Haiti in Chaos

海地大地震 救災重建前途艱辛 On January 12, 2010, an earthquake measuring 7.0 hit Haiti, destroying an already poor country. Millions of people were left without homes, food, or water, and hundreds of thousands were killed. Aid groups around the world responded, sending people, supplies, and more than US$200 million. Taiwan offered help in the form of 2,000 kg of medical supplies and equipment,2 fourteen rescue3 specialists,4 and two skilled sniffer5 dogs. However, the roads were blocked, telephone systems were down, and Haiti had only one working runway.6 This made it very difficult to bring help to the people who needed it. Even as the rebuilding begins, Haiti will continue to need aid to recover from this terrible disaster.7

The Winter of Record Colds 寒冬創紀錄 全球冰河期? The entire northern hemisphere was affected by record lows and snows. Heavy snowfalls blanketed the UK, disrupting1 transportation2 systems and electrical power. The Eurostar high-speed rail3 service, which runs between London and Paris, was shut down for several days in December and January. Even sunny Florida had freezing temperatures. The cause of the cold was an effect called arctic oscillation. Pressures over Greenland pushed the cold Arctic air much further south than usual. While some scientists say that this harsh winter was just a weather phenomenon,4 others warn that this may be the beginning of a mini ice age.
