge their importance to us.

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Marquees
Our sister company, Country & Coast Weddings, manages marquee venues, so we have a fair idea what goes into planning a marquee wedding. Marquee weddings are the reason I started wedding planning; they are a blank canvas, they can be put up anywhere, and they can accommodate any size wedding. But the idea of a marquee wedding puts many couples off the idea as there are various logistical and planning considerations to take into account when organising a marquee wedding. Let’s start with the marquee and tipi options. CLEAR SPAN MARQUEE This marquee is now the ‘standard’ or ‘traditional’ marquee option for the majority of couples. It’s called a clear span as there are no poles in the marquee, the span is clear! They are watertight (usually!), warm (if heated), easy to size according to guest numbers (using sections), and are readily available (most marquee companies supply them). They are perfect for a wedding any time of year, and I especially love the clear plastic sections which make it feel like you’re outside even when you’re inside! POLE & ROPE MARQUEE I refer to these as the ‘old traditional marquees’ as this is what a marquee was 20+ years ago! Picture a summer fete tent or a circus tent and you’ll be able to visualise one of these. They are held up by 2 or more giant posts through the centre, smaller poles around the sides, and lots of ropes! They are perfect look for any festival, boho, or vintage wedding. On the downside, they are not always watertight or warm so best kept to the summer months. CAPRI TENT In all honesty these should be kept to parties or as a cover for a drinks reception! GIANT TIPIS A tipi is the iconic festival wedding option! It encompasses the non-traditional, fun, colourful, informal, casual feel of a festival wedding. They are super cool and we love them! Couple of downsides (or require compromises?) are that they aren’t as weather proof as a clear span, they take a little longer to put up, and they can be expensive to accommodate your guest numbers.

Marquees
So, now you know the differences between the main marquee and tipi options, what else do you need to know?
STYLE Knowing what style of wedding you want will help make the decision on which marquee or tipi to have a little easier. If a classic wedding is your style, with a room full of white blooms and crisp lines, then the clear span is the marquee for you. If Afternoon Tea with lots of colour and bunting, then go for the pole & rope marquee.
LOGISTICS When you’re looking for, or have found, your marquee venue you’ll need to think about logistics such as: site access – is there suitable access for a lorry, will parked cars be able to leave if there has been rain parking – is there sufficient parking for everyone, plus lighting for the evening water – does the site have water and is it drinkable power – can you take power from a source on site or will you need a generator toilets – are there any close by or do you need some posh loos Almost all marquee companies will arrange a generator, posh loos, and a water source for you so you it isn’t something to worry about. 54
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
CATERING When it comes to wedding catering in a marquee, think outside the box! There are usually no restrictions on what type of caterer you can have and in almost all occasions caterers working from a van will be able to park right up to the door.
How about a few ideas… food stations – sushi, crepes, pies, tacos, fish & chip vans, pizzas served from a Land Rover Defender, Ploughman’s lunch as sharing platters or picnic style or a Great British Bake Off cake table.
Marquees
WEDDING INSURANCE & LICENCES Without a doubt make sure you have wedding insurance if you’re planning on a marquee wedding. Venues have lots of backups in place so little can go wrong, but there are so many elements in a marquee wedding, it is better to be prepared. Most wedding insurances offer an ‘add on’ for a marquee wedding, with policies costing somewhere around £150. We are often asked if you need a licence for your wedding marquee, and the short answer is maybe! There are 8 activities which require a licence but only 3 would mainly apply when thinking about your wedding in a marquee: 1. a performance of live music 2. entertainment of a similar description to live music, recorded music or dance. 3. t he sale of alcohol (either at a cash bar or as part of a ticket price)
Now, before you rush out and get a Temporary Events Notice (TEN) just ask yourself if the music is “for a consideration or with a view to a profit”. The answer is probably not, so you don’t need a TEN. But if you are selling alcohol then you will need one. Most bar companies will have this in place, so you don’t need to worry. But make sure you keep it in mind if you are running your own bar. If you do need a TEN, it is easy to obtain, it costs just £21, and it needs to be done through your local council.
WEDDING COORDINATION Seriously consider hiring the services of a wedding planner to coordinate the day. Mainstream venues will have a wedding coordinator on hand to deal with any problems during the day, whereas most marquee weddings are reliant on the couple or their family & friends to step in should something go wrong. A wedding planner will be the main point of contact for the numerous of suppliers who will be involved in your day. They are the person who opens up in the morning and turns off the generator at the end! Plus they can do any last minute venue decoration, keep an eye on timings, and act as an unofficial Toastmaster (although you can’t beat the real thing!).

The Alverton was the only venue we looked at. The second we saw “The Great Hall” it took our breath away with its “wow” factor!
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE VENUE Neither of us are overly religious but we wanted that traditional “church” feeling of getting married. The Alverton was the only venue we looked at. The second we saw “The Great Hall” it took our breath away with its “wow” factor! It felt so grand, it made us want to whisper! Helen the wedding coordinator was fantastic from start to finish with nothing being too much trouble! We felt so lucky to have Helen looking after us, we knew our day was in safe hands! PHOTOGRAPHY Sophie has known Pat and Carolyn for many years, so it was a no brainer for us. We’ve seen a lot of their work over the years and we knew they would do a fantastic job, as they always do. We weren’t disappointed! They worked so hard to make sure they captured every part of our special day. They made sure all the photo ideas we put to them were captured and they were checking with us all day to make sure we had everything we wanted. They really went above and beyond to make our day so special. They are both so lovely and managed to control our crazy families! We just can’t thank them enough.
Be the bride, not the host. Just enjoy your special day and enjoy being a bride! Don’t stress the small stuff!

VIDEOGRAPHER Tim captured my friend’s wedding video last year. When we were thinking about videographers her video came to mind and so we got in touch with Tim! BRIDAL HAIR I asked for recommendations on Facebook for hairdressers and Dora was recommended so many times. She was so helpful, friendly and even helped the bridesmaids get into their dresses once everyone’s hair and makeup was done!
Take an hour to yourselves, away from your guests to have some photos of just the two of you. It really helped us to take everything in and reconnect amongst all the craziness of the day.
Be as organised as possible. Get a good wedding planning book and leave as little as possible for your venue. It will give them more time to perfect the smaller details that make the day run smoothly. silverlinings.co.uk

Real weddings BRIDAL MAKEUP Haley did my cousin’s (Maid of Honour) make up a few years ago for her wedding. She came very highly recommended. Haley uses airbrush makeup, which is silicone based so it doesn’t run or smudge, but it also feels like you have no makeup on. It is so light and isn’t “cakey” at all. It was a pleasure to have Haley with us the morning of the wedding. She is so friendly and chatty, she fitted in as one of the girls! FLOWERS Racheal provided the long and low for the top table, all the table arrangements, button holes, 4 bridesmaids and 1 bridal bouquet. Racheal was a Facebook recommendation.
CAKE Sophie has known Suzi for years and knows how amazing her cakes are. So another easy decision for us. Suzi really is the best in the business! Her cakes look incredible and taste as good as they look! STATIONERY We did all our stationary ourselves. Invitations, table plan, name cards, kids boxes, favour boxes and the personalised champagne glasses too! Lots of hours of work, but so worth it!

ENTERTAINMENT Our wedding breakfast finished around 5pm and we wanted some time for ourselves to take everything in and get some photographs of just the two of us. We knew we had time for this between the wedding breakfast and evening reception, but we wanted our guests to be entertained all day. So we hired Joe and asked my godfather Andy to play their different styles between 5pm and 7pm so guests could relax, have a drink and have some music to listen to or sing and dance along to if they wanted. We had brilliant reviews about them both from all our guests!

Real weddings We had the ceremony outside, which was always our (hopeful) plan and thankfully the weather allowed! We had clear blue skies with a slight breeze; it really couldn’t have been better, so most of our day was spent outside. After the ceremony, the guests made their way to the lawn and formed two lines facing the sea, ready for a confetti throw – these are some of our favourite photos. We had canapés and drinks on the lawn, enjoying the afternoon sun. When we were planning our day, we also had to think about Jess’s Dad who uses a wheelchair and therefore could only access some areas and via the ramps. Even though we had Dad’s carer with us, I was nervous about how my Dad would get on, however I needn’t have worried - its quite surprising how wheelchair friendly a rural, cliff-side, converted fort can be! And it was very special to see our guests playing heroes and carrying my Dad in his chair to the lawn so he could be involved in every part of the wedding.
We are huge lovers of the outdoors and of the coast, so we wanted to reflect the Fort’s naturally beautiful setting and surroundings. We kept things simple, with a relaxed, coastal theme and wanted decorations to be as personal as possible (which also helped keep costs down). We hand-made candle and flower vases from recycled jam jars and rope, we made signs from up-cycled pallets and borrowed our friend’s handmade bunting they had at their wedding. We have a family full of florists and floral enthusiasts who did a fantastic job of decorating the Fort! We collected foliage from a family friend’s garden and bought in-season flowers from a local nursery. We had small displays in jars on tables and around the fort and two large displays of foliage, gypsophila, sprayed hydrangeas and cornflowers either side of gazebo entrance.
Our photographer took our wedding party and the two of us down to the beach for the couple shots and some fun photos with bridesmaids and ushers – Jess loves the photos of her and her bridesmaids running into the sea. Matt didn’t want a traditional morning or formal 3-piece suit, so went with chinos, tweed-style waistcoat, smart-casual jacket and tie, same for the ushers and all bought online from high-street shops. The bridesmaid dresses were from ASOS and Jess wore a Pronovias sample dress, which she found in a local dress shop and wore her Mum’s veil for the ceremony, something old and borrowed.

Real weddings The Polhawn Fort team made everything so easy; it really is flexible and they are all genuinely willing to help make your day exactly how you want it. We had a thick garland of foliage over at the arch in the Main Hall, which was really impressive. So that the family didn’t have to do all the flowers, Jess handmade silk bouquets for her and her bridesmaids… and now they are on display in our houses. We kept save the dates really simple by sending a digital personalised photo of us, the guest and the date that we made on a photo app, then sent them over WhatsApp. Jess designed and printed the invitations herself, which was time consuming but they looked effective and it was a nice personal touch. It also helped us create a coastal theme for all stationary. We handmade the table plan using the same stationery as the invites and wrote the table name on the glass flower jars, which made the tables less cluttered. Matt’s sister is an incredible baker and made us a 3-tiered naked chocolate cake with buttercream icing and decorated with the same flowers that we had around the venue. I picked up ta floating cake stand from Gumtree, which made the cake look grand. We used the full capacity for a sit down meal with speeches before so everyone could relax during the meal. We had been recommended Couch’s and they were incredible from start to finish. We met Rich a few months before to discuss menu options; Rich and his team were so flexible, knowledgeable and willing to shape the menus so you were happy with every aspect. We wanted the food to be high quality and locally sourced but without being too pretentious, Rich got the brief completely and we were so happy with the food, as were our guests, who still rave about how delicious it all was!
Matt loves canapés so we made sure we had lots of delicious ones for our guests. Our main meal was sharing boards of racks of lamb, grilled salmon, seasonal greens, couscous, amazing focaccia breeds and dressed new potatoes. Desert was a trio of champagne and elderflower jelly, chocolate brownie and a mini cheesecake. All of our favourite tastes. At 10pm, we served homemade Cornish (and veggie and vegan) pasties, and our wedding cake. They went down a storm! The Wild Bride was our photographer and videographer; a husband and wife duo who are incredibly talented, a bonus that Emilie is also Jess’s school friend. We loved their relaxed and candid style and we thought it really suited the venue, we couldn’t be happier with our photos and video. In the evening, we had the excellent band AKA, a four piece that kept everyone dancing all night! They played a real mix and it was a lot of fun!

PENTILLE CASTLE
Lorah-Kate and William met at work in a Primary school in London; Lorah-Kate’s first impressions of William was ‘he’s cute’. She was then put in his class to cover him where she really got to know him. Williams first impression of Lorah-Kate ‘Stunning eyes and gorgeous smile’ William proposed at the top of the Gomergrat Mountain in Switzerland, on a little ledge sticking out over the glacier. Their engagement was four months and 5 day’s so their wedding planning plan can be described in one-word ‘Simplicity!’ They chose Pentillie because it looked beautiful and it was in a gorgeous location. They had their ceremony and reception in the beautiful Bathing Hut. Lorah-Kate chose her dress because it fitted! The maternity dress was from Seraphine and was the only maternity dress that she liked that also fit really well.

The stunning flowers came from Grace and Thorn, London the brief was pastel pink and dark pink flowers with lots of tones and textures, creating a wild statement. Roses, astrantia, green bell, asparagus fern and stock. How did you feel as you walked down the aisle? So excited, goofy, too smiley, nervous butterflies, mesmerised at how gorgeous William looked in his suit. What was your favourite part of the wedding? All of it! The photos in the grounds were fun, getting muddy in our wellies. What is your top tip for other elopement couples? Don’t stress, enjoy every moment, don’t sweat the little details so much.

Real weddings Rachel and Ash fell for the romance of a simple beach wedding, a relaxed day one to share with family and friends. A beach wedding also provides you with plenty of natural scenery and natural light that your photographer will love. Their relaxed ceremony took place at Lusty Glaze a fully licensed venue, Rachel wore a stunning dress from Wed2B and her beautiful bouquet was by Coastal Floral Design. The weather on the day was mixed, sun, showers and a little windy, for a photographer this is perfect. And for their day Rachel and Ash chose the very talented Alexa Poppe Photography who took full advantage of the stormy skies and the beautiful light to capture these wonderful wedding images.

TOP TIP
DAY TIMINGS
...work backward s! If you’ve found your venue, ask wh at time the party has to finish and the n decide what time you want to inv ite your evening guests from. From this, you will then know the latest tim e at which you ca n have your wedding breakfast.
Timings for your wedding day are one of the hardest things to gauge for any couple not used to organising large events. I always recommend working out the day plan early on in the planning process (at least have an overview) as it helps the whole day fall into place.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS: Week day weddings, including Friday: remember your guests have to finish work and get ready, so a later evening start is better Suppliers’ other weddings: your suppliers may have more than one wedding that day; for instance, you may find your makeup artist is going on or coming from another wedding, so this may impact your bridal prep Time of year: summer weddings can have a lengthy drinks reception, allowing your guests to savour the sunshine, but winter weddings are better with a shorter drinks reception particularly in smaller venues.
74
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Planning
Use this simple template as a starting point; it’s based on a civil ceremony at the same venue as your reception. 9.00am - Bridal prep
How long this will take depends on the number of bridesmaids and mums having their hair and makeup done professionally, along with the complexity of your hair and makeup. Give yourself 30 mins to get into your dress once you’re all done.
12.00pm - Groom to be at the ceremony venue
The groom and his ushers should be on hand to welcome your guests as they arrive. The bride should plan on not being late!
1.00pm - Ceremony
A civil ceremony can be up to 30 mins. If you are having a church ceremony, this will take approximately 1 hour and remember to factor in travel times between the church and your venue.
1.30pm - Drinks reception
With a ceremony around lunchtime, many guests won’t have had time for lunch, so make sure there are plenty of canapes.
2.00pm - ‘Officia l ’ photographs
Even if you have opted for more reportage style, you will still want some formal photos of family and friends for the mantlepiece! Ask ushers or family to help organise people to keep it as smooth as possible.
3.00pm - Called to be seated for your Wedding Breakfast
If you have around 100 guests this can take up to 30 mins. A receiving line will lengthen this, even double it if you have a traditional lineup.
3.30pm - Wedding Breakfast served
This usually this takes between 1 hours to 2 hours, depend ing on the menu. More informal styles, like a buffet or BBQ can take longer.
5.30pm - End of the Wedding Breakfast, time for speec hes!
Try to keep your speeches to 30 minutes - after that, your guests get fidgety! Venues in the summer can be stifling warm, so consider having speeches outside before the meal.
6.00pm - End of the formal part of the day
If the room needs to be cleared of tables and chairs for the evening, then you’ ll be ask to move to another part of the venue while this happens.
7.00pm - Evening guests arrive
Many couples leave the cake cutting to this part of the day; it includes the evening guests in one of the traditions of a wedding day. Following this with the first dance always works well.
12.00a m - Carriages
Most venues will close the bar and stop the music an hour before this time.

Catering
True cost of food & drink FOOD AND DRINK ARE A MAJOR PART OF THE WEDDING EXPERIENCE (NO ONE WANTS HANGRY GUESTS!), SO IT’S NO SURPRISE THAT YOU’LL SPEND A BIG AMOUNT OF YOUR TOTAL BUDGET ON YOUR WEDDING CATERING. According to Bridebook, the average wedding food and drink cost is £5,862. The report also shows 33% spent more on food and drink than budgeted for, which suggests there is a lack of understanding on how much this costs. If your wedding catering isn’t booked as part of your wedding venue, you should
76
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
find your caterer immediately after you book your venue. Wedding fairs are a great place to meet caterers as you can usually try small bites. Most caterers will offer a private or group tasting session which is usually chargeable but deducted if you book; so only use the tasting to make your final decision!
Catering
The cost of catering Your wedding catering may be provided by your wedding venue, or you may need to hire an outside caterer. Reading a wedding catering contract can be a bit confusing, but in general, your wedding catering cost will be priced on a “per person” basis. A standard wedding catering package includes the following: Food: You’re paying for the actual food that your guests will eat which actually makes up a surprisingly small amount of the per head cost. Remember that locally sourced produce and seasonal food will cost less than food that would have to be sourced from elsewhere. Staffing: From your event manager to chefs, waiters to bartenders, there are lot of staff that will go into making your wedding day a success. Work with your caterer to make sure that you have enough people on hand to ensure a smooth reception.
Questions for your caterer How much flexibility do we have in terms of our menu options?
What service styles do you offer? Can you handle allergies and dietary restrictions? Do you have an alcohol license? How do menu tastings work? Can you provide other supplier meals?
Equipment: Outside caterers will normally need to use hired in dishes, glassware, table linen, utensils, and more. A marquee wedding will have to have a mobile kitchen set up in the catering tent.
HOW CAN YOU SAVE MONEY ON WEDDING FOOD AND DRINKS?
Additional fees: Be sure to read your contract carefully to make sure you understand your wedding catering cost. Check for ‘plus VAT’ as many caterers will quote ‘ex VAT’ missing that could add an unexpected 20% to your bill.
- Skip a starter and serve canapes instead. Often more appreciated as guests are hungry, the cost should be less than serving 3 courses.
STYLES OF WEDDING BREAKFAST FOOD When determining your wedding food cost, how you’re planning on serving the meal can reflect on the price per head: Plated: Otherwise known as a sit-down meal, your guests will be served their meal at their table by the waiting staff. There may be a single option or several options, which your guests can either order in advance (usually on their RSVP card) or on the day. Buffet or BBQ: For a more casual serving style, guests serve themselves from a buffet station or a BBQ. Platters: Servers provide large platters of food to reception tables, and guests serve themselves. A fun alternative is to invite a guest from each table to act as ‘chef’ to carve a big joint of meat for each guest! Bowl food: A more modern service style, food is served as small bowls of food, eaten with a fork alongside canapes or small ‘bites’. This allows guests to walk around, and mix and mingle during the reception instead of sitting at their tables. THE BUDGET OPTION Most of the time, a wedding breakfast buffet or BBQ is indeed less expensive than a plated dinner. While you’ll pay less in staffing and hire equipment for a buffet-style meal, you’ll need more food since guests are serving themselves. To keep your buffet budget-friendly, avoid serving costly foods buffet-style or have staff on hand to serve, helping to keep the portions under control.
-U se your cake for pudding. Most wedding cakes are wasted after they are cut in the evening, so cut it before guests are seated for the wedding breakfast and serve it with berries and cream. -F or a more informal wedding, have speeches before everyone is seated which saves on serving a fresh glass of bubbles. -S erving the wedding breakfast later in the day reduces the need for evening catering. - Have a Cheese Cake instead of a traditional cake and use it in the evening as a snack served with port. -H ave an accurate number of guests when you talk to caterers as the per head cost can alter, up or down, depending on the number of guests you have. -C ommunication is key - tell your guests when and what they are eating so they can be prepared to ensure they have eaten sufficiently before they arrive. silverlinings.co.uk

Catering
The cost of alcohol When choosing your alcohol you need to keep two things in mind: corkage fees and the types of alcohol that you want to serve. Corkage fees can be expensive so any savings made by popping over to France can be negligible against the price of the house wines from your venue. But if you have a special bottle of Champagne that has a particular significance to you both, the corkage fees can be insignificant. The kind of alcohol you serve also affects the price. Although a bottle of spirits will cost more than a bottle of wine, it will also serve more drinks, so cater to your audience when deciding what to get! You can save a lot of money by looking into the alcohol you’re serving at your wedding.
WEDDING BAR OPTIONS Depending on your guests’ preferences and your budget, there are several different ways that you can serve alcohol at your wedding. Open bar: A full open bar provides a variety of wines, beer, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverages. The wedding hosts pay for the entire bar. Limited open bar: If you’re on a tighter budget, a limited bar may be a worthwhile option. This bar provides wine and beer (and perhaps a single type of spirit), as well as non-alcoholic beverages. It is common in the UK for the couple to pay for drinks up to the end of the wedding breakfast. Cash bar: Guests pay for their own alcohol.
For budget friendly packages, choose ‘watered-down’ reception drink like Bucks Fizz or Pimms, then a Cava or Prosecco for the toast. 78
The Silverlinings Wedding Guide
Most venues and outside bar companies will offer a package for the reception drinks to include a drink (or ‘unlimited’ drinks) through the drinks reception, a bottle of wine for the meal and a glass of bubbles for a toast.
