Marriage
The recent spell of wonderfully warm and spring-like weather has sparked interest in having an outdoor ceremony. So just how do you go about it? Many licensed venues will have an outdoor structure which will be licensed for civil marriage. The couple, the two registration officers and, in some areas, the two witnesses all have to be within this structure in order for the marriage to be legally contracted. The numbers of guests at these ceremonies will be limited to the numbers that the licensed venue can accommodate within one of their licensed rooms – this is your wet weather option! You need to discuss numbers with your chosen venue early on in your planning. For more adventurous couples wanting a more bespoke ceremony with their ceremony in a stunning location which is not licensed, a celebrant led ceremony would enable them to have their wedding celebration exactly where and when they want it. A Celebrant led ceremony offers freedom of location – gardens, beaches, woodlands and moorlands – which also offers the freedom to choose the content of your ceremony. Most celebrants will work with you to put together your perfect ceremony which completely reflects your vision.

TOP TIPS WHEN PLANNING YOUR PERFECT OUTDOOR CEREMONY Be prepared! This is England, and here in Cornwall we are blessed by wonderfully verdant countryside, but that comes at a price – it rains! The weather is the one thing no one is able to control, so hope for the best and prepare for the worst! We have seen couples provide flip flops, rugs, pashminas, wellies, plastic festival macs and umbrellas. Lots of these have a dual purpose – keeping the sun off the shoulders of guests, providing shade or keeping the rain off and keeping guests warm. Have water available to ensure everyone keeps hydrated, and some sunscreen is always useful! Heat can be exhausting so think about providing some shade with a pop up gazebo. Walk through the plans for the day with your venue thinking about a dry and wet day. Hay or straw bales look great for seating – cover them with blankets or old curtains for a festival feel. Remember your older guests as bales are low so they may be more comfortable with chairs. Think about arranging seating in a semicircle rather than formal rows; we have even seen seating arranged in a spiral! Think about who will put seating out and take it back, will the chairs, if used, also be used for the wedding breakfast? Let your guests know about the access to the site and the conditions they can expect underfoot, how far they will need to walk – this will allow them to choose the best and most
suitable footwear. If the ceremony area is some way from the car park use signage to show them the way. Even the most sat nav savvy guest can be led astray, so a map with directions to the venue on the invite can be useful - especially good for Cornwall’s notoriously windy lanes! Appoint ushers with clear instructions about their duties on the day. They are invaluable for an outdoor setting for getting guests to the ceremony area on time. They can also provide assistance as guests arrive pointing them in the direction of the facilities, where to get a drink, etc. One of the fun elements having chosen an outdoor ceremony is to think about the decoration of the area. The sky’s the limit, from floral arches, to twisted willow arrangements to give a focal point for the ceremony. Think about how they will react in a breeze, or in direct sun. Make the most of the natural setting you have chosen and what will enhance it. Fire pits, fairy lights and lanterns can all look magical once the sun has gone down and the party is getting started. On a practical front, check the availability of power for a PA system for music and lighting. Some celebrants come prepared with battery operated PA systems which may be used for playing music too, but you will need to check this with them beforehand.

Your cake designer can guide, advise and make suggestions during the design process which will result in a cake that will reflect you and your day perfectly.
CAKES - THE CORNISH CAKERY Find a designer whose style fits in with you and your day. Once you have, meet with them if possible, either at a wedding fayre or a consultation. This will give you the opportunity to see if they are someone with whom you can easily communicate your design ideas to and feel comfortable in doing so. Share any pictures and ideas you may have, not just of cakes, but anything that may give a good indication for the feel of your wedding.

STYLING - HAZEL PARSONS When considering which style of decor to have for your wedding, start by working with what your venue provides in terms of furniture, decor and feel. Then you can put together a Pinterest board, where you can pin the ideas you love of anything from dresses to flowers and everything in between. You can then update this with actual photos and ideas as you go along your planning journey and even share it with suppliers who are working on your day to help you create your look.

VENUE - TRENYTHON MANOR When you have contacted a venue/met with the wedding planner – did you feel a good rapport with the wedding planner and did they make you feel confident in their ability to deliver the wedding day that you are hoping for? This is my top tip, as many of our bridal couples come to Trenython, over other venues, not just because Trenython is lovely but also because we take the time to understand our clients and to listen to how they want their day to go – rather than stating that “this is the way each wedding runs”.
PHOTOGRAPHER ELIZABETH MELVIN PHOTOGRAPHY Choose your photographer with your heart first, budget second. Do your research, ask for recommendations and visit wedding fairs. Meet your favourites - totally ignoring prices for the moment. I suspect that you’ll know instantly that you’ve found “the one”! Now is the time to ask about costs and packages. It isn’t always the case that the most costly is best. However, if you think that you can’t afford them, ask what offers they have, choose fewer hours, or save up a little more budget, to have them.
It’s a bit like shoes really. You can buy a cheap pair. They’ll do the job - but you won’t feel special in them and they won’t last long.
Or, you can slip into a pair of Jimmy Choos stylish, great fit, make you feel special, last years and have everyone admiring them every time you bring them out. I think that for your special day, you should have the equivalent of your “Jimmy Choo” photographer! HAIR & MAKEUP YOUR BEAUTIFUL DAY UK As both makeup artists and wedding planners, we’d say one of the crucial things to think about when choosing a makeup artist is how well you get on with them, and ultimately, how much you trust them. Having someone plan your wedding or do your bridal makeup is a pretty big thing, so communication, understanding and trust is key to having a successful working relationship. You need to feel comfortable telling them what you like and want, and feel confident they can, and will, deliver exactly that.
FLOWERS - TRACY Q’S WEDDING FLOWERS Although most flowers are available throughout the year, seasons still play an important role in the florist calendar. Certain flowers i.e. peonies and tulips are only available for a few short weeks at their best. Your florist will be able to advise you on seasonal blooms or an alternative flower if your first choice is not available. Flower prices can also be seasonal, so when choosing your wedding date be aware that around such times as Valentines, Christmas, Easter and Mothering Sunday, prices can come at a premium. This is when the florist expert knowledge will be invaluable.

Venue spotlight There aren’t many venues in Cornwall that can boast of having an abundance of wedding venues within one estate. But this is true of the Caerhays Estate, a Regency house built in 1810, which is tucked away in a Cornish cove at Porthluney beach. Autumn really is the perfect time of year to serve all of the delicious, crowd-pleasing dishes that your guests, young and old, will love. If you are not expecting glorious sunshine, then you won’t be disappointed if you don’t get it; but on the other hand, if you do get lucky with some hazy autumnal sunshine, it will be an unexpected bonus! A winter wedding is a true highlight of everybody’s year, primarily because it is a chance for celebration during what many find to be a lonely few months (well, except for Christmas!) When it comes to the wedding entertainment, most alfresco ideas are unfortunately out of the question, but venues do tend to be cheaper at this time of year and you can still book entertainment of all sorts to wow your guests. Winter weddings are becoming more and more popular for a number of different reasons. When you’re looking for venues, check out ones that are particularly suited to the winter season. Castles and stately homes that have big hallways dominated by an open fire place. As your guests arrive at the reception, serve mulled wine or Cornish Cider in the warm and later on you could use this area as a chill-out area for offering tea, coffee, cake and maybe a nightcap.
If your venue has a Christmas tree, all the better! A fireplace to welcome your guests in from a the cold. If you’re lucky enough to get a dusting of snow on your big day then your photographs will really make your wedding day look like a winter wonderland. For Cornwall we rarely get snow, however when we get it, we really get it! So take into consideration guests commute on a winter’s day through the country roads that do not normally get gritted. The light can be amazing for a winter wedding, think of all those candles, tea lights, open fires and lanterns, but remember to book an early wedding ceremony, otherwise you will run out of daylight. If you go for a 3pm ceremony the light will be gone by the time you get out of the church. Winter weddings also work well for smaller more intimate groups as you’ll already have a cosy atmosphere to start with.

GETTING MARRIED IN
It was at the beginning of the 20th Century that a number of artists started to call the small fishing village of St Ives home, attracted by the quality of the light which even now lends a particular vibrancy to colours.
Bernard Leach opened his famous pottery in 1920, and in 1928 Ben Nicholson first met local artist Alfred Wallis there, setting the foundations for the St Ives Society of Artists. In 1939, at the outbreak of WW2, Nicholson and sculptor Barbara Hepworth, his wife, moved permanently to St Ives and the artists’ community continued to work in and around St Ives for many years. Today, much of the art made during that time can still be appreciated in the surroundings in which it was created. The Leach Pottery is still a working pottery as well as museum and Barbara Hepworth has a museum dedicated to her work. Nicholson, Wallis, Heron, Lanyon and other St Ives artists are well represented on the walls of Tate St Ives. As well as being a favourite of artists; more recently, it has become a destination high on the wish-lists of brides. For a truly unique venue, you could book the St Ives Island Chapel for a blessing. Situated on the headland overlooking St Ives Bay, it has stood for over 500 years and is now available for celebrations, although not yet licenced for the legal marriage ceremony itself. But that is an opportunity in itself as you can have your ceremony at one of the town’s licenced venues then head up to the Chapel for a very special blessing, with the memories captured in some outstanding photographs.
If you really want to bring St Ives’ artistic heritage to your wedding, consider the nearby Porthmeor Studios for your reception or evening celebration (just a short walk from the Island Chapel). By day the home of the St Ives School of Painting, you can hire one of their studio spaces for a really special venue. Head down to Porthmeor Beach for some photographs and you’ll have the famous Tate St Ives as your backdrop.

To Valerie and Justine, the Estate is far more than just a business. Tredudwell Manor is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty between Fowey and Looe, and entirely protected on one side by National Trust land (having been donated by Justin’s grandfather to Project Neptune in the 1950s) and by their private organic farmed land on the other. For the past decade, the “custodians” Justin and Valerie have been working with their local community to entirely renovate the Manor house and build the Tredudwell Pavilion, along with their latest projects – the garden follies and landscaping. They have been keen to nurture a happy workplace by encouraging ideas and creativity through teamwork within this broad community. Tredudwell Estate is a working organic farm with HLS level farming which implies that the mission of preserving wildlife is vital. JOB: CHOOSE YOUR TEAM WHEN: AS SOON AS YOU GET ENGAGED It’s time to decide which of your friends gets elevated to best man status. Think long and hard about who you want by your side on your wedding day. Make sure your wingman knows his best man duties, especially if he has a busy life too.
Top tip: Be clear from the start what you need from your team which will save any issues further down the line; don’t be disgruntled if they feel it’s too much for them to take on. JOB: ARRANGING THE LEGAL PART WHEN: DECIDE WITH YOUR FIANCE THE TYPE OF SERVICE YOU WANT AND DO YOUR RESEARCH Whether you’re going religious or civil, the rules vary accordingly, so research the specifics for your ceremony. For a civil ceremony, you must both give notice of your plans to wed in person at the local registry office at least 15 days beforehand (but you can do it as far as a year in advance). For a Church of England ceremony, you need to have the Banns read in both the parish where you live and the one where you’re getting married. They’re read out for three Sundays during the three months before the wedding and most clergy will expect you to attend these services (as a minimum).
Top tip: Most registry offices will provisionally book your registrar before you can give notice, so during the busy months make sure your date and time has been pencilled in.
JOB: SUITED & BOOTED WHEN: 6 MONTHS BEFORE You want to look your best on your wedding day and your suit will be the most important outfit after the bride’s dress, of course! So make sure you get a well-fitted suit that complements the style and feel of the wedding as well as the colour scheme. Unlike a bride’s wedding dress, your suit can be worn again, so it’s worth considering investing in a beautiful bespoke suit which will be your ‘best suit’ for years to come. Bespoke formalwear can take upwards of eight weeks but ideally, allow four to five months for the whole process. If you’re going for off-the-peg, hiring in peak busy periods can reduce your choices so make sure you put your orders in early. JOB: SORTING THE TRANSPORT WHEN: 6 MONTHS BEFORE It can be a logistical headache! You’re in charge of booking the wedding cars for the day including arranging transport for your bride, your mothers and fathers, and the wedding party to and from all venues throughout the day. From home to the ceremony location, onward to photographs, to the reception and then home again. If you’re thinking this is a great reason to hire a Ferrari for the day, don’t forget you’ll be there earlier than most of the guests so no one will see you arriving in style!
Top tip: If you’re using the family’s classic E-type or rugged Defender, make sure you’ve got a backup! JOB: HONEYMOON SHOPPING WHEN: SIX TO EIGHT MONTHS IN ADVANCE IS OPTIMUM TO MAXIMISE AVAILABILITY, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SPECIAL OFFERS AND/OR SET UP A HONEYMOON GIFT-LIST SERVICE. Traditional wedding etiquette holds that one of the groom’s responsibilities is planning the honeymoon as a surprise for his bride. But today, most couples want to take on the honeymoon planning together. And even if your bride is involved, you can still plan fun excursions and dates she won’t know about until you get there.

JOB: RINGS WHEN: SIX MONTHS BEFORE This is something you will want to do with your fiance; she will be wearing it for the rest of her life so it should be something she loves! Once you’ve decided on the style, make sure you order the rings at least six weeks before the wedding to leave plenty of time for sizing. Most importantly, make sure to store them in a safe place and don’t forget to bring the rings on the big day!
Top tip: Just before your wedding, arrange for your fiance’s ring to be cleaned as it’ll be on show all day. JOB: WRITING YOUR SPEECH WHEN: TRY NOT TO LEAVE THIS ONE UNTIL THE NIGHT BEFORE! The groom’s speech is one part of the day guests look forward to. This is your chance to thank everyone for attending, and all the people involved in helping out with the wedding. JOB: GROOMING WHEN: 12 MONTHS IF YOU WANT TO LOSE A FEW POUNDS OR DO ANY DENTAL WORK Many guys feel awkward putting effort into their appearance, with many of those who do getting ripped into by their mates. But who cares? This is your wedding and you deserve to look and feel as great as your fiancé. You’ll be photographed hundreds of times and the wedding photos are something you’ll be proud of for the rest of your life. Good wedding day grooming is essential - as a minimum a great haircut and clean shave are a must.
Top tip: Take your groomsmen to the barbers in the morning for a hot towel shave and an ale! JOB: ENTERTAINMENT WHEN: 6 - 12 MONTHS BEFORE This one should be made a priority - it’s often difficult to get the band of your dreams on the right date. Same goes for your ceremony music and DJ if you intend to have one, or both. SO YOU’RE PULLING TOGETHER YOUR WEDDING BUDGET, BUT HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT IS A REALISTIC ALLOCATION FOR FLOWERS? 10% of the overall budget is a figure widely used as a general rule of thumb, but it ultimately depends on how much you want flowers to feature on your big day and there are a large number of variable factors that will affect the final cost. I recently had an open conversation with one of my lovely

brides about why wedding flowers cost what they do and how being honest about the budget from the outset saved both of us any misunderstanding or potential for disappointment later down the line. It’s all about managing expectations – and it’s a two-way street.
Flowers
My biggest piece of advice is don’t try to guess the price based on how much a gift bouquet costs if you buy one from a florist shop or what a hobbyist who does ‘a bit of flower arranging’ says it might cost. Why do wedding flowers cost more? From consultation right through to clearing the venue afterwards, you are asking an expert to spend time designing, planning, preparing for and creating your dream florals. It’s a full service that you are paying for that takes many hours of hard work behind the scenes, not just the cost of the flowers themselves. I’m lucky enough to absolutely LOVE my job, but, like you, I can’t work for free. Other factors to bear in mind will be the season, size and style. For example, red roses around Valentine’s Day are always going to be more costly due to popularity. Elaborate designs are more labour intensive. Adding premium, statement blooms such as garden roses, peonies, orchids or tropicals will increase the cost. A good florist will be able to recommend and select the most beautiful flowers to suit your budget and colour palette. Most of us will ask you to book a consultation either face to face or over the phone before providing a detailed quote. It’s very difficult to give an accurate cost for bespoke services without taking a full brief first. If you’re not quite at that stage, don’t be afraid to ask for pricing information and minimum spends to help you in the meantime. Many florists now have this information on their websites or available on request. They’re a great place to start, but any pricing information at this stage is generally ‘starting from’, or ballpark ranges. Remember all those variable factors I mentioned? Working with your florist. Before meeting with your shortlist of florists, do some research and gather your ideas. Create a list of your must-have items, such as bridal bouquet, buttonholes, ceremony arrangements and table centres. Anything you feel is essential for the look and feel of your day. Then have a think about your wish-list – what are those special statement pieces? A beautiful flower-filled archway? Or maybe a hanging arrangement over the top table?

By this point, you will have booked your venue and should have a rough idea of what you are comfortable spending on flowers. Tell us! It saves a lot of time and will allow us to maximise the impact of your spend right from the outset. Be aware, there’s only so much magic we can work and if you have your heart set on a big installation but the cost is prohibitive then you may need to compromise on other areas. Personally, I’d ask do you really need those aisle flowers and pedestal arrangements if you have a totally banging ceremony arch that will grab everyone’s attention? Kate and Paul knew they wanted to get married in Cornwall - it’s where they started their relationship many years before and wanted to begin their married life in Cornwall. They traveled down to Cornwall from London and viewed lots of venues in the gorgeous Cornish sunshine - then they visited Trenderway in miserable grey rain but loved it! Their requirements were for a venue which was flexible, where they would have control, and feel like the space was their own - one they could put their fun spin on it. Trenderway really stood out as the only place they could imagine tying the knot.
A friend helped them by researching Cornish photographers and sent them a few links. “As soon as we clicked through to the Enchanted Brides website, having only seen the home page I knew this was the style for us. The composition of her pictures, use of colour and texture was so impressive.” Kate and Paul spoke with Jo and they loved that she was relaxed, positive, a genuinely lovely person. They opted to have an engagement shoot before as neither of them had ever had a professional photo shoot, so it gave them a heads up for their big day.
“ Paul looked at me with a wry smile on the drive back from the farm and I knew that he’d made his choice. And that was before we even realised we had the option to get married on the outside decking! It had the perfect mix of expansive stunning landscapes and a gorgeous timeless inside space.”

Before Kate even got engaged, she knew that she didn’t want to walk down the aisle in a white dress. When Kate’s quest for her ideal dress started, she went to dozens of bridal gown shops and tried on well over a hundred dresses! There were shades of ivory, magnolia, wheat, but none of them were anywhere near what Kate had envisaged as her perfect wedding dress. Kate was then put in touch with an amazing costume designer, Anne-Sophie Cochovelou, who also makes bespoke wedding dresses. “It was such a great journey over cups of coffee, whilst I gawped in awe of the creativity of her costumes around her studio. Anne-Sophie listened to everything I wanted from the dress, used her years of experience to add suggestions and pointers for our kind of wedding on a farm, and turn it into a reality. I was gobsmacked as I saw it at each stage of the journey, but it was a surprise that it turned out far nicer than I could have ever imagined. At the start of the process when I initially met with Anne-Sophie I knew I wanted the dress to be gold and have some glamour and sparkle to it. She added her flair and went the extra marathon, rather than a mile, hand sewing sequins in varying patterns, with varying shades of gold to produce a very special piece. On the day I just wanted to look down at what I was wearing and admire all the intricate patterns and different pieces used.”

CHURCH & VENUE St Michaels Church is possibly one of the most beautiful churches in Cornwall. We loved the outlook over the beach, even though it only JUST fit all our guests in. The inside is so intimate. We barely decorated it because the views did all the talking. Just some flowers and a ton of church candles. We were Katie Cadwallader & Michael Snell. We merged our surnames, so became Mr & Mrs Cadwell.
We had our reception in Port Isaac Village Hall. This was a blank shell really, to do what we wanted with. Again, beautiful views across Port Isaac harbour and a real seaside charm, porthole windows and painted periwinkle blue with beautiful wooden floorboards.
FLOWERS Jen captured the vision perfectly – we had no idea what we liked, but knew what we didn’t so we got there through process of elimination. The biggest part of the flowers was the centerpiece in the hall. We used the existing lighting rigs to create a ceiling centrepiece, and dangled glass baubles from it (like the great hall in Harry Potter! Note the 1st September date...) It needed a VERY big ladder and a very steady hand, Jen in her dungarees the day before zipping up and down is a stand out memory. It made the hall, so it was beyond worthwhile. The church flowers were classic and understated, and the boys button holes were like Cornish wildflowers & lavender.

Adj’s photography style is super documentary, which we loved. I wanted to look through the photos and feel like we were travelling through the day again. His is a rare website that shows the case studies in chronological order. For a tall, bearded Cornish man, he was so inconspicuous on the day. But then in other moments, such an important part of the action. At 10pm I caught Adj at the bar and said “Why are you still here?!” and he said “Each time I try to leave, something brilliant happens”! The photographs are like outtakes, we couldn’t be happier.
CAKE We’re both creative so we loved placing complete trust in our suppliers. So when we saw Emily Hankins on Instagram, we thought her cake painting was perfect. We had an idea to create a big wave, using every shade of blue imaginable and a gold leaf quote at the bottom. We briefed Emily and she nailed it from the sketch alone. The flavours were insane; chocolate orange, lemon & blueberry, and carrot cake. The quote said “Oh the places we’ll go” from Dr Suess – our lives so far have been pretty eclectic, so we thought it suited our next chapter.
VENUE STYLING & COORDINATION We hired Jenny Wren to help with the venue styling which was the BEST decision we made for the wedding. We hired things from all over the place, always looking for something different. Jenny found gold cutlery in Devon, and sent it to me straight away on Instagram, so decisions like that helped style the rest of the decor. Mike and I collected gold vases from car boots for along the tables, and picked shells from the beach each wedding visit for place names. Then we did the usual things like hiring a drinks globe and ordering giant disco balls for the stage! It was a real mixture of things we collected and hires from suppliers, friends & family... but between us and Jenny, we managed to coordinate everything together. The result was beyond what we could’ve imagined. CATERING The FOOD! The food was the best bit. We’re such foodies, picking a caterer seemed a nightmare decision. We were sat in the Chapel Cafe in Port Isaac eating fish finger sandwiches when we saw Cheryl (a volunteer at the hall); she said that their chef sometimes caters weddings. We’d only eaten his fish finger sandwiches before then – they’re award winning, but we met Chris and loved him instantly. Cornish through and through, he knew the hall and it’s limitations and got super excited with us. His canapes were outstanding, and we had pan-friend sea bass, polenta mash and a crab bisque for main course. Then essentially cream tea meets trifle for pudding! Every single plate was empty, out of this world how he managed with barely any kitchen.

Having visited Pencarrow countless of times, both adoring the setting, the nature, and the house, as soon as they were engaged it was their only real option. Their photographer was Laura Buffrey Photography; initially, Harriet and Dominic filtered down their options based on styles they both liked and met a few of their favourites. Upon meeting Laura it was clear she was by far the best option for them as she totally understood what they wanted from the day, the key shots they were looking to capture, and how they wanted them to look.

It was the illusion neckline and beautiful back detailing that made Harriet fall in love with it. “I absolutely loved my dress and it was the exact opposite of what I thought I wanted”.
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR TOP TIP FOR BRIDES? “My advice would be is to get an accurate estimate of how much your alterations are going to cost before you purchase the dress (and don’t be afraid to shop around)...I had already bought mine when I found out that the alterations would cost the same amount as the gown itself, which was way outside of my budget!”

Planning
The true beauty of a tipi wedding (aside from the awe-inspiring beauty!) is the versatility that it offers in terms of location, space and styling. Giant Hat tipis can be configured in numerous ways and linked easily to midi-tipis (the smaller sister tipi; perfect for a chillout area or the band etc) and to your catering tent to allow for the interior set up you need. One Giant Hat is typically suitable for around 50-70 seated guests, but there is no limit to how many can be connected together, so the sky is your limit in terms of numbers and layout. A single Giant Hat tipi requires a 10.3m ground area and as long as the pegs can be fixed into the terrain, they can be put up virtually anywhere (and taken down with little trace); as a result, Wild Tipi’s have graced the (listed) lawns of Dartington Hall and been perched high up on the Cornish cliffs with the Atlantic waves crashing far below. We’ve hosted a four-day festival wedding in three, rolling green fields and have been tucked away for a magical woodland wedding too. The Tipi also ticks the eco-friendly box; all Wild Tipis are made from sustainably sourced, UK pine poles which are kinder to the environment and wherever possible, we endeavour to repair our canvases rather than replace them.

Of course, we have to talk about the magic of a tipi wedding; here at Wild Tipi, we aim to awaken the senses; immersing our guests in nature and creating a truly memorable day. We never tire of the first time a couple comes to view a tipi set up; there are usually gasps of joy as they gaze up in childlike wonder, high into the tipi canopy. This is typically followed by squeals of delight at the fairy lights adorning the poles, the glitter ball’s reflections dancing off the canvas, whilst the other exclaims, “blimey, how heavy are these poles?”. And as the guests first arrive at the venue, their shoes crunching on the gravel, smoke drifting up from the fire-pit through the tipi crown, a tipi makes a truly stunning first impression, forming an immediate talking point and creates lasting memories too.
A tipi wedding also opens up endless possibilities in how you shape your day; from the interior décor and styling, to the possibility of a late night party (venue dependant!), or perhaps turning it into a week-long festival.
Planning So what about the practicalities of a tipi? The set up of a tipi can take longer than a traditional marquee and as each pole weighs a massive 50 kilos, we typically need a team of 6 working for two days to get a three tipi configuration complete. You will also need to factor in the cost of hiring the venue too; in Cornwall, a farmer may charge anywhere between £500 to £2000 for the use of their field, but this can vary depending on location.

Most tipis come with lighting and flooring, but you might want to opt for sumptuous extras like hardwood flooring or solid wood doors. You will also need to think about access, water, toilets, power and heating, but you shouldn’t be left in the dark about this; a good supplier will be able to support and guide you as to your requirements and ensure you stick within your budget too.
Yes, if you dream of a relaxed and informal day, have a dream location in mind, or perhaps desire a high-end wedding but you still love to feel the grass between your toes and you don’t mind chucking wellies on if the heavens open. If you like to dream a little wild and want a venue that is definitely not ‘off-the peg,’ then a tipi might just be the perfect place to start.

As with any wedding, it’s a good idea to have a Plan B in mind should the weather turn. A tipi is actually a remarkably weather-proof structure; cool in the summer and snug in the winter. The sides of the tipi can be lifted or taken down depending on the sun, views, rain and wind and can withstand storms up to certain wind load. We always advise that you take out wedding insurance; the most important thing is to keep you and your guests safe and sound, to always ensure you have a back-up plan and the one thing no marquee or tipi supplier can control is the weather!

ANDREW & PUM 29TH SEPTEMBER 2018 (OR 2561 IN THE THAI CALENDAR) We chose Pendennis Castle for a number of reasons. Pum wanted to wear a traditional western style dress; she had seen films and documentaries with grand weddings in cathedrals or castles, and wanted something along those lines. In addition, the ceremony where the prospective groom asks the bride’s mother for permission to marry her daughter is at least as important to Thais as the actual wedding, and all the elders from the village turn out to bless the couple and, literally, tie the knot. As this had been held in Pum’s home village we were both happy to have the wedding in the UK to balance out. We both agreed that it would be lovely to have the wedding in Cornwall, as I originate from there. At the time that we started searching I was in Cornwall being looked after by my parents as I had unfortunately broken
my shoulder and wrist in a cycling accident. A Google search for Cornish wedding venues had Pendennis top of the results. I took various photos and sent them to Pum via WhatsApp, and she enthusiastically endorsed my suggestion immediately! Pum came over a few weeks later, and drove us down to Cornwall as there was a wedding fair on at Pendennis. The wedding fair sealed the deal, and we had the chance to talk to the various suppliers as well as see the venue decorated as if for a wedding. Because we were based some distance away we opted to purchase a package from English Heritage, as it made everything so much easier than having to chase several different suppliers. We also opted for having the fire lit in the keep entrance room, and having the main gun Long Tom fired after the ceremony.

The ceremony started promptly at 4:29pm rather than 4:30 as 9 is a lucky number in Thailand, whereas 0 is unlucky. All important ceremonies, blessings etc tend to start at a time with more 9s than 0s in the number, and normally ending in a 9 as well. The foundation blessing ceremony for our house for example started at 9:09am. Glynn (caterer) turned out to be a bit of a godsend - he was able to put together a menu with Thai style starters, and a traditional English roast main course. He was also easily able to cater for allergy sufferers and vegetarians with no fuss and without drawing attention to them (my son is allergic to both eggs and nuts and hates eating out as he ends up eating plain sandwiches or similar so sticks out). All fresh, cooked on site and delicious! We chose Khalile Siddiqui as the photographer because we both really liked his cheerful demeanour - he really put us at ease as soon as we started chatting - as well as the lovely photos on his stand, where the couples seemed to have such natural, happy expressions rather than the forced poses you sometimes see. An added bonus was that his wife Tamsyn is a make-up artist as well as a 2nd photographer, so they made the perfect team. All the guests commented on how Khalile made them smile and feel at ease, plus they stayed late to get pictures of the reception and to change Pum’s make-up when she changed into an evening outfit. The cake was made for by Sophie Faldo, recent winner of the Great British Bake off final. She is a friend and member of a cycling team that I sponsor, and Pum also knew her as she had been to Mallorca for 2 weeks on a cycling trip with the team. Sophie has been incredibly busy since her rise to fame; it all ended up a bit last minute but she and the cake arrived during the ceremony! Choosing the bride’s car was very easy - we own a blue Ferrari California T. Pum’s brother in law drove her to the castle - he was absolutely
made up at getting to drive a Ferrari including some practice miles the day before! In the lead up to the big day, having Trenton Spear, the Hospitality and Events Coordinator, at the end of the phone proved invaluable. As Pum was forced to spend much of her time before May in Thailand it fell to me to ‘organise’ the wedding, and I became increasingly pleased that we had chosen the wedding package rather than individual, unknown suppliers. The seating plan was based on a map of Thailand - 8 tables all named after places we had visited, and the map position corresponded roughly to the position of the tables. Naturally the bridal party was on the table called Chaiyaphum! Pum’s niece Ketsara designed and printed something for each table showcasing some of the attractions of each area, such as the Red Lotus Sea for Ubon Thani, and the stone formations Mo Hin Khao for Chaiyaphum. What would I do differently? Not much to be honest. The only advice I would give would be perhaps to Google advice on planning a wedding, or obviously reading your guide, but mostly to just ensure that the person you are marrying is someone you genuinely love and adore. That way the day cannot possibly be anything but perfect. It sounds clichéd but, for me, the most memorable moment was seeing how stunning and radiant Pum looked as she walked down the aisle. My brother, standing beside me as Best Man, remembers me saying ‘Oh my God’ out loud when I caught sight of her.

Where did you start your career in hairdressing? I started in my late teens in Nottingham and did my first wedding within a year of starting to train in hairdressing, and quickly realised that styling was my passion. I have to ask...any celebrity clients? Yes, I’ve had some lovely celebrity clients! My favourite is the amazing Surrane Jones; I cut and styled her hair for years in Manchester and London and really saw her career evolve. I also did Mel C’s hair (Sporty Spice)...and when you grew up in the 90s it’s a huge thing! I even got the pleasure of doing Kate Moss’s daughter’s hair and even Liam Gallagher! Don’t believe the hype, some of the biggest celebrities are often the nicest to work with. I also traveled with my job, styled hair for fashion shows and shoots all over including a show for fashion TV at Cannes Film Festival. What is the inspiration behind the ‘salon’? I really wanted a relaxed environment that people could really feel at home in but also feel pampered. I love interior design so it was such a pleasure to be able to create my own working environment! The salon has the feel of a Georgian country house full of warmth and beautiful things.

FOR PREPARING FOR THEIR WEDDING DAY HAIR My biggest tip is to aim to be the best version of you; don’t look too much at what others do. You have your own style even if you don’t realise it and my job is to make you feel like you at your best! For example, if you never wear your hair up then it’s probably safe to say you shouldn’t in your wedding day or if you’ve been desperate to cut your hair short then why not have short hair for your wedding? You need to be true to yourself and your own personal style.
What do you love most about wedding hair styling? I really love being able to play such a huge part in the day of so many amazing people! Choosing the right stylist and makeup artist is really important because you basically spend the whole morning of your wedding with them and you have often only just met! So personality is as important as skill when it comes to getting the right stylist. Are there any trends for wedding hair? The thing that makes me happiest right now is people are doing their own thing much more and aren’t so led by trends. There was a point where you would be doing the same hair on practically every bride. But times have changed with celebrity culture now where they all change their hair every few weeks; it has opened people up to so many different looks! silverlinings.co.uk
