Welcome

in this issue... REGULARS

It’s so close you can almost smell it... the Spring, that is! With Christmas seemingly ages ago, we’re now looking forward to 2019 weddings, and the new trends they will bring to 2020 weddings. Some of our personal favourite trends which we hope will go crazy are bold colours, floral wedding dresses, illustrated invites, zero waste weddings and grazing tables. We absolutely love the Pantone Colour of the Year 2019 - Living Coral. While this bright hue isn’t a typical wedding color, it will make it all the more cool and original when you embrace it as your wedding colour! We have a fantastic diary of wedding fairs for you, starting on the 6th January at the Northants County Cricket Club, and finishing with a big summer wedding fair at Hangar One in Sywell at the end of April. New venues include Kirtlington Park near Oxford and Donington Hall in Castle Donington.

You are no longer a ‘partner’, you are now a ‘wife’ or a ‘husband’... in unity.

ONCE YOU’RE MARRIED

SMALL PRINT: This is not financial advice, we are simply highlighting the possible financial advantages you could receive as a married couple. For financial adviser, contact an IFA in your area.

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

Legal

ENSURE YOU’RE PROTECTING YOUR FUTURE ONCE YOU’RE MARRIED WITH THESE FINANCIAL ADVANTAGES. MARRIAGE ALLOWANCE For the 2018 to 2019 tax year, it could cut your tax bill by between £336 and £869.50 a year. A spouse earning less than £11,500 a year can transfer £1,150 of their personal tax-free allowance to their other half. The higher earning spouse must only be earning between £11,001 and £45,000 (£43,000 in Scotland) a year – so this wouldn’t apply to higher rate taxpayers.

an increased allowance equal to the value of their late spouse’s ISA value which they could ‘top up’ with the value passed to them on death. As an example, at the time of death, if your spouse had saved £20,000 in their ISA, in addition to your individual limit of £20,000 for the 2017/18 tax year, you’d also get a separate one-off £20,000 ISA allowance for that tax year – even if they leave the actual money to someone else.

CAPITAL GAINS TAX Ordinarily, an individual selling an asset for a profit can realise up to £11,300 in gains in a tax year before a tax charge is due. Before the sale however, assets can be transferred freely between spouses/ civil partners – with no liability to tax – to utilise the extent of their combined capital gains tax allowance (two x £11,300) or indeed they can be transferred in full to the spouse/civil partner who is expected to incur the lowest capital gains tax charge. Either way, by splitting the assets first, such as in the disposal of a buy-to-let property, this can be a really useful tax mitigation technique potentially minimising tax due on dividends, interest and rental income.

PENSIONS - STATE AND PERSONAL If your spouse or civil partner dies, you may be able to get extra payments from their pension or national insurance contributions, as long as you’ve not already built up the full basic state pension entitlement yourself, as well as inherit some of their additional state pension. Many workplace, personal and private pension schemes will only pass on benefits to a surviving partner if the couple had been married. If your partner uses drawdown to access their pension, a pension fund can pass tax-free to anyone before retirement but, once income is being drawn from it, it will be subject to a tax charge of 55% on death unless it passes to a surviving spouse or civil partner.

INHERITANCE TAX The tax benefits of marriage aren’t solely confined to a couple’s lifetime. One of the greatest benefits is married couples and civil partners can inherit their partner’s estate without paying inheritance tax. Unmarried couples on death may be subject to a 40% inheritance tax charge on assets above £325,000, but a deceased spouse or civil partner can pass an estate of any worth to the surviving spouse without any immediate tax consequences. The widower can also inherit their spouse’s unused nil rate band (the value of a person’s estate not subject to IHT). As a bonus, since April 2017 the main residence nil-rate band (RNRB) allows a family home to be passed on to direct descendants free of IHT – currently it gives an additional allowance of £100,000 per person, effectively taking the threshold at which IHT becomes payable to £850,000 for family beneficiaries. ISAs AFTER DEATH While ISAs can’t be transferred between spouses during their lifetime, they can be transferred on death to the surviving spouse while retaining their tax-free status. The survivor can receive

OTHER ADVANTAGES Lower risk insurance: Anyone who can tick the married box can also reap savings on their insurance. Confused.com found that the average cost of motor insurance for a female driver insured with their spouse was £406, compared to £841 if they were insured as a singleton. Children: Unmarried fathers don’t automatically have parental responsibility of children a couple have had together. Lower risk insurance: Anyone who can tick the married box can also reap savings on their insurance. Confused.com found that the average cost of motor insurance for a female driver insured with their spouse was £406, compared to £841 if they were insured as a singleton. Debts: If you’re married, you will not be responsible for any financial obligations or debts that your partner had before you were married. Next of kin: Your spouse will always have authority to act as next of kin. silverlinings.co.uk

TOP TIP

DAY TIMINGS

...work backward s! If you’ve found your venue, ask wh at time the party has to finish and the n decide what time you want to inv ite your evening guests from. From this, you will then know the latest tim e at which you ca n have your wedding breakfast.

Timings for your wedding day are one of the hardest things to gauge for any couple not used to organising large events. I always recommend working out the day plan early on in the planning process (at least have an overview) as it helps the whole day fall into place.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS: Week day weddings, including Friday: remember your guests have to finish work and get ready, so a later evening start is better Suppliers’ other weddings: your suppliers may have more than one wedding that day; for instance, you may find your makeup artist is going on or coming from another wedding, so this may impact your bridal prep Time of year: summer weddings can have a lengthy drinks reception, allowing your guests to savour the sunshine, but winter weddings are better with a shorter drinks reception particularly in smaller venues.

24

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

Planning

Use this simple template as a starting point; it’s based on a civil ceremony at the same venue as your reception. 9.00am - Bridal prep

How long this will take depends on the number of bridesmaids and mums having their hair and makeup done professionally, along with the complexity of your hair and makeup. Give yourself 30 mins to get into your dress once you’re all done.

12.00pm - Groom to be at the ceremony venue

The groom and his ushers should be on hand to welcome your guests as they arrive. The bride should plan on not being late!

1.00pm - Ceremony

A civil ceremony can be up to 30 mins. If you are having a church ceremony, this will take approximately 1 hour and remember to factor in travel times between the church and your venue.

1.30pm - Drinks reception

With a ceremony around lunchtime, many guests won’t have had time for lunch, so make sure there are plenty of canapes.

2.00pm - ‘Officia l ’ photographs

Even if you have opted for more reportage style, you will still want some formal photos of family and friends for the mantlepiece! Ask ushers or family to help organise people to keep it as smooth as possible.

3.00pm - Called to be seated for your Wedding Breakfast

If you have around 100 guests this can take up to 30 mins. A receiving line will lengthen this, even double it if you have a traditional lineup.

3.30pm - Wedding Breakfast served

This usually this takes between 1 hours to 2 hours, depend ing on the menu. More informal styles, like a buffet or BBQ can take longer.

5.30pm - End of the Wedding Breakfast, time for speec hes!

Try to keep your speeches to 30 minutes - after that, your guests get fidgety! Venues in the summer can be stifling warm, so consider having speeches outside before the meal.

6.00pm - End of the formal part of the day

If the room needs to be cleared of tables and chairs for the evening, then you’ ll be ask to move to another part of the venue while this happens.

7.00pm - Evening guests arrive

Many couples leave the cake cutting to this part of the day; it includes the evening guests in one of the traditions of a wedding day. Following this with the first dance always works well.

12.00a m - Carriages

Most venues will close the bar and stop the music an hour before this time.

COLOUR TRENDING IN 2019: PINK

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? I started my career as a Financial Planning Manager for HSBC, before I started my own business. When I met my fiancé, who owns a specialist law firm, I was working for Deloitte at Barclays and helped him develop his business for a few years. Then an opportunity within bridal came up… THAT’S QUITE A CHANGE, WHY THE WEDDING INDUSTRY? Having recently purchased my dress and the experience not feeling as special as I expected I felt I could offer something different. We had an opportunity to get into the industry, so I grasped it! YOU’VE JUST MOVED INTO YOUR NEW SHOP… We have a cosy boutique in Long Buckby which has been likened to boutiques in London, so I suppose it’s a London boutique experience in the heart of Northamptonshire. We offer a vast range of wedding dresses from traditional ivory wedding dresses through to black wedding dresses! Plus everything in between. We have a main boutique room, a fitting room, and a beauty room where we have a resident professional make-up artist, Milly Reilly. 36

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

allow 6 mondrethsss to order a WHAT BRANDS DO YOU STOCK? DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE? Watters, Kenneth Winston, Ella Rosa Collection, Rachel Allan, Nicole Milano, Nicola Anne and Lou Lou. My favourite is probably Nicola Anne as she is a UK designer with all dresses made in the UK and they can do lots of changes to make the perfect dress for our brides. We are also in talks with Ian Stuart which we are very excited about – so watch this space. We also have Bridal Buyer’s Student Designer of the Year winner 2018 Holly-Ann Tullet designing her maiden range just for us.

WHAT SHOULD A BRIDE THINK ABOUT WHEN CHOOSING THEIR WEDDING DRESS? The theme and location is important, especially for destination weddings – the dress needs to make you feel special and help you tell the story of your wedding. We have a range of lightweight dresses for those getting married in hotter climates, and accessories such as boleros for those who might be getting married in the colder months here.

Spotlight

WHAT CAN A BRIDE EXPECT WHEN SHE VISITS YOUR SHOP? To be wowed by stunning dresses, and although we have a selection of traditional dresses, we have a wide selection of dresses that are different from your traditional ivory gown! We want our brides to find a dress as individual as they are. ARE THERE ANY TIMESCALES THEY SHOULD BE AWARE OF? We say to allow 6 months to order a dress to ensure everything is ready in time, although shorter timescales can be achieved (but the designers charge a little extra to prioritise your dress). If time is short, we have a range of dresses that can be purchased “off the peg”.

Body shape is important but not the be all and end all. We have had brides that have been to competitors’ boutiques and were put off by consultants almost forcing them into particular dress types due to their body shape. At the end of the day it’s about what the bride loves and feels most comfortable in. WHAT ABOUT THE BRIDESMAIDS? We stock a good range of bridesmaids dresses. We stock Colours by Kenneth Winston; I love this range as you can choose a colour and pick from lots of different styles, so their bridesmaids can have different styles to suit their shape but in the same colour if they wish. silverlinings.co.uk

37

Spotlight WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL BE TRENDING IN 2019? I think heavy embellishments, jumpsuits and more satin will come in later in the year, whilst we are seeing more 70’s inspired fabrics and sleeves, and very deep cut cleavages. I also think colour will make an appearance, especially pinks and golds, with their make-up perhaps moving a little more glamorous to match. AS WELL AS THE SHOP, WHERE ELSE CAN WE SEE ANNA WOOD BRIDAL? We are currently attending wedding fairs nearly every weekend! We are also hosting open days where brides can peruse at the leisure. We will also be in Vogues White Wedding Special Edition in their December, January and February magazines. WHAT HAVE YOU MOST ENJOYED ABOUT COMING INTO A NEW INDUSTRY? Being different! It’s nice having a slightly different outlook due to my background. I’ve also enjoyed how friendly everyone seems to be and its great how complimentary suppliers are happy to collaborate. For us it’s all about collaboration. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR OWN FORTHCOMING WEDDING? Our wedding will be quite different. Although I’m not usually drawn to gothic, we are having a gothic theme. My dress is a Nicola Anne dress and is a fusion between two dresses I loved. We get married on 13th March 2019 at Warwick House. This is the anniversary of the day we got engaged and our very first date which was Friday 13th, so for me the 13th is a very lucky date, hence why we opened on Saturday 13th October. FUTURE PLANS FOR ANNA WOOD BRIDAL? Going forward I would like to split the range between two boutiques. One offering dresses £3000 and under, the other being a more exclusive and bespoke. We are launching our own range in January 2019 at our launch party on the 31st January at Wood Farm, Everton. My dream is to have boutiques all over the country, and definitely one in London.

Ed itor’s note - we can’t wa it to feature Ann a and Aaron’s own wedding in the next magazine as a Rea l Wedding feature! 38

& CAREY 24TH JUNE 2017

Paul made me a video for the wedding morning, telling me why he was so happy to marry me, with a compilation of our favourite songs and photos.

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

Real weddings RECEPTION VENUE: BARTON HALL We fell in love with Barton Hall as soon as we visited; the Orangery and grounds are stunning for a summer wedding and we loved the fact it is a beautiful Grade II listed building, with modern interior.

TOP TIP Book a video grapher! Our weddin g video sum s up our whole d ay so perfect ly and takes you b ack to the d ay just watching, a perfect mem ory.

COLOUR PALETTE I totally love the glamour of rose gold accessories so I managed to pick up mix and match accessories over the year which, when all put together, looked gorgeous.

PHOTOGRAPHER: SUMMER LILY Paul’s sister used Terri for her wedding and we loved the beautiful romantic & soft feel of the photos. We had an engagement shoot with Terri; she made us feel really comfortable and after receiving the photos from that shoot, we knew we wanted her to photograph our special day. DRESS: SERENDIPITY BRIDES Initially I thought I wanted a fishtail style dress, but the ladies at Serendipity were so helpful and suggested I tried a few different styles. I fell in love with my ‘princess style’ Maggie Sottero dress which I never imagined I would choose! I also got 10% off as it was our first visit. JEWELLERY: STEFFANS JEWELLERS My uncle Steff helped me choose the most perfect jewellery for the day and as gifts. PERCUSSIONIST: MR STIXX Recommended by Matt Potter, he is a fun, eccentric character who played percussion to some chilled house music at our reception; a really fun way to add entertainment which the guests loved! silverlinings.co.uk

Real weddings BRIDESMAID DRESSES: COAST After trying various dresses from shops in Northamptonshire, my bridesmaids and I couldn’t quite find the perfect style and blush colour we were looking for. Through Coast Online we ordered the multiway blush dress; it was the perfect colour and they were beautifully made. We were able to customise them and choose exactly which style suited the girls.

FLOWERS: JACK HADDON FLORIST Janine was amazing! After an in-depth initial consultation, looking at their portfolios and brainstorming ideas, we had designed our bouquets, buttonholes, church pews, mother of the bride and groom gifts, centrepieces. Janine was so patient with me emailing her if I changed my mind or wanted advice on a certain type of flower. I couldn’t have wished for more beautiful flowers or a better service. I chose eucalyptus for a dusky, earthy foliage with peonies and quicksand roses which Janine suggested as they matched perfectly with our blush theme. TIES & POCKET SQUARES: SWAGGER & SWOON They’re an online company which Paul found after struggling to match the ties and pocket squares. They were so helpful with a personal service, sending swatches of colours, plus we managed to match the bridesmaid dresses, ties and pocket squares perfectly.

STYLING: NERISSA EVE We cannot recommend Nadine enough, a lovely lady with vision and imagination for all wedding styles. We visited Nadine at her barn in Market Harborough which is an aladdin’s cave full of stunning accessories for all styles to hire! Nadine was so helpful with great ideas of how to put the finishing touches to the décor. We hired candelabras for our centrepieces which were decorated beautifully by Jack Haddon. A giant gold bevelled table plan which she hand calligraphed the guest names and table names of all the places Paul and I have made memories. She is an artist and added beautiful blush peonies too! Nadine also provided personalised wedding signs, stunning glass sweetie jars for our cake table and festoon lighting for the garden in the evening which gave a magical feel to the grounds of Barton Hall.

Real weddings CAKE: VICTORIA’S CAKE COMPANY I came across Victoria online and loved her simple, modern and feminine cake designs. I visited her house with my Mum and tasted some of her delicious cakes! We drew up an idea of the cake we would like - a 3 tiered buttercream cake with blush and rose gold details with a ruffle bottom layer, rose gold middle layer and white simple top tier which complimented with a quicksand rose and eucalyptus corsage. We decided we would like a cake / sweetie table, so Victoria designed some beautiful matching cupcakes and macaron lollies with our initials on.

TRANSPORT: BRIDAL CARRIAGES OF NORTHAMPTONSHIRE John was such a kind and helpful man who invited us to see his stunning cars at his home in Thrapston; they really are his pride and joy and he has a passion for what he does. He gave us plenty of time on our own to sit in the cars and look through his portfolio of wedding photos. We chose the Rolls Royce Silver Cloud to start with and then later added a car for bridesmaids which we are so glad we did! The cars were just incredible, the drivers were smart, patient and clearly also have a passion for their work. They were happy to stay as long as we needed to ensure we had all the photos required.

MAKEUP: SOPHIE DUFFY MAKEUP Sophie is a talented makeup artist who makes you feel so comfortable. She takes on board what you ask for; I personally like a full coverage of makeup which Sophie achieved without that ‘caked on’ feeling. She is a perfectionist and has a real calming presence taking her time to work her magic! You just have to see her Facebook page for the before and after photos to see how talented she is! EVENT LIGHTING: POTTER GROUP Matt, a family friend and an expert in his field, could totally see our vision and provided stunning blush uplighting for the evening which looked gorgeous, complimented by LOVE letters which are also perfect for guests to pose for photos with! Groom

NORTHAMPTON’S

Shoe

The ideal time for a groom to invest in a pair of shoes to last a lifetime Some of the best shoes in the world are still being made in England, and they come with history, too. Many are made in their original factories to this day, including a high proportion in Northamptonshire. The county was a footwear-makers’ hub, thanks to the area’s plentiful supply of the oak bark and water needed in the leather tanning process, as well as more than its fair share of cattle markets.

A number of the shoes on this list are made using traditional methods, including the Goodyear welting technique – when a strip of leather (or “welt”) is sewn around the bottom edge of the shoe, attached to the upper and insole, and then sewn to the outer sole – rather than using glue. This results in long-lasting, weather resistant pairs, with replaceable soles so the shoes have the potential to last years. The pairs on the list are all lovingly crafted by established brands, using the highest-quality materials.

Our editor Emma chats with Tim Eaton from Suitors Menswear WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? My background is actually completely different from what I am doing now. I have done various roles in a number of sectors including car sales for a period of time but mainly in the home improvement and construction industry. TELL US ABOUT HOW AND WHY YOU GOT INTO THE WEDDING INDUSTRY? Most of the companies I have worked for previously have been family run and owned and that had a big bearing on what I wanted to do. I was looking for a change and wanted to work for myself having been inspired by those people I’d worked for. We were on holiday in Majorca and were sat by the pool (as you do!) and the advert for the sale of the business popped up on my phone. I called from the poolside had a chat with the agent, arranged a meet when we we returned and the rest they say is history. For me, the draw to the wedding industry is that it’s a happy and celebratory industry and we’re lucky enough to

50

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

have the opportunity to meet lovely people on a daily basis and be part of their special day. SUITORS HAS BEEN AROUND FOR A LONG TIME, HASN’T IT…. Suitors was started by Neil and Toby 26 years ago. They started from scratch in a small shop in Buckingham and it grew from there to the business that it is today. They moved to the current location in Buckingham in the late 90’s and Northampton opened approx. 7 years ago. We bought the business in November 2016. WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER? DO YOU OFFER BESPOKE? We offer a full hire service for the Groom and his Groomsmen. We can kit out the guys with everything that they need. We are able to offer a bespoke service through our carefully chosen manufacturers; this enables the Groom to have a momento much as the Bride is likely to keep her dress and with enough time we can tailor his suit to his requirements.

Spotlight

I think the traditional look morning tailcoat, double breasted waistcoat and contrast trouser will be strong in 2019 WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST POPULAR STYLES, CUT, FABRIC? Blue is still our most popular colour and still is as a lounge suit, although we have seen more grey and traditional style jackets being booked. We do a lovely Steel Blue suit we call Airforce Blue; I think that’s really going to grow in popularity. WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL BE TRENDING IN 2019? I think the traditional look morning tailcoat, double breasted waistcoat and contrast trouser will be strong in 2019, with the 2 royal Weddings and the coverage of what various gentlemen were wearing at said events means we’ve seen an upturn in that sort of style. We’re also previewing a new Grey Check suit with a subtle check that I think will be popular.

WHAT CAN A GROOM EXPECT WHEN HE VISITS YOUR SHOPS? The widest variety of styles, colours and fabrics available to hire in the area. We are proud to be able to offer this wide range and strive to ensure what you see when you come to Suitors is not just generic. WHAT SHOULD GROOMS THINK ABOUT WHEN CHOOSING THEIR SUIT? The general rule of thumb is that what we supply any groom is in keeping with the wedding overall, whether that be a rustic style or something sharp and contemporary or even the main colour of the flowers or dresses we can make it work it by mixing and matching the styles and colours that we offer. ARE THERE ANY TIMESCALES THEY SHOULD BE AWARE OF? As we own and maintain all of our stock we can be fairly flexible with a Groom’s requirement but generally we would say between 6-9 months in advance is a good time to get sorted allowing for fittings and refits etc.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM WEDDING SUIT? Personally I’m a big fan of making a statement, I am lucky enough to be able to sample various styles and ideas. I have a very nice Burgundy Textured Suit and I am really loving the Prince of Wales Check look too, so perhaps a combo of those two! FUTURE PLANS FOR SUITORS? I think we can expand further into the bespoke side of things for the Grooms and Groomsmen who want to have that “one off” look and we’ll continue to keep investing in the looks that can set you apart for your Wedding. TOP TIPS FROM A MENSWEAR PROFESSIONAL? I think the best tip or advice I could give any Groom would be to be happy and comfortable in what you’re wearing. That may sound a tad obvious and a little silly but be proud of how you look and what you have chosen, this is your Wedding day and if it is something you want then don’t take second best. 27TH MAY 2018

RECEPTION VENUE: THE STANWICK HOTEL Stanwick Hotel has all the elements we were looking for in a venue including the ability to provide an outdoor wedding under the beautiful pavilion. The grounds are highly maintained and create a fabulous setting and backdrop to the photos. The venue is self contained with spacious multiple reception areas including 2 bars giving great flexibility when planning a wedding. The main house is fantastic with ample bedrooms for the wedding party and guests and the main hotel has over 20 well decorated and designed bedrooms. We decided on afternoon tea for our wedding breakfast however the hotel can offer a varied menu of hot multiple course meals and can cater for special dietary requirements. The service was fantastic and nothing was too much trouble on our day. 56

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

PHOTOGRAPHY: WHITE ON BLUE PHOTOGRAPHY Having seen Ailsa’s work many times before and having been photographed by her, we were confident she would capture and deliver wonderful photos. Her experience in the industry and her understanding of photographing brides meant that she would capture the most perfect moments of the day. We trusted her completely and we highly recommend her. DRESS: ICON BRIDAL Amy and Tracey are very passionate about delivering the dream dress. Very easy and relaxed atmosphere. Nothing too much trouble. Great selection of dresses and accessories and the dress was in stock. Made it very easy to buy on the first visit. The alterations were done by “Dress Alterations 4 U” who were recommended by Icon Bridal.

TOP TIP Most of our supp liers were found at th e wedding events so alway s worth paying them a vi sit.

HAIR & MAKE UP: DONNA FROM BEAUTY ANGELS After meeting Donna at a wedding event in 2017 and explaining what Sharon wanted to achieve with her hair and makeup, Donna understood immediately and could easily visualise the style and theme required. Donna gave great advice on what was achievable with the length and style of hair and helped create the final vintage hair and makeup finish which was complemented with hair accessories supplied by designer “ Miss Clemmie”.

SUITS: VOW BRIDAL Great selection of suits and options. Easy collection service. No pressure from the Vow team. They listened to what I was looking for and found it for me. FLOWERS: BY ARRANGEMENT FLORIST Helena is an incredibly talented florist who can visualise your wedding, theme and the whole picture. We wanted a vintage theme wedding with vintage style displays and tea sets. Helena was able to deliver it all. We explained the ideas we had and Helena developed and built on them delivering more than we could have imagined.

CAKE: HOCKLEYS CAKES After visiting a wedding event in 2017 and seeing a number of displays on the Hockleys stand, we found exactly what we were already looking for in the flesh. With a small change of flower designs on the cake, it was perfect. Great experience buying from this very well establish cake company. You will not be disappointed, they really were the icing on the cake! EDITOR NOTE: Michael and Graham retired in November 2018 and we wish them all the very best.

ENTERTAINMENT: JAMIE DOCHERTY MAGICIAN Wow! Extremely talented magician and entertainer, Jamie is fantastic and your guests will be absolutely amazed! TRANSPORT: BENTLEY FOR BRIDES The vehicle was supplied by John and we were delighted by the service. Although we did not travel to the venue, we wanted to have photos with a car and John was more than happy to supply the vehicle for what we wanted. John has a lovely selection of vehicles from modern to vintage so there is a vehicle for all. 58

TOP TIP Try not to le t the pressure of the day ge t in the way of enjoying it – it’s over so quickly!

THE MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT:

Walking out onto Rockingham’s terrace lawn as a newly married couple with Leicester Ceilidh duo playing, our friends and family around us, and red kites flying over the valley.

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

Real weddings VENUE We knew we wanted to get married in the church in Rachel’s home town, St Edward’s Catholic Church, Kettering, and we were keen to hold the reception at a historical venue because we both have an interest in history (we are both lecturers in English literature from earlier historical periods). Rockingham Castle was the first (and only!) place we considered; as soon as we saw Walker’s House we knew it was right for us. The staff also laid on complimentary tours of the castle for our guests, many of whom share our love of history. We couldn’t fault the staff at Rockingham who were a great support in the lead-up to the big day. The highlight of everyone’s day, however, was being able to dance on the lawn outside Walker’s House while the sun was setting – it was a perfect end to a perfect day. PHOTOGRAPHY We booked Chris after spending a lot of time looking at online portfolios for local wedding photographers. We were attracted by Chris’s photos of real weddings – he’d caught all the couples he’d photographed really well and it was clear that he’d put his subjects at their ease. Chris arranged for us to meet for a pre-shoot at our venue, where we practised some flattering poses and made a plan for the wedding day photos so that we could spend as much time with our guests. On the day itself, Chris did a great job of organising our guests into group photos and was really flexible about timings. He also suggested that we do our first dance outside - it was one of the most memorable parts of our day, as was having our beautiful portrait taken in front of the castle as the sun went down. DRESS I’d heard about Courtyard Bridal through recommendation and in magazines. I had researched dresses online before visiting and had my eye on one by Lillian West, but Bethan and Rhiannon suggested I try a few other dresses to make sure I wouldn’t regret my decision – I didn’t want a ‘princess’ dress because I’m not very tall, but they encouraged me to try one to make sure. The first time I visited I was really worried about having to undress in front of strangers, but after my first visit Bethan and Rhiannon weren’t strangers any more and became more like friends, excited to hear about plans for the wedding and help in any way they could. Real weddings BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES Our bridesmaids lived far away from each other, and family and job commitments meant that it would be difficult for us all to be in the same place at once. The M&S dresses we picked were fantastic value for money, great quality, and could be worn strapless, with a halter neck, or with capped sleeves. SUITS As with our bridesmaids, our two best men and close family lived far afield so we chose a menswear company with local branches. Moss Bros’ blue Ted Baker lounge suits suited the relaxed country wedding theme, and Michael at the Leicester branch spent a lot of time talking to us about options for ties and recommending that the groom wear something to make him ‘stand out’ – a good tip as blue suits are very popular! FLOWERS Julia was fantastic to work with, bringing a portfolio of her work to our house and letting us pick colours/styles we liked. In the end we went with vintage country wedding flowers roses, peonies, and woodland flowers for my bouquet and gypsophila balls for the bridesmaids. STATIONERY I made all our invitations from scratch because I couldn’t see any to buy that I liked and thought we could save some money. I bought folded card and envelopes and printed the different parts on handmade paper I bought from a local stationery shop. I also made the table-plan myself – I bought seven books from a charity shop, attached them to a board, and pegged up table names and a lists of guests on the open pages.

SPECIAL MENTION Our wedding favours were bags of sugar mice (for the adults) and white chocolate mice for the children, all beautifully hand-tied by staff working at ‘The Shop’ in Kettering, a sweet shop which gives work opportunities for teenagers with special needs.

TRANSPORT As our wedding party was quite big, and needed to travel 20 minutes to the reception, we booked cars that held at least five people. VP had the perfect vehicles – Austin Princesses – which suited the country wedding theme and fitted everyone in. The drivers were lovely and gave us a glass of champagne as we left the church!

BRIDAL HAIR/MAKE UP We met Clare when she used to visit the house to do my late grandmother’s hair and she became a good friend. She did three hair trials in the months before the wedding experimenting with different ways of curling my ultra-thick hair – as a result my curls stayed in the whole day! ENTERTAINMENT We booked a two-piece traditional music group to play for our drinks reception on the terrace lawn of Rockingham Castle looking out over the valley – it was magical! In the evening, DJ Paul played our favourite music and moved some of his equipment outside so that we could dance our first dance on the lawn – this certainly distracted everyone from our terrible dancing.

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

Flowers

Once you’re flowers have been pressed, air-dried , or freeze-dried, the questio n is then what to do with your wedd ing flowers: Create a framed pie ce of art to hang on the wall

Add them through the pages of your wedding guest book or photo album Add fragrance and use as pot pourri Put into clear balls an d use for Christmas tree deco rations

You spent what felt like forever choosing a wedding florist and picking the flowers for your wedding day, so it seems a shame to only enjoy them for one day. There are ways to preserve your flowers yourself or use an expert for a truly lasting work of art. PRESSING FLOWERS This is likely the most popular way as it is also the easiest. This is a fun way of preserving your bouquet which you can easily do yourself with a few heavy books! DRYING OUT Another simple way to preserve your wedding bouquet is to let it air dry. Gather up the stems and tie them tightly together, and hang the whole bouquet upside down in air dry. Check back on them in a couple of weeks and you’ll find your bouquet has dried completely. FREEZE DRIED Freeze drying your bouquet will keep it whole and like the day it was dried! A machine freezes your flowers as the complete bouquet and then dries them, maintaining the shape the bouquet was originally without having to reassemble it.

Silica gel preserves flowers true to their original form, and is another simple way to keep them perfectly intact. PAINTED IN WATERCOLOURS While having your wedding bouquet painted is not preserving the actual flowers, it’s still a lovely way to preserve the bouquet. Commission a local artist to paint your bouquet and it can live on in your home forever. RESIN SHAPES Having your flowers made into a globe, paper weight or a piece of jewellery is becoming very popular with brides. Your flowers are immortalised perfectly forever, and can be easily displayed. You need to send your flowers off as soon as possible after your wedding, so they can be preserved in the freshest conditions, but it can be done up to 10 days after the event.

SILICA GEL Yes, as in the little packs which fall out of new handbags! This is another one you can do yourself as silica gel can be purchased from craft shops or online, and works by drawing moisture from the flowers.

VENUE We chose Dodford Manor for our wedding venue, and to be honest it was an easy choice! It was the first venue we went to have a look at and we knew when we pulled into the entrance, overlooking the rolling countryside, that it would be the venue for us! The Barns continued to overwhelm with the stunning oak beams, vaulted ceilings and a gorgeous external courtyard, perfect for a summer wedding! Once we had decided on Dodford Manor for our big day they invited us to an open day where we had a four course, sit down meal in the beautiful barn. MAKEUP My makeup was done by Lucy McDonald Makeup who is by far the best makeup artist I have ever dealt with and will continue to use her for any occasion! 74

VENUE DECOR At the open day/tasting, we had the opportunity to meet a selection of hand picked suppliers where we came across Beaulicious. Beaulicious made our venue even more stunning and decorated exactly how we had hoped. They provided fairy lights, table decorations, chair swagging, candles, lanterns and flowers for our centerpieces. PHOTOGRAPHY Ben captured our day perfectly! We met Ben at a Silverlinings wedding fair and we got on straight away. He listened to exactly what we wanted and we have so many photos that we will cherish for a lifetime! Ben worked solidly all day capturing every smile, every tear and every moment. He blended in so well with our wedding party and got some amazing natural shots.

Catering

True cost of food & drink FOOD AND DRINK ARE A MAJOR PART OF THE WEDDING EXPERIENCE (NO ONE WANTS HANGRY GUESTS!), SO IT’S NO SURPRISE THAT YOU’LL SPEND A BIG AMOUNT OF YOUR TOTAL BUDGET ON YOUR WEDDING CATERING. According to Bridebook, the average wedding food and drink cost is £5,862. The report also shows 33% spent more on food and drink than budgeted for, which suggests there is a lack of understanding on how much this costs. If your wedding catering isn’t booked as part of your wedding venue, you should

80

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

find your caterer immediately after you book your venue. Wedding fairs are a great place to meet caterers as you can usually try small bites. Most caterers will offer a private or group tasting session which is usually chargeable but deducted if you book; so only use the tasting to make your final decision!

Catering

The cost of catering Your wedding catering may be provided by your wedding venue, or you may need to hire an outside caterer. Reading a wedding catering contract can be a bit confusing, but in general, your wedding catering cost will be priced on a “per person” basis. A standard wedding catering package includes the following: Food: You’re paying for the actual food that your guests will eat which actually makes up a surprisingly small amount of the per head cost. Remember that locally sourced produce and seasonal food will cost less than food that would have to be sourced from elsewhere. Staffing: From your event manager to chefs, waiters to bartenders, there are lot of staff that will go into making your wedding day a success. Work with your caterer to make sure that you have enough people on hand to ensure a smooth reception.

Questions for your caterer How much flexibility do we have in terms of our menu options?

What service styles do you offer? Can you handle allergies and dietary restrictions? Do you have an alcohol license? How do menu tastings work? Can you provide other supplier meals?

Equipment: Outside caterers will normally need to use hired in dishes, glassware, table linen, utensils, and more. A marquee wedding will have to have a mobile kitchen set up in the catering tent.

HOW CAN YOU SAVE MONEY ON WEDDING FOOD AND DRINKS?

Additional fees: Be sure to read your contract carefully to make sure you understand your wedding catering cost. Check for ‘plus VAT’ as many caterers will quote ‘ex VAT’ missing that could add an unexpected 20% to your bill.

- Skip a starter and serve canapes instead. Often more appreciated as guests are hungry, the cost should be less than serving 3 courses.

STYLES OF WEDDING BREAKFAST FOOD When determining your wedding food cost, how you’re planning on serving the meal can reflect on the price per head: Plated: Otherwise known as a sit-down meal, your guests will be served their meal at their table by the waiting staff. There may be a single option or several options, which your guests can either order in advance (usually on their RSVP card) or on the day. Buffet or BBQ: For a more casual serving style, guests serve themselves from a buffet station or a BBQ. Platters: Servers provide large platters of food to reception tables, and guests serve themselves. A fun alternative is to invite a guest from each table to act as ‘chef’ to carve a big joint of meat for each guest! Bowl food: A more modern service style, food is served as small bowls of food, eaten with a fork alongside canapes or small ‘bites’. This allows guests to walk around, and mix and mingle during the reception instead of sitting at their tables. THE BUDGET OPTION Most of the time, a wedding breakfast buffet or BBQ is indeed less expensive than a plated dinner. While you’ll pay less in staffing and hire equipment for a buffet-style meal, you’ll need more food since guests are serving themselves. To keep your buffet budget-friendly, avoid serving costly foods buffet-style or have staff on hand to serve, helping to keep the portions under control.

-U se your cake for pudding. Most wedding cakes are wasted after they are cut in the evening, so cut it before guests are seated for the wedding breakfast and serve it with berries and cream. -F or a more informal wedding, have speeches before everyone is seated which saves on serving a fresh glass of bubbles. -S erving the wedding breakfast later in the day reduces the need for evening catering. - Have a Cheese Cake instead of a traditional cake and use it in the evening as a snack served with port. -H ave an accurate number of guests when you talk to caterers as the per head cost can alter, up or down, depending on the number of guests you have. -C ommunication is key - tell your guests when and what they are eating so they can be prepared to ensure they have eaten sufficiently before they arrive. silverlinings.co.uk

Catering

The cost of alcohol When choosing your alcohol you need to keep two things in mind: corkage fees and the types of alcohol that you want to serve. Corkage fees can be expensive so any savings made by popping over to France can be negligible against the price of the house wines from your venue. But if you have a special bottle of Champagne that has a particular significance to you both, the corkage fees can be insignificant. The kind of alcohol you serve also affects the price. Although a bottle of spirits will cost more than a bottle of wine, it will also serve more drinks, so cater to your audience when deciding what to get! You can save a lot of money by looking into the alcohol you’re serving at your wedding.

WEDDING BAR OPTIONS Depending on your guests’ preferences and your budget, there are several different ways that you can serve alcohol at your wedding. Open bar: A full open bar provides a variety of wines, beer, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverages. The wedding hosts pay for the entire bar. Limited open bar: If you’re on a tighter budget, a limited bar may be a worthwhile option. This bar provides wine and beer (and perhaps a single type of spirit), as well as non-alcoholic beverages. It is common in the UK for the couple to pay for drinks up to the end of the wedding breakfast. Cash bar: Guests pay for their own alcohol.

For budget friendly packages, choose ‘watered-down’ reception drink like Bucks Fizz or Pimms, then a Cava or Prosecco for the toast. 82

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

Most venues and outside bar companies will offer a package for the reception drinks to include a drink (or ‘unlimited’ drinks) through the drinks reception, a bottle of wine for the meal and a glass of bubbles for a toast.

Planning

WITH A

with Ali from Cariad Personal Ceremonies The focus on weddings and ceremonies have been of prominent interest recently with talks of the government intervening with changes in the Registration Law, taking away current restrictions for the licensing of more “open spaces”, giving couples more choices and flexibility on where ceremonies are able to legally take place. All good news and a step in the right direction for choice. But are you aware that by using the services of a celebrant, there has always been more choices of where you hold your ceremony, no restriction on timings, no restriction on content?

Let us all work ck together to put ba the the importance of ceremony into your wedding day.

88

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

Let me share the refreshing comparison journey with you, with what a celebrant can offer First, a meeting is arranged with both of you, to give you the opportunity to talk about your love story and journey so far and finding out all about YOU. It even doesn’t matter that you haven’t chosen your venue yet. We can help with discussions around where you would like to hold your ceremony and sharing with you all the options - this is YOUR CHOICE. Perhaps you fell in love with a venue but disliked the room that was licensed? So let’s revisit - are there other areas in that venue - conservatory / gardens / stairwells - that are open for you to consider?

Planning

Over the time of your planning - whether it’s just 3 months or 2 years - your celebrant will be there for you, keeping in touch and adding wording to your own personalised ceremony. They’ll take on board your own dreams while bringing lots of fresh ideas to the table. You have chosen carefully all your loved ones to witness and celebrate with you, so involve them in the ceremony, giving them great memories too. Each ceremony is unique, so your guests will not have experienced anything like it before. Make sure there is an ample supply of tissues because your ceremony will create many tears - tears of joy, love and happiness!

Because there are no time limits to your ceremony, there are a great number of additions that can create that “extra special touch”... there really are no limitations!!

Music is the food of LOVE and you would be encouraged to make your choices of music – as many as you would like to have throughout the ceremony. Let’s set the scene...maybe getting all your guests warmed up in a sing song, then choosing a separate song for your bridesmaids’ entrance, and having your own entrance to your own special piece and exiting dancing back down the aisle!

- Sharing a cocktail mixed especially for you

- Unity in Glass - Sand ceremony - A wishing tree - “Tying the knot” in the form of handfasting - The quirkiness of “Jumping the broom” - Having your favorite animal deliver your rings -A religious blessing of the rings, a hymn and prayers - A toast of bubbly with your guests As the time gets closer to your chosen date the level of stress and anxiety, excitement and nerves naturally start to kick in. Having a celebrant working alongside you means a huge level of that stress is taken away with someone to answer your questions and queries along the way.

OF NORTHAMPTON TOP TIPS WHEN CHOOSI A WEDDING CANG R? Go and see the car! Check if they have we dding car hire insurance (diffe rent from standard insurance ) Make sure they have contingency plan sho a uld the car break down

We talk to John about his love of cars... How and when did you get into wedding cars? I have always had a passion for classic cars, including building and modifying them. In 2003, whilst operating JTS Limousines (American limousines), I heard a local car business was winding up. From them, I bought the 1935 Rolls Royce Landaulette, a 1955 Rolls Royce Silver Wraith, and a Daimler limousine. I soon started taking bookings for weddings alongside the American limos. A couple of years later whilst doing a wedding in my 1937 Austin Goodwood Hot Rod (the groom wanted something ‘different’!), the main wedding car was the very same 1963 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud my wife and I used when we were married in 1995! I convinced the owner to part with it, so now I was operating 2 American stretch limousines and 5 wedding cars. In 2007, I was asked by a couple for two Daimler limousines; I only had one so I asked Colin Daniels, then of Bridal Carriages of Northampton, if he would kindly supply the second. 92

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

We got talking and I purchased a 1974 Rolls Royce Corniche Convertible, the 1950 Jaguar MK5, another Daimler DS420 limousine and a Jaguar XJ6 over a period of 10 months, so the wedding bookings could be completed by him. I basically purchased the business, so became Bridal Carriages of Northamptonshire operating 11 wedding cars. So here we are 15 years later with a showroom and a bigger fleet, successfully providing a premier bespoke wedding day transport service - in my eyes second to none in this area. Tell us more about your amazing showroom? I hear you filled your pool in! Our house had a inside swimming pool but as we barely used it Amanda suggested we cover the pool with a mezzanine floor and convert it in such a way that it could be changed back if we ever moved. Doing a lot of work myself along with friends and family, we could finally move the fleet of cars in. I also have a workshop so most of the maintenance can be done onsite.

Spotlight AUSTIN GOODWOOD HOT ROD

I bet some of your cars have a history behind them...

I’m an avid hot rod nut and have owned this since 2001. After 17 years and many hours in the garage (including adding a supercharger to the 5700cc engine) has resulted in what you see today!

1937

ROLLS ROYCE SILVER WRAITH Built for Major Horace Dodge of Windsor in 1955 who owned the car for 4 years and then owned by the Right Honorable Earl of Woolton, part of Churchill’s cabinet.

1955

1935 ROLLS ROYCE LANDAULETTE Originally built for the world’s second richest man, the Maharaja of Baroda, once the ruler of one of India’s most powerful princely states. It has been paraded in front of the Queen as part of her Golden Wedding Anniversary at Windsor Castle in 2002. It has been around the world: India, South Africa, America, and now Thrapston.

1950 JAGUAR MK5 A rare Jaguar indeed as they were only produced between 1949 - 1951; this one was totally restored in 1986.

What do you love most about working in the wedding industry? It is quite a unique industry as the businesses are mainly all cottage industries who provide, like myself, a very personal service. Driving on the wedding is lovely; everybody is enjoying themselves and there is such a happy atmosphere.

All of my chauffeurs are friendly and helpful. I do get a sense of pride knowing I’m chauffeuring couples on the happiest day of their lives.

1968 JAGUAR 420 One of the last built, I purchased it as an abandoned project and it sat in a garage for 6 years before I restored it in 2008.

Honeymoons

— or —

DAYCATIONS WHICH HONEYMOON SUITS YOU?

Whilst this sounds great in theory, planning a honeymoon these days can be overwhelming. With the help of Rob Gower from Dragonfly Traveller, we look at the latest honeymoon trends… Once upon a time, part of planning a wedding was booking a two-week package holiday to somewhere in Europe or the Canary Islands for a honeymoon straight after the big day. Nowadays we are used to people showing personality and creativity when it comes to wedding planning with wedding cakes made of cheese, flash mob-style first dances and inventive table favours and pop-up photo booths. Now, it would seem that has extended to honeymoons. Rob says: “We have seen a growing trend for building bespoke honeymoons for couples. Twoweek package holidays have been replaced with month-long multi-centre holidays where you can travel to more than one destination, staying for a few days or weeks at a time. Mini-moons that last a couple of days, and daycations have also emerged as an alternative for busy newly married couples, typically young professionals who can’t take too long off work and opt to take a longer holiday at a later date.” 96

The Silverlinings Wedding Guide

These latest trends have been led by celebrities including BBC Radio One DJ Greg James who took a Friday off from his radio show to get married and then took his new wife for a daycation at the zoo before heading back into work again on Monday morning. And earlier this year, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle opted for a mini-moon after their wedding, going to a castle in Ireland for a one-night stay so they could still honour their royal commitments. Other modern honeymoon alternatives include memorable experiences, such as touring holidays on bicycles or motorbikes, visiting vineyards or climbing mountains. “Seeing such a shift in honeymoon types is a good thing in my opinion. In my day job, I work as a travel PA, helping my clients to create trips of all kinds from business trips to weddings abroad and, of course, honeymoons. To be able to get to know a couple, their circumstances and work commitments and their dreams and aspirations, likes and dislikes means we can create a honeymoon that’s perfect for them and is not just a case of ticking off a job on the wedding planning list.”

Honeymoons

“ Planning a wedding can be stressful. Having something to really look forward to and get excited about can help get you through.”

HERE ARE ROB’S TOP ALTERNATIVES TO A TRADITIONAL HONEYMOON: 1. H otels with spas are the perfect place for a mini-moon of one or two nights. You can start with a day of using the facilities such as swimming pool, sauna and steam room followed by getting dressed up for a romantic dinner in the restaurant before staying overnight. To make things more romantic, you can always ask for a bottle of champagne and chocolates to be waiting for you in the room as an after-dinner treat. You can also sign up to a hotel loyalty scheme and receive upgrades and complementary stays. These can then be used for anniversaries further down the line. 2. F or daycations, there are some great days out to be had in the UK. Places like London, the Scottish Highlands, York, Cotswold and Bath are filled with plenty of culture, history and great eateries. If you look around, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what is on your doorstep. 3. W hy not try a multi-centre holiday which enables you to visit complementary or contrasting destinations to create your own unique experience in the space of one trip, for example a luxurious beach holiday in the Maldives with a shopping stop-off in dazzling Dubai. Or a stay in busy Bangkok followed by the paradise of a beach resort in Thailand. 4. I f you’re planning the trip of a lifetime, the US has endless possibilities. You could spend a few nights in lively Las Vegas and then chill out in Los Angeles or Mexico. Or drive down the legendary Route 66 in a classic car, starting in Chicago and ending in Los Angeles passing through Springfield, St. Louis, Branson, Oklahoma, Amarillo, Albuquerque, Flagstaff, Grand Canyon National Park and Las Vegas. 5. H eritage return has also become a very popular wedding trend in recent years. This type of wedding is when a couple returns to the land of ancestry for one or both the partners.
